Is Shohei Ohtani 'The New Babe Ruth' or Something Entirely New?

"Here is passing. Never seen a player like shohei ohtani babe. Ruth was playing against pitchers who were thrown eighty-five miles an hour. Shohei otani is doing this. Against an average fastball of ninety three point five miles per hour average breaking ball. That's unlike anything babe ruth ever saw on top of that he is facing hitters on the pitching mound who were better than they have ever been also and the fact that he has a two point seven nine. Era now in one hundred things which the third best in the american league while at the same time leading all of baseball with forty home runs. It sounds ridiculous because is ridiculous. We have not seen anyone like this in history and the only thing that i hope for greenie is that shohei ohtani can stay healthy because that is all. That's keeping him from being brilliant year after year after year so greatest individual major league baseball season of any player. certainly in our lifetimes. right. I think so. I mean 'cause pitching is a completely different skill than hitting. This isn't i mean to me. It's almost akin to bo jackson playing two different sports. Yes dion sanders like it's. It's almost two different sports to be that good as a pitcher and that goes here.

Breaking Down the Post MLB All-Star Break Stats

"Let's go ahead and start with a look beyond the box score. Those post all-star break numbers still very very high. As of monday's show was a fifty to average street. Twenty four base. four twenty. Two slugging will now. We've added a couple more days of three more days of data to those numbers. Still the two fifty two average on base down a little bit at three twenty one. But slugging up to four thirty five so at three twenty weighted on base average since the all-star break here across the league and that big uptick in slugging percentage is what i'm really focused on here for. Today's show as we know. The strikeout rate is down the stretch outrageous down quite significantly since that spin rate. Crackdown to hold a with the foreign substances. And all of that so guys are putting a lot more balls in play but now not only guys putting more balls in play but we're also seeing better fortunes at high-velocity contact and also more carry average fly ball. Distance is up here in the second. Half from june third. The time that's the second memo was actually sent out. It was a first memo in spring training back in march then. The memo came out june. Third major league baseball said we're going to take this seriously. Then enforcement started on. June twenty-first but any about from june third in july eleventh average fly ball distance three hundred nineteen here in the second. Half three hundred twenty one feet could be something could be nothing could be factors is obviously very hot in the month of july as we know and also to. You talked about this a lot on monday. Show but it's something that's still very relevant here on thursday is that we've seen a lot of below average starting pitchers since the all-star break guys are hurt. We've had several doubleheaders all of that. But also just what i've talked about on the daily article and then also on the shows here in that you've got a lot pitchers that have pitched on seven eight nine ten eleven days rest shohei. Ohtani pitched effectively two weeks worth of rest. It's tough to be sharp in those

"Bring the energy and today. I'm just going to be myself. I turn his take survivor debut. Jeff jeff how are you. I'm sliding in like okay. You all know the rules. Three rounds three prompts. Our contestants will give their takes everyone on this soon. Call within vote but which of those takes is the weakest and thus objected from the island until we get to our finals. In which case our jury will vote on the strongest tank. Ready to go yeah. Space jam two made its debut. Last week is space jam to a good movie. Let's start with you from the covert isolation sweet elijah. Elijah how are you. I'm good in jason. space jam. Two is not a good movie. it's a bad movie for the good bad dichotomy is beside the point. What's important is that space. Jam was disappointing movie. And if i could point to one thing in particular it was how did the nba players in the first one. We got these greek cameos with charles. Barkley muggsy bogues a whole beef or they sought. They're going to therapy. They get their child back at the end of the game. Then here we got just a couple of guys couple couple of women. In one scene it gets scanned into a phone and and that's a good by cgi versions of we don't hear from you for the rest of the movie. I was disappointed from a franchise that elijah disappointed in space jam to. He's been waiting years for it to come out and waiting with baited breath on christmas morning and he's disappointed that that Anti davis had just a more pronounced brow. Was like the thing. Okay jeff now to you space jam to is it a good movie. I personally think. Space jam was not a good movie. Also felt like it was a little unnecessary. I think fist space jam was originally movie. That highlighted the success of michael jordan. Just kinda his star. And i think bringing lebron james into kinda just makes it a lebron replacing michael jordan thing. And that's not really where we're going in terms of basketball right now. So you're not. You're not moved by the fact that michael jordan is in this movie michael jordan. Be talking about up spoiler alert so one more question quickly jeff. Mj or lebron goat into okay. I'm jay over. Lebron caroline reston rest in peace is space jam to a good movie. Can i be honest. John no lie to me why me having housing appear like i feel like that's enough but from reading this wikipedia entry what i was really drawn to the central hashtags boy. "Going to revolutionize the anomaly scale with not. Because i think the thing is get the the the the team will force you to choose. If you're going to be a pinch you gotta hundred mile fastball. You're gonna pay it. You're not going to be hitting a stimulating store goes dancing. You went out position player than you have to come to the bat. Know come to the plate and hit or interview graded hitting and batting and play play. Play