"On tuesday. Democrats voted in the primary for a special election to fill the congressional seat. In ohio's eleventh district marcia fudge vacated that seat to join president biden's cabinet as housing secretary shantelle brown the chairwoman of the cuyahoga county democratic party won the primary beating out nina turner a former state senator and co chair of senator bernie sanders presidential campaign now. Ohio eleven is a safe. Democratic district and brown is strongly favored to win the general election in november. Now this single how seat though. It's a big deal because the battle between brown and turner was billed as a surrogate showdown between the progressive and moderate forces in the national democratic party. Here to walk through the special election. Primary and ohio is julie car might and ap reporter based in ohio. Welcome julie happy to be here. And amy walter is back with us to talk politics. Amy's the editor in chief of the cook. Political report with amy walter and former host of politics with amy walter the takeaway. Welcome back amy. I am once again so very happy to be here. All right julie. I have to say. I was surprised by the results. Turner look like the front runner and had a lot more fundraising dollars. How that brown one this well. What we saw was this huge surge in the last several weeks of the campaign. And you're absolutely right. Nina turner had been campaigning. Hard here for months and She's a firebrand fiery speaker Inspires law of crowds who are favorable toward bernie sanders and all of the sudden shantelle brown became the local favourite Establishment democrats like jim clyburn and hillary clinton and others a hopped into the race and got behind her a bunch of unions And a bunch of super pacs. amy All politics are local. That's the great story. And yet this one was certainly hyper local but also very much not mobile. That's right my like now. It's all politics is local. Except when it's not and more and more. It's not and i think in many ways. It was the sort of proxy fight between the biden and bernie sanders wings of the party. But really what it. What it is is not ideological is much more about the kind of person to sit in the seat in terms of their temperament their personality. More important whether this person is going to be a team player. Which is what. Sean brown was arguing. Not only going to be a backer of joe biden. Which joe biden won this district in the primary against bernie sanders. Hilary clinton won this district overwhelmingly back in two thousand sixteen against bernie sanders. So saying i'm going to be on the team which nina turn has come out against both of those leaders when she was with the sanders campaign. I'm going to be on the team. I'm gonna be a vote with leadership. You can't count on nina turner being part of the team. She is a rogue agent and when democrats have just a narrow majority in the house. When joe biden's agenda depends on fifty. Senator sticking together in every single one of the democrats in the house sticking together. We can't afford to have a rogue individual on the democratic side Julie helped me walk through this a little bit. Because in certain ways. Nina turner is robustness is precisely why she is who she is. On a national stage it was her willingness to go against the establishment repeatedly at the state level. That is what made her so popular and also in ohio supposed to be pretty independent thinking. That's a really good point. And of course. Ironically the day ohioans made this choice was the same day that progressives in washington achieved of big goal of pressuring president biden to kind of rollback his his reticence on this eviction moratorium. So yeah they were seeing. Some huge victories and that kind of pressure was what they wanted to continue with her but I do think that is right that the idea that she might defect from a democratic majority. That's so slim. Was maybe frightening to some of these. Democrats are we at a p had had a poll that showed really the democratic party. Loyalists are very happy with their party. Right now they're happy with biden. They're happy with what's happening in terms of the agenda and they really wanted that to the extent that they poured into our state and started rallying for her and Nina turner who had had a double digit lead early on and for a long time. According to you know whatever polling was available just wasn't able to overcome. So i'm also interested amy in the kind of race gender politics of this. I mean these are the two black women running for a seat recently. Vacated by a black woman and held prior to that another. Wipe woman stephanie. Tubbs jones who passed away suddenly in quite young in two thousand eight. And i'm wondering about this idea of being an african american woman but also be a team player for the democrats. I mean that's something. We get called on all the time by the party as voters and apparently as legislators and yet the congressional black caucus has also always been kind of the conscience of the party pushing the party to be a bit more progressive than it. Otherwise would be so. Is that changing. That's a really good point and remember the cbc came out and endorsed trump l brown in this race. Jim clyburn went out and campaigned for brown. Which while we think of him as somebody who gets involved in politics obviously his endorsement of of then candidate joe biden was critical in the twenty twenty primary. And he's not the kind of person who shows up into individual house races. But i think that why you saw the cbc engaged here was the sense of. We do need a Sticking together ness right that our ability to actually get things done to shift the conversation to make sure our priorities are put on the front burner is to be united and to be united means that everybody understands that we gotta work together on this team and i think what really frustrated so many folks about turner jim clyburn said this specifically was the fact that it's not just that she wants to push the establishment or to speak her mind. It's that she publicly attacked. Kleiber publicly attacked biden was circumspect about her 2016 vote in other words that not only did was she not a supporter of hillary clinton in the primary but may not have voted for her against donald trump. And so. I do think that there was a look. We understand the important role that african american voters play in the election that play to the core of the democratic base. How important they are and at the same time. Wanna get anything done. We all have to be rowing in the same direction. All right julie. Let's talk about the general election. That is coming up now again. Ohio eleven should be a safe democratic district. But as i was just talking about around black women holding the seat turns out. The republican nominee is also an african american woman. Is that gonna make a difference in. It's very interesting isn't it. So laverne gore is her name and she's lay won. The republican primary. There wasn't really much competition but doesn't that in some ways begin to a race The ability of shantelle ground to talk about Black and women's issues in november as a way to choose her over laverne gore Gore is going to try to talk about the failure of democratic leadership in the city of cleveland..

