"Instance. You really need to adjust your material and pacing and everything. Thanks, fedor Despite being universal laughter is a bit like a language. It doesn't always translate. And it sounds like I need to tweak my material to be a better cultural fit. The British people, just the idea of going on a naked retreat with your colleague, is sufficiently horrifying that it causes people to snigger. But for the Dutch who are, I think it's fair to say less prudish than us spritz, it might not have the same effect. Before taking to the stage again, I checked in with neuroscientist shelia to see if she has any last minute advice. I think the brain science really speaks to this notion of timing and jokes. So the basically the rate at which you speak when you tell the joke for the different audiences. So if you're audience is very inebriated, they may be slower processors than a group of people who are stone cold sober and the top of the morning, maybe a work function. Also, how quickly people are processing information might you could change up how quickly you tell the joke. And not just joke timing, but also, just like in first dates and job interviews, first impressions really matter. A group at Harvard measured video they videotaped the instructor the first ten seconds of class. They correlated the students perceived warrant the perceived warmth of the video from naive raiders. They're not in the class. They just look at the video and say, how warm does this person see? Those warmth ratings correlated with the student's course evaluations at the end of the semester. Just ten seconds at the beginning of class. Thanks, shelia. So I've got just ten seconds to win the crowd over The pressure is on. Here goes. Steel. So I'm Caroline steel. Name

"Yeah and that's definitely something that we're going to get into towards the end of this chat. But i wanna look at the early stages of pregnancy so a new term that i came across in this report that i had never heard of is cold reproductive coercion. Can you explain what this is and the factors that contribute to reproductive coercion. Yeah that's right a on reproductive coercion kind of emerging area at the moment within I guess the prevention of violence against women spice and reproductive coercion can be anything that limit i- person's autonomy to practice their reproductive autonomy so it can be that Pepetrators Forcing women to either terminate pregnancies or have pregnancies Could be that interfering with Methods of contraception. It can be that the influencing or coalescing them into either not taking countries that all taking contraception with the view to either not get pregnant or get pregnant and so when we look at reproductive coercion. We also look at it. We brought a structural terms as well to consider what might be happening for migrant and refugee women who experienced structural foams have reproductive coercion. For various reasons they might not be able to access Services like a abortion kissed emphasis because of cost and so we really think that that could also be a form of reproductive coercion as well and reproductive coercion as you mentioned is a form of family violence and as we know family. Violence is a universal problem. As i was reading the report so the figures is just like really alarming. Blew my mind. Serb iran. thirty five percent of women around the world experienced some form of intimate partner violence in shelia. That number is one in three that full migrant and refugee women this issue is compounded further by migration related processes. Not many people are familiar with that term. Can you explain what we mean when we say migration belated processes. You're absolutely so again. I guess the migration system itself can increase migrant and refugee women's vulnerability to violent women on temporary vases or newly-arrived women con excess government support services. And so because of financial insecurity they might choose to stay in violent relationships. And there's also the issue of social isolation lack of culturally appropriate services And perpetrators may use their partners insecure. These studies too many delight and control their partners and force them to stay they migration related processes really looks at how the system can rain. Full will support the violent behaviors that increases women's dependency on their partners. As you mentioned earlier international students I one of the groups that face lower health outcomes. Can you explain why that is an ulcer. They supported by like things like medicare..

"Six eggs at a time. You can get even bigger one if you want but what it does is it. Pokes a tiny little hole in the egg. All and you put it in this like trey and you dump water in there in accordance to how you want your eggs turn out and it doesn't hard boil them it like steams them and the middle is like bright orange and it's fucking awesome. Buying that right now is this. Yeah what's that thing called so all this just the double cooker rapid broiler. That's that's it bella. One seven to nine hundred twenty bucks. I'm getting that right now. Yeah that's amazing. It's amazing. Ill ill change your life. Especially if you're somebody who's like a hardball disgusting. Yeah you will. You will not think hard boiled eggs are discussing. you'll you'll have to put salt and seasoning on them of course because they are but is it a pain in the balls to crack. Open the shells now. No it doesn't oh to peel the shelia now so it's actually easier to pull the shell off as well. That's the only thing out prevents me from. It's not super easy to do that. But what's recommended is that you let your eggs rest for a little bit so there is a little bit of tie. It can be a little time consuming. It only takes seven minutes. Cook the cook it kinda. Does everything automatically. You can kind of let it. Just sit there and forget it but you're better off paying attention to it and taking it back out. Yeah you can see all the video of it right there Oh yeah does a bunch of other shit too. You can kind of do your eggs like adm and shit like that. Yeah i was going to ask about the shakes. You just my life. Is ooh poach so. That looks good. Oh my god see guys men. We can look at that omelette. Wow this is amazing. What's that thing that she put it.

