K. chance the hating this is a ground breaking in it initiative which will deepen global connectivity when we sold that ability to beat for the London Stock Exchange that what commentators that sign saying look actually it's it's things like stop connect that should be uniting these at trading platforms rather than outright emanated do we conclude the stock connect is sort of AZ failing it's it well from this and looks of it yes it's failing with only one company and we there were rumors that HSBC would be listing in Shanghai and in fact I I think HSBC talked about it a couple of years ago but you know all these months later and there are no signs of HSBC going public in Shanghai and if anything it's sort of in the bad books of the moment of Beijing because it was a it provided information that led to the arrests of the CFO of quality so I think yeah it's it's an easy link to halt when there's only one company has yeah yes was the initial given for for getting involved with this if you're at a London listed business you might want to topping said liquid is he available in Chinese market so investor appetite folk for Weston stocks in Chinese market sit to that to that invest a pool that eight maybe it's just maybe those details behind the way that these functions because there are all the connect systems that seem to have more success right now and then the other connect system that has more success is the Hong Kong Shanghai snow connect and Hong Kong Shenzhen connect with the difference between those connects and what's happening London is those connects allowing mainland investor to trade Hong Kong stocks in Hong Kong investor to trade mainland stocks are Chinese stocks but in this connect there was no cross border trading happening all all that happened was a Chinese company went to London got listed and the idea was that British investors to trade in it and then it there was nothing on the other way okay yes very much thanks we'll souls simply beginning column is the sugar land you can read more on this and other stories from bring back opinion been back dot com.

"Around the globe but this is a great call this is Bloomberg daybreak Europe thirty AM in London thank you for listening in Paris Frank football Brussels good morning everyone and happy new year and they were taking a very happy new year I yeah I am rushing hearing a listening to Bloomberg daybreak here at thirty minutes into the equity market open here in Europe we're continuing to see upside momentum in European stocks the stock six hundred high by always seven tenths of a percent now across regional benchmarks let's see one hundred high by eight tenths of percent the CAC forty high by the same the docks was flat at the open but that's now in positive territory up almost three tenths of a percent of the ibex at foot see may both up around eight tenths of a percent of course we did see quite a banner year for global stocks in general in fact twenty nineteen was the best year for global stock since two thousand and nine it looks like we could see some green on the screen the US session as well as some P. five hundred even he's up four tenths of a percent Dow futures up four tenths of percent nasdaq futures high by five tenths of percent although Japanese equity markets were closed in the Asian session today and they all close for the rest of the week we saw the CSI three hundred and Chinese stocks have their best start to the year since twenty fifteen some of that might have been to do with the triple all cut from the PBUC although the U. N. was underwhelmed or at least perhaps it was priced at given we did get that signal all such a blur cuts to come at the very end all the lost here taking a look at the ten year treasury yield to castrate has gotten go in Europe it didn't happen of course in the Asian session with Japan close ten year yield up two basis points one ninety four handle ten year bund yield up two basis points negative sixteen taking a look at the ten you Gil ill that moves high by five basis points are now where trading on an eighty eight handle on that so really seeing risk on sort of a cross assets really in terms of the picture for currencies though the respond did sort of suggest a was perhaps why we were seeing four days of dollar weakness towards the end of last year but we recover a little bit on the Bloomberg dollar index right now we'll meanwhile this is less to do with respond more to do with geopolitical risk higher after the best you since twenty sixteen WTI at five tenths of percent sixty one thirty seven percent to sixty six forty four up seven tenths of a percent what Jeff what level of some of today's top stories now as we head China central banks taking steps will make credit cheaper the people's bank of China has trim the amount of cash that lenders must hold in reserve its signal continued action twenty twenty to reduce borrowing costs for companies China's into bank repo rate fell the most in at least five years and on to some breaking news this morning China has temporarily blocked planned listings between the Shanghai and London stock exchanges that's according to a Reuters report citing five unnamed sources who were involved in talks with Chinese officials which is said that politics including Britain starts on a Hong Kong protest was behind the suspension of the Shanghai London Stock connect plan meanwhile the story everyone's been talking about it seems that when you call us grown he's getting ready to tell his side of the story the former head of Nisan and run those plans to hold a press conference on January eighth in Beirut reporting from Lebanon Bloomberg's Donna Craig says authorities there are indicating go he's out to take his crutches have come out with statements that say that he did and her illegitimate way he's and there were no measures that want any action against him since he is not subject to any legal prosecution in Lebanon the former head of Nisan had faced charges of financial misconduct in Japan go denies the allegations and may seek to put Japan's legal system on trial instead and David on homes greenlight capital rebounded from its worst year ever posting nearly fourteen percent return in twenty nineteen that's according to a client update seen by playing back the performance was helped by almost sixty percent gain in home builder green break its largest disclosed US stock position as of the end