"On also in our family Big day today. Rachel campbell's birthday rachel of course has been with such a long time and for those who ask a question. How do you get involved in Tv news well. rachel. Of course willie was our bell bondsman in turkey quite some time ago. We thought we were going to have to kind of finish. Papillon way jumping off the cliff. Rachel now. I got this best bells bondsman from turkey. Franker all the way down to now tunisia so but but she does an awful lot. We greatly appreciate everything she does. Yes she's great. And i'll never forget. I thought we were in for life. We're in that. Isolation cell door opens silhouette. And she said you guys have been sprung and it was rachel campbell. So we're very grateful to her and we wish look. Let's get back to the news yesterday. We told you about shantelle brown and her win over nina turner in the ohio democratic congressional primary and the eleventh district. They're brown is a moderate who aligned herself with president biden turner of progressive back by bernie sanders in the latest in a string of elections. This year that have served as something perhaps a reality check for the left flank of the party. Moderate democrats have one in new york virginia louisiana and now in ohio congressman had keen jeffries of new york. A top member of house leadership said in an interview with the new york times yesterday. Democratic voters clearly were rejecting candidates from the party's most strident in ideological flank congressman. Jeffrey saying quote. The extreme left is obsessed with talking trash about mainstream democrats on twitter when the majority of the electorate constitute mainstream democrats at the polls in the post trump era. The anti-establishment line of attack is lane. When president biden democratic legislators are delivering millions of good paying jobs. The fastest growing economy in forty years and a massive child tax cut jeffries went on to tell the times the majority of democratic voters recognize trumpism and the radical. Right is the real enemy not us. Apparently the extreme left has not figured that out pretty extraordinary comments there. Joe from congressman had keen jeffries of new york progressive himself but obviously frustrated with the farthest left corners of his party. Well and it's a real battle as they go into an election next year where the republicans hold every conceivable advantage. If you look at redistricting historical. Trans reverend al You're starting to sense. Really more of an urgency among democrats distort following the guidance that you've been giving on this program for a very long time and that is just say no to live Liberals and get commonsense mainstream democrats and win elections. It is career that there's a sense of urgency and in a sense of. You can't not continue to be intimidated by people that are not speaking on behalf of the people you represent. Hockey jeffries is a progressive. He's a prudent progressive. Jim claburn is a progressive a prudent progressing but for people to try and act like that the most extreme and offensive and insulting kind of a name calling makes them a progressive when they're doing it against people that had to fight to get into the mainstream they act like Jim clyburn was born in the mainstream. Here's a man who went to jail him. And his wife fighting certification in here you have some trust fund babies telling him how to be a fighter and think that that's what we're trying to deal with in terms of these messages that we're getting hit all of these elections and they come in with these. You know holier than thou a proposal that no one believes can become law. When i was a young men aside was mentored by god always told me. Don't just give people pie in this guy by. And by when they die give them something sound on the ground while they're still around and again you've been talking about these some of these people that are so disconnected that speak to communities but never go to communities. Never go where the people live. And you're talking specifically communities of color. We saw it back in. In twenty twenty we saw that it was in fact black women predominantly but also black men. That helped joe biden win south carolina and sweep to the presidency. And we've seen it in one race after another this year and the fact that a manager is that a lot of the latte liberals as calling them act like we're what is it that braxton south carolina are stupid are they saying no. We're voting our interests would a practical. You can't in race after race. After race see the majority of black voters particularly black women brown voters vote against a lot of what they're talking about an act like for some reason they don't have enough sense to rise to their intellectual level. No maybe they rejected because they have to practically raise families in situations that are disadvantage and disproportionately not getting the goods and services that other communities are getting and they rather have practical prudent progressive politicians rather than people that want to dream at the expense. jonathan lemere despite recent setbacks to the polls in ohio and of course in new york city last year in the presidential race in the democratic primaries progressives did score a win over the past few days and feel like they have a roadmap t they can employ ahead on other policy fights with the by administration. You're right that's right joe. That's my reporting today. Certainly they've taken a string of defeats in these races across the country but they did have a real success here in washington over the last week to this point. Progressive largely held their fire in terms of the biden administration. Even though to many of them the white house has gone too slowly on things like climate change things like voting rights as it spent more energy to recording this bipartisan infrastructure. Deal wooing both moderate democrats as well as even republicans to get those things done but this week we saw was representative corey bush and her all night. Sleep the stakeout in issues on the capitol steps for days as she stayed there day and night she attract attention from other liberal lawmakers. Whether it's afc bernie sanders drop by elizabeth warren and dragged a huge amount of media attention to progressive said..

