Outreach program really has taken to account a lot of things that you wouldn't in an urban area yeah and i think at the doors to you know <hes> this may be true whether it's urban suburban or rural but you know i think think for me a big part of canvassing why i love it so much as just getting out on the doors and talking to folks and instead of me trying to sell them on something <hes> vote for me. Just just say you know what issues are important to you and you know you hear from folks that are facing some really big struggles and in a lot of these cases this this is the first time not only that democrat has knocked on their door the first time that anyone has knocked on their door a lot of these communities are just the republican we can vote is taken for granted and <hes> so they don't try my opponent. This year is the same <hes> delegate iran against in two thousand seventeen eighteen. You know he was challenged. During a special election and democrats lost pretty badly <hes> that year and then they never tried again so he's just is kind of a you know he he walks in every election he doesn't run and so we're actually challenging them in every district in the shenandoah valley valley and we're making them <hes> earned their every single vote. It's nothing is taken for granted so in making people making our delegates pay attention to the issues that matter to people in their district so when you're out talking to people what are some of the issues that are really concerning them and have you noticed any difference you know from from the last time you ran to now is the is it pretty much. The same issues are people concerned about different things i i mean in my district district twenty six. <hes> you know the alice report. The united way came out with national report in in many states across the country. Allah stands for asset limited income constrained employed in what that report showed is <hes> you know in my district strict what i have sort of intuitively known all along that many many more families are struggling than the headlines in the newspapers would would let on the incumbent that i'm ringing running against you know. "And. The upcoming weather where we're going to get down to. Baby. Eight eight seven overnight here in the Shenandoah valley in Virginia at least in some areas to the north our listeners to the door of the ring down to three easily made more snow on top of all those great. I wish we had a foot of snow. Everybody wants to. That's a good way to keep the temperatures up at the ground. Yes, it is. And I just and I'm not sure how they're going to do it. But I was looking up the forecast in York. I wanted to see data to go down to maybe three degrees, right York. And Lancaster, and how do you do a ban on commercial vehicles on all the interstates? That knee no trucks or anything because that's what they are talking about is a ban. When I looked at the weather forecast on commercial vehicles for I seventy I ninety nine two eight all the highways that looks like that's what the cost of ice and snow. Yes. And they get quite a bit. So, and I guess that's what they will concerned with but getting back to the cold weather. There are a couple of crops that can be planted in a way that you can access these crops throughout the winter one is potatoes. If you plant a late crop of potatoes sometime in July and. You know? What you can do is keep them through over the winter. And so that's what they're doing. Is. You know, you leave Minna ground. Keep over the winter, you can hill soil on top or you can use some of those heavy fabrics plots lugarda soil, and then you could access them into winter without digging them up. You could also do this which sugar beets lutts or sugar-beet is one of the favorites that we've got and so you can cover them up with cloth or soil and access and through the winter.

"And so the last locality I talk about. The book is is a little Billick farm town, which is not a distress community in the northern Shenandoah valley, which you know has a twice convicted drug dealer lands and and and they're already people who are dicta pills, and he's sort of brings heroin and Balkan. That town goes from having a handful abusers almost hundreds overnight. And so what I try to the best Ronnie Jones breath. Yeah, that's Ronnie. Yeah, I wanna I wanna get into some individuals, but I'm fascinated by this because I'm also where that that the numbers of of of Latinos and African Americans who became addicted was lower because they didn't have access to healthcare. Interesting. It's interesting that like there's a sweet spot on some level of that that that pushed this, this addiction epidemic, where there was enough money to have. Access to medical care, but not enough to really. To inhibit people like, you know, in the wealthier areas, you're not going in pretending you have a back problem to sell to your buddies or your friends who are addicted because you have enough money to do to not do that. So, yeah. So in that instance, the. Sort of like not complete poverty, but but significant enough, it seems like struggled to the middle class wasn't accelerate because the need for the money was there. But there was enough also to get initial access. Right? You thought your money protected you, but in fact, it kinda the opposite and the there's just so many unintended consequences everywhere, but the but you said like in terms of getting addicted to pills, people of color were sort of predicted by good old fashioned, racism, right doctors didn't trust them not to overuse it or they didn't have access to go to the doctor. But now you see numbers in people of color, overdoes numbers and particular because feno, especially in the mid in the urban areas in middle class, what Tino and African American men overdose deaths actually being hired because they're coming out of. Jail at a rate higher than than white people are because they're going to jail it at higher rate and many who are using who were using before because they got no treatment in jail. They come out of jail and they go back to using what they're using before only now has spent a Linnet and as as someone said, if it's raining in the white community, it's non in the black community. So they're less likely to call nine one one for police because I know trust them and they're less likely to have access to healthcare..