position you're going to have to probably gonna have to choose. But i think he was a unique situation and i think him being far blair. He said the only way. I'm coming that you'll allow me to do both. And so they were caught between a rock and a hard place because somebody. If the angels didn't do it someone else was going to allow him to do it. And he's shown because you know you you pitch every field day and he's a d. h. So you basically every day you know. How much would that zappin. And so. But i don't think you're gonna see all of a sudden these guys popping up wanting to be shohei. Otani is unbelievable. Skip the mere fact like he's about the mere fact that we're missing him and babe ruth kill you just. How special does your mania. He has power freakish that we have seen the longtime your job out for a japanese more player. He's already the single season leader and we're at the midway point. Yeah dickey lewis record. I face a thirty one thirty and he's already at thirty three bucks give. I think this was an anomaly. I don't think we're gonna see uprising. Up sprayed guys saying you know what i want bat and i wanna pitch in the major leagues. I don't believe that's going to happen. Okay i believe it should not be under an anomaly. Did you play high school based remember. Okay so i did. I was pretty good. I made all area after my senior year. But what i always saw in my years in high school baseball was the pitchers we faced were often the best hitters that we have to get out because they were the best athletes on the field. They chose to throw because they had the best arm but they also had many times the most power so. That's not an anomaly. And then when i went to vanderbilt we won the sec. All four years. I was there but our archrivals university of tennessee in the best hitter in the sec does for years was a kid. named rick. Honeycutt was also one of the best pitchers so he goes on to the big leagues and makes two all star teams and his the are champ in one thousand nine hundred eighty three because he could really pitch as and dodgers and rangers for a year but he became the dodgers pitching coach for many years up through twenty nineteen. My point is he. He could have done this but he wasn't a what you call a power hitter. Man he could hit for average. He was the sec batting champ. My senior year so my point is when you get to the big leagues are are thinking so prehistoric. They just say you have to choose wrote in japan at eighteen. He decided to play pro baseball in japan for a few years ago right away they're more open minded and they're like okay. We don't have these conventional wisdom that we dug in on it and they said sure because because he's a big he's almost six four and has natural gifted power and he can throw one hundred miles an hour. Why not but they think no. You're going to shortchange yourself one way or the other. What happened to babe ruth. He was great for the boston. Red sox and then when he got traded the yankees. They're like you got to stop. This is the best pitcher in baseball right. And then he became the best hitter of all time through that point right because the yankees said no our box office says we need you to hit the ball out of the park. Which is what he did. I'm just hoping the floodgates reopened for a lot of kids out there who at the high school level are dominating as hitters and pitchers. And i don't know why they can't keep on keep getting if you think about think about football. The best athletes used to play office agreeable a quarterback or there was something they were. They got to you what it'd be able to choose among defense beyond with dr. Dr could play. Both what is like what we really need you. The other side of the we'll give you a few reverses you passes. But i i think that's going to be the cake. You look at tampa. They don't let the pitcher go pants things. A lot of it used to be pitches. Two hundred fifty hundred and sixty pitches and a specialist. I agree right guy. Okay you got coming. From the seventy got closer we gary cole- two hundred twenty pitch a complete game to be commonplace. Yep okay so can't wait until tonight. Because i get to watch this young man pitch and leadoff not allow probably just watch them all over really rupert last night to pete alonso was great to watch so tonight game seven pm eastern on fox and when you watch shohei ohtani. He's just playing with this joy. You can't look away because he's making it look easy. We know it's not thirty. Three home runs. I just can't get enough of him. I cannot get enough of what he's doing. And i cannot wait on display on fox tonight. We're going to get to the cowboys. Now we're gonna see them plenty on fox this season as well but heading into his second year with the cowboys. Mike mccarthy will be eager to put a six and ten season in his rear view mirror dak prescott back under center which will take some added pressure away as bill appear on hard knocks. This will be dallas's third appearance on the hit. Show that former cowboys coach. Dave campo thinks the show is invasive though and in unnecessary hurdle for mccarthy as he looks to right. This shit shannon do agree with campo here. No there's just no excuse for why they are not going to be good to have nothing to do with this. It's not gonna i. It's hard for me to imagine that because their cameras there everyday feeling everything anyway. But all of a sudden it affects your block in tackling throwing your catching. That's not gonna have anything to hard. Not so it's not going to be the reason. The cowboys finished eight nine or nine eight. That won't be the reason and don't make excuses. I understand but you have to understand. Skipped jerry always put this in front of winning. Jerry always wanted more less than lombardi trophies. I a problem with it. I just see from what is so. I'm not here to make no excuses about well. If they don't be vista the happen is because of hard knocks. No twelve to the past have heart ducks team. That approved either improved or equal to win total from the previous year. Sixteenth made the playoffs. We didn't want the bengals the nine and thirteen jazz in two thousand ten to fifteen to twenty twenty rail so it can't be the play off being a.