"With enforcement beginning in mid september people will be able to show their vaccine status using a paper. Cdc vaccine card or an existing vaccine passport app couple of special primary election. Ohio on tuesday with surprising outcomes in the eleventh district bernie sanders surrogate progressive. Nina turner suffered a brutal loss to shantelle brown. The cuyahoga county councilwoman had massive support from the establishment wing of the democratic party with james clyburn hillary clinton and the congressional black caucus all offering massive support ensuring. They're win in the latest grudge match between the conservative and progressive wings of the democratic party. Brown will go up against the republican nominee laverne gore and the general election in november in the fifteenth congressional district a coal lobbyist. Mike carry won the republican primary for vacant house seat. There carry had the backing of the former guy who was running in a crowded field of candidates but carry got thirty. Six percent of the. Vote to second-place bob peterson's fourteen percent and finally ipsos polling company asked an unvaccinated polling sample. Who they blamed for the current spread of coverted thirty seven percent said people travelling from other countries to the us. Twenty seven percent blamed the mainstream media. Twenty-three percent blamed americans traveling abroad. Twenty one percent blamed. Joe biden and ten percent of them blamed the unvaccinated. I think we need to get ninety percent of them a mirror. "And mika and just a few minutes we'll talk to new york city mayor bill de blasio. Who was put in vaccine mandates. The first of their kind in the country for a major city for certain indoor places. We interesting to hear him. Explain that by look forward to that. Let's bring in white house editor for politico sam stein. This morning politico morning consult have new polling on teachers unions and the pandemic sam. What are they show well. They're not exactly favorable of teachers. Seaton's right now we've measured that we think of the job that teachers unions are doing thirty one percent good excellent forty percent bear for you can see some ideological breakdown there but even among democrats only forty eight percent say good excellent job by teachers unions if you dig a little bit deeper favorable ratings for teachers unions thirty seven favorable. Twenty five percent unfavorable. I think people you know if you the main takeaway here as we talk about a lot on the show. People are frustrated They're angsty about What's going on with schools. There's a lot of apprehension about whether or not schools will reopen in troll this coming and they're pinning the blame On teachers unions at least part of the topic is pin the blame on teachers unions for a holding up the process of reopening schools. Eating say look. We're trying to make it safer members But you know we spend ten billion dollars on school retrofitting We we have authorized a lot. More money i think at this point the public saying get those schools open so you also have some results on mask mandates. What'd that show you. Yeah i mean there's so there's ideological split on mandates as you can imagine you look at. We asked them. What do you do you. Support an indoor and outdoor mandate versus indoor but no or mandate you can see. The numbers are pacific. The main takeaways. If you're a republican you're more likely than not to oppose mandates for wearing whether it's indoor and outdoors or just indoors. Democrats and independents. Much more evenly split. There's appetite in the public to do some sort of mandate for masks whether it's indoors and outdoors or indoors but when you ask republican voters it just disappears and i think that's what you're witnessing across. The country talked a little bit ron. To santa's he's not stupid he reads all's he knows where his base is on. This and i think he's reflecting that attitude. You know it's interesting. There's not as wide of a gap on this issue is or may have been six months ago nine months ago on other covet issues sam you look at the look at the numbers for indoor mandates but not outdoor mandates not a huge gap between republicans and democrats suspect that that americans are really moving more toward each other on the issue of those masks mandates as well as making sure that kids get back in school. I mean a year ago right. Obviously we were. Hearing from health officials at getting kids back in school would be a way that the corona virus spread its way it spread in the pandemic of nineteen eighteen nineteen nineteen. That just hasn't been the case over the last year and parents Almost universally want their children back in school. Which maybe is what led to that first poll showed. Yeah i mean. I think people are just smarter now right moods we've been through about sixteen seventeen months of this. We see the evidence in front of us. Maybe not empirical Maybe anecdotal but we see which is one. The disease tends to not spread. If you're outdoors. So maybe don't need matt nasty mandated outdoors and to. It's very limited spread among kids in schools when when schools do reopen. And so when you see that when you witnessed that in real time then your attitudes will end up reflecting the reality that you see. And that's why it to your point. Show a little bit more of a convergence on mandates for masks indoors and real growing anxiety about schools reopening in the fall and anger pointing at teachers unions for being somewhat resistant to it. All right politico sam stein. Thank you very much for being with this morning and coming up under pressure from progressives the biden administration issues a new eviction moratorium after a federal ban expired plus the democrat. Who bested a bernie. Sanders backed opponent to win a special election in ohio u s congressional candidate. Shantelle brown joins us next on morning. Joe when simplisafe home security's founders chat..

"Like we will support the powerful ignore the powerless. It's incredible. It's absolutely incredible. Shows called indisputable. That is an indisputable point. When you ever heard a politician say. I will support the homeless with no conditions. Okay no matter. What the homeless do i will them. By the way you said about the poor you can say about eight about almost anything. Say about the average american worker. No the the the only thing you say that about is apparently is israel and to the press. they don't make note of it. They think that's interesting. Look guys on t. Warranty we will never tolerate any anti-semitist right and we fight against that when the the monsters the right wing do it a and we always do that. So the religion and supporting the state of israel current right-wing oppressive government of israel are two totally different things. Right so i'm against the current turkish government. Even though i'm turkish by the way i was vehemently against the american government when trump was president. And i'm an american okay so this do with religion but when it comes to the israeli lobby in this country gloves her off you guys wanna come at people at progresses and spend millions of dollars so you could buy loyalty to the right wing government of israel. We're gonna call you out and we're gonna call you out super aggressively and i'm not listening any goddamn mainstream media journalists so-called journalists. So oh okay. I'm gonna take a perfect with legitimate point about them spending millions of dollars to take out one progressive after another and then call you anti semitic loss. Call me anything you like. You've already done it you but thousand times. We've got nothing left to lose. You guys are liars. We know it doesn't matter you can make anything you like. Everybody brings some stuff about me. Just go online. It doesn't matter. He just joined the line. It's a big party you're late. Call me anything you like okay. But i'm going to call out israeli lobby in this country super aggressively they spend millions upon millions upon millions of dollars and they demand loyalty to another country. I would be. I would hate it. If it was about turkey or canada or norway or any other country that i liked and i'm not going to tolerate it for israel. No this is insane corruption insane corruption. Now sean tell brown says that said i have given over my judgment my mind my willpower to the people who bought me. Those are the lobbyists and they did by her any honest. Accounting of this election would say that the democratic majority for israel bought shantelle brown lock stock and barrel. That is a fact. Go ahead and write it. Go ahead and write it. Okay i believe jiang said that. Right okay then. Are you going to write the the context of full context. Oh by the way they spend millions of dollars and she did say this she would never question. The state of are gonna write that. No if you're making me reporter. God damn liar and you you almost certainly will not right the context so it doesn't matter. I know you're already not going to write the context. We have nothing left to lose. We have nothing left to loose. Okay so enjoy. Got more where that came from getting quick update and apparently she's gonna pew poor fuel. My firearm the members only bonus episode starts in a few minutes. I'm not saying that about the results. I'm saying i wanna keep going but anyway forty nine point eight to forty four point seven so that's a a five point one percent lead with almost sixty thousand reporting. Can you make five points in about ten to twelve thousand votes super hard but not impossible. That's why it hasn't been called. And it is about a three thousand vote difference now with about eleven to twelve thousand votes actually left or she'd have to win substantial number of those but it's not impossible I'm going to a couple of quick things here. Shameless kali road keep fighting. This is super chan. Weisberg said nina will always be a winner. Mu young said bernie laws choice for president..

