"With an awful lot to do in a short bit of time. And to bring us up to speed, we turned out our washing correspondent, Joe Matthew. He's host of sound on weekdays on Bloomberg radio. So Joe, they've got a lot to do, but you just told me that they're all at The White House at the moment, I guess. Well, a lot of them are at least a lot of Democrats as the president signs into law this gun legislation, the gun safety bill that passed a couple of weeks ago, David, but you're right. This is a very familiar scenario for democratic leaders in Congress back in town with a long to do list and a pretty short window to get things done. Keep in mind lawmakers are going to be on recess for the better part of August. Now, senator Chuck Schumer says he is plowing ahead with a reconciliation bill. I should note, by the way, Schumer tested positive for COVID just yesterday, but moving ahead with a reconciliation bill that will sound a lot like the one from last year build back better that never passed. This is a slim down version as Schumer talks with senator Joe Manchin about a final product that could include a lower prescription price plan and also a higher taxes on the wealthy to lower the deficit. The problem here is, as Chuck Schumer moves ahead with reconciliation, Mitch McConnell is hitting the brakes on the bipartisan China competes Bill. This is the one that includes the chip back. This is a major initiative that Democrats and Republicans have wanted to get done, but McConnell says Republicans will not play along if Democrats go it alone with another reconciliation bill. So this indeed is starting to sound a bit familiar here, David. Now, you mentioned the president, he's signing that gun Bill today, and he'll be on his way to the Middle East later on this week. He'll be packing his bags for a very important trip to Israel, they'll also move on to Saudi Arabia. This is another tough one. Progressives don't like this idea as they question Saudi Arabia's human rights record, Republicans are making fun of the president because he's going there essentially to ask for more oil production. They say that should be happening here domestically. We'll pick up on that Joe if you would because there was an op-ed piece by the president of the United States and in Washington Post. Right. Basically, I think perhaps addressing those progressives who don't like his going. And all the emphasis I thought was on security and the Abraham accords and geopolitics rather than the oil. Well, that's right. And The White House would like to remind you of that. And that he is also not going, they will say hat in hand to Saudi Arabia that he'll be asking all of our partners in a time of war and historically high oil and gas prices to try to up production. This is one of the difficult parts of the job here, David, and then this president will be walking a bit of a nice edge as he heads to the Middle East and tries to make his way home with good news. Okay, Joe, thank you so much for coming in from The White House. That's Joe Matthew. He's our Washington correspondent and you can catch him every day of the week at 5 p.m. Eastern Time on Bloomberg radio on sound on. And now we turn to an expert in international relations. He's bob horman of the tedman associate of divisors. He's ambassador hormat served as U.S. deputy trade representative under president George Herbert walker Bush and his undersecretary of state under president Barack Obama. So ambassador hormones, thank you so much for being with us. Pick up on the president's trip to Saudi Arabia. How much of this is about oil and inflation, I guess, and how much it is about actually national security and the region. Well, I think it's both. I think certainly is an underlying theme that we would like Saudi Arabia and indeed other gulf countries to increase oil production that would help put some downward pressure on global prices and help Americans at the pump. But it is not only about that. And I think that it may turn out to be that the big story is going to be on expanding the Abraham accords, which of course are based on efforts to increase ties, political economic and other between the gulf Arabs and Israel. And I think the fact that he's going to Israel Israel would like to see closer ties with Saudi Arabia and other gulf countries may mean that we will see some positive news, maybe substantial positive news about closer ties between Saudi Arabia and other gulf countries and Israel. The Crown prince of Saudi Arabia has to be a little bit careful because not everyone inside Arabia is a 100% enthusiastic about this. But I think you realize that in the new Middle East, there's a lot of benefit between cooperation between Saudi Arabia and Israel intelligence cooperation and of course neither of them are particularly fond of Iran and trading information on Iran and resisting Iran's nuclear growth. It's a common goal of both countries. Yeah, exactly. One thing that maybe Israel and Saudi Arabia can agree on is actually Iran. Let's turn now over to East Asia and particularly Japan. We had that tragic incident on Friday with the assassination of former prime minister Shinzo Abe of Japan. Then we had his party the LDP get a resounding victory on Sunday over in Japan. What does it say about the continued influence of Shinzo Abe and particularly his economic approach? Well, Shinjo abi was a really great prime minister of Japan really historically great. And he did a number of things when the U.S. pulled out of TPP. He resurrected it. No one thought that could be done. And now there's a very solid trade agreement between Japan and many other countries and the Pacific. Also, he's taken a much stronger view on bolstering the defense of Japan against possible incursions from China. The Chinese are pushing their influence out and into some of the smaller islands around Japan and he wants Japan to be in a position where he can push back. If need be and feels the Chinese are encroaching too much on Japanese territory or broader threat to the region. Yes, as I understand it, he was the original of the idea of a free and open indo Pacific region, something that's subsequent administration is really picked up on. But talk about China specifically. I mean, you were there with Henry Kissinger in the day when you were opening up the relations with China. What should our relationship right now be with China? Because it sounds like we're almost not talking right now. Well, that's part

