Black Gun Ownership Rises Amid Pandemic, Protests For Racial Justice
"A record number of Americans have purchased guns this year including Black Americans from K. N. UNC in northern Colorado Lee. Patterson reports that incidents of violence against people of color have pushed some to purchase guns for the very first time and warning to our listeners. There are sounds of gunfire in this story. What type of gun is? So this is a Smith and Wesson nine millimeter shield cat trailer bought her handgun this past spring these as she practices at an indoor range with her husband like it's no big deal. But talking through her mask trailer describes how she felt the first time she pulled the trigger is beyond terrified shaking. Hands were sweaty. Trailer is a democratic political consultant who lives in Colorado. At first, she was nervous cleaning and shooting her new gun. And she had a bad experience, the first range she went to she says people were staring she felt unwelcome. Still regardless of the anxiety I had around. All those things. I got into this because I feel like it was necessarily trailer I started thinking about buying a gun when she saw empty grocery store shelves at the beginning of the pandemic. Then she watched racial justice protests unfold across the country. She started thinking about pushback from people who disagree with those efforts if it looks like communities, of Color and people that support communities of color are rising up against white supremacy that could be a problem for us is. It's probably time probably time for them to buy guns a thought that many other Americans have also had in. August. Alone people bought one point eight million firearms according to industry estimates a trade group called the National Shooting Sports Foundation reports the gun sales to customers have grown more percentage wise than for any other racial or ethnic group. With. Her New gun trailer wants to feel like she has a chance during a home invasion or an encounter with police. What we as the family had to determine is, how do we WANNA die? Instead of look at it that way. DO WE WANNA die not being prepared or at least trying to protect ourselves. That's how you weigh that as part of becoming a new gun owner trailer joined the National African American Gun Association Philip Smith is the founder nationally across the board from all over every state. We have people joining all times a day night. You know I I thought something was wrong with computer. Smith was watching membership numbers rise after the death of George Floyd may but black people have been using guns for hunting and protection for a long time historian say that Harriet Tubman carried firearms so did the Black Panthers in the nineteen sixties these days according to a Gallup poll released last year nineteen percent of black people own guns. Smith says his members are not monolithic. Some women join because they've been sexually assaulted some women join because they wanNA teach you some men join because they want to just get really good at self defense people are joining now for different. Reasons some want to support the National African American Gun Association Financially Smith says for others it's more spiritual I. Think people were looking for a home a place where you can kind of event you can belong where you felt your mind having a relief of some sort Bruce Tomlin a truck driver who lives in New Mexico describes his decision to buy a gun response to stress. I'll just say amounting society He felt that way after watching cellphone video showing the death of Ahmad arbitrary a black man who was shot while jogging through neighborhood in Georgia earlier this year don't. Go around arm the rest of my life. That's because he's been feeling under attack for years after the two thousand, twelve killings of Trayvon Martin, for example, and after the mass shooting at a black church in Charleston in two thousand, fifteen by a white supremacist goes like I can just be mine them all business. And if somebody who's a racist, just decide to roll up on me gun meet down. As is decided that like if I go out I'M GONNA go out shooting back. But now that he's an actual gun owner, it's not so straightforward day to day of feel like I can defend myself better defend my loved ones. But I usually get comfortable having it sometime he does not want to kill or injure anyone open carry makes them nervous I would never take my gone to the grocery store and carry around inside or anything like that. But on the other hand I could be in a situation where needed still out in the car or whatever I just like knowing that I have it gun ownership is complicated for Tomlin especially because he's black if he was stopped by police says, he probably wouldn't tell them that he had a gun. And catch trailer says the same thing giving the example of philander casteel he was shot during a traffic stop for years ago in Minnesota after telling an officer that he had a firearm, his car casteel did have a permit to carry it. Cat Trailer believes that gun cost him his life we're not given a fair shake when these conversations are happening automatically worsen tensions are assumed just because we're black, we're gun owners for both of these new black gun owners. It's an identity that comes with risks, but does make them feel safer for

