"You're listening to the Sean Pendergast show you can tweet me at Shanti Pendergast at Shanti Pendergast here Sean Pendergast yes indeed on a Sunday evening good at you with us eight five five two one two four two two seven is the number to get in on the show gravel line we're gonna be wide open open lines final hour of the show so will get you and get you on and you can sound off on what's going on with baseball basketball getting ready to go into the bubble and NFL football and obviously a lot to get to the NFL football with my next guest he has covered the NFL for the better part of forty years many of those with the Houston Chronicle and he is part of the crew the pixel hall of fame every year he's been doing it a long long time one of the best and you can find him on Twitter at McLean underscore on underscore NFL John McClain joining me on CBS sports radio John how you doing this evening what I'm doing right now if you had a happy father's day if you tell your listeners about your three kids who have or will graduate from Baylor TCU at Harvard I would say I think I I haven't mentioned I mentioned the three kids tonight John reading ghost civically into their their resumes but as you know I'm very proud of him so I don't mind you putting it out there for me of course well I think your listeners would be interested in that and so I hope you have a great day I have John I have in that yeah I mean I'd say happy father's day to you because you're like a father to so many of us in this in this business is whether the very least the cool uncle John so happy father's day to you as well thank you very much John yeah so John lets some let's get into this stuff movie corona virus showing up on the on the front stoop of some of these NFL teams course the Texans here in Houston the cowboys the Buccaneers Kareem Jackson in Denver those are just the ones that that that I'm recalling off the top of my head John is these players begin to report positive for the corona virus and we know that the NFL's been doing all kinds of stuff behind the scenes to get ready for the season working with top medical experts do you think this was something that they expected or was this something that the this news maybe shook them a little bit and sent them back to the drawing board no I think it's something I expected I think there are other can instead of bad players test positive and B. they don't they're not required to announce it you know there could be twenty or thirty two chains that positive tests for the qualifiers in where the landslide should come is when they report to training camp you know the NFLPA said yesterday recommended players not working out together well players across the league are or have been working out together including the Texans other town not to do it you know these young guys have been out party and they don't care about social distancing and that's why when they show up yeah and all of them get a chance to remember right now the only players and as the show the other ones were allowed to go there because they're having some surgery so this is Jermaine nothing compared to what's coming our column is waking we talked about it on sports radio six man I think positive test for over nineteen is going to be as common as hamstring injuries NFL dressing okay well we know that hamstring injuries don't shut down an entire season or don't force a team to not travel for a game or not have you maybe have an opponent not wanna play them because they're been multiple hamstring injuries do you think it gets handled in a similar way in that teams just keep trudging forward or is there gonna be a certain threshold where not only the team but maybe the league sits up and takes notice somebody asked major one point do they not bloody hazard when it right field change so the key is to encourage the rosters of are you crazy the practice squad and Bruce Arians was the first to talk about quarterback being sworn change probably this all you can add the Shawn Watson or Patrick Mahomes tested positive right before the first game on Thursday night and then they've been at quarterback one with the other quarterbacks and maybe they're all transpires they know what the league is hoping to do is you get a chance to get themselves back the next day in the end that's not available to the public for a long time we get active like it wasn't not doing anything the one available to the public and it's not so that's why I think and I believe this will happen whether it's the practice squad holds that the roster there will be a quarterback and you better get a kicker to who are going to be on a separate failed in a separate dressing right into watching meetings on soon and they're they're they're needed and I'd better increased you also do something like that or they're not and they're just asking for a catastrophe John do you think a lot of these players are out here you know doing things in the off season that involved very little social distancing with the idea that this is gonna sound weird but maybe they think with the idea that Hey if I get the cold food before the season then off to worry about it during the season knowing full well that it impacts full in their age group minimally compared to how it impacts you know older guys like you and me I would think that the young guys especially the young single guys they're they're not they're thinking about it think about when we were that age about all the things we did that we weren't supposed to do I think a lot of thank O. corona viruses like the flu I get it I'll get over it the problem is they have to be quarantine and when you portray numbers like you have an injury but this time you can't participate when you're have an injury you can be intimidating you can be out watching practice administration cannot so there's so much to come of this I believe this job there's not a big corporations games update to maximum they need more time to get ready considering they haven't been able to work out with colleges and I think the NFL will give them more time the NFL is all kind of contingency plans but I think the NFL is so easier to operate compared to college football which has you know hundred forty programs and when you see these monster numbers coming from schools like Clemson and LSU then it's scary to think about the ones that are out there our positive chancellor not transparent I did not announce them but the NFL you know they're not gonna be in a bottle that would be impossible but they think they have a better chance of controlling it and if they can't control it nobody can cause the NFL issues always willing to spend millions and millions to make sure this season comes off yeah I guess that maybe the luxury John we're talking to John McClain of the Houston Chronicle the TV intervals the luxury of time for one thing in yeah I I would think compared to baseball like even if the NFL doesn't have fans in this in the stands for part of the season or maybe even all of the season it's TV contracts are so robust that it's I I don't know that we're talking about nearly the sort of stand off the baseball he's having with its players what do you think of some of the things that football might do if they're no fans in the stands what are some things you think they might do to try to make up that revenue shortfall well first of all I think the TV ratings with the record breaking ratings there are couple of raisin all the plans that are the only games will be watching also think they should do things like put ads in the states where you pay more money that went against Brian you can see the ads by the benches there's been talk about putting things on players uniforms likely that the switch on for years thanks to help them offset the loss of the season.

"You're listening to the show and Pendergast show you can tweet at Shanti Pendergast Shanti Pendergast years shown Pendergast eight five five two one two for CBS you wanted on the show takes more phone calls a little later on we should everybody tuning in on a Sunday evening happy father's day out there too all you too all you dads hopefully baseball can give us something to smile about here in the near future but it looks like the vote of the players union is being put on hold now is the health and safety protocols get evaluated with the corona virus popping up at several spring training facilities over the weekend joining us right now to talk about baseball and where it's at right now is the former president of the Miami Marlins who now covers Major League Baseball first CBS sports network CBS sports HQ David Samson joining me right now on CBS sports radio David happy father's day appreciate you make it in time for the show how are you I'm doing great my pleasure how you doing I'm doing fantastic so at this point David with the latest news on where baseball is that with this negotiation because it they seem to be getting closer in terms of the number of games that each side is it wants as part of this package but now the coronavirus has become a major storyline in this whole thing right now is this season in more danger because these two sides can't get along or the more danger because of the health and safety issues so I'm preparing my shall I have no problem nothing personal which is the podcast for CBS yeah the on video and at the very bottom are out and I was thinking of a song that represents what's going on in baseball and the first money can't buy mine was Paula Abdul opposites attract is step forward and two steps back them and that's really what's been going on between the owners and the players any kind of progress you're going up the roller coaster then you're going back down and around and around he goes and the irony of it all is that even with an economic agreement they would not be able to be in spring training right now because the coronavirus so we can't even though it is twenty twenty he's an Israeli in jeopardy unfortunately and the soul I'm curious then just fast forward a little bit here whether it's in jeopardy over the two sides not agreeing or two sides or or the the the coronavirus either way obviously that's a huge financial hit to the sport can you take us as someone who's been part of these conversations before I'm sure when you were in a leadership role with the Marlins what are the folks on the personnel side doing right now to sort of plan things out for the next couple years how difficult is it to plan things like free agency and contracts with your own guys because there's a looming CBA negotiation as well what are those conversations like inside the building how difficult are those conversations right now so we have to do is we would have a three and one three and five year pay well and we would look at what the numbers were we look at the service time of our players we look at our minor league system and we would delay names with natural raises are when players went to an arbitration and we would expect that some players the media creation eight we have a pay wall and we would talk to the owner Hey this is where headed this is why we want to find a certain player because he and what we're trying to do and I've been thinking that right now there is no team president you can go to one owner with any sort of sign because there is so much economic uncertainty the likes of which never existed in my eighteen years in the game and never had the if the if the Spanish flu only because how do you know there's going to be stand next year in two thousand twenty one would get a possible labor stoppage workshop in June two thousand twenty two which is definitely possible the fact is the entire economic landscape is so uncertain that I would not go to my owner and inject anything the what the gems are doing now is they're very much focused on short term deals which is why I don't think you've been in the long term the agent killed some of the better J. T. Realmuto or markets Roman or any of your travel balanced and it will only sign one year deal and the irony is I'm pretty sure that's all any of these guys are gonna be up okay that's interesting David Sampson former executive for the Miami Marlins former team president and also in covering MLB right now for CBS sports net David so I guess for example I live in Houston and before the corona virus hit big talk in the offseason was hate George Springer he's heading into his last year he's probably one of if not the most popular players on the team he's the leader of that team is sort of the heart beat of that team but I think a lot of people here were concerned say back in January a year from now George Springer's gonna leave because there's only so many of these guys are Jim crane can pay is there actually a better chance now that you're the guy like George Freeman a silver lining in all this if your team it did routes for certain players that are heading into free agency is there a better chance now that a guy like that would just stick with the team that is where I think there's a better player than Medicaid qualified office the B. acts as well offering him a qualified operator they can get an extended and the real question you're asking is whether Springer and his representative will be able to adjust their expectations and recognize that they're not going to get what they thought they were gonna get in terms of years or annual value and if implemented the player that is not good right now but if you stick it out another year and it'll all be okay one is the new CBA I think all of these guys will choose one year hello deals if you well which is why the access would have an advantage on a qualifying offer sampling a lot from the eighteen million seventeen million for the year and he could very well take it and then going to free agency a year after when there may be more interesting so rob Manfred is catching all kinds of heat obviously for everybody I think any time this sport is like this and if it's you trying to get back on the field especially in the day in Adrian right now where we have an at sports in forever and there's this pandemic going on that everybody's just map you know from a fans in a media sample words mattered everybody right now if they can't get this thing back on to the field so rob Manfred I think any commission would be catching a lot of heat for boy there are a lot of it feels like they have a lot of missteps along the way by men for can you grade his performance during this labor negotiation so I was involved in helping to become commissioner so I want to give you that disclaimer okay and then I'm gonna give you my honest assessment yep from a negotiating sampling here AT and a from a public relations standpoint and a public facing outward facing performance he did about it the and what he paid for it could be in a negotiating it would be nice if you could raise its public key are great but he's not been given a great hand because they made a critical mistake early and kept doubling down on that and the mistake would make you and at least by the way I'm with you I'm a member of the media that that make me not all believe that July fourth with ever possible when in fact he was never possible and all we did with that up the fans and the media to be disappointed when it didn't happen and that's just the point minutes falling on rob which by the way it's his job to take because of the owners don't have to fill in all regards he's doing his job and he's doing it well but he could have done better from a PR standpoint so you you give them an a for negotiation I'm curious what you thought of him putting.

