Are We Edging Toward a New Drug War?
"Had a piece this week. And this is what sparked my interest because they said, could we actually start to see real wars around these drugs? And they were referencing the drugs coming in from Mexico. And whether or not we talk about the war on drugs, whether it might actually lead to a real war, which brought me to that whole opium crisis back in the 18 60s, the two opium wars, in some ways, it's like this weird progression of history where we're kind of back where we started, but now the U.S. is on the receiving end of getting all this bad stuff into the country, which the Chinese, according to the DEA, have a hand in by supplying Mexico with these poisonous drugs with these drugs that are killing so many Americans. And so like the Qing dynasty in Beijing in the 1800s, Washington can't stop it. I should at least point out that at least the Shang dynasty actually tried to. I'm not convinced the Biden administration really has any interest this week we're getting a little bit more lip service out of both sides. China reports 2 new COVID deaths as some restrictions eased
"Two new COVID-19 deaths are reported in China as it eases its restrictions following countrywide protests. I think i put it. Fred wave exactly. What am i mc rankings. But it's definitely second tier marvel. I think I think a lot of like my the positives for me. Whereas obviously i thought it was a great introduction to story but i think easily one of the better villains in the mc you as a whole and just the death and backstory. They gave those characters his parents i thought was probably what the movie the best and for a lot of times it was like obviously you knew it was a moral movie but kind of created its own war and kind of created its own thing and who felt very much like it could just be a action adventure fantasy movie right for a lot of it and obviously but i think as it like progress and got more connected to marvel stuff. I think that took away a lot of it especially Like in the second act. It's like a really big connection that they go into and i think A lot of times when they kind of hit that quote unquote formulas where it kind of felt. Sorry to feel more familiar in kind of lost. Some of its uniqueness. But i do think it was very For the most part was a unique entry into dmc you and then you had the third act which i think you know i said this is someone i was talking to. It's like sometimes less is more. And i think that should have been a more intimate less cgi explosions of a third. At and i think i would have enjoyed that a lot more. But i don't think any of my negatives really take away from it. I think it's a solid seven point eight. But now that i like sat on it and really think about it stuff like a solid in yates low weights and i think that's kind of what.

"Yeah. It was good. You're gonna need your popcorn, but it just didn't, I like to character of Shang. But Awkwafina for me was she stole the show? Yes. And then as Trevor, it was, that was a point of soreness for me in Iron Man three, where I was like, oh man, they're finally doing Iron Man's big villain in this, that not just another guy that also has a suit. And then they totally flipped it and I was like, I don't love this. And then they had him show up again. I thought somehow that his dad's soul was going to get released back or somehow get into Trevor, and then we would actually have been Kingsley. As that other character calling himself, I don't know. Can I just say, if his dad truly has been around for a thousand years, has conquered like all kinds of civilizations? He's like a very chill guy for someone who's been around for thousands of years in his conquered Orton to the civilizations. I did not get a thousand year conqueror vibe from him pretty laid back from megalomaniac. He was also he said I've been called master con. It's always like, oh, Genghis Khan, because they do that also in DC Comics. The character vandal savage who's a Neanderthal man who found like a meteorite and his big thing is he can never die. And so he's been several people throughout history and one of which is like Genghis Khan. And so that's why he has several progeny and those progeny somehow through him have the potential to become like metahumans. And that's how D.C. at least that's how they explained it in the young justice animated series. But that's kind of what I was picking up on in this movie as well. Interesting. Yeah. Where do you leave it? I would say three and a half for me or like 6 or what would that be 6 and a half out of ten? Yeah. Somewhere in there, 7 out of ten. 7 on ten? It was good. It was enjoyable. You know, I liked it. So I think if you average all that, I think we're three and a half out of 5. Yeah. Yeah, I mean, it wasn't all wrapped up in the marvel mythology completely. I enjoyed that about it. I had not having to go and having to do the homework of what is this tie back to or that. I'm sure that you could do the homework, but you don't have to. It was free from the yoke of marvel. The big last fight between the people of the mystical village and the ten rings was very anti climactic. He was just really the volume was turned down a little for me, and I was watching it and I was like, I'm not invested. I don't give a shit about this. Yeah, I was like, okay, we have a hundred guys against a hundred other guys. Yeah. And one is more prepared than the other. Yeah, it wasn't Russell in my jimmies. The movie was great up until that point. It didn't let no. It didn't, yeah, it didn't do it for me..

