Senate Republicans Release $928 Billion Infrastructure Counteroffer

"Biden's infrastructure plan because responding Clayton Devil says proposed spending continues to be the main hold up. GOP senators introduced a $928 billion counteroffer to President Biden's $1.7 trillion plan. His initial proposal was well upward of two trillion The Republican plan includes money for roads and bridges for airports, water systems, public transit in broadband. It sticks to the core infrastructure features that we talked to initially It's a serious effort to try to reach a bipartisan agreement, Senator Shelley Moore Capito said The biggest question right now seems to be over the gap and propose spending, but she intends to keep negotiating the alternative. Which is a partisan reconciliation process would be destructive to our future bipartisan attempts but also doesn't serve the American public Republicans pushing back against proposed tax hikes and plan to repurpose billions of unspent covert relief money to help pay for infrastructure projects. Witnesses "would not have made a difference" in Trump trial

"Are defending their strategy in the trial of former President Donald Trump. Despite yesterday's acquittal as NPR's Barbara Sprint reports, the Democratic lawmakers say pursuing witnesses would not have changed the outcome. A surprise Senate vote to allow witnesses threatened to up end the speedy trial members on both sides of the aisle were anticipating. But managers and Trump's defense reached a deal to not add witnesses but instead allow a statement from Congresswoman Jamie Herrera Butler to be read into the record lead. Impeachment manager Jamie Raskin told NBC's Meet the press. He has no regrets. We could've had 1000 witnesses, but that could not have overcome the kinds of silly arguments that People like McConnell and capital were hanging their hats on. Republican senators Mitch McConnell and Shelley Moore Capito both cited constitutional concerns in their vote to acquit the former president. Barbara Sprint.

"It would have been Tuesday night in the Oval Office speech. So how does this resolve because we have Mitch McConnell who in it? You know, like, I've got a list here of it fascinating of of who's up for re election in the Senate in twenty twenty and. There's a lot of Republicans all four of the Republicans who we have heard most of right Shelley Moore Capito in West Virginia. We've heard from Joni Ernst in Iowa we've heard obviously from Collins in Maine, the only of Cory Gardner in Colorado who's who's could be in big trouble. Because of this. The only Republican we've heard from that is not a free election is. Mcaliskey in in in Alaska and. They are afraid that they're going to lose. Because this is I mean, we are right on the cusp it becoming you know, severe right? I mean, right at one point. We we are now just at the point where they're not getting a paid. We're seeing now in Miami. They're shutting down a terminal for a couple of days because TSA people are starting to leave. We're starting to see stuff like loans to farmers not go through it is like right now, we're on the precipice. I think of falling off a cliff that is going to be very painful, particularly these senators are going are you going to start feeling the pressure at the same time? You have this opposite force on Mitch McConnell, which is if he allows a vote and undercuts Donald Trump Trump attacks him, then Mark Levin, and Sean Hannity, and and they all attack him in the way that he was attacked in two thousand sixteen..

"Of losing, their food stamps and thousands more people who might be housing tenants the face eviction without assistance from the department of housing his any of that kind of thinking as far as you can tell factoring into how the Republic. Tackling this crisis. I think that kind of thing is increasingly pressing on the minds of Republican senators, especially Republican senators from states that might be up for grabs in the twenty twenty presidential and senatorial election people like Susan Collins and Shelley Moore Capito of West Virginia have indicated that there they'd be willing to reopen the government or at least vote for a Bill to reopen. The government, of course, you'd need. If Trump threatened to veto it you'd need two thirds of the house and two thirds of the Senate. So a significant number of both Republicans and Democrats willing to pass a Bill over the president's veto. I don't know that many Republicans certainly there are some who are immigration hardliners and support to the hill the president's call for a wall. But I think the this sort of median Republican member of congress probably wants to put this behind them and have some kind of negotiation in the future about a wall. Rather than holding the the the? The increasing sort of number of Americans impacted by this shutdown at ransom in order to provide for it. But willingness to buck the leader of the party, even in the in the immediate wake of a fairly unsuccessful election. I think is still pretty hard to come by just very quickly. And finally on this Jacob shortly after the mid terms there was some people who thought that Trump came out. Okay. That election and others who who thought differently is this proof the haves that. In fact, the Trump presidency is now in quite unfamiliar territory one which that it might not actually know how to navigate. Yeah. I think that's a pretty fair read. I mean, Trump has not done any kind of elected office before he's not being an elected leader is new to him and the entire context that he has for it was a United government under Republican leadership in the house and Senate. So this is a very new set of operating principles for him and the people around him by and large are not people with a huge amount of government experience. Either Mick Mulvaney. The new chief of staff hasn't really worked with a divided government. Well, he he's been a number of Republican House. He's never seen a democratic house as a as a member. "And it's interesting point but you know in one sentence something important then and since may this effort by the republicans to kill obamacare me before the cbo score came out showing the twenty two million people were going to lose their health insurance from this thing senator dean heller of nevada had already said no to the bill assumes that score came out susan collins said she would be a no vote as well those were already all the votes they could spare and still pass this thing but it turned out those were not all the votes there were going to lose a bunch of other senator started to say no rand paul ted cruz ron johnson mike lee all talk publicly about opposing it and then more came out today and said they would oppose it after the vote was after the vote was pulled so senate republican leaders today linked it as i say they they continue to lose more republican support after they yanked it today shelley moore capito of west virginia last night we highlighted the protests going on across west virginia outside her offices inside her offices shelley moore capito said today she is now a no vote rob portman of ohio as also been the focus of anti trump care save the aca protests rob portman also came out and said no against this bill today jerry moran from kansas he was not on the dc radar in terms of being a potential no vote against this bill but you know what people in kansas who have jerry marin as their senator they have been letting him know what they think on this subject and jerry marin surprised everybody by also coming out against this bill today when the republicans.

"Uh we are seeing a frontal assault on a whole range of progressive issues i mean healthcare's the tip of the spear vet budget tax everything what's happening on foreign policy safer us we're you know we're focused on stopping as much of the can of legislative assault as we can and i do think that the energy in the that there's incredible energy in the country in which really important is to bring that energy into the debate so we spent a lot of time we've spent a lot of time over the last couple of weeks months trying to a get people who are concerned uh but like live in their communities to go to town halls or go call the members of congress now and i actually think what are the reason why mitch mcconnell's kept a secret for so long is he's worried about direct democracy taking on this bill and because it will have huge consequences for people and it's the people i was like oh people just don't like trump or the resisting in his people are flooding these town halls are people who are worried about losing their healthcare the friends and family of preexisting conditions and they're all you know energized by let this bill will do to them and so um that's where i think the energy is now it is a feedback loop there's energy out in the country but if you can get them to call their member of congress we decides great uh bestlaid of indivisible folks who organized from west virginia they write a whole slew of people and shelley moore capito met with them um as did center mansion and they both have talked about with their commitments were on this bill which hopefully would be actually realizes it hello the vote um so uh i see the activism out there but as as as we're really the energy in future of progressive politics is but i think we can play an important role in reminding people that is not twenty eight is not just twenty eighteen that you can defeat trump uh where you know it's important for people to vote but there is really critical issues that will affect people uh fundamentally that are that the congress is dealing with now.

"Who have voted for shelley moore capito whose tax payers whose tax dollars pay her salary will die if this bill passes i mean and in that sounds hyperbolic and in dramatic but it is a actual fact and into for her or rob portman similar situation for those people to vote for this so that they will because they were afraid of trump's twitter account for some breitbart headlines earth the wrath of insane sean hannity rant is deeply worrying for democracy absolutely i mean i saw something the other day that in southwest l hayel ten thousand people will die this year from opioid overdose how i mean on the one hand i think that you know those senators have to actually reveal how bad their states are they have to be really honest and say we can't vote for this bill because your neighbors are going to die you know this every one on this street is going to lose any sort of support or you know rehab or anything the date that they get from medicaid and the hospitals and all that and so i don't i mean if you were them what would you do what would you say how would you if you knew in your heart how can portman not know in his heart the he can't vote for this how do you how do you thread that needle with your supporters who voted for trump n thing and thought that they were going to help them this bill does not help them and so you know the really sort of like dark side of me i was talking to some of my girlfriend's yesterday a mike let them let the republicans walk off a cliff let americans see exactly what the fuck they voted for an but that's i mean that's so awful because so many people are going to be hurt people who voted for trump and people who didn't vote for trump um because they actually voted for someone who gave no material details odd during his campaign of what he was actually going to do except make america great again you know i very wary of people who served two thrids of through discussion among progressives among people on twitter that i find disturbing one is.