"Can tweet me at Shanti Pendergast at Shanti Pendergast here's Sean Pendergast we had a caller in the previous segment Todd who's a loyal listener to the show on Sundays he's in Cleveland and I had a really good suggestion about he does little things that can be done by the NFL PSAs it can be done to bring awareness to the things that folks can do African American folks can do to help further their cause in their communities and things like that and it got me thinking I forgot to bring this up after I hung up with him and it's going to sound a little counterintuitive I'm gonna sound like I'm contradicting myself a little bit because I just got done saying that I'm not wild about any of the politicians and that's just the truth I just think having politicians are sleazy I think they're scummy I don't think they have the people's best interest in mind give the people are gonna get things done the people are gonna have to do it especially when it comes to stuff like this now that said I think when you look at little steps that can be taken in can be viewed as positive signs is there a lot of the folks who were part of these protests this week one of the very vocal athletes others encouraging people to register to vote and I know that for somebody just said that while the politicians are going to get it done for you it is so you're saying to register to vote but who cares you vote for you don't think the politicians are gonna get it done I think it's just an indicator of the level of awareness they're in and by the way that's just my own belief you know there's there's twenty people out there that believe their politicians if they are the ones that they back are working on on their on their behalf well I'm not wild about the the the the politicians that are out there right now I do think it's important to register to vote I think it's important to vote and I think the V. V. the focus on that is another small thing that's a good thing like that this is not something that's gonna get fixed overnight I said in the opening the show with the stage now we've all agreed we've got have conversations about this stuff productive conversations that we may not have had before maybe they were not used to having some of it is we need to learn how we actually need to learn how to converse about these things need to learn how not to have social media overreaction be our first trigger point when someone says something we disagree with so learning to converse registering to vote like these are all the little steps they need to be taken in order to get the change you want to get I. eight five five two one two for CBS eight five five two one two four two two seven if you can I guess what I'm saying when it comes to registering to vote and and contradicting my faith in the system is there a to lease an indication of awareness a cute desire to change it you know that that's an indicator of they want to change I don't know that's the Avenue that's actually gonna change it but to me if there's more people out there registering to vote then that's an awareness that we've got things we need to fix in our society and that's a good thing all right let's go back to the phones if I five two one two for CBS let's go to Dallas and talked to Christy Christy you're up on CBS sports radio how are you I'm fine how are you I'm good right so I think a couple of things that are going to kind of bounce around a little bit but I'm not going to take a long time it it turns out did your free situation I think I would I would probably get fully angry when it intrude because Joe should know the city in which he played ball you should know that what makes up that city and so for you to for you to come out and make a statement like bad weather L. times or not it was just down there we just don't not only was it is sensitive but it was just dumb and so now you're retracted and then everything is supposed to be okay and I feel like everybody says what's your policy so everything is supposed to go we're supposed to just to get through said it I was supposed to give him a pass because after all this drew look at what he's done in the community look at all the things he does that in by George has to open up his mouth to let some stupid fall out of it late Chrissy let me let me ask you this what knowing you know drew Brees feels about the flag right how what would you what would you have liked to have heard what would what would have been the answer that you would have wanted to hear within reason like he's obviously not going to say I approve of kneeling for the flag he doesn't feel that way but what would you within the parameters of how he feels about the flag what would have been the right answer for deliveries for you you should have a flat road I'm not just saying you could you he could have said anything just said Hey you know that's that's a really sensitive I think for me personally is just something that I hold in high regard of for myself I believe in I'll always know that this is my personal belief and that's that's just a part of who I am the left that there what Joe did instead was Joe gave us a partial history lesson on the flag in your call alluded to it before the manager just one more time mmhm I have family that also fought in those wars right now I'm in those wars right and they there were lots of men and probably women she had great acts of courage there would never recognize or acknowledge those metals had to be fought for and given to them as long after they were dead so would you should understand being an educated man is that the American flag may have a different meaning for him than it does for some yeah we're always taught to respect that remember that the flag doesn't have the same meanings Sir Gerald watt counterparts if they make for his white you are in the war they came back to a nation that was I'm grateful that I'm grateful they came back after five people to be called okay so I don't like being up let's let's not even that's the truth he never should've called Dale ritualistic completely off of that he should've he maybe he should've just but is also open it up there and left that but we do need a history lesson because all the partial history lesson on what the flag and meant and what it means to some people perceive the phone calls Chris yes that that's it that's a good phone call Arian foster said something similar on the court in front of me he said something similar on me I think it was on one of the barstool podcast late last week where he said he was talking to a conservative Miami TV host to somebody who who is of a conservative point of view and it kind of echoed what Christie said and said you know you did it's the nobody has a monopoly on how to feel about the flag and you know very income from a place of where this you know this country's been very very good to him in some ways and it hasn't been as good to him in in other ways so yeah I I think I think the word disrespectful is what catcher breeze in trouble in here maybe just the intense focus on the flag in that answer as opposed to the focus of what was what was going on around him you know I don't know do you mention this I mean the city drew Brees in obviously very very it just a a huge African American population in New Orleans which I think is what Christie you were referring to when you said that yeah I don't know I mean he's been there fifteen years and he seems like someone who was has been universally beloved by the city of New Orleans I don't know the other people who've been clamoring in New Orleans at your breeze has has a racist side to him these last fifteen years I don't think so so I you know I don't think that there it's and and Christy I'm not saying that your stranger breezes array system to show your view point out the city that he lives in in a big chunk of that city turned on drew Brees for a little while earlier this week four words you know words it in their mind were ignorant words in at the very least were very very ill timed it's a sensitive time man I let's take a let's let's take one more here going to Ohio talked to Vince Vince you're up on CBS sports radio thanks for taking my call that you serve as well back up here thanks I've come across this is by saying this is not my original take but I have to put it to me the other day and I just wanna get your thoughts on it and it was before Roger Goodell put out his video okay only I I think a good way that maybe the NFL can sort of put their money where their mouth is when it comes to this you may try to establish any a committee to reach out to communities and groups that are being affected by these protests being mistreated by if their fellow people basically and it would be a good way to give both current and former players sort of platform voice and resources to sort of work on this issue and reach out to their communities and I think you perfect former player to head up that committee and receiving a job offer personally from Mr get out would be calling captain and I just wanna get your thoughts on the cabinet working for the NFL in that regard so I'm gonna hang up and you take thanks okay thanks Vince I look you know first my courage everybody to think outside the box I think we've learned in the last couple months I think we learned last week that nothing's off the table because I don't know that any of us would have predicted two weeks ago the Roger Goodell would be doing a video talking about black lives matter a meeting the NFL was wrong showing contrition and things like that I am I don't I don't know I think we're a long way off from Colin Capra Nick working felt I think yeah I think we're a baby steps on both sides of that relationship right I say baby steps on both sides I don't you know I don't know the Capper Nick has spoken about the dell statement that he made.

"You're listening to the Sean Pendergast show you can tweet me at Shanti Pendergast at Shanti Pendergast here's Sean Pendergast yeah if you were to tweet at Shanti Pendergrass you're gonna be right there on Twitter we'll get back to the phones you want gravel line now's the time to do it will work through some phone calls as we head towards the top of the hour eight five five two one two for CBS but to talk a lot of football tonight with their gas we've been kinda AFC south heavy as well we had John McClain earlier Joel Eriksson last hour let's get some Titan talking as well I think those are the three relevant teams of three relevant cities in the AFC south Houston Indianapolis and Nashville Terry McCormick is the publisher of Titans insider dot com he joins me on CBS sports radio Terry procedure making some time on a Sunday evening and I I guess my my first question is when the rumors were out there about Tom Brady coming to Tennessee what was that if you put a poll of saying what Titan fans your readers a Titans insider dot com would have wanted at that point when the rumors were hot and heavy about Brady who won that poll between Brady and Tannehill given up Tannehill played for the Titans last year one was pretty even I think there are a lot of people were intrigued by the idea of Tom Brady the all time greatest quarterback many people's lives coming to play for the Titans but I think a lot of people also looked at what Ryan Tannehill geared to the team last year and also the fact that is twelve years younger the Brady and figured that it would be better to stick with him rather than bring in Tom Brady for a couple years so I would say it was it was pretty well split right down the middle it's kind of crazy said you know he is twelve years younger than Brady in your channels like thirty two years old but he's not a young guy he's twelve years younger than they've been then Tom Brady what what did you think of the contract that the Titans gave to Ryan Tannehill well it certainly without popping I think hundred eighteen million dollars over four years averaging about twenty nine and a half million per season obviously it's written in a way where I think the Titans can't move out for a good if things don't work out well they can get out of it and with minimal damage after a couple years but it certainly shows you that wife is good as a quarterback in the NFL especially when it comes time to be paid because Ryan Tannehill got a lot of money I think that a lot of people thought it was going to get even if he got into the open market two people going into last season Terry I think that I don't know that anybody thought the Ryan Tannehill was gonna have this season that he wound up having but going into last season what you know if you were placing odds on it what was the feeling among the Titan faithful but eventually at some point during the season Ryan Tannehill would be taking the reins from Marcus Mariota the sorry about that Hey it's okay I'll just I'll repeat the question will you gather yourself there Terry I was just yeah that's okay that's okay right what what did what did the Titan faithful think about Ryan Tannehill the possibility of him when going into the season last year if they think it was a high likelihood medium do they think Nomar Mariota will finally get it here five years and what what was that was a handicapping on that going into last season no I think a lot of people thought that you know he was just going to be here to be the back up because I think you know given Marcus Mariota's injury history I think people thought it was a good idea to bring him in because you know he was a high level back up an upgrade over Blaine Gabbert you've been here a year before and Matt Cassel who've been here before that so I think it was a situation where not a lot of people thought that right hander would be using much more than an insurance policy but then something slowly started to happen in training camp and preseason because even though ten hills player with the second team a lot of people started to notice that he was he seemed to do better in the office at the Marcus Mario and I know you can't put a lot of stock in the pre season you can't put a lot of stock in the play and you know against died some of whom are going to be selling cars you know after you know the pre season is over but that it was a situation where a lot of people kind of looked and said let me make you rise handle is is done and then you know but they will give Marcus the benefit of the doubt struggle starting about a week to and couldn't get back on track when they went to Ryan Tannehill it was obvious that what we've seen increasing numbers are average Terry McCormick Titans insider dot com he's a publisher is joining me on CBS sports radio so Terry signing Ryan Tannehill to that long term deal one thing that allowed the Titans to do is it enough to use the franchise tag on him so that made the franchise tag available for Derrick Henry we've seen the franchise tag with running backs before specifically levy on Bellamy got kind of ugly what's the sense on what's gonna happen with Derrick Henry in his franchise tag as we work towards hopefully work towards training camp yeah that's interesting I'm you know I think you know the franchise tag is a double edged sword because you know the player doesn't want it the team a lot of times when they use it they know that the player is not gonna be happy about it and I think you know if you're the Titans you know the running back position is one that obviously Derrick Henry had a fantastic year he said to really good years in that role the last two seasons for the Titans but I think when you look at what happened with Todd Gurley when you look at what's happened with divide Dave Freeman you look at what's happened with levy on sale you know all these guys who you know were up for big money and then once they got it David John another one to throw in there and all of a sudden the wheels come off for running back at the no the Titans are probably smart to try it this way with there can we know that that they may still negotiate up until July fifteenth and try to get a long term deal done if they can but to me I think this whole situation you know with the way running backs are going franchise Madonna's probably the smart thing to do not that there's a lot of times when a guy gets the franchise tag he holds out of the office of work he holds out of pre season you hold out of training camp it shows up a few days before the first game and then all of all one after soft tissue report hamstring pull quiet something like that and then he never really gets on track so I think that's what you got to guard against the Titans and worry about if Derrick Henry misses the offseason working doesn't get into football shape before you showed up is there can be the type of guy who gets sideways emotionally a little bit about having the franchise tag put on him I don't think he'd be very happy he's probably happy about his other half the long term security that said he he's the type of data he's a workout warrior he's he first type of guy I think he would do his best to answer the bell but you know it's also a business so you may get told by his representation to you know stay home for the offseason work don't put yourself in harm's way until the board's alive Terry McCormick Titans insider dot com joining me on the show Terry how did the trade of Jurrell Casey go over in Nashville not not well unless you want to unless they're going to go out and do something else with the yeah the ten million dollars worth of money that they say five nothing is contract only give back a seventh round pick up they opened a lot of people diss to Hey what's going on I think some people are speculating you're good to go one or two or three different ways either you know it gives them negotiating money with Henry if they want to do that use them a chance to maybe make a run to keep Logan Ryan if they want to do that or the people who have like been Digiday Bianconi and he has a history having played for Mike Vrabel's Houston so you know there are things that I guess could be done with that money if the tight so choose but losing a dialect or OKC who'd been following us out all the field it had been you know warrior type player during some not so good times for this franchise and they end up to lose him for a seventh round pick in and not only are you losing the player who's a talent usually a guy who's well respected in the locker room and well respected in the community so you know if if they're gonna use this money that they freed up by futuro Casey and it's going to be you know they're going to have to make a splash who did get somebody done get something done somebody under contract there was a time not all that long ago Terry were drilled case she was the only thing they had on that roster that was anything close to a Pro Bowl caliber player yeah he made the lady Walker now they're gone so that's the two guys this franchise gruesome gruesome times two three win seasons you know what it can with hot you know if it was a dark time for this franchise injury okay you're exactly right he would you know a bright spot in really bad team along with the lady.