"Deleo. Back Tom Gresham here. It's gun talk if you'd like to join US eight, six six, talk gone or just call me at Tom. Talk and we're pretty open lines about the things you want to talk about. If it's about guns, amunition or scopes, optics or holsters are self, defense, or training and practice to different things, not the same thing at all. We'll talk about it, and of course we we talking just a few minutes. With the guy who can tell us where all the guns words all the Mo what what has happened out there we'll get to that just a second, but first Larry's called in on four out of Casper Wyoming with an interesting story here. Hey, Larry. You're on what happened here. So the situation Tom is Street came to me this past week. I said you know we got these guns and You need to learn how to use. Home, defense. Part of the reason sees a mental health practitioner. So she feels the need to have some sense and. The clients. Is going to? Get four kids. The oldest one is thirteen and they just stare. Step down from that. That was glad. Come over your house, you know. Get the guns out if it's Wait till I get there so I. flew. Right. Through God's sake. Unloaded so I get there. They Denver unloaded, but again the end of this. Table. Okay? This is okay, so go put the relational early. And say. What you got. Well. There's whole new highway patrol in here in the state. and. His F L license. Fifteen. They've got a twelve. home because style mustard. Get A. Go Walk in the Decide Act's. And it's making less and three inches. All Inside Is. that. Okay. I said you know. Like those guns, the guns I understand why the highway patrolman. Out. That before plan. I, don't hear, too. Many people talk about four plants in took home self-defense. Okay? They walk out the door their bedroom. Send a family. from the door of the bedroom is line to the front door. To door is the two bedrooms at the kids sleeping. But, my whole concern was said anything you've got. Exception of twelve gauge. Is got so much over penetration. if kids are more dangerous than being intruded. Maybe that I I hear I. Hear what you're saying. Let me jump in because I want to address two or three things here and yes I think you're right actually. Going through the list of God's thinking. Bigger that's actually a pretty good list God. You got an air fifteen. You got a twelve gauge. Mossberg your self defense gun. You got a a revolver, three inch or Volver, and did you say there was a glock in there? Yeah GAWK ACP Okay and obviously you gotta learn to use them. Let me. Talk about over penetration. If you have kids in house, you really have to think about that kind of thing and. weirdly enough. The. Three, fifty seven and forty five will penetrate much more than the Ar Fifteen. Air Fifteen typically will go through one wall, and now through the second wall. But having, said that, of course what you don't want to have to do, you shouldn't have to worry about where your bullet going. You need to put them in the right place. If I were you and you probably have already. You're probably way ahead of me. In that particular situation, I would be inclined to advise. The twelve gauge with bird shot not buckshot. Because typical distances inside a home birdshot is absolutely won't stop a threat, but once it hits one wall, even if penetrates, it's not going to be lethal may not even be all of that damaging. I would go with something like seven or eight shot. And I know it drives some people crazy. We're not talking about using birdshot for self, but having shot through all shot all of these walls, a lot of walls. We do a lot of testing with stuff and the forty five in a three, fifty, seven, hundred, thirty eight. We'll go through three doubles of sheet rock. Air Fifteen will go through. It won't penetrate the second wall, so it's not going to probably won't exit the home, but yeah if you got kids in other rooms. You know you gotta come up with different scenarios and that's I. Think Probably Larry where you end up with I'm guessing this where you ended up with. It's really more about training that as about the hardware, right. Exactly. Yeah I mean that's kind of where we end up is okay. Let's talk about what you have and how to use it. How not to use it and you know a plan and mostly frankly in that situation, the plan is going to be kind of treating an intruder. Possible tutor threat more like a fire drill of gathering up your kids. Not Worried about going out and finding the bad guy and shoot, and it's okay we're going to split up. We're going to get the kids and our drill as we're GONNA, come back to home base, which is our bedroom locked the door? Call Nine one one be prepared there and if somebody kicks in the door, we're going to shoot them, but now we know where the kids are. They're all behind us. are under the bed or something? But I think that's where you basically treat that. As the same way you would. A fire drill of this is what we're going to do. If we do that, you know. How do you go over here and get these kids? I'm going to go over and get these kids. We're GONNA grab. We're GONNA. Bring her back into the bedroom. We're going to lock the door. We're going to hawker behind the bed. We've got get the gun. Be Ready with that. We're going to call nine one one away for the police to show up. That would be my idea, but I appreciate it, India. It's. It's hard when you don't know much about guns to know how to pick the right gun, but fortunately there a lot of people out there who can help? And I hate to say this. Sometimes, the police offered not may not be the best one in this case. I actually think she did pretty good job. We just have to supplement it with training. Let me bring in somebody who knows an awful lot about that stuff. Joe, Bartos is the president of the National Shooting Sports Foundation and also a an industry veteran. Hey, Joe, how are Ya? Thanks for inviting me this show great. It's Mossberg Mossberg for gazillion years. My ears perked up when I heard that. Shot That is.