"Special primary election coverage in ohio district. Chink an-and rashad with you guys and you as well All danica and the members w and black road youtube super check come on cleveland. Pull nina through for all of us and in our member section happily backs wrote in john's work studying accounts. Okay and on the couch okay. That's true john normally does do that. I hope we don't have to do a damage report at the end of this night okay. I hope our win is indisputable. Cam here is e so since we last left you the count has not changed. Fifty one point eight to forty two point no So that is a little under ten point lead for chantal brown over nina turner But as we told you before not a lot of precincts reporting in and we are now getting word that that a lot of reports will come in in a not quite in a little bit but in a reasonable period of time tonight or costa. So stay here. It looks like the bigger results are going to come in a little bit later. But but soon. Aren't i a thousand more things. We all do so but let me go rashad. I you know context matters right. So i want to read two very different things as relates to these candidates and you can find both on their website so when you go to shantelle. Brown's website says and i quote over the last ten years. Shantelle brown has developed a personal and professional rapport with congresswoman fudge. Through this relationship. Sean tail has developed strong democratic values and thoroughly understand the history of needs of the eleventh congressional district. This is under why you should vote for chantal brown. According to sean taylor brown. You should vote for her because she knows a congresswoman. Yep this is the personality over policy. This is the good old boy system in this case. they're not boys But this is the same philosophy that also exists in republican politics as well. Now let me read to you. What's on nina turner's page. Nate attorney says. I'm running for congress because black lives matter. Healthcare's human right. The climate crisis is existential. Private prison should not exist and everyone deserves a living wage mic. Drop a policy first agenda. You go to shut. Brown's website her policy platform even when you expand the platform to read defined print. This ain't own there. What need attorneys talking about shot. Joe brown is not you. Don't get more clear than a policy. That's present on one platform and completely absent on the other. And here's the other irony of that literally shantelle brown campaign or started to campaign on policy platforms. That aren't even listed on her website for her policy agenda. Yeah so that is such a great point. Now let me let me expand upon it. I lived this race. I don't wanna make it about me. I'm only telling you this because it gives you a perfect sense of exactly. How democratic politics works because they ran the same exact playbook in two completely different races california twenty-five ohio eleven now in california twenty-five christy smith had almost no policies on our website just like shawntel brown. Okay i had pages of policies on my website. And i would beg the reporters please. Are you ever going to talk about policy and one time in a. Times reporter was unbelievably honest with me. Now he didn't say it in public but he said it to me on the phone he said no we likely will not run any stories on policy okay and so then chris smith would constantly talk about nancy pelosi. Endorse me katie hill. Endorse me person. Endorse me that democrat endorsed me that other democrat endorsed me. And then in her speeches she would keep everything generic in one of her mailers. I miller was. I'm for firefighters veterans. Well you left out puppies and rainbows. Okay everybody's providers in veterans. Who's that's not a policy position. That's absurd right and in in both chrissy smith and shantelle brown. I think we might even have it on tape both the same exact line. Which is i've been wanting to be a congressperson my whole life. Well congratulations to you. But it isn't about you but for those folks. It is so if you always wanted to attain that status that fame that power. Well you'll do anything for it so if this abbotsford coming in says comes in and says do as you're told the christy smith on the sean tell brown's the world yes of course i will. What do you need. i'll do it. And they brag about it on the campaign trail. Sean brown says it christi used to say i'll do anything leadership says. I'm a loyal democrat. i'll do is. I'm told the problem with nina. Turner is she's not controllable and think about it guys. What does that tell you. Same playbook to completely different races. It tells you the playbook is just shut up and do as you're told and we'll give you all the money all the support and all the endorsements that you need but if you ever dare think for yourself and you step out of line and you will not toe the corporate lobbyists position. We're gonna come for you. And they're and they came for nina turner millions upon millions of dollars poured into that race in a democratic primary. it's not against republicans is not against trump is not against any of that. It's against the progressive who might expose them so and by the way. I mean you want to hear about picking generic candidates because to them. What difference does it make. It's from the same factory that was designed it right. You make these corporate robot so you roll them down the line. At least buddha just had an interesting name. look at the two candidates. I'm talking about one is name smith other brown. It's almost like adam you put it in a movie. That's a little on the news. Come on the two. Generic candidates are named smith and brown right and and california. Twenty five is predominantly white. Christy smith is the whitest person you'll ever see. Ohio eleventh is predominantly black. Okay then we get. A black candidate doesn't matter. The factories can make more. You get predominantly asian community. The corporate democrats will find an asian person to run. Who'll tell them. The democratic leadership is great and they'll never disagree with them and he will do exactly as the lobbyists album. And don't forget before jim clyburn. Before hillary clinton the first set of folks who pick shell brown or the lobbyists they started doing ads for her and then hillary clinton clinton came in and said who the lobbyists pick. Because what does she know by the eleventh district. And the twelve generic establishment candidates running against turner. She's like oh democratic majority for israel exxon mobil the drug companies the banks. They're all going for shawntel. Brown that hillary clinton was for chantal brown. And so is jim clyburn. And so we're all the corporate democrats and that's how this game is played. Okay so look let me go further now on identity. I keep bringing my race back in here. I don't like talking about it for a number of races of mainly. Because i keep it really the loss and it didn't. It wasn't even close right now. Nina has million advantages over me. She's a great candidate. I don't want to get back into litigating my race. I'm only telling you because it's an is capable parallel and they run the same tactics over and over and over again and you could tell when it's too racist and not just one right so But in that race. I remember talking to this one. I remember maybe more than any other voter. This african american woman came into a town hall. That i was doing now for in most of the town halls. We tried to reach out to every community. Because you know. I'm less well known than their state. Legislators while i'm running against so. I want new people to come in. But of course people know me that are fans and viewers and progressives et cetera. Mainly progressives would come in and people who already knew me coming but if if people came in that didn't know i loved it right and this woman didn't know me from adam okay. She was african married woman. Maybe about our in our fifties. You know i'm just guessing here. But roughly right and as she listened to me for bless her heart for like an hour and a half. She has a bunch of questions to great questions and at the end. I said okay now for those of you who would like to go. Campus and come join us if he can and she grabbed a clipboard and came up to me. Said i'm in okay. And i saw this amazing. What what what happened. She said look. I never heard the things you're say. And now that i heard you of course i want healthcare And and the way you explained how they kind of misled me on medicare for all a little bit angry about it right and it's obvious from all the things that you're saying is that you're right and she said and rashad..

