"In the consensus calls for a year over year increase of average hourly earnings of about 4.7%. That's down from the 5% we saw last month. Are you surprised that that number never really ticked that much higher than where we've seen in the last 6 months or so? Well, again, the hourly earnings number that we're talking about in here. Is for a very, very small microcosm of people that are employed. What I do worry about in the upcoming payroll employment numbers is to potential impact of E and on the data. It's something that was brought to my attention the other day by a colleague of mine. And it is a significant significant risk. I'm often these kinds of disruptions even though they're localized. Do you have an impact on the macroeconomic data? This time through it could wind up with a spurious increase in the hourly earnings number because hours may have been held back while compensation wasn't. What's your recession call, Steve? I mean, a lot of folks are kind of banding about. Good question. How long will it be? A, well, we have one, B, how long will it be kind of how deep? Well, again, it's not a credit cycle. So it's not going to be the depth of the recessions that we've experienced. Either from COVID or from the financial crisis. It's also not going to have any additional fiscal stimulus coming down the pipeline. So it is going to be a recession of several quarters. And it is going to be deep enough in terms of labor market against the backdrop of a very, very low start to the unemployment rate. So we could get into that 5 and a half 6 category, which is significant move up. You could say it's almost doubling the unemployment rate. Doubling would actually get 7%. But it's a very significant upward movement in the unemployment rate from how low it started. You know, it's great. Steve shut up for Halloween when his neighbor went. The natural. Sure. "Karen Moscow, along with Tom Keenan Paul Sweeney and the S&P 500 is lower this morning down about two tenths of a percent of the open down 9 points at 42 88. The Dow Jones Industrial Average down a tenth of a percent or 33 points at 33,877, and the NASDAQ down three tenths percent or 40 points at 13,086, ten year treasury down 9 30 seconds yields 2.82%, the yield on the two year 3.21%. Nymex screwed oil is down 6 tenths percent or 56 cents at $88 85 cents a barrel. Comex school done about half a percent or $8 ten cents at 1790 20 announced. The Euro 1.0157 against the dollar, the N one 34.54, and Bitcoin, it's down about half percent at $23,960. Tom and Paul. Thanks so much, Karen. Greatly appreciate it. Steve shoot us a Missouri and he knows that I know that inflation was volatile and came down quickly not once but twice after World War II. We had sky high inflation. Almost up to 20% on a Bloomberg on a monthly basis year over year got up to 19.7% boom. Came down, did it again during Eisenhower boom. It came down. Steve has shudo can inflation, boom, come down again with that rapidity. Well, I mean, it can, and it really is a function of what happens with the global economy. And that, I think, is the key consideration here. We have been looking at a currency that has been appreciating since January and is continues to be a very, very strong currency. And last month was the first month where we began to see import prices reverse. And if import prices begin to go lower on the backdrop of the stronger currency, the competitive pressures that get affected in terms of the retail component of the U.S. economy can be very, very powerful at dampening overall inflation going forward. How do you, in folks, brigida is the most grizzled guy I know at Y equals C plus I plus G plus nx. How do you respond to Steve to Young Turks who say OMG inflation's going to be persistent going to go on forever? How do you respond to that? Well, I mean, there is this perception that it is a price wage spiral. And this comes out of the academic literature that everybody learns in graduate school as an explanation for how you go from an aggregate supply curve, how you go from a labor market curve to an aggregate supply curve. And therefore, there must be some markup above wages that goes into prices. The problem is productivity can come in in the middle of that and really SAP things. Now all these people who are looking at the inflation story are saying, gee, when you look at non farm productivity right now, it's collapsing. Well, that's happened because we have two consecutive quarters of negative GDP. So the output side of the equation has come down. But the reality is there's a component called multifactor productivity. And multi factor productivity sometimes becomes an environment where you add up the input from labor, you add up the input from capital and instead of getting two output, you get three times the output. And that multi factor productivity is really the important consideration here. And I think that's going to surprise people to the upside in the next couple of months. I'm amazed that you bring that up because I was talking multifactor productivity with my youngest in her summer reading list and it didn't go well. It wasn't going well. Steve, if that's the case, if multifactor productivity is that important, how is it this time around given the technology oomph that America has? Well, again, I think that's part of the issue. I mean, we're dealing with people are saying we don't have a new technology, but we actually do the AI revolution could be very, very important in terms of the logistics abilities of the economy of the ability of manufacturing to produce more output given the unit of employment by controlling the flow of product in and out of and distribution chains into the final retail marketplace. You