"So james think of joe thornton at age seventy eight out there. The toronto i guess he's gonna start it out. Sheldon keefe. leaves head. Coach is gonna start old man river in between mitch and austin matthews on their number one line. Yeah i you know. I don't think much of it right. Because here's how that's gonna go okay. We'll start for the in the first game and we'll see all goals right. It's not it's not like you ought to lock in you know it's not like there's a rule saying he's got to stand that first line for seven games or whatever they'll put them in you know it's it's probably a pretty good marketing idea right. Not that the leash need to market their team. Their audience being so big. But so i don't think much like whatever the guy shit they're going to move he's going be he's gonna be moving down a line. Steve about every twenty minutes chase way joe jordan. Come over is next. He's on the second line now. Yeah so when. I when i read that headline you know. It's like like like a starting goalie announcement you know putting them. We're putting in seoul and so right on. What young boy now. So good point when you talk about an off season you know it's it. It does generate headlines. And i don't think that truly. I don't think the leaves have any operations of making that a permanent thing. Not even through the first freak and half of the first period right or if if it happens at all I just It's i think it's a way to of really truly welcoming joe thornton to toronto. Because while he's not going to be relied upon heavily to be the offensive thrusts that he's been throughout his career is forty one years old Oldest ford in the nhl. It's not likely to be a guy They're leaning on that heavily but they are leaning on him quite heavily to be a great leader on the team which is one of the voids for the toronto maple leafs in these recent years on good talent citing young talent but rudderless totally rudderless. Right.

"Saturday and Sunday afternoon we've got to come up for a little bit of air just a little refractory round robin session. The Games pick up again tonight, Sunday, we're going to recap everything I, have some predictions about let's say the boys right now. Sure. Everyone's a little tired after that first week, but we got a lot more to go producer Mike Grinnell. What is up? What's going on guys. As you know, eight seven August seventh was the one year anniversary as to when we dropped pink Whitney or made the announcement for Whitney. So I had a couple of pink Whitney's the other night and I was begging Kevin Hayes for forgiveness and ended up texting him that if the Philadelphia Flyers Win The Stanley Cup. I will get a picture of Kevin Hayes tattooed somewhere on my body. Oh. Christ our other ass cheek baby. Okay. On my other Ash-sheikh I'll let him decide or decide where. But I'll let him decide what actually goes on but. Yeah. That's how I'm doing voice. Good. Fliers. Dude won't clap with his Lacrosse teammates, get a tattoo of Kevin, hayes on his forehead. Crazy crazy character, Mike Eager Nah. It's all about the guys come on two thousand twenty. BIZ So I haven't even brought this up your back on the sauce on just having a couple of beers here and they're. Just. They're. Crazy. Yeah. Thought you needed that maybe just have two or three, well, record a nice feeling I. Just noticed that. So to bring it up how? Actually I've been on a fourteen day heater. down. Off. Six. Minutes in the past week. So. Things aren't going great. Thanks bringing it up. To. Well, over here, no. Thinks have been good man a little little lubrication. Hockey playoffs or back I'm excited. It's nice to have hockey to talk about and these fucking games have been awesome. We're going to get into it, but couldn't be happier. The yolks are moving on. Have we talked about that yet? Since last podcast? No, we only said concluded since our last show, but obviously, there's business with the the other fellas on the show. Yeah. You want to get to the dogs I biz source of three hour podcast and our dedicated to Darcy. Kemper? Our dedicated to coyote special teams, and then we'll maybe we'll finish off talk for the Halibut. No, you know what? Let's not start out with the oats. Let's let's maybe talk about a few other teams I, and we'll get just full disclosure here. We're going to be doing most of the recaps and previews, but we tape in Sunday afternoon. Some of US had familial obligation. So we're going to be taping the rest of the show late at we're. GonNa. GonNa, add it on later. Instead of making growly be a crazy edit genius just to give you a heads up a couple of predictions in Rio results are going to be in a little later in the show full disclosure. That's all mainly because leaves full disclosure. But mainly because the leaves have forced a game five and it's night and we have to give our thoughts on what unravels as this is by far above the craziest series so far. I mean to swings like that from game three to game for you had millbury. Basically, he'll bitch worry for Tampa during the game. I'm Joe. Old takes exposed. Probably got a million dollars advertising money. You said for tap I I'm sorry. I'm looking at Toronto say Tampa. Season Tees in hockey. It's OK minus one. Turnover Columbia, the I, a lot of hockey left, IRA. Hockey left. Biz The author shift. Hey, everybody. Lot of minutes left to get that back. You're you're now feeling the pressure a little bit early. Ninety nine point three percent chance of winning game four per evolving hockey obviously didn't pan out, you gotta give credits, the Leash Coccia Sheldon Keefe road the hot hand, you have the same lineup on the ice for all three goals. You know some coaches throw the different lines out. He rode the hot hand that worked out the best farm. This was an interesting stat tube is the last time. The leaves came back from down three goals to win a playoff game and all the time was nineteen ninety-three. The winner was could by Mike Felino. Happened with his kid in the penalty box. I, thought the call. It wasn't what you expect to