It's just a line song. Thanks seats about the way roach. They work. But i like to think that all of seamers then i can. Sometimes i my favorite author in the whole world is neil gaiman a fiction fantasy writer neil. Gaiman stolen a lot from him for example in daham in the memorized in mccarthy number. There's a line that i'm paraphrasing. But i basically. I stole from meal game. Gaiman wrote a piece on memory as a tribute ray bradbury and the way. It's found its way into my performance. Are some point my memorize cut in the number thing. It's multiple face asleep basically for faces where someone means the card. Someone named the number. And i find it i it once i do it twice and before i believe the third thing i would help people. Let's try something a little more ambitious. This might not work in doesn't always work but we might as well trite bitter to try and failed. Believe wondering what would have happened if we tried right and of we i personally. I think that tiny lang gave salora of to the peace. That's a light leaf us. From neil game and i'm proud minute because they took inspiration from someone. I admired for one context and night market would be a good fit and adapted to a different context. I think it's stealing a conscious sucked. It's not out of laziness eats out of. I'd like to think of it. It's taken inspiration from the world in which will then again in this case. It's a very specific line. That i took from an outside inspiration in some things. It's a concept sometime it. It's just a way you approach the work show. Show ask with so many you've pivoted to doing these. Virtual shows now. What have you learned in the journey that you've been on with them day most straightforward theories that i learned to perform a new medium because it is a completely new medium..

"What if i leave the table dowsett matter yes. The answer is yes. It always maps. Every single thing should be a conscious decision. If i ask you if i ask student why did you do that. I don't know is not a valid answer. There always should be rationale for absolutely everything. I understand. that's idealistic goal to aspire to easier said than done but i think that as much as we can control. Everything should be a conscious action. I think that eats the idea that anything can be. Art has been thrown out there before we all magicians want to think that magic is an art. I think that for me. My benchmark benchmark for our to be our is that it needs to be a conscious bros at realisation. There's they all discussion in the art. World about jackson pollock. Everyone could do that. Everyone could meal paint on canvas man. Yeah maybe maybe everyone could do it but he did i. He conscious act as an act of creation and express a four year. Old nephew could replicate that and for the untrained. It might look somewhat similar. but what my nephew. This east smear paint on campus. What jackson pollock did was a conscious act of creation. And that's why we keep him on museums not to mention that he was the first to nowadays success there on revolutionized card magic. You look back at their no some scar drooping in the stars of magic and needs okay. But it's okay. Because after fifty years or sixty or seventy they technology of magical of have has evolved so match the now we look back and better known some visual skudra pain. But at the was revolutionary. We they're not. None of us will be doing ambitious card period. That's the way it's interesting about pollock because you speak quite often about your influences outside if magic can you talk specifically about how you integrate those influences into your performance today. Yes some banks. I think it's essential for all of us if we aspired to be called artists to bake as much inspiration from the outside world from life and from all the arts as much as inspiration as wiccan. Sometimes those in my personal work something. Those influences are reflected in an indirect way. Some things those are reflected be not beats more direct way There are.