David especially since you were for the thing that surprises me about all this is that it seems to have been a pattern of behavior for a long time and a lot of it. How did he is. How did he skate this for so long. I did not see that particular behavior. I mean he can be tough on people around him. There's no doubt about it. I didn't see that particular behavior then. And i don't know if his behavior changed you're right. It was over a long period of time. When i worked for him. He was running for attorney general in the state but also times have changed and so people are more willing to come forward. It takes a lot to come forward. The interesting thing is this report. Gibbs was something that cuomo asked for ryan he asked for it because he was under siege ended bought him some time. The question is now that it's here is to borrow a phrase is time up it is and i'll tell you your question about how affect his reelection is moot. There won't be a re-election you think he won't even run give. I think he'll be impeached rather

"With you guys giant show ahead so we've got heroes and villains. I mean Probably more so than any other day. We've got here nina. Turner and other just democrats for different stories And then unfortunately a lot of democratic villains Including nancy pelosi. Joe mansion krista cinema. Jim clyburn. There's a lot to fight back against and touch republicans as well but the big interface. Party fight between democrats is gigantic today and and the main topic of conversation. This this details on the stories are amazing. Stay tuned for each and every one of them are cassie. Let's get started all right. Well let's talk about the congressional race for ohio's eleventh district shantelle brown the corporate democrat who's running against progressive candidate nina turner for ohio's congressional seat in the eleventh district is facing ethics investigation. Potentially over her handling of government contracts when she was part of the county council in ohio. Now she's currently part of the same council while simultaneously serving as the head of the cuyahoga county democratic party and Recently the intercept reported on some of the you know sweetheart deals that took place That her donors and also a romantic partner of hers Got to take advantage of so here. The details on that ten weeks later one of the firms owners well. This is in february. Twentieth of twenty seventeen brown had deemed. Ricky said that she would recuse herself from any decisions regarding government grants to people that she knew now. Ten weeks later one of the firms owners helped organize a fundraiser. That bankrolled a significant portion of a reelection campaign making an in kind donation of two thousand dollars at a fundraiser. For brown that netted her over seven thousand dollars a significant sum in a low budget world of cleveland area council races. So that's what happened after she had already approved some funding to a general contractor called perk and perk was actually associated with her her a romantic partner. A man named mark perkins so. She makes that decision immediately. After that about ten weeks later she offers another seven. Thousand dollar. grant You know to the organization that had given her two thousand dollars in fundraising money. and total brown has approved more than seventeen million dollars to perk and has received thirteen thousand dollars in campaign donations from the perkins family and perks. Current owners the family and so these are illegal. They're very clear. Laws preventing this type of dealing from happening one more graphic for you because it gives you a sense of what she was. Engaged in which again goes against The state laws besides the seven million dollar contract in two thousand seventeen brown also voted on three other occasions to approve cuyahoga city contracts for perk totally an additional ten million dollars between two thousand fifteen and twenty nineteen and an august of two thousand twenty. She voted in favor of contracts of one point. Eight seven five million to two firms one headed by mark perkins's sister remember mark perkins Is associated that's a romantic partner associated with perc So this is mark. Perkins's sister and a second who's former vice president is another family member of perkins perk and mc tech a company owned by mark perkins are frequent and longtime business associates. So tell you all that. Because clearly she's offering or approving government contracts to her love interest She's doing favors very clear. Favors in the form of government grants to The individuals who have funded her campaigns. And so that kind of dealing is is unacceptable according to state law. Which i'll read to you in just a minute okay. So there's two levels of corruption here by the way we don't care about her personal care this she's giving contracts someone who's our partner and so the one see corruption is obvious here one hundred. Ub tens of millions of dollars in contracts with my official position And you know their partners. That's number one and number two. I'll get money from your campaign contributions from that business. I mean getting the campaign. contributions is corruption one. Oh one in. America i know a lot of the media has gotten used to well. Of course corporations give money and then the politicians serve them and not the. That's normal they don't even report on an intercept doing a fantastic job of actually pointing out something. That's illegal in this case. And now apparently they're following up in cleveland to see she did in fact break the law and there should be consequences. Meanwhile by the corporate democrats thin almost the entire democratic establishment seeing this huge corruption scandal. Go way to go with. And they're pouring more money into her campaign not less if a progressive had the slightest little bit of controversy. All you gotta get you gotta get out other. Endorse cetera right. There's a massive ethics controversy but for corporate democrats which is almost all democratic leadership. That's not the bug that's a feature but the second level of the corruption is remember. A brown is the head of the democratic party in this county. And everybody knows if you're going to run for office you have to step down from me. And they had a democratic party. Because obviously you can't run the party in a neutral way when you're in a race within the party like i want to know i'm just gonna run the democratic party completely corruptly and to my own benefit and that by the way that's why a lot of locals endorsed nina turner. Because they're like no well. That's obviously not right. I don't care who comes in from washington and tells me that corruption is awesome. I know that if you're had a democratic party in your primary you have to step down you can't rig the entire party in your own favor and a primary race that's insane. Well wait till they get a load of this ethics probe and a lot of them have and a lot of the The endorsers have now switched to nina. Turn right so the daily poster Reviewed emails showing that the ohio state auditor has reviewed the allegations and they have referred the matter to the state ethics commission. And just so you know. The details of what. The state laws in ohio indicate under ohio law. Public officials are prohibited from knowingly authorizing or using their authority or influence to secure authorization of any public contract in which the public official a member of the public officials family or any of the public officials. Business associates has an interest violation of the statute is actually a felony and penalties can include prison. Time now do i. She's actually going to serve prison time. No but this is something you know after they do investigation investigation and they further confirm The intercepts reporting on this yes. She broke the law. And it is a felony in that state. And you're right jank if anything even remotely controversial happens like for progressives. If nina turner had allegedly done something controversial you have no doubt that democrats would focus on that. They would have like laser beams like focused on that. But here's the thing since. Tina doesn't have any controversies attached to her. They're just manufacturing. Controversies in fact Jim clyburn representative jim. Clyburn apparently became incredibly upset over a town hall that featured The young turks jank. Was there killer. Mike and nina turner. It was a town hall. Ford nina turner and clyburn was going to endorse her anyway. But shantelle browns team found this snippet from the townhall sent it to clyburn and he got very upset about it allegedly. So let's take a quick look at that what i realize as we were in south carolina and sixtee- and i saw the dmc. Dnc tried to sabotage strongest candidate. What i realized when i saw people like clyborn which i don't have a problem with south carolina for the good work. He's done..