see an ot visited. You think of that call. We'll. First of all, you hop back over the boards. Your next shift made a nice play Apple. Now, you're back to even talk. Through. A check dude, he didn't get in. I mean He. Threw, status. And cleanly. All right. All Right, fine. He threw a nice heck out the boys going. We're GONNA. Get the goal back now. I thought it was cheeky, and I thought that you said it best. When he came out of the penalty box, I thought one one of the four. Maybe even a linesman was going down because he was fucking fuming and as far as the call concern task that over to you, if he had killed Aref, which which it really. Aref dead. Thought. Right. Away, let's tweet this. There's going to be a dad ref. Let's put it this way. He wouldn't even get murder one or more whatever the worst murderers manslaughter because that call if that happened to the Toronto Maple Leaf Fan base. There would've been a never ending shit storm of bag wining and flipping out. and. When it gets Columbus and all of a sudden, it's hey, with the leafs fans. Those penalty and even if it wasn't robbed Blah Blah horrendous. Come on site refereeing over Osman Pretty Shitty Also. These guys are coming back, dude, it's it's not easy for them. Either not looking at just shoulder blame on all refs, but that call who and Felino to be that, upset. I totally understand what's going through his mind. We had the series locked up. We were moving into the playoffs. We were moving out of fake world playoffs into the real deal starting next week, and it was taken away from them. Now granted the leafs water comeback I couldn't believe it. I actually will admit. When it was three nothing when they made it three nothing I think there were six minutes left, whenever were six or seven minutes of the third I. Just shut it off time for golf. Primetime Golf. All weekend. And I. saw her on twitter three to. I'd just didn't even see the first one I check three to back to this game and to see the tie how beeper celebration saw that he was pumped. He's a die hard. So I I'm I love to see Toronto do that because off with what they've been through, not even saying I'm rooting for them, but just for that to happen to them, and then like the entire world shit on them, that's the Toronto Maple leafs. This is the Toronto Maple. Grenell had a great. Great. Little little posted things feel normal again, the leaves long three nothing leads I get there that that's them now and it was they were listening to it and they got young guns and they're listening to maybe they're not. But there are people out there questioning some of these guys, and then they do it to Columbus that next night to stay alive. So they go on to lose Oh, Shit. I can't mention that. Can I like if they go on to.

"Competing for a championship can't see your family and that's why we saw the pushback a lot of guys right away. That's the whole thing like my people say it's not gonna be that hard to win a championship this year. I think for reasons like that. It's going to be justice hard because at least in the playoff it gets your kids. Good point we move along When we come back you will hear from Rick. Peckham play by play voice of the Tampa Bay lightning. We come back to playing hockey. They are one of the favorites. Talk to one our favorites in the broadcast booth. Rick Beckham next thirty one thoughts the park Elliott. He is one of the most beloved play by play voices in all of the NHL Calling the Tampa Bay lightning games. He is rick. Peckham joins US now on thirty one thoughts the podcast Rick. First of all. Thanks so much for joining us in Second. Give us an update. How are you is rick? Peckham family and friends is everyone. Okay everyone is fine. Thanks very much. Jeff great to be with you and Elliott. I've been following along. You guys her doing well. Under the circumstances we're fine here in Tampa I think Folks in Florida are very fortunate in these very unusual and tough circumstances for so many people but just the the great outdoors is just there. The weather's been spectacular. And we're finding out that the more you're outdoors obviously observing social distancing. It helps in this type of circumstance. And we've been able to do that. Well I think a lot of people you said. You wrote a great piece before the season where you talked about. This would be your final year broadcasting the lightning. And you've had a long career going back to one thousand nine hundred seventy seven and I think the first question I have is assuming this season resumes and we all hope it does and some way will you finish the year with the lightning. What are your plans? Well if the season continues I will continue no question about that. I'll finish this season. Obviously we don't know what that's GonNa look like but My plans are full. Steam ahead as far as this season is concerned good. Glad to hear I mean nobody gets to choose the way they get go out really so. I'm glad to hear that you've made that decision. Yes really funny because obviously of had plenty of time as everybody has to reflect on what we were doing before everything came to a stop and Elliot you and I were having a conversation right before Sheldon Keefe address the media the morning of the lightning leaps game that would have been Tuesday the tenth of March. And you just realize that just a matter of hours really. Everything stopped and that's where we are. It's just a kind of incredible. It's almost become aware we're you moment and for me. You know that The events of of March eleventh where I was on the air with Elliot and Berkey and our entire hockey broadcast turned into NBA updates. And what that means for the NHL going forward. What's your March Eleventh Story? The tenth is you mentioned was the against the Maple leafs and then on March Eleventh Starting with the The NBA and that season getting paused everything changed. What was your story? Rick Well March. Eleventh was really kind of a day of recovery for me and also personal business with the retirement around the corner. I had to get some