Mike oh why is nine millimeter kind of the not only the standard now in the United States, but it also seems to be a worldwide standard. Just the inexpensive compared to most other center fires, and it's it's used worldwide. So it's very prolific. And I imagine it's lightweight to like the pistols that it is used in, like the impeach shield to oh, and you know, it's a little bit smaller than the forty and the forty five you can stuff more in that little gun. And when you say at h h shooting sports, you've got the impeach shield with the everyday carry kit. What does that mean? Well, that little kit comes with the gun. It includes a flesh and not a little little notebook carrier or holder. And that also comes with, with the integral crimson trace laser. So a lot of times a bad guy, you see that lays the bad guy sees the laser on his chest. And that's when they turn and run, sometimes you don't even have to shot. Great deterrent, for sure. "Because that sir was a handgun and apparently you don't have a problem selling handguns while you talk out both sides of your mouth this is a very fascinating topic let me go to the national shooting sports foundation of course bailed on dick's and the reason i i'm talking about this it's not that it's new news but there are just new twists in it because ed stack has come out and made some comments and giving us some commentary after the numbers came out he says as far as the national shooting sports federation it's not the national shooting sports federation it's the nss after national shooting sports foundation by the way mr stack he says as far as the national shooting sports federation expel kim miss the ceo as far as the national shooting sports federation expelling us we didn't have a whole lot to do with them stack said downplay it right mr stack he said they primarily run the shot show we would go to the shot show we don't go to the shot show now no sir you don't go to the shot show now you would not be welcomed on of the largest firearms industry trade gathering in the world at this stage of the game and you can safely say that you've lost that support from the industry now it's interesting too because you have now sportsman's warehouse ceo commenting on what happened at dick's and as i said before this is to be expected this is capitalism this is the way the free market works take a listen to this from john barker the ceo of sportsman's warehouse he says we have a diverse mix of product and the recent changes in the competitive landscape takes that he's referring to are driving more.

"Shooting sports new arkansas jimmy self is in the room with me this morning you're fairly new you're the coordinator of the arkansas youth shooting sports program i guess you'd call it now this is a nationalist nothing new it's just nude arkansas when did we start here another example of us being a leader how many states have this program in and around the nation now roughly i'm not real sure exactly how states with their several states across the united states and several states combined together doing these programs kind of briefly describe what is if there's people out there today that don't really know what we're talking about when we're talking about shooting sports program in arkansas but it's team based school based and then we'll talk about the state tournament coming up in the state of arkansas you can be a school affiliated you can be a church group you can be an ffa group and you team a five is all it takes a head coach masha trap trap only it's not skeet but trap on the clay pigeons it takes a team of five like i said all my information's on the so game fish website to start a team contact me we will get you started i would imagine jimmy there's probably not hard recruiting kids to be on a team probably the hardest parts are recruiting those volunteer coaches right then volunteer coaches are are hard to it's been pretty successful i know you majority worked through the school systems about how many schools do you have involved in this we have about three hundred and fifty school.

