"Between law enforcement and far right wing groups. when we come back, we'll talk more pointedly about how race factors into all of this. So we'll be back. This is on point. This is on point magnetic. Roberti this hour we are exploring how to understand what the relationships are might be between law enforcement or some members of American law enforcement and far right wing extremist groups. I'm joined today by Michael German. He is a former special agent with the FBI, in the early nineteen, ninety s he went undercover and infiltrated right wing extremist groups in the United States. He's now with the Brennan Center and author of a new report titled Hidden in Plain Sight Racism White Supremacy and far-right militancy in law enforcement, and we started the hour playing that tape or sound from the video in Kenosha Wisconsin where police were seen throwing water bottles to the Kenosha Guard. A armed vigilante group included amongst that group was seventeen year old Kyle Rittenhouse who was subsequently. Charged with the murder, the shooting murder of two protesters in Kenosha. So there's something else about what has been happening Kenosha that I think is worth exploring a little. So this takes US actually back to two thousand eighteen when Kenosha county. Sheriff David Beth made some comments about a case involving shoplifting. The Sheriff said following the arrest of five suspects who had been arrested for allegedly shoplifting Tommy Hilfiger outlet store. There was a high speed chase after that four of the suspects were black one was a minor and in the wake of that chase and arrest. Sheriff, David Beth said this some point we have to get to the point that we lock these people up we we have agent assigned to each and every person that goes to the court system, and if they can't complete high school if they get in trouble in high school, if they have a criminal record if they do drive by shootings. Sell or give heroin to other people if they come and steal thousands of dollars if we don't think this cost society in the people of our community, our nation if we don't think that that costs, US billions of dollars, you're wrong. Let's put them in jail. LEX. Stop Them. From. Truly at least some of these meals going out and getting ten other women pregnant and having small children. Let's put them away at some point. We have to stop being politically correct, and I don't care what race don't care how old they are. If there's a threshold that they cross. These people have to be warehouse not recreational time. In the jails. We put them away. We put them away for the rest of their lives so that the rest of us can be better. Now we're playing. Sheriff best extended comments because his comments provide their own context here. So he went on and talked about why he believes the united. States has a higher crime rate than other countries and according to Sheriff Beth. Again, this is in two thousand, eighteen. He said that the only one of the only solution was harsher punishments. In this country in this community in this state, we have to get to the point that we no longer will put up with. The garbage people that. Fill our communities that are cancer to our society. The ones that do. Carjackings in. MILWAUKEE. They go into a car while their child is in a back seat because it's running filling up with gas. These people are not in ashes to society. These people just need to flat up. And I'm waiting for the for our lawmakers are people to really not stand for. Really, what we're living with. And the riots when someone gets shot by police officer I understand mistakes I. got it. But. When a person comes out with a gun, police officer shoots him and there's a walk there's a riot. We got to take action. We gotta take care of the people that are doing this. That's Kenosha County Sheriff David Bethel in two thousand, eighteen in comments he made following a shoplifting case he later on apologized for those comments and then again did so last week when the video resurfaced now played that because I want to introduce into the conversation leflore Stevens Dugan, a politics professor at Princeton University and author of race to the bottom how racial appeals work in American politics professor Stevens Dugan welcome to the show. Thank you for having me. So. Sheriff. Beth made those comments I mean we've been talking about far right wing political extremism and law enforcement. But Sheriff Beth's comments were made not in response to any political event but to a shoplifting case in two thousand eighteen. So what does that tell you about how powerfully race underlies? These connections that were trying to explore here. I mean, I think it speaks to the power of race and many of these tropes that we see both politicians but also law enforcement or you know someone's Grandad at inks giving These are deep seated stereotypes about criminality particularly regarding blackmails, and so he espoused what I think a lot of people think but for some time maybe it was seen as politically not correct to say that but even that sort of norm seems to have. Eroded. And so is the is the erosion of that norm happening. More rapidly now because of the tenor of the political conversation nationally. I think that has something to do with it. So our racial identities and our racial attitudes are so tightly. Wound up with a lot of people's political affiliations and political identities that it's almost hard to disentangle the two and as we see more political polarization that. is also accompanied by racial polarization to.