personal business taken care of in terms of getting set up for that eventuality and it's tax season in. I had saved that week to get everything done in so I was kind of away from the hockey scene until later in the day when I could start preparing for the game that the lightning were supposed to play against the flyers and Thursday the twelfth and Thursday the twelfth of comes and they walk into the arena and as soon as I walk in they had just announced that the morning skate had been cancelled and the game was in doubt at that point but as a couple of the members of our production team from Fox. Sports son were in the building. We were talking about the scenario. And they're like well. The equipment trucks pulled up the flyers putting all their gear on. They've they've been told it's over and we haven't heard anything officially until really early afternoon but Then it really starts hitting you like. Wow what's going on here and is a couple of weeks isn't a month is at six weeks. We had really heard any official plan at that point and obviously with Gary coming out and speaking to everybody in the afternoon at the became pretty clear that wow this is serious and we are going to be down for a while. Here is so. Let's just looking at your career. Rick I remember one story. And it's a boat you but it's also not about you and when I think of you I I always think of this story so prior to Brian and blom who you guys do a great job on the lightning broadcast your regular analysts was bobby Taylor the former flyer goalie. Bobby drove the League bananas. Because he would always rip referees he would always rip calls and he.

"Firm ud on partnership with tsn episode. Twenty of the raindrops hockey podcast. I'm Darren Gregor and I'm in a hotel room in Ottawa Ontario Canada. Ray Ferraro your in a hotel room in Toronto Ontario Canada. We're living the life here right. I mean this is this is the lengths that we go to to bring the people what they want what they need what they deserve in just podcast greatness week by week. Oh Yeah it's It's phenomenal. I don't know how Your Hotel Room it's mine is a meat. It's like think of when Rocky Balboa was punching the flanks of beef Mike. Okay I don't know what is going on in my room here but the heater doesn't work or something. It's just like soul cold in here but I'm going I'm going to grind it out. It's that time of year. Drags you gotTa get it done? Z? You'RE NOT. It's not even like you're being punked by a former teammate. Who came in and readjusted the thermostat right so no just. No that was that was well thought out. Well planned by those Gla- by Chris Tamer. Jeff odd jobs and Sean. That was well but they made my room like an oven. This just freezing. Well I'll tell you this You know often almost on a weekly basis. Tiny the rain drags mascot will bark in the background and Our guests who by the way? We've got Tyler Seguin joining us later in the podcast of the Dallas Stars. Who's also a dog lover? So we'll talk about that But tiny will often bark. Create some sort of mayhem Don't be offended alarmed or annoyed. Please Ray at when you hear the vacuum cleaner banging against my door because I can hear the made on the outside. I've put do not disturb. That doesn't matter that doesn't matter if there is aggressive vacuuming. Yeah you can. This used to be a beef when when I was playing so like you take your nap. Hang the do not disturb all right. Well they're doing their job. They're not really concerned about if you're taking a NAP or not. It's the middle of the afternoon. Stop it and that is exactly what you you get the knock on the door but has happened a year. Maybe you got a dirty hall. I literally was just out there. Ten minutes talking with his lovely person saying please. Can You keep it as quiet as possible outside my door now? I was trying to explain the podcast. Apparently she's not a podcast fan. No she didn't care. She does not care what you're doing. She just wanted to make sure my towels refresh in the garbage. Was Was taken out. Okay what do you do when you come into the room though I hang out the do not disturb green choice thing? Yeah if I'm in the room for a week. Nobody enters the room but me right. I don't need someone. I'm the only person in the bed. I use one towel how I assume you use soap when you're in the shower once a week because I don't WanNa waste. Well there you go you come out your clean your towels clean. Hang it up. Dry it off. Use the same towel. Like what do you need more towels for? What come on man. You cannot use the same towel like shower. You Wash your face. You do a number of things over the course of date I I so i. I'll use one towel for a date but I've been in Ottawa since Monday night and I've probably gone through four towels in that time that grosses me out why I have a hand towel that you know when you wash your face wildly wants to know who you do. Your hand tells right Drake's I'm not I'm not eighteen. Would you grow up just a moment towels? You're wasteful man. Seriously I what is wrong with you. Hang it up. It's dry it's clean use it again. I know see I do embrace the idea the green choice when you check in particular but you gotta use it if I just thought how. What the Hell's the difference fair enough? You know the challenge of recording the podcast aside from both of us being in hotel rooms is significant with a trade deadline looming right. I'm GonNa tell quick story so I as I said. I arrived in Ottawa on Monday. Night so I go to the morning Skate Buffalo and Ottawa Tuesday morning and in one of the first players that I run into in entrenches. The bowels of the Canadian Tire Centers Mark Bore Viet Ski of the sands. He limps over. He's got the Bat Ankle and he looks at me and he goes man he goes. You're like the angel of Death. Like what are you doing here? But it's it's one hundred percent because again trade deadline is looming and all of these players. I he's not GONNA get traded. He's hurt number one and Ottawa's GonNa WanNa keep him you know there's talk of a two year extension there