Quiet cooking shows all day long where they just bring in chefs like i saw shirley from top chef and she came on and she was like she she was making. I forget what she was making. I think maybe some sort of soup but she went and grabbed the hot pot with their fingers. And i don't worry like you can't do this at home. But i'm a chef so i don't have any fingertips anymore and you're just like holding blazingly hot cheery typical shirley shirley so i watched that. Yeah that's a good way to describe it. Just really chill people. Because sometimes they're like. Hey you know what this guy wants yesterday said. Hey i just moved la. So i'm just trying to eat a little healthier. Mac and cheese with god like network so sometimes i have to say i recently did watch something on taste. Made a where. It was like the chef that brought on for this episode. Was i think like irish or doing some sort of like take on irish. I don't know he made Irish nachos which was basically like mashed potato. It was a weird potato. I i don't. I can't even remember what it was but it was so it didn't look like it didn't look look at worked and it wasn't like it wasn't like oh nachos be tortilla chips. It was saying those ingredients do not play together. What are you doing sir. And so then to come onto top chef. Thank thank god. I needed this in my life because after top chef last season which was fantastic. I was able to hold myself over with patas fed the natia but that was only like six episodes..

I think i brought her brought her up once before. When we talked about softness but my black woman self care this week is co opt in because shirley posted. And i would like to read it verbatim. Because i don't wanna get nath infect up my prayer as i cook i pray that instead of looking toward white people to validate our humanity or set a baseline for how we treat ourselves that we just treat ourselves as the royalty that we are regardless of what in how others treat themselves. I pray that. I validate my own humanity by the action of how i care for my own. Human body i pray. We don't need anyone to tell us. We matter so that we can believe we matter. I pray that. I released the compulsion of trying to make sense of white psychosis and instead keep redirecting to my own healing process a shea so i want to co op. That as my black women self care this week borrow it. Wafting is so negative. oh is it borrowed Like be inspired spur. You gave her credit like okay. You right co-opting them saying say her name i am i would like to borrow. I would like to you. Yes i would like to draw inspiration from. Yes i would like to quote how i would like to give credit to but yes i love. No no not not at all. And i think that that was a universal idea right. I refuse to be a part of the problem. I refuse to be a part of that. You're not gonna make me feel way about myself pirie. I'm love myself. I know who i am. And i'm not looking to government. And i'm not looking to union or force or a group of people. Tell me that i matter. I'm gonna matter to me. And i'm gonna do what i need to do to make sure that matter to me and i take care of myself so i thought that was a beautiful sentiment and i wanted to share it for anybody else who does not want to co opt yet. My number ten is the apartment. Okay DVD myself a little bit a little bit, even incorporated more old movies more classics. Yes, late, as of late into your list could right yeah, so I I! Love the apartment at. One Best Picture Shirley Shirley Maclean was robbed I love everything Jack Lemmon does every and actually those are my two favorites. My favorite scenes I know. We're supposed to do only one, but I did to here I love the office party scene. The was a Christmas party rate. Yes I. Love The Jack Lemmon, surely cleaning that and I also love the opening. Where they wake him up. Yeah, that's where you kind of find that what he does. He pens out his house and I. Just Jack Lemmon so-so funny in those scenes. He's so great Frederick. Murray is good in it, but he's yeah, he's gone, he said. Not Comedy like you see Fred macmurray. Billy Wilder's best and you will see billy while they're later on my list. My number nine is super bad. My favorite scene Super Bad Emma Stone's introduction. Of course it is though, but I'll do. I'll jokes aside I probably if we ever do this list again somehow I probably would. More, watching super bad and washing the apartment would probably switch that up for me because I think, the apartment is obviously a one best picture from front to back. It's a great film. I think with super. Bad anything with Seth. Rogan for me and Bill Hader and make Lovin I. don't I'm not entertained by that? At all I think the stuff in the parking. Lot is a little rough for me. When like when the police car explodes, but my favorite scene all jokes, aside I do like where we're fogel shows off his fake ID for the first time having think to Elias and where they actually go shopping for the for the beer and. And comparing OPPO Kahane's. Aladdin that he looks like