"Be shown Pendergast show you can tweet me at Shanti Pendergast Shanti Pendergast here shown Pendergast last segment of the show if you want to get in eight five five two one two four CBS what we learned tonight I think we I think I have learned that more on this is more on the Twitter at Shanti Pendergast is where you can tweet me then the calls to the show I'm I generally think the callers tonight are of the opinion that the Astros have not shown enough remorse should have been punished more harshly people are not happy with the Astros the reason people are not happy with me I think in this is more a social media thing then the phone calls really none of the phone callers have come after me for my take the Cody Ballenger and you dharma shouldn't be the Dodgers that are out there complaining about it the Dodgers have a right to complain as do any team there it was on the wrong end of the Astros cheating any team that the Astros play this year where there were garbage can banks going on or even suspected garbage can banks which I guess would be everybody that they played this year released after a certain point in the season when they concocted this scheme would have a beef with the with the Astros you know people complaining about buzzers in twenty nineteen I I just think I I mean I don't think I'm looking at this through astral colored glasses I think the buzzer thing is is a crazy thing to me that that sounds that sounds so far out of bounds realism as to what players might do or the fact that nobody through this in in the exhaustive investigation that there was nothing on covered about that the players have cycle through that Astros clubhouse in the in the last three years because let's let's face it if you think they were doing that in twenty nineteen and you probably thought they were doing it in twenty eighteen to maybe the twenty seventeen then I just can't imagine something like that would go on and that there would be a Mike fires for the buzzer part of it is well that's just it doesn't it doesn't hold water to me so arm but the V. Dodger fans are not happy with me pointing out the Cody Ballenger hit one forty three in the World Series and I haven't I guess I did I guess IT point this out the U. Darvish had any already of over twenty one in the World Series and yet these are the main two Dodgers that we're hearing complain about baseball not doing something about the World Series Cody Ballenger saying that the Astros strolled will quote stole the World Series from us in twenty seventeen and you Darvish once the World Series vacated it just it rings all over just the bad look if you were a player that it was a main reason why the Dodgers lost that series in seven games we could be bell interview you don't get a throwing error early in game seven then maybe the Dodgers win if you don't receive a bunch of a bunch of runs in game seven to maybe the Dodgers when but stating is fact that the if it was stolen because of garbage can banging is the opportunistic to say the least but the Astros put themselves in this spot they did it by cheating they did it by apologizing for horribly for the most part and here's where we are they're gonna hear about it all year long they deserve to I do I agree with rob Manfred this is part of their punishment dealing with all these questions in fact I would say unless a player is dealing with an illness they should have to do these media sessions you can't back out of them we can't read tweets where's so and so opted not to do media today not if it was a day where they're supposed to do it that should be sort of an unwritten part of the punishment I think other areas with the Astros could see where I could see them getting punished this year two things I think the players have to areas where they can exact some sort of punishment on the Astros baseball couldn't I'm not talking about being guys but there are other areas of baseball that you get physical I'm just saying I'm I wouldn't necessarily want to be it would want to be Jose Altuve air Carlos Correa turning a double play against certain teams this year with certain guys barreling down the base paths I think that's an area where we could see that doesn't fit in under the being ball category but it does fit in under physicality where you can kind of push the margins a little bit I wouldn't wanna be Martine Maldonado blocking home plate let's put it that way and I think the other areas all star voting both fans employers fans choose the starters players in the commissioner's office choose the reserves and I can see they're not being necessarily a boycott well actually I could see fans wanting to boycott voting for the Astros I could I could see that being a movement for sure when the all star ballot comes out a hundred percent I could see that being a movement keep in mind the Astros have sent six players to each of the last three all star games and it hasn't always been the same sex but a lot of times it's been guys who were part of that George writers made all three years the last three years for example I'll Tuesday made it in seventeen and eighteen qureia was a starter in twenty seventeen in the all star game Bregman was a starter last year just in Berlin was the name again he's a pitcher he's not a hitter but he's part of that twenty seventeen team in the book the fans won't pick overlander that'll get picked by players and commissioner but my point is that that is another way to exact revenge on the Astros of your fan don't fall for them for the all star game some of the probably bonuses tied to that sort of thing there's definitely pride tied to it I can promise you that goes out to these we won the most voted for players of the last five or six years serving years where he's been the most voted for player in the American League how crazy would it be to see the first set of all star ballots come out and routinely the last couple years when you do it at almost every position there's an astro on the top three in the outfield last year three they're all three outfielders make that primary cut for voting you know the voting's done in two stages now all three of their outfielders made it to the second stage of voting Brantley Springer and Reddick how wild would it be to see Jose Altuve a seventh among second baseman Alex Bregman six among third base because people still some people still vote for actual fans will still vote for but I think that's gonna be a very very intriguing wrinkle with those when those numbers come out I let's go to the phones and as we head towards the top of the hour finishing up the show we go to Florida let's talk to Dan Dan you're up on CBS sports radio what's happening to our son actually listening to you on the phone through our six seventy in Chicago but I'm over to the the what I was going to make is I think baseball have an opportunity here to follow a model that already works and that is with the NC double a does when they give it to a drastic situation like this they could very imposed Emily's turn the team there where they can't go in the post season play for a couple three years they lose their scholarships for couple three years I mean that you know that is the equivalent of having a pro game would be not giving it the post season play and that giving them losing their draft choices for awhile when you were just bringing up keep the bell a keeper ballplayers off of the ball players that were involved and the teams that were involved in this Sir get them off the all star ballot don't even give him a chance the nap all about and and if you're really wanted to close the loop because all of this is aimed at management then get back to the imposing a fine on the players so you say you of all the final but and I'm just taken a number up here I don't know what it should be ten percent of the base salary and all the players on the team yes do you understand the P. Dan just damn real quick the general quick the problem with that is that the players were granted immunity and if what do you like it or not what do you like it or not they were granted immunity and Starr punishing them after granting them immunity V. union is going to go let's start I agree with you a hundred percent wouldn't work with the actors are but I'm saying that you put a program that like that in place going forward the ball players are going to want to be the ones that are going to the that are going to police this they're not going to take a chance the one with the twelve or fifteen pictures on the team let this go on when they get no benefit from it all it is is a downside so I just started yeah I just think that this model from the NC double a works I mean it's it's not that the NC double a doesn't have them have multiple instances where this is been used I mean you have a pen state situation you had I'm a Kentucky for and and really cringed when Kentucky lost their their basketball program scholarships and everything about thirty years ago but you got in your bed other things but it's it's I mean if you keep if you if you keep them out of postseason play your follow the cash yeah and the thing of it is is if you're going to if you're gonna get owners attention into all of this you have them in the pocketbook and that's where it really gets some attention something like this is more of a preventative program going forward than being able to fly a meter at Lee the whole thing so the actual situation yeah Dan let me the good good call the appreciate you checking in pursuit you listening from Florida on six seventy the score up in up in Chicago I wished I I've lived in Chicago for a few years I always think it's bad **** when somebody says Hey I'm listening the on six seventy mmhm we've got a couple minutes I want to react to what you just said that's actually something that in a conversation off there my producer Brian is up in New York suggested to me earlier before the showing of like boy that is a really really good idea that I had not heard somebody bring up I'm glad glad you brought it up before the end of the show and here's why that I think would make great sense if they had done it I don't know there it's done now the V. minister their punishment you know unless something like buzzers does become a reality which I don't think it's gonna happen but pretend for a second that it does to wear more punishment would be administered banning the Astros from the postseason here's why it would hurt the adverse well here's why could work as you're punishing the franchise not the players the players are all up in a punishment that the overall franchise is getting so it I think it might stand up legally I'm no legal expert but it would certainly stand a better legal even starting to administer finds on players after you granted them immunity that's one the reason why would really hurt the Astros ease their operating on in my opinion a very limited window in order to win a World Series I think their window is two years Max to win another World Series breaking in and out to very and your on Alvarez are gonna be here for the next four five years beyond that all of the guys that matter on this team right now or all either going to be free agents after this year free agency in two years maybe even retired by then who knows with burly entering Frankie but Berliner cranky have two years left on each of their deals there is no suitable replacement for either of those guys coming down the pipe in this organization right now as we speak unless forest Whitley just wakes his **** up and starts pitching like the first round pick that he was there is no solution that's not going to cost him crane an arm and a leg to go get to replace overlander grantee in two years assuming that you're replacing them in two years that they don't extend me who knows maybe the pitching well maybe extend even further Springer free agent after this year the Astros window I'll just put it this way since I got fifteen seconds left it's limited and if you took away one of those fears are both of them in a penalty that would hurt that would hurt I think my crew up in New York thank Gerry here all you guys are keeping me on the air all of you for listening Phoenix.

