US storm brings tornadoes, blizzard-like conditions; 2 dead

"A massive storm system is marching across the U.S. generating severe weather and tornadoes, the same powerful storm that dumped several feet of snow in the California sierras spawned destructive tornadoes that wrecked buildings in parts of Oklahoma and Texas, dozens of buildings were damaged and injuries were reported in the suburbs north of Dallas, in Louisiana, two deaths were reported. I've seen several tornadoes. This was the worst tornado that I've worked. Cattle Paris sheriff Steve crater spoke to KSL and Keith Bill Louisiana. The few houses that are in there totally destroyed gone. Searchers found the bodies of a mother and son amid the debris. A couple of feet of snow will fall over the dakotas and the storm spawned blizzard warnings from the northern high plains to the Great Lakes, the system is expected to hobble the upper Midwest and will move into the northeast and central Appalachian Mountains later today. "Now. Interestingly not there's companion piece here Headline america has a moral obligation to get our translators out of afghanistan. Doesn't seem like that's case seems as though those translators and their families and friends are flapping in the breeze until well they suffer a much worse fate at the hands of the taliban but this piece by a man and alan cross says we promised we would get them out. Oh so now. We don't keep our promises anymore. We promised we would stand by the thousands thousands of afghan translators and their families as they stood by our troops and the american government personnel contractors for almost twenty years. But now those promises are not going down the drain in pretty grave danger. Is there any other kind of being broken. Oh and this is a good visual right. Good optics here. The american flag has been lowered at the us embassy in kabul after the taliban Swept into the capital city. Just yesterday boy. That's one for the memory. Banks says i looked up and saw the headline that kabul had indeed fallen but it. There's so many questions as to why this went down the way it did because rarely and i don't care which side of the political aisle you fall on but rarely has an american presidents predictions been so wrong so fast and so overwhelming league convincingly as president biden when it comes to afghanistan. It's a stunning failure. How else can you describe it. It's an embarrassment not only to biden but to the united states and yes as i mentioned earlier. It's a traumatic turn for those veterans who sacrificed in afghanistan over the past twenty years the twenty thousand plus that had been wounded in action. Not only talking about our military but indeed a contractors as well survivors of the more than twenty three hundred. Us military personnel. Who lost their lives. Who made the ultimate sacrifice in afghanistan. Okay sure there's plenty of blame to go around for this twenty year fight in afghanistan. I should have got out in two thousand and four. But that's just me. Perhaps the effort as other nations have experienced the effort was doomed from the start. That effort to rebuild a country but the abandonment of the afghans who stood by us. Who helped us. Who counted on us. Who believed our promises. They state their lives on those promises. Well it's pretty much a final gratuitous. Shame that we could have. Well avoided the biden administration once again failed to hear heed. Those warnings on afghanistan failed to act with urgency and the failure has left of thousands of afghans to transcends terrible. A horrific fate.

