"He's drawing your business through purpose. A good thing. Well let's talk. Simon cynic from minute. Now i agree totally with the thrust of his content his ability to take the complex and bring it down to something incredibly simple and compelling is nothing short of genius you know that because when you hear it even though it may be new to you it is obviously true. Maybe two obviously. But we'll get to that later. I love his original concept. Start with why. It probably spawned hundreds of thousands of businesses to think about purpose where they never had previously. It's one of the simplest and probably the most powerful statements. You could possibly make if you don't know why you doing something. The what the hell and the wind become way more difficult. Now give some examples of this on the way through. And i must admit upfront. I haven't yet the infinite game of the cliff notes on that one. But i will the one thing that i deeply believe to be true. Is it your people will be much more likely to give you. They based if they see where they feed in. How does what. I'm doing today. Contribute in a broader sense the organization's goals just turning up to pay chicken hating. What you do is sold destroying. Most people want to know that they make a difference purposes the vehicle for letting people aspire to something bigger it paints a vision that can inspire and motivate them. Now you're be familiar with the story of john. F. kennedy during the washington headquarters of nasa in nineteen sixty one as the story goes kennedy stopped. Talk to a genita- who was mocking the floors and when he asked that genita- what he was doing nessa he replied mr president. I'm hoping to put a man on the moon now true or not. The story demonstrates the concept of purpose absolutely beautifully. I'm not saying that these people don't exist but i've never met anyone who gets excited by mopping floors but just knowing that you're part of a much bigger more important. Picture conserves a driving force your motivation and commitment in a nutshell. That's perks now. The second point for me is that these days purpose is a differentiator. The you'll stakeholders to make better choices. Sustainability has become critically important in business as we can. Now see the end of the runway for some of youths natural resources as customers. We actually take notice of companies purpose and the more noble. It is the more comfortable you feel buying the products. And we'll have some more on this later but it's not just our customers who are paying attention. Some very powerful investors are now choosing to only allocate capital to companies do business in an ethical and sustainable way just returned great dividends to shareholders. Doesn't cut it anymore. What if you manufacturing operations take advantage of child. Labor in southeast asia or your business reeks heavy on the environment of the amazon rainforest. You're not going to get capital. The third thing is that if you it's genuine and you're serious about it. It can god the micro decisions that come up everyday in the general run of play. Now let me give you a very personal example at your c. mental. We are genuinely driven by a purpose. Which i'm sure you're familiar with you. Get to hear it every week to improve the quality of leaders globally well with listeners in over seventy countries. We're making pretty good fist of it so far. But we also understand that we're running a business not indulging in a hobby so purpose is underpinned by couple of really important principles. the first is that income follows impact. It's only through being able to have an impact and make a difference to people that we deserve to make money. If we have no impact business goes no it and rightly so the second is that we believe strongly in the power of competitive markets if we find a market need. That's unmet we'll be rewarded. And if we don't we weren't so we ended one of the most crowded markets on the planet leadership development and progress since no i'm sure the authors of blue ocean strategy burst out laughing if they'd heard about ad business plan before we launched it but every day when illinois make decisions about the business purpose is a thing that god's those decisions

"Hey everybody kevin fennell hosted the between the slides podcast not a full episode today more of a thursday thought focused on change management so i recently completed the pro side p. r. zero s c i change management practitioner course and learned about the ad car eighty k. a. r. model which will jump into here a little bit and really i found instant benefit in a way for me to objectively look at myself projects and of course because we're talking about incident management how that could translate to an incident management team as as they deploy building off some of the conversation that robin i hadn't episode thirty seven so we'll pick back up here in the future in the near future with that episode talking about the the lega p but really how can incident management teams be effective change managers which is really what you're doing going into a situation and helping change it for the better hopefully is what's tapping so we'll we'll go through the ad car model and so ad cars awareness desire knowledge ability and reinforcement and what i'll do i'll breakdown down what is the technical definition under the model and then what are some other thoughts i have as far as projects and being a manager and how how can that apply to incident management teams that are going somewhere to help that are working up that leg of the pe- we talked about the initial response that get information and how does that map to add car and like we do here in discussions have done in articles only then pro good process maps a lot and across and amongst project management management body of knowledge six sigma add car the planning p. you know it it's good processes with kind of different titles in documents and so much into it let's look at a awareness sort of the pro side model awareness is not what how in the technical and tactical this is this is people changes ancient strategic it's why do we need to change right what's the cause of the change what isn't in place process wise were or device or in the system