"Quickly. And i'm i'm big physically and played bantam. Aa and and very competitive legs of kenya chuck went seventh overall. That year. jim benning was the year before nine hundred one. Just that's just the name a few guys that were just real good players in edmonton growing up in minor hockey so there was a lot of competition but from w midget while your rights are owned by junior team was the great falls americans at the time. No draft or anything. They just kinda snag you. When you're fifteen. Fourteen years old eight. You belong to us. The big team was the portland. Winter hawks with gary nyland and kenya ram in my era and guys along those lines and So great falls now. This is a bad team too. I just bad team seem to follow me for whatever reason. But they snagged me and again opportunity and they called me up and say we'd like to skip midget go right to tier two hockey. We're affiliated with a team. Called the tears and the scotsman junior hockey league and my mother says over my dead body are leaving at fifteen years old. I know times are a little different back then. 'cause i know in today's day and age i would have never let my fifteen year. Old kid grow so young to leave home. It was five hundred miles away. My dad was born and raised in germany. More of a soccer guy came to candidate. Twenty two years old learned to love the game but but didn't know a whole lot about it but he was just support of amana. Few words still living hanging in there at ninety years old. So i wanna go see him soon because canada travel or unprecedent times and covert and the travel crap so anyway but he was just one of those guys that took me those early morning practices support. I mean not that pushy parents whatsoever. He just saw the passionate for the game. So when this time came to make. I had two days. I had a weekend to say. The coach is going to pick you up if you're interested in going on monday at a gas station and drive you to york and five hundred miles. And the coach's name and he's passed into jerry bullets and just wonderful man. So my dad goes. What do you want to do so dad. Well i've said. I'm going to play in the national hockey league for fifty times a day ten times a day. Whatever it may be seven years old. So i think this is probably the best thing for for me to pursue. I'm willing to go to york. Then you guys get homesick. Whatever it took. i'm next up. I don't care. I said there's a problem you know. Mom's not going to be too happy with this decision. Fact she's probably gonna try to squash and say no way. My dad goes listen. I'm gonna drive to the gas station true story on monday. We're not going to tell your mother with. He says i'll deal with her. Because i don't wanna tell her right now and it's going to be too much shit shelia just we're just gonna leave and we're gonna exactly. Why gave her a hug. But my wife is didn't know was going on. I get picked up by jay bilas drive to york and and obviously i have a couple of weeks. My mom got over. My dad said lo explained the whole story. He's told you since seven years old. He's gonna play nationally if this is the path. He thinks it's going to take. Let's do it now. Going to york then as a fifteen year old kid. I was one of two fifteen year olds in league at the time. It was a manager league match seventeen to eighteen nineteen year olds. That's that's a big discrepancy guys. Know so was. Survival of the fittest. This is in the late. Seventy s this is not that far from slapshot this league and that's not an exaggeration. We we all love that movie right. We all get laughs and and look at the way the game was played back then and the craziness. Yeah there was law. Great players. Chris chelios came from that league with the moose jaw. Warriors played against him. Dave tippett the coach of the islanders are the oilers and and i could go on with names but also the likes daybreak. Joe kosher came out of the sketch g. league so i guess you know where i'm headed so it was survival of his. I'm on a young team in york. Ten fifteen years old and i'm a baby quickly. Two hundred pounds or you. What's your this is all. i'm. I'm one ninety big enough to defend yourself but but still squirrelly enough to understand that this is what it's gonna take nervous as all hell at times going into certain games. 'cause we we'd be playing you know. We had we a lot of seventy dollars. A lot of teams had nineteen year olds in eighteen year olds and melville millionaires. Were our big rival twenty minutes up the road. We were the interiors. They're coached by jerry. James and we swear at times we drive up there and they they brought four guys right out of prison just to play against us you know and like i said as much as it was too big full beards and fifteen kindergarten would get myself into. They had guys that would skate. All the way to our blue line wouldn't let we'd have to warm up from the blue line and they had a guy sit on our net wants during. I mean i go on like well. You already committed because you told them back home you're gonna make the nhl. You're the fuck that i sign up or here. I was part committed. There's no question about it. Sixty game season so i'm going to high school there as well. I after after school play melville. There'd be twelve guys in the bus. Where's everybody oh. Didn't you know it's called the blue flu. They don't come to. This game only sounds crazy. Sounds farfetched true story. I'm going so we're going into melville with twelve guys. You know he goes okay and by the way. We're probably going to have sixty to seventy players this year because guys go home. Sicker can't handle the league. It's just too too nasty to physical too much fighting too much craziness grade. I'm just sitting there as young. This is great. I'm rolling with the punches. We had wendel. Clark's another way too. Young don clark who i lived with. He was a seventeen year old. Who the captain of our team. Just a just a great guy.