Steve ramsey just plucked that right out of my mind. So appreciate that about you. But you know you. You and i were talking over the break and i had shared that story about my experiences in a parking lot with people coming up to me for a couple of them and once you hear the story once second time around. You're even more skeptical but people coming up to me going. Oh my cell phone. I've run out of zoom. As and i need to fill in the blank o. Rien you had something similar happened to you. Thank you again. So i was working at a restaurant not too long ago and i got off while my chef says probably about four or five in the afternoon and i was outside my car just hanging out and for psych before i was about to go home and some random dude came up behind the dumpster. He was like own hair. I but my kid lives or us over in school and like some really weird area like lions or something. Like that. And i was like okay. I need a ride. And i was like. I can't do that for you. Like i don't even know you. I mean if you probably were on my co workers or something like that. I would not you but funny though i mean didn't didn't you get just a little bit skeptical as the story wound on. You're going down a twenty four year old for a ride. "That someone can get their hands on and take off with That's kind of the goal and the the cleaner the cleaner cut. They look the more You know middle of the road. They look the less likely are to to have those spidey senses kick in but frankly There's a whole lot of way for people to get help without approaching random strangers in the parking lot so when that occurs You're definitely in the right boat to say. I don't think. I wanna go down this path because i like many other people. I help other folks if they're in trouble but again. Unfortunately we kind of look at these things with a little bit more skepticism. Then perhaps we used to and maybe to our own benefit absolutely You know we're gonna see more more of this as as joblessness continues to kind of be issue that we're dealing with around. The state is drug addiction. Becomes more and more prevalent You know these are the folks that are trying to figure out how to use your money to keep their addiction rolling absolutely frightening all right before i let you go this morning We'd never enough time. It seems but so we are Observing i won't say celebrating We are observing one year of that red flag law being in effect. What's your takeaway. Well you know the attorney general has been putting out statements about Not being utilized That much in the state of colorado less than one hundred and twenty five times and that He plans on using the post for the peace officer standards and training board to try to promote the use of red flag through law enforcement More and more as as a law becomes more understood. And and i think You know it's easy for the attorney general of stay safe. Sit back and say all. This first year wasn't bad you also have to realize at twenty twenty was a pandemic year and nothing was normal courts for shut down. It was hard for people to to move about Interactions or different. And yes. i'm glad that the there were less than one hundred and twenty five applicants. But i fear that if we don't get this lock corrected it's going to get overused and abused as time goes on. Well you're more than instantly acquainted. What's that inmates filed for an extreme risk protection order against you three times now. Yeah yeah if it were singularly isolated. I'd say okay well. The system corrected itself. But each time. You gotta you gotta firm fingers shook and his face and was told if he did it again. He was gonna be Charged obviously that never occurred so long story short. Yeah the the. The bill is still right for Abuse and we know that there have been some attempts not just against me but others around the state and now the attorney general uses that as a way to say well. No one actually got red flagged when they certain we don't know that for sure but You know we'll see what we'll see what happens over time. I guess it's still Still too early to tell my book. "Ryan kelly added again a. You pulled that song right out of my gray matter. At least synapses that are still functioning. Because the topic does your is the fact that he police impersonators targeting women in weld county working from a piece out of k. Dvr and the weld county sheriff's office. Needless to say is is warning warning all of us about this police impersonator now. Apparently the incidents happened near the town of eerie on both the well and the boulder sides of the county line suspect is described as a clean shaven white man about six feet tall with average length brown hair. He's been described as wearing a black button-down short sleeved shirt. Black pants and a utility belt with a baton on his hip northern colorado's voice semedo nine one zero three one thirteen ten. Kfi joined this morning by weld county. Sarah steve breen severance welcome back to the show. This is scary stuff on again. And i you know i always say i wish it was under better circumstances but unfortunately the the job i do normally lines up with these kind of stories and guess. It's is a scary incident. Anytime you have a person out pretending to be law enforcement and making contacts with citizens on the on the side of the road you know obviously. There's a potential for things to go very bad. And and we're we wanna make sure we snap this guy up as soon as we can and We're just definitely asking for the public's help and and giving us any tips that they might possibly have for this individual. And how do we go about doing that. Giving us some tips. Well there are always people can always call into nine one one if they see something that's not The doesn't look right. You know a traffic stop. That's being conducted other being pulled over You know they're always welcome to call in on nine one one and say. I think i see something here. That doesn't seem quite right. We would rather respond to something and find out that it's no big deal than not get the incident reported and all and quite frankly on all four of these If the if the persons who were being pulled over had Had kinda known to do that. We would probably be farther along in this investigation. But you know i. I think there's always some hesitancy of of calling in and saying. Hey something doesn't seem quite right but And this particular circumstance we couldn't encourage more but people can always call into our admin line You can look that up through through pretty much any internet connection but nine one ones always a safe bet.