or something like that but that everybody has an understanding of our y you know and and we've heard that from simon cynic i've mentioned and if you haven't go look him up but understanding and everybody buying into and believing in the wire having the awareness of it from your executive levels down to the boots on the ground weather it's literally boots on the ground doing search and rescue nurses vs on hospital floors IT folks underneath desks fixing computers is everybody aware why we're gonna make this change in whatever we're doing whether it's a process or a new device your new software or you know were going on in the field and and what are we gonna change right so again this isn't task level stuff that's project work not necessarily change management work which was a great differentiator for me as a project manager so having some sprinkles of change management in the way i project manage but really being in order to tease out the tactical project management stuff and the people and organizational change and the environment that this ad car that this process change management management really looks at so so putting that in terms for incident management teams do folks that are headed out the door on that short team robin i talked about or though the full team does everybody know why we are needed for whatever incident we are responding to you could say events as well everybody have that picture or do they just have what they're doing winging little piece of the planning p in their individual unit or section or whatever they need to have the big picture in the understand what is the overall mission what's you know a lot the times that's translated that awareness is given to us from the incident command or from the team leader as commander's intent or leaders intent so that is an awareness that translates to if we're gonna do change management as an organization or throughout a project how does all our team members whether it's an incident management team or project team do they all understand why we need to change not just what and how in the tactics of it so the next thing and the ad car model is d for desire so in change management it's it's the desire to support short-changed right is everybody on board does everybody get it again from the highest level to the lowest level that yes we need this it we're gonna all support it throughout we're all going to be involved because everybody can buy an early and then if people drop off then you'll see issues which as we go through the ad carr explained that a little bit more but we need everybody to to want to be part of the change engine to continue to be part of that change in the manager team you know how are we going to change the current situation to make it better right so someone asked for our help we've have gone somewhere there's an event they need help with but in responding how are we going to do that and is everybody on board with what's going to happen too so folks that thrown into management teams typically desire to do incident management work isn't an issue maybe in this case it's d- does everybody have the desire to do whatever is needed at whatever position position and we touched on that robin i enough to spoken to her before if you're credentialed says a plan chief you should be ready and happy and willing to work anything within that section action that's all the units that's a check and recorder that's whatever whatever is needed just because you are signed off on the highest book what that really means is that you're qualified to do everything everything at that level and below and show you should have the desire when you go out the door and when you're out to do whatever right so if if there's three plans chiefs and they just need someone to stand up a table table and circuit and people to sign in that your job and that's how you're going to help and so we'll get into how we can you know help with some of that stuff here in the next step so the third step up in the ad car model is k. for knowledge so for our folks and change management how are we going to do the change right did we empower folks with the knowledge to be able to make these these changes that we're asking them to do a process or a new product or you know and it's not just training it's the big picture it's you know they have a picture of everything we're asking them to do that desire to do it and then the knowledge of how to do it and so certainly training is a component of it but also in how um what's the knowledge of how this will make their lives better how will it make their shifts better how will it make the team more efficient and so that whole kind of picture and definitely we need to be communicating throughout all of these steps apps and that's a a big point in this as well and for instance as teams how are we gonna do we have the knowledge to know how we're going to integrate to make change happen when when we show up i think that's that's hugely important and then to that as well what what should we change what should we suggest that we change because again we're not the the owners of what's going on there were guests and what do we not change what if we show up something's going accountabilities rock in the house really good well don't change it disaster if they need more people and so you know going back to that desire peace so again if your plan chief you should certainly have the knowledge to work every position below you not just how run the process and maybe do some forms so that's an area that you can shore up than certainly make sure your knowledge is from being a status check and record or filled observer up through the units up to the section chief that you have the knowledge to be able to jump in and do any of those jobs and so really back to regular kind of project change management do all of our people on the team have the knowledge doing to help them obtain more knowledge to help us create and plan effective change management and then as we keep going down the road continuous and ongoing so the four step an abc car is ability do our folks have the skills sales and abilities to make the change so some of this is from the training you know do they already have the knowledge and we're going to help communicate