We don't have that many black farmers but those who are in it are really sincere about it. You know they want to really play a part into this food production business. It just sounds like such such an important thing to to help. People return to the land that wanted to an feels like in california this pretty big challenges around the cost of the land. The water like helping people get back to the land that want to feels like a really important thing to do. It is real important thing to do. But the cost factor. I didn't want to go in debt. What makes us strong matter of fact. That's what made you say stone. You know which is good. You know because then you have a way of selection things that are really good for your system to that promise that was made by the government of forty acres to do feel like that should still. Is that something that could still come to pass today. Like there's a whole discussion about reparations. But the promise of forty acres was made and never really met in this me. Personal is when you talk about reparation you know. How do you put money value on that. You know really what has happened to the black american is country area. I don't think you can really put a value on it Having said that the for the exam you you know that would have been a tremendous star for a lot of people who had nothing you know. They could a bill from that in some some. they'll be from his absolute people in modernization. That they're the land eight of because they got you know they still have you. No matter of fact even have moorland. You know what i think today as we talk about reparation when you're talking about the black former justice active they put it put into effect. You know is that it really scares a lot of people because you think that you'll giving people something for nothing in reality. Radio is kind of way of saying that..

"Needed his french troops back so chaz array returned home to a hero's welcome. His father showered him with honors and titles. The timing was almost too perfect. The year fifteen hundred was already declared a special jubilee by alexander now he was able to couple it with his sons military conquests. Unfortunately the good times rarely lasted in the scheming world of rome in the summer lucrative and her husband alfonso duke of shelia arrived at the city to enjoy the jubilee festivities. Almost immediately trouble came calling on the evening of july fifteenth. Alfonso attended a dinner with alexander at the vatican and by all accounts had a pleasant time however on his walk home. A gang of men attacked alphonso. Outside saint peter's basilica. The duke survived and was taken to the vatican to recover for a time. But then a month later an assassin andrew del phone so's chambers and strangled him to death. Unfortunately this was just the beginning of the tragedy. The assassin was quickly. Found to be micheletto. Kerala one of chesser as most trusted lieutenants who also earned the reputation as resumes executioner. It seems almost certain that array ordered the murder of his brother-in-law and all of rome new it. But why the most likely reason is the pope alexander as a borja felt that the duke was no longer useful to them with alphonso gone and eventual vatican supported. French invasion of naples would be less complicated for the barges and king louis practically confirming this theory the fact that not even two weeks after the assassination louis seems to have sent chesney array. A thank you gift. Nearly eight thousand men to continue. His conquest of the romagna region alexander's role in all of this bankrolling his sons adventures. According to historian g j meyer alexander redirected the papal treasury to make sure chaser array had the funds to pay his men. And when cash was tight alexander's sold seats in the college of cardinals. Selling red. hat's served multiple purposes. It gave chesney money. It's shored up support among the college and because some of the new cardinals came from spain. It offset any spanish animosity over alexander's alliance with france. Normally such corruption would draw the ire of the other cardinals. However by now pope alexander had grown so powerful that all they could do was watch and wait for the old man to die for the next two years chaser and his army. Sporadically campaigned throughout romagna. Taking towns and cities left and right eventually pope alexander officially named shazia array the duke of romagna in doing so he established for the first time a duchy to be ruled by a borja. It might not be in their homeland in spain. But alexander was submitting the borgia dynasty with actual lands and titles however during these campaigns chaser as reputation for ruthlessness and duplicity got worse and worse in fifteen o