The Enigmatic Genius of Robert E. Lee

"Our final question concerns the enigmatic genius of Robert E. Lee. Listen. A high dinesh, I just listened to your episode one 29 in which you stated that you thought that Robert E. Lee was one of the best journals of all time. I wanted to bring your attention to a book called lost victories the military genius of Stonewall Jackson by Bevin Alexander. He makes a compelling argument that Stonewall Jackson while he was in the Shenandoah campaign. He separately fought three different union armies and defeated all three of them, and then he joined Robert E. Lee's staff and Robert Lee hadn't doing too good before that. But he was really impressed with Stonewall Jackson and listened to his counsel and followed his advice, and that's where all the victories came from. So I really it's just a well researched excellent written book and I hope you have time to take a look at it. Take care. This is fascinating. And my answer is not really going to disagree so much is to try to fill out the argument that I think you're making. A couple of words about Stonewall Jackson. Stonewall Jackson, this is, by the way, general Joseph Jackson, a great military tactician, a strange man, apparently he was highly superstitious he believed that when he wrote a horse, he needed to keep his keep one of his arms outstretched to the side in order to sort of maintain his spiritual balance. He was unrelenting, he was merciless. He was once asked, what should we do with the Yankees and his answer was kill them all, kill them all. And he inspired unswerving military loyalty from his troops, he would send people to into grave danger and in some cases almost certain death, and they would, without questioning his orders, carry them out. So this was obviously a very charismatic man and, as you say, in the Shenandoah valley, he was able to move from point to point, take on different segments of the Union Army thrashed them and move to another spot and do exactly the same thing. And you also write that Robert E. Lee saw him as indispensable when stonewalling Jackson was eventually killed. I believe Robert E. Lee said literally something to the effect of I've lost my. I've lost my right arm. So all of this I think is true, and it raises the question of where then is the military genius of Robert E. Lee? Well, part of it is you actually pointed out yourself when you said that Lee recognized the tactical wisdom of Stonewall Jackson. Remember, that's part of what a general

"I must admit to being exhausted. The last four years has taken a massive psychological and emotional toll that i'm only now just beginning to appreciate truthfully the struggle to keep hope that this day would arrive of alluded me the good news that we now have the opportunity to reignite democracy civility truth and move towards healing both our country and the earth. We've gone so far backwards that we need to move forward with deliberate tangible and bold steps one of the voices calling for such a revolution in thinking and action is dr mark. Hyman mark is a systems thinker and for dr. Hyman health is about connecting the soil with the farmer with the groza without diet and only when we connect all those dots. Can we begin to achieve planetary regeneration. As we'll hear in today's podcast what is truly staggering is the cost of today's broken food system. In which sixty percent of our calories in the us come in the form of ultra processed food. Dr mark hyman is head of strategy and innovation of the cleveland clinic center for functional medicine. He's the founder and director of the ultra wellness center and the board president of clinical affairs for the institute of functional medicine. Mark hosts one of the leading health. Podcast the doctors pharmacies spelled f. a. a. c. y. Pham esi marcus. The thirteen time. New york best seller author. His most recent book is called food. Fix how to save our health our economy our communities and our planet one bite. At a time i sought by ascii mark. How he got into medicine in the first place. Ming doctor was a total afterthought for me buddhist student in college. I studied buddhism. Asian studies chinese. I studied ecology. The environment systems thinking ancient systems of healing. Very eclectic and i decided after i graduated. But what am. I going do with a degree in buddhism so i took a long hike by myself in the shenandoah valley through my backpack brought a copy of moby dick. Because it was a very thick books. I could carry and read house before kindle and I just walked and thought and just kind of thought about what i wanted to do in the buddhist framework is really about healing. It's a it's a healing system. It's not really a religion it's really a system of healing of the mind and it's about the relief of suffering it's about compassion and love and service and and those were things that really called to me as a young man and i thought well. What could i do. That kind of fits all that. I could be a monk. That didn't sound like a lot of fun. But i decided i could be a doctor and it was a total afterthought i just i didn't have any science courses. I had to go back. And take some pre med courses and ended up loving. And i decided i would just keep doing as long as i liked it. And if i didn't like it anymore. I would stop and so far so good thirty years later. I mean that's great advice for anyone thinking about people. Ask me career advice. I say that like if you enjoy it if it fills you keep doing it and if it doesn't maybe think about stopping it exactly exactly chain. I've changed so many things i've been you know a small town country doctrine idaho and a native american reservation. Emergency room doctor started clinics in china ex patriots. I was the medical director. Kanye ranch i developed my own. Practice started writing books and teaching About functional medicine became the faculty of functional medicine institute and direct and the chairman of it started big center for functional medicine at cleveland clinic. And now i'm sort of moving into a different phase of thinking about how do we deal with the intersecting issues of food and health and agriculture environment which all may seem separate but are actually all one problem and if we want to solve one we have to solve them all to before we end that. What is functional medicine. What does that mean. That joke is the opposite of dysfunctional medicine. Which is what we have now. As essentially a system of thinking it's not a methodology or treatment or attests supplement is is essentially a way of thinking about disease based on systems. It's it's base c ecosystem medicine. You understand that that the environment is an ecosystem and that everything has to be imbalanced in nature. For to thrive and in madison we really created a reductionist model that allows us to focus on diseases and symptoms in drugs to target those symptoms and not really understand what is health. We never took the course in medical school. Creating a healthy human wanna one. You know we we basically learn how to diagnose and diseases functional. Medicine is the science creating health. And when you do that does goes away. The side effect if you create a healthy ecosystem for example on a farm or a natural ecosystem it becomes. Resilient disease doesn't occur.