can wind up with more output coming out of a system with reduced numbers of workers and that's really the key factor behind multi factor productivity. Steve Tom and the Bloomberg surveillance team are heading out to Jackson hole Wyoming later this month. What question should he and Lisa and John ask some of these central bankers out there in the cowboy? I'm taking notes. Well, that's a really, really good question. And I think the problem that they themselves face is in terms of interpreting the labor market against the backdrop of what's going on in the rest of the macroeconomic environment. And getting a sense from them, how much of the demographic issues are they paying attention to, what are they looking at in terms of the uniqueness of this particular labor market and where are they going to respond to weakness in the labor market? We've had a labor market given two consecutive quarters of negative GDP that hasn't shown any signs of cracking at the aggregate levels in the monthly numbers or in the weekly numbers on claims and continuing claims in the insured unemployment rate. And therefore, if they are looking at the labor market is really the key driver behind the inflation story, then the real question is going to have to be for them is to what are they going to be looking at for a crack in the labor market. Right now, Waller is getting what he wanted. He's getting job openings coming down. Bullard is getting what he's wanted. He wanted an economy where inflation expectations are coming down. But we see that in the yield curve, but by the same token, the labor market is moving up. So clearly both of these people are heavily focused on the labor market environment and therefore the getting a sense for what's going to cause them to change their view on that because that's going to drive their decisions on short term interest rates will be. Steve, the big take story on Bloomberg news today is penned by Tom orlick and David Wilcox Bloomberg economics. And basically, their thesis is, you know, the fed lost control of inflation. They kind of missed that. And now in order to fight inflation, they're going to really run the risk of pushing us into recession. And suggesting that the fed's credibility is really in question here. Is that something you think is pervasive in the marketplace? Do you share that concern? Is that an issue for market participants? Well, I think there's two pieces of credibility that you have to keep in mind. And we published the piece yesterday about this, which is basically the markets are convinced the fed is going to do what they need to do to bring down inflation. And that's really the fed's primary credibility issue. So I don't think there's credibility in that. People believe that the curve is showing you that we're inverted between twos and tens we're likely to get more inverted between twos and tens as we get through the F one C minus and we realize this fed may not stop at three and a half. They may want to go to 4% by the end of the year pushing a two year note. The key issue then that comes back for them is, well, where is the credibility missing? Well, the credibility that's missing for the fed is not in terms of controlling inflation doing what's necessary to control inflation. The markets are saying the fed doesn't know what's going to happen with rates next year. And the market is making the assumption the fed will have to cut rates, but everything you're hearing from the fed these days is that they're not going to cut rates and maybe they pause, which fits more with my scenario. So that's where there's a credibility issue. People are saying this is a fed that told you in July of 2021 that they were never going to never going to raise rates and never going to cut the balance sheet by March, they were raising rates and talking about cutting the balance sheet. And now they've ratcheted up. So they don't know how to forecast. Right. But they're certainly going to do what's necessary to bring down inflation. It's very quickly here. "Again by 9 cents of 1% on the S&P on the NASDAQ 100 down by 1.5 yields are lower by 9 basis points to two 83 35 with your economic data is Mike McKee Good morning John Well on the inflation front it looks like we're coming in a little better than anticipated on the course side PPI for final demand on a month over month basis up half a percent that is down from 1.4% in March and it matches the survey The core rate comes in up four tenths during the month down from 1% in March and less than the 7 tenths forecast for the month A year over year basis PPI is at 11% It's down from 11.2% and the core comes in at 8.8% down from 9.2% That's a little less than the 8 9 that was anticipated The rise the increase in the month primarily attributable to a 1.3% advancing prices for final demand goods So services are down it appears a little bit I haven't quite got to that number yet Final demand construction up 4% So maybe a last gasp by builders trying to get things done Initial jobless claims come in stronger than anticipated They are up by 203,000 that's 1000 more than the 202,000 last month but the forecast had been for one 93 Now we're at levels that really none of that matters It's a rounding errors It could be some sort of unique situations in any one particular state It does tell you basically that the overall job market is still very strong Michael just whip through the price action and I'll come back to you in just a moment as you get a few more seconds to go over this We're still down In fact we're lower on the S&P about one 4% call it 9 tenths of 1% and that's that 100 down by 1.6 and a major moves off the back of this in a bond market We were already lower by 8 9 ten