'We come from the stars': Indigenous astronomy, astronauts, and star stories
"When you think about the night sky what constellations come to mind. Chances are they're rooted in western astronomy but indigenous. Astronomy and scientific knowledge have been here for millennia. It's just not taught in schools or considered important within universities. My next guest is working to change. That nielsen is mick ma. And he's a professor in the department of astronomy and astrophysics at the university of toronto. Helping welcome thank you for having me. So how would you describe the way. Astronomy is typically taught in university course university of toronto's famous having a an astronomy course fifteen hundred students in it in that course generally starts from the early greek and roman astronomy aristotle type of plato pythagoras and they will channel through european astronomy with newton and cabrera hey and yohannes kepler and galileo of course the modern enshrinement is just one linear path from the romans to essentially neil degrasse tyson and today scientists. It's very very centered in the european model. And how have you been incorporating indigenous knowledge in your courses. I've been trying to do that little bit here. And there are courses tend to be quite full of material so adding new materials always a challenge. But i always want to make sure students come in and the first thing they see is not there. Expect a constellation. I don't him see a bear with the tail lakers major. I want them to see the constellation view. I nor a constellation of the bear or a punish shining relation that please and to recognize that these constellations reflect landover on i for in toronto or in new magi or anywhere and what is indigenous astronomy. And how do you define it. How is it or how old. I define indigenous astronomy. As being the the knowledge of the peoples of the land so and since burnett Nation state of canada would find it as the astronomers of the people that were here before settlers in colonizers so strongly of the astronomy of first nations big cree on astronaut and so on across across rhode island and every nation has their own perspective of the night skydrone interpretation in knowledge of it and so these indigenous astronomers speak to connection to the land and and to the people and that knowledge has been here as long as the people have been here and so is there a star story that comes to mind for you that gives an understanding of indigenous astronomy. Great story was the story of noon on the seven bird hunters which is a story so close your eyes and you're looking morni- guy and you see what we call the less the big dipper. And if you're looking at the big dipper couple of hours before dawn in spring you're gonna see the big dipper pointing downwards so the four stars make up the bear kind of facing downwards detail is climbing higher in the sky the four stars of the big dipper in the bull our immune the bear and then pours. What would be the handle. The big dipper are at the bird hunters and you go on those three stars to another four to get the seven hunters and the story starts by while you have to get up early in the morning a couple of hours before dawn to this constellation when we observe it at that time in the morning and we observed every day we can see the constellation circle around the sky. The constellation circles around sky every night as well. So we see the two different timescales in play but if we start in the spring at that to ask for dumb the bowl. The big dipper the bears pointing downwards. And that's when the bears waking up from tiber nation and decides hungry needs to go gather food as the bear leaves. The cave i robin spies upon the bear grabs it's bone arrow and size to chase it from hunt and the story continues through the summer when muniz running across the land so the constellations kinda flat across the sky and the birger chasing it as we get towards fall newness getting tired and stands likes to fight back so the constellations on one side again. Some of the birds have fallen below the horizon and must track the hunt but immune you and stands back robin fires. It's era a striking the immune in the heart killing it. Blood gets everywhere. All of robinhood flies into the tree shakes off the blood separate one stain on his chest. The leaves are now allred as a result. Chickeny joins robin. And they begin a celebration to cook the cook. The bear and to celebrate the feast harvest as we approach winter the constellation as the bears on his back again and reflecting the spirit of the baron sky and waiting for spring to come as part of the next cycle. So we see lots of different kinds. We have knowledge of the year as a calendar have knowledge of ritual and ceremony and we have connection with nature. So it's not just a shawny story. It's it's part of. It's a story that people in story of how to be.