"Of county commissioners and our local health department will continue to expect citizens in weld county to make wise choices for their own health and Obviously you know where. I stand on all that stuff. I don't think it's my job as a sheriff to go out and enforce public health borders. And so we're going to hope that citizens do what's best buy them and and You know just work through it as we have Last year and a half that. I wish my two weeks of vacation time got extended as because that would be. That would be pretty. Nice talking with sheriff. Steve reams the other issue that we're starting to see a a pop up a lot is the mandate of people requiring to get the vaccine to work for a certain industry or certain company will the weld county sheriff's office be enforcing that anytime soon. "Yeah there's a lot of bad girls bad boys bad children about everything read around the state of colorado right now on the line with me weld. County sheriff steve reams stevie they're here. Thanks for having me. On again he knew. Thanks for coming on. i appreciate it. Good morning. I hope you've had a few cups of coffee because i now i'm still trying to get enough down me. Yeah that's that's definitely part of the morning routine. Exactly and i am not a morning person so every time i do fill in for gail i'm always like okay pot of coffee before i have to anyway So i've kind of been talking a little leading into my story. That comes out today On this thing that i've been working with you for seems like forever because unfortunately there are so many bad girls out there right now that it took me a while to get them all run them all through the court system but we were talking and you are currently in a predicament. That in twenty five years of law enforcement. You've never seen before with the number of murder suspects hanging out with you at the jail right now. Talk to me a little bit about what's going on. Well our court systems essentially essentially shut down At at the beginning of twenty twenty for code so there were no major trials by on and that meant suspects who were in jail for murder Basically just set there and on top of that During that same legislative cycle the The democrats that were in charge of the legislature also removed the penalty for For murder they. They removed the death penalty. I should say for murder So you kinda of have this This weird effect where oftentimes that that That charge or that that Punishment would have been threatened against someone Who was suspected of homicide to try to you know. Ease the burden on the court and and get someone to just take a plea and sending some Sentence to the department of corrections. Those opportunities are gone. So essentially we have a whole bunch of murder suspect settlement our jail and They're not going anywhere anytime soon. You and i were talking about the average length of stay at the jail has increased by thank. You said something. Like sixteen days Over just the last year so what is causing that so yeah for for your listeners. you know we do an average of how long a person typically stays in jail and that number always been around twenty one or twenty days prior to co that. It's crept up to between thirty six and thirty eight days and that's a reflection of how long it's taking For the court process to work with individuals in our jail again. That's an average so we still have people that come in and book out within twenty four hours but those longer those more serious offenses are sitting in jail much longer. So it's driving. That average way up right and i think i was looking at the list that i got from your department are from your office on The murder suspects that are sitting in there. And you've got some guys in there that have been in there since two thousand eighteen. I mean there and you know one of the and this this is in the county jail these you know one of the suspects that sitting in there that i just spoke about coming in from the last segment was kevin eastman. "I've argued about this a couple of times hall of fame and we can have that conversation and and you know what there's only one. I don't think there's any actual who active eligible eligible for mvp's who aren't hall of fame Kennedy metabolism hall of fame. And honestly the kennedy matombo as a player doesn't have the the resume to back that up. He was not he was a good player. Not a not a hall of fame player. He's done amazing things after his playing career humanitarian wise. And i'm sure that there's mcclain's for that but you watched the most of his career. I've season tickets nuggets back in those days and he he was just. I mean the guy didn't average ten points a game. So i i don't know how he's a hall of famer but nicole. Yokich is probably now made himself but that puts him in the same category with david thompson. Data's l- alexey which is like that. So it's a bit premature in my opinion on the best nugget of all time but certainly his age. What twenty six twenty. Seven years old. His he still has a really good years in front of him. And the the most impressive thing about nicole yokich is that everybody else who was in the final. Four last year lakers heat. You know This is about the faded that injured. Lebron james has done ironman is a career couldn't sustain after that short offseason. He couldn't play. Joel embiid mr ton of games This guy played every game this year. He was he was arguably better actress the shortest offseason nba history. I'll be better than a year ago. And obviously he's got even better since jamal murray he's been out it's just astounding when he's able to do and if he continues this pace for a couple more years he will probably go down the greatest nugget of all time but might be tick premature to put him in that category but if his career ended right now if the call yoga just ended right. Now he's in the conversation. But i don't know that he has the body of work longevity wise yet to be put at the very very top. But he's by on the mount rushmore for sure your vp. I disagree with you. I do think it cements in because of what he's done to this organization the fact that we are talking about a championship caliber team. And where we're headed. I think that absolutely cement as the best and for him to win the mvp for you know be the lowest drafted mvp ever..

"The i think the most obvious thing is. You're you're gonna be on camera No matter who you're interacting with and law enforcement There will be a body camera present. And sometimes that's a good thing You know sometimes it's it's you know it doesn't really matter It's kind of the the new norm. So that is something you will see. Even for the officers that i have working in the jail they'll be required to wear body cameras now to That's just going to be a part of our standard issue equipment. But the other thing you're going to see a very protracted way in which law enforcement has to interact with people because of all the protections that they have to make sure that they're taking for themselves to ensure that they absolutely textbook doing everything The book not making any potential mistakes because of the the mere fact that they can now be sued in their personal capacity and there is no there is no exemption for them You know if they if they happen to violate someone's constitutional rights. Even if they do so in good faith They can still be held accountable. And and on a on a personal level That has a protracted and very noticeable chilling effect on law enforcement. And you're going to see. Probably less proactive policing and Much slower pace and was law enforcement is going to work because they don't wanna make a misstep you talk about violating constitutional rights. Even in good faith. Can you give us an example of something that that might look like sure Call for service comes in a say. A person's believed to have robbed a bank and description giving the person and direction from the they're running from the bank running west downtown street and wearing a white shirt and blue jeans and so law enforcement floods the area. They see a guy running down the street. Where white shirt and blue jeans and you know they. They have reasonable suspicion to make that contact. Go to stop the guy and let's say that that person doesn't immediately comply so there's a little bit of a tussle and kind of find out. That's the wrong person. Well law enforcement was doing everything that they thought was in. Good faith it was. It was matching up with the description. They were given. You know the person's running from the scene maybe that guy just happened to be a jogger who liked to run in life certain genes. How how do you see the courts mean. This is what this is something that i would call commonsense right you everything. In that case like lines out that that makes sense. That would be this issue now. Do you see that. The courts would rule in that way. And i know that's a big question to ask because obviously all these are individual cases. But how do you see you know the the court seeing something like this well and that's the whole problem is We just don't know and especially if these things go to a jury trial What the anti-cop sentiment that seems to be Becoming more and more pervasive out there..