"We all saw what happened in twenty twenty with these congressional races the democrats who lost their re election bids were not progressives okay. They weren't leftists. They were the milk. Toast incredibly boring. Refused to stir the pot corporate democrats. Who thought that it would be a smart strategy. Somehow to position themselves as weaker republicans in their races. And guess what they lost they lost. Because if you're a boater in that district and you get to choose between a an actual republican and a watered-down republican. Just go for the republican. Just go for the republican right. I mean and i remember the media propaganda leading up to these congressional races. All of the fearmongering regarding. Oh looks like anc might not win. All looks like ilhan. Omar might not win. Looks like to might not win. They won by massive margins massive massive margins. So don't come to me and tell me that oh you know. It's progressive messaging. That doesn't really sit well with voters. No that's not what what actually played out during the twenty twenty election and anyone who tries to say otherwise is just a liar who refuses to accept reality but i think importantly is intentionally gas lighting people. Because in order to be honest they'd have to accept reality and reality doesn't sit well with their corporate donors. that's what this is really about totally they. They want people to go back to branch so bad. They want middle of the road. Candidates to sort of appease you know high rolling democrats comfortable democrats democrats who really don't need healthcare because they've got it all you know in the bank whatever they want to appease that base of donors and have them all go home and just sorta bury your head in the sand you know whereas like especially now man you listing off all the things that nina turner is for now. We're in a night and day moment when it comes to the health of our economy and the health literal health of our people after this pandemic and during this pandemic what kind of policies do you think are going to Support the american people going forward. Are they going to be trickle down. Economic policies are they going to be a means tested policies or is it probably a safer bet. Is there if we support the social safety net going forward and so that you know people can go see a doctor without being stuck with a hundred thousand dollar. Bill like where. What are we really talking about here. So but dams wants to all go night night hog take a little nap and let them just keep on doing their dark money wheelings and dealings and never get called out on anything. Look i mean just a few more I know running out of time. But just a few more parts of this article that i think are relevant because Look at new york times washington post typically when they cover these types of races get salty jenkins salty because they frame things in a way. That's unfair to the left. However in this case there were excerpts that i was actually very fond of including this one brown shantelle brown has the most reliable voters many of them older more affluent white Also they write that brown with an easygoing demeanor pushed back hard against the characterization of her as a washington puppet and then followed that with this excerpt. Her campaign is staffed by help from s. k. Decay a powerhouse democratic political firm stocked with old hands from the clinton and obama days. Her endorsements include moderate house. Democrats representative Gossamer many of whom are motivated by turner's favourable statements on palestinian rights Going back to what you were saying a little earlier francesco about how Nina turner standing up for palestinians has also turned off some of these corporate democrats and their donors So that's encouraged them to get involved in this race as well. I mean for once you know. They're not relying on just sort of empty identity politics because needed turner. Herself is a black woman. You know so in a sense. What you're saying is yeah. You want diversity. You just don't want diversity that's actually gonna fight cool. They just want to make sure that. That's what moderate democrats are saying. They want diversity they can handle and that any look it speaks the congressional black caucus which a lot of black progressives in congress and out have understood that they have long Being being irrelevant that they have not had the fire that they had when they initially were formed and a lot of people across the country disappointed in their black leadership and say no. We actually have black leadership. We need more of you know. We need more corey. Bushes an ion presley's those are the people that we want to empower jamal bowman etc right like we got that but you all who have like had you know. The their grasp on leadership and power need to step aside. Yes absolutely all right. Well let's take a break when we come back. Though ben shapiro had a conversation with neil degrasse tyson about transgender rights. You don't wanna miss this story. We're gonna share that and more when we return all right. Welcome back to it. Everyone anna cast burian. And francesca fear. teeny francesca. you're the host of the asian room Airs every sunday Tell the audience a little more about it. Yeah live sunday. Love it love it. It's a great show. It's entertaining and informative. Everyone check it out one other. That is entertaining. Sometimes but not. Very informative is ben shapiro's and we talk about a time to time But very rarely does he have someone on who dunks on him. So that's why we're going to talk about today This is wonderful. So ben shapiro. Had a conversation with neil degrasse tyson about science because you know conservatives care so deeply about science this time. The topic was specifically about transgender rights. he refers to it as transgenderism. And i'm guessing. He was hoping that. Neil degrasse tyson would go along with whatever narrative he was trying to push and we know that shapiro has not been so kind to the transgender community. So you can imagine what kind of trying to push. But what i appreciated was how neil degrasse. Tyson responded to shapiro statement in this video. Take a look. Argument.