Docent have because some playing boy we are on the stage. Sean does a yemeni character but personality wise i. it's just me allowing myself to be a little wachira. I think it's not unusual in performance for us to consider our sales a little reserves reserved or a little introverted. I consider myself in everyday life. No the most outgoing personnel there. If i go to a party. I'm not the person who is the first to hit the dance floor. My from usually has to drag me there when among good friends. He would often talk about timing and he would talk about his his aspiration of talking about timing to magician from our timing is and some things he would realize that it was pointless because marisha don anything to because they don't have a script and they don't have a choreography to accompany the words then again. I think that all of that can be learned from iraq. This only the way. I learned it was from main source. Mentors asking at in school books by those were very very valuable. Lessons died translated to magic. I'm also a big proponent of having a scripting magic and i think that the in my mind the two main advantages of having a script is that first of all you have words what company the actual. So you don't find yourself going through some extraneous actions without an apparent outward motivation on with the audience wondering whether narratives he's doing. He shuffled that dick of cards. Three times survey. What's up with that. So i think that this can help call and these guys sections and on the other hand once we go a little deeper. They've magic atmosphere. It's been seven years since then. Let's go to ecuador your formative years in magic were as you said. Performing in central and south america tell us a bit about the differences in the magic culture there and how that impacts what you're doing today dim main difference that i see is that They magic community is very very very small. Partly because of demographics. Ecuador is a tiny country nowadays. Seven thirteen million people in comparison to almost four hundred. That you would say has where. I am right now. So that's part of it. But i did not get. The magic community was very very small. That's it. I had the extreme good fortune of meeting someone who was my favorite who became my first mentor. And these were so my who taught me not only trick some techniques but he taught me how to care about magic and how dr dick conversations we will have air early on where way beyond where you put your pinkie finger. Those were those conversations where there of course because i was just dipping. My toe seem to the waters of magic bats. Bear a son related me to think deeper about magic much. We care than i would. Older whites have done. Sure as i understand it. One of the reasons that you went to la was to study acting. Yes yes yes how. How important do you think acting is for. Magicians i think eats essential. I think there are many many many lessons to learn from acting. I have the good fortune. That was polling. Thing my life where i could basically. I have the luxury of being able to enroll at college for acting. I community shelia nine thousand to join acting school for two months after that one thing led to another. I ended up doing a two year program where i got an associates degree that means to degree a official education degree hearing the us that gave me so so so so much however there are people for leafy magic proficient magic performers who have no formal training in acting but still have been able to absorb a match from the world as possible. I think that formation in fear there amin stage performance these essential whether formal or informal is there and some magicians might learn all without even realizing. But you know that they are aware of the basical six of theatre and performance eve. You've learned those from abukar inter- and speed up the process much better do you think is the single most important thing. Those two years two.

Plus distinction between the general played by nigel havens and siegfried who is generally thought to be quite porsche in in the village but when he meets somebody who's really push is clearly being looked down on so he buys a new suit and i mean at heart he he loves horses and it's not hard to love horses in a lot of teenagers love horses and never lose that love their extraordinary creatures. I'm reminded of that. Chapter in gulliver's travels where he goes and meets the winner names or however you want to pronounce it and they and their extraordinary and beautiful and wise and then about halfway through the chapter. You realize their horses and much more beautiful than than humans. I think it's his dream job. Spent a lot of time around thoroughbreds and we had a couple of days. Rippin racecourse in yorkshire. And it's it's like being surrounded by at coin supermodels. I mean very extraordinary things that just that incredibly efficient. It's like a sort of horse designed by machine. That does absolutely nothing about them. That isn't designed to run incredibly fast. Like a what i spent. But i think yes. It's everything he's ever wanted because it's a combination of a job that he will love and be good at and knows a lot about and has some security and also has some shininess attached to it. I mean it's not exactly that he sort of looking up in the world but it but it would be a very important thing for him to have for the business and for his own stature in the community and for his own stature as a man. i think So he goes off to the interview really really wishing he can do it and of course. It doesn't always work out. That way i mean. Siegfried stands up to ransom when the horse falls then bonds with the fallen horace looking in the eyes gently stroking his muzzle. Shooting yourself right haven't you but you're fine more air into another good kill them up and.