that around we're going to get them to knowledge are we gonna do we need to do training are they in a position where they are good facilitators right so it's not all just formal classroom training it's an a big part of ad car ineffective change management the chew biggest players that help that both in communication and helped drive and keep change our sponsors so high level executives so leadership hit by in like the commanders like your hollow officers if you hear messages from them you typically listen a bit more and manager so managers meaning the folks that right your performance reviews that you hear from every day that you want to hear updates from every day so that's our target for letting us know in so just like some folks are great practitioners shinners in the field at doing really tactical things there's a challenge sometimes when incident management teams to step out of that and be strategic so does someone one have the ability to step out of their tactical role and be strategic and help implement the change that the team is there to do meaning do we have the right players or should we pair them with someone on that spend doing it a little bit more in the incident management field and help build up that person that's just coming out of the boots on the ground role and and stepping that up and so as changed managers whether you're a leader on its management team were changed manager on on a former projects looking at kenya team make these changes do we have the knowledge how do we provide it how do we do training what are other ways we can get that leadership training facilitation presentation training communication training all these different things and no trainings pretty hard but again it's also looking at your people and the ultimate end result of that is if you have someone who is great at leading folks doing things in their unit or in their incident management section or whatever part of the business but they're not a great facilitator or communicator of the change in the trainings not work then looking at how we can get someone someone in there that that may be can help facilitate that a little bit better than that's a tough call and that's for either a project team or incident management team right there's some folks that that are good in certain situations and they get in other other ones and they struggle even with some exposure some trainings and propping up and that's when sometimes we have to have the hard decision step in as leaders and say you know what thank you so much for for trying for being part of this would we're going to have to get somebody else to help fill this role and you're welcome to shadow or stay on or you know kind kind of go back to what you were doing it will certainly be in touch and you know there's different ways crucial conversations all that kind of stuff but sometimes that has to happen and if you get to which we'll talk talking the next step of kind of disciplinary south than that's a whole 'nother level as well sore on the fifth step of ad car we've already talked about awareness earnest desire knowledge and ability and so that fifth step is reinforcement right we can do all the things we've done before but then the changes just dropped and it's not reinforced in different ways than we will have done some good work but maybe wasted some time or miss them opportunities that we could have

Let's jump right into summit day. Number two. We're gonna lead off with Chris HOGAN who spoke on the power of a rising tide taking your leadership to the next level. Here is a portion of Chris keynote from the summit stage. Listening versus learning. What I wanted courage to do as leaders as let's put into practice and stuff. We're learning here this week. Don't be innocent. Bystander don't you dare be a pedestrian or an observer, you've got some real things at stake? And you got some real opportunities. Dave told you that to be a great leader. It's a decision and a lot of you decided when you came here, and that's a daily decision. That's not a sometime decision. That's not today decision. I need you to get ready to make that decision every day. Henry cloud talk to you about your desired future. The power of the chair that you sit in as well as some team members battling schone talked to you about being present as a leader. And my goodness carry well at grow was amazing gave us an opportunity to really stare into the face of what fear and death looks like some of y'all. Got some nice neat lives. Where the most stressful decision. You made was get a salad or rap, right? What dressing do I get? Okay. This woman stealing with some real stuff. It was an eye opener for me. Can we talk about art? Amongst all these other like minded people people that are walking through some stuff and trying to make some stuff happen. Please. Don't be in here. Casual I get a chance to talk to you about the power of the rising tide, and I wanna talk to you about this and walk you through some things you need to be focused on if you're going to rise because I feel like we all can take our businesses to the next level. We all can take our lives to the next level. But we have to make some decisions. But I I need to talk about this. It's kind of interesting I got a chance to talk about water. Because I'm not exactly what you would. Call a great swimmer. Okay. Aquatics needed. You hear a sort of sort of had you on speed now stop here. And we got talk about this. So I went and I was hanging out with some special ops. Guys had an opportunity this past summer to go do some military things and it was a blast. And they took me outside to a hovercraft these things really exist, and we were in the parking lot just like hovering around, and I felt very safe because there was land these four special guys look at me and say, hey, HOGAN, you wanna go out to sea. Yeah. Like they were all four staring at me. I didn't have a choice summit. I did. Right. And they were like let's go out to sea. And the one guy was like, well, we don't have clearance and the four special said, hey, we're going to give him a heck of an experience. Let's go. And so we head out to sea as soon as we start moving toward the ocean. I started to have some awareness of a couple of things number one..