When i think about climate change i think jobs in keystone yup exactly. Yeah and he was talking. I think he was referencing. Job creation job destruction. But that's what we are seeing. And then he he talks about job. Creation You do not a to agree i can. I'll speak strictly economics. Yep do not create jobs by doubling the capital gains tax on. The wealthy right realized that that is a trickle down effect on anyone that is in the market. I heard one analysts. Say and you can calibrate me on this. There are one hundred million americans in the market and This analysts and i'm sorry These qualifies weasel words. Because i can't remember the analysts name But he said essentially what you're going to see. Is this rush to get out of the market before those capital gains taxes. Kick go up. Yeah now we don't know how much they're going to go up yet. I mean the proposal is that they go from twenty to almost forty percent depending on how you look at it. The proposal is that they double well go back says strictly economics and take the politics out of it. You don't create jobs by doubling the amount of money you take from the wealthy If government wasn't taking that money it would have to be guess what reinvested by the wealthy. And when it's invested it does guess what he creates jobs. And where are most of those jobs. Most of those jobs are in the middle class and set aside salary increases Just talk about strictly job creation. "We're talking about the last year that our economy crashed because the government shutdown the economy in response to the covid pandemic. Yeah yeah and you make a very good point there but once again it seems as though believe he mentioned jobs of forty three times last night During that hour and ten minute address. But it's almost a time of cognitive dissonance for me because he's talking about jobs and job creation yet. He's raising taxes on corporations making china all the more attractive as a landing spot for major corporations. This how we're going to compete with china but the bigger problem is this. We're talking about cradle to grave mentality here as government. Tentacles continue to stretch into our lives work for us dignity but it seems as though they wanna pay us to sit home and eat funds on the couch while there were two two points in his speech last night that i i definitely was shaking my head one was. Why can't we build those Those windmill blades those windmills and pennsylvania instead of china. We do build them right here in colorado driving around weld county. You'll find several vestis. Blade factory is a that are operating right here. So i don't know if he doesn't understand that but then the second one when he talked about we. The people is the government And that was the end of his speech. He didn't even get an applause to that not even from his own from his own base That was pretty telling in my mind but it also tells you where his agenda is This is no longer a country of we. The people this is a country in his mind. If we the government and you'll all be subservient that that's that's the message. I took away Yeah i i don't think his plans are are smart for the american people. I think the idea of taxing corporations and expecting that to create jobs They just doesn't work well and again shades of barack obama. You remember when president. Obama very tame asli said. You didn't build that well. The line last night was the middle class. Built this country but unions built the middle class. So i threw. The gloves are off when it comes to pay back for his supporters. Yeah i mean you know. His his agenda is not one that that he seems to control He seems to be controlled by by the people who are pulling his strings whether that'd be unions that be Chinese interests whatever it may be He danced around anything of importance to the american public. And he just talked about taxing and giving free things to people who who Probably would be better served to just go out and get their jobs back going from the macro to the micro. Although in our minds micro is of tantamount importance by the way seven. Thirteen thirteen ten. Kfi joined by weld county. Sheriff steve rings. Share frames County sheriff steve reams who did announce his bid for a third term back on april first by the way well we did what we do so well a little smart texting as i said before the break. If only so that. I could keep my eyes open through the speech airframes. Welcome back to the show me on a game. Gail you bat were your takeaways. Well i thought the speech overall is pretty lacklustre. A lot of platitudes. I guess Brought strokes not a lot of detail as to How any of this Honey of these ideas. We're gonna come come true but We do know that there. There's gonna be a tax hike And i think we'll also feel the pain of that even though president biden said. It's aimed at only households that make our only persons who make over four hundred thousand dollars. Well we all know what trickle down effect means when you tax when you tax the most wealthy. They're going to figure out how to stay the most wealthy so I thought it was pretty underwhelming. personally in terms of content and red meat. I guess as the case may be Yeah i would agree with you on that point. But i can't help it go back to Then candidate barack obama back in two thousand and eight year member before he was first elected and he said we're days away from radically transforming america. Well he laid the groundwork for that but it seems like oh dear. Old uncle joe who never ever gave any indication of well his rather progressive vision and his Aggressive moves in terms of Just raising taxes through the roof during his basement campaign it seems as though he is radically transforming america like we have never seen before. Well we certainly know. He's spending more money than any other. He's he's having more money printed than any other president in history. I mean this plan. He was talking about it. I am six trillion dollars He doesn't he doesn't address. The things that i think are most important to americans. And that's how do we just get back to work. He keeps talking about handing money out citizens. But i think most most people would like to be able to get back to the job they had before the pandemic and before joe biden took office and started killing oil and gas jobs across the country. I mean you know. It's it's kind of the chicken or the egg but right now You know biden. He standing on all these issues as if they've been long existing issues when truly..