"Just f y I I can't stop it all. All by the way, you're helping us if you if you're outside protecting your business with a gun, because that's what he's saying he goes. No, you're creating confrontation by being outside with a gun. You can step off right now by suggesting that anyone exercising their second Amendment rights or protecting themselves or their businesses, creating a confrontation because you refuse to do your due diligence and protect the innocent so they don't feel like they have to step out into the streets of that. Fire re hellscape to do it for you. If you don't want citizens out in the streets with guns, then do your damn job. And that goes for the leaders as well in Wisconsin and in Kenosha. I assure is hell, I'm not going to be told you can't protect yourself or protect your property with a firearm, but we're not going to do it either. Then I'll do it. The purpose of the Second Amendment. One of So This this baby man, I read this last night. I was like Wanna roll up my finger sleeve so I could take faster. Kenosha County Sheriff David Beth. I'm not familiar with this man. Maybe he's a nice guy. I don't know what he said here was just moronic you have to. He has to press press Bates to sound bites to the press back to back where he says, Yeah, well, we're not going to be able to stop all of the Ah Writing. He condemned social media is the source of antagonism and misinformation and said that some people, according to media, it have urged his office to deputize the people who come to the city armed, ostensibly in defense of local businesses against looting. He had, and he heard the sound. But he was bragging about it Kind of is like white people call my office. And why don't you deputize And I said, Oh, hell, no. So Sheriff Beth doesn't trust the citizens is what he just said. He doesn't trust you at all. All I asked me to deputize They're clearly not doing the job. It wasn't police that prevented that one business that was burned one night and then didn't get burned again. The second night it wasn't Beth and his deputies out there that prevented that from happening. It was the armed business owners who did that. I'm gonna tell you something. I support my police. But you want to endanger that relationship. You say stupid stuff like this. I'm not here to be anyone's friend. I'm in this for rights. They affect me. It is selfish and I don't care. I want my rights and I want to be left alone. And if you're telling me that I can't defend myself or defend my property, and you're not going to do it either. I'm not going to listen to you. You have lost any authority with me. Don't you deputized as I said, Hell, no. Cause we had stuff like this. That happened. That's I was thinking about the logic of that for a moment. So he's saying well, because we weren't out there on we were. We were not doing this businesses and you could sit here and say all day long at the city told you to step back or the governor told you to step back. You know, I didn't realize you swore the oath to the governor, particularly or to the mayor. But you know, whatever. Andre weren't out there doing this. They weren't out there protecting the businesses and protecting private property in protecting people from being assaulted, etcetera, etcetera. So that fueled this desire for other people who saw a need to fill the need. And now you're saying it's so slick, cyclical that well because of stuff like this because this stuff like the situation you created. Hell, I'm not sure I want you deputized. Sheriff Beth Goodness. I I mean this, he says. Part of the problem is they create confrontation. Really? Because they walk around with guns. I only saw people standing in front of businesses. How does that create confrontation? I would think that the creation of confrontation comes with the people who are setting the fires and doing the looting. But if you want to protect those people and try to shame people for using their second Amendment right of self defense, you do you and I hope that you all realize that this is further proof that the state hates your ability to defend yourself. They hate it. He's like, Oh, yeah, you You know you're you guys probably wouldn't be too intimidated, He says it's because you're used to seeing officers with having guns. Because if I put my wife out with an air of 15 or my brother with a shotgun walking through the streets, you guys would wonder what the heck's going on. No, I wouldn't. Especially if they're carrying lawfully. How stupid do you think the people you serve Our What an indictment of the really What a smear and an impregnation of character for the people you served, Sheriff. You must be joking me here. Why he's He goes in Kenosha. We're not accustomed to rights were not accustomed to it. We're working hard. We're getting better at this. Better, really. No, like I don't. I don't think that those two officers that I saw in the Blake video were in the wrong From everything I've seen in the video. I do think that the sheriff, I don't like his remarks here. I think that they're insulting of the people that he was elected to serve. I think that it shows a complete lack of faith in the citizenry. And I'm gonna tell you something, And I hope that you elected officials really hear me if you are demonstrating and really.