to several of his condo. Cherry italian captains who commanded mercenaries feared that jazeera would turn on them among them were members of the orsini family and they realized that perhaps they should rid themselves of chaser a before. It was too late throughout the full of fifteen o to the cabal of conduct teary. Either stage revolts or turned entirely on chaser as forces causing jazeera to lose several major cities. Realizing he had been betrayed and was in danger chaser a barricaded him and his most loyal men in imola and waited in rome. Pope alexander grew worried. For over two years he and chase array had gone to great lengths to secure land for the nascent borgia dynasty but now a bunch of clowns threatened that they built hsun however the cabal revealed itself to be a confederacy of dunces constantly. Bickering amongst themselves. At the same time several began to fear that louis and his french army would arrive to rescue chaser it conspirators resolve withered and one by one they all shouted may culpa. Many cut deals with chaser a with hopes of complete reconciliation treasury claim. That all was forgiven. Because now he could turn his attention back to conquering new territory. He wasn't interested in wasting time on frivolous infighting or so he said. But of course there's a reason why machiavelli modeled prince after chaser borja on january first fifteen. Oh three months after the quote unquote reconciliation chair as executioner micheletto strangled two of the conspirators with a violin. Wire at the same time. Three of the orsini suddenly found themselves in chains in rome pope. Alexander ordered the arrests of any and all members of the orsini family even nor seaney cardinal was arrested and stripped of his wealth. The war against the orsini didn't last long by april chaser. Ray had conquered and killed enough of them that even king louis urged the borjas to simmer down. Chaser acquiesced much to alexander's disappointment. He wanted them all dead but alexander couldn't stay too mad at his son. After all with the rebellion quelled chaser could turn his attention towards another military campaign to amass borja territory on august fifth. Hope alexander attended a garden party. Send off for his son. Chase ray summers in italy. Were always suffocatingly hot. But that evening seemed especially so in fact the first things father and son asked their host for was wind quench their thirst. Over the next week alexander chaser eight the host and the servants all fell violently ill while the others slowly but surely recovered. The pope's condition quickly deteriorated. Doctors attempted the tried and true method of bloodletting but for some reason expelling nine ounces of blood didn't seem to cure the ailing pope finally on august eighteenth. Fifteen three seventy two year. Old pope alexander. The sixth died almost immediately. Rumors spread that alexander had been poisoned. Lord knows yet plenty of enemies who wished him dead however the likely cause of death was malaria. The notoriously hot summers brought with them mosquitoes from the tiber river. As was the custom. Violence broke out in the streets of rome. Once word got out that the pope was dead. Normally this was a chance for the or seaney and colona to go at it against one another but this time the to powerful families shared a common enemy.

"And the way she'd start singing it originally. She's got this very low voice and it's almost a little quiet and it's not what you equate with gospel singing and then when the song really gets going man this she belted. That's really good. But that's maybe just on the outside looking in for me josh. The the top three here. I couldn't rank the others into a top five. So i'm gonna give you the top three and you've actually touched on all of them. Number three is when mahalia jackson hands the mic to mavis. Or depending on how you look at it. Mavis takes the mic shelia jackson because she even says when she gave the mike back to me oh she likes that validation her remembering that in reflecting on those generations colliding the way she revered her but expressed that reverence the way she performed with her but also didn't hold back at the generations. They're just like they were in the crowd they're colliding on stage and they're embracing each other and they're collaborating on the song. Take my hand precious. Lord and mellie jackson according to mavis staples said. I'm not feeling so. Well i'm gonna need you to really run with this. I'm gonna give you the mike you're going to get to be the star of the show. And then the way she turns it over to mahalia. And then there's a point where male you actually does put the mic back in her face and mavis kind of takes it from her. Yeah and and she. She.