A look at leaf shine products, and how to clean leaves
"I wanted to get to the bottom of the league. Shine business and joining me to help answer. This question is larry hodgson aka the laid back gardner and the first question to tackle is. What's actually in that. Can of leave. Sean as you never know because if you look in the label it won't tell you. However it contains various products it could be silicone it could be different oils and no one really knows what's in you could check it out. You could contact the company and they probably give you the information. But essentially it's a shiny coating that is applied over top of the leaf larry's right really hard to find out exactly. Walt is in. That can spray bottle of leaf shine. Done some digging and looked at various product sheets for different leaf shine brands and is not a lot of illumination to be had there some of them list various things like nap though which is a solvent of petroleum based solvent some of the products list butane. Because i think that's what's used as propellant for the air assault while another listed it's active ingredient as peanin. What's that well. It's a chemical found in the essential oil get from pine trees and one type of pinning is the main component of up until and other than that is just vague references to mineral oils and waxes and very little specific information about the ingredients. Adid find a recipe for a leaf shine. Spray in a book called practical formulas for hobie or prophet by henry goldschmidt. This came out in one thousand nine seventy three and it lists the ingredients as vp slashing. Va one dash five three five three to five percent. Carbon wax fifteen hundred at point two zero two point three five percent. I say pro panel at thirty one to twenty nine percent and propellants sixty five percent. So obviously that's roughly what we're talking about here. How long have these leaf shines bid around. Well i couldn't find an enormous amount of information on the history of lee shine sprays. But i did find a book dating from nineteen thirty three called the chemical formula re by harry bennett and eat dade list recipe for relief. Shine spray then which didn't sound that much different from the ones we use today so so they've obviously been around for at least well ninety years and probably a bit longer so could leaf shine. Help our plants. I was larry. No it's not gonna be good. It's not going to be good for several reasons. The most office ones courses many leaves have still not on the top and the bottom and if you spray on the top of the leaf you're blocking their breaking to is how how they breathe so yes. It reminds us d'amato tomato if you prefer. Is the breathing holes of the plant and if he spray something onto the leaf. That's going to block those holes. Well that's going reduce the amount of gas exchange. That is able to do so. You're keeping the plot from breathing correctly. So that's not going to be good also some of these not all of them. Some of the make more sticky pickup dust. And that'll block the plaza's well cut off night. And if you have cats for example of homer or dogs that shed it'll make these covered in for just not good either one thing people don't think about though is that if the leaf is shiny extra shawny abnormally shiny is actually reflecting. It's not absorbing light. So you're cutting back on the light that the plant gets and that's a major one now only are Decreases up by a small amount but still most plants indoors just barely enough to survive. You don't want to block the light. They tend to them. So that's three different reasons. They're not such a good thing. Yeah i don't know about you. But i really don't fancy having wolfe's we will shed very much. But i still don't want his hairs sticking to my arrowhead leaves. It's not a good look at that point about reflecting light. Well that's a really good one. That i hadn't thought of. Yeah every little drop of light counts when you're indoors where light levels are so much lower so by spraying on leaf shine. You might actually be juicing your chances of optimizing photosynthesis

We don't know the details Of when non Helena was born but it was around the seventeen twenty s probably in western Pennsylvania. When rumblings of revolution began to take hold across polly's cornstarch and non Halama decided that the best strategic move for the Shawnee people would would be to support the American settlers over the British? This was a risky move. Considering the perceived military might of the British Horn Ornstein was assassinated in seventeen seventy seven but non Halama state the course with the support of her husband Mulugeta who was also a prominent leader and warrior when non Halama learned that some Shawny had traveled to join the British at Fort. Detroit she responded by rushing to warn the Americans of this development she disguised too revolutionary soldiers traditional Shawny garb so that they travel undisturbed for Donnelly to warn of the impending attack. Those Shawnee who had allied themselves with the British destroyed. that's amazing I'm like so curious you guys have been here for a week now what have you noticed is like different in terms of maybe treatments are taught to say that because we actually interviewed Shawny just the other day and she is so hooked up with all the rules and the gizmos to use at home and like she recommends them to her clients for in between sessions I feel like in our world it's less about that more or and more about just like comeback in come back in and just what you guys are talking about right now I think it's just at a different level in terms of like those gadgets and all about really high tech stuff that's one thing I'm noticing for sure and people are willing to invest actually commit to their health and they carve out the time to do it it's like an essential part of health grandma being whereas people like Silvio treatments I think a lot on the east coast is like relaxation or it's like going in there too got these results I just couldn't believe how that product lab like the other thing interesting say that is the Aslam pair college it here they are taking that really seriously fake obviously yes words influence is so strong do you feel the non extensions or not a as big of a thing people got them but it's more like to fill out like that that Aslam pair that sort of started on the runway like last spring really trickled down here but more from ka-shing I'm sure you know how the function