Is one of most incompetent. Presidents in the history of the United States of America, and he had harsh words to for the president's supporters who stormed the capital terrorist domestic terrorists. And that will be a judgment for the the Justice Department to make is to what charges should be. He thinks Trump bears responsibility for inciting the chaos. Different. "You know if you saw that documentary, but it shows how boys are taught not to be emotional because it's weak told Toe man up, eh? So are you saying that it's not just women in power, but men in power? We can have that feminine sensibility eye on it. The short answer is yes, Thies are qualities that anyone can bring to the table right. Like we do not have to be in Bruce list competition. We can We can be more collaborative and we can Do this work of of healing the planet driven by our both our heads and our hearts At the same time on dim fact that is the only way forward because this work is so hard and it is so heavy and the odds are so long. That we just simply need to, um, acknowledge our full humanity one we're facing, you know, a threat to all of humanity, like like we are. I'd like to think that climate one is doing that. You're the sixth host of another podcast that I've interviewed in the last year, So it's something we're trying to do is to be open and less competitive with other men. And I feel like Katherine probably has a good insight into that, too. I know that's something that she's thought of. Ah, lot, and I kind of wish you'd asked her because she has a more eloquent, probably less exhausted reply. I loved that reply. I was thinking about two things. So on your follow up question, Greg, I think you know, the other thing is that we really need Healthy masculinity, right? Not toxic masculinity but healthy masculinity. And this is something that I feel like. I've learned a lot from Sheree Mitchell, who's one of the S A s in in the collection, who has a beautiful piece in the first section, the first section's called Root and her pieces called Indigenous Wisdom and Mother Earth. Maybe indigenous prophecy and mother Earth. Sherry has taught me a lot about the need for kind of the masculine and the feminine to be in balance right to be kind of in right relationship, and we've had a really radical imbalance right where it's been way too much masculinity and masculinity that's gone and really toxic. Directions, I think even and sometimes, especially when it thinks that it's not that Andre, so part of it is finding that balance within ourselves, but certainly within the movement and within society, and the other thing I was thinking about as I Ana was talking was My own reaction to the passing of Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Just that, like raw Here's that came out about the loss of someone who really fought for us like thought for women fought for justice. Every day of her life, and that it is such an unusual thing to feel like someone is really fighting for you, and I think that's also part of what we're seeing in the changing of the guards of Political leadership. Also, I was thinking back to a conversation that I had with Aaron Bridges of the Sunrise movement about back to that. Sit in at Pelosi's office and AOC showing up both the night before and on the day and they're feeling of like, Oh, my God, This is what it feels like when someone fights with you right when UN elected official links arms and is in the work side by side. With you. And we don't have enough as opposed to Pelosi calling the green new deal the green dream or whatever, you know, can't we just all work on this together? And not like brush off other people's like barely a tease of ideas? Yeah, some shade. Patriarchy and racism was mentioned earlier and I'd like to ask I Ana I understand how systemic racism effects people of color like yourself. How does it also hurt? Privileged white men like me? Would you like a habitable planet? Yes or no? Yes, You're for it. Well, we can't have that without people of color. We just We need everyone. Do being able to do this work, right? We know that more people of color care about climate change than white people do like this is such a misconception, right this that this like, You know, the environmentalist is some white guy with a Patagonia jacket and like a Prius or whatever. It's like a volt and And backpacks all the time. But the reality is that people who care most about the environment are you. No more likely, or vote like they care more about the environment are more likely to be Latina. Grandma's in Arizona, then college students in Massachusetts, and this is according to data from Environmental voter project, and we know that you know, 49% of white people are concerned about climate change compared to 57% of black people in 69% of lot next people. So there's like a very tactical answer this question, which is like we need to dismantle white supremacy. If we want to have a chance at addressing the climate crisis with the speed and scale that's required because we need to build the biggest team, which means we should definitely reaching out to all the people who already care. Um, Meanwhile, climate din IRS are you know a single digit portion of the American population? Something like 8%, but it's mostly conservative white men. S o, you know? This is a bit glib, but I think we could probably solve the climate crisis without Racists. But we can't solve it without people of color, and I think that's important to frame it in terms of who is bringing energy towards solutions. How can we unburdened people of color with white from white supremacy and racism and police brutality and mass incarceration so that all of that energy that spent fighting for racial justice can then be directed? Towards other things that they already care about, and climate is one of those. We often talk about race and climate. As like, oh, poor people of color, getting pummeled by impacts from climate change, which is only one half of the story that is for sure, accurate. That those communities are getting the brunt of what's happening because of a history of historical marginalization and under resourced and all sorts of things that are baked in in terms of policy. And so that is one side of it. But the other side is like these are also people who have incredible ingenuity. Indians very ingenuity, toe help bring these, um, solutions forward and and so that is back to the same thing that we're Katherine started us, which is no people who are close to the problems are also close to the solutions and as a marine biologist One of the most informative moments of my career, was interviewing fisherman across the Caribbean and asking them if they could write the laws to manage the ocean. What would they be? And I learned so much from those answers. They had been thinking about this their whole lives like what would the better way look like and so asking people in communities how they would like to manage this transition to 100% renewable energy to, um you know, d carbon izing transportation to overhauling our food system to make agriculture regenerative to changing buildings.