And if you just go on YouTube and type sign Senate, this is the presentation that comes up. I I don't know what it's called. But it doesn't matter you'll find it if you just type his name when you too, and he's got this great presentation that speaks to the prioritization of philosophy over these other things, and he talks about marketing, you know. And he says most people say, you know, we have this product. It's really great. You know, why don't you buy it? And Simon says, none unindo that's not how really great products and companies operate any uses the the example of apple and how they. Before you know, the product they always seem to wanna tell you. Why why they're doing what they do? And again, once you know, why which is kind of a philosophical question. It tells you more about the people tells you more about who you're dealing with. And of course, with apple, you know, they they had this this legendary guy in Steve Jobs in founded the company and and gave birth to the philosophy of insanely great products and insanely great customer experience at cetera. Okay. So then after you know, about the people in the philosophy them what he did. Well, then you want to know about the strategy. So if you've learned enough about me and my philosophy of investing. Then you say, well, what is this newsletter? Dan rights, you know, it's extreme value. It's value investing museo value investing hasn't done. So well of less years. Yeah. But danced on okay. Right. So that strategy and performance, you're you're kind of you're you're actually d- prioritizing strategy and performance compared to people into law Sophy and do this. When you look at every public company that you might choose to invest in or any situation where you're putting capital to work with somebody else in charge. I'm gonna leave it there. Okay. Shorter than normal rant. I'm gonna leave it there. Prioritize people then philosophy than strategy, then performance, and I think you'll make a lot better investing decisions. "We found ourselves with with an unexpected move out to Oregon where we are now and it put our family into sort of I won't say emergency mode. But it changed things everything was in turmoil. And at the same time, our oldest daughter was getting where she wanted to have a cell phone, and we started making these decisions providing these things for kids and with all the chaos going on we quickly found ourselves not being comfortable with how it was working out. And so we started looking for information on what's the right way to handle this scenario outta we keep our family together. Not let our kids go too far out into the unknown with all of these screens and found that there is not really a handy way or not a great consensus on what the right approaches yet. Yeah. Led to this. Did you start off before you went on that? To trying to find the data were you being a bit arbitrary is a lot of parents are where there here's a rule. There's rule of exactly and it's. Essay we quickly realized that we needed to have a plan. We all agree on as a family. So they know what our rules are boundaries are. And then we can work with that. Well, and that's where I think when I talk about the generic things I noticed that it is I talk about that arbitrary yell. Take your phone. We'll take your phone you've been on it too much. You haven't you know, I feel like I can comfortably say that. That's not productive in can do a teenager, for example. You know, they eventually they know that even the errant says you'll get back when you're better or whatever that means that they can't trust that. So some pointed this removes all hope because they know that it's gonna get taken away or not whatever that looks like. So I feel like I can lead people to the point where okay, let's fear those rules. But then I don't really know what to do from there. So. Yeah. So we we came up with a plan just to. Basically presented it to the kids inside K. This is our family technology plan. This is what we're gonna do. These are the roles, of course, we last night of experience. And so there were alive things we left out and also was as kind of being the I guess control freak cer-. Whatever you, however, you wanna put it just kinda telling the kids this is how it's going to be. And we just realized as time passed that that wasn't the right approach. "Getting that folks if you haven't seen Simon cynic interviewed here on the show, a cynic S, I N E K the guy wrote the book start with why he type in Simon cynic millennials. He has a video that's been seen at bazillion. Times on the but really on screens on smartphones on the dopamine hit. But if I look at that, I've got kids of all ages, and you look at the culture, and what's happening with them now to sit there and be damned with this little thing. That's given us in his words, a little dopamine hit. It's hard for me, not to feel like we are hearing more and more towards a narcissistic bent, and I so I don't discount that