"The market to meet the demand. I think Goldman Sachs had a really good note out over the last day. That said, while there is fear of recession, the fed can't print more commodities. They can't add more commodities to the market. So while demand might drop still, there isn't enough supply and that's where we are right now. It's a very interesting mood because you do look at some of the folks who say a recession will have a giant impact on oil, but then I look on Twitter and I see some of the folks who look at the oil market very closely and they're in a different, almost world saying, hey, we just aren't in the right supply balance to have WTI at a $100. It should be higher. Exactly. We will see, of course, what the OPEC plus group decides later this month in terms of additional barrels to the market. Steve, thank you as always, as Stephen subsidi there, live from Singapore. Let's say I get to China now because president Xi Jinping has criticized sanctions for stalking global economic pain and the speech kicking off this year's BRIC summit. Politicizing instrumentalizing and weaponizing the world economy using a dominant position in the global financial system to wantonly impose sanctions would only hurt others as well as hurting oneself. Leaving people around the world suffering. She is also looking to both the relations with emerging markets and its strained western ties. For more on this, let's bring in our Bloomberg Greater China, senior executive editor, John Lee. So John, what kind of message is she trying to send then with these comments? Well, this criticism of U.S. sanctions is a long running bugbear for China, which has itself been the target of such sanctions, be it relative to Hong Kong and Shinjo. And of course, speaking up, speaking to the developing world, Xi Jinping is finding a more receptive sympathetic ear, a lot of those countries as a result of the invasion of Ukraine are seeing their food prices go up. Their energy prices go up, largely because of the sanctions that have been imposed by the west. Also at this bricks forum yesterday, it should be noted that Xi Jinping also talked about the domestic economy in which he vowed to try and reach China's 2022 economic targets. Of course, in March, try to set a target of getting to 5 and a half percent GDP growth this year. Most economists see that as being further and further out of reach and with that vow, the indication is is that China is going to have to do more. So we've seen some steps taken when it comes to big tech. We've seen some steps when it comes to supporting new energy vehicles. And so the question now is will China do even more going into the second half? Yeah, the answer is probably yes, but we will of course continue to check in with you over the next couple of weeks. Bloomberg's Greater China, senior executive editor Joel new there. Thank you very much. Let's get to the first word headlines for you from around the world with the wrap, Jules is back from Singapore

"Got a podcast Now, dude, we were just joking during the break. Sean Penn State head coach of the NFL, Bill Belichick would never have a podcast. Also, why in the world to Sean McBain need a podcast? He's the very bottom of the list of people who should have a podcast right now, and it's great like it's sick that Sean McVeigh Kyle Shanahan on and they talk openly about the idea of acquiring Matt Stafford. That's something that as a football fan I would love to know more about Sean McDaid has a podcast. That is a lose lose situation. He's not. He's not generating the type of revenue that he needs to cover. I can guarantee that and it's just a possibility for him to sound terrible and have headlines like he's done here. I would imagine, and I don't know this I'd imagine when the season gets going. He's not doing it. I mean, you would hope I don't know how the football coaches have time to do anything besides football in an NFL season is also part of their narrative is football coaches love to tell you how busy they are. They love to tell you much film. They've watched how they've abandoned their family for months at a time, and it's like some badge of honor. Yeah, I don't see my kids, but we're 13 and to exact also imagine, like coaches that do that and live that lifestyle and live up to that narrative were four and 12 to forget it. Dude, you said a three year deal and you want you can sniff the postseason. You've been in third place. Every season of your career. No wonder you can't leave the building. Jeez. Well, maybe that's a good place to start here with the quality questions, just a couple of them coming at you If you could have one NFL head coach outside of Sean McVeigh and Kyle Shanahan to have their own podcast. Who's your guy? Bill Belichick? Belgian. Have you seen him on NFL films? He's entertaining. He's really, really good. You get him going on football. You get him going on women's lacrosse, his two top topics because he's for whatever reason obsessed with women's across He can go. He can break down those sports in an unreal way. And I would love to just listen to a podcast where Bill Belichick interviews Hall of Fame football player. I'd be in on that one of the greatest 30 for thirties. Anybody who hasn't seen it. The two bills about Bill Belichick being the defensive coordinator for Bill Parcells. How that all shook out with him taking the job and they're not taking the job and then going to New England. That's an incredible documentary and them sitting together in a room