"I'll give you those details in just a second but the new york times just covered this race and i wanted to share their framing on it but also some of the information that we know regarding who's supporting what and where everyone stands on this particular race. I an interesting excerpt from the new york times piece democrats. There's no specificity here. just democrats democrats say. There is little broader significance to this individual house primary contest. One that pits to black women against each other in a safe democratic district that had been represented by marcia fudge before she was confirmed as president biden secretary of housing and urban development by the way position that fudge before being named for that position thought she didn't want because typically it just goes to Someone who's black when reality she wanted to be in charge of the agriculture department. Anyway i wanted to give you guys that context. I think it's important but with that. Said what are your thoughts. On that. First excerpt that i read. So why are we talking about it. I mean this is. What's amazing right. You're like lights largely non important in the grand democratic strategy but we gotta stick it to the progressives and keep them in their place literally all they're just admitting that it's not strategic and yet hundreds of thousands of dollars from from like democrats. I mean is the d triple c involved at this point And actually pro israeli forces the united states have been just funneling money into nina turner's opponent. So that's all you need to know right. There is that actually they want other democrats to lose. Meanwhile progressives are always being told. Oh you hate unity. Why do you eight unity honey. Nina turner was leading by double digits. Up until you funneled all that money our opponent so we were fine with you before that. Think you're against unity anyway. Yeah no that's exactly right. So you know nina turner and her campaign had done a poll just to see where everyone stood. In this race and she was leading i mean chantal brown was so far behind and that was when hillary clinton got involved in did her endorsement. At first i was like who cares. I mean hillary clinton is not a popular figure so if. I were nina turner. I'd be elated about this. Jake made an important point. And i think he was right. That was hillary clinton essentially doing like a allowed call to corporate democrats and their you know their funders to get involved in this race and show their support for shantelle brown. And that's exactly what happened. So that excerpt. I read you from the new york. Times was immediately followed with this it in the final weeks of the campaign. The party establishment is throwing copious. This is correct. Copious amounts of time and money into an effort to stop miss turner a fiery former cleveland councilwoman and ohio state senator. And let's be clear on the differences between a turner and sean brown nina turner fights for everything that we experienced during the bernie sanders campaign. Not just in two thousand sixteen but also in two thousand twenty medicare for all a living wage free college. You know all of the bread and butter issues that progressives find incredibly important i think the majority of americans find incredibly important to be honest Shantelle brown though even in this article in the context of this Legacy outlet has Made it clear like she's just this laid back you know won't go against the grain candidate. The congressional black caucus political action committee though has endorsed chantal brown. That's turner's main rival The cuyahoga county democratic party chairwoman so of hillary clinton and the highest ranking black highest ranking black member of the house. Jim clyburn who will be campaigning. This weekend for brown they argue. That brown is the better candidate with a unifying message. Reference that Franchesca beta little earlier but to be fair. Nina turner also has backing representative andrea cossio. Cortez of new york. We'll be knocking on doors for the first or four her the same weekend representative clyburn will be in town bernie. Sanders will join the fray in person the last weekend before the election and I should also note that. The working families party is Forming a pack in order to provide some funding for nina turner's campaign. They're going to give at least one hundred fifty thousand dollars up to two hundred thousand dollars. We'll see what the end result is but the money is one thing i think the the support is incredibly important. Getting people motivated and excited is incredibly important and Yet i mean nina turner. Winning is very important okay. I don't think that electoral politics or the end all be all in fact i cringe anytime. Anyone tries to say that electoral politics or the mo- like it's the most important thing nothing else matters. No grassroots organizing matters pressure from outside Matters right like there needs to be this outside inside a strategy. We need more labor unions. We need to empower labour. That's a huge part of the equation. Something that you talk about quite a bit Franchesca and and you know if you care to elaborate on it. I'd love to hear it. Well yeah. I think you're you're totally right about inside out strategy and what this shows. Is that the democratic party is deathly afraid of the outside strategy. They are terrified of the grassroots right. Where is the republican party. Love their grassroots. Oyo you've got extremist views. Love it now. Democrats don't have extremist views. Right like democrats are like you know. Hey we want healthcare. Hey we want a green new deal you know. You see the amazon's burning stop that as soon as possible. Thanks hey i wanna live. I wanna family and maybe grandchildren anyway like. That's that is that is seen as extreme. And i will also say this clyburn man couldn't involve once again clyburn. Aw thank you mr middle of the road and unlike and here. Here's what we the lesson of. Two thousand twenty is very interesting curious. What you think but i feel like this. This says to us that democrats are taking away from twenty twenty that once again the way to go is middle of the road is keep it safe is don't cause too many waves. Republicans think that joe biden is a communist. Think he is a social. It doesn't matter then if you put up an actual democratic socialist. You're still going to get the same critiques. And i would argue that. Like look i think getting headlines as good of meat. Turner is in congress. She'll get headlines and that will benefit the movements for all of the things that we're talking about in the we want to win. It's just that they're so afraid. And and i don't know i think the last my last point is one thing that keeps on getting trotted out. All you hear it all the time on mainstream media de fund. The police really hurt democrats de fund. The police really heard black lives matter really hurting the debt. Really because actually if you look at the studies there was more voter energy Because of the black lives matter movement in twenty. Twenty because of everything. that's that popped off after. George floyd was murdered that galvanized people to the polls rights. I wanna say biden was your choice. I say that that movement energy that outside energy also propelled you into victory. So don't turn your nose a turn your back on that roots. No the corporate wing of the democratic party doesn't get called out enough regarding the gas lighting that they engage in on a regular basis..