words. Let's take it out of the mental illness aspect of it. And just say narcissistic, self serving activities to me seem to be on a rise as a culture thing. I completely agree agree. And if you don't like the word, narcissistic, it's just selfish. It is just thinking of yourself before somebody else, and we all do it to some degree in different scenarios some more than others. But. I agree that are maybe because of the screens maybe because his social media, but I see more and more to in a in a younger generation. But I also think seed in my generation of people that are just like, no, I'm taking time for me. And I'm I'm thinking about me, and there's a fine line between doing what's best for you, which is just boundaries. And you do need to have those and then doing with best for you. And not having any regard for anyone else. And so what we're talking about this having no regard for anyone else to keep those healthy bounds. I love what you said. Because I feel like we tend to focus on the extremes a person who does nothing, but pour out to others in wears himself down and the other person who sometimes that person recovering who goes the other way and starts alive of only serving themselves, and that balance is going to be different for everyone. Thank you for pointing that out. I think that's that's wise for sure I'm gonna read one more here, Natalie Vilson. Number one. She's at cynicism gotten older, I realize it's about myself. I have a hard time trusting people overall. So I questioned a lot of things and also struggle without the number one area, this impacts places impact passes, my walk with the Lord. I've also recognized my cynicism and skepticism perhaps deeper rooted issue of how I see myself. It's easier to point the finger than look in the mirror. He has a video that's been seen at bazillion. Times on the but really on screens on smartphones on the dopamine hit. But if I look at that, I've got kids of all ages, and you look at the culture, and what's happening with them now to sit there and be damned with this little thing. That's given us in his words, a little dopamine hit. It's hard for me, not to feel like we are hearing more and more towards a narcissistic bent, and I so I don't discount that words. Let's take it out of the mental illness aspect of it. And just say narcissistic, self serving activities to me seem to be on a rise as a culture thing. I completely agree agree. And if you don't like the word, narcissistic, it's just selfish. It is just thinking of yourself before somebody else, and we all do it to some degree in different scenarios some more than others. But. I agree that are maybe because of the screens maybe because his social media, but I see more and more to in a in a younger generation. But I also think seed in my generation of people that are just like, no, I'm taking time for me. And I'm I'm thinking about me, and there's a fine line between doing what's best for you, which is just boundaries. And you do need to have those and then doing with best for you. And not having any regard for anyone else. And so what we're talking about this having no regard for anyone else to keep those healthy bounds. I love what you said. Because I feel like we tend to focus on the extremes a person who does nothing, but pour out to others in wears himself down and the other person who sometimes that person recovering who goes the other way and starts alive of only serving themselves, and that balance is going to be different for everyone. I used to be way impulsive I used to be so reactive, and I used to do something do something do something, and it was actually a detriment to our business. She's like, but what if it does? I'm like damn it. Right. There has to be a checks and balance. I think what's been good about our company. Now is that we had hired a good friend of mine. But also, our our CFO who holds me accountable both sides like for me, I want you everything yesterday. I want to go. I gotta get after it. And I think that's a really good treat half. But then him he's much more reserved much more like knowing you think this through and so we kind of play off each other. Really well, and so I think if you do find yourself as a person who never actually commits in anything done you need to find somebody who can hold you accountable to get them done and vice versa. If you're someone who is reactive is wants to put it out there. He didn't find someone to kind of. Put you in check a little bit. And at least makes you aware of the pros and cons decisions. And I wish I had had that earlier and business because it would have solved some bar problems. I think yeah. I I've definitely gone on massive tangents, and it it does get cured with what you talk about in the mentality, which is like finding your why it sounds cheesy. "Yeah that's funny utility bill that you hit the word manipulation we hear that come up i think simon cynic uses that and just kind of like it's basically just