The Army Is Expanding Allowed Hairstyles For Women

"For years, Most women in the U. S Army were required to wear their hair short or pinned back into a very tight bond that time has now passed. Earlier This year, the Army began allowing women who spent most of their day away from the field freedom from the bun. And this month, the army updated that changed to allow female soldiers. A little more freedom. I actually started Tolo practice braiding my hair because I was so excited that we were going to be able to braid our hair and wear ponytails that Sergeant Nickel Pierce, who works at Fort Sill in Oklahoma, she's been able to wear braids and ponytails since January, and now she's able to wear them untucked so long as they don't go past her shoulder blades, thanks to the update to the updated grooming policy. Major Terry Taylor, stationed at Fort Stewart in Georgia has enjoyed not having to chemically relaxed her hair because locks, braids, twists and cornrows can come together in one or two braids or a ponytail and still meet regulation with lax. There is a style called barrel rolls. And which are hair can be rolled back. Taylor usually pins up the ends, but now she can leave them free if she wants very professional and appearance very neat. And it's very user friendly because that style can last at least two weeks, so that allows me to not have to manipulate my hair is much no loose ends from Major Farren Um, A Campbell in Silver Spring. Maryland. Yes, so in the Army on pretty much known as the bald major within my unit on the only bold female she suffered hair damage and loss after years, wearing her hair in a tight bun. And she's not alone. Many black women soldiers reported having that experience Major Campbell says she's happy. The U. S Army allows her to be bald by choice and do shave my head and it's been a very freeing change within a regulation. It's not just comfort here. Thick hair buns make it difficult for women to wear their helmets properly, making it low on the eyes, sometimes obscuring vision. Ah, problem when you have to aim your weapon. We've all mentioned. Some of these things were long overdue that Sergeant Major Jennifer Francis of the U. S. Army Institute for Surgical Research at Fort Sam in Houston, Texas, She was on the panel that gave input to leadership about updating the grooming guidelines. We are an army and we can't necessarily do everything civilians are doing so we've got to figure out what's best for the Army. And its people. Women now make up about 15% of the U. S. Army, and about a third of those are black. Many see rules against certain hairstyles as outdated at best discriminatory at worst. Major Terry Taylor, now set to retire after two decades of service says how a soldier wears her hair when she's on base does not change her leaf aladi or her professionalism. Who's to say that a ponytail is not professional in appearance? The Joy of 'Jingle Jangle'

"If you're looking for a mood boost in this season then. I've got just the movie for you to check out netflix's general jangle. I was absolutely caught up in the wonder and magic of this film. And i won't even tell you how many times i've played the soundtrack but beyond the magic i feel like there several life lessons to be gained from the film as will joining me in gushing over the movie today is jordan. Madison jordan is a licensed clinical marriage and family therapist originally from brooklyn new york currently living in silver spring maryland. She received her. Ba in psychology from spelman college in her ms couple and family therapy from university of maryland. College park and works as a family therapists at friends in transition counseling services in maryland. She's also one of our contributing writers here at therapy for black girls jordan and i chatted about the themes present in the movie. Why a film like this was so necessary right now and the importance of staying connected to our sense of play and wonder as adults. This episode does contain spoiler. So please save it until after you've had a chance to enjoy the movie if there's something that resonates with you while enjoying our conversation please share with us on social media using the hashtag. Tv g in session. Here's our conversation and be sure to stay tuned after my conversation jordan for an interview with two jingle jangle youngest man. Thank you so