"I am very new school in that regard. I don't think they drastically improve your chances of scoring in an inning. I i don't think it makes a lot of sense to give away outs. I detest especially position players. I get it when he got a pitcher who can swing the bat. He comes up less than two outs. Guy first base fine but a position players not swinging the bat and instead laying down a sacrifice bunt for the most part absolutely not but today shogo akiyama laid down a sacrifice bunt with two on and nobody out in the seventh-inning today and i was here for it. First of all shogo. Ocoee is not good offensively. second of all. I'm trying to avoid a double play third of all. I can't count on a hit to get the run in if i can get a guy to third base for less than two outs. Maybe the next guy up as dribble cabrera can get about of the outfield. That is exactly what he did. He does not yet have a hit for the reds but he has one of the season's most important sacrifice flies. He had a sacrifice fly. He drove in the go ahead run and the reds win the ball game one. Nothing today in pittsburgh to avoid a sweep. They have gained a half game on saint louis. They have gained a half game on san diego. Who's playing right now. How how do you get that talented. That girl's eleven she has. She's done more at eleven that i've done like in my whole life and she's gotten like as she's gotten bigger and bigger like is it's gotten out there like people from all over like do videos back and forth with her and like the sender stuff and she's famous. "Last night the reds flail away against a lefty and not look very good and doing so for the most part lefties have been this team's kryptonite all season long last night. It was john lester and it wasn't vintage two thousand sixteen john lester until last night. So there's a couple of different issues here number one. whether or not it's a you haniya suarez or asdrubal. Cabrera gotta start getting some production from third base number two. It is very fair very fair to look at. What does team did around the deadline and wonder wouldn't have made a little bit more sense to address. What has been a bit of a weakness. Which is this team's performance teams production against lefties going to be a lot of lefties between now and the end of the year. They've lost three straight game the reds have. I'm not. I'm not worried worried in concern to me or different things and i know we're kind of talking semantics here. Worry is panic concern is. I'm keeping an eye on this. Because it may be troublesome. We talked about this a little bit yesterday. I have seen we have all seen. What can happen to this team when it goes through a massive prolonged offensive downfall. It's called most of the two thousand twenty season but the good news for last year. Is those last three weeks. Because of trevor. Bauer and louise castio and shogo akiyama. They did enough down that stretch to get to the post season but for about a five or six weeks stretch. This team was awful. Offensively my hopes for the reds coming into this season were based around this team. Simply being better than it was in the micro season last year and offensively that has been the case but good offensive team. Still go through collective slumps. Jesse winker is not active right now. The jonathan india is is the guy that they brought up this year they and they also have shogo akiyama who a good outfielder forum is just right now with tyler. Knick win and then center tyler. Aikman's a great defensive center fielder allocates. It's as simple as that for the American league cy young award or not cy young award the american league rookie of the year. The award was predicted to go to randy arose. Raina i mean. He was the number one prospect in all of baseball. He got off to really slow start and who didn't get off to a slow start. Els all these garcia at the at a texas. I think he has a pretty much locked up. And i think i mean like he could hit thirty home runs this year. He's i mean but he is a twenty eight year old rookie. So he's like right in his prime. You could make an argument. For like casey mayes or luis garcia at a houston. Honestly like i would probably go with luis garcia but i do think that all these garcia kinda has locked up as of right now randi arena a little bit of dark horse out in the al accu battle a great a great option as well but in the grand scheme of things. I don't really think that it's much of a real real race in the american league wild-card much like i don't think it's any kind of erase. Really four. Eighty buddy to win in the al other shohei otani in that at the i mean itani has elite league in home runs and he's also their number one starter. It feels like he's playing. "Being whole also they're still forty-nine games remaining. I feel comfortable in saying this. I certainly hope i'm wrong. Injuries will affect this team again. As of now there is healthy as they've been maybe all year long since zealous. Working his way back antonio's working his way back. But beyond those guys. This team as of this moment appears to be in pretty good shape from a health perspective. They still have a significant chunk of games to overcome right now. Three and a half against san diego not insurmountable right now six against milwaukee not insurmountable but difficult the time to make up ground. You could talk about. What the schedule's now. Going to get a little tougher at least for the next week because the pirates are in the rear view mirror. The