wearing that hair is always like this the thing is like y'all obviously can't see what I'm doing I'm sitting up really great with good posture and I'm taking my hand in like brushing underneath hair to get it out of my face like that's all they can do to get it out of base they can't talk it behind your ears because as much as you say that because I went to see ac musk graves two different times who I love Golden Hour a love her and she onstage I couldn't believe that's all she did on I and my friend was like Holy Shit she needs to take on her hair or get another wag or something needs another move cause she's wearing these like great jumpsuits like easing makeup and just every time it's like this influences ever not yeah right influential quarterly chronicle things like going to the bathroom cooking like obviously pull my hair can you hold my hair I would love to ask Casey Mass Graves Yada you sit on the pot the thing that you put your hair or maybe it's just takes it off the hair allies it shange holder Dolly Parton has that great line and they're like when people ask her how long it takes to do her hair she's just like I don't like you can call me down blonde but domino not blonde like a f- sure sure yeah so good okay so what's our next question well we both have similar backgrounds we were more in magazines and you guys were more digital also but I think like you guys go on press trips all the time in that right so what's the craziest thing that's ever happened or on a shoot let's start spelling Ah to feel the biggest difference between press trips for print and like press trips for digital especially now and the fact that we live in okay is that it's all like influence trips and then Carina will like get invited to a reliable launch trip because it's like there's such a big spectacle to it and it's so much fun yeah how ever I remember when benefit launched not brasler found her pro yeah broadcom "What you hear on CBS sports radio? Appreciate you tuning in the semi busy Saturday. Of football talk that goes back to last week. We start to look ahead to next week senior ball was today. We'll have a guest up to give you the insights of what happened down in mobile. You got the all star hockey game tonight. Yeah. We didn't get into the hall of fame yet with the baseball sending their guys off to Cooperstown this week. And by the way, we're right in the midst of the NBA season Lugovoi, the trade deadline all star games going to be here before you know, it gonna talk about both of those things would our next guest from the NBA dot com. And I gotta tell you his Twitter handle is one of the best. I've ever heard at Powell POW EL AL, the number two DA people would have capital P Powell to the people Sean Powell from NBA dot com joins us here on CBS sports radio. How are you shawny? Hey, man. Thanks for that intro. Appreciate it. I think that's one of the better Twitter handles I've ever seen just being honest with the folks. And I need to be honest with you. The NBA players embarrassed themselves greatly this week in my eyes. They were leased the numbers on who the NBA players voted for for the all star starter. So those who don't know the all-star starters to selected by a group of three the fans get fifty percent of the vote. The media gets twenty five percent and the players get twenty five percent of the vote and every player is allowed to vote for ten all-star starters. One hundred and one different players got votes some votes that haven't even played or barely blade in the first half in the NBA, and they're getting votes over legitimate starters who they were eventually selected, and I think the ten best players most deserve it probably got the nod. But no, thanks to the NBA players who some just used their ballots to four to five brand camps, and or return favors or pay off bats. That's the only way I can look at it. Are you as outraged by the lack of importance that the NBA players have put on their responsibility of voting for NBA all stars? I wouldn't use the term outrage. But I am amused. Because for so long you hear layers, and sometimes coaches about how voting and all star teams awards and things like that belong to the players because they know the game. And while I certainly don't question that when you have great numbers of people voting in anything they're going to be in equities. They're going to be fall. So there'd be some people who just aren't taking it seriously. So I think it really has to do with the amount of players voting when you get back. You're going to have you know, somebody's gonna vote for both basically. I think bozo. Got four votes. I might three. But I think he got four as a matter of fact. Yeah. Had no idea it really annoys the snot out of me because you're right there had been second guessing media and fans in previous votes for varying awards yet when given the chance to actually have a say in it some of them just make ridiculous elections. And yes, it did bother me a great deal despite that I said, I think that through the fans and the media's and no help to the players. They did get the ten best guys by best players knees. Five best players in the west. And they're going to broadcast the LeBron youngest draft this year. Which is a good thing. They probably should have done it last year. But they didn't know I was going to work out this year. They decide we could guide and broadcasting which is a good thing for TNT. Is the NBA all star game going to be fun this year? We've only got to start a we still got reserved jet to go. But as the draft on TV going to work for you. Yeah. Because it basically puts a camera onto the whole process, and we get to see how the sausage is made. And I think that's good. Yeah. There's gonna be some I'm not gonna use the word of embarrassment because how would you how would you be embarrassed by being chosen to the all star team? However, there's gonna be some distinction to the player who used to be the last thing. I can tell you one thing that player who's going to be a last could be thankful. He's he's gonna be there. It just removes all the mystery from it. We get to see how the brand really feels about his peers we'll get to see Janas and in that kind of situation where it's all new to him. And I hopefully, hopefully it'll be entertaining as well. I think they get a chance to have a big time winner here with this. We'll see how they actually produce it. Now, the guys themselves produce, I think LeBron will probably be pretty good. Does the fact that he