D. S. and the other six the base we conducted draft based on record where the upper tier teams get to pick which opponent they play from the lower tier teams in the wild card round of three best of three I what you guys think that I'm off base on my astro takes then from what I've learned this week you're gonna hate this I love that I love that proposal I am all for not just baseball basketball and football leading the higher seeds pick their opponents in each round I think I think it would be a huge reward for playing well in the regular season will make the regular season mean more because that would be a reward a big reward for forgetting an upper tier seats the NBA the tremendous that's the one sport where they would turn that into some television man the draft teams won through forward each conference get to draft from the pool of teams five to rate who they pick based on match ups all it would be awesome it would be awesome eight five five two one two four CBS to Vancouver Washington we go Tony you are up on CBS sports radio all that last caller is absolutely wrong okay there's a difference between a picture dipping inspectors AB stands as waiters and what's going to come you know our second bait our guide on second base bringing the character's level we've got a camera fixated on the catchers channel monitor in the dugout these guys give these guys a war the rascal they can hit a baseball okay and that they know what's coming in there a lot that's like putting a camera not bottle before the plane and putting a microphone in them and the linebackers ears that's a whole different style of cheating words from light and that does that ruins the game and that's and that's cheating at its highest point when when you're using cameras to relay signals it out to the your your players yeah you know what I'm saying yeah course it's terrible it's been it's bad cheating no doubt triggering out naturally Libby do every year day at the guys I mean this way has not come that's all that's different than just having a camera mounted on a on his hands at different thank you yeah does it all right appreciate phone call Tony yeah it's it's the that is why he chose to fire their manager fired their GM got a bunch of draft picks taken from him Jim kringle a parking ticket for five million Bucks more than anything else and I tend to agree with rob Manfred on this part of the punishment is for the Astros to just sit in their own bleep storm they've created for a few weeks that was a part to me there were so many things about the apology tour the apology fast last Thursday that were botched and embarrassing really embarrassing international fan Jim crane in that press conference was it was just terrible the apologies Bregman and all too they did were ridiculous I thought they were both put in a bad spot to have to do that I mean they should apologize I suppose but I think they were tried it out to do that when guys are in the clubhouse and half hour later just doing media scrums you know it's not some scripted thing and they sounded great Springer and qureia Berliner was all right like most of the guys you talk to the media who were with the team back then came across great your breaking in and out to have a out there looking like they were on a hostage propaganda video with a gun pointed at him from off camera speaking for like twenty or thirty seconds pregnant pausing after every three words got it was annoying it was bad eight five five two one two four CBS are Tyler Francisco you guys hold on you guys you other folks calling in gravel line we will take more of your phone calls are going to talk a little I. R. it's not how it's spelled all right eight five five two one two four CVS astro sign stealing at the forefront we will shift gears in the next segment for a few minutes we will get all of you on the phones I promise it'll be big phone right here on the show but we will talk to Benjamin Albright draft analyst based out of Denver I'm gonna get his thoughts on where some of these rookie quarterbacks fit into what's going to be a fascinating fascinating off season at the quarterback position in the NFL I'm so let's keep going here in the meantime and hit the phone is a five five two one two four CVS to Baltimore Maryland we go talk to Chris Chris you're up on CBS sports radio what's happened place your order I'm good how you doing Chris doing all right doing okay so I'm just saying this as a Baltimore Orioles fan I don't really care that they cheated because my team is not good enough to do it so I don't really care I mean you still have to put the bat on the ball and still have to put it why and still have to go over ninety defenders so I mean ultimately you know they they did what they had to do honestly like yeah give them a little advantage but I don't really care that they cheated they got a World Series that two years ago like what do you do it several with like we want from it and as far as your Cody Ballenger statement they do say they do do they do caught the show because the patient has a game called the shell however doesn't make it any less do she he's still at the Baltimore coming from Baltimore now looking forward to this season what so ever I would say we have a little bit of promise but that would be a lie so Chris yeah I know right yeah exactly no Baltimore is is one of the epicenter for pro football I'm just curious as an oral figures look I'm in Houston the Astros were in the same spot did you guys are in back in twenty thirteen a one fifty one and one eleven they were one of the worst teams in recent history what are people saying they're about the Orioles in terms of the window here like what's the what's the plan like what's the turn around time frame Sports Illustrated was doing an article about the Astros back then saying that Hey my twenty seventeen they're gonna win the World Series which turned out to be actually correct what what's the window there how do you guys feel about the rebuild a lot of the guys on the local radio stations are talking about you know in the next three to five years and you know I'm I'm I've been a Baltimore oriole stand for all thirty years of my life and I've been through a lot of ups and a lot more down so it's it would be wrong of me to be positive about it so I'm a little bit pessimistic all my view I still see it probably upwards of five to seven maybe eight years and hell for even the chicken tenders we just don't were small market we don't have a lot of money Angeles's fight with his money anyway you know it just it just doesn't look good I can't even name like other than Adlai rush rent and usually I'll do you have like anybody that I'm even looking forward to seeing why yeah so it's hard but I mean it could all change you never know like we could get a couple start that come out of nowhere and become household names like I I I'm begging for that like I'm I'm I'm yearning for yeah Chris I appreciate the phone call god speed to your brother football season will be here before you know it that's tricky to look the Astros had to rebuild from the dregs in twenty twelve and twenty thirteen but you're doing it in a division where it's the Texas Rangers in the Seattle mayor earners in the Oakland days and the angels who were a big market team but you can't get out of their own way your Baltimore you're doing in the same division with the Yankees the red Sox to the biggest payrolls in baseball in the rays who were one of the smartest organizations to do more with less than anybody in baseball cool that's a tough part brother it is a tough part you are rooting for the new baseball playoff format to get put into place you guys have seen that right where they're talking about expanding wild cards from two wild cards to four to the B. seven teams total in each league and the top record that team will get a bite of the LDS and the other six the base we conducted draft based on record where the upper tier teams get to pick which opponent they play from the lower tier teams in the wild card round of three best of three I what you guys think that I'm off base on my astro takes then from what I've learned this week you're gonna hate this I love that I love that proposal I am all for not just baseball basketball and football leading the higher seeds pick their opponents in each round I think I think it would be a huge reward for playing well in the regular season will make the regular season mean more because that would be a reward of big reward for for getting an upper tier seats the NBA the tremendous that's the one sport where they would turn that into some television man the draft teams one through forty each conference get to draft from the pool of teams five to rate who they pick based on match ups all it would be awesome it would be awesome eight five five two one two four CBS to Vancouver Washington we go Tony you are up on CBS sports radio all that last caller is absolutely wrong okay there's a difference between a pitcher dipping is better okay we stand this way doesn't want to come you know our second bait our guide on second base bringing the character's level we've got a camera fixated on the catchers panel monitor in the dugout these guys give these guys a war the rascal they can hit a baseball okay in that they know what's coming in there a lot that's like putting a camera not bottle before the plane and putting a microphone in them and the linebackers ears that's a whole different style of cheating their unsportsmanlike and that doesn't that ruins the game and that's and that's cheating at its highest point when when you're using cameras to relay signals the flagship of Chinese and a and B. R. F. at San Francisco more recently.

"You're listening to be shown Prendergast show you can tweet me at Shanti Pendergast Shanti Pendergast tears shone Pendergast all right so while we were away the Kansas City Chiefs got on the board again and it's twenty seventeen now the forty Niners leading the chiefs and we're we're gonna have a fantastic finish here in the Superbowl it would look like it would appear as I mentioned when St when a Kansas city got the ball back with about nine minutes to go if they can get a score of either variety but best case for them would have been a touchdown which they got and in some ways the way things unfolded they almost read proof this thing and here's what I mean as I mentioned earlier I would be concerned about what she's been in any read was gonna take his time going to get a touchdown and unnecessarily go on a very long drive it turned out the drive was under three minutes long they took over the football with under nine minutes to go in the game in regulation and their six minutes and thirteen seconds left as they kick off the chiefs and the play that if the chiefs come back and win this game the play that they will circle the play they'll be talking about in Kansas city for a long long time is the third in fifteen play there was the result of what looks like it looks like a chiefs first down on second fifteen and while we were in Brady could be the the forty Niners challenge the plane it was reversed called an incomplete pass this I re kill soul on third and fifteen my homes again under pressure and he's been under pressure all day long there have been forty Niners in the pocket all all evening he heaves the ball down field to a wide open Tyree kill for forty four yards couple plays later there's a pass interference in the ends on a Travis Kelsey and then the net very next play a one yard touchdown pass from homes to Kelsey and the extra point tacked on brings the cheese to within a field goal so here we are there's about six minutes to go in the game in regulation and will now be up to Jimmy Garoppolo in the San Francisco forty Niners to put something together to the best case for them solve the game away look at there's a running attack they can possess the football enough down the stretch in this game to grind some clock it would be the San Francisco forty Niners but they need to strength some first downs together here in order to to possess the football hold on to the football and then we'll see what happens the best way to keep the chiefs from time this game is to keep Patrick moments on the sideline in this game eight five five two one two four CBS would circle that one thirteen fifteen Patrick my homes under pressure he's a ball down the field just they're just very horrific coverage bust by the San Francisco forty Niners to let Tyree kill just wide open I mean he it was practically a fair catch for for Thai retail and now we'll see how these last five minutes of the game play out eight five five two one two four two two seven if you want to get in my rooting interest in this game is in the San Francisco forty Niners in large part because I Balamand to win this game the part of my routing ammo sometimes and I don't know how you guys feel about this but when I root for a team which I do here in Houston that I don't see going to the Superbowl anytime soon has never been to a Superbowl hello never been to a conference title game then for me the routing interest becomes okay do I need a new fan base experiencing Superbowl success when when my team is experience very little Superbowl success and while neither of these teams have won a Superbowl in a long time the forty Niners at least have a pedigree that includes a bunch of super bowls in other words I can deal with forty niner fans celebrating a Superbowl because they've done that many times before the chiefs I don't know man which I know the cheese one Superbowl for back in the day but I don't know if I can exist in an AFC where there's now all the sudden another great team as the chiefs are able to get off the field defensively now here we go good on good it'll be the San Francisco defense one of the best in the league going against Patrick my homes maybe the best player in all football in the last five minutes of the Superbowl silly Superbowl that is not produced a ton of maybe super memorable moments so far in this game is at least setting up for what should be a tremendous finish eight five five two one two for CBS if you want to get in Kansas city get the ball their own thirty five yard line so there there what thirty yards away from their midfield now okay so they're driving as you can tell I'm a little bit behind I'm streaming they they the internet is is not perfect from this standpoint I'm the internet when you stream your way behind you're still way behind terrestrial television as somebody who works in a terrestrial medium radio that is the thing the terrestrial ness and cable television still has on the internet is that I'm operating to place behind here so the chiefs apparently according to my crew up in New York moving the football at the outset here of of their drive what could be potentially game winning drive Patrick homes could have his first moment here as a Superbowl quarterback and just as I was saying earlier the fourth quarter man you may have this double digit lead EMI painted yourself into a corner if the chiefs are able to come back and win this game in the forty Niners will will without even on these plays warm homes is getting the ball off there's guys they're practically sacking him now he's down to the six yard line I'm told by my crew up there how did it happen guys going jump on just give me a little heads up so I'm not I know to pass by to the receiver what gives Watkins again maybe there's your MVP Watkins gotta get pretty close to a hundred yards receiving in this game so the chief Sir now in in range to possibly up possibly take the lead in this way will this be a classic case of all they scored with too much time on the clock I don't know I igara was done some decent things in this game so far but this he have a touchdown drive in in in the last five minutes of this game you know Kyle Shanahan's offense is at its best when you're working with the lead you're trying to grind clock you're the one sort of dictating the tempo you know scholarship hands offense built to I'm bill to to our to come from behind yeah boy that what an absolute dime from homes to walk in sound about the ten yard line so I know you guys are saying the six yard line is down about the ten it would appear that the for now now they're the four okay we'll see this in the future like you know what Sean stopping so stopping so touchy with your crew and they're down to the four yard line now so there you go they've got a second goal on the four yard catch you quick question John sure ma'am if you get down to the two yeah in its fourth in two yeah do you go for the touchdown or do you kick the field goal thank you Andy Reid would kick a field goal there boy you're really tempted to go fright though right there you know because it here's the thing I and I don't know how much time would be would be left at that point you know we're that we're I'm sure we're operating now with under with about three minutes ago three and a half minutes ago something like that you would if you're Kansas city you be leaving it up to your defense to get off the field San Francisco would be left with horrible field position and my guess is they probably played super conservative down there and you're looking at another opportunity to get the ball back Williams into the end zone I yes touchdown the Kansas City Chiefs take a lead twenty three twenty these come back kids from Kansas city you guys are getting a little too excited knowing that the host you're producing for has money on the San Francisco forty nine do you guys have money on the chiefs will botch the was getting set is not mission okay all right all right I just I can't tell who's who up there sometimes you know what I mean like it's yeah but to us of the Kansas City Chiefs Piccoli twenty three twenty two they tack on the extra point because this is kind of a big extra point that they're kicking here you got that right yeah so it sounds like they haven't picked it yet but a touchdown Damian Williams and me are the chiefs are two minutes and change away from winning their first Super Bowl in fifty years well it is pretty cool I look I as I said at the outset of this segment I am definitely not one of those guys where I'm I'm not one of those guys like you know who I feel great for is the Kansas City Chiefs fans like I'm more one of those guys like screw everybody else's fans and so my team win the Superbowl I will say this it is a pretty cool scene when they cut to Kansas city and they show the whatever plaza it is that they're on out there were all the cheese fans I mean it this will be if they hold on to this win this will be one of those things where if you if you got anybody you do business with in Kansas city they're looking are they looking at this thing again okay yeah because it looks like a foot when out of bounds all right so this this could get interesting as of right now it's a touch on the call on the field is touch down in the question is when his foot touches the line me describe what's going on here for the five of you that are watching the Superbowl is that when me I think it's gonna be a touchdown it's gonna stand when when Damian Williams he's running to the right towards the pylon in his foot looks to touch the sideline and I believe the way that rule works is wherever you're from wherever the ball is when your foot touches a sideline that's where the ball spot in the balls clearly over the goal line when his foot touches a sideline unless I'm misinterpreting the rule mis remembering it then in this this looks to be a touchdown but the play is under review as of right now I don't know maybe not maybe the.