of September it was probably dragged down by short wages on Tesla and Netflix no it's a new year and the bomb for twenty twenty east challenging for European stocks trade on brexit fears are yielding to clarity and equities have reverse from multi and that with many markets now at multi year highs but to sustain the momentum and valuation big intelligence as negative earnings revisions needs to reversal for more I'm joined by ten Craig had seen a European strategist of Bloomberg intelligence that Tim can twenty twenty repeats will also help pretty strong twenty nine three four listen amazing two thousand nineteen and in a word no we don't think that two thousand twenty can repeat it but that sounds probably too harsh we we are optimistic in terms of where the markets can go but on a measured pragmatic pace I understood points that I would Matt and I'd I'd make the first is that two thousand nineteen was all about revaluation up now Europe is still cheap and a lot of different ways but it's a lot higher than it was at the beginning of two thousand and nineteen that helped offset what was the back half of two thousand nineteen so just constant nonstop negative earnings revision that's what's critical going forward the other thing I'd just highlight is yeah the numbers for two thousand nineteen were exceptional but you gotta remember where we started from we started in a big ditch the fourth quarter of two thousand eighteen was a disaster instead of being at twenty two twenty three percent a if you went back to September thirtieth more only at six percent as far as the euro stoxx go yeah that's a good context that in terms of the negative earnings revisions and the prospect of those reversing tame what is the prospect of that because you could argue that the stellar performance that we've had in European equities to some extent is front running better earnings at least in the first quarter of twenty twenty there's no doubt in if that doesn't come through the markets will stall if not reverse I think there are a couple of key things to look at how the one is interest rates you think about what you hi what you highlighted this morning that rates are taking up that's a good thing is far as earnings go given how big the financial sector is in Europe in particular in the U. K. and what do you look at overall interest rates like the guilt or you look at say the ten year to year spread that's a good thing it's been under pressure through two thousand nineteen it started to reverse late last year and if that continues that's a big deal for Europe and the other is energy we we you know it's a big sector in Europe especially in the UK and the same thing is happening we've seen a little bit of an up tick and well prices if that continues that's a good thing that's it you mentioned earlier about Europe being pretty cheap as cheap as it might have been but but still cheap into the valuations is it really is cheap as it seems and we've got some good things coming through breaks it does seem inverted commas to be sorted who knows another things going on is this true Pacific well thirteen and change times for the fourteen fourteen and a half times for phone forward earnings for Europe broadly eighteen point five for the U. S. so we're talking a forty percent discount in the in the U. K. it's a big discount but three things there's some really big sectors that are just simply always cheap like financials in energy second thing is there some really expensive sectors like tack in internet that are just minuscule here versus huge in the U. S. and then last but not least there's a sector composition thing with in important sector so you think communications services here yeah telecom in the US you've got internet consumer discretionary here you've got all those yeah there you've got you commerce so there's there's structural issues that will keep Europe cheap relative to the U. S. interesting thank you so much Tim Craighead senior European strategist hopping back intelligence great to have you with us kicking off at the first trading day off twenty twenty with a look ahead at European equity markets now let's get the global news with younger insomnia good morning the rest will come easily to her school too shocking action against the US Kim Jong hoon declared he was no longer bound by is to hope may two missile test I would soon debut in new strategic weapon that adds to president.

"And Roger it's a new year Freeman it seems the call is going I mean it's crazy how this is blown up on social media on Twitter all kinds of trending hash tags like a go go go on go on with the wind at all kinds of theories abounded about how he actually going away it's raised more questions and answers but so many different theories the when the recall my attention was a him escaping in a music box with a bunch of performers for Christmas the way it was it was a cello books now I mean he's not tall man has to be said I think more likely a double bass you know I mean you know is expecting a cubic tie box agenda instrument box it gets even more ridiculous I'm in terms of what happens now though I mean he's expected to make a statement is next week other than that also a lot of theories that this has been planned for quite awhile with a private investigator all kinds of theories and doing the rounds of having friends in Beirut suggesting with was one Microsoft Imad fear is it was Lebanese intelligence and Japanese intelligence between them arranged to we need some kind of embarrassment but I think the embarrassment is huge again was whatever happens one thing I think is certain bay which is a great party city and I imagine that colors goes celebrations over the beginning of the new year will probably well they would not yours and mine into a cocked hat that's just a fear yeah although existing he is well there's a story on the Bloomberg sort of hinting at the fact we did sort of think he'd be very welcomed in bay ridge but actually that's a little bit of a change in kind of sentiment in terms of sort of a big public figures and things that might suggest perhaps he won't be quite as welcome with the general public because we might previously thought well everything is very very political in Lebanon that me ten you and there are many many groups and factions and I'm sure that his arrival will be processed into the many already existing divisions that that's all they