hadn't played in a while have any effect on it? He may be able to get into a game before Thursday night. My guess is not does that diminish at it, all in your mind. No because first of all deserving. She's had an incredible year even notes that interrupted and also the game itself. I don't get the idea that players who could go into the game a little bit gimpy they don't take chances. I don't think you'll see LeBron James playing may have heavy minute. He made himself out of there might be a minute restriction. And but I also believe that by van hopefully for the Lakers safe healthy. Now, they need him back in the worst way, Sean Powell from MBA dot com. Our guest here on CBS sports radio. We're a little under two weeks from the NBA trade deadline. I'll be honest with tickets have been a little underwhelming as far as buzz goes doesn't always dictate the amount of activity. You're going to get between the trade deadline. Sometimes there's a lot of buzz. No trade sometimes there's no buzz, and it ends up being a flurry of activity looking into your trade. Crystal ball, how active will it will? It. Will it won't? Will it not be between now and February seventh? I never I I don't judge the trade that line by the amount of activity. I do judge the amount of big names and ball players who can who essentially swing boats, basically, go from one team to another and enhance that team's chances of going deep in the playoffs or even winning a championship. Now, I think in this trade that deadline it could be a little boat. I think there could be a decent amount of activity, but I just don't see any big names involved. I mean, you're talking about matching contracts up before you can make a deal you're talking about teams, basically saying that, you know, we can't win until about a tank, which you know, of the teams that could tank with the exception of the New Orleans pelicans. I don't see any of those teams willing to trade a big player. I don't see it, for example, the Washington Wizards. And look they're right on the edge of a been a top eight and ease, but I don't see the wizard. Trading, Bradley Beal. I think they'll keep him. So after of that asked him if any big names, I think it'll be rabbit born fair enough. Do you think with the trade deadline being just twelve days away? If there is a lack of activity part of it is because teams would rather go down the buyout road. And see if there's a veteran guy who'll give them back a certain amount of his salary just to get out from underneath and be able to join the playoff team of his choice. Yeah. That's something could be the case. Usually if there's a buyout player not going to be tough show. Oh, I would be remiss by the way to not to discuss the Memphis grizzlies with Markelle soul, and my com Bari said publicly that they will listen to offer hasn't meaning I'll be traded. But they will listen to offers for the life of me. And I looked at this a million ways. I can't see how either of those two players will fetch a lot for the grizzlies and in a better rebuilding mode in my colleagues make an out of money. He was player in the NBA a couple of years ago when he signed his contract, and then Markelle soul has an escape thought. He can he can escape his contract for next year. And so therefore you're just renting him so that complicates things contract. As I said before. Always complicated by contracts players are making too much money or players rentals. And in those situations. You know, those are usually deal breakers for a lot of teams is there any chance the Sixers walkaway from by trading. Jimmy butler. No. I don't think they'll do anything like that. You know, they feel that the team they have right now. Gives them the best shot at born deep in the playoffs. Another thing, you know, Jimmy Butler is can be a free agent to summit again get back to the contract situation. You know, what teams wanna rent Jimmy Butler for three months? Yeah. I bought these Jimmy Butler. He's you know, he's got the trail of a question. You know, when he was in Chicago. In Minnesota and even with coach Brett Brown briefly. I guess in Philadelphia. So you know, chemistry is a delicate thing your contracts is big deal. So I don't see anything happening Jimmy Butler between now and next summer. Join power from the NBA dot com. Our guest here on CBS sports radio. I started s- developed over the last couple of hours Milwaukee's got the best record in the east tablet in unbelievable year. Probably these surprise team of the NBA nuggets. Could certainly argue for that position as well. But I even go bucks added the nuggets yet, not everybody's happy. They're done maker making waves and say, and I'm glad my teams good. But it's kind of squeezed me out if I'm going to be getting so few minutes here. The bucks might be well advised to deal me. I'll specifically ask for that. Milwaukee gonna respond today act today just hope that this rolls over and they can keep maker in the part time Rowley has how do you think Don in the bucks workout? Well, I just can't imagine a lot of teams beaten down the walkie store for fun maker. No fence, but he really hasn't shown much in his time in the NBA. And it's not like he has to beat out a ton of competition to get play on the front line in Milwaukee. You know, and he's young athletic, but he just really haven't developed. He he's not that much better. Now. And again, you know, teams aren't going to give up a lot for a player like him. And they haven't seen anything yet. Sure. Could you go to a better situation and and show some growth? Absolutely. But I don't think Milwaukee's gonna get a lot for x. Milwaukee were to look to deal and they were looking for a specific player with a specific skill. I'm not talking about a star player. I'm talking somebody who can make three somebody who can play perimeter defense. Somebody who can come off the bench as a backup point guard to distribute the best boy is there anything specific that if Milwaukee said all right enough for Don maker, they could get a reasonable role player to fill a specific. Void for them. I would imagine if they can get some lack of rim-protector that would be good. Now. Look, I mean their defense is among the best in the NBA right now. But you know, they're they're center plays mostly gonna perimeter. And there's not much of a rebounder. So that's probably all this team is missing. I think they're okay point guard Brompton even on this handles the ball little bit. They have the they have the superstar..