monkeying with the system the long term impact this ends up being negligible as as things work themselves out especially for a company that is very focused on growth when you when you have hats i think one of the big things that happens is you get addicted to marketing in a hacky fashion meaning that the marketing team and the leadership team is always looking for tactics that will sort of quickly move the needle even if it doesn't create longterm more long term value because you need to keep showing that crowing growth rate right the hockey stick needs to happen so that we can raise our next round of investment so that we don't get shut down so that you know the leadership team doesn't get replaced by the board all those kinds of things and in seeking that hockey stick and getting addicted to the very frankly sort of a drug of of growth hacks you're gonna hit a wall at some point unusually that's that's pretty quick growth hacks as showed in the book a bunch of them even the ones that are most famous the airbnb won the dropbox won the mike sauce hotmail hack right survey monkey that like these little one off hacks date until and unless they get backed by a product that keeps providing more and more value or a marketing flywheel they keep spinning with decreasing friction they essentially cost you more in the long term and end up meaning that you have to find another solution for that declining growth rates hacks tend not to be consistently powerful they're they're very short term focused so you get a spike you don't get amount right in what you're looking for his up into the right consistently over time with.

"Okla mean that that simon cynic talks about but i okay you may have just convicted i'm going to report back to you on that okay well here but here's the thing is the reality of it right if female as in your embarks it ain't going no it'll it'll white very patiently not a few hours finally jobs all right okay i'm gonna you've got a hold me accountable okay i liked that i you just go you just spoke to me okay i got my monies was right there all right fourth spoke is is financial and again i don't know if you if you had financial struggles in the past but were you know what are the things that you're doing our have done to keep things healthy i have had struggled before and the path a my early twenties always quite heavily in debt and you know what my way out of them now quite frankly we we actually as a family we have a budget every single month that is literally on a piece of paper and we know exactly where we're going to spend where we're going to be spending wall and even though financially i can more than enough a full to go way beyond that budget if i want we stay within the budget we saved a certain amount every month we enjoy a little bit every month as well we tight regular family trips um and and obviously wants to treat myself to a nice awful of single moltes when i'm visiting scotland's i will do so but you know generally speaking man you know what i what i make is put so is put back into the business it's some donated that there are a lot of charity stuff and i just i believe in the power of just budgeting and giving back and that's kind of what we focus on my my son you know he's got free jaws in his bedroom he gets the equivalent probably of around about five dollars a week in pocket ma.

"So these are all this is just part of the lifestyle and that drains you of ma money but they think it's money well spent but there are more there's more to it than just that i came across yesterday this fascinating video that wife he shared with big millennials i've got i've got four okay i've got four of a a collected you know i collect i collected the quad set all set and the whole quad set all of them were pretty they they kind of break the mould for millennials except for one one has a lot of stereotypical clinical tests but stem it's still really good kid so wifi shows me this video shows us this video yesterday cluding the millennial in question and and he watched the video he agreed with a lot of it this is a guy named simon cynic cynic some of you probably know who this guy is is he was new to me wifey was with the with the girlfriend's over the weekend the watching videos by this guy just completely different from what guys would you if i were added guys weekend you know we'd be it it was either be some of that on and it would involve a probably you know golf target shooting now what she not what you could structural videos of millennials which oh she's a we love the women will habash for the women we love the women so bottom line is this simonsen a he he nails it regarding millennials he's a guy shared and safe 43 and the outer edge of the millennium declaration little bit on the outer edge but a brilliant thinker thought leader business guy does a lot of speaking to business groups so he explains why millennials are the way they are okay now with that lengthy set up which which was all over.