but honestly you know you're in the urine arenas three four times a week so it's not unusual to see Ray Ferraro Around the the dressing rooms when you attend mornings gates But in my case you know. They're looking at Megan. What is he doing here? There must be a trade developing or something along those lines. Well the thing is like everybody's so on edge and you know how none of the players follow social media. They all do they all do especially at this time of Year Right. Because everybody's looking for a scoop in you know any. I mean it's your life right so I ended up. You know remembering back to when I was playing in you. Call your agent have you. Have you heard anything because you couldn't ask them? We didn't have. There was no texting so he'd call. Have you heard anything? You'd go? Nope even if he had heard anything he was going to say. No it's because he's not GonNa send you into a panic for something that may or may not happen and then some guy would say. Hey I heard your name pop a discussion. Because his agent might have called him something. It's like it's like the game of telephone where you whisper into somebody's ear and then by goes ten people around. It's some completely different. It's everybody's following because it's it's really such a an unsettling time so I need some advice here so just before we started recording episode twenty A player agent did call me asked about his client and I flat out said No. This is the supplier that certainly on the block and likely could be traded. It's Game Day for this player and the agents will do you think I should tell them. I'm a no now I mean I know would you? You wouldn't have wanted to know that on a Game Day would you that? Potentially you're being graded no. I don't I didn't want I wouldn't want to know that. Like how and and like I said before the problem becomes. It might not happen so talented. The only thing you're thinking about is not the guy across from you you're thinking about. What am I doing here if I get traded? I've got a I wonder where it is. I wonder where I gotTA leave. I wonder like you're not even there and so no absolutely not so. I think we need to Explain something to our listeners. Here rate I sound crystal clear pristine in fact with my fancy road travel. Mike which I remember to bring with me as I always do And you on the other hand sound like you're talking through like a headset with through your ear buds. That's what I'm doing now. It's really funny that you would bring it up because like like you. Hey that's what you sound like. We're on a video hookup. You Idiot I mean we can see each other you know. I've got my headset in. Because my road mike which is exceptional is at home on my desk because I forgot it. Okay so so. You've acknowledged that we're on a video hookup correct. Okay just did I just hold on for a second my goodness you gotTa get in the Gym Man? So could again. I know canton that okay. Can we do the rest of the podcast when the just in a T. shirt? I'm wearing boxers but I don't have found some are you with this. Are you okay with that? I'm I'm totally totally fine. Within as long as you're comfortable and get yourself into the gym I definitely do after you get back into the gym no house. You can't go there and sit there. You gotta get on a machine you got to be. It's one of the reasons why I love traveling with you especially when we're at the world championships for an extended period of time because you shame me into exercise but I need it. It's it's it's not a big deal. You're a good guy it's all about. It's all about keeping yourself moving. You can't just sit there on your phone now. Delivering as Mark Bore. Viet ski says Angel of Darkness News to the players. Speaking of again let's promote our trade deadline post podcast. I mean we're going to be exhausted right at the conclusion of Monday's trade deadline. We're on the air for an additional three hours. Three o'clock eastern is the deadline. Where on the air till six we're GONNA race over into a studio at tsn right and we're GONNA do thirty. Maybe forty minutes of opinion and analysis of everything that went down on Monday as part of the trade deadline. Best part about the trade deadline is when it's over. That's what you have. The teams can't change anymore. You've this is your group that you're gonNA either make it to the playoffs with compete for the Stanley Cup. With or not and I I really kind of like that. This is a great a opportunity for sponsorship If you WANNA jump on board with the trade deadline post podcast you can do that. If you are interested in partnering with US HERE ON THE RAIN. Drake's hockey podcast. You can visit rate and dregs dot com and hit the sponsorship form. That's attached on the website. Let's take a look the five biggest hockey items this week. Ray and We know we're recording this. You're in Toronto for the leafs and the Pittsburgh Penguins So who knows how that game will go when people are listening to this? Love a pretty good handle on it by Jeff O'Neill the Oh dog Carlo Colaco on tsn. Ten fifty radio absolutely nailed the Toronto. Maple leafs This Week. And and truthfully because of the passion they seem to be the faces and the voices of a very angry maple leafs nation. They've got all world skill. Why why is this team struggling? So mightily ably. Well the the thing that everybody keeps coming back to and it's funny the players are talking about it. Mike Babcock was talking about it. At the start of the year Sheldon Keefe is referred to it for at various times in his tenure is that they're they lack urgency. They lacked commitment. They lack detail orientation to their play. It's the same thing over and over again so the game tonight. Which of course. By the time everybody's listening will will know what's happened But the game tonight really isn't about XS and Os and whether Dennis Malkin the new. The newest leaf is GONNA fit in on a third line or fourth line. Or whether they're gonNA change their four check. None of that matters tonight. Really what matters is do they have will.