Trump wanted Barr to clear his name on Ukraine

"We've got you covered with up to the minute reporting and analysis into this fast moving impeachment inquiry which is now set to enter a new public phase. He's in a few minutes. We'll be talking to Samantha Vinograd. CNN National Security Analyst. Who served on President Obama's National Security Council but first I'm joined by my colleague? CNN National Security Reporter. GERMY her welcome back to the podcast. Jeremy thanks for having me. It really is dizzying developments. That are that are presenting themselves. And I think it's hard for people to sort of keep it all straight but I do want to touch on a couple of development in the last several hours last twelve hours or so that have up presented themselves. And get your take about what you're hearing on the hill about what it means for the longer term inquiry. First and foremost I just I just WanNa say this. All again and impeachment agree is a political process not a legal process. I understand that but donald trump according to the Washington post was clearly concerned about the the legal side of this having. He's attorney general bill bar go out and hold a press conference. Apparently according to the post he's been talking about this in recent weeks that he wanted to go out and say Donald Trump did nothing illegal. Can I just get a gut check from you. Of course. Donald trump calls a fake news. And says it didn't can happen. I should note that but the Washington Post stands by. Its story Should I can. I just get a gut check from you on whether or not that. Matters to members of Congress on the hill weather's there was illegal activity versus unethical activity. You know it's interesting. I think that is going to be the question. That will will really take hold when we get to the Senate phase of this should the house pass articles of impeachment we've already been hearing from Senate Republicans well. Maybe this shouldn't have happened. But it's not it doesn't rise to the level of an impeachable offense and I think the idea behind this press conference remember when Muller finished his report. Who did we hear from I? It was bill bar saying effectively effectively. There was no collusion and no obstruction and that was the mantra than we heard from trump and congressional republicans. When we actually found out there was much much more to it when we saw the the redacted acted version of the full report and that Barr had shaped this whole narrative though by coming out and issuing I his letter and then a statement on the day they put out the report very successfully so absolutely early? And so I you know obviously can't get in the mind of the president but I'm guessing given the success of VAT. It would stand to reason that he thought such a similar statement at the same time coming out that they released this transcript would help him politically legally or whatever else he was trying to accomplish with it. The other thing that has emerged in the last couple of days and then more prominently again today again because of the president's twitter feed we had heard initially from Rand Paul this notion that Biden should be called to testify now. Donald Trump is tweeting. That Biden The former vice president should testify again deer hill sources indicate in any way that At least on the house side with Democrats pursuing this inquiry right now that Joe Biden's testimony is required. Here I think that's going to be a no Especially in the Democrat control impeachment inquiry now Republicans do get to request witnesses In the as we move into this phase do they get to requests witnesses before it moves to judiciary Sheree Committee. Yes they do. For the Public Intelligence Committee in fact Adam Schiff has sent a letter to the Republicans former asking them to submit a list of witnesses and their rationale now for why they want to hear from these witnesses. Of course Democrats can reject any and all of those witnesses and the majority and control the Vikings and of course if they were to pip Joe Biden on that list. I think there's zero percent chance he would actually come in the Senate. Of course were rand. Paul is a different story in that it's controlled by Republicans but I- beyond John Rand Paul and maybe a couple of others. The president's closest allies or doesn't seem to be an appetite to kind of try and turn this into a political circus. That would obviously ensue if they did try had a call. Joe Biden So I don't see it as a feasible thing yet but obviously we've seen a lot of different attempts from Republicans to gum up. The works with the process raised complaints about the process. US and we will be able to sit here probably again on the president's twitter feed why isn't aren't the Biden's being called