much for joining me today jordan. Thank you so much for having me you. So i'm very excited that you were able to join me because i feel like jingle jangle is the single most just adorable. Wholesome like swedish thing. I have seen in quite some time. I write it is really yeah. It really felt like a bom at this point in the year. That is twenty. Twenty right Yeah so. I know that you also had lots of thoughts and feelings about jingle jangle so i love to just kinda here. You know like on a cursory level. What kind of were your initial reactions to it. Like you said i mean it was just definitely a feel good movie. Great to see black culture black hairstyles. He saw dance moves. You saw so much of the culture in the movie itself as well and so that was great to see. I loved the grandparent aspect of it. I have you know amazing parents than they had me. Young and so. My grandparents have always stepped in albany very integral part of me growing up so i love that part that definitely warned my heart as well so the movie it was it was great. Yeah and it wasn't really something. I was expecting to love so i think he came out earlier this year. Right like in november. And i saw people talking about it and i was like. Oh maybe i'll have the kids wash that like a little closer to christmas or something. I mean then. I found out it was a musical and i'm not usually a fan of music. That was like oh i'm gonna love that and then we watched did the first time in the evening and i just first of all i probably teared up within like the first fifteen minutes right because it was so beautiful. You know and like you're mentioning. Just lots of layers in terms of the family dynamic and just like you said gorgeous hair styles and just it was shot beautifully right so i think it just put me. All of my feels in a way. That i wasn't necessarily expecting. Yeah i think my first time watching it. My dad and my step mom and my two siblings live in atlanta but i am currently in maryland in we decided to watch it together over net flicks to and that was nice and then we watched it again. I wanna say it was thanksgiving evening or sometime around the thanksgiving holiday inn. So it's definitely a nice family movie but like you said. There's a lot of generational things that i saw that were woven in as well so i really appreciate it. I think it's a great movie for all ages. Yeah i agree. I agree with it now. Because i feel like i can't ever really watch anything without like picking up some additional meanings. I definitely feel like i was able to get lost in it. Which i think was a part of the fun that i was able to really kind of get lost in the magic of it in a fantasy of it but i did still kind of walk away with like. Oh there was a mess we can use f. or something else right so tell me about maybe some of the messages that you got from the field ivory washed it now. Maybe three to four times. There's like three major themes standouts to me so one was just belief like believing in yourself believing in the magic of things and therapist in me kinda boiled down to like imposter syndrome and how that can make you not believe in yourself but also the like the pros and cons of it right because the competing toymaker. He stole the ideas from toronto. Will you know him taking drama things. It just showed me that. What's for you is for you. So even though he took it and made a profit in the beginning when that lasts invention that he tried to steal didn't work to me. It was because you didn't know what it took or what was the meaning or what was important behind. It like how drawn did because he's who created it. It didn't work for you so even though you tried to steal his shine it still ended up. Not coming to you. The way that you expected and then for dronka's like once a believer always a believer. So i think with his phil successes. It made him forget who he really is in. It reminded me sometimes with myself or with clients that i see that when things don't go our way we sometimes start to feel like maybe this is not for us when maybe it is. It's just that we're having some difficult times. That doesn't mean that it takes away who you are what you were created to do so. That was the first team that stood out to me because belief in the magic and all of those things in that being what made the the code that he would write in work and stuck out.