Aladdin. It's Hilarious I think all that stuff. The whole scene is hilarious. Number Eight is forty year old virgin. I am so grateful for the forty year over. Because of this, we did not succeed. We would not have nine as of the office. So because of that gets the number eight slot slot alone. The movies just from beginning hilarious from beginning to end favorite scene in that movie is the first poker game where he compares boobs to sandbags. and. I think it's hilarious. My number seven the birdcage. Every time I watch this movie I. Love Him more. I'll give Jenny full credit on that because she is the one that I introducing the birdcage and it is. hilariously actually watched the other day the original. French la casual full goddess funny. Funny, but it's French. Funny, so it's different funny. It's not Nathan Lane does. Not Robin, will I it follows the birdcage. Follow the original story really well, and so it was a good, and it's on criterion, so if anyone wants to check it out, it's very very good, and then my favorite scene and the birdcage while there's so many. "shirley shirley" Discussed on Popcorn with Peter Travers

"Hi everybody I M Peter Travers. This is popcorn where we tell you what's happening at the movies and people. There's a movie now called the invisible man that you have to stop everything and see right now. Well not right now. You're going to listen to us. Talk for a few minutes but it is so good. And it's one of the best performances ever given by my guest Elisabeth Moss. So welcome you. Well it's easy when it's true it is. Did you have a good feeling when it was done and you looked at it? Did you say all this torture? They put me was worth it basically. Yeah Yeah I watched a An earlier cut off the film In in screening room in New York by myself and I was it was definitely one of those moments where I was like like a worked. Because when you're making a film like this it's not it's not a gigantic budget. It's not like you know effects but there's effects elements and so you're never quite sure what it's going to turn out to be. It's a crazy story. Talk a little bit about it. Because what's amazing to me. Is THE INVISIBLE? Man Really isn't about the interesting for man it's about someone. He's victimized and that flip of the focus. Yeah has changed everything that was. Yeah well that was all Leon owe them I believe the story goes that they asked him. What would you do with the invisible man? They sort of brought him the property and he just off even the top of his head was like I think I would tell it from the perspective of the victim. And that's the movie that we have today so it was. It was his idea completely. I'd never seen a movie like this before where the villain is actually talks masculinity. Yeah and yeah and the reverberations that come from that. I don't want to be in spoiler territory make if people are angry and make sense. No just describe this character you play. Yeah I play A woman named Cecilia. Who we see at the beginning of the foam is seems to be escaping a house and a man and then we find out that she's actually getting out of an credibly. Abusive relationship Her husband Boyfriend Ends UP COMMITTING SUICIDE. But she continues to believe that she's being terrorized by him and Everyone thinks she's crazy. No one believes her and then and then and then the optics engineer. Yes so he's somebody that would know about what this yes. Yes but what's fascinating about it that I think we can talk about it and women go through this constant. Yeah is that when they feel that? They've been abused everybody's saying I need evidence short. I need to see it. So if it's an invisible entertain YEP which could be real in the movie or could be sometimes what a woman who's been abused goes through absolutely how that doesn't ever leave your head exactly. That's exactly right Peter. That's we're always take some popcorn and I no. You're exactly right I mean it's it's it's two fold. It's not only an analogy for gas lighting and for a woman not being believed but it's also a metaphor for how hard it is to let go of that toxic relationship and the trauma that still exists In a man or a woman as they carry that around. And you can't just oh well I'm out of it now. Everything's GONNA BE FINE. You know there's some damage that's been done and We definitely deal with that in a in you know a metaphorical way and the movie in terms of this society that we're in now it's isn't really speaking to it directly. Yeah guys of horror film. Absolutely I think all great horror films are like that though you know they all have a metaphorical kind of thing going for them in the shining. There's like nine million ideas of what that movie actually means Exorcist or even a movie like You know gravity or something then genre realm. It tends to have a an idea. That's bigger than just the bells and whistles around it. I think it's a way of making a film like this. John Ritter Foam really speak to something deeper and and and be much more interesting. And it is. It's a month