"They tried iron fist, and it failed and the Netflix series is so he had two seasons with Netflix and it was not good. And then when they kept saying that Shang-Chi had the power of the heart of the dragon, that's exactly what iron fist had. I thought Shang-Chi was going to go into this mythical route realm, who come on is the name of the mystical realm that I noticed. I really thought they were another dimension. You also have to go at a specific time to get there. You also have to it's exactly the same. I was like, oh my God, are they going? Are they having Shang-Chi, like he's going to be the iron fist? I was like, this is kind of interesting. I'll be on board with this. And then I thought behind the portal that had the evil villain was going to be their dragon God. And he was going to have to feed it on one on one combat, take out its heart, get its power, and then fight his father. The rings of the Mandarin are not at all what you see on the screen. It's in the comics. Because in the comics, it's literal finger ring. Actual fingerings, and they will shrink to where each one. Boosts your mental powers or power of electricity or flame or wind. One has its own power. So you basically have ten powers when you're wearing these rings. It's kind of like infinity stones. And I think it would be a little bit too derivative of infinity stones if they were to do that right after they just just got rid of all those. But they do have a dragon in shanxi. And there is another character. Yeah, they have fin fang foom who is an alien dragon. And the Mandarin's rings have an origin that he's an alien dragon and that race is called or the makluan or my clue, whatever..

"I used to watch whatever on Sundays they had at all old Kung fu movies, and I would kind of be doing laundry or cleaning my room and then I'd be like, oh, a fight scene. Then I would sit down and enjoy a crazy over the top stunt spectacular. Yeah. And this does deliver in mostly in the very beginning. Near the end of the film, Todd you said in their other ones, it became a little bit effects heavy and they shoehorned in some other villains like the one above darkness or the darkness below all who's kind of marvel's version of cthulhu or one of their many versions of cthulhu and who is also kind of a Doctor Strange enemy. Probably I think the defenders, I think, namor and some other characters, he's shown up in, but they've tried to fix the problem that they had with Iron Man three. And the Mandarin, where they had been Kingsley, pretending to be this terrorist. And the villain in this one is that they call them something else. Actually, they really call them anything other than Shang-Chi's father. But I looked it up earlier, his name is zoo, when Wu is the character's name that's shaanxi's father. But they tried to, again, the original character Mandarin was a very racist and much like fu Manchu, and they kind of rolled them in together to try and demand was also a real character for me. Yes, he was an Iron Man. Yeah, he was an Iron Man villain, the Mandarin, fu Manchu. The origins of those characters are very problematic. And marvel was trying to glaze over a lot of that. And there's another character that was Asian descent. There was a villain for Jimmy whoo, who we have seen in ant man and the wasp and he showed up in WandaVision as well with Darcy. He was the FBI agent helping them out. And in the comics, he was a shield agent. And they found out that he was the son or heir or descendant of another racist Asian character named yellow claw, which just even the name. Inappropriate. And they've since changed and switched that on it's here and they're like, no, technically, he's the golden claw. Well, it seems like they've rolled those all in together to this one character that was showing father. But it was a good film. It didn't feel like a marvel film, Sean pointed that out. I feel like I'm talking too much. So I'm going to somebody else. I think you made some good points. It was like a Kung fu movie, right? It didn't feel like a marvel movie. It didn't feel like we were exploring the Marvel Universe, which I think was good. Yes..

"So yeah, it's definitely the Spanish whites tend to be pretty refreshing pretty floral pretty easy to drink good patio wines. So, but also good movie ones. They're not high in alcohol. They're pretty easy on the palette. So, you know, it's one of those things where if you're looking for something that you could make an evening out of drinking. Oh yeah, this is dangerous. Yeah. That's me. Yeah. It was nice, it's very soup. Yeah, it's fine. Yeah, whenever my wife and I went to Spain, that was like one of the fun parts was just finding a nice spot getting an easy drinking ball of wine and just kind of sitting there and enjoying the day, you know? Just sitting in a nice little town square and just watching the clouds and the good weather. And do you think you can do that in most countries? You can. You can. Okay. There's something about doing it in some more exotic like Barcelona, you know? Martha lona. Yeah. It's nice to do that somewhere, you know, just exotic and beautiful. And not that ball sack where we are right now isn't just great. But you know, muskogee's mighty knives for that, but you know, it doesn't hit the same. Yeah, northeast Spain's got to beat. But anyway, and this is affordable. That's a great thing about Spanish wines and Portuguese wines. And even at some of the most Italian ones, they're affordable. I know some Italian wines could break the bank. But a lot of them don't. So you can get them for ten bucks, 15 bucks, and they're great. They're not hard on the palette and they're not hard on the wall at either. Something to think about. So Shang-Chi. Now, again, when we're warning, we're going to talk about the plot and give away some stuff. So we're going to give away a lot of stuff. Run away if you have not seen it. Bringing spoilers into it, what did you guys think we'll start with trav? First of all, trav is. Second of all. Yeah, I enjoyed it. I was a little critical of parts of it. I think the first fight scene that we got on the bus was the best fight scene in the film. I enjoyed it the best. But there was another portion in a building where he was fighting, I guess, his mentor, they never gave that character a name. Yeah. It was just like just asking. But they gave him the classic little fight where there's silhouettes in front of a screen in the background illuminating them. So as soon as I saw that, I was like, go. It's very cyberpunk. Yeah. But I want if this is like a Kung fu film like a Bruce Lee felt like I love a good ten minute fight sequence 15, 20, whatever..