down there and you're looking at another opportunity to get the ball back Williams into the end zone I yes touchdown the Kansas City Chiefs take a lead twenty three twenty these come back kids from Kansas city you guys are getting a little too excited knowing that the host you're producing for has money on the San Francisco forty nine do you guys have money on the chiefs will botch the was getting set is not mission okay I just I can't tell who's who up there sometimes you know what I mean like it's yeah but to us of the Kansas City Chiefs take a lead twenty three twenty two they tack on the extra point because this is kind of a big extra point that they're kicking here you got that right yeah so it sounds like they haven't picked it yet but a touchdown Damian Williams and me are the chiefs are two minutes in change away from winning their first Super Bowl in fifty years well it is pretty cool I look at it as I said at the outset of this segment I am definitely not one of those guys where I'm not one of those guys like you know who I feel great for is the Kansas City Chiefs fans like I'm more one of those guys like screw everybody else's fans and so my team wins the Superbowl I will say this it is a pretty cool scene when they cut to Kansas city and they show the whatever plaza it is that they're on out there were all the cheese fans I mean it this will be if they hold on to this win this will be one of those things where if you if you got anybody you do business with in Kansas city they're looking are they looking at this thing again okay yeah because it looks like a foot when out of bounds all right so this this could get interesting as of right now it's a touch on the call on the field is touch down in the question is when his foot touches the line let me describe what's going on here for the five of you that aren't watching the Superbowl is that when me I think it's gonna be a touchdown it's gonna stand when when Damian Williams he's running to the right towards the pylon in his foot looks to touch the sideline and I believe the way that rule works is wherever you're from wherever the ball is when your foot touches a sideline that's where the ball spot in the balls clearly over the goal line when his foot touches a sideline unless I'm misinterpreting the rule mis remembering it then arm in this this looks to be a touchdown but the play is under review as of right now I don't know maybe not maybe the ball is in over the he's in okay okay call it's up held a call to touch down okay okay good so should a trusted my gut instinct so the the call's touchdown the chiefs of a twenty three soon to be twenty four twenty lead and and then ounce last two minutes of this Jimmy Garoppolo you sat you watch Tom Brady for three and a half years this is where you get your Brady moments on and in the San Francisco this thing is just creek boy this thing you know as I've mentioned gambling throughout this and I haven't done a lot of gambling updates because it's been such a low scoring game twenty four twenty extra point is good and there hasn't been a ton to update from a gambling standpoint but I'll say this about this game is that this get your pretty close to the total if San Francisco drives down in scores the total close in about fifty to fifty two and a half so you're probably still safe unless the Francisco were score really quickly.

"Show on Pendergast till you can tweet me patch Shanti Pendergast Shanti Pendergast tears shone Pendergast good to be with all of you on a Superbowl Sunday as they get ready to kick off sometime around the bottom of the hour shortly thereafter down in Miami national anthem coming up millions watching the US national anthem for sure I'm gonna go over on that tomorrow I got a two minutes and one second boy listening to fasten the previous segments the fabric invoice it sure sounds like getting get great value but I took the over on the anthem I'm open to demi lavado wants to wants to you know just the maximize every second that she's out there on the field so I'm going over two minutes and one second here quickly my profits and I'm on for the Superbowl and then I we've we've actually got a phone call or two that I want to drop in before the before we get to the bottom of the hour in this segment I have over nineteen and a half completions Jimmy Garoppolo I feel like the I feel like Kansas city's gonna be selling out to stop the run I feel like all of grapplers numbers are a little bit deflated in the wagering community because of how the NFC title game played out I have most third over eighteen and a half yards on his Long Island that running scheme is set up to break big long runs in Kansas city is going to be I think they're gonna be up near the line of scrimmage to try to stop the run I think that means Moster it's gonna break at least one or more past that second level of defender I've depot Samuel over fifty four half yards receiving I think he's going to get a couple big plays down feel of a play action I've Mikel Hartman over twenty one and a half yards receiving because it's basically one play for him total number of players attempting a pass over two and a half so basically both starting cornerbacks and somebody else whether it's a gimmick play or a backup long field goal under forty seven and a half yards these are two teams are gonna think wanna go for it on fourth down quite a bit I mention the anthem I'd any re being the first head coach shown during the anthem a plus one ten and then of course the bet that we'll all be watching at halftime you J. lo or secure a show side boob I have yes plus one forty these are the wagers this is the information this is the type of material that you come to the show on Pendergast show for there you go so I think it's one two that's one nine or ten bats right there so we'll track those throughout the night that's we do here on the Superbowl gamble cast here on CBS sports radio try to drop as many of you it many users of you as we can in here before the bottoming out because when I come in chat during the game too I'm cool with that as well I'm just a dude sitting here watching the game let's go to let's go to South Carolina talk to Paul Paul you are up what's happening my man Sean are you dog I'm great how are you good good I I have a crazy way a baton XO so you and I never can figure out who to bat for basically as you the opening point told us it doesn't matter who gets it right so long it the only thing that matters is whoever differs it doesn't matter if you go for the ball is what matters is is when a referee asks which is the one that the fat and you never can tell because the camera like right there on ground mobile so I bet on the team on the left on the opening kick off as you look at your it doesn't matter if the team is on the line this ticket also receiving and I just spent on that team to win and in the past twenty nine years if one knew about seventy five percent tax kidding it's it's crazy to me man that's crazy so I tried to make a bet in Vegas on that and they said they wouldn't do it I always have to just deal and so anybody out there listening can't figure out you know who did that for a wide a ban on it Israeli fifty fifty so I just think the team on the left on the opening kickoff there you go there you do do you do you have any feel for the game aside from what what circumstances going to hand you in about five or ten minutes I will I give the city just as it's been a long long time for them and I just think can be read as a little edge over Shanahan coach I appreciate the phone call enjoy the game ma'am thank you thanks for sharing it eight five five two one two four CBS if you want to get in here before the before the bottom of the hour it's very liberating way to bet on the game you know you don't have to trust any of your analysis you don't have to worry about what your gut feeling was on Tuesday and now it's this on Friday and then you're back to where you were again on Sunday you just say you know what I'm gonna go with the T. mobile the last and and that team win seventy five percent of the time so were I'm we are we're we're getting to all close the national anthem time here so I'll be sure to I'll be sure to be timing that is demi Lovato gets set hi this is a fun game and there's a lot of legacies involved here probably of a for listing the people who the Superbowl is most important to you individually I think obviously both quarterbacks you know we're talking about legacies are potentially affected by this Superbowl I think both quarterbacks because inherently when your quarterback you're measured first and foremost by the number championships you went when you're a good to great quarterback you know that that's what determines your spot in the room is is number super bowls and these are both quarterbacks who are going to be in you know some generational conversations in all likelihood so Ashley Patrick my homes who's wanted in the P. already so the two quarterbacks for sure Andy Reid by any readers probably a Superbowl win away from being able to punch his ticket to canton I think he's a hall of fame coach already when you look at just the sheer number of wins the sheer number of trips to the post season just the overall success but I I think any read gets a Superbowl win tonight and then his his hall of fame resume is pretty well complete I think of the other players in this game there this this has an impact on players I think Richard Sherman you know Sherman Sherman's a guy who's probably in the hall of fame conversation you know the Achilles injury the last couple years probably heard it but there's a time for Sherman where he was he was the best cornerback in football for about two or three years and he's he's not back at the complete peak level that he was when he was in Seattle but he still pretty damn good he still Pro Bowl player Richard Sherman's able to be a significant part of a great defense for two Super Bowl championship teams that would seem to cement his presentation in canton on hall of fame weekend I think an interesting one too is tiring Matthew of the chiefs enterprise in turn Matthew legacy for terra Matthew hear me out on this look I I watch tower Matthew player in Houston last year he was a good player wasn't a great player he's back to the level that he was in our in Arizona now with Kansas city the way that's the spec nolo's letting him kind of be that robber back there he's back to being a first team all pro this means it twice now Tara Matthews been a first team all pro he's only twenty seven years old he feels like an older player because he's been around awhile but he's only twenty seven years old it's tiring Matthew stays at this level for another three four years and that sure looks like an under for demi lavado in the national anthem if he stays at this level he's a Pro Bowl all pro level and we're talking about tiring Matthew three four years now is a four five time first team all pro and he's doing that for a team that's won a Superbowl or two Tara Matthews gonna be a hall of fame conversation so I think those are the players and coaches I think the only other one I can think of where you go boy legacy conversation I think Jed York with the forty Niners and and hear me out on this one look the forty Niners were team that when Eddie DeBartolo was running things was thought to be one of the best most well run NFL franchises in the history of the league he was a great honor he's an all fame for a reason Jed York who's your two generations removed from Eddie DeBartolo he's off that DeBartolo tree Denise DeBartolo his mom Eddie DeBartolo his grandfather the if you think about the Niners on Jed York's watch yeah we got to Superbowl a few years ago with calling Capranica quarterback but did a period of time where Jed York was a was a punch line where they were hiring Jim Tomsula to be their head coach and chip Kelly for a year it's crazy to think the same person or higher to hire Jim Tomsula to be the head coach of the forty Niners also hired Kyle Shanahan but this would be a chance for Jed York to on his watch as the person running things the way Eddie DeBartolo ran things back in the eighties and nineties to get a Super Bowl on his watch would be would be something that would be legacy changing for him all right so just a few minutes away from kick off in Miami it is our Superbowl gamble cast here on CBS sports radio as we track things throughout the as we track the the the betting throughout the night here and and is still basically show the guy watching the watching me watching the Superbowl it looks like demi Lovato's national anthem was about a minute fifty so it comes in way way under and she's getting good reviews too she didn't I don't think she missed any words there was a prop that for that is she gonna leave out a word I think was like nine to one so I think she did well I think Shia yeah there is a minute forty nine point nine three so went way under way under so I'm all in one so far my prop bets let's hope I know football better than I know singing all right we're at the bottom of the hour on the Superbowl Sunday it's time for our our last update pre Super Bowl the rest of the updates throughout the night we'll keep you updated on the Superbowl here said Kantor.