Pete Alonso Repeats in Record-Breaking Home Run Derby

"When i saw you When we opened up the zoom this morning there a were within orioles cap. You had some oriole pride today. After what trae manzini did. Last night amid that rate homerun derby. Oh my goodness what an evening last night was. I mean i told my boss. P g that This is the high point of the orioles season so had had to wear the hat this morning. I was beaming with pride last night. You know we we. We talk about people being an inspiration in sports. A lot like diaw trey. Manzini really is to beat cancer. First of all i mean. That's inspired himself. But to comeback performed a high level then with the spotlight on them last night you know obviously couldn't edge. Pete alonso out in the derby. But i just have a magnificent performance of it was truly truly a special night especially for orioles fans and it really was so much fun to see how much fun trae was having a wis Shohei ohtani absolute blast. Although he didn't survive the past the first round and pete alonso. and i gotta say taylor. I made my share of lousy picks. You know. I got the angels for example winning the american league west this year which really look stupid at this point but we talked about guests told you i pete. Alonso is going to win. He's the technician. "To actually watch you. Okay i think it helps that the number one face as a doom that needs an interpreter. So you can understand what country. And that's what i'm trying to say all right. So ramona that reeks a little bit of the political argument. If you live in this country and learned the damn language you know it's it. It gets to the heart of people that are immigrants in this country who come here with english. As their second language being yelled at and dictated to that they have to learn english in order to be judged or be successful. I understand why people are upset with steven. What do you think you know. I understand why they're upset. I also think it's you have to remember the context of where what he's talking about in the discussion point. They're like the the graphic on the show is. Is it good for baseball. The show the shohei otani is the face of the league right. I mean that's the graphics. So he chose once. I i don't know what max said there but it was probably the other i mean. That's that's kind of the debate show and he came up with an argument which i think. Is you know one of the callers. Call in pointed out all the the violence against asian asian americans Since the pandemic and all of this. I mean it's a really good point. This is not a time to to to have these kind of insensitive comments. I don't think he meant it in an insensitive way. I think he looked at it from a media. Marketing strategy way like he was just looking at it through a lens and The through that lens and one thing that he said in that quote which i think jumped off the page me. Which is you know stephen. As is a big television star right. He is he is paid to have opinions. He's paid to be person at. Espn yeah and maybe in media. I mean i don't know who else and he's really good at his job and he's really good at being interesting and saying things and he did. He did apologize later. And that's something you should give him credit for two But but i would say like he is Like when you when you have these kind of comments. That is the discussion point. Like he was asked for his opinion there wasn't he didn't come out to try to say something bad about it on and you just went in that direction. But when he said you know if he really wants to be the biggest star that he can be. This is this is his. This is his recommendation. It's almost like an agent telling you. I mean this is a guy stephen. As made himself a big star. And there's a lot of people who've tried to impersonate stephen a. Right i mean. They're they've tried to like take his bombastic style and take his his way of doing things and copy it. I mean we've had a few of them on our network even right. The one of them was once somebody. I helped start going. I was like well. Why are you are you on there. That's not how you are right. I mean it's like people copy that's because it has worked its cut through it. It people want to watch. It is interesting and you may not like everything he says and it may be offensive and and sometimes when you give one hundred opinions and one of them offense i mean it's almost like a batting average right and so i think he went too far on this one. I think what he said was offensive. I i understand why people are upset. But i just i always try to see things in the larger context which was like. This was the prompt. This was the discussion prompt. He got a lot of blowback so he tried to