In his movie she's definitely more a boisterous. Yes she's definitely the extrovert of the two. Yeah Yeah so what. You think about Mandarin in this movie. I liked him as a marvel villain goes. He goes pretty far. There's not a lot. Not a lot. I want to say on the front half here but I really doug how they handled this character. You know there were few directions. They drove his his writing and historian that either a for me felt familiar or be. There are at times when it felts over manipulated. You know like it didn't just unfold naturally type deal nevertheless. I really liked him. He's good you know like he's going to go on my books as man that was mark one of marvel's good ones. What about Yeah as with most movie wants to get to the third ad. He also me kind of falls apart a little bit. Yeah that's where some of what i was referencing to is to But for the remaining part of the movie for the first two eggs. I or half of the movie i really. I thought that he was again. One of marvel's more compelling villains like he wasn't really muster mustache twirling or you know he wasn't. He wasn't one-sided wasn't one-sided yes he's great to see like oh it's huge like it's natural. Three dimensional human being that's playing a actual three dimensional fictional villain now. Seems like it would make sense exactly. It's like yeah he He may yeah he does some evil shit but then you see like the the upside of them as well right and there's like this This balance that plays out And i thought that was a there was a cool touch. No like if you're going to make the manner in shame cheese daddy then fucking do it do it in a way that that works. yeah a mixed on the ten rings like actually use a new. You would be but yeah. I still don't really liked them but they're still just. I was afraid that will be like generic easy to watch and even fun to watch at times. Power set a i knew you would but especially once we had the preview and you had discussed in great t detail with the rings do has unique job right. I was like that is way too much for fucking movie writer that they're not gonna do it now. It's like maybe maybe a should've known when they decided to go with tim Bracelets instead of the ten rings. Well, Shaun Chi and the legend of the ten rings. The legend of the ten rings. Is a marvel film. And based on the character. And I didn't know a whole lot about this character going in other than it existed. That's pretty much all I can tell you. Yeah. I hadn't read a whole lot about it didn't know much. I only knew about the ten rings via Iron Man and his story. So, you know, and the Mandarin villain. Iron Man three, and then the one little one off they did, what was it called? Hail to the king. Nailed to the king. Kind of closing out that chapter. Yeah. So this movie was interesting for me because it was kind of a nice breaking new ground for the MCU. So travie, you want to give them a little background about Zhang Ji. So Shang-Chi is basically in the 70s marvel was doing looking into a lot of Kung fu and black exploitation. That's where you get Luke cage. And then iron fist and obviously Shang-Chi. And Shang-Chi was basically had no superpowers and was kind of their version of Bruce Lee. And I think he crossed paths with Luke cage and iron fist and daredevil. And I think he was later actually been an avenger in last ten years, I think or so. But I really don't know much about the character either. And I've read marvel for years. So it's only when he's guest starred in another book. I know of him, and I've read comics with him in it, but I've never actually read a Shang-Chi. Well, solo series. If I'm not mistaken that he kind of went away for a long time, because the 70s origins were a little problematic. Yes. And so it was kind of a trick for any writer to read that character without also bringing up a lot of the problematic origins. So I think when it ultimate came around, they were able to reintroduce a character redo some of the origins. In the comics, his father's blue Manchu, right? I believe so, yeah. Which, just on its name alone, you can see where this is going. And so I think that's why it was really dormant for a long time through that golden age of comics that 70s through 90s range where things got really big and a lot of the bigger names stood out. So I think xiang Chi was quieter, brought back up with the ultimate in the 2000 ish and now is obviously in the cinema. So we would say this is a minor character in the comic book history. Yeah, I mean, but marvel has done really great things about taking the C and D list characters and bringing them to the forefront in a new and interesting way..

"Who is chunky. And why should we care about him so strong. She has like pretty unique origins