teaser. But at the same time it is a horror film. I invasion of the body snatchers. The first one that was done in the fifties on it was basically sub. Textually about McCarthy is right and people being in America turning into such conformance they would go along with what anybody would say absolutely. It's so much about women being believed yep being hurt and being believe yeah which is it. Yeah it's really it's really interesting you're up. No you're absolutely right. I mean for me. It's one of those ideas. Your when I when I read the script kind of like I wish I had thought of this. Like this is so so great and it's so relevant almost seems so obvious. Now you know well. I don't think it's obvious because we're just getting to the point. Where recognized able to do this a decade ago. I think the sense of invisibility is that means. There's something else spiritual or something in our heads that Honda's that's not what were your favorite horror films like I loved the shining. Obviously there's a lot of recent ones. I really like a little quiet place. I love Jordan's films. You know. Get Out and US I loved hereditary. I Dunno if Midsummer's technically horror film but okay. I loved Midsummer So I I love his work. I like a lot of the things that are coming out now will win. You worked with Jordan Peo- in a supporting role in us. Yeah Yeah couldn't that. What was that like what it likes to work with him. Well he's just a dream he's dream US exactly what you'd hope he'd be like smart Very Funny Very Nice But doing that film was so great. Kind of 'cause I that's when I realized that this genre was really fitting for me because I could do things that were so crazy. You know like smiling while dragging a knife across my face and and while laughing and crying at the same time and Jordan. Just come in and be like Dan tastic and that was so funny here. That was so great and I was like. Oh this is like my. This is my genre I can do at everyone like is GonNa love it. Can you do that now from the other side? Can you look at your husband dying and go from tears to laughing in like ten seconds and I was like? Yeah that's awesome. Let's try that so for me that stuff. That's like I love doing that. Like really weird crazy stuff. So I think the leaks genre kind of thriller thing is my gym but you always have that mischief in what you do you know. It's one of the great things we'll see great thing to have that you know what it's going to be with you think it's going to be and that's it. When did that start? When did when was it when you decided that you were going to be an actor that you've thought I can do this. Gosh I don't know I think that I did a film. When I was ten with Harvey Keitel and he was a real actor you know he was a serious actor and he was probably one of the first like real serious actors that I had met and worked with and He was lovely and so nice Spill imaginary crimes. Yeah Yeah And and it was like a real part and I do a couple of dramatic scenes. I think I I don't know I just was like not. It's not like I thought. Oh I'm good at this. I just thought away really like this and this is something I think fits me really well. And then that Director Tony. Actually ended up directing my first episode of the West Wing. Seven years later. You just all crazy. It all comes full. Starting you grow up on sets. I mean lately you've been doing so much. Tv that's been so great that they've calling you the queen of Peak TV. That's great that. Come with the crown. No you don't you don't Nice but movies are another thing too is great to see you doing that. And I also you people. I saw this one in Shirley Shirley I think that's part of the film critic thing is you need to see these nine. Sometimes they turn out really good but again Shirley Jackson or this version of her that she wrote the lottery and other things is not is leading a kind of Virginia Woolf. Oh yes nine. Easy with her. And Michael Barr Gas. Uh-huh please her husband. We we would reference Virginia Woolf all the time It's a really. She is such an interesting life really. That's the that's the thing because when you see in Shirley and you see her faculty party jumps back. Fasten your seat belts. That was really she. Was We really try to you? Know it's IT'S NOT A. It's it's very fictional kind of as you know retelling of of a part of her life But Sarah Gibbons worth this beautiful script and and it it. We really tried to capture her mischief. Though and her her her kind of she liked to inflame you know she likes to kind of poke fun at people. Like to be disrupted disrupted great joy out of it. You know you know the lottery. The short story that she wrote I think to this day. Although the fact may have changed for a long time that story in the New Yorker received the most hate mail of any story ever published in the New Yorker disrupt. It was incredibly people. Were not people did not like what she didn't that story. They loved the story but it would be very upsetting for people. You seem to have a traction to this kind