"Tweet me at Shanti Pendergast at Shanti Pendergast tears shone Pendergast you can tweet me at Shanti Pendergast somebody get back to the phones here in just a second some of the visuals of the scene around staples center our arches to the really hit home they're very poignant the Grammys are going on tonight the same night and there at the staples center on the same night as when earlier in the day maybe the most revered Laker of all time which is saying something on a team that Magic Johnson Kareem Abdul Jabbar Shaquille o'neal lebron James now have all played for Jerry west will chamberlain long list of transcendence stars that have played for the Lakers Kobe may be the most maybe more than magic I'm and that he passed away in a in a helicopter crash earlier today he is daughter several others on a helicopter on it on their way to his academy to the mom academy for basketball practice in the helicopter crashed in the hills of Calabasas which is a an affluent suburb of downtown Los Angeles and the scene of people filing in for the Grammys in people there to pay respects to Kobe Bryant I did mention if you're a Laker fan and you've been a Kobe Bryant fan from the time you set foot on the floor that this is a it's it's almost a confusing time right like we can all agree that this is still surreal the there's a big part of me that it doesn't feel like Kobe Bryant is gone because this news is just so crazy is forty one died in a helicopter crash earlier in the middle of the day on a Sunday and so it's still it's one of those things it's not gonna sink in for a little while and I would imagine if you were a public a Die Hard fan of Kobe where you you're sporting well being your emotional well being sports wise rested on so many nights with Kobe Bryant playing basketball vet you almost feel like I just need to go to the staples center and just be there just to pay respects right I mean there's no it happened today there's no funeral there's no wake right now you know that time will come but there's no way to go if you're a fan and you just need to get in your car and you just try to staples center because that's where that's where you watched him do all the work that you love so much I'm in Mirer of Kobe Bryant more than I am a fan of Kobe Bryant as I said a few times on the show tonight I grew up reading I grew up in and throughout my adult life rooting against Kobe Bryant because I wasn't a Laker fan of course I would read against Kobe Bryant I knew the guy was amazing and I respected him as a basketball player to someone who is who maybe gave more effort than any professional athlete that I've ever watched just in terms of the guys insatiable desire to be the best but I didn't root for the guy and later on in his career now his retirement years I really did come to root for the guy in whatever it was he was gonna do after basketball because whatever he was gonna do after basketball stuff that we can all root for right weather is movies or whether it was philanthropic endeavors whether it was you know some sort of broadcasting endeavor or some the things he did for ESPN in helping break down chalk talks things like that if he got into broadcasting whatever those are things were generally speaking you don't ever rooting interest you just enjoy the people's work and now Kobe Bryant's gone age of forty one tweet here from a friend of mine name a Wallace marsh here in Houston he's a a rocket season ticket holder with really good seats and he said the season tickets for fourteen years these are seats at our center court about four rows back at the Toyota center and he said Kobe was the best I've ever seen he was a very physical player and at the most beautiful shot every game he played in Houston was a playoff atmosphere that is true Toby brought the rockets with a man when he came on the road you know it's just a you you knew it was just a little different night me arena when Kobe Bryant was in town he was one of those guys I eight five five two one two four CBS if you want to get a lot of you wanting to get in on this so let's let's get things started this segment up in Minnesota and let's talk to James James your up on CBS sports radio thank god Hopi yeah right on the verge of winning three championships yeah we are going to prayer list because she is so hot what what leaves away from kids he had aspen about Kobe was used in the movie how do strong thunderstorm to replace the home this way with you this works returns it's not I'm sure she was one week later I do not use any fault which broadcast wants to this is not right to do that once it will more secure pardon Kobe was to talk to us the entire basketball we encourage you to play together a lot longer than they did we could work out their issues into prisons what it will this change to a lot more championships with the Los Angeles Lakers which team from Minneapolis I'm glad we got the lead in the call of god rest in peace dear Kobe Bryant James version of the phone call man JT emotion appreciate the phone call in the I thought I think there's probably people listening all over the country that that say man James a Minnesota speaking for me right now lot of tears lot of tears him people say we cry for yeah you don't know the guy usually is a basketball player Hey man the people mourn in their own ways and Kobe Bryant middle lots me meant a lot to a lot of people this just in sports as an escape for a lot of people right he you know there there's the there there's a lot of misery in the world and sports should provide an escape for that sort of thing tonight it's not because Kobe Bryant passed away but during Kobe Bryant's time on earth and certainly during his time on earth is a basketball player Ryan provided an escape for a lot of people in when you were going through bad times whoever's providing that escape for you whether it's an athlete or musician or maybe a friend in your life whatever the case may be those people become associated in your life you associate them with good feelings guys like James who just called in your brother FAQ Lakers have ties all the way back to Minnesota where he lives Kobe Bryant provided an escape for a lot of people and he did it more nights than most when you're great by definition you're doing that more nights than most Kobe providing an example for a lot of people ask athletes in other sports go watch some of the videos of some of the football players at the Pro Bowl talking about Kobe Bryant and you'll see eight five five two one two four CBS let's go to Milwaukee and Eric Eric you're up on CBS sports radio go for it I I'm okay yeah they just bring it out especially I am about will be will be lost you know I just wanted to get us to forget about those seven other families who in the days to come once you might feel left out because everybody is very very closely and so I'm as with them too because they lost vitamin B. chairs we pride that the greatest opiates well so I just want to get involved with that today on but Colby you know I'm forty eight and forty eight yesterday and the day will small a bittersweet day after my birthday and they see that somebody that I watched or not in the least what was the number one the scandal and bounce back you know I was so proud of him I'm going to gather his wife played by sight and over the years he got so much success in the NBA within the second as hard working on a book about Kobe not so the diet no people we know that and even that like the soundtrack of our life if somebody will make a movie about my life you would see me watching a Laker game it will be brought you so much joy because you know he brought it every day down the court if you want to give you know half of what well said the court Beatrice office we will recommend this up the mamba updated your goal maybe it was perfectly within its facts and everything and he got on the court and I think we're all black they had watched him play and when you were down action bad days that would be very family like whatever we turn on a like a damn all watch Colby he was he was something to be all we had this argument in the barber said with better ball yeah it will be a cold you apple I think we would just be a great all around so we will be truly missed man I'm so bad today that the man could not be here always locally with one day was also you know I'm forty two I think I've still got a long walk through the door of the gate within a and try to make them out one more time but no no don't have data base for many never want to get the exact yeah no doubt good caller appreciate the phone call I appreciate you mentioning that at the outset to the other families involved in this there there were there were reportedly nine people on the helicopter originally the reports it first earlier today were five people dead now I'm she reports of nine people in the helicopter I will say this not a great day for news reporting there was a report at one point that all of Kobe's daughters were on the helicopter the war it was just Jana there was a report that Rick report did Rick fox was on the helicopter he wasn't confirmed is that was confirmed by a few people shortly thereafter it was it is just not a great day for reporting on this thing in in in general you know the TMZ was the one is at the most accurate quite honestly they were the first ones I saw report the helicopter crash and then they were the first that I saw reported to the G. on his thirteen year old daughter was was on that helicopter with them accurately but yeah I got to remember the other remember the other family Hey look man told me was a guy who brought great happiness to a lot of people that's that's why that's why people mourn today you know there there's there a lot of people who Kobe Bryant they tie a lot of the great memories that they've had as a sports fan and maybe by proxy a lot of great memories they've had as a person you know for for a lot of us I I you know I I don't speak for everybody but when I think of my best memories in my life is there there are though they're the check mark once I mean I've got three kids so I obviously I take great joy in not only them you know joining us on this earth but some of the things they've accomplished but the short list of things where I felt at my happiest and I'm guessing if you're.