unfortunately bit that is a story that will run and run and run absolutely I would wait to start the new year I was talking to you here in the green when it comes to equity markets three minutes into the equity market opening Europe the stock six hundred on the front foot up four tenths of a percent of course this is off to really quite a banner year for global equity markets in general in twenty nineteen looking at Asia to Japan markets closed today and for the rest of the week but we did see with Chinese stocks trading you two year highs and thought the best start to a year for Chinese equity since twenty fifteen perhaps the triple law a cut from the PVC have something to do with that but actually didn't move the U. Wendell some say he was priced in because we did get signals all of this coming towards the very end of last year anyway so it was expected to a certain degree in terms of how regional equity benchmark to shaping up in Europe you are seeing a quite a bit of green on the screen the forty one hundred up five tenths of percent the CAC forty high by six tenths of a percent of XInput C. made firmly in the green the docks is flat S. and P. futures if we take a look to the US open posted territory as a B. futures Dow futures up by four tenths of percent nasdaq futures slightly higher than that by five tenths of a percent we have no cash treasuries trading of course in the Asian session with Japan close but now the ten year yield on the treasury is heading higher up a basis point one ninety three handle and yields moving higher in Europe as well so you're seeing a clear picture of risk going across assets today to kick off the new year the ten year bund yield is up almost two basis points a negative seventeen is where we are ten you get yield up four basis points is that market gets going on an eighty seven handle after four days old dollar weakness to ends the year we're actually seeing the dollar slightly firmer today it's giving up some of the gains but generally edging into positive territory in terms of the Bloomberg dollar index and oil as we know how to put in twenty nineteen best you since twenty sixteen and we Stafa old some a geopolitical tensions now in January WTI crude five tenths of said sixty one thirty four Brent at sixty six thirty six up six tenths of a percent Raja well speaking of oil it's the top on a list of what this looks out to watch this morning Bloomberg's Lisa from has done is an island a few Tullow oil that he found about four meters net oil pay in the in the garage one well so some good music it does sound like good needs to begin with but is actually below the company's preacher for cost and say Morgan Stanley analysts have said says result alone white lead to any commercial development it's important to keep in mind that last month in December the chief executive excel the chief executive officer and exploration he had both departed the company cut its production outlook as well the short interest a spot since then so it's been a rough the bad news for this company and so at first glance it does look like it's good news but it it's probably not enough for now yeah I guess there new year's in policy press wasn't as good as it might have been expected earlier meanwhile tobacco still connect the FDA is gonna baton Ole E. cigarette holder flavors except tobacco and menthol yes this is something the Dow Jones had reported on new he is even so it's just coming in and that we might see a bit of a reaction today and it's in the band will apply only to both punk base vaporizes such as those made by jewel and Reynolds American six British American tobacco have bought Reynolds in July two thousand and seventeen and they open the E. cigarette brands of cold in five so at the moment beat British Americans because she has a little change we might see some action they decide Tullow oil has actually opens balance down eight point three percent okay now we all know about the what's been going on in Hong Kong the protests were new price just in fact in the last few days but HSBC if you've been in Hong Kong you've seen the lines probably outside I'm David they've been the subject of a of an attack yeah they have said basically protesters have been vandalizing the two lines which has nine is Stephen in states like that women's honestly even in state but when it say I though it named after some bank manages at HSBC quite a few decades ago and said I saw them being like in guiding the the offices that black protesters they've been kind of like putting like com that being like spraying the eyes would spray paints with red and black and so it is it is quite reaching out to a new level in terms of like the the protests these prices have been going on since June of last year inside and it doesn't seem like it's ending anytime soon Hey just be shares have actually I still trading below the levels that they were at before the protests in June and the reporting and results next month so it would be something to watch for Shaw at the moment he just be she has just positions opposite point one percent have something to keep an eye on the clearly thanks very much indeed Lisa Lisa found that in a London studio let's get to our top stories that and we start with a story breaking in the last couple of hours China has temporarily blocked plans listings between the Shanghai London stock exchanges that's according to a Reuters report citing five unnamed sources who are involved in talks with Chinese officials wishes said that politics including Britain stance on Hong Kong protests with behind the suspension of the Shanghai London Stock connect plan I'm saying with China the PVA season the reserve ratio requirement a triple off the Chinese banks by fifty basis points effective today Bloomberg Selena **** has more from Beijing he says the goal is to help banks reduced their lending rate to business and the bank says this will save more than two billion dollars in funding costs for banks in a year indicating the benchmark loan prime rate will likely be lowered the PBS he also says it's keeping policy flexible and working to make credit cheaper for businesses but at the same time the objection will be offset as banks provide more cash to the public before the spring festival and the B. B. O. C. says the overall liquidity level at banks will be kept stable and prudent monetary policy stance remains unchanged in Beijing I'm