So the NFC has, did you know the NFC has seven teams that are 2 and 0? Okay, Washington, San Francisco, Dallas, Eagles, Saints, Bucks and Falcons. First time in NFL history, seven teams in a conference starting 2 and 0 in the same season. No kidding. You would think that's not that big of a thing to start 2 and 0? No, but you're right. And apparently, you know, there were a lot of cross -conference games. True. And I think the NFC is dominated in this, right? And there are more undefeated teams in the NFC East, three of them, than there are in the entire right AFC now. So is the NFC back after two games? It's hard to say. Yeah. It's still too early. Yeah. "There's definitely some challenges that the market's been working through. We're in kind of a much needed consolidation phase, I would say. We have a market pulse index that we like to look at, which is a sentiment indicator. It looks at six different signals across the market and kind of assesses risk tolerance. Risk taking into July was huge. Everybody was piling into risk assets within equities. So now, I think we're getting a little bit of a breather from that over the summer. And again, it's kind of just a much needed consolidation and a little bit of a blow -off steam. But longer term, things still look OK. So what's interesting today is that yields are jumping higher again. And I kid you not, dot, dot, dot, Canadian inflation. Really? So that literally is moving the market. Canadian inflation came in hotter than expected. They've been the central bank that suggested a pause first, and they kept hiking after that. And that is definitely moving the bond market. Five -year Treasury yields are rising to the highest or near the highest since 2022. Is a month of inflation priced into equities? I don't know about it being priced into equities, but certainly a lot of it already is priced in. So we run our fair value model on the S &P 500 and Russell and rates are a key component of that. And multiples, while a little bit high, if push you rates even a little bit higher than maybe the Fed's going to go on either model, not there's a lot of downside to stocks. So a lot has already been priced in. that's So a good sign, right? On the flip side, one of the things that we're closely watching as well is the yield curve, right? So the two's is the 10 -year minus three month curve. And can that eventually be supportive for maybe financials as that starts to steepen off of its low. On a factor side, are we big cap, small cap, momentum? What are we doing here at this stage of the market? So it's interesting that you bring up momentum. actually We put out a report last week on dispersion. See Paul reads. Paul pays attention. This is the takeaway. But basically we were watching stock dispersion. So within the S &P 500 and the Russell 2000, basically what's the standard deviation of returns across stocks in that index. And it's pretty high, especially in large caps. So we're in the top quintile of dispersion in the large cap market near in the Russell 2000. And when that's at a high level, kind it of signals what we call a momentum crash could be on the way. Now momentum crash isn't something to be totally worried about. It's usually that the bottom end of momentum, so the stocks that haven't worked as well start to pick up. So quite frankly, that could be a welcome sign for the market if some of the stocks that haven't gotten wind start to get wind and broaden out the market rally. 4 .5 % Paul, that's what I'm talking about. Five year yields hit that number, since 2007. Five year yields. I didn't know we were supposed to follow the five year. I followed the two year in the ten year. Now I have to do the five year as well? Whichever is going to make the best superlative, I think you can just take it. So I think it just depends. I think what this does point to is when you talk about momentum, we price in a lot when it comes to the Fed. And I'm just wondering where are we cheap enough that you need to start looking at pure valuation versus the macro headlines. So valuation is actually really interesting across the S &P 500. If you look at it versus a five year pre -pandemic average, which is how we like to look at it, just because 2020, 2021, obviously a lot of easy money in the system pumping valuations higher. But if you look at it that way, tech and discretion are the only sectors the in S &P 500 trading at a premium right now. Everything else has had a discount to that five year average, led by things like communications, financials, real estate. So there's plenty of discounting in the S &P 500. If you look at it on the Russell 2000 side, there's a little bit less. We tend to look at it on a price to sales basis instead of price to earnings basis, but still than more half of the sectors in the Russell 2000 are discounted. So plenty of discounts out there. All right, Michael, thanks so much for joining us. Michael Kasper, Bloomberg Intelligence Equity Strategist, joining us here to give us some thoughts on these markets. Again, the S &P 500 off about two tenths of 1%. Let's head down to Washington, DC. We'll get world and national news it. with Paul Sweeney, there were shouts of freedom and tears of joy as five Iranian Americans have been held in Iran for years, returned to US soil this morning after a prisoner swap at the White House hopes will lead eventually to further talks on Iran's nuclear program. Siamak Namazi was first off the plane at Fort Belvoir, Virginia. He had been held for eight years. We've taken for granted having a family together. We've been apart for eight years and finally we're together. Finally, we're together, says Siamak Namazi. And while President Biden allowed the release of nearly billion six dollars in Iranian oil assets to secure these Americans' release, White House national security spokesman John Kirby says this does not change the US posture against Iran. Last Friday, we designated some additional Iranian entities for the way they treat their protesters. And just yesterday, we designated more entities for wrongful detention. So we are still going to put sanctions on Iran as appropriate. John Kirby at the White House speaking there on ABC's Good Morning America. Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich has been back in a Moscow courtroom today. He is appealing an extension of his pretrial detention that's set to keep him behind bars into November. Gershkovich has been held since March on espionage charges. The US has said he is wrongfully detained in Russia. India has expelled a senior Canadian diplomat and is accusing Canada of interfering in its internal affairs. This comes a day after Canada's Prime Minister Justin Trudeau took to the floor of the House of Commons in Ottawa and accused India of being involved in the assassination of a Sikh independence advocate in British Columbia. Earlier this year India calls that allegation absurd. President Biden speaks at the UN General Assembly next hour and he'll be looking to build more support among world leaders for Ukraine in its war against Russia's invasion. A senior State Department official speaking on the sidelines of the UN gathering says the US and its G7 allies understand that the war will continue in the medium to long term and the planning needs to reflect that. Bloomberg Radio will have live coverage of the president's remarks. They're set to begin around 10 a .m. Wall Street time. Live from the Bloomberg Interactive Broker Studios as Global News 24 hours a day powered by more than 2 ,700 journalists and journalists in over 120 countries. I'm Nathan Hagar in Washington. This is Bloomberg. Paul and Alex. Nathan Hagar, thank you so much. We appreciate that. Thank you. It is. Blue, you know. That's usually a Matt Miller thing because apparently in Europe they do it for you, but... What? Well this is a really Rich Truman thing then. Like if he's not doing it for us, that's the problem. Well no, I like to do my own buttons.

"So let's spread of credibility. If you do a credible pause, you enhance credibility your I'd expect sterling to strengthen against the major its major pairs against that backdrop if you deliver a message that says It says we understand how this economy is evolving. We're in front of the data. We're guiding the market Being reactive to each Each bit of pricing that they're saying we got a bunch of thugs asking questions of Jerome Powell here tomorrow. What question would you ask Jerome Powell? Well, I'd be fascinated to see what the And FOMC the come out in terms of long term R star. I think for me that's the key data point economic projections we get. Do they believe it's still in that two and a half to three and a half percent range given all way the out way to two years we're seeing potential Fed funds rate north of five. Have we reached a situation where actually the FOMC have got to throw in the towel in terms of long term R star and the repricing that that would have across equity markets fixed income markets markets. Do you think they're ready to do that. We'll ask the question. get a you You might might be surprised by their propensity to give you just didn't seem wanted to go there in Jackson Hole. Oh no. In the speech. It's the skill of the Bloomberg team to tease that out isn't it. Mike McKee is better than I am. Williams will go there. The New York Fed president. What's the guidance you would take from this might be going influence. So the degree with which a debate. You're right. Almost certainly you know J. Powell is far too good an operator to to to even get tempted into into that debate. The degree to which other members of the FMC can start to frame that debate and say actually part of and we've seen financial conditions loosen quite appreciably in the U .S. economy. Part of keep it. Yeah part of keeping those elevated actually is to have that debate in public such the markets can understand what that pathways for long term our style in the U .S. economy because at the moment the summary of economic projections do not tell you that story. Lizanne Saunders was brilliant on this yesterday. John looking at the Bloomberg financial conditions index it's screaming accommodation right now. This speaks to a phrase that Lisa used reacceleration and I think we're talking about the UK at the time In that conversation in that part of this conversation the prospect of reacceleration in the U .S. something that we've heard a few times from various guesses this current disinflationary trend is transitory. Would you go that far? Oh the dangers of using that word. Look there is no doubt I mean if we're talking in the context of the U .S. economy the oil price is more significant actually domestically in the UK the gas price is more significant which hasn't taken place or hasn't moved up in the same way. Would I? Look Look central banks have carved out in the last six to nine months a focus on core inflation and therefore are we now going to sort of pivot back to focusing on headline inflation and given the impulse seems to be through the oil and commodity markets that's going to be the first order impact in pushing headline it means like you feels like you're moving the target every single time the the data doesn't conform to your narrative that that's a very we're talking about credibility talking about the credibility of central banks you've got to be consistent through the cycle not just to fit your narrative if I could put you in a press conference right now wouldn't be the feds it would be the next Bank of England yeah decision in a couple of months time that decision is in November mm -hmm the November one with the news conference that is going to be what are those forecasts going to look like for inflation do you think well in terms of that this is why it's the opportunity to talk about how the relevance of gas wholesale gas on the UK economy being the more relevant one actually I suspect the the the expectations for inflation will actually be lower for 2024 that we saw last week from the ECB remember what spooked the the markets in terms of a north of 3 % inflation print in the eurozone in 2024 we go from the OECD today 2 2 .9 % in the UK I think the bank