"Those are the digits hits at this time. We are now going to hook up with none other than John. Poulter professor sports who has been a little bit in and out of the mix lately because of sickness weakness and things along those lines so hope you're feeling a lot better. John and I can't wait to talk some hockey with you. My friend. How you doing this morning not too bad? Thanks Andy Yes and under the weather but on the right side of the grass Fortunately so that's all good news and thanks for your good wishes all right. Let's get after it Avenue H L hockey is obviously going in a major way right now. The hottest team in the league from not mistaken is probably the Tampa Bay lightening winners of six straight right now The next team would be the Dallas Stars and then from them would be the Vegas nights which I love of seeing. Obviously because they've they've been playing really really well and I don't want to forget about the Vancouver canucks because that's obviously somebody. That's a little bit near and dear to your heart there in Canada Canada but You know what the hockey season so far if you ask me has been relatively inspiring because I'm seeing a lot of different teams. That are making some noise this year so far at least John I hope it continues to be honest. Yes been a very interesting season and the one team team. We can't leave out of the accolades. Toronto Maple leafs nine all in one in their last ten games so all of a sudden they're back in that race with the Boston bruins the Tampa Bay lightning in the Atlantic Division. Twenty Games since Sheldon Keefe took over as head coach. Thirty one points from those twenty games compared to twenty twenty two points from the twenty three games under Mike Babcock so one situation where a coaching change After Twenty Games certainly appears to be on the right track but to your point. Yes we've seen a lot of teams step forward this season and we've seen some teams take a bit of a step backwards. I guess New Jersey would be one of but Vegas coming through nicely The coyotes Playing very very well Vancouver as you mentioned Edmonton started out extremely well all. They've fallen on tough times lately and all of a sudden find themselves in fourth spot in that Pacific Division but we started to see some teams play really well lately the Some of them. Under some rather unfortunate circumstances Pittsburgh been hurt with a lot of injuries Specifically their captain and star Sidney Crosby. But you look at the standings and all of a sudden Pittsburgh eight one and one in their last ten games were a half a season or slightly better than half the season for a couple of teams into into the The two thousand nineteen twenty season. Now so I think what we're seeing is what we're going to get to your point. It's been an outstanding season so far the morning John Mike. Hey I mean we were talking about the teams there. What what is the players? I mean what players have. You been surprised by which players I have. You been kind of shot that they haven't shown up more than along those lines Good Morning Mike. How great to chat with you You know some of the some of the guys that you expect to be stars have been stars. And I'm thinking of guys like Connor mcdavid Nathan MacKinnon Leon Dry Seidel Terms of surprises one guy. That surprised me a little bit. And he's kind of been forced into action simply because of injuries to The the guy that he plays behind in. And that's tristen Jerry the goaltender the second goaltender in Pittsburgh all of a sudden sitting there with a one point nine four goals against average That's not bad for a guy that supposedly your second goaltender the Tampa Bay lightning started out a little bit slowly but all of a sudden their best players are starting to play. Well all in thinking of guys like Stamkos and headman and Some of their other young stars They've been the guys that have played really well. David Pasternack of course question. Boston started out like a house on fire. Still has the most goals in the league. So those are the guys that have been the the surprises. I I guess if you WANNA look at guys. That haven't played all that. Well you could probably look half a dozen guys But I think there's a lot more positive than there are negative. Yes and That's that's always a good way to look at it. When you get this far into the season that is the voice of John Poultry Professors Sports joining us here on the door sports weekend edition Asian talking NHL Hockey? Hey I want to bring it home here to the Arizona coyotes and talk a little bit about Some of their talent. Talk a little bit about Clayton Keller and talk a little bit about Taylor Hall. Who obviously they brought him over? And I. I really liked that move. WHO's a lot but talk about those guys? Talk about the coyotes and and how well they've been playing and how they're number two second right now on the Pacific just behind the Vegas nights well looking at the team aspect I as you pointed out there in second place fifty two points two points behind the Vegas Nights. Do have that one game in hand as we've chatted a couple of times over the course of the season. The coyotes have made a very nice recovery. From what we've I've seen in the last few years where they've been very slow to get out of the gate this year. They came out of the gate at a reasonable pace. They've picked up pace and I think with the signing of terror the trade Taylor Hall. It's a pretty bold move. gave up three good young prospects for him. He's unsigned beyond this year. So clearly there showing a message to the team and the fans that they're in this They're only five and five in their last ten but they won their last three. And you know they're playing very very well and You