basis points about their level now two 82 63 crude lower by 1.4% We've seen commodities get rattled a little bit more recently Earlier on this morning you wrote a dollar with a one O three handle right now one of four 24 negative 8 9 tenths of 1% on that currency pair We're gripped by growth scare off the back of some of these inflation numbers and how the fed set to respond to it and what all this means for growth further down the road Mike can you help us understand the relationship between the PPI numbers the prices that the factory gate that you just went through And the end consumer prices just the relationship for you and what this could mean in the next few months Well there's not a direct relationship because what ends up happening The PPI measures what companies are charging for their goods Their prices and it's divided into those who sell directly to people and those who sell to other businesses And the problem is is that a lot of the price increases can get absorbed by other intermediate users in their margins So it doesn't translate directly into CPI but the fact that we're seeing a bit of a slowdown in the increases is good news It is sort of what we expected to happen on a year over year basis probably has to do with the base effects we've talked about but the fact that the core comes in a little bit lower on a month over month basis is a hopeful side Maybe too much into one month I'm glad that you talked about core does core matter as much with producer price inflation as it does with consumer price inflation considering the fact that energy and materials are a lot of the bases of a lot of the factory products that are made Yeah I mean you put your finger on it there Lisa the fact that companies are charging less for some of the raw materials or raising prices less shall we say not charging less Is going to be take a little pressure off of final demand And final demand goods So in that sense it is a little bit of an improvement And again I want to stress one month does not make a trend but it is what has been expected So that is some good news this morning Thank you buddy Awesome as always joining us now Steve for shudo Chief U.S. economist at mazur America Steve is there light at the end of this dark tunnel Well there is light at the end of the tunnel Unfortunately I think we're in the final stage of what is going to be a significant bear market especially in equities As we've started to disengage stocks and bonds yesterday and it looks like again this morning I think that's recognition of the fact that what's taking place in terms of the equity market now is a wrench on the station or a recognition of the fact that the Federal Reserve is not going to be executing the Greenspan put any time And as a result of not doing that the equity market has to be intaking down earnings expectations So far the decline in equities has been concentrated in the multiple as long-term interest rates go up the multiple comes down stock indices come down Now we're at the phase I believe we're starting to see bonds go down and equity still go down at the same time Bonds go down and yield in equities go down in price I think that's telling us that we're starting to get to the point where people need to start to downgrade their earnings numbers And that's the final shoe that needed to fall on the equity market We still could get down to that 3500 on the S&P 500 and we could still wind up with slightly wider spreads But if this trend continues with the two markets disengaged IE barn yields can go down while equity prices go down We've really reached the top in the yield on the ten year note maybe three 33 24 was would have been the absolute top three O 5 eyes where we had I believe at the top on the last couple of weeks I think we could very well be at the point where we have to top in the interest rate environment Yes Okay so there's a lot to unpack there I want to just start with what you first started on The idea of we're at the final stages of a significant bear market I'm curious what kind of recession you see getting priced into markets and frankly as the most plausible in the next 12 to 24 months Yeah you guys did a great question there I mean I think when you look at what's taking place in the economy I find the hard landing which is growth recession I think the economy is going to be running well below trend that can't discount or ignore the fact that we can have another quarter of negative GDP in here unlikely to be back to back negative quarters of GDP But we're going to have an economy running in that 1% or slightly lower growth environment over the next four quarters The reason why we don't get a classical recession is there's no major inventory overhang There's no overbuilding in any major hard asset category There are no significant financial dislocations that we know about And therefore I think in that environment the hard landing is a more realistic scenario than the outright recession but an economy running at sub 1% means Q four of a Q four growth for this year is about 0.4% in contrast to 5% last year and that takes down should take down operating earnings to about 5% growth as opposed to ten to 11% growth as has been recently discounted by the marketplace Steve we don't get the sense that the Federal Reserve is particularly concerned at this point about growth There are laser focused on inflation Where do you think inflation will be able to get down to by the end of this year and where is that going to leave the fed Well again when you think about what's happening the base rate effects are going to come off So I think we're going to lose about 3% there It's everything else beyond the 3% decline in the year over year numbers