"Obviously in in the line of work that you do really like like an amazing fucking life like life could not be better. I thought we were on top of the world. I literally thought we had we had this down, Pat. This was this was couldn't get any better. Couldn't get better. You were Dr you're making money, and you're helping people you're living, your, profession and your passion. I was leading you're leading. And your wife was supporting you, you you had a romantic relationship and joy and love. And then inside of that, you would you would teach all that to your kids. Yeah. So so yeah. Literally on top of fucking whore. Like untouchable, and then comes in tragedy this out of fucking it. Like it was out of nowhere a newer my wife had been training for a half marathon. It we thought she was healthy as a horse. We had no idea. This was this was going to go down. And then so this heads home talked to us about the process. What happened first of all? All what happened to you? When you received the news, what happened to the kids? And then how did you how did you lead? Because of course, you have to you have to make sure that you carry all the pain. Yeah. So that the kids don't carry it. Although they carried anyway. So I I remember this very clearly I was in my office seeing patients, and I got a phone call from my mother-in-law telling me that my wife shawny was found unconscious at home and that they were bringing in by by ambulance. And of course, I said to my staff, I'm leaving. I'm out of here. And I ran out the door and literally flew the hospital couple of blocks away and met the ambulance there. And I remember seeing her pretty much lifeless on that gurney, and they rolled her in and they immediately rolled her into the cat scanner because she was completely nearly unresponsive and me being a doctor and seeing what what showed up on that screen, and realizing that there was a hell of a lot of blood where did not belong. I immediately doubled over. I was on the floor. I was bawling my eyes. I've screaming uncontrollably. And it was it was it was it was a shock. And once you. Once you found out about this. Like, how was I was the news announced to your wife. And also, I was the news announced your family and like talk about that meant. Well. So so once we realized that she had this bleed. Of course, the kids were completely unaware would happen. They were in school to time. And we didn't tell them we actually didn't tell me said to them. Their mother was sick. She was in the hospital. We didn't want to worry them because we didn't know what was going on yet. In fact, actually, the doctors had absolutely no clue they thought there was possibly a tumor there. They weren't sure. And finally when the dust to settle and she started becoming more cognizant more aware, and they realized that there was a tumor there. That's when we lead the children to come in when she was more awake. And is this in the third congressional district on? Is it with a okay? And so we've had cherise David's on the podcast before. So our listeners may be familiar with her and the incredible campaign that she's running. And so presumably that has some down ballot hopefully effects for you as well as people excited to vote for her also one of for you and also vice versa. Yeah. Yeah, I've been. I was on the early Cherie team and we had a really crowded primary by one of the reasons I was drawn to her is she really takes questions and sees them with nuance and answers in really often into quays, and that really resonates with me because that's kind of the way I do in my answer things. And I think about things. I try to answer. I try to see things from a lot of different perspectives centuries have been such an advocate for groups that we just haven't heard from in Kansas or nationally in are being told that their voices don't matter. So I've been really excited about her and really look forward to working with an excellent woman governor with Laura Kelly and being able to do some great stuff with. I'm really middle of the road, moderate democrat here in Kansas like Mara soup lit. What are you hearing from people as you talk to constituents? You know what sort of the the mood around your district in terms of what? What are the issues that people are concerned with and and what are they? How are they responding to your campaign? The issues that people brought up a helmet doorstep, and we've, we've talked about eight thousand doors. We hear a whole lot of people that start by talking about our Kansas public schools and in grave concern for them, even people who don't have children in schools anymore. And one woman in our district used. A line that I've been using ever since which was Kansas, doesn't have mountains or oceans, but we have great public schools, and that's what draws people to us. And people feel very strongly. It's palatable that we have mental core, Jim of who we are as Kansan 's, and they really want there's bad since of quiet, polite, midwest outrage, and that we need to get back to just the moderate people that we were extremism from any corner is no welcome him. People feel very exhausted by the ideological warfare. We've been drawn through in my district after that. The number one thing after we talk about public school, people go immediately to healthcare in our district. We are above the Kansas average. So more fluid more educated district than the rest of Kansas and people are a lot of them are. Healthcare professionals, and they've talked about it from both the personal standpoint, as well as the professional simply that we are a civilized society that had figured out the basic principles how how to care for one another when health is not always guaranteed and we should do better and we can to better so women, the issue that's come up and in regards to state policy is expanding Medicaid. We have not been successful in doing that. It passed in the last two years ago in the legislative session and that it was veto by Brownback and the veto was not able to be over ridden by just a few votes which was devastating for working families and Kansas who are often making minimum wage. It's it's it's restraint knowing when to hold them, know when to fold them kind of thing. So. And I think that they segues really nicely into the beginning of the next episode, which is web, Brian comes back from travel council and says. To dual. Now we've already touched on, but I just want to kind of go through the reasons why I call. On Brian on that moment because that is one hundred percent north one happen and and I would love to maybe