know surprisingly. They're better on the road than they are at home. They're thirteen six and three on the road. Only eleven ten and one at home and you think that that would be the other way around. But that's a pretty tight division. Great that they're staying in it but they're going to have to continue to play well to hold that position. John when you think about coaches that are getting the most out of their teams which coaches you know? Come to my income off the top of your head and then you know. I'm looking at the coyotes and just going back. Coach needs to be in that discussion. Maybe with coach of the year. So there's talking about the coaching so far Yeah Attack Centigrade Jab. Go ahead and talked about talk at a number of times and I've always had a very strong opinion of talk it as a coach. She has a good reputation US players coach. He's well respected as a teacher. He's well respected as a manager of a players and he's well respected because he played in the League for a long time and other pretty successful astle level. So you have to think that He's probably the talk guy for the coach of the year running right now I'm Although it's a very short sample size I sheldon Keefe. Twenty Games in Toronto fifteen four and one. He has to be in that. Mix as well. Saint Louis Craig Ruby of course took over over last year on an interim basis won the Stanley Cup. Then got a three year contract out of it pretty sad situation when you do a good job and you have to win the Stanley Cup just to break not even Dallas is a bit of an interesting story. They had a coaching change there in December. Jim Montgomery stepped down for personal reasons and so has been replaced and all of a sudden Dallas is back in the mix there. So you know you have to you have to think that That that's been a positive would've changed. Vegas Lot of talent there. I wouldn't say that they're getting a lot out of that team. More than we would expect Dave Tippett and Edmonson doing a very good job after what we've seen the last few years. Those are the guys that I think are getting the most out of their teams Mike. That is the voice of John. POULTER professors sports joining us here on the door funds for the weekend edition talking and H. L. Hockey Alright. Still at this point in time. Where's John Poulter thinking the Nhl Stanley Cup is going to be going through at least at this point in time right now at this moment where would you? Who are the two achieves you think would be playing in the Stanley Cup? I guess the question. Well I guess if you look at it in terms of current standings overall performance so far Washington ten what has to stand out in the east for sitting with a six point. Lead over Pittsburgh Two or three weeks ago. I said Boston would be in that. Mix and there's certainly still in that that makes but they've had a rough little while four one in five in their last ten so that's a team that started coming back to or if they had some games and they haven't won those games in hand so the rest of the League's sort of come up with two of them are Boston has gone back to them. I guess is probably the best way to describe it since Boston. was they team with the game. If you're looking at the western conference Pacific Division is sort of up and down Vegas Arizona Vancouver Edmonton all.

"The emotion not a million things flying at you all the same time. I love the NHL. It's great. I love international men's hockey. It's fantastic. It is so fast. And that's awesome. It's fascinating to watch. But just for drama a slowdown high-skilled game. And right now, that's the women's level. And also those two had incredible. And. Ding's right off the street penalty kills in two thousand two and two nothing comeback in two thousand fourteen those rip standing for me. Okay. From kirk. Can you see other teams adopting the storm surge next year and could this be the new trend much like the post game center ice fan salutes? I can only imagine the strokes that will come from that if more team start doing. I mean, why not I think you have to decide if you think it appeals to your fans why not the center ice with the Rangers. The first one to bring it in. Yes. Very European had all those check players. Yeah. Very European celebration. And now everybody does it as a matter. Of course, I don't know that everybody ends up doing the storm surge, you're skating and body checking the boards, but I think I think organizations are always looking for ways to connect with their fans. We're taping this on Thursday before game one of the conference final. But I believe in the pre game tonight Christine's got a story about the whole bunch of jerks thing. Awesome. Sounds pretty good. Actually, she asked a lot of the players about it when they came to Toronto late in the Air, Jordan, Martin told a great story about how all of the Zona players his buddies. There were ripping them all year about how dumb it was. And then when he got knocked out by Holyfield, they all text them and said, okay, that's pretty cool that is free. Sweet. Okay. From Jack ask thirty one the sabers, Jeff Skinner. Coaching front runners. I'm sad. We need to be sad. Buffalo fans. I don't. I don't know. What's going on with Skinner? I mean, there's no deal. Right. I've heard that they are working under the impression he wants to come back. You know, the coaching thing I've heard Tippett, but it was said we also heard him in Edmonton. I've heard Jacques Martin. But I think Ottawa's really on him to I heard Todd Richards. But I heard that he's not a finalist. I could see lane Lambert. See they keep talking about how they want most likely prefer guy that each experience lane Lambert has been a long time to me, he's not a bad choice at all Sheldon Keefe..