from the peak that are going to matter for the fed And I think you know I think in the reality of the situation is we're going to come down more quickly I think we can lose about half of the gains that we've seen in the operating numbers year over year So I believe somewhere between July and let's say September will see sort of a pivot by the Federal Reserve away from aggressively hiking rates to developing a more shallow rate hike scenario that will probably continue over the balance of the expansion When do you expect us to see the actual tightening matter to the economy Start filtering out to whether it's the slowdown in housing the people are expecting or companies borrowing less money Well I think you're already seeing it to be honest with him and you look at the headlines of the conversation by meta you look at what's happened to Uber you look at what's happened to lift you look at the conversation from Amazon that perhaps they may have overbuilt issues You look at the inventory of some of the retailers that we see in inventory as accumulating And then you look.

"The disconnect between what are often overly rosy are optimistic statements from senior pentagon leadership about say the training of afghan security forces. I the reality experienced by people on the ground or the reality in state. Department cables essence. I think there's an interesting discussion. Is the washington post. Did a big series on this. They called the afghanistan papers was clearly an effort to compare it to the pentagon papers. I think mullins point here gets added distinction. That's we're talking about in which there is. There is a difference between the pentagon papers disclosing secret bombing of laos never reported on or or whatever in. Us generals offering overly positive statements. Both are bad. Both are damaging both needed and fix. Yeah but the mullins point like sometimes those overly optimistic statements come from this military culture that views every job is achievable and their job is to salute and say yes and get it done and and be optimistic. But that can mean. I guess refusing to acknowledge the reality that there are limits to what they can achieve or the us military can achieve. I just thought it was an interesting I think it was the first of all like that's an astonishingly. Welcome statement by mike mullen. I mean i. It's so rare that you have a former four-star. Go out and say you know what that was wrong like that. Compare that the yeah. That's hugely to his credit And he always was an honorable guy but he was dead set backing up the surge. Forty thousand troops guy but even at that time he was backing up the trace and mcchrystal were originally mall and he saw his job as chairman. Backing them up so this leads to the second part where he said because i here's what i think i think he meant and i think he's exactly right. And who wouldn't like what what military i was on mehdi hassan's show recently. He kinda tossed me softball. Like isn't the military to blame for some this as well of course they want more resources yet. So it's hard to hold that against them. Because if i'm a general and i have an enemy i'm gonna say send more troops so i can do more to defeat that enemy and so i think that the mindset of the military is just like they they they want to believe they can achieve the mission in front of them and part of what. Mom's getting his mcchrystal. Could've come back and said you know. What actually i don't think we can defeat this enemy with a reasonable amount of resources Instead of the mindset kicking and of no i can get this done. Just give me enough to try to get it done right then. I think the second thing that happened in afghanistan ula to is that 'cause i've read afghan papers and and i i said this to you and i've gone back and forth on this i we we did relay rosy assessments of the afghan national security forces. I had no reason to not believe that those were true. You know that when when you get the dod you know guidance it suggests that there's three hundred thousand eight hundred thousand troops now. Why does the military of the they want to. They're deeply invested in in in what they're doing and i so i do remember the only way in which we might have known that wasn't true. Read deserves usually descent and often. The descent was by the way from the intelligence community right without getting into it. But like this is why. I don't think the intelligence failure arguments are true. Because the biggest skeptic of the war in afghanistan least. When i was there was always the intelligence community. Saying it's not as good as the military says it is and they have these kind of fights about how well things were going or how badly things were going. And i think that you know some of this is just human nature if you are if you're fighting and your friends are dying and and you're doing tour after tour of duty and places like afghanstan you want it to be succeeding you know and and and you want to believe the best version of what you're working on right that's of human nature right and and to me that suggests it. I don't think the problem here is with us. Military it's with tremors of giving our military or any military regime change nation building efforts right. What does that ever work. The military you ask them to go boost up you ask them to go into pakistan kill osama bin laden. They can do that because that's what military does but like you ask them to build a government in afghanistan. Why would they be able to. Great stan mcchrystal Admiral mollen brock. Obama could not solve the problem of the corruption that has created when the united states spends eighty billion dollars in a country or the problem of these