You know, that's where the best art comes for honest when you're very limited with what you have to work with, and the horror genre, I think was kind of dictator by our budget. Because I knew we could go out into the woods and film a self contained story. The entire thing was shot for just 500 bucks. I took a page From Manuel Lubetzky is work in the Revenant. "Today at P. M. dot gov slash U. S. A. learning Jack take the WTOP traffic Chuck bell this has been one wet morning it sure has sort of like the the the song lyrics in no way no sunshine when she is gone he's always gone too long the same thing the no sunshine at all for us probably until Friday so I hope you enjoyed it over the weekend still solid cloud cover outside quite a bit of rain across the region as well steady as to the rain is from the Washington area south bound towards Fredericksburg in southern Maryland but everybody has puddles on the sidewalks this afternoon this morning temperatures are in the mid forties in the Shenandoah Valley low fifties around town the gradual trend is for these temperatures to move ever upwards during the day even without any sunshine well I'm forecasting fifty seven for a high in and around Washington today the status of the rain will gradually come to an end by early this afternoon no sunshine of course but I think that the evening commute and into your evening activities not quite so rainy it'll say just cloudy and mostly rain free overnight it'll turn colder as a very weak cold front slides just down to our south so you'll start off tomorrow cloudy with a northwest breeze and temperatures in the upper thirties to around forty staying above freezing so no ice or snow threat and then tomorrow temperatures will stay in the mid to upper forties all afternoon full cloud cover and rain becomes more likely again by later in the day tomorrow so not a total washout but still a seventy eighty percent chance for rain that rain chance continues on into the first half of your Thursday we should start to dry out again later in the day Thursday but still under full cloud cover and Thursday is going to be mild to with temperatures up into the low sixties for a brief time colder air does come back with the return of sunshine for Friday and for Saturday those days will be colder than average the first time that's happened in quite awhile all indications are towards the end of the month this will end up being one of the five warmest February on record I'm storm team four meteorologist Jeff bell for WTOP thank you Jack and outside of our studio windows here the rain really is coming down and it's fifty degrees brought to you by land the plumber trusted same day service at in days a week nine twenty two now the parents of a black college student who was stabbed to death at the university of Maryland will urge lawmakers to strengthen the state's hate crime law into Richard Collins the third I sent to attend a news conference.

"Your recovery visit Hopkins proton dot org I'm reading Kessler WTOP traffic another warmest day forcing Chuck bell has our forecast eight Jack Hey good morning after thick clouds and rain drops earlier today most that rain now is on the eastern side of the Potomac into southern Maryland and headed for the bay we have a little respite in the rain drops coming for the next few hours don't plan on a lot of sunshine today but you might get a little five minute burst of blue sky hi before the clouds roll back in and rain chances return later on in the day but we have a several dry hours in front of us and they will be mild ours as well temperatures are still above sixty degrees through most of the Shenandoah Valley right now the DC metro areas in the low fifties but with the brightening sky and the lack of rainfall I do think most of the measure will get back up to about sixty two for a high today before temperatures trend back with the return of rain drops for the evening hours off and on rain overnight temperatures in the upper forties up to around fifty degrees by early tomorrow morning temperatures will fall steadily during the day tomorrow so tomorrow's high will occur by before sunrise around fifty and then our low will happen well after dark in the upper thirties and late tomorrow night into early Thursday morning parts of the region northern Maryland in the Shenandoah Valley could have a little bit of a chance for some freezing rain in around the Washington area this will all be a hundred percent rain drops and I think even in the center of our this is going to be more of a mess than a hit from a freezing rain chance we're just sort of getting the word out now so that you're not caught off guard by Thursday temperatures will rapidly climb we'll be back in the upper fifties to near sixty by Thursday afternoon even after that little ice threaten the morning and heavy duty rain coming our way Thursday night one to two inches of rain possible in the overnight hours and that could be a bit of a flooding concerns so we'll have a strong team for weather alert Fauria from tomorrow evening until probably about noon time on Friday for which I'm very heavy rain Thursday night the ranger down by about lunch on Friday might get a little bit of sunshine late in the afternoon Friday but Saturday looks to be our next trip next best chance to see sunshine I'm storm team four meteorologist Chuck bell for WTOP okay check nine fifty two now the US news special report the.

"And Virginia he was released in nineteen fifty three after two years of service and he we were married and moved to Minnesota where he is from but at the present time I'm living in the Shenandoah Valley in Newmarket Virginia he was having a problem with his mitral valve leaking and you came here to have a procedure done that's called a microphone clip and it was successful in a way but gradually it started leaking again and when he had that sixty it was in December and we were here for a couple of weeks at the Fisher house and we were really spy on December fifteenth and gradually through these preceding months he got worse and worse as far as the valves leaking and so he came here a month ago to have open heart surgery to repair his the valve in his heart he has had some complications from his surgery we have been here it's five weeks I think today he's progressing now doing better and so we're looking forward to when he can go home that surely Stephens describing the Stephens family military story and what the Fisher house has meant to them it's been a real comfort because we're from we live in the country and the traffic here would be so difficult to find a motel and then to be able to afford a motel after you found it we have had food here you can it's so many things they've given us.