kind of watching film, and it's a power struggle. Like I think Bill Parcells still thinks he's one up on Belichick just because Belichick was the young Padawan, Not the Jetta. Have you ever have you ever seen the NFL films were both parcels and Belichick are involved in the famous Tom two per game? No Jets punter has to come in and play quarterback because Bill Parcells chose to not use his backup quarterback on the roster. And because for the first three quarters of game he could have his punter on the roster. And so Tom Tuba. The quarterback gets hurt in New York with the Jets. It's like 1999 to pick comes in and plays quarterback Belichick's involved with Drew Bledsoe. On the other side. It is unbelievable. Highly recommend NFL films. The last time a puncher played quarterback in the NFL. Unbelievable We will get I've seen it 15 promise you I will check it out 14 times during quarantine guarantee you I will check that thing out. All right, as we wrap it up here time for my question, actually, let's go one quick one here before we get to the final question. My question is over under Shohei Otani. 59 a half home runs this season, he said 32 As of this recording on Thursday, July the eighth he's going to be the number one seed the home run derby over under 59 a half home runs under but he gets to 50. I think he gets to 52. How many 54 50 55 am comfortable with 55? God, I hope he hit 60. How sweet without being hit. 60, I hope I hope he hit 74 I I don't think that's coming this now. I don't think that's happening this season. Alright, Final 13 Guys come up to the plate. You can walk one of them. You have to pitch the one of them and you can drill one of them. But the guy you drill is coming out to fight you in honor of Shohei Otani passing Hideki Matsui from the most home runs by a Japanese born player. I'm going to give you three Japanese born players. I'm not going to give you sort of arrow. Oh, I'm not going to give you a coast. Get Fukudome A I'm not going to give you show she Shinjo. I'm just gonna 33 great great ones. Shohei Otani, Dickie Matsui and Ichiro Suzuki. You can pitch to one You have to walk or you can walk one and you have to draw one. Go with, okay. I'm walking. Show. Hey, I'm pitching. To eat your Oh, Wow. And I'm hitting that suit. Because each euro I know would kill me that I know each approximately, which is beat my brains in and show. Hey, I saw him last week at the field at Angel Stadium. The guys, you guys gigantic haven't seen the documentary in his current state. I got a feeling I got a shot against. I will tell you this, and I came answer his nickname Godzilla. I don't know if I want to find a guy named Godzilla that I may have messed up. They're going to do it for the cops and Crowley podcast. We're actually off next week. We may be boozing in ST Louis together. We'll see what happens. Who knows, anyway, comes across Back in a couple of weeks. Everybody enjoy the All Star game. Enjoy All Star week. We'll talk to you later, Copes and Crowley on came here. One of 45 and 6 80. It's the sports leader. This has.

"Amid although although greenie had an agreement doesn't get enough credit for how absurd some of his takes are the hyperbole button really said this week before the jones trade that rossini reported yeah egos if the seahawks and up with russell. Wilson metcalfe and julio jones. I'm saying that might be the best three in nfl history and it might not be close. That is take head. I was like who's what now i'm like. He came back cavs really like good. He's a fucking jerry rice also. Julio jones thirty three. I don't even know if he's going to be in an all pro team again. The triplets forum. Yeah that's pretty tough. I think greedy. It's so early in the morning. I think you give them some leeway when somebody in the morning got against leeway. I need the public i need. The audience is out there to respect the absurdity of the green check. Because i don't think he ever gets thrown into the group of other guys. You like if you guys kept track of these more. Yeah you'd be like dude various greenie. Lets fly a hill. Could just if you were a fisherman. He just closed his eyes and let it to see what happens in the mornings. You just get a lot more leeway. Maybe you're right scariest thing if i'm a will there's too scary things of bucks fan and i have a couple of bucks fans in my life. One as that bench was atrocious and defend shinjo. Whose name. I my My name speech impediment thing Accom dante that's the list we need. Is we need your names. It's my name dyslexia top. My verbal dyslexia guys It's not that he's awesome. It's just that it him. Not playing now has jeff teague clanked fourteen minutes in a playoff game free like did you like the jeff teague down ten jaanus running in transition with the angle lopez about to seal kyri at the rim teague sat. Let everybody run past him. Let everybody catch-up defensively thought about it and then brick two three down ten. Did you like that play. I'd be flashbacks. The first part of the celtics season is where he was one. Oh three ninety three something with have six points from their bench. Eight say it was something like that. It was a number that was less than ten. I'm gonna look it up now. Defense senzo There's no time stuff. I thought was incredibly uncomfortable in the playoffs last year. Yes looked had the uncomfortable shirt on or it. Well fair you're right though defensively. He does some really good things that you just would love to have as an option here but that's not really what it is it. Here's here's where this positive or bucks fans not that middleton had the bad game because you're gonna have a good one now that every reshot at like how because they're gonna shoot it better at some point the things i still love about yoenis or there. That guy will go at you. He's never gonna back down. And i think that's at least something honest. You get more credit for despite everybody kinda turning like there's a janas turn now that's