the finale I'm going to press through him, but like I would love to be like, dude, it's just you and me. No one's listening just you You can can just just say. say, you can say. Because this is what happens. You happen to travel council econ. Talk to explain what happened, then have the whole journey back to camp where you're in lockdown told you on the letter token to you walk back into camp. He has there about how long Henry, half an hour, an hour maybe longer to formulate exactly what he's going to say when he camera when the producer pools him over in the middle of the night to go and see over and talk about his view on on what happened. He definitely been caught it an idea that about him doing it on purpose and give him credit. You have to do that because you have to make it look like to shawny, have to protect your image to shawny great. But what I will not abroad is lying to the audience. Mata shawny loss. Ahead. Bows? Well. Didn't know that the auto. And if you knew then maybe like econ kinda. Yeah, for sure. And on tweeted out, full reasons Henry. So why this was a complete live one. He did not imply that he that was the plan when he was voting in the voting booth. And I showed his vote at no point in the voting booth before will go down when no one else can hear him. Did he mention anything about number two? He had no idea that Sean had the auto and that was going to happen yet. Absolutely. No idea that we know of. And number three, he tried to bring Fanilo and shawny in on the plan of voting three full. Fish on. So that's another point against and the loss. Most biggest, the biggest fun. He is that in the next episode, he doesn't follow through on this plan that he's apparently put in motion of going to the end with shine and Monica because he ends up voting fishing. It's just. That's like, let's not insult intelligence grey zone. Just had to get it was just ROY. Was one of those like, like you said about line to the audience? Nothing that's walked. Irritates anyone watching when you just can Kobo shit. Yet they and this the show tells you that like when you go out there and just before you play a lot of this audience lies much as you want to the place, and I think that's a really good metric because if you start lying to the audiences will like in your confessionals that's a really nail your net now playing like two different games that you're trying to reconcile and you'll Brian is enough laws as it is drawn. Keep track. O-. I want to move on to talking about Monica because this is the episode where she does go home and what have you thoughts on Monica this season. With more in confessionals, definitely think is being on -tunities to show more of images describing the basic things. But yes, she's going well, but I guess it was just kind of she couldn't win is based on the. They're always pip, I guess, and stuff like that. I don't know why she would have been long to balanced, but I think this she's a bit of an enigma for the people out. There feel is people that just don't quite understand. I got tickets for you to the upcoming Melinda Doolittle show. We're now being joined by libertarian candidate. Chris Powell who is joining us on NewsRadio one thousand Katie. Okay. He's going to be on the ballot along with drew Edmonson. And Kevin Stitz. Chris why don't you? Go ahead. And just give us what you what your platform for the governorship would be well as libertarian I'm for all. All of the rights of all the people all the time. I specifically for the governor's race. We've been talking a lot about education about the idea that we need to get the control away from twenty third and Lincoln and back down to the local districts within reach of parents, and teachers parents teachers and students are involved in the education process. And that's neat is who needs to have the decision making power not a bunch of politicians at the capitol. We also need to pursue criminal Justice reform. We have the highest incarceration rate in the nation, and that's unacceptable both on moral and financial grounds. So we need to really pursue meaningful criminal Justice reform. So that we can work on fixing that and stop putting people into the prison system that shouldn't be there in the first place. So that they have an opportunity to be to continue to be productive citizens. Both for. Themselves and for the rest of us. We put people in the prison system, and they come out a lot more dangerous than when they went in. That's not helping anybody. So we need to pursue them. And then we also need to work on our state budget. Overall, we hundreds of millions of dollars in corporate welfare and money that's going to special interest. We have state agencies that are mismanaged and full of waste because we've had a governor who's been asleep at the switch the past eight years. So we need to address both of those things. So that we can fund core services. Well, have those services delivered? Well, and that way we can do things with the things that we need to do that the people of the state expect their state government to do without having to consider things like tax increases and things like that. Chris Powell libertarian candidate for governor. He will be on the ballot on November the sixth on NewsRadio one thousand Katie. Okay. Chris how how here the libertarian party in more states than it? It doesn't seem to be as prominent here in Oklahoma. What do you think that is? Well, I think it's actually really more well known than it is in some other states. You know, you love Gary Johnson's. Resulted in two thousand sixteen we were I think the fourth highest percentage for him in the nation. So the we we're we're doing a little bit better. Now, it, you know, there is the problem that we have not been on the ballot for before two thousand sixteen the last time we were on the ballot was two thousand because the laws that prevented us keep getting on the ballot. Where some of the worst in the nation. Later. You know, one thing I do have to credit the legislature for is that they did change those laws and now we're able to participate and run candidates. So yeah, we're here. We just haven't been before the people on election day. Now, we are. And now, we're we've got this opportunity to really build on the libertarian mindset of Oklahoma of, you know, personal responsibility and go from there to really build a party that's going to be a permanent part of the political landscape here, Chris Powell candidate for governor. He's on the la- tip of the libertarian ticket. And we'll be on the ballot Chris where can people learn more