clarify clarify. We'll play that for you coming up. Amil take your phone calls. Let you react. Did it upset you when you heard what stephen said. Eight seven seven seven ten. Espn and michael in here. On wednesday with ramona nigh. So we get that to look forward to gaming games coming up later this hour my game today. Ramon it's your game tomorrow. You gotta come up with a game. Right for more on michael wednesday lindsey thursday so we got all those coming up later in the week. We're talking about stephen smith who is a little hot water because he brought up on. I take this morning that he thinks stephen thinks that otani would maximize his stardom if he would learn how to speak english. And it's hit a nerve with a lot of people reminded you-know-who kavita davidson is who works athletic. Yeah she's worked at espn. She had some interesting takes on this. I'll share them with you now. She said we've gone for major league baseball. Denying players access to the interpreters to condemning a once in a lifetime player for using interpreters to avoid being misconstrued by the media. Any take on shohei ohtani concluding that he's anything but great for baseball is just uninformed. It's hard for many to accept that we live in a global society. But we do. And that's true in sports. Perhaps truer than in any other industry especially in a sport like baseball that has a global presence but does itself no favours in projecting limited and myopic americanise. I think that's a fair point. I think stephen waded into a pretty political issue here. I had i been on with him. What i would have said is well. Roberto clemente is revered so as fernando valenzuela. So as ichiro suzuki so is vladimir guerrero. None of them ever did interviews in english. Yeah and look. He is so compelling as a player he really is like he's he is must see. Tv if i if i'm flipping around and i see the angel game on i'll stay on it for a while. It's like he's the ultimate. Stop what you're doing to me. And i i don't most most people when they give interviews they don't i'm not. I'm not watching the sideline interview. No offense to any sadler reported. But i'm watching to watch the game a much and see what they do on the on the field until like otani to me like. I'm you know baseball's my first love softball. Playing college grew up watching the dodgers. And you know. I was one of those wake up on the morning and watch this week in baseball every weekend. Right right I mean. I love baseball so like anything. The otani to me is such a fascinating player. Just in how good he is Like at both things you know. There's a lotta pitchers who clayton kershaw. It's become a pretty good hitter in his in his career. Dodger pitchers they always make a game of taking batting practice. Who has the highest batting. But nobody's like otani. I mean otani is legitimately one of the best hitters in the game in one of the best pitchers in the game. That's awesome all right so steven a. Then sent out a video trying to clarify his comments. Here's what he said later. After some of the reaction started to roll in my segment on a tiny this morning offers take people in this interpreting. What i'm saying. I'm not talking about the state.

"Eda's for mentioned this week. It's momo in ireland ramona shelburne. Nice enough to sit in for me. I'm gonna growl again. Why not and close. The three o'clock growl and remote. I mentioned i was at a party over the weekend. And the host of this party bought the ufc fight and thank you for supporting our company. Appreciate that so yeah on espn plus so say it again on espn plus wherever you can find those streaming services. Thank you sad. How's that the okay. So the whole under cards. Greg hardy the former teahouse cub. We got knocked out like ten seconds in. But and i'm irish. So i've always kind of rooted for conor mcgregor. Great showman yeah is but order to be a showman to to to run your mouth like he runs his mouth. You have to be able to back it up in the ring. And this was very evident from the beginning that daniel poi- was gonna kick his but he ended up breaking his ankle and looked horrible to that was really hard to watch but i never thought connor was at one point. Connor had him in a headlock. I thought maybe he could choke them out. No i mean. I don't i never got the feeling it was worried. Should these fought three times now and as soon as fighting. He needs stop. That's what but he's not a legitimate fighter anymore. I mean he's still good but to be to fight it this class and this level like one. I don't want to see somebody get hurt like that. That look really painful. And he. he's shown he can. He can take a punch but conor mcgregor in his prime. So i was in new york