safe haven in pakistan or release. The military could not be asked to solve the problem of a afghan government that was perceived as corrupt and the entire government was never able to solve the problem that everyone identified but could address of the taliban having a safe haven in pakistan. Yeah and and you know there was an interesting moment between portrays an obama on this where it was a height of the surge and portrays his explaining hide brought in these kind of anthropologists to think about canada har- and power dynamics there and tribal relations and is about as smart as a person could try to be in the challenge of governance kantar. But and i think portrays thought that obama would kind of connect with that cower them yet but obama kind of had the opposite reaction of like. Why what are we doing. You know like we can't sit in washington and diagnose the block by block politics of can hardly know like it's this is not what we're supposed to be doing this is not you know you could have the smartest generals in the world and in the idea of the united states being able to design a local government and cantu har- it would make any. We can't figure a block by block politics in miami. We can't we've got we've got. How can a country that has january six run afghanistan like we just we not like so so to me like that's where we have to get back to. This debate always has to return all the way back to like. And i did this and this is what i'm hearing. I'm not gonna lie to you. This this i like awesome point by juniper and i'm gonna miss that birth the biggest well juniper's rose she will She won't get too worked up about it and showed us keep on keeping on point the next one a nice segue we definitely i definitely want to talk about juniper and you've got a little bit of a transition here with dogs kind of adding to the mix and different styles and flavors wanna talk. Yeah all that stuff we think we should. I think we should talk about shooter a little bit. Cause a lot of people know what what's going on shoot all the time so shudo's my first dog. Yep am she was five years old. When i got her about two and a half years ago and she came from a breeder she is. She's a golden retriever and very real brett. good good pedigree. great dog and She's a hot hunter. Just perfect made for me the point in time that i was at. She's very easy doc. She's a very beginner. Friendly dog i would say right. So i can take her out and throw into a field and we walk and she finds birds like not all not a lot of other. Docs met so far but again. She's a flashing dog and she's a hell of a retriever and that's kind of what i handed over the last two years and one hundred. We're quite spread of upland. Birds was her doing seasons. People told me. I shouldn't even go out hunting. For example brad chickens december over flushing dog and things like that but she does a great job. She's wonderful she's seven years old now and so. I made the decision cautiously. I listened to a lot of podcasts and talk a lot of people that need a second dog but mainly do what. I just mentioned earlier to seeing her kind of being really tired at the end of a season and that took a lot oliver for that one hundred much and walked her that much. We walked a lot of miles. So i know i needed some power and just just live minnesota but also we have a cabin up another misconduct as you know. I do a lot of cross. And i really enjoyed hunting over point dogs the last so i decided get appointing and we got on the list waiting lists and eventually we gotta gotta young ponding dog out of painter of lavelle cow warn and really so far just blown away. She was born on january sixteenth. We picked up was nine weeks old and since then it's been a rollercoaster the beginning of walls. I'm still worrying too much. If you spare liam always to worry but but do you know she really does well and this. This idea of ninety percent of the successes. Genetics is really plays a big role in that dog. It's and it shows me because we have a rescue dog offer. Stock stock haggard. And he's just so hot to train and he's so hard to keep under control tuna kind of herself. You do you kind of describe what you wanna do doesn't matter which village strategy gopher which is a toll total another can of worms. You can open rang. How you want to train your bird talk once you decided what you to do and you go that way. It kind of seems to really wear a garden is all repetitiveness and eventually you can see delight. Just turn on whatever you want to figure it out and then to just keep doing it. And and i was focusing a lot on obedience because you know. Shoot up being sold obedient. I really enjoy that. I like a doctor listens to me. I don't like to yell too much. Even though yeah i did at the beginning quite a bit but yeah so so she's she's coming along nearly seven months old now and she's seen a lot of birds well over one hundred pigeons thanks jerry. "Between of being lockdown. I mean remember during the during the two thousand sixteen campaign as a candidate president trump welcomed welcomed from a foreign government dirt on his political opponent so here we have in two thousand nine thousand nine hundred as president with all the powers that that brings. He pressured a foreign government to dig up dirt on his political opponents son. That's a qualitative step forward to use of the office this for political gain and listen. We don't know there was an explicit connection between that demand eight eight times in one phone call and a few days later the delay of that aid I mean the timing is suspicious but even if you don't get to that point using the pressure of the office with the intent of going after a political opponents.