"Let's just go straight benja bent on this four food groups. Okay so In democrats sucking we have A story about nina turner. Friend of the show as people are aware. She's running for congress to replace marcia fudge marcia fudge by the way just to remind her. She is that black former member of congress from ohio. She said that she was tired. Of black people just being considered for department of labor and hud and joe biden delivered and named her to hud so he is now at hood because joe biden likes. That's gonna that's gonna miss the On both reports actually yeah. It's true she would double double on. I'm gonna blame him more than her. Because i think it's hard to turn down a cabinet position. Yes i guess so. Yeah but it'd be great for it to be principled when she would have gone into the private sector and mid fifty times the money. Yeah yeah know. Yeah so Nina sorry if you don't take the cabinet job then you're not gonna later get the bigger private. Yeah that's how the revolving door work right. So that's a tough one. Yeah so anita turner who was a state senator of ohio also people probably know the bernie sanders surrogate and then bernie sanders campaign chair coach campaign chair for president. She's running on a platform of medicare for all of them living wage housing to human ray and she has polling at fifty percent in the thirteenth candidate. It primary for ohio's eleventh district. Dave throat and julia rock have a great article. Dem's launch proxy war on medicare for all dem's bankrolled by big pharma. Suddenly targeting nina turner. Right after she aired and ad touting medicare for all obviously she's a threat to the status quo because she supports those good things and this means that what what has to happen because of that obviously has majority whip james clyburn who is by the way among the top recipients of pharmaceutical industry. Pack money in both the house and senate. Okay that's a pretty big deal right. He's a member of the house. He's a congressman but he's the biggest recipient of all of them. I was gonna say like is. He somehow both in the senate as well so he. He joined Luminaries like hillary clinton in supporting candidate shantelle brown and he told the new york times. What i try to do is demonstrate by precept and example how we are to proceed as a party now clyburn also of course famously intervened for He decided he decided the presidency. Basically right so. I want you know. Sometimes we do the useful idiots bump where we claim credit for something. We have a couple of those this week. But but i think that one of them this week that we can claim that Clyburn did not endorse nina turner. Because that would have been a terrible stand on her campaign to have such a corporate shell. You're trying to reverse mind. Forget what it's like. It's like when alan dershowitz like endorsed. Tom perez and threatened to lose the democratic party. If if keith ellison became the dnc chair like that is the best endorsement of brewing. Don't don't their bureau patch kind of a threat exactly. Yeah so but i thought you know we are about democrats suck and sadly the new york times is what would you. How would you describe the relationship between the new york times and democrats inseparable uncle. Yeah i don't. I don't even different institution actually so i thought it'd be worth reading the the article that the new york times put out on this story because it's one of those things where it's kind of. It's not just the story. It's not just that clyburn comes out of the woodwork to endorse nina turner's opponent. It's also the way it's presented by the media number three house. Democrats steps into ohio race to head off a sanders accolate. Which i think is an interesting way of putting it. This decision by represent james clyburn to oppose an outspoken ally. Senator bernie sanders in a special election. In cleveland highlights generational and ideological gulf in the democratic party. Now in a way that's honest right because he's framing it as a sanders related battle. And i think that for so many people this is about sanders. It's also about much like the sanders thing. It's about like progressive issues I think it's a little bit weird. I don't know what do you think accolate. I think it's a weird thing to describe her. As i'm not sure if i would love were her but it's like an accurate description are it. Depends i mean you're you're you're you're short handing it for an audience. That's not a cleveland audience. So it's technically right on south. I don't know it's a little weird. That's a lower right. I mean accolate. What is it. it's a person assisting in the celebration up assisting the celebration and a religious service or procession mean it sounds like like no. it's not upon. i don't know there's something weird. I think and judgmental about it like well especially because the new york times hates bernie sanders so much so right well again. They're framing this for their audience. Which alright yeah. The kids bernie sanders. So they're they're that's what they're trying to play this up because they want people to click on the story. Yeah it's right. So but here's what i like about this story. And it was written by john weiss jonathan weissman who's also a novelist. Apparently kind of novels i jon. Weisman is a congressional correspondent. Veteran washington journalists and author of the novel num- number four imperial lane and the nonfiction book. Semitism with three parentheses around. Semitism that were being jewish. In america in the age of trump his career in journalism stretches back thirty years of to check it out. Yeah we should have him on somebody. how many how. Many journalists have successfully made the jump Actually become good. I mean there's plenty. Actually michael connelly you. Detective novels in their lawyers who become novelist right. That's a different one. Some russians of combat goes course. Matt why does your head go there. Sorry want people start to come back to that subject anyway. go ahead anyway. So here's i mean. Basically the split between turner and her opponent chantal brown is between the two wings of the democratic party. So you see this in the endorsements also so the Janina turner was endorsed by ao. See i on the presley. Ilan omar rashid leib and then on the other hand shantelle was endorsed by clyburn. Hillary clinton richard cordray representatives joyce beatty of ohio and the chairwoman of the congressional black caucus and moderate democrats. Moderate democrats like representative josh. God heimer of new jersey and david tron of maryland one second. Let's just pause there. Josh scott heimer not moderate. He's like trump democrat. He's he's totally right wing. He's not moderate. He's bad on everything like he's trumpy on everything from the border to you know Solve he's obviously really bad on that. Actually that would make him. Non trumpy right. You know him you've written about him through in your that's right that's right. Oh forget it was. Because i was writing about the the fraternity. That didn't yeah exactly. Yeah yes right no. He's it's the other way was not trumpy. Now he's trumpy except on the salting. Yes right so ignore that part because and that is like an exception because even trump is an exception on that right like trump happens to be on the right side of that for the wrong reasons mean he was just doing it to mess with the democrats. Respect the work but yeah that hassle. Yeah now he's awful like he he i'll have.