If you're familiar with that neighborhood officials from Baltimore Gas and Electric are on the scene investigating and what we're hearing it from residents, both on social media, and in other reports from our colleagues who are up there is that there were two consecutive blast that caused this damage. That's what residents heard. Seeing an aerial view of the neighborhood. It's there. These row of you know, brick, two story houses and then just a massive crater in the middle of this neighborhood, where three homes used to stand just covered with debris. The train with 31 people on board was leaving the Silver Spring station on July 7th, and it rolled right past a red signal is the control center was switching the tracks so the tracks shifted underneath the train, derailing the front wheels of the second car due to the timing of the train. The lead car diverged from the main line heading into the pocket storage track there. Dr. David Mayer is the chief executive officer of the Washington Metro Rail Safety Commission. During the response to the derailment. There were radio equipment and other communication failures, Mayor says they now have to sort through all of the evidence collected to see if it was operator error or one of those technical glitches that led to the incident. None of the passengers were injured, but it took three hours to get trains moving again. "Silver spring, but we don't know whether people or equipment are to blame. Dr. David Mayer is the chief executive. Officer of the Washington Metro Rail Safety Commission. During the response to the derailment, there were radio equipment and other communication failures, Mayor says they now have to sort through all of the evidence collected to see if it was operator error or one of those technical glitches that led to the incident. None of the passengers were injured, but it took three hours to get trains moving again. Michelle Morello w T. How to Begin to Restart, with Mark Ein

"Welcome to no challenges remaining. I am Ben Rothenberg on this week's show. I am joined by Mark On. Who was the owner of the city open tennis tournament on the ATP and W T tour which is held annually in Rookery Park in Washington DC is a terminus Ben at the same venue for fifty years as a big standing tradition in the summer tennis calendar in the United States and it's also potentially the next tennis term on the calendar with a bunch of determines before it having been canceled is only April but already we know that there will be no European clay court season at least pre Wimbledon and all the grass season has gone so Washington suddenly stands in April as the next big landmark on the tennis horizon with being the first big combined? Atp WTI tournament still on the schedule currently so with that in mind? We talk mark about what it's been like this while is uncertainty different contingencies. That are being talked about in the tenth world and hopefully you'll find this conversation illuminating in these strange murky times. Here's mark very happy to be joined on the show today by mark on who is. The owner of the city opened the Washington tennis tournament Washington. Summer tennis tradition I believe is your slogan eighteen. Wto tours the annual stuff every late July early August although this year obviously there's a lot of uncertainty in the air so mark. Thank you very much for being on here and chatting in this in this weird moment. We're having appreciate it. Always always great to chat. And and Ben. That's more than a slogan it is. It's true no it's true. It is washing summer tennis tradition. I one of the first times I went to the city opened which was send the League Mason Tennis Classic Back in the Ninety S. I want actually WANNA radio contests for tickets for some. I forget what the Trivia question was by some trivia question and they asked me which days I wanted tickets forge session for. They gave me like all possible sessions and I picked the final Michael. Chang wanted that year and remember that so I remember that one and I might started mine. Vomit tournament is a ball kid when I was twelve years old. So for Eddie dibbs and Harold Solomon engage. All short guys like myself a shot. I thought that they might actually be on the court someday. But that didn't happen to turn this into Eddie. Dibbs podcast briefly. I believe I believe he was the one that came up with the term Bagel that sort of his lasting like they were they were the Bagel brothers. Eddie dibbs Herald Sun Herald was from Silver Spring Maryland. Down the street so there's Great Danes as Gray Days. So you own the tournaments. Since last year the term it was in danger of moving out of DC and it was for sale in you bought it and kept it in DC. Which I many others are grateful for. I'm just curious how. How is your first year owning attorney? What was that first experience? Like as you've been in tennis for a long time and other other serves two roles but was that experience like and I guess looking forward a little bit. What kind of stuff we are looking forward to for for twenty twenty. I'm it was. It was fantastic and we really had is a great fifty year old man. It's the fifth biggest tournament the United States one of only the only ATP five hundred in the United States and one of only five combined events and You know it was a really terrific event but we had this vision for how we can take to to totally new level and so even though we got it we literally only got control of it. In March I thank so it was a real sprint to get it ready. You know I think we did we really. I think revolutionized the event can complete change in the site. The Food and beverage the player experience. Everything we really wanted to touch. Every single component of the event our motto was that we would never say. We're doing something because that's the way it was done in the past where we're going to try to thank. Outta do things differently and you know. The results were incredible. We broke every record. The