in this inquiry Jeremy. Let's be clear. This is an impeachment. It is going to be a political circus. Focus no matter who is called to testify. But yes I I take your point about the the raw campaign politics of it. All speaking of Republicans wanted to call witnesses. This is Jim Jordan Republican congressman apparently on his list. That he's going to submit to Adam. Schiff is he wants the whistle blower the original whistle blower to come and testify. I believe he said in any way could be public. It could be private but is there any chance that the Democrats would accept that at this stage of the game. Well well for public hearing I think certainly not. We've heard obviously from Adam Schiff multiple times that they are going to do everything they can to protect the whistle blower to keep the whistle blower anonymous unless those aboard wants to be named and at this point the Democrats have indicated. They don't think that they will hear from the whistle blower and they don't need to hear from the lower. Their argument is the whistle. Blower was one who raised. Raise the alarm. who was the one who pulled the fire alarm now? They have all this other evidence from the people who were involved in this. And who have corroborated much of what the whistle blower put in complaint and so their argument is we don't actually need to hear from the whistleblower as we know didn't have first hand knowledge of this you know that doesn't Stop Republicans from trying to get him in. We've we've heard this from rip them. Repeatedly his process has gone on that wired the Democrats trying to bring the whistle blower. They said they wanted him now. They don't and what's happening with that. It's going to be it's going GonNa be another layer much like the Biden's attempts to distract and discredit this whole process from the Democrats and doesn't it seem that even if it's in private it's much more likely that the whistle blowers identity he becomes revealed if they do actually come forward in some way to provide testimony. Oh absolutely and we've seen in From the reporting Out of these depositions already that that they've been fights between Republicans and Democrats Democrats say Republicans are trying to raise name suggesting it could be the whistle blower and asking witnesses. Who are testifying whether they know so so and so or so and so and you know? It's it's certainly a point of contention and there is concern as we've seen from the press the whistle blowers attorneys that. If they were to get in a the room that they did that makes it much more likely that aired entity would be public. Jeremy now I said at the top of the show here that this is a new public phase that is about to happen and it's going to be dramatically different For the American people than what they've seen to date I mean they're going to see a open testimony public hearings. Can you sort of you talked a little bit on the process. The Republicans do get a put some suggestions for witness. Can you walk us through a little bit. About what next week is GonNa look like and what the how this process is GonNa unfold this public phase of it. Yeah this is obviously. This is the build up here because we're seeing that we've seen the transcripts from two of the three three witnesses who are coming in and were suspect. We'll get the third before next week. gives us a sense of what they're gonNA say. We Know Bill Taylor. The top diplomat in Ukraine is gonNA say he. He heard he was told that trump had directed this this whole linkage of aid for an investigation. But now obviously you're taking it to the American people. That's the goal of this is convince the American people that these are impeachable offenses. Is the Democrats goal that this was wrong and that this should not have happened. This is why we are going to impeach them Impeach Donald Trump. It's going to be spectacle You know we don't. We have impeachment inquiries for president once every two decades. Now it seems as about the time. Line And so you know it's hard to say exactly how it's how it's going to be. I'm a Republican side. They're going to add Jordan the committee. It seems that they're definitely talking about it because they want bat attack dog. They want the president's attack so I think it's going to be a very contentious very interesting and well watched affair no doubt about the well watched part I I I When you said Republicans do get to call witnesses in this phase with the intelligence committee where the joint committees? I guess But the president it doesn't get to have his council pose questions to witnesses in this stage of it correct. That's correct okay. That is something that could happen potentially and judiciary exactly exactly got it. Jeremy Thank you so much for being here