will back into that forecast a sub 3 % forecast for CPA because of the relevance of gas which on the two -year curve is about 80 % lower than it was in the summer of 2022 when UK macro became the front page story we had Yellen talking about it we told Larry Summers talking about it because of the mini budget but it was not just the mini budget it was the dislocation of gas prices and how impact that is on real incomes in the UK you're talking natural gas natural gas in America we would say petrol I I mean petrol we confuse that we say gasoline and yeah I allow you to translate my ropy narrative the leader of gas two hours we ago were talking about where does it hurt in the United Kingdom like where will it actually affect Bank of there it is John 757 per gallon two dollars per liter I also can't believe it's the the one -year anniversary of the mini budget isn't it it's Saturday it is Simon thank you always a pleasure always learn something Simon French there of Pandora Gordon if you are just tuning in welcome to the program your equity market on the S &P 500 is slightly negative we're down here by zero point now from Washington with the latest news around the world here's Nathan Hager Tom John Lisa thank you they are back on home soil five Americans who had been detained in Iran for years landed this morning in Fort Belvoir Virginia outside Washington DC it was a tearful reunion with loved ones among them with Siamak Namazi first off the plane after eight years in Iranian custody the nightmare is finally over I've dreamt about this moment and each time I've woken up and just think in disbelief like why am I dreaming these dreams are not happening and today and tonight happened it it happened after a politically risky deal President Biden allowed nearly six billion dollars in frozen Iranian oil assets to return to Iran to secure these Americans release day five of the United Auto Workers strike against the Detroit three automakers and UAW president Sean Fain is warning of a new deadline if there's no new movement from Ford General Motors or Stellantis we don't make serious progress by noon on Friday September 22nd more locals will be called on to stand up and join the strike Sean Fain with UAW announced that on Facebook live from the Bloomberg Interactive Brokers studios this is global news 24 hours a day powered by more than 2 ,700 journalists in over 120 countries this is Bloomberg. "Us. Thanks for watching. Thanks A significant development in the effort to free five American citizens who've been in prison in Iran. They've all now been moved out of prison and have been put under house arrest. It is part of a deal to eventually grant them freedom in exchange for Washington's release of several imprisoned Iranians and the freeing of Iranian oil money. Well joining us live now with more details and insight Washington Post national security reporter John Hudson. John thanks for joining us and I'd like to know for you how to characterize this development because these negotiations have been going on for a while. Yeah well I would characterize it as a first step as a part of a larger agreement that has pretty significant implications for a very difficult relationship. I mean what we saw today for Americans coming out of one of the worst prisons in the world it's a big achievement but they're also being moved to house arrest they're still in Iran they're not free yet but that was the first step of a complex deal that is going to see the release of Iranians in the United States and the freeing up of six dollars billion in South Korean banks that Iran can access for humanitarian purposes such as food and medicine. Everyone involved in this deal says that it is you know tenuous given the acidic relations between Iran and the United States but is it in place and today we saw the the first moment of implementation. are John who these Iranian Americans and why are they being detained? Yeah so Iran has a reputation for imprisoning dual nationals and what we've seen in this group is we have a group of Siamak Namazi is one of the most well -known cases because he's an Iranian American and he's been behind bars for nearly eight years which is the longest immigration that an American has been jailed by the Islamic Republic. There's also Murad Ghaz, an Iranian American who also holds British citizenship and Ahmad Shargi, an American Iranian dual national and so those both were arrested in 2018. And so the United States has always opposed the reasons for why Iran imprisoned these people saying that it's baseless and that Iran is taking hostages to gain leverage over them but they've also said anything they'll do to to get Americans free and so these are the fruits of those efforts. John what do we know about Iranians that the US would be freeing? Very little and this is a question that I've posed to US officials and they're really not talking about it that much. in these cases you often see a push and pull between the State Department, the White House and the FBI. You know the FBI really values the people that they're able to prosecute and put behind bars and are reluctant to see those people come away. Meanwhile, the White House State Department wants to see Americans get freed so that's the tension that exists. What I've heard is that the Iranians involved are likely to be ones that were prosecuted for sanctions violations, less for you know being sort of hard and violent criminals, but a lot of those details still have to come out and we're going to be watching that closely. John, thanks for your help appreciate it. Yep, great to be with you. Washington Post national security reporter John Hudson. Traffic