"And we saw that before we talked to the podcast last week one of those teams that platoons goaltenders and they did with Boston to Rask. Carolina into like the islanders did a Carolina like teams that made out of the first round did this with their goaltenders in the regular season. I figure caught up to the at the end though. Of course, I think Lander I was surprised that they didn't start Greis in game for I think Leonard was exhausted considering his specific considering Grace's record in performance against Carolina. I mean Greis started forty three games in the regular season. Leonard started thirty nine Leonard had started four games in a row only twice all year. And I know there'd been a break between the first and second round. I simply thought he ran out of steam. That's Ben Bishop. We'll get back to the regional point. You know, I thought he was great. He's a really funny goalie to watch because he always looks like he's injured. Well, when you watch him especially late in the year, if you go back to the two thousand fifteen Stanley Cup final he was making some safety was getting up slowly or he looked like he was stretching his body. But no, but he has a long history of injuries late in the season right in that Stanley Cup final. He looked like he was battling injury. And there were points in that game in game seven where he looked like he was battling injury and Kellyanne. I always look at it. And I always ask Kelly like, what do you think? And there were times in that game. Where it looked like he was hurt. And he was fantastic. It's just sometimes the way he looks. It's like what am I seeing? Here's there's something wrong. But at the end of the day, the only thing that matters is your production, and he was phenomenal. And him and Kuban were after so many years of Dallas knocking and goaltending. They got goaltending. They got it. Right and member talking to Jim nill about it when it was anti Niimi. And Cari lenton says look we're paying them a lot of money. We're splitting games between these two because our travel is the were. Yup. So for Dallas, it's more out of necessity, by way of traveled and healthy mean Carolina is deliberate. The Allender are delivered. Like there are teams platoon goaltender deliberately Dallas is a case study in it. You wonder if that becomes more of a thing in the NHL, you could make the argument for Colorado, but that was more because Varlamov fell off after the first month this season, but they split games. We'll here's the question. Are there sixty two soon to be sixty four goalie? That's the great question. That's that's because I firmly believe we're in the of redefining what a backup goaltender. Yup. And you know, listen when you're Montreal. And you have Cary price. You kind of stick to that traditional model of we're going to ride this plus your travels a lot easier in Montreal early. But when you're a team like Dallas, you need that one point of wanna make from last week. It's a holdover point. So we were talking about Cal do with the scenery greyhounds and how they had someone who worked in the ticketing department who do player tracking for them on the road. Yup. With a sharpie and notebook like it was bare bones, but we're all doing this together with whichever resources we have this is macgyver. It's toothpaste. It's toothpicks, and we're putting this thing together. So I couldn't remember the guy's name. And I got a text after the podcast was uploaded from Cal rafters. Kyle is the general manager of the same re greyhounds, and he said the guy you're thinking of his name is Matt Rodin. I'll okay, that's I'm he was this is sort of story. Forever. News looking to get into the industry to do something. So he's the guy that would help, you know, do this Sheldon Keefe with the player track. He started in ticket sales. Okay. That was his job and last year out for the same regret. Hounds had a fantastic season top the the Chr rankings almost every single week. They lost to the Hamilton BULLDOGS. Led. By Robert Thomason exciting. Final a great season. Matt rebel was hired. By the Texas stars. He is now they're video coat. Nice to he went from working ticketing..

"Where he talked about. Everybody pulling in the same direction. Everybody in the organization everybody being on the same page. Everybody brings their own specialty. Everyone brings perspective everyone brings their own bias, whatever to every position that they're in pretty talked about all swimming up. The same stream the same way. They're all talking all the cliches apply here. I won't bore anyone with more of them. But I can recall when Kyle was in sue and Sheldon Keefe was his head coach this is cheerio Hockey League. And this is teams without a huge budget. Here's this year too. And see Sainte Marie. So we're on this slope downward this is cumulative shot differential or possession. Whatever you wanna call it Coursey, sat whatever they've branded it now and rate here we make a coaching change in that season. With Sheldon, Keefe our coach, we went for being in the first thirty games are are shot are Coursey percentage was forty seven percent and the remaining thirty fifty seven percent to twenty one percent difference in in our shot differential or percent or possession percentage. And that's the same. Exact same roster different coach what I learned at that time was the extreme value of having buying all throw you organize ation. The fact that that takes time if you're generally president general manager coach scouts everybody buys into using what you can gain from statistics analytics going to have a lot more success than if you have one person on your staff alone saying this is important and trying to gather buy in from everybody else. But this is a Kyle do shoulding. Chief team that put a premium on quote unquote and Olympics and measuring things like zone entries possession time all of that. There's no budget or even software technology that they could afford the track all that. So they would bring I think it was the. Young guy. I forget his name, but he handled ticketing same regret hounds, and he would travel with the team would sit in the stands and with counts on entries. And it would just be like check marks on a box thinking myself. This is one entire