We're going to take a closer look at this move now with our Alex Bloomberg social media reporter joining us from Los Angeles, always a pleasure, Alex. Thanks for making time for us. Why this move? Why now? It's a really interesting time for them to be making this move now. Look, the critics about how potentially addictive this app can be a folk scrolling on an average of 95 minutes a day here in the U.S.. That's been a concern that's been on the minds of folks for a while, but it's really interesting timing because the company is also under broader scrutiny about its impact on users, especially the young ones, but also along the lines of national security concerns because it has Chinese ownership. They're in a moment right now where policymakers and regulators in the U.S. in the EU are all talking about potentially banning the app. So it's kind of doing everything it can right now to make it a safe space for users. So this timing does raise some eyebrows seen as a good thing from some of the parents have already heard from today, but also the timing seems very fruitful for them to be talking about this when the scrutiny is at a kind of an all time high. Do we have a sense of how TikTok would go about enforcing this new rule, users under the age of 18 that will be limited for 60 minutes. I think when you're a young person and you really skilled at these types of technologies, kind of trying to find a workaround may be pretty easy. Oh, totally. Teams finding a workaround. I don't think anything would anyone would be surprised. They are. But what happens is when someone creates their accounts now if they are, they put in their birth date, truthfully, if they're under the age of 18, then they're prompted to enter a passcode. So if you're a parent or an adult of a teen, a caregiver, you can decide whether or not that teen has that passcode. So they're calling it a limit, but you can also kind of think of it almost like a speed bump or a limit one per customer sign. It's something that's there to remind folks that the powers that be think that extending past that limits a bad idea. But there are definitely workarounds. Now, that being said, if you are under the age of 18 and you have a linked account with an adult or a parent in your life, now those parents can also monitor the amount of time the teams are spending on the app, whether or not they have that password to go past that 60 minute mark. Parents can see the breakdown of daytime versus nighttime use and even the number of times that the teen actually opened TikTok in a day. What evidence do we have that TikTok has been harmful to young people? Is there anything out there that really could persuade or help support this argument? Yes, this is probably a good thing. It's moving in the right direction. Yeah, one of our colleagues wrote a really fantastic but devastating story for business week. It was a cover story looking at how there are some trends that prompted really the deaths of a number of teens of kind of self suffocation. So that is kind of the extreme side. You also have critics who question, you know, should folks should young folks be influenced by all of the content they see on the app without somebody kind of moderating what they're seeing. So the concerns kind of range the gamut from very, very serious to just real questions of how much screen time is appropriate for a young mind who might be still developing. One of the things that it's unique about this platform is the algorithm that has been used or that the company is really developed. And I think young people, any person going on from what I've gathered and speaking with people who use it, you can quickly go down a rabbit hole. Oh, absolutely. And the more that you engage, these kind of implicit signals you give them. Are you liking something? Are you commenting? Are you rewatching a video? All of those little cues are kind of hoovered up by this algorithm to give you more of what it seems like you're wanting. So if you are a young person who's curious about something, whether it's something delightful, like cat videos or whether it's something more nefarious, this app can kind of absolutely start to drag you in and show you more without you even prompting it. So that's some of the sticky nature. It's what's both delightful and also particularly concerning to critics of this app because TikTok has been able to master that in a way that social media companies in the past haven't been quite a skillful in doing. Very quickly, Alex, what do we know about how TikTok arrived at this 60 minute time limit? This is one that they've tested. They kind of had some soft limits that parents could put in place over the last couple of years. And it seems like this just is the number they landed on.