about you and about your platform? Are they can go to pow for governor dot com. There's a lot of information there, obviously, you know, if you do a Google search of Chris Paul for governor and Oklahoma, then you can find all kinds of things where I've been on in the media newspapers TV that kind of thing. So you know, there's a lot out there to find also on Facebook for governor and on Twitter. So there's those kinds of things are are out there for people to find. If I want to look for if I may Chris Paul because I've been hosting this program now for going on ten years, and they're especially in the last six eight months, there have been some really hot issues that have bubbled to the surface that I think are concerning the people of Oklahoma. And if I may just to get your opinion on these issues, maybe one at a time are you up for that? Absolutely. We certainly had a big issue recently with teacher pay and I think related to that. Is how the school system is how we have so many districts in one of the things that I talk about is until we find a way to conglomerate some of these districts. I don't know that we're gonna have a solution. So what is your take on teacher pay and making the education system better? Well, obviously, I think we've had an issue with our teachers not being paid adequately. They certainly think so I think most of the state agrees with that that our teachers have not been sufficiently well paid. But if we think that money is the only thing that's going to solve this problem. That's that's wrong. I you look at the survey hammer teachers that is the education has done every year. It was done back in January. It's available on their website. You might have to search for it. But two thirds of those teachers those former teachers said it would take more than money you could get them back in the classroom. And that's really what that is is their ability to control the classroom there the lack of respect for what they do and the abilities and education that they have. And of course, you know, if you're in a bad work situation, if you're not happy with your work environment. The easiest thing to do is ask for Rex. But what we really need to do is empower these teachers to run their own classrooms. You know, you look back at house Bill ten seventeen and there's all these so-called reforms. Some of those like clown sizes keeping class sizes slow we've we've gone away from that over the years, but the two things that have stuck are the state designing curriculum and mandating testing, well, nobody at twenty third and Lincoln knows your child the teacher in that classroom knows your child, and it's going to know a lot better. How to go about testing? Whether they're learning the material designing and the material. So it's going to be better able for them to absorb it. Those kind of things we need to trust our teachers, and that's going to go a long way to fix things, you know, as far as teacher paced. Typically, we have our teacher pay schedule. And that what that does is it creates a wage floor. No, other almost no other state. Does it this way the states all around us? Don't do it this way. And they all more pay more than we do because they leave it up to the districts, and that that makes the district's have to pay the market rate rather than saying, oh, the state says this is what we pay. So until we trust our districts until we trust our local teachers to make these decisions we're going to continue to have the same kind of problems that we have now it's Chris Powell libertarian candidate for governor on NewsRadio one thousand T. Okay. Big issue this past spring was constitutional carry voted in by the legislature. Vetoed by the current governor your stance on constitutional carry I would have signed it. And as governor I will call on the legislature to send it back to me. A right to bear arms. A what I think is really a legal codification of the basic human right to defense is a right. And we need to recognize that here in the state of Oklahoma. Another big hot issue was legalization of not medical marijuana since that passed but recreational marijuana where do you and the libertarian party stand on that? Well, since nineteen seventy one when we were founded the libertarian party has been for full decriminalization of cannabis. We that's not something that we need to waste law enforcement resources and prison resources on putting people into the prison system because they choose to use a plant that humans have used for thousands of years. It's it destroys lives and it waistline. So we need to continue on the path that we're moving we need to make sure that we do it right along the way and make sure that we don't go too fast and things like that that would create a situation where we're trying to get to a positive thing. And we create a negative result for ourselves. In the meantime, but we need to move continued. To move in that direction. Chris Paul with us. Newsradio one thousand Katie. Okay. Libertarian candidate for governor in tied into that kind of dovetailed anyway, prescription drug and the opioid crisis crisis. Do you see a solution? Well, obviously if with medical marijuana available that's going to help with the opiate opioid crisis. Because fewer people are going to have to rely on those farmers pharmaceuticals. If they have another option available to them. It's also the case that we need to look at that more as a public health issue. One of the things about opioids is that you know, they get prescribed. And then we do all these things to crack down, and we use a law enforcement approach, and then that causes a lot of our doctors to say, well, I'm not going to prescribe that anymore, and they've already got the people hooked. And so then those people are addicted because of the way the farmer pharmacological the medical situation has been and then they get cut off. And that's when they start looking for illegal sources, and they get products that are adulterated with sentinel and other things that that's where your overdoses Cup from. So we need to stop trying to. Use it law enforcement approach and scare everybody, and which just drives people into legal markets. We need to look at it as a public health approach and find ways to divert people from addiction. And like, I said, I think you know, the availibility a medical marijuana is gonna help a lot with that. Chris paul. I hope we can have you back in between now and the election time libertarian candidate for governor. And once again, where people can learn more about you and your platform alpha governor dot com.

