Stolen Moments With Harold Sherrick
"Recoup here on the imbalance history of rock and roll Marcus how you doing not bad. How about yourself today? Well I'm doing good but I'm a little nervous because we're trying something different. Today we're going to combine an episode of five favorites with a studio gas well, not in the studio on zoom? Resuming. With Harold Cherokee, he's got a great book called stolen moments. How many years Herald were in La is a seem to time I was born in La so in La for sixty three years. Only been back here for three years moved back here three years ago. where. Were you living before? While I was living in the San Fernando Valley in Sherman Oaks. Dan Is area that you. which is just just over the hill to Hollywood, which is about fifteen minutes from where I live great place to be mad that close you know was wonderful. As a kid growing up there, where did you live and how did you first start plugging into the whole strip in the scene and everything that was going on there? I was born in L. A. Downtown La but then as a kid. Moved to Glendale California which is just right. Next door. They're nice sleepy little town and I basically grew up there went to high school there the whole bit and was there up until like nine hundred ninety and that I but I moved to the valley when I got married a second time and Just. been there all my life and. I was well connected when I was a kid started going to concerts when I was twelve. I concert was the Beatles. Hollywood ball no. That was all I. I went to the last la which was August. Twenty nineteen, sixty six and that was the Beatles Esta left. Day before the last one, which was candlestick. But that was my first concert. That right in the second row air right there. Six dollars? Ticket dollars can you actually hear the Beatles because? I HAVE THEM IN DC and said, the girls were screaming so loud that she couldn't hear the Beatles from where she was sitting in the stadium Yakking you know here and there it wasn't obviously crystal clear. You did have screamed grounding out of most of the time, but you could hear your somewhat mind blown dude, that's all I wanNA say or I'll deal mind-blowing. Well, that'll be a great entry into rock and roll life for anyone. And Talk to us a little bit about the book you were taking pictures around the L. A. Seen for quite a number of years in have some stunning captures in this book in all, it was going to concerts as a kid I used to play around with little Brownie camera when I was nine and ten years old and so eventually when I was able to graduate up to actually getting a decent camera which was. Like nineteen, Seventy, eight, seventy, nine, eighty at one. I really started pushing myself into the into the scene as best I could. It's all proven yourself in the beginning paying your dues you know you're not getting paid when you start out, it wasn't the solely for the money was the for the love of the whole thing. I always had a visual of capturing a great moment. You know whether it was in concert or meeting. Somebody in a hotel room that's what I started doing. Did you build a black and white dark room in your house? My father had a black and white dark room. Yeah. I didn't my house. I had a friend that helped me out a lot a couple of friends that end our rooms and I would bring my films as soon as I shot it the next morning I was there almost at the crack of dawn. We gotta get this process you know right away. That's awesome. You know would do the proof sheets and then big out of print I'd have sometimes I'd have to send something out right away most of the time in the beginning, it was just doing it and getting it done. So I could actually look at what I shot. That's all part of the beginning anyway trial and error is how you learn from a day to day thing you know 'cause I'm self taught I didn't go to school for it and I just I always wanted to do that. You know just take pictures because my father. Was, a newspaper man you were for hearst for the Herald, examiner in La A., and that's how I of got into it. When I was a kid was he would always take me down to the office I used to look at all the photos and the photo room with saga offers, and then I go to the pressroom and watch the paper roll off the presses at night with the greatest greatest experience you know the newspaper game sets how I got into want shoot black and white for falls. What was the first concert? You Shot Elvis Presley Whoa. Seventy six year before he died he he never he didn't come to L. A. and seventy-six closes. He came Long Beach Arena and I had tickets through a friend who is very well connected into Elvis and getting good tickets. So we had some really good seats and that time I think I'd be twenty five bucks to see John a few pictures. They didn't really come out that well. So that's why nothing has really been seen on that because I nothing came out that good at all.

I understood why she didn't feel totally comfortable in New York, but I'm different than my mother, you know my my mother is is not as curious about being in the world, and just traveling and bumping up against other people, whereas that's all I wanNA do. You, know so I knew very very early on even when I was four that the reason we were leaving India is because it was very taboo for my mom to be a divorce. A divorce just didn't happen in Indian culture in growing up and going back to India I still don't know I know one person in India. WHO's divorced? My mother left when I was two and I lived with my grandparents, and I didn't see my dad so I had no recollection of my real father I didn't even know what his face looks like. Because they had ripped up all the pictures so from two to four. I didn't see either of my parents so I literally was so excited to come to America, because America to me, meant being reunited with my mom.