"Me at Shanti Pendergast at Shanti Pendergast here shown Pendergast and as we speak most skirt goes in ring he Moster discordant other touchdown tomorrow's give me one of those days I'm in over my show at six AM I do a morning show here in Houston I'm gonna be like rain Moster discord other touchdown corny joke I know but I think I may use that tomorrow morning he is destroying the Packers right now the the forty Niners about to go up thirty forty seven on the Packers so we can turn our eyes the Kansas city and they can turn their eyes to this game and know it'll probably be the San Francisco forty Niners that they're playing let's head out to Kansas city right now talk to the cheese beat writer for the Kansas city star blur Kirk off joining me right now CBS sports radio player welcome in procedure making some time what's it like in Kansas city tonight well I'm looking at the field at arrowhead and they have not lifted a finger to get the confetti off so still they're still reveling in in in this triumphant and why why wouldn't they be it's the first Superbowl win fifty years for this organization and and it's pretty cool saying this is a town with a real loyal chiefs fan base that has been kinda kicked in the gut many years with the types of playoff losses that they've been to ward and tonight they are celebrating like like yeah like they won a championship yeah and then they get yeah well in it no doubt in and that's what I that's why I wanted to go with this player off the top is that there are franchises that have been made a Superbowl in fifty years but a lot of those franchises don't make it because they're just bad franchises they're bad most seasons the chiefs are not that big chiefs have been largely a pretty good franchise for most of that time especially recently in the last few years Seoul along those lines how much does this mean to the city knowing that as you alluded to they've been so close so many times to finally get over the hump well you're right I mean that that's a good observation that you'll choose to bend to you know exactly zero super bowls fifty years same as the brown seems to lie in same as the jets same as the you know just a couple others yeah but the chiefs are better you know they they just have had a better you know overall record better regular season success in those years more division titles that sort of thing better players and they just have not been able to to get it done in in the in the playoffs they and it's not just losing in the playoffs sometimes they lose the most excruciating ways and and then and then patch will homes comes along and changes the dynamic of the franchise the organization the mood of the city and he just wasn't a little loose today so this is very this is a town that could not be I could not be any happier now it is a it is a palace on fire blue golf Kansas city star covers the chiefs joining me on CBS sports radio let's stick with my homes for a second Blair where is he he's only been doing this two years I know he's been with the team three years but only started two years in Kansas city Kansas city's got some pretty iconic figures in its history both baseball and football weird as my home stack up right now yeah yeah well they're voting they're they're starting to you know the stitches already for the mount Rushmore in city sports especially the Super Bowl in in a couple weeks but he looked at the guy is the guy just been incredible and the two years as a starter two years okay at C. championship game now trophy in this game and and he was just spectacular today with three touchdown passes and is twenty seven yard touchdown run that yeah it was one of the just one of those games where I came in thinking he he's not going to lose he's he's not going to be the losing pitcher in this game to Ryan Tannehill S. nothing gets right in the who's had a phenomenal phenomenal post season and it has earned the right to that to be the Titans quarterback going forward but in in this you know and in the stadium on this day even that she's were down ten zip in seventeen seven I just I just didn't get a sense of my home's gonna lose this game blur Kirk off joining me on CBS sports radio who is the gold standard in Kansas city by the way Blair is it George Brett I'm in Houston I'm in Houston so Hakeem Olajuwon into everybody's chasing in Houston across all the sports is it George Brett in Kansas city yeah I would say that that we wished we we talked about that a lot it's it's it's it's a a some kind of can't see not watch more I think you'd have Brett would be on there when Dawson the the Super Bowl winning quarterback to us a long time in the ASL Tom Watson the golfer is akin to sitting in and lifelong Kansas city and you know bait majors and in it and the person I would always I would tend to put up there is buckle Neil the old the Negro leagues the iconic figure and but that they would catch a group homes let's see is he's moving up the charts pretty fast in this town and in in in who could who could deny him with with what he's accomplished how much do you think his maturity his composure his poise has to do with the fact that he's a second generation athlete yeah that that's that's important and he's talked about that in and is expressed at the when he was a when he was a kid you know is going into the a major league baseball club houses and you know in in hanging around the kids of other major league players and seeing you know Alex Rodriguez and and you know in in in in major league stars and not being there not being intimidated by the that idea I I think you know the and that makes sense to me I I get that but I guess what surprised me a little bit is why did he have more success in combat your why did this team a Texas tech was I think thirteen and sixteen with him as a starter while he was there under cliff Kingsbury and in low they had to you know they they played you you know how big twelve football is uses so what that minded with very little defense you know he he he with his his team to score in the forties and fifties lose game wasn't his fault he could never lead to victory so that not gold with victories but but he he he has got it done as a pro that the chief saw something in him during the draft where you know that wouldn't do we know now the three quarterbacks taken the first recorded Baxter whiskey and my Holmes and John Watson and the chiefs interview them all like them all but but they saw something in my home so that that that prompted them to move up from twenty seven to ten in the draft that year and he is he's farther along with the other two right now where we had tiring Matthew here in Houston for your last year so we know that that affect you can have on a locker room can you put into words what he's meant to that team in that defense this year I gotta tell you that so but just to finish writing about that did it you know as much as this is city is celebrating this offense and cut my home than Tyree kill and Travis Kelsey and Sammy Watkins and store after store on the opposite side mine too cheap to win this game a year ago and lost in doing the patriots in a shoot out in two days after the after the game but she's fired their defensive coordinator so they basically blew out their defenses staff for new assistance defensive coordinator and Steve spec no low they got rid of old stalwarts like Justin Houston and Eric very anti for origin in and brought in to read Matthew Frank Clark Alex local for been several others the a real new identity on on the defensive side of the ball in that changed everything for this team it was a slow start they they won't get the job done the first half of the season but it took him that long to get their act together in today the help limit Derek can reach to sixty nine yards rushing when this guy he's just dominated dominated everybody he's played in the second half of the season so is entering that you just a really big part of this big parties such such cerebral player and in a great great locker room influence yeah I spent some time with him after the game he is the guy's going to want to spend the cover and he is an indigo on players all look up to him golf Kansas city star joining me on CBS sports radio I'm gonna take a devil's advocate point of you for just a second Blair there the the patriots unexpectedly lose to the dolphins in week seventeen so now the cheese all the sudden have a bye you guys are probably expecting to cover a game that first week of the playoffs on week seventeen when that when the day started and then they get the Texans in it at home and then they get the sixteen at home in the AFC title game is there any concern that maybe those two teams have not tested the chiefs enough yet for what in all likelihood is gonna be the San Francisco forty Niners come Superbowl time your point and it's part of the narrative here that you're you're absolutely right there on the final day of the regular season she first you know going in thinking they'll be the number three seed they would host the six on the at the pike at the time the Titans they figure they keep the Titans in the first first round of the playoffs and in the office pull off one of the biggest upsets in tennis history and all the sudden the patriots and she slipped positions in the you know it's it's crazy so that she still stored until week to the divisional round and it all behind as you know twenty four to nothing to the Texans and that game is gonna you know there there's no way you lose a twenty four nothing it managing that game I don't care how good my homes and in the offense is but somehow the Texans found a way to lose it that they they lost it before halftime twenty four to nothing well in the second quarter of two short twenty twenty four to break so crazy bounces go their way in in in in bad decisions I thought by bill o'brien in that game so but she's made some luck in in that game and then and then they get your Tennessee clearing up the patriots and the Baltimore Ravens in in the in the playoffs and the chief all they have to do is be the nine and seven sixty to get to the Superbowl now I would have been surprised I did one this game and and they were they were like the five Steelers of the twenty ten Packers to succeed the cot and won the Superbowl I thought the Titans been playing now well but I I don't know good things been dropped following the cheats way now for several weeks and in today's just more evidence of that Blair Kirk off Kansas city star joining me on the show last one before I let you go Blair what's what's the biggest concern I think we know what the match up is going to be now the Niners are leading thirty four seven with one quarter left to talk about that match up a little bit what about the forty Niners concerns you the most as somebody who who is covering the chiefs yeah great deep at the front so I don't know if the if the chiefs will will be able to you know cal on scoring the way that they get you know fifty one and thirty thirty five here in two playoff games I I I'm I'm not sure we're gonna see a total like that by the chiefs in in in the Superbowl so once again we can circle back to what we talked about earlier I think she's defense is going to have to come up big against Jimmy rob Lowe in the in the forty Niners came to Kansas city year ago in grappler got hurt in that game suffered a season ending in the ending injury Hey there ahead so we didn't get to see the head with the full flavor of the forty Niners were a year ago when they called off for twelve finish well they're the re I think that the real deal that defense is terrific and and and then I will what a what a great match up you've got you know that's fantastic offense against the great defense and it looks like services offices do a pretty good job tonight too no doubt blur Kershaw Kansas city star Blair congrats we appreciate it thank you talk to you I used to thanks for joining me all right we got it we got a minute or so left I know there's a call we have an old Stevens in South Carolina wants to drop in here real quick as we head toward stop we are Stephen you got about a minute fire away all right great first farm very a very happy to Travis is combat the Clinton or not for his senior year higher by on Facebook which is by all the Clinton tiger fan we're very happy coming back because I can assure you that you know he'll definitely be a first running back off the board next year here in mid to late first round and one more thing I want to say there's no cost there's no there's no there's nothing there's nothing bad about earning a degree because you can't play football forever mean yeah I've been something happen to Travis Lee have a degree to fall back on and you know nobody is Iron Man like study getting is Eurovision was when he played in just fifteen thank you so you know I'm happy for Travis congradulations so I'll go a hang up thank you very precede precede Steve receded now look these guys they go back to school may the V. counterpoint to that and I'm someone who's in Travis Etienne's corner on the decision that he made the counterpoint to that is he he can always go back and get his degree right and maybe he suffers a career ending knee injury the first week of training camp rookie minicamp he can go back to Clemson and finish up I get what you're saying now look I think there's something commendable about finishing what you started you know that yeah I think there's some kids maybe feel like you know what.

"shanti pendergast" Discussed on WEEI

"As well at Shanti Pendergast they do check Twitter throughout the show I reply sometimes I retweets on there sometimes if getting on the phone and talking to me verbally is not your thing twenty nineteen who uses their phone to talk to people anymore the only thing I don't use my phone for us to talk to people but if if you're not into that if you just want to tweet me at Shanti Pendergast Sean is S. E. A. N. T. and then Pendergast public it sounds so as we are off and running here on a on a Sunday I will mention that Steve says it will be our first guest out of the chute little later on this are about forty past the hour he's our gambling expert and with this injury luck news they're gambling angles to this where there's probably a lot of angry people sitting on cold Superbowl tickets that they got a ten to one or twelve to one and are now hoping for Jacoby per set to win the money and I'll tell you now that's not gonna happen however I do think the colts are gonna be a little better off than some do so let's get started there if we will that that was that the big new last night so just to give you a little insight into my weekend so last night I a was up here to studios at our inner calm offices here in Houston Texas I'm watching on a big movie screen that we have I was watching the the the Texans in the cowboys play a pre season game I do the post game show for the Houston Texans where the flagship for Houston's NFL team and so I was up here with a clean starter former cowboys cornerback could do the the post game show with Seth Payne my my weekday co host who is a former defensive tackle in the league for ten years and we were up here watching just an atrocity of a game of your tax and then it was a terrible game did the Texans first two plays Lamar Miller gets injured and is out for the season and then to Sean Watson on the next play get strip sacked fumbled and gives up the football and they lose their life guard on that play Zach Fulton so isn't it in any given game to get any better after that so you can imagine doing a post game show for a pre season game already is a bit of a dicey situation terms of compelling content imagine one where the team that the fan base you are you are doing radio for a probably checked out in this game about ten minutes into it so we're we're cynical man what this is gonna be an interesting night to cobble together some topics we're going to fabricate some things here boy let me tell you and then all of a sudden I don't know where Adam laughed for look Adam Schefter tweets Andrew lock is gonna be retiring after the game after the colts you called section again last night after that game Andrew luck made it official and announced his retirement and here that is for the last four years or so I've been in the cycle of injury pain rehab enjoy your injury pain rehab and it's been unceasing and relenting unrelenting both in season both or not and offices in all right so that that was that was injure luck and he and again it's the it's the physical toll that the game has taken on Andrew luck there his that has led him to this Andrew luck is a different kind of cat he went to Stanford he has options right arm put alternately said he can't live the life he wants to live and he's lost his joy in football here's a follow up from interlock I haven't been able to live the life I want to live taking the joy out of this game then after two thousand sixteen were played in pain and was unable to regular practice I made a vow to myself that I would not go down that path again I find myself in a similar situation and the only way forward formally as remove myself from football in the cycle that I've been in let me just say I have great respect for Andrew luck and I I have great respect for that decision and no I can't relate to being an NFL player but I like I think thousands and thousands of you listening can relate to making career decisions and negotiating prices with yourself as to okay if this then that an injury lawyers leaving on a lot of money