"Since then and and the nice thing about it is you know we have open door policy in those states have said yeah please help us it's please walking in and we were set up in a position to where we can aid and assist those other state agencies and they're very grateful for we've even had some suppose zooms and and some gatherings of other groups from other states and come to arkansas so i think we're thank arkansas may be taken the lead in this as we have in several times over the years and i think that's very important but it's it's it's something that arkansas will have to deal with but it makes us all proud and and you know sitting here before we go to break i know another thing that's that i guess started about the time you came on that is a feather in the capital thank we're leader in the nation is a thing called arkansas youth shooting sports and we're right in the middle of that after the next break jimmy sale he's the coordinator the new coordinator that program but that's another area where we've taken the lead i think in leading the nation in involving kids and shooting trap in these school teams the shooting sports and everything is just it's a wonderful deal i say it in the local schools we get a lot of comments from all over the united states and and it's just a great program it fits in with our arthri initiative that that i started on when i come on as chairman to not want to explain our three times i've learned that reactivation of those that for to buy hunting license and get outdoors and in and i say that you know i had a gentleman had a chamber commerce dinner one night we showed the hundred the century observation video and everything and he isn't what we consider non consumptive usery wasn't really an outdoor hunter fisherman but after hearing the great things that we do with education shirt with the youth sports and the archery tournaments in in everything he said you know just to help support the game and fish commission in their education part of their agency he went online with a smartphone that particular time and.

"Vice simple as that and it's a real big issue we're facing today and there's a lot more to go with it but that's another whole story and another show but i felt if we could create positive role models for other women they were interested in hunting and shooting sports we get them to come outside and participate into me if mom goes hunting for children go hunting and that is the next generation of wildlife conservationists and that's why we do this and your household your kids are all very involved they eat wild game they hunt wild game they get started really early and that's an advantage that most american kids don't have these days when we first started this radio show i knew when i looked at the demographics i'd have men twenty five to fifty four years old listening to the show and wanting to know what larry why soon as say and and different people that we think you're on the show i was shocked at the number of women who don't hunter fish that listen because they want to know what their boyfriends has been do they want to know how single moms one no i'll take their kids hunting and fishing there's a hunger for this with women absolutely there are also the ones that decide eighty percent of the purchases in the house to folks so don't forget that yeah no absolutely i mean these these ladies are very interested in what's going on here and we're dealing with a male dominated sport and historically has been that way but we're seeing these ladies the ladies of extreme hunters every year we see them break those boundaries and they create opportunities for more women to be involved and more men become accepting of them which you know i know that when i first started hunting and there was a lady in camp that wasn't cool a lot of cases and now it's getting to the point where you know my wife living i would travel around the world hunting and she goes to bed at a certain time every night once the whisky comes out but one of those deals is is that people are much more accepting they are.

"Get them kind of engaged in being in the outdoors but you you can edge are directing them away from from hunting from the shooting sports is is that a risk at meaner did you risk losing a focus on on uh on her hunting heritage you know i'm in the folk the money will that are doing enough are are during a regular they grew up hunting fishing or you know they want to go work at from food and clothing that connection to food is a big relief and why i wear tracking those boats and so i you know i wouldn't stay within our ranks um there's many you know people that don't hunter fish that are going away from that few for the shooting sports uh i would say you know there is a growing kind of constituency of outdoor users were left kayakers mountain bikers mountain climbers and so i think it's important that we work with those folks to make sure that uh that we're speaking about the same she them usac and so on but the folks were attracting though especially well area are around booed and i also think you know that millennials they're said not speak joiners whether join in our our ranks and and spades and i think the reason is because again what we're speaking out um they wanna you know join organizations that are altruistic and brands that are altruistic them by from them so i think we're doing that that someone to assure well and and that's a that's critical it's really created go because uh we've got to find a way to reach i don't you think though to i i that long history with with outdoor education in wisconsin and to end route one of the things that early on we said well we gotta get him away from the the playstations have got to get them away from the computers and get him and outdoors i i sorta come full circle saying no we gotta figure they're not gonna give those tools up they're not going to quit using their iphone we got to find a way to incorporate those into our outdoor activities said it would you agree you know i've i've but by up to that in many ways i mean i think there things like onyx maps you know that.