less last year well last I checked those people have expenses too and they're out of work some wondering why exactly were means testing this thing like seriously if you are a hundred thousand dollars last year which by the way is not a ton of money in LA or New York it's a ton of money in the middle of the country a hundred thousand dollars in LA or New York a hundred thousand dollars is really not like tons of money it isn't okay that's like upper middle class in LA and New York it is certainly not top one percent in LA or New York mean rents out here normally in LA for aid let's say I but let's say a two bedroom apartment in like Sherman oaks right would be probably two thousand dollars a month is that is that not right like a decent two bedroom apartment and asking call news producer leasing three thousand maybe three thousand months or twelve hundred Bucks is not exactly going to do it right that that that that that's certainly not enough for people and then not only is it not enough for people to phase it out at ninety nine thousand dollars a year is totally insane okay the it would also give families an additional five hundred Bucks per child which again in gonna do it unemployment benefits are gonna grow substantially go to many more Americans this is already in the original bill the original bill out for three months of unemployment Democrats are trying to extend it to four Democrats would love to extend it forever because they wanna make sure that everyone gets paid no matter how on willing they are to work are you a member of the IOC said this in her green new deal proposal that people should be paid whether they were unwilling or unable to work just lumped in unwilling to work like okay I don't feel like going to work today pay me anyway now again well this is going on it is perfectly appropriate to provide people compensation for the salaries they are being denied by the government but once this thing ends we're gonna have to transition over to an economy where people actually are encouraged to get back to work and that means not incentivizing people to stay home from work and that means that this can't last for six months by the way if if we're still paying people to stay home from work at their initial salary rates in six months the economy is toast basically it was just recognize that at this point small businesses will receive emergency loans but only if they keep their workers so the federally guaranteed loans available community banks will only be available to small businesses the pledge not to lay off their workers the problem of course is that immediately all those workers will be laid off when the crisis ends because the market's not gonna be there the long lasting effects of destroying markets is going to be that takes a little while for those markets to recover which means that companies are not able to prepare for the future what you really need is generous unemployment compensation which is in the bill any loans available to businesses to act like businesses and what they need to do to prepare for the future so that when this economy does kick back in and they're ready to hire up again as opposed to firing people distressed companies can receive government bailouts but with strings attached if you are a distressed company then the then you may have to take the government owning stock in your company Boeing is artist I'm not doing that is it will just lay everybody off on your own stock in a company we're not going to let the government run a company so if you want to if you want to we just won't take the long would rather go bankrupt and let the government run a company by the way I feel exactly the same way if the provision for daily wire work that we have to take a loan from the government in order to move forward but the government now gets to sit on the board of the daily wire forget about it seriously forget about defeats the purpose of our company Democrats also secured a provision ensuring it from family businesses can't receive loan money through the fund which which is absurd I'm sorry it's an absurdity it is ridiculous the people who work for the trump organization are still human beings if you work for the trump hotels you still have a job by the fact you're gonna lose your job in the trump name is on the hotel that's not really a reason why that why the trump hotel should be treated the same as a Marriott or Hilton obviously companies that receive money also cannot engage in stock buybacks for additional year after receiving government assistance which of course means that the stock market is gonna remain low because what do you think companies do when they feel they're undervalued they buy back their stock from the outstanding from outstanding stockholders and then they re sell the stock in order to raise money for future capital raises right that's why you buy back their stock so there's some good stuff in here there's some bad stuff here but bottom line this is there is nothing passed today meanwhile the New York times wanting son of monies we're gonna pass the biggest pending bill in the history of a planet earth bar none and son of money Jim Tankersley says if you wanna shut down our economy to fight a pandemic without driving millions of people and businesses into bankruptcy you need the government to cut some tracks across AmerisourceBergen leader struck early Wednesday morning we'll get a lot of checks in the mail those who only a few months of financial pain well right that's that's sort of what we're designed to do I mean we can't do this forever what do you think the money comes from there's a reason that the interest rates on on short term bonds and it has not dropped below zero I mean the fact is that over time those interest rates can rise again because the demand is going to fall off fairly intensely in fairly quickly Mohammed al Arian from Ali ons has a piece over at Bloomberg today talk about what needs banks should start to call in their loans it would be very difficult to get alone emergency monetary and fiscal policies enacted circuit breakers but the bottom line is that D. D. only thing that's going to alleviate this thing is going to be the alleviation of the crown of iris disaster itself all are into it Mohammed el Erian says the higher quality segments of the bond market are turning away from the illiquidity path that leads to market failures which is good emergency cash handouts and loans white house in Congress are set to authorize have the potential to enhance the ability for companies to avoid immediate layoffs and for households to meet urgent needs but in the long term we're going to need to see some alleviation of the underlying crisis right this can't just continue indefinitely meanwhile Chuck Schumer is is it's very where there's a big disconnect between Chuck Schumer the senator from New York and policies of Lowe's is we say is holding this thing up Chuck Schumer was spending the day talking about how big help is on the way this thing is inevitable were moving toward conclusion here it was Chuck Schumer saying big help is on the way we're we're gonna get this thing done to the American people we say big help quick help is on the way