Selena weighing and that was seven one of this is a fact that that we we said it wrong it's Monday is when this comes into play yeah exactly in a city that was sort of pointing to there as well you know some of this is to kind of offset or at least to accommodate some of the increased equity tomorrow and that cheering as the spring festival also some that sort of upcoming tax payment seasons in the second half of January that tax payment might drain five hundred to eight hundred billion you wind up from the banking sector so still questions of whether this is really going to provide significant credit supports because again one of the things that be with economics points to is that in in the sort of big picture the still sort of protect the worries of the smaller companies and private companies as well in terms of the credit sector now this move comes against the backdrop old positive data out this morning in China Chinese chi sheen manufacturing PMI state expansion each surgery for the fifth straight month it's a positive signal but as Bloomberg economics points out the headline reading should be taken with a grain of salt as underlying components on both the mount and supply sides continue to weaken yeah believe economics I mean this coupled with what we've heard about the trip law Bloomberg economics really does think of the Chinese military policy stones remains easing bias they think with a deceleration economic growth supports a still needed they continue to expect a twenty to thirty basis point decline in the official one year loan prime rate in twenty twenty and also think the PVC will reduce the interest rate for its medium term lending facilities but let's get back to the story that continues to capture our imagination that Roger and I were talking about at the top of the show Carlos Ghosn's campaign to salvage his legacy is likely to start soon the foreman a centreman is now eleven on off tricked airing escape from Japan he said he was fleeing a re to justice system that is accused him of financial crimes goad has said to communicate freely with the media I look forward to starting next week but also in China that was the new year's eve speech from president xi Ching paying Russia that's right he was serve tool king about twenty twenty being a milestone year for the country's development Arlene join yeah in two thousand nineteen we sweated and toiled as we pressed ahead with concrete efforts were chief mince thanks to our study pursuit of high quality development China's GDP is expected to edge close to one trillion one with the per capita figure reaching the level of ten thousand US dollars and I was present she speaking through a translator cool subject through the trade talks with the US is key to China's economic outlook but there is continued progress on phase one president from saying the US China you'll probably sun on the fifteenth of January and that he traveled to Beijing at some point does your top stories for the latest in global news he's playing backslash entirely on good.

"Be important, but it has certainly increase. Our range of possible future behaviors of Anton stream particular will. And if the worst case scenario that you're talking about comes true. What are the implications of that pretty grim with token about Xs, stencil threat to small island nations like Marshall Islands in the Pacific, another rattles Pacific? They will become a to meet its seal of those, those small island states will become uninhabitable. Which took in about a massive loss of land, you know, an area, the size of Libya, which looking about displacement of up two hundred eighty seven million people potentially. That's that's. Awful lot of people, you know, while going to have to move to somewhere else. Edge just to give people a sense of how many people that has one hundred hundred and eighty seven million people. There were a million people who came to Europe as a result of the Syrian refugee crisis and that overwhelmed, a lot of countries. Absolutely. Right. It's cool. The social discontent sexual people political upheaval throughout Europe. On was what like almost two hundred times smaller number of people, so you kinda get get an idea of how incredibly disrupted something like to me to see level rise with bait. It doesn't sound like a lot, but we're talking you know, I mean places like Florida. Some of the major coastal cities, New York, San Francisco. We genera of Shanghai London. We're not necessarily saying loss of life, but we're saying that, you know, massive. Parts of the infrastructure of these huge cities will become unusable and you know, rather than kind of nuisance flooding that you get. Now you're talking about daily, flooding events, really pretty grim consequences. And yet, you know, when we think about all of the stories that we hear all the studies that come out that say things like what you're saying, maybe not exactly this, but pretty similar. It seems like it comes and goes without any real change with regard to climate change regulation legislation all around the world that saw halt comment from a point for me, Komen home, because I mean, not that really relates to I think response from the from politicians and policymakers certain isn't that what has to happen in order for something real tight to change on this issue? Absolutely right. And I think that, you know, the Paris agreement that was signed in twenty fifty. I think was a landmark agreement almost two hundred night nations signed up to that, that the trouble is the, the minute seems that it was largely kinda rhetoric raw than reelection. So even since twenty fifteen we've seen an increase in greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere. So things aren't going in the right direction. But having said that, you know, I do sense that there is a change in mood. I mean, not just a amongst the public, but amongst politicians as well. So the UK government of declared it a climate emergency. So I think there is a sea change taking place whether we act quickly enough to of some of the worst comes coins clump, change remains to be seen, but it is inactive to do that. We can't do it. It's not an insurmountable challenge that Jonathan Bamber, who's a professor of geography at the university of Bristol ISA lead, author of a new study that says the world's seas arising faster than previously thought professor, thank you for joining us.