happening or if he loses his playoff series is going to be going with goes. Mvp there the beginning of that game bill on like look how big they are. Look offensive rebounds. Look at the second chance points. Look at these short bunnies that screwing up now. They shot it off outside the paint. But i think there's a size advantage that played out in the first quarter. That's gonna play out again. That should at least give you a little hope that the series can get turned around. If you're a milwaukee bucks fan without the second frustration thing. I was going to say. I was the bench. Second was just had the did the lineups. He basically came out of the gate with his best lineup right. Yup and once you stand that now we go into the second quarter. The nets are just whatever team they're gonna put together as just gonna probably be more successful than whatever buxton didn't play on us enough minutes only thirty five. You know a. It's so crazy nash. Place kyri forty. Five and durant forty like nash gets it because you know he played the minutes thing place. You're right about the minutes. But i do think a couple get shaved off there because it was a blow out their late but the first overall win quarters I think they need to stagger it. I actually wouldn't start lopez. I think they have to play jaanus or lopez at all times because they had the non janas non lopez line about their kind of anchored by portis. The nets are going to destroy that lineup. And then they're not going to have enough scoring they're never gonna have enough scoring I think they need to time it. So that they're closing those last six with pez and janas together and lopez. Fyi should have a huge series as a for eleven and it felt like they were always shots. Felt like he could have been eleven for eleven. You know that was interesting deondraye. Didn't play it all. They played by played. Fourteen guys the entree. I guess is just the durant tax. That should that be his using durant. But you have to take our buddy. It's the double date or it's like we actually have to bring her friend to so you're gonna have to come. It's could be the six of us But i guess the andrew just not gonna play anymore which leads us to blake griffin. So look i have some blind spots. I'm not perfect doing this. For a living as a writer as podcast her former.

Let's figure that out and it was a lot of fun to explore that. Yeah so is the sex good right away. I wouldn't call it good bad. It was just a thing that happened. Was it fun right away. Yeah i thought it was fun but a huge part of the reason it was fun it was because it was with him. Sure right I think i'm very lucky. In a sense and i don't think a lot of women in my situation would hold opinion but i think i'm very lucky that i was not my husband's i said well partner He had had a decent string of monogamous girlfriends. "Now give me wrong. I was born and raised here in. You know now that. I'm back home. Sometimes my accent comes out real strong right. I have never in my life been so ashamed and yet so like this is no different than corporate america in my life. So i wanna share with you on day. The lessons that i learned from this whole debacle and how this stuff plays out. It's very systematic exhibit. A dash governor. He gets on my tv and he will blame everybody else while saying that he takes the responsibility and he will hold himself countable. Now here's the lesson guys. Let's say shall job that she hit the fan right and you somehow in the mix right and very easily you can be thrown it right especially hugh. The black woman is supposed to be listening to this show. But if you're not that black woman welcome come in. We are inclusive blanche. Let me tell y'all y'all need to do the same thing you need to sound like. You're being an adult taking responsibility and at the same time saying that. None of this shinjo faulk. How do you do that. I'm telling you it's not just the white thing you humans. All of us should do this in corporate because at the end of the day. Is it really your fault. you're one person. The machine broke whatever that machine is could be a sales machine marketing machine operations. Whatever part of the business. You're responsible for work in if something broke like the electric grid in texas and it broke because people didn't do what they're supposed to do i e weatherwise their shit in your the quote unquote responsible one. Even though it's because people didn't do their job finish it lear. Well you know bob. We're going down to the bottom of this. You guys who are wonderful team. You deserve answers so what we're gonna do is. We're going to investigate the root hawes case. This cannot happen again. I'm going to have to document this. We're gonna have to right. Yes we should write this up. Susan this is an atrocity. I i am appalled. And i'm distraught by what has happened here and i take it by myself and it doesn't matter that such and such and becky and tom and all of them do their job and then you break down how. They didn't do their job but don't say they didn't do their job. He's just kind of breakdown like becky. I had relied on her to deliver this. That didn't happen. That's on me. And then tom and this. And here's all the ways the systems are you talking about all the ways system broke down. 'cause you're going to get to the root then you a leader and so for that karen. I promise you this will not happen again. Not on my watch. So what. I'm asking you for the opportunity to make right like who's going to say no felicia you can gear ride. Who's gonna say that unless like you really cost a lot of money and then they can fire you immediately. There's no real conversation right so if you have the opportunity to have a conversation don't don't shy away from the conversation. Just be prepared. You're talking points of how you will take accountability irresponsibility but then you blame everybody else. That is what we learn from. greg added. We'll get back from the break material.