when he won at the first. Ufc fight that was in madison square garden. I think it was. You've see to twenty s. You lose what count it was. He was such an amazing showman and he won. It was just a great fight to like when he would win. It was the little like ronda. Rousey like she used to win fifteen seconds. She was awesome And connor would come out and he would you know he was just pinpoint in his marksmanship. Right like you would just he. His striking was just like he'd be dancing around that all of a sudden he would see a little opening in poon. Getting right in fa-. I mean he was just fantastic to watch and he could talk as much as you wanted because he would win. But you know he's he's kinda done with that like. I don't think you have a very long shelf life in the ufc usually It's a really hard sport. The the four inch clubs like man. People get really messed up. You get messed up longtime if yeah and i got the impression he couldn't fight back in certain points and like the broken ankle was like hard to watch like you know he did the fight with floyd and he's done some exhibition e kind of things. He's made a lot of money he doesn't need to keep doing this. And and i would say this like somebody who chronicled. Ronda rousey ends end of her career. Pretty free closely I don't know if you how about you follow her now. She's off raising cattle and stuff on browse acres. Right like they're they're having their he's about to. She's she's very pregnant right now very pregnant with her first child and good for her man. She always used to say like when i'm done i'm done. I'm get out i'm going to go live on a chicken ranch and you know do farmer things. And that's what she's doing like she's happy. She's about to have a kid she's doing that. She's still kind of online a little bit with these youtube videos. But i would watch her and she had so many injuries like she she. Her knees were basically bone on bone. she got knocked out on the ring. Yeah and then. She went and did wrestling. And you know what's what about wrestling. She can come back and be a wrestler. She totally not get hurt doing that. Maybe a little bit but you know at some point you kind of say how. How long do you want to get punched in the face like that money. He doesn't fight anymore all right. So the major league baseball homerun derby is tonight. This really is a forty eight hour. Coronation of shohei ohtani as the biggest attraction the game otani place in the angels has been unbelievable. He leads the major leagues in home runs. They are going to basically use the all star game tomorrow night to show him off tonight. As the number one seed in the homerun derby this is in coors field in colorado. The last time the all star game was of course field mason. And i went to it. And you're the hairston their balls out of the park. He's probably gonna put on a big show tonight and even if he doesn't people be anxious to trevor story. By the way. I think trevor story is gonna win. Because he's the hometown guy he's the he's the colorado rockies guys in homerun derby right. Well there's a bunch of of like kind of cool stories that are that are gray. Mancini will is my favorite one. Yeah trey man. Seaney almost died last year. He basically was he was playing for the orioles and his he wasn't feeling great and he had his blood tested in his iron was really low and they tested him again and it was even lower and they'd be determined to a series of tests that he had a colon cancer stage. Three two wasn't right and he basically had to go through. Full chemo radiation. All of it. And he worked his way back. He missed all of last season. And this season he's been tearing the cover up the ball and tonight as in the homerun derby. So here's who's in it. Shohei ohtani joey. Gallo last year's winner pete alonzo trevor. Story juan soto matt olsen from the as trae mancini in salvador perez from the from the royals in otani will be the the main reason people tune in. You can listen to it on our sister station. Amil evan ten you can watch it on. Espn and then tomorrow night. We got the game. Otani is gonna hit leadoff and start as the starting pitcher for the american league and because he is the biggest drawn the game. He's being talked about all over on a lot of the debate. Shows in the morning and This morning stephen. Smith said something that has gotten him in a little hot water. I gave this kind of disclaimer earlier but for people. Who don't know. I've done stephen for twenty years. We did a radio show at another network together. I really like them. So i'm a little biased at this but i understand why people are upset with him. Here's what stephen said about otani this morning on. I take crab tool.