Horrific is the word that i'm sticking with. because there's there's nothing that can in my brain that can comprehend what happened yesterday. You know unfortunately in the state of colorado We've dealt Let's say we collectively as as a community and as law enforcement i've dealt with these types of incidents for quite some time and It becomes pretty routine training for law enforcement officers all around the state to respond to these active shooter incidents and You know yesterday was was one of those events and While the outcome was still tragic and horrific you think about how much worse it would have been had. Those brave officers not responded in the way they did well. And that's that's exactly right. And i think that's things that that as You know a officers you you start to learn from these different events and and obviously we have to have an open honest conversation about how to prevent them but from from your experience i mean you you talk about that training these officers. i mean. They did everything they could absolutely absolutely and you know we you know. We often kinda make this comment jess. That officers are only minutes away when seconds count and yesterday is painful as that is..

Oh well boy we've been hearing about this storm for over a week and it's going to be the mother of all storms. It's going to be awful. Well turns out they nailed it. They got it right. So are you digging out. Have you been able to get into your car. I just glued to the video coming out of so many communities for collins among them because fort collins got really hard hit by this storm and it was to that heavy heavy wet snow to which your aching back on attest to this morning. If you were out shoveling or trying to rescue your trees and shrubs and greenery from this heavy wet snow but when i saw just the weight of that snow and the video of tree branches just snapping and those heavy branches falling on people's roofs one guy lived in a mobile community in fort collins and they were talking to a neighbor of his who apparently had been awakened by the tree branches falling not only to the ground..

Coloradans React To 'Red Flag' Law

"A gun loving rocker Ted Nugent is entertaining a crowd talking freedom politics and guns you know why you have too many all don't you I haven't been here in years it was weld county sheriff Steve greens who invited Nugent here the event is a fundraiser for the sheriff we're talking about the red flag well that's what we get all this notoriety for in the state Colorado's red flag bill officially called the extreme risk protection order bill is now law set to take effect in January it'll allow family members or law enforcement to get a court order forcing an individual to temporarily give up their guns if they appear to be a significant risk to themselves or others sheriff dreams believe Colorado's law is unconstitutional the long and short of it is this I'm not gonna confiscate someone's guns reams is talking about all of this partially because it's a political issue he's an elected official unlike police chiefs who are generally appointed well obviously it's my role as the police chief to make sure the department enforces the laws that are on the books this is mark Jones the head of the Greeley police department who says he's planning to enforce the law but also understand concerns around it on one hand Jones supports the second amendment on the other hand I also am a police chief in an error where mental health issues are probably at all time highs all across the country not just in Greeley or just in what county I do believe there are people in our society that have no business having guns many states have passed these laws in the aftermath of mass shootings but in practice they're often used in situations involving domestic violence and self harm fire arms are the mostly the way that people die from suicide and also the most common way that people die from suicide Kimberly Pratt works in suicide prevention in northern Colorado means restriction is important she says but taking away means isn't just gonna stop the feelings it's not gonna stop the reason why they want to die for this reason and others some organizations that work with people impacted by gun violence expressed uncertainty about how effective the new law might be one advocacy group mental health Colorado said in a statement that it believes that everyone should have access to the law and that saving lives should not be a partisan

Colorado House Gives Final Approval to 'Red Flag' Gun Bill

"Tobago guns in Colorado USA radio's Timberg with the story. Colorado is on the verge of passing law that would allow officials to take guns away from people with the judge deems them to be too dangerous. Some law enforcement officials are not happy with the Bill and even calling it unconstitutional and saying they won't enforce it which could land some of them in jail. Jail fine me or just hold a contempt hearing to further this argument along and honestly, I think any of those possibilities are out there. Weld county Colorado sheriff Steve rim speaking there on CNN the Bill passed the Colorado Senate by a single vote last week and now heads back to the house for a final vote before landing on the governor's desk