".30. This is WTOP News. Everything you need every time you listen. The WTOP Producers Desk is wired by IBEW Local 26 where electrical contractors come to grow. Good afternoon I'm Anne Kramer and I'm Shawn Anderson Alicia Abelson is our producer. Top story we're following for IBEW you this hour is the latest on the country's deadliest wildfires in years. At least 36 people people have have been killed on it means federal help is on the way to fight deadly wildfires. Our prayers with the people of Hawaii but not just our prayers every asset we have will be available to them. Homes have been destroyed this is the deadliest fire in in years the US. Speaking in Utah the president said I've ordered all available federal assets on the island including the US Coast Guard the Navy Third Fleet and the US Army to assist local emergency response crews tonight along with the Hawaiian National Guard. We're working as quickly as possible to fight these fires and evacuate residents and tourists. The fires have been fanned by strong winds from Hurricane Dora passing far to the south. There are also fires on Hawaii's Big Island but the mayor there says there have been no reports of injuries or destroyed homes. Ed Donahue Washington. In the meantime CNN news source national correspondent Mike Valerio is at an evacuation center in Honolulu. He says the centers are normally used to host people who need a safe place from natural disasters but what first responders here are telling us is that infernos are not in their playbook like this, not within the realm of possibility what we saw in Maui up until you know 48 hours ago so people here were just seeing stunned faces and really just trying to process what has happened. And Hawaii's political leaders say they've received assurances from Congress that the state will the get help it needs. More on that now from WTOP's Mitchell Miller today on the hill. This is truly an all hands on deck situation. Hawaii U .S. Senator Mazie Hirono who says the state's congressional delegation has spoken with Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer about getting aid as quickly as possible to Maui. Hirono says she also spoke with Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Do whatever they can to provide support. Hirono herself had originally planned to travel to Maui before the wildfires roared across the island. While FEMA is providing immediate assistance, Congress needs to replenish its funding when lawmakers return into session. On Capitol Hill, Mitchell Miller, WTOP News. Now to war the war in Ukraine. The Biden administration is expected to announce it'll ask Congress for another $13 billion in aid to Ukraine. There are those in Congress who think the US should scale back on what it's sending there, but the administration is said to be preparing to say that this money is an absolute necessity for Ukraine to win the war with Russia. WTOP national security correspondent JJ Green joins us live with more. JJ. Shaun, talking with Ukrainian officials today and US sources, this is a critical moment in the war, critical for several reasons. Ukraine, one, is using a lot of weapons and ammunition. They need money for that. Two, there are other essential functions that the government there needs to keep stable and keep running. Ukrainians are quick to remind as well this war is not just for Ukraine and they remind us as well that a lot of innocent people have been killed just this week, as they just have been since the beginning of this war. But they say it's also for the rest of Europe and realistically they need take to advantage of the fact that Russia's military is struggling. Also there's the near future. Winter is happening. Ukraine needs to change fighting gears to prepare to fight for the winter and also to keep its residents warm and fed. So it's a very complicated situation that this 13 billion and all of these nations are going to be responsible for. Reporting live, JJ Green, WTLP News. JJ, switching to the situation in Niger, the coup leaders say they will plan to kill the president if West African countries take military action against them. What's going on? Why are they going to this extreme? So, Anne, if you look, if we take a moment and just what's look at taken place here and just sort of step back in time, maybe a couple of weeks, they made this decision to remove this president from office being the most stable country in that part of the world. they Why did make that decision? That question is still open. Then there's this question about refusing to work with ECOWAS to return someone to a democratically elected position. Why did they make that decision? And now this decision to say that they will kill President Bazum if ECOWAS intervenes, it all seems to suggest that they've been influenced by someone else or some other entity. And the folks that I've spoken to say, if we look carefully and closely at this, this all smacks of disinformation. And we know that there is a significant Russian presence there. And the Wagner Group has been there for a while. So a of lot people are wondering if this is not something that they've been pushed into and essentially offering or saying they will kill the president, closes the door, because if they do that, there's no going back for any of these coup leaders. So this is where all of that stands right now. All right, WTOP's national security correspondent, J .J. Green. Meantime, a significant development in the effort to free five imprisoned American citizens. President Biden has signed off on a deal with Iran that will allow the country to get access to billions of dollars in blocked funds. No comment yet from the White House. Face the Nation host Margaret Brennan tells us about these Americans. Four of the five Americans are considered detained. wrongfully Of the three that we know were moved, according to one of these lawyers, Siamak Namazi. He is a 51 year old man who has been in Iranian custody for eight years. He will now be, according to his lawyer, transferred to house arrest in Tehran. She adds there will likely be political heat for this move. Negotiations to free the five Americans have been going on for some time. Well, coming up Money News after traffic and weather. The biggest development ever in Falls Church is lining up tenants. I'm Jeff Claiborne. And more ethical questions surrounding Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas. It's 337. Imagine a world without breast cancer. A world where one in eight women with breast cancer.