"Gsm. see podcast network. I'm hosts kevin mahalick appreciate you guys tuning in so some history was made out there on the diamonds in the past couple of days. More than shohei ohtani breaking the record for most home runs in the season by japanese-born player. We had chad green of the new york yankees complete in immaculate inning. This past week. And what's an immaculate inning. Well it's three strike outs in the inning on just nine pitches. So green became the third immaculate inning. So far during the twenty twenty one season honestly. This has happened a bit more than i thought it would. Over the course of major league baseball. I mean there's been a ton of them but recently i wanted to discuss with you guys. You know the more recent ones that have taken place. Chad green was the second one for the yankees. So far this season this one happened on july. Fourth against the mets chad. Green against michael. Conforto jeff mcneil and jonathan vr. Who went down with three strikeouts on nine pitches. Michael king was able to complete this for the yankees back on june fourth against the red sox. I remember talking to you guys vow. This was the first one ever in the yankees. Red sox rivalry that took place. You had hunter renfro. Marlin gonzales and christian vasquez go down in that particular inning but we also had one by kyle finnegan of the nationals. On may fifth twenty twenty one against the atlanta braves austin riley. Dance be swanson. And william contraire s where the victims and that particular inning now in immaculate inning only happened to once in the twenty twenty season now this season was only sixty games along so obviously a lot less of an opportunity but three so far this year and about eighty two games as a lot more than one in just sixty but zac. Police acted it on september. Eighteenth twenty twenty against the tigers jorges. Hey bonifazio nico good german austin roe. Mine went down for the tigers in twenty nineteen. This happened quite often. Actually there were ton back. In twenty nineteen the most recent one was will harris of the astros in september against the angels. You had chris martin of the braves in september against the phillies cesar hernandez jay. Bruce logan morrison went down in that particular inning kevin gaza and completed one when he was with the cincinnati reds the ninth inning against the cardinals. Yaro muna's dexter fowler. And tommy edmund. You had stephen strasburg in twenty nineteen against the marlins. Chris sale for the red sox in june of twenty nineteen against the royals. You also had chris sale do it in may eighth of twenty nineteen so chris sale did it twice back during the twenty nineteen season. This time it was against the orioles thomas Known for the blue jays in april of twenty nineteen against the race. And then josh. Hater of the brewers did it in twenty nineteen of the cardinals so very common back in twenty nineteen. It only happened four times in twenty eighteen zach. Ross cup for the dodgers germain marquee for the rockies max scherzer for the nationals kevin guzman with the orioles at this particular time also did it. So he's done in multiple times in his career so the immaculate inning happens more often than you would think dating all the way back to eighteen eighty nine. It happened once in eighty nine once in nineteen hundred two once in nineteen fourteen once in nineteen twenty one twenty three twenty four twice in twenty eight not again until three fifty six fifty nine sixty two so it certainly becoming more common in today's game than it was back in the day but there's a list of them out there online if you wanna see ultimately who has them for your squad and checking out but chad green. The most recent one with three strikeouts nine pitches having himselves in immaculate inning to make history for the yankees just jumping around news notes for major league baseball here mets ace jacob degrom says he will skip the all star game. He said quote. I've thought about it and obviously being named to an all star team is a great honor. But i'm just going to take that time and enjoy with my family. Whether i pitched sunday or not and get healthy for the second half. It was kind of up in the air. Whether or not i go and then thinking about it. I think it's best for me and this team for me to not go and throw and rest for the second half and quote to gram of course leads the war here for twenty twenty one with a one point zero eight. Era leads the majors with one hundred. Forty six strikeouts despite only throw in ninety two innings. So again he's been very good for the mets he's dealt with some injuries and he's going to sit it out and just take time to get healthy. So who's going to replace degrom for the all star game. I talked to you guys. About some snubs earlier you got peralta potentially sherzer potentially a couple of other guys bueller and walker could potentially start so ultimately i think max scherzer is going to get the nod over freddie peralta and end up making his eighth consecutive all star appearance here during the twenty twenty one season. But now i wanted to talk to you guys about some rookie. Who have been hot here over the past couple of weeks. Some names you guys may not have heard of or heard about just quite yet but who are starting to make a name for themselves and i is alex minoa a right handed pitcher for the blue jays. He's there number five ranked overall prospect number ninety on major league. Baseball's top one hundred. He's only made two starts so far but he's been absolutely dominant. He hasn't allowed in earned. Run in either of those outings over the course of thirteen innings. He's also struck out sixteen and also walked three so again he struck out ten tampa bay rays in a club record seven in a row at one point. He didn't allow a hit until the sixth inning. And that particular outing. He was eleventh overall. Pick in twenty nineteen and man. He has been so good through these first two starts and his curve ball is one of the filthiest pitches in all of baseball already. If you guys haven't seen pitching in. John twitter just type in his name. And you're going to see some filthy swing and misses against his breaking ball and i think he's a name. We're going to be here in for quite some time as he's only scratching the surface of his potential there in toronto. Y'all hoes. Oh have eric hoss catcher outfielder for the tigers now again they're rebuilding so there's going to be a lot opportunities in this guy is a little bit atypical. Righties at twenty eight year old rookie. He hit three twenty three over the past. Nine games for the tigers with four home runs. He had two of them last saturday and a six. Rbi performance against the white sox and this leads all rookies over the past. Two weeks is o. P. s. has gone from eight..

"I think dow right now you you didn't because well because you lead with saying shohei otani is doing we haven't seen since babe ruth gate so we can like what he's doing his little league stuff to us one continuous. Doug do you think he's going to be a hitter pitchers entire career. Yes you know you don't. There's no way. Because i just don't think at some point you don't wanna risk this guy having some sort of arm injury. He's already had an arm injury a couple of times but he had an injury. You might say this guy needs to be a hitter. Babe ruth did it for five years with the red sox and then he decided disguise too good of a hitter not to have them in the lineup. Every day to play for you and that's what's going to happen all tiny so while it's a it's a nice circus act now and people are marveled at it. It's not something that i believe can be sustained. Okay but we're not arguing whether or not how long you sustain it okay. What the point is what he's doing. We haven't seen since babe ruth in in a league. Where like if we took out the steroid. We took out the steroid era right now. He's on he's right on pace for barris which which we haven't frankly seen since. They took steroids out of baseball. So he's his. Opie is one point five four at three point five war like dudes stud hitting the baseball and he's maybe not a top ten pitcher but in the top twenty top twenty five like that's a little league stuff dominated the third man in your rotation. Let's just be honest. i mean. I'm not coming out. Tommy john surgery. I'm not getting on the ripple at all so i don't want it to come off like what you're saying. The okay i think he has the stuff to potentially get back to being an ace. But you're trying to monitor the factories coming off. Tommy john surgery. He was throwing like an ace. They lost some velocity. But the point is did you see that she's a shoulder come out of his come off his body this year. You mentioned you mentioned babe ruth and then you like well then then ty cobb and what he's doing to start the season and ted williams no one saying for not is not an incredible player and he's not he's not starting his career at a level which we haven't seen the longtime nor do we think suddenly he's gonna fade away like he steals basis he hits for average he hits for power. He has panache. She has like all that stuff is great. Shohei ohtani does basically the same thing only. He's starting pitcher in major league baseball on a damn good one so i don't really see the your again. This is one of those. It's not a terrible argument. Except for the fact that i don't think anybody in the sport would actually make the argument except for me. I think i shot down shutting me down with your argument. That's i think that if you were really if you pull most general managers they would take tat tease. I really believe that shohei is what he's doing is not sustainable. So long term is what he is. What he's doing is a hitter. Sustainable just that is. But they still doesn't make him a better hitter than than tat. Tattoos says twenty seven home runs and has been injured twice. This year has been out of the lot of twenty seven home runs. Okay so my point is he's having a better year. Despite not leading the league in home runs and otani has four home..

Shohei Ohtani: Japan’s Babe Ruth

"We first met shohei ohtani. He was the most captivating player in baseball. Who had yet to take his first swing or for that matter. His first pit in a major league game a prodigious hitter an fearsome pitcher from japan otani is now making a run for. Mvp and the majors not since v has a sports. Seen anything like what this batting leadoff otani hit a home. Run on the first pitch of the game. Then he threw eight shutout innings striking out ten batters with the hundred mile. An hour fastball. That's a comic book character. Nobody does does that.