minnesota twins are in the rear view mirror. The cubs come here Next week and the cubs are awful but still all right so the schedule eases up take care of business against bad teams and hold her own against the ones that are okay and there's some validity to that at the same time i think you have to strike while you're healthy because who knows when you're not going to be chances are you won't be healthy over the course of the final forty nine games of the season to the extent that you would like a huge stretch for this team because they do have all their guys like tonight we're wondering where's moves dacas and whereas winker and extensively one guy who's replacing him aristide aquino another guy who's effectively replacing him as shogo akiyama one dude you brought over for twenty one or the other guy had a record setting homerun month. This year is now gonna be probably coming off your bench on a pretty regular basis. Certainly against righties indians are running a lefty out there tonight. So you're going to get some gino from the dimension. There are getting at the top of the order with jonathan india. Figure this team last year and how homer dependent they were. This can obviously still hit the long ball but they're not homered dependent. Jonathan india has solved. What has been pretty much. A three decade quest for a leadoff hitter you have players and winker and cast janos who are having career years. You were having joey votto. Enjoy a resurgence kyle. I think we've kind of put behind us. The notion that lewis castio is having a down year. He had a bad two months. He's been awesome since wade miley is as reliable as they come. Time only had a really good big start yesterday to to run seven innings. This guy who struggled at home at times this year nice bounce back start albeit against a bad team. Then there's a lot of good years. I just like watching vladimir gutierrez pitch somebody who just seems to get how to pitch and i think specifically in this day and age. That's saying something. Think of what. He's done for a spot on the team. That was a huge question. Mark coming into the season certainly wants. The season began and definitely when they started to lose sonny grave for a little while or not. Get what we were looking for from the waist castio didn't have michael lorenzen and try. The jeff hoffman experiment. But it didn't work out. let them. you're good air. Gets the ball right now. You feel pretty good also feel pretty good about what's going to happen when that bullpen door flings open and that to me might be the biggest difference right now. Two very quiet innings from reds relievers. Yesterday and to me the difference is simply this from where the reds are now to where they were just maybe two weeks ago. Not every relief appearances going to end. Well not everybody in this. Bullpen is going to be immune to bad outings. There are probably still going to be occasional bullpen implosion. I hate to say that but what you're getting is a degree of comfort and reliability that bullpen door flings open. The guy who comes out. I think now you could feel better about most of the options. Now of pretty established major league relief pitchers some of them have to perform better than they have so far this year. You're being fair if you're wondering about the club's overall health and how it might impact the relief corps but for the most part right now when a guy gets up and throws and you guys gonna come in. I think you feel pretty comfortable. What's that gonna add up to. Does it mean the reds are going to chase or catch. The milwaukee brewers. I feel better about the idea that they will today. I did coming into the weekend but to me right now with fifty games to go. I'm more into the composition of the team. The makeup of the club a team that most of the season we've held in contrast to how people feel about ownership and we've talked about it's likeability and we've talked about resilience and we've talked about offensively. How much better. They are this year as opposed to last year. All of those things are true. I see a team. The top to bottom right now is pretty. Damn good doesn't have a lot of holes has some depth and there's still going to get some guys back and they still could bring up some players who can make a difference in september. How how long is that gonna last. You can't predict injuries. Is this team going to be good enough to get the ninety. One wins gets a ninety two wins. I feel better about that now than i have at any point this year. I don't know what there is to not like about this team. At this moment we've spent a lot of the year talking about what they're not getting it. Third base might miss dacas returned. We spent a lot of time early in the season wondering about joey. Votto complaining about joey votto joey votto enjoying a find season. We wondered often during the season. What can last year's offense tell us about this year's offense we spent a lotta time worrying about what they may or may not get from shortstop would they may or may not get from rookies. Jonathan india looks like a guy who is going to do anything but hit a rookie. There right now is very little to not like whether it be about the composition of the club the deployment of players. How david is using guys. It might not like the fact that he's gonna play tonight but you're at least using him against the kind of pitcher that you would expect david bell to use u. juarez against. There is not a lot too not really really like