Kishore Mahbubani says COVID-19 won't stop China's rise

"These days for China there's been an economic slowdown a trade and technology war with America. One of the few issues of bipartisanship in today's Washington then there have been protests in Hong Kong global criticism of Beijing's treatment of the Muslim minorities not to mention Western anxiety about the role of Y in those five G. networks and don't forget the allegations of Chinese interference in sovereign states across the region. Add to this. The outbreak of corona virus or covered nineteen and silently some pundits and they mainly in the West. They're asking whether we're witnessing communist China's Chernobyl moment what do you think well one distinguished intellectual who profoundly disagrees with all this skepticism. He's my guest today. Kishore Mahbubani is distinguished fellow. The Asia Research Institute at the National University of Singapore a former ambassador to the UN twice and a former foreign secretary of Singapore case. Your has risen several influential books on Asia and the rise of China the lightest one is called has China won the Chinese challenge to American Promessi as published by public phase in New York Keisha. Welcome back between the lines. My pleasure there'd be back now you've heard all these. These dial warnings about China and as I say they mainly come from listeners. What do you disagree well? I think it's absolutely certain that the return of China to his place as the number one economy in the world cannot be stopped because from the year one to the eighteen twenty or eighteen hundred of the last two thousand years the two largest economies of the world were always those of China and India so the past two hundred years of Western domination award. History have been an aberration. All aberrations come to a natural end and China's return cannot be stopped. And that's absolutely set. You say in your book that if Xi Jingping does not put in place San Succession mechanisms. America could win this geopolitical contest and bear in mind just a couple years ago. She overturned legislation on. Term Limits for presidents essentially might himself later for life. Some of these critics say that. How does that promote good governance for China and a sound succession mechanism? That will allow China to Rosza Unabated well I would say that the history of China has taught them when they have strong central government. The people benefit a lot. When this week government they suffer a lot and you look at a hundred years of humiliation. That China's suffered from the first opium war of Eighteen. Forty two right until the establishment of the People's Republic of China in nineteen forty nine. The main reason why they went through one hundred years of humiliation was because they had weak central government so what Xi Jinping has given to China is once again very strong central government this is an asset for China. I think he's going to be around as Vita for a long time. And as long as he's around. I think China will do very well. Okay will you say that this geopolitical contest that's broken out between America and China? That will continue marathon. Rice does that mean that Beijing and Washington a doomed to confrontation. Well the the reason why. I'm producing my book now. Has China one his precisely because I want to avoid a confrontation in my. I think it's absolutely unnecessary for the United States and China to get entangled in this confrontation because at the end of the day the primary goal of the United States government is to improve the wellbeing of the American people than the best way to improve the well being of the American people especially in this call. The crisis is to work with China and not work against China but of course unfortunately the United States has other goal and is the primary goal of the United States is to maintain primacy in the global order. Then that will lead to confront To leading American proponents of containing China. John Shaw. The University of Chicago Have Stephen. Walt whom you quoted approvingly in your book about the perils of American Hubris and exceptionalism but on China I disagree. They say I've been guests on this program and I've made this point Measham and casual. They say that a rising China does indeed threaten the regional status quo and Washington moreover will and should go to great lengths to ensure that China does not dominate the Asia. Pacific your response. Well I think the question is whether or not they can both live with each other In the region if if the United States by the way you know all the countries in this region many of them one the United States will remain strong player in this region. I think it'd be good for the region to have United States. Remain as strong Leah. By United States can remain a strong player without on fronting China. He can remain a strong player by working with China In in in many critical areas. And frankly if you ask the countries in the region What they would like to see they would like to see a strong China and they would like to see a strong United States. But they don't want to be forced to choose within China and the United States and we'll get to this question about choosing later on in the show but I want to stick with America. There is a consensus in the region. That America should stay but Foreign Affairs magazine. This is the Distinguished New York Journal to Achieve. Contributed this month. It faces a range of top. Foreign Policy Thinkers. They're all weighing on whether or not the. Us is in the process of global retrenchment The cover of Australia's leading Foreign Affairs Journal. This month is is called can trust America So Am I right in saying you? Don't think American