organization that is doing what do is talking about everybody pulling the same way. Yup. So that's what I know about how do the up and how he ran a team previous. Then I look at Cal dubus as general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs asked always asked the same question is he getting the same buying from everyone around him the way that he didn't Hussein Murray? I don't know many of us that would look at that situation. Say yeah, he is. I think Babcock is coming back. He's certainly left it open Deuba students media conference. I think there's a chance the assistance change we know that DJ Smith has permission interviewing Ottawa if Mark hunter is the next GM and Edmund tin. I believe that Smith will be a candidate there. I've heard that there are teams interested in Jim Hiller. He's got a connection with Joel Quenneville. I believe the islanders interviewed him or wanted to interview him last year before trots became available. I think there's more I wrote in the blog that buffalo might be interested in kief someone said to me what you didn't ask was if kief thinks is best opportunity buffalo, it's interesting. I mean, there's a lot of moving parts I think Babcock is coming back. But the one thing that I don't know. Here's I wrote this to what happens if someone like buffalo calls and says could we talk to bad Kat, just tobacco Keefe. I think they will. Will ask to see if they can interview Keefe, I heard they're really impressed. I heard the pressure in buffalo is to get someone with experience. This is what happened last time. Now, you do the reverse this time opens if they asked to speak to Babcock people. I'd never considered that. I have no insight that this is what they would even think about it. Just popped up to me as I've been thinking about all this like what of buffalo said. You know, we want to coach with experience we tried before. What are we doing here? Well, the normal course of business is you wait until a coaches dismissed at the NHL before asking teams permission to talk to them to my knowledge..

"And physically why you would choose it. And even now more so than ever, and like we're just getting out of October in transition to November now, and let's just think back to you know, the first three four weeks of the season, we've had healthy scratches, the players that Kevin shattenkirk and Carl all's ner like high profile j Bohm Easter veteran guys getting factors. No, he's that. He's going to ease into the season. It's get to the playoffs starting in October. Where every game means a ton. There's no we're gonna hit our stride sometime after Christmas. There's none of that. Like you start with a sprint? And that's why you see things I think like high impact veteran players getting scratched because there's no waiting for the sky to settle in to ease into the season anymore. Your head coach every. Single game means a ton more. So than ever that's what he's against scratch. There's nothing I hate reporting on more than coaches in trouble. Like, I generally I hate reporting a lot on things like that affect people's lives. Right. Trae rumors for some reason coaches being in trouble. They drive me crazy than anything else. And we know what's going on there last year. I had heard that, you know, Jeff Blache Al was close and Ken Holland denied it and he backed up his talk. But I felt terrible after I mentioned it, and even even this we last couple of weeks, you know, Nick Morgan talking about Mike Yohan John Stevens. Oh, we all know. It's there. You know? I hate mentioning like there's a Latvian Yohan today in the blog. I mentioned Sheldon Keefe. And just because I feel like you're almost being like a vulture. You're you're you're looking at the carcass. But it's news, and you have to do it. But it really is the thing that I like the least is. Discussing people's future. What's going to happen? Dave hostile. No just had the jump in there doing watch their game last night. I did you know, I felt you know, the Anaheim guys you could just see the sag. That's a really proud team to like, I've always I've always liked the docks. I liked the fact that they're tough. I liked the pride that they have in themselves. I liked teams can play it any way you want. And that's why I like Winnipeg. And that's why I've liked Anaheim. But you could see last night when that Philadelphia goal went in after they just tied it like they were so ecstatic Tiet and that goal away, and you can just see the sag on their bench. It's it's tough, man. That's a proud team. I do wanna get the Philadelphia. Let's do it. Now, where's everybody out with right now, you know, with Ron Hextall went to bad for his coaches? Everybody in Philadelphia was screaming for his head last season stuck with and I admired that mar the way both those guys handled. Hacksaw unflappable. Yeah. Just go forward. Head down do the work game in game out pre sheet and respect that where's Philly out right now because fans are hot no Hextall, obviously he comes out last week. And he makes his comment that we've got to do something soon. Well, we need to impact performances from your whole group if not all we'll see what's what's out there. That's trying to make your team better every every day, and when we're playing like this, you know, I it's concerning. So we need we need to show up on a more regular basis ready to go from minute one to the minute sixty percent in terms of we gotta win or something changing. And you know, what that says to me, Jeff it's that last year. His message was I'm backing my guy. And this year, it's different. And when your general manager, you know that when things go badly, you can hold off the enemies at the gates for a while. But after they're either going to start seeping through or you have to make a concession that. You don't wanna make to stop that from seeping through and to me that availability last week from Ron Hextall was him saying, you know, I've held back whoever in the organization wants change for a while. Yeah. I can't I'm doing to lose that battle or I might not be able to do that for much long elbow starting to ban. Donald Duck all through the dyke. Now, the interesting thing about this is they haven't been a team that's been mentioned a lot with knee Lander..