about this club and for a living. I knit pick. I think as fans we all nit-pick and even if you go well i'd like to see a little bit more out of centerfield. The tyler naked thing dried up a little bit. I wish i was shogo. Akiyama was a guy that you count on to to do a little bit more. Offensively the absence of castanos pave the way for guys like keno and maybe even knock yokoyama to show what they could do. Neither really took advantage on under the umbrella of things that could be fixed between now and the end of the year. What is there. There's not a lot to tell me if there is at five point. You can get too caught up in. You know beating a bad team and the pirates but again what we wanted this team to do. I think what most of us wanted this team to do around. It sounds absurd to even suggest they should have. We wanted this team. We wanted this front office to give this bunch a shot to what extent they did. We can argue we debate. We can wonder even after the fact but we want this team to be given a chance because the schedule was going to ease up drastically because there was going to be a lot of pirates cubs and depleted washington nationals and miami. "I didn't have a problem with then almost ten years later. I still don't have a problem with even though it really didn't work out to the extent that we would like and look it would have been really nice as we got to the middle of the decade to have some of those guys threads traded away. I have very little issues with overpayment. There is a a huge huge difference. I said this yesterday so. Pardon me for the redundancy if you were here but there's a huge huge difference between overpayment and doing something that just completely destroys you financially. We will all overpay for things at times. But there's a difference between overpaying. Maybe paying more for something than it's actually worth and destroying your financial portfolio killing yourself economically a huge difference between those two things overpaid for a trip to milwaukee. Pay more money than i would have liked number. One couldn't do a baseball road trip last year number two desperately desperately in need of kind of a guys trip if you will had a chance to do some things that ordinarily don't do overpaid i. Frankly i- overpaid it was worth doing. Overpayment doesn't mean that now my kid can't eat. It doesn't mean that. I can't make my house payment. It doesn't mean that. I got a sleep on on a park bench somewhere. So this idea that we're going to be reluctant to overpay. If you have a shot. And i don't know what overpayment looks like again who knows what other teams want from the reds. Who knows who. The reds are shopping. Who knows who. The reds are completely unwilling to trade. None of us really know these things. We'll get a firmer picture. This maybe right. Before july thirtieth. But we were all on board with overpaying cash for mike moustakas why we not be on board with overpaying in terms of assets to get somebody who can push this team over the top or at least help push this team over the top and if you do go for it and you win i gotta be honest with you. I don't care about who they traded away and if you go for it and it makes sense to go for it because your team's got a shot and you go all in and you overpay and the guys you give up end up being decent elsewhere. And then he's taken the ball every fifth day and he's a fine starting pitcher his numbers. When you look at the era might not necessarily. Wow you but he's averaging well more than a strikeout per inning and he's done it despite having to miss extensive time because of injury last season or the year before he's just twenty six years old. It feels like in many respects. He's just getting started. Shogo akiyama different type of player. You get him and it does feel like. He spent his best seasons in japan and there have been players like that before who came from asia and yet their best years occurred overseas. That doesn't appear to be the case with this guy. This dude is just twenty six years old and just getting started now. He's not on a very good team. The angels are a game above five hundred nine games out of first place and yes. "They took i mean they signed iglesias to a three year contract on a clip friendly supposedly contract and then they traded him when they were going to get the best value year out of him the last year of his contract right and they traded him or nothing for dude who didn't even make the team and now we're sitting here looking at this volt and i mean how much different this team with. Look if we had a glazed yes at the back of the bullpen. And we just all these other guys up another inning and less leverage situations. I think bob castellini almost made a declaration with trade that i cannot compete as an owner in the national league. And if that's the case. Sell your team. If you're going to be you could. You can't do it both ways. You cannot be the we're going to win championship baseball. We're going to bring championship baseball to cincinnati. You can't be that owner and then make these acknowledgements that i can't win. You can't do both if you if you're going to be the we are going to bring championship baseball to cincinnati guys away. You can calculate it may calculated moves where you trade assets and get big returns teams. Do that all the time. You can't give guys away and by the way as you were talking. I was thinking about aroldis chapman who they traded away and they completely missed the market.