"Of doing this program with you and Andrei crepe myrtles were. Just, something that was starting to really become really popular with folks when we started doing. This program over twenty five years ago now you've. Got so. Many different types of crepe Myrtle and people have out there, but, we, have gotten a ton of calls this year about problems, people have, been having with. The great room yes we've come a, long way with The, creation of a better flowering and Better disease-resistant crepe myrtles Donegal really did, a lot of work with hybrid izing and we have fantastic Of crepe Myrtle but, keep in mind that Many years ago back in the early eighties I remember it was really difficult to grow crepe myrtles trees that Trump's split with the very cold weather in Shenandoah valley when we, went down to actual temperature. Sixteen below zero it damaged the crepe, myrtles now last year we had a drought, and then this past winter We had, issues with crepe Myrtle and plus, the crepe Myrtle did not have the. Normal leaf drop like they normally do so they may have stayed in more of a growing condition later in the winter and you know. One of the leading questions is, probably we've had more questions on crepe, Myrtle dieback than non blooming hydrangea which is quite common for. Us but crepe myrtles are easy to grow and I. Guess the thing you need to keep in mind is there are a wide variety of different types according to, height and shape some are like maybe two feet then you might have some that affordable then you might have some that is seven to twelve feet then you have some that, it's twelve to seventeen feet. Then, you got seventeen to twenty two, feet all the way up Where they can get, quite tall key is do not plant a crepe Myrtle that. Gets too big for the area that you want it. In or you'll have to continuously pruned them again and again and I was looking and. I can't find the source, and I know I have it someplace but crepe myrtles also have different bloom periods in. Not only different blooming periods different lengths of blooming and there was a really good website I haven't found it. Yet but, it Explain that some. Crepe myrtles produce new buds on the same flower again and again and Achim bloom for. Months at, a time so there's been a lot of work with not only the colors. Of great Merle but also with the length of blooming times and some actually re bloom, you have the ability to create crepe Myrtle shrubs or crepe Myrtle trees with, multiple trunks and again. The real key is don't plant one. That gets too big in, your area The best time to prune we find, and especially this year is. Not until may and in fact this coming week I'm going to do a TV segment. With Virginia, farm bureau on a crepe Myrtle how to prune them and went to program Determine if the main trunks are dead Dead or alive I'll be doing that, with Dave Miller this, coming a week and that'll. Be airing shortly and you'll have the opportunity to see two different types and how to prune them, and so forth Some of them I hardy varieties again a lot of us a looking for, heartier types ones that can withstand the winters that we've had lately of course natch as out of all the crepe myrtles natch as which. Is a white crepe Myrtle is probably the hardest and it has, the prettiest exfoliating bark almost like the, clues or Chinese. Dogwood SU is an is a beautiful, pink and not too, tall I'm gonna guess if. You can get fifteen to twenty feet tall but it does take pruning quite well beautiful pink tanto And dynamite in Muskogee now dynamite does not get that big I. Think it's a little hardier than red rocket so dynamite works Whitewell, in the garden for one that's not, too tall and You can plant them. In full sun one of the reasons, they sometimes don't bloom well is, they just don't get enough Sun City do like son in addition to the heights some. Tend to be more weeping I just got back from North Carolina. And, as I was. Driving back I was looking at the different shapes of the crepe myrtles some, will weeping somewhat upright so there's. A wide variety of crepe myrtles that you can grow now keep in mind crepe myrtles can handle. A variety of soils and down duck at the beach seven hundred, feet off the water we have crepe myrtles growing in almost pure sand and they. Don't, get any rain except natural Ray. Now we'll tell you they've had a lot of. Rain this year but crepe myrtles will grow in areas that are very sandy And again you want to give them a little. Room don't plant them to post together and another plant that did, wow and I notice at at the house is Calcutta Calcutta We've tested many different plants. In. Pure saying and calico operas also known as you bury This plant. Look fantastic and it has beautiful purple berries so not only. Can you grow right Bartle. You can grow calico or beauty berry and is purple beauty berries is white UD berries and But, it's a beautiful plant that you can also. Use an garden at the same time with your crepe myrtles and calico blooms on new would so you would prune it in the spring but. Again pick the right plant for the right location the best time to prune is when the new growth has. Started and you're pretty comfortable with what parts are alive and what. Parts are not now I'll, tell you it'd be great if we can figure out how to use them as a cut. Flower every time I've tried to use them as? A cut flower date the flowers, just, fall off, but maybe one day someone will figure that out. And how to use them. As a coupla does it really matter how you elect to utilize because. We do get some folks trees shrubs bushes things, like that does one grow better than another they all. Grow quite well it's just important that you. Put the right one in the right place if you put. One of the taller growing. Trees Close to the house you're going to have to really DeAnne and call sometimes crepe murder and. That's you don't have to.