tournaments ever had everything shattered them on and what was really great. Was that when we started the week? It look good but it didn't look like it was going to break records that people came to the site and went to the new food area and tried the food people like Jose. Andres and people locally. We had the best ice cream plays July. The best coffee plays the best burger plays. Moei came and did stuff of through word of mouth it. Just people started coming incoming. We ended up selling out seven of the eleven sessions. And I think what it just showed to me. Was that tennis as we know from events like Indian Wells and the US Open and a whole lot of events when it's done well a high level people respond tenants fans common. They love it but then other people come. I think that was really rewarding to just see this great reaction and our team work really hard and so it's really gratifying. And then yeah we didn't I mean we we were. We are planning on building on last year. We have a whole set of new food and beverage partners new seating areas a whole bunch of stuff that we were about to launch the campaign to talk to people about in Indian Wells and obviously that was the first event to be cancelled and we also put a pause on our marketing efforts. It seems like in the current state of the world. That's not the most important thing but whenever we pick it up hopefully this year or whenever it is we're going to build on last year and just keep building and growing and We have really high really high goals for that sort of the moment. I think that everybody in tennis will point to is sort of when things got real and the corona virus situation for tennis getting cancelled which has happened very shortly before that terminus supposed to start the day before quality started. What was your reaction to that news and I guess had you had already been on your radar from from the city open perspective before then or was that really the wake up call moment. I think that was kind of I mean. There is a series of you. Know a series of things happen that heightened your sensitivity to it But that was maybe the tablets to saying. Oh Wow this is different back as soon as it happened. I texted one of my best friend who happens to own an NBA team. And I sent him a note and I said this isn't just for. Tennessee is big for all of sports. Because you know at that point no one had cancelled any. It wasn't just the percentage of that. It was the first major sporting event to be full. And Yeah and here. We are today. So yeah that whole time and and you know Indian Wells really is a mecca for everyone in the tennis world the whole global tennis community flocks there every year. And it's almost five hundred thousand kids almost big as the French Open or close to beg so some of that size and scale gets cancelled. It's opened a lot of people's lives up to the issue. We're dealing with what once you're once. You're that sort of alert happens. Then I guess. Obviously all the children's center immediately after that our media on standby like Miami Charleston. Houston but for you what. What was your thought process on how I'm watching? The ripples of this work their way through the calendar. You know it's so interesting ban. I mean that was not even I guess it was just about a month ago and you just today. We know so much more 'cause we're all quasi obsessed with every little detail of this if you can put yourself back to where we were a month ago. We had no idea about tests vaccines and treatments and social distancing. I don't think that at the time we necessarily at all thought. Oh this is gonNA endanger the prospects of hosting. The city opened obviously enters. Your mind was totally unknown. What we were dealing with a month ago and obviously all know so much more today but back then we thought. Maybe it's a possibility but we definitely didn't think that it was a foregone conclusion. What does this last month? Ben Like for you. What is it like sort of from this event? Obviously everyone's lives period. You're staying indoors like everybody else. I'm sure but what is your just from the from the Tennis City Open Van Vantage Point? What is it been like for this month or so? Yeah I mean look. The first thing that I focused on was just make sure my family is safe and healthy and that we were set up in a way so that everyone in the family would be okay. That was the first thing and then frankly bend the the next thing I had to focus on. Is that we have you know we own our own a lot of a bunch of companies and I really wanted to make sure that and it was clear this was going to be a rough economic time and so I wanted to make sure the people who work in those companies were in good shape as possible and I'm really proud that as of today we haven't had zero layoffs furloughs salary reduction just because we've been laser focused on figuring out how to. Mirol in pretty good shape and had resources but also just really protecting the people who work in those companies was my next priority so even I'm not going to the office. I'm working. I think I work pretty hard and I'm working harder now than ever just trying to do that. And then you know and then there is a lot of work around planning for the city open and it's different because it's not in front of us. Obviously I wanted to make sure the team that works on. It is safe so we were very early and having people work from home. And now we're just scenario planning bandit some you know. There's really four scenarios one is the event goes off as usual To is is that it goes off without fans which is the topic of a Lotta conversation in a lot of sports. Three is a hybrid where it goes off but there are some fans an enforce. Obviously it's cancelled and You know we're doing everything we can to problem solve and be creative to find a way that we can do it somehow but it only is going to happen if we can assure that it's safe for people And so just a huge amount of work going into China. Figure that out.