Yeah, I definitely think shawnee and fair Lewis. Sided with Haith, and I think he can say by vanilla voiding to save may. That she wanted to work with our safe. She didn't. She would have sent me hiring and that's something that you know I'm going to ask the gills in when it's all done in dusted vet. Yeah. I mean, I really, I really believe that I was working with him. And yeah, I think that we would have gotten in one of the boys. Michelle, gold says that I'm watching from Canada. I'm so proud to see Teague in representing mums out there. So that's an awesome comment. You and pay by Pacific Games. Did you ever wish that you played the way that the other one did? So do you ever wish that you'd played more of a page game that was kind of more individual and not as seen as such a power? Couple with. Yeah. I mean, hope the power couple liable for made was very confusing just particularly on our season because schone and Fennell Benji Roby and in and I will always working in pairs and we all kind of lost people within out groups. Shawny availa. Listen, Ataur Zach was gone from the boys and weight loss Geno and so I may was probably working. I didn't really know where where she was working bid. Yeah, I guess. Yeah. I mean, I got to style longer than guy my fly. Yeah, it's tricky. It's a tricky one to answer because you always we should done things differently at haunt slot. Austin says, if Rabin Benji saved you, would you have been willing to work with them long term yet? Definitely li- tight what you can get if I don't, if I'd Saif me for sure that would show that I want to work Mason. That means that I would have a little bit more trust in them. Had it made him, I probably wouldn't have side them. So. Last question eve, Joe says, did you already know who you wanted to sit with at the end? And would you have taken hate to the final trouble? Yeah. I mean, obviously hates the very obvious option for may. I think I honestly think I could have beaten anyone in travel and on that sounds cocky as hell pot, I don't think if you can't sit next to someone that has plied, whatever sort of a guy and say that you could bake them, obviously, there's people you think you should pay more than another bit. Yeah, I would have been happy to sit next to hate that. I think Peyton him. Sorry, I would have been sitting next to. Almost. Here. It's just got to get it in the end, I guess. Yeah, I see getting in a perfect situation in what world, but I get to the end with Haight anyway. Sorry, I wasn't thinking that down down that far just at this point to you, that brings us to the end as a pretty epic d think, and I think we uncovered ever. I've definitely come away with a lot of interesting information..

"Fennell in shawny who have more poll in the tribe than we thought, but that was what we were presented with, at least in terms of how the page boat went down. Yeah, I feel like they definitely like it. You think you hit the nail on the head that Teagan and heath teeth as we've been so refreshing leaving closely teeth is they have to just go with with what? What, what if anyone wants, and in that instance? Yes. I like that. He said, look, I think you should be Benji and I will nothing Zach, right? Let's make Zach like we also Constanze back. We're all saying getting rid of one of the votes the that's working with Benji. So I think that they made the right move there. The second vote is a whole whole other thing, but I think I made the right move for Fanilo and shawny. I really think that Teagan and he made a couple of mistakes going going through this double episodes. One of the things that I thought was. Interesting. Was that in any part of it was like, okay, Benji is clearly spooked. He may have an auto. Let's just put on on back Jack, and there was any part of that that could have been the thought process. I mean, that's possible also. I mean, I was more confused about Benji and Robbie also voting for xactly who tipped them off. This is why I think Chanel have so much power in this tribe that once they started the bowl rolling, I think that they just everyone just kinda jumped on board and it's festival. It's crazy that there's been so many unanimous votes off to heath just out unanimous vote with an auto. That is insane to me. But what's happening is wherever shawnee and Fanilo going, everyone is jumping on board because I really do think we've got these two sides that while they're voting together, voted together by choice voted together because they both want shawny and Fanilo. So whatever, shawnee and Fennell do as long as it isn't specifically one person in each of those Piz they're going to do it, and that is why Zack has gone home. That is what page is going high because we saw that shawnee was so..