showing any signs of withdrawing from Asia. Now I see no signs at all America retreating from the region and And I think that very strong as you know policy in America is to some extent made by the president but is also made by the deep state and the deep state has a very strong consensus that they got to remain very strongly Industry region. So I don't see an American of withdraw anytime in the near future but I do I do argue that the United States has got to behave differently. With China net once had One tenth the size of China's of America's GNP retailers but today China's be GNP BB. Dems is bigger than the United States. So you behave differently. Was this animal. What about that? Animals DASA more assertive. Now in your book and you listening to Katia Mahbubani. We're chatting about his new book. Has China one in your new book as show you dedicate a chapter to the question is China expansionist and you say basically China wants to respect global rules and norms but let's face it. It has ignored the ruling from the UN's Permanent Court of Arbitration. That was at The Hague in two thousand sixteen. The high concluded for those of you listening who've forgotten about this this is four years ago. Chana's conduct around the Scarborough Shoal and the Spratly islands it was illegal and let's remember Beijing has continued to build up a military prisons on artificial Alan's at drive out local fishermen and in the last few months case. Short Sean has been bullying Indonesia over the Natuna islands. How is all this respecting global order? Well you know one point. I emphasize said there were people talk of benevolent. Great Powers Turn Benevolent Grid. Power is an oxymoron. So as you know the United States today has not ratified the law. The Sea Convention. So in in some areas as China emerged behaving exactly the United States. The United States would never accept going to a tribunal to judge whether or not the United States valid or invalid claiming any area in that respect. China is behaving like the United States by just as the United States. Most of the time respects most international rules and conventions China. Also most of the time respects most of international rules in confections in many ways. China's behavior and America's behaviour is very similar in the international arena. Your critics would say that. China's maritime climbs a contested by the Philippines Malaysia Brunei Indonesia Vietnam Beijing has antagonized nations log New Zealand Australia with cyber attacks and and political interference. Nightside casual these. Not Diplomatic Wins for president. She hasn't he made some big mistakes. Well I it's it's it's interesting. It's always the rest. That is screaming very loud on this South China Sea When was the last time you heard a very strong statement from militia All of all of Philippines On the South China Sea. Why you're seeing behind. What is happening behind the scenes is a lot of diplomacy that is not reported in the Western media. Now I cannot comment on the side of the tax on Shelia and New Zealand but I I believe it was Edward Snowden revealed to us that if you live in today's world you can assume that anything you put up. There is being monitored completely by the National Security Agency of the United States. So I think what the world needs is new conventions in the cyber area and the world should work together do agree on some set of rules for what you can or cannot do in terms of cyber hacking spoke with the New Zealand professor. Anne Marie Bridie last week on this program and she told us about three investigations into Chinese interference in politics that a currently underway in New Zealand. But we WANNA go there now and finished your point. I was quite struck by a law in in your book. He sure well. You talked about the Chinese reluctance to conquer Australia quote. Future historians will marvel at the fact that even though Australia is geographically close to China. It was physically. It was physically occupied in conquered by far more distant British forces absolutely true. I mean if China was an expansionist power wrenching. Her travel all the way to Africa. He could have easily gone to Australia. Additional Australia. Remarkable accident of history. That Australia was colonized by British forces than not Chinese. I mean future. Historians will marvel. The anomaly visits Tom Switzer. On our in 'em I guess is Keisha Mahbubani the former foreign secretary of Singapore and President of the UN Security Council. He's now a distinguished fellow at the National University of Singapore. We're talking about his new book. Has China one now for some of Iran's listeners in Venice Matas whether your overstating China's rise and I WANNA put to you this very rule weakness in limitation surely because many analysts They argue that there's a ticking bomb in China it's low birthright and the aging population and this is the argument that will reduce the workforce and could potentially break social security system. How would you respond to those critics? Oh that's absolutely no question. That China faces a lot of serious Internal Challenges. Because you know it is to instill a developing country It's CABBIE DYING IF I get it right. It's still about ten thousand dollars. One-sixth debt of the United States has a long way to go before it becomes fully developed country. And that's precisely why China wants to focus on its internal development and not get dragged into an all-out geopolitical contests with the United States. So you notice that China wherever possible is trying to avoid getting entangled with the United States even though the United States clearly is challenging the United States challenging the United States charging China In many
