"Selena, you wrote a wonderful moving remembrance of shanksville. And the passengers that fought back into the hijacking on 9 11. It was really a marvelous column. First thing I posted, maybe one of the few things I posted about 9 11 because there's a lot of imagery, but I like people to read about it. How is the reaction to that? Why the New York 9/11 Attack Hits AJ Differently to the Other Two
"Here I am and today is 9 11 and it's not easy. When this day rolls up on me, I never feel like doing much of anything to be honest. I usually wake up, I admit, I wake up too early on this day, probably three or 4 o'clock in the morning, my head just knows, and there's no getting back to sleep after that. I just, no matter how I try, I'm up. And the second I glance at the news shows, it's all about what happened on that horrible day in New York City. I know atrocities happened in D.C. and shanksville, Pennsylvania, but I gotta be really honest. I really don't think about those other two places. I guess I'm a snob. I got sympathy for those people and their families don't get me wrong. But it's just that the towers coming down seem like it took all morning to unfold. Even though it wasn't that long in between the first and the second tower, getting attacked. But The Pentagon got hit so fast and so hard and I tell you the truth, I got a hard time even seeing the plane hitting the building. I'm not saying it didn't hit it. I just can't see it clearly enough to really feel the full impact. And as for shanksville, Pennsylvania, I like the story of a bunch of guys saying, let's roll. You know, it's beautiful. I'm a writer. I get it, but that's certainly the way I'd react if I were ever on a hijacked plane, but I don't know. There's a lot to the tragedy that I don't buy with shanksville, okay? I just don't believe a plane could go down in the field and we'd see small parts of it like a wheel 5 miles away.

Many were stricken with debilitating illness, including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or COPD. It was very, very bad. It was like a sandstorm. I've been in sandstorms. It was like that you couldn't see three or four ft. In front of you. It's a two weeks. And then I was every night for three months. After the twin towers went down. That area was a disastrous area, and it wasn't enough. Uh, for the people they were living or working there, and I was there every day. Your quality wasn't When it should have been. We all knew it. In spite of what we were told, we went in anyway, I think the environmental Department of Environmental Protection came out and said to the air is fine. It's healthy to breathe. Don't worry about the air. They told us the I was clean. That it was okay. They so everything will be all right, you know, and everything wasn't all right. We all knew the site was contaminated, No matter what. What Government agency said it wasn't it was safe. That was not true. We all knew it all. The first responders knew it. And all of us just knew that we weren't safe, but, uh, you know, we did our job. It took a few years. I started to notice that I couldn't um, go as long Like, say, walking or running because I love sports. And, uh, I should. I noticed that my breathing was slowing down. Then I was fooling myself because I think there was nothing wrong and I just take some time off from work. A year later. Two years later, I started to realize that it's not going away. It's not getting any better. When the doctor told me your COPD as what's that I had no clue what it was and to explain it to me. I can't even wash my own cars Now. I used to wash my own car. I used to rake my own leaves. Keep my house nice and neat. I can't do any of that. Now, if it's under 20 degrees out, I can't go out to like my house because it feels like I'm inhaling broken glass. I can't. I can't play sports no more. Seeing people in and around, bypassed by See him on the field from the football around. Run. Uh, One day. I'm hoping to have grandchildren. I want to be able to do that with them. But who knows what it holds? There's more information about those suffering from this disease at COPD. S O s dot org. They're responding to the gop base that is strikingly on the side of the the freedom not to be vaccinated the freedom to work in a place where your boss can't tell you what to do and it is that question. In fact, he owned land there passed down from his grandfather to his father to him, but he didn't have time to think about it. He spent all day chasing local angles. It was past one in the morning when Tim finally made it home. He saw that his answering machine was blinking. It was his dad and I got a message from him on my voice mail. That's a give me a call. Tim's dad said he had been watching the news All day about the crash near Shanksville. He'd studied the video of the smoldering crater and the burnt line of trees over and over. And then he said, this I think those trees are ours. Tim wasn't convinced. But three weeks later, the phone rang. It was the Somerset County coroner. And I'm actually going to have Tim tell you in the next part of this story, because, as a journalist, he was facing a pretty unique situation. So Yeah, I was relatively new to W I t F And when the corner Wally Miller called, he confirmed to put my dad already knew. Our land was part of the crash site, and it was considered a crime scene. In the interest of disclosure. I told him I was a reporter. His reply still makes me shake my head. What are you going to do? Report on yourself? Firefighters lost their lives that day. 23 police officers, 37 Port Authority officers lost their lives. Over 6000 people were injured. And that's not even close to counting the thousands upon thousands of deaths that have been linked to health problems and deaths caused by toxic dust at ground zero. More than 80 nationalities lost at least one life that day. British lost the second highest number of people. 20 were pulled out of the World Trade Center rubble alive. The last survivor was trapped for 27 hours before she was rescued. In the first two days after 9 11 more than 1.5 million units of blood were donated nationwide. And that's September alone, People donated $657 million to help victims families. By the end of 2000 and 1/2 billion had been donated around 60% of Americans gave money donated blood.