of thing which I love. You know. It's like I'm not afraid of this. I'll do it doesn't matter. We'll get the hand mainstay via I love it. I don't know why I just I. I love dark challenging material. It's what gets me going. Well maybe in between the next three do one rom com or maybe holiday movie. No they should do that. We're trying to make a hallmark Christmas movie and saying that is just making me. I'm like what are we going to do with this? It's going to be like somehow dark and upsetting. Addis cry now. It could be really bad but I I would love to do a smart romantic like when Harry met. Sally is my favorite film of all time and the all time. Oh Yeah that's a bold state. Oh Yeah I love that phone so much but you know you need a really really good writer. I mean that was obviously. We're Ephron it's the best and and and you know you need that kind of writing to do a really good so to find a really good script. Well it's out there there. There are a lot of great writers out there to do all that. So what happens to the characters that you've played? Where did they go in terms of your head? Where do you store them? You know in your consciousness. I don't go away. They just go most people come up to you and say talk to me about Madman. Yes and then I bring it back. I was talking about it. See All right yeah. Go talk about it. What happened yeah I. I don't store them at the same time. They all have really big parts of my personality in them. So there's parts of me and one that's closest to you the way that's so hard because there's yes. I mean I do think June is the most is the closest to me But I also think she's going through a really kind of rough time so I. I think that I don't know how much I identified with her. Maybe more in the beginning when she was more human now she's getting a little rough but There's parts of you. That are very very me. Honestly there's parts of surely I watched Shirley I remember going. Oh my God that's actually me like. I have a big part of me that is Shirley. That's how I know. I think it'd be on doors going to faculty partners especially when I'm grumpy tired. Then the Shirley Jackson tax see well. We don't really want that a little afraid of dealing with this when that happen. Yeah so are you feeling? You're on the right trajectory for you. Is this everything you wanted to be when you said I'm GonNa make this my career. It's more than I actually thought I would be honestly because I never. There's a lot of dreams that you can't even dream. You know I never. I didn't set out to go. I'm GonNa make like a really good horrifying. I'M GONNA be on a show about advertising. It's going to do really well in the sixties. You know like there's stuff that are. I'm make the handmaid's tale. You know a first person narrative book that has no ending like so. There's there's a lot of things that Margaret would be time at that time and so I I didn't think I would ever be been this incredibly lucky physician honestly now. You're starting to shoot season. Four right. Yeah you're going day Monday so actually happening actually happening. It's so crazy and I mean I've texting Bruce and Dana and Dina's directing and you know just it's been yeah I can't I?.

I exercise my speech by communicating by the way i have no honestly no doubt bet my life that shirley and he wrote this together like honestly no doubt because they worked together. Don't forget that people say why. Do you focus on shirley. Hey this is why they worked in concert. I've exercise my speech by communicating with w e advertisers moreover. I have done so respectfully if not harassed threatened anyone kirkman and also has a right to free speech and unlike the average citizen. His speech is amplified because his broadcast on the radio in the amplification is paid for by others so there you go so he wants them. So what is their connection. Shirley and merchant label hate us. I know that but i mean charlene lung you would send her sound yeah. She could she could from that to me. We talked on the phone. They they work they like she would look for something about us and he'd send it to her but was that the only the only connection with he knew she hated her and that's yeah i think so. I mean what they do in their private. The time i have no idea did beautiful child could be wonderful so anyway. Shirley's big thing think shirley shirley w. h. Everybody's laughing what how many so we'll see our pussy like who made that rule. I missed something in fact. It's just the opposite. Exactly jokes come from the same place even if they're not funny. The intent is to make eight people laugh. It's not the other way around. I mean you know i. I'm just trying to give a movie. That's like i'm trying to get a movie. It's not politically correct. That's still funny that a million of them hitting saddle blazing saddles something about mary dome job. It's on the right like you know. You can't say that anymore but if i watched that from flipping around too i think that's funny yes. Does everybody think that's funny.