on the table not that he's hurting for money he's made a hundred million dollars in his career he'll be fine but he is facing some criticism for this decision which people can have their opinions I find it somewhat baffling the people are criticizing somebody over deciding to take their career in a certain way because they don't have any joy in what they do anymore specially somebody who has probably many many options out there as to what they can go do there are a lot of football ramifications from from this story the AFC south all of a sudden is turned upside down you can remove one Superbowl contender I think the culture on the short list of the top five or six teams the people thought would win the Superbowl in twenty nineteen I think the colts run the short list of teams maybe even shorter list of teams in the one for this year they were on an even shorter list where you felt like this is a team that's going to win a Superbowl sometime in the next five years enter look was a big reason for that but Chris Ballard the general manager has done an amazing job of building that roster as well which could wind up being a catch twenty two for the colts unlike in years past where they were bad enough to get the number one overall pick in draft Peyton manning and then in twenty eleven bad enough to get the pick to draft Andrew luck I don't know that the calls are going to be bad for a while I don't know that they're going to be great or even good but I can tell you right now they're not going three thirteen next year build a hell of an offense of wine and a good defense there are good enough now we're if they get slightly below average quarterback play they can win eight or nine games so there there's a lot of football ramifications to this that I want to dig into throughout the evening but to me the biggest takeaway last night was the reaction that I just alluded to certainly reaction by media members who were calling lock millennial calling in soft because he was doing this because he was making a decision calling them soft and calling him a millennia when only he knows what pain he's gone through he just outlined it for years in a row of pain rehab pain rehab missing a whole season it messes with you I'm sure it's it to me and then me being here in Houston it's what makes JJ what's come back to where he is now back to being one of the best players in football so amazing to me is that guy went through two back surgeries and a broken leg and now here he is in really any player who makes it all the way back from stuff like this should be celebrated and if Andrew luck chooses to hang it up and go do something else because he has the means to go do that he has the financial means he has the educational means to go do that who are we to say that he's making the wrong decision you don't have to like it but to the colts fans who booed Andrew luck last night you bunch warms with your Peyton manning jerseys tucked into your dad jeans up there in Indianapolis I mean I you can you're protected by your first amendment rights to brew interlock right you're not doing anything illegal but I'm also protected by my first amendment right to tell you that you guys are losers and gals if there were any females Boeing I just am generally speaking I'm not a bore like I kind of think people they blew it games are losers anyways but if your brewing a guy who essentially sacrifices body the last seven years as he's walking off the field because he retired because that your jerseys obsolete because your city that locked into two no pun intended into two of the best quarterbacks of the last twenty five years because you happen to get the number one overall pick in those two seasons but you're not jilted all of a sudden the your city that's had one really bad football season Andrew luck getting injured in the last twenty years and that bad season got you enter lock how dare you guys blew think about this if you look at the Stanford graduate who's retiring at the age of twenty nine with a hundred million dollars in the bank so he go travel the world isn't that the goal of like thirty percent of the people to go to Stanford like fifty percent of the people maybe like half the people to go to Stanford I feel like when they write down their mission statement for life say I want to retire at age twenty nine with a hundred million dollars in the bank Andrew luck did that along with probably a slew of his classmates from from Stanford one of the greatest institutions in the world he just did a playing football you don't like it because he did it and all he was on my team and I have his Jersey you're all I drafted him in fantasy last week if if you wear his Jersey in your drafted him in fantasy and you blew or you're tweeting about how millennial he is or what a bad decision this is Ross off the is you're a loser none of us are in an NFL locker room none of us had any clue what it takes to endure being an NFL player our opinion on was this quote the right thing to do is totally invalid because it's not our decision the opinions that we have on the football ramifications those are valid and I probably am will agree and disagree over who's now favor in the AFC south where the colts go from here are they equipped to have a decent season this year but I feel like even having an opinion on did you do the right thing is it it's invalid it's not a topic you can have an opinion on it's his it's whether or not it's the right thing it is for him to decide now whether or not it's got an effect where this is going to crater the colts franchise that we can debate Erin foster told me one time I used to do a weekly show there in foster about seven or eight years ago back when he was at the height of his powers any used to sell the time man we're just chess pieces on the board and so we are you know those back when hearing at people tweeting at him about his hamstring getting hurt I'm in asking him if he is gonna be ready for his you know for fantasy for their fantasy team this weekend and I would imagine it does make you feel a little objectified makes you feel like a slab of meat Merion foster would say were chess pieces that was never more evident than last night that our people fifty feet away from Andrew luck just pulling him because the guy decided to to go do something else but yeah man in Indianapolis viewer brewing interlock it's like think about think think about how fortunate you guys have been in Indianapolis as fans of football that you happen to get the number one overall pick in years for Peyton manning and Andrew luck for the quarterbacks in your brewing if there is like there's twenty thousand you in that stadium and have a gigantic Virginia ham tucked under your arm and your brewing that you don't have any bread it's unbelievable so my question for you tonight we're colts fans on a line how do you think they should feel how would you feel if this were your team and your quarterback if you're a colts fan or a fan of any team directly impacted by interlocks retirement I am I'm here in Houston directly impacts the Texans we're now the favorites to win the AFC south despite looking like a pop Warner team against the cowboys last night so I want your thoughts eight five five two one two four CBS eight five five two one two four two two seven a lot of other stuff to dig into the enter luck retirement obviously the big topic so let's.

"Listening to the show on you can tweak Shanti Shanti Pendergast here's shown fender yes final segment of the show eight five five two one two for CBS to to get in on the program you can steal one player from the other thirty one NFL teams it can't be a quarterback that's the only rule who would it be for your team eight five five two one two four CVS so here's where we are right now with the MLB trade deadline it will hit the phones here in just a second you're on old stay there here's where we are right now with basically three days left until the only trade deadline in baseball now there is no August thirty first mall again for the July thirty first trade deadline where you can still trade for guys the clear waivers that trade deadline in twenty seventeen allow the Astros to trade for Justin Berliner that does not exist as you're you're going to get stuff done you got to get it done by Wednesday and as we sit here waiting for business to pick up the most prominent names are all starting pitchers Trevor Bauer Marcus Stroman Madison Bumgarner Matthew Boyd of Detroit is the name Noah Syndergaard of the mats if we're assessing where the trade deadline is right now like where we're at with these deals like if we're looking ahead to the potential blockbuster nature of what could be going on in baseball over the next three days not super optimistic we're gonna see a lot of blockbusters Stroman was traded today to the mats and so who knows what the Mets are doing with Syndergaard now this trading for Stroman mean they're more likely to move them does it mean that they're trading for Stroman hanging on to send a card and then basically looking ahead to twenty twenty signed a look we got a pretty good one two punch at the top of the rotation they still got Wheeler on their staff Trevor Bauer meanwhile is probably most noteworthy in the moment for heating up all over the center field bleachers because he was so angry for being taking out taken out of the game today Madison Bumgarner is probably not gonna get moved because the giants have found themselves back in the race hello I mean who knows about hours gonna end up getting moved by the Indians I'm just telling you what happened with him today he pitched a hissy fit and threw a ball into the centerfield stands that happened go find it it's pretty funny but I tend to agree with Bob Nightengale of USA today we had a little bit earlier this trade deadline might be a gigantic popcorn for heating use those words he's a little classier than I am I am using those words in in there some bullpen help the could be floating around out there I just laugh every time I hear the name Ken Giles take teams could be going after ten Giles and all I can think of I know he's been on Toronto the last couple of years because the Astros traded in there for bird sooner I'm just I all I can think back to his Giles in the twenty seventeen post season and how he was such a disaster they couldn't picture many more there's a reason Charlie Morton was closing game seven of the World Series you could not use can Giles by the time they got to the mid point of the ALCS he was toast you may as well let me out there trying to save games I guess it's not okay form up in Toronto admittedly I don't watch a lot of Toronto Blue Jays baseball but he's got any already under two and everybody needs bullpen help this time of year I eight five five two one two four CBS let's so let's work as many of you in as we can between now and the top of the hour let's go to Miami and talk to Robert Robert you're up on CBS sports radio was shaken the door shut or else I mean you talk about you and your brother Musonda please put a national championship yeah that's right yeah yeah my world or I want to talk a little baseball which you must so my nephew was traded begin season from the Philadelphia Phillies to the Seattle Mariners J. P. Crawford okay a short stop in there you know what your what your topic but do who what where when I will quickly to coach you are with our very first year okay you're the second Larry fitzgerald of the night we learned that you're a little bit earlier Robert look I look I love Larry fitzgerald he's a hall of Famer he still plays at a very high level I'm assuming you're a colts fan why wouldn't it be one of the younger receivers world city all we're we're with AP AP would've been a distraction because you got to be with that and they were playing football the team there we we the new growth that we have now we don't need a distraction we need to go to the Superbowl so Larry would help lock out bar is so quarterback you'd skills and route ready what a great compliment he would be to T. Y. Hilton to ha right right right you know we don't need a distraction now's not because you got you got AB would be just the destruction to probably what a ball in power and you know to really we try and we and now yeah yeah that's what I will unite us well joke zero it's interesting yeah interesting choice Robert I appreciate the phone always appreciate you checking back in Robert thank you very much on November stylistically going for receiver that will complement T. Y. Hilton mine my choice would be the honoree Hopkins but I'm not gonna I can't hate on somebody taking Larry fitzgerald and you're right it's a colts team is ready to go win a Superbowl I know they got blown out by the chiefs in the playoffs last year but they were a really good team after that one in five star they win ninety one down the stretch one a road playoff game against the Texans and then they just ran into a bus on Patrick homes in the chiefs I take Hopkins I there's probably a couple of the guys I take it had if it's your old I mean he's an older player but if you feel like it's one moved to get you over the top you know because you got to take these guys I guess you could argue you're gonna take their contracts as well I don't know if it's your old contract looks like I just know Hopkins is a really really highly paid receiver as easily Jones and some other guys let's go to fort worth talked to Brandon Brandon you're up on CBS sports radio what's going on Hey are we going I just wanted to you know kind of backtrack on the whole of the contract you know zinc is a great player you know he he finally the great running back but you know he have a middle of sale the lime light you know the spotlight and I don't believe that you should get a contract this year nove always backed him up you know throughout the past and he was a great strength to the offense but now we don't have Scott when they're now we're on a new new path and I mean I believe that you know he needs to stay clean you know or stay clear for another year and then go back to a contract yes the crazy thing to me Brandon about this Eliot situation is there Elliott is a guy and I know some and it you know some cowboys fans emit maybe not tell within maybe even just some some people will dispute whether or not he should have even been suspended for six games and and I get debating it because Roger Goodell so haphazard with the way he he gives out punishment but there's no denying the fact that there once he was in the cross hairs of being suspended he's he's out in public doing silly things making silly decisions like that but like the you know the Saint Patrick's day parade with the girl there in the you know and and lifted up the shirt the thing in Vegas this offseason like your Ezekiel Elliott why would you get within why would you get within five hundred yards of somewhere where you love a security guard that you feel like you got a beef with you know what I mean like why would you put yourself in a position where there's a video out there of you shoving a security guard to the ground and standing over him menacingly like it's those they're they're all feeding arrested for it he gets suspended for by the NFL but these are all things that just are still indicative in a fairly recent time of somebody who just doesn't always make the best decisions it's to me you've got to be not only super special on the field you got to be super special off the field to be demanding a long term deal just three years into your NFL career as a first round pick exactly on him that you know he he does on our feel like the way you played you deserve a big contract but you know he needs to stay out of that spotlight you know give you gonna be in the crosshairs yeah absolutely Brandon I purchased all try to get through a season where you don't have to go visit Roger Goodell the answer for something that you did how's that for a benchmark it'll be interesting interesting to see when he comes in because he doesn't have the contractual right to hold out like sage Debbie and cloudy who is it under contract right now is get a franchise tag tender sitting there be isn't signed it money is not confined to dine to sit at home I let's go to Largo and talk to hall hall I you were up on CBS sports radio what's going on great shared Sean thank you say I'm an eagle fan and I would take se Kwan Barkley is there's a lector trying to think it okay so you got to get that often together with great offense of line you drafted Andre dealer do you still got lane Johnson and Jason Peters and the other guys on that offense of line you got a healthy Carson Wentz coming back you've got all those receipt you get one of the best tight ends in sacker you got a pretty nice receiving corps with with Jeffrey an aggro are and in some other guys there so you're saying that the icing on the cake would be you get one of the most dynamic running backs in the league and that office is going to be unstoppable that we are saying to yourself yeah because I know they need a lot of help in may be back area but with that out and they'd be unstoppable you'd be watching a lot of exciting football out there man ethical think people want a lot of games played in the thirties right definitely absolutely I appreciate the phone call I say honestly he's in Largo Florida so but in eagle thing I can tell eagle fan I can tell by the accent that's all I can tell let's finish it up here in Houston with al al you're up on CBS sports radio what's happening we're sorry to above.