"I think so. We're at this weird point where the virus seeded different points in different places so the the escalation is happening. Obviously in New York at a rapid rate it's happening in Seattle at a more rapid rate. There's there's parts of California which happening at a more rapid rate. I'm obviously new. York is the big problem right now but we can anticipate that. There's going to be bigger problems later. Do you think we should have more of a national approach or do you think the regionalism we have. Right now make sense. I think we need to go to a domestic travel lockdown. Maybe I'm a little bit more heavy handed in this and I think we need to be really a plan for four to six weeks of pain versus three to six months of pain or even longer we need to deal with the fact that New Orleans has become a crisis point especially in Louisiana as a state as a whole. It's going to start popping up Texas Florida. The governor there has been absolutely irresponsible when we saw those videos last week of spring breakers saying if I get corona corona the governor was told you gotta shut down the beaches because there are thousands upon thousands of kids there and he said okay. I'll shut them down. I'm GonNa wait ninety six hours before they're actually shut down because I don't WanNa hurt tourism. It's there's a lot of stupid decisions being made by politicians on both sides of the aisle thankfully we have people like Andrew Cuomo Mike DeWine Jared Polis Gavin. Newsom actually making smart choices. Unfortunately it doesn't extend to the federal government at least among our elected officials in it doesn't extend to other governors and local leaders such as Bill Blasio. Who said no? You can still take your kids to the playground. But everybody should go outside. I mean like the thing that frustrates me about some of the southern states and stuff like that that are sort of. Just you know waving this office that this will come. I mean you already have cases how did you get those cases? You know what I mean like. This could get worse. The you know there was a time when New York also only had a handful of cases and now look at where we are. You know so the idea that there isn't some sort of minimum for all of the states I think is baffling because the virus will come like it's in Hawaii. It's an Alaska. How did it get to those places? If there's theoretically isolated geographically you know what I'm saying so there's something that's strange about how this idea that That you know the increase is not coming to some of these states like Oklahoma or whatever is baffling What are you seeing a wooded you WANNA see right now from from the from the president in handling one thing I wanna see is I don't WanNa see this isn't even from the president but I don't WanNa see the press conferences broadcast anymore. Journalists need.

"He's just like, well, he prays, and as you crease comes through and sleighs dragging. He doesn't have a trick. You know, or maybe prayer is like a trick here. I'm not sure the I guess prayer is the trick. I mean, again, a lot of these stories you look at some of the Greek myths to defeat the monster one must use wisdom or weapons that are a gift of the gods. Yeah. So what is the difference? I guess alternately between that and prayer. Right. Well, I guess it would just make a better story. Like if as crease came down and gave him a magical weapon or something. Yeah. Give him a, you know, the the armor of Christ or something. Yeah. Some sort of fancy sword. And then we can get the idea. It's like, oh, yeah. We're on God's side. You can slay dragons I get the same message. But it's a little more entertaining at least for me. Right. But of course, as we mentioned earlier, this is sort of part of Asia on RAV stories that proliferate around the world. There are all these dragons. Sling stories, especially there, of course, medieval dragon slaying stories. Yeah. And I mentioned Joyce tally land Orense earlier mentioned that she was an expert on medieval dragon slayings, medieval dragons, I was reading a something. She wrote titled the sign of a hero the automatic saga of burn. And in this. She points in a number of interesting things about some of the tales, we've discussed the more specifically, the Arctic the the great beowulf and Siegfried so she points out that in German literature. Especially dragon swing becomes something of a defining characteristic of any hero. What's it? Like, you're like, I'm a hero is like Adam did just lay dragon. Exactly. I mean, that's the that's the problem because then how do you draw the line between standard heroes and truly mighty heroes. If they're all monster slaying and in doing so also the act of swing dragon ends up serving perhaps less of a symbolic purpose. Right. I mean, you're not defeating chaos or the devil or the the, you know, the powers of the dark or it's not serving as a Mark of passage into adulthood is just like a necessary upgrade in the arms race of storytelling. So in the particular old Norse saga that she's dealing with in this paper. She points out that the tackles the problems of including both the the great and Siegfried in the same story. So what the what the story does it make Siegfried into? Theatrics vassal. It makes them kind of the sidekick right kind of wig life can. Yeah. But also gives the Arctic to dragons and three. Baby dragons to kill. So in doing this..

The first four lines of Siegfried seemed to exemplify Franks ability to be romantically involved or infatuated with someone, but lacking the capacity to be emotionally intimate relatable with them. As the opening verse continues, this theme of alienating becomes much more prominent..