"I feel like a run into nonsense and it's heartbreaking. I feel like you know, you have a friend that you you love them but your interests diverge and you go different paths in life and not grow apart and like you miss that person, but even if you hang out with that person, now it's not going to be the same as it used to be because they've changed and you've changed. That's how I feel about Major League Baseball. Like I said, it's it's not what I want it to be, and I'm a different person and I don't stand for nonsense and tolerating bull crap. I just can't, I can't do it. I can't do the unwritten rules. I do a lot of the weird stuff that you can't celebrate. You can't enjoy a home run by hate that stuff and to me, I got a lot of entertainment options available to me. I would rather watch wistfully, like football league's the American wiffle Association. That's my friends. Do it up. North north of Seattle. It's really fun. I enjoy it so much and it's fun. It's not, it's not a drag. There's no discouraging home runs. There's no weird rules that aren't actually in the rule book because if it wasn't a robot, could be embarrassing. And that that to me, that that's my frustration with major league baseball. Now, how about a good thing? How about? I want to say something positive about Major League Baseball? I think it's possible especially with the audience of this show and this podcast we just mainly football some racing fans cuz I like I got a weird people love football and former the one it's a weird group of humans that follow the show like very opposite people that somehow come together. Got a lot of Europeans. Listen to this show to Germany, what's up? Okay now so if you don't know a lot about baseball you might not know about this. I want to tell you about Shuhei. Sorry shohei Shuhei I knew a guy named Shuhei. Who spelled his name. Exactly like shohei ohtani spells his name I knew him at Shuhei. He went by that all through elementary school but this guy's name is shohei shohei. Ohtani He's currently dominating two very, very different parts of baseball pitching and batting and he plays on an American League team, the LA Angels, and get that in the American League pitchers. Do not have to bet because pitchers historically are bad at batting in the National League. They have to bat and it's kind of just a wasted, a bad almost every game. Now case you get a picture of hit something or home round or whatever, but in the American League you don't have pitchers bat you have designated hitters who are better at batting. And usually there like an old dude who can't run very well but you can still hit for power or something. Like there's a reason why your designated hitter and not playing second base. It's cuz you probably have a debate in school but you can still hit a baseball. And pictures traditionally partially because, you know, if you're a pitcher you're so specialized and you're so focused on this. One thing, you're always training for pitching ain't trading for batting and hitting home runs and stuff. So.

"The dodgers have a big night with a seven three win in the first four games against the cubs. We have the dodgers and the cubs on Sunday night. Baseball Iraqis have been rolling. They played the Padres, and Charlie Blackmon got it done. Ditch to Blackman and hit to center again. We'll Moyer chasing it back to the. News. Back at bats for Charlie black-wing I one to straightaway center this to left center field. It was a long whom on again for Charlie seventy four Rockies. Eight fifty KOA, the final score, there was nine to six Colorado, the White Sox the Yankees in Chicago. They were tied four all bottom of the seventh inning. This is what happened and the three to Laurie. Swing along the right field. This has got a chance. Tag fag down the fireworks saturate five to four Garcia's four light it up and out of out to be no curveball fi down the middle Lael regard, SIA leaned, all over that one, and that home run would be the difference at former Darren Jackson on WGN the angels, and the raise in the Trump and Shohei Ohtani had himself a day. So the county, even here's the one on chill. Hey, and he swings in drives at ball, keeping a left centerfield applause, carrying out by the wall out there, and that one is outta here. Shohei Ohtani, three run blast. Here in the very first inning angels, have a three nothing lead. Showtime Shohei Ohtani leading things up for the angels here to start things off in the third inning and banks ball off the wall out in left center field. And he will slide into second base to start this inning off with a leadoff double are already in the pits. That's a liner out of the reach of the first baseman d'arno that when will go all the way down in the corner. Otani is going to have a chance for its ripple. He's headed to third, and he is going to get it easily so Shohei Otani, you kinda awkwardly went into third base scanner kind of catches balance keep his foot on the bags. The next catch. There's a shot in a right center. It's going to drop in for a base. It Otani make a turn. And stop at first base in. He is just tip for the cycle. He did it on to strike pants Shohei Ohtani. The first Japanese-born flair to. Ever hit for the cycle in a major league game. How about that? How about that, Terry? Smith angels radio. AM eight thirty. And so back in Bristol guys, I tell you, what, when I saw this today didn't mention that Otani was the first player from Japan to do this. I would've guessed that each row at some point have done it. What about you guys one would guess? Yes BUSTER, but. Not to not to rain on Shohei parade. Oh, now, let me don't even go there. You don't eat and go there. But go ahead. You're going to diminish him. Go ahead. I'm in the camp that four home runs is better than the cycle, two doubles triple and a home run better than the cycle to triple double a homerun better than the cycle, the cycle just seems like such an arbitrary thing like congratulations, great day. Good game. But like to go down in the record books, like at some sort of huge accomplishment. It's kind of like wearing fifty points in the NBA now really doesn't mean as much as he used to. 'cause it just happened so often. Now, I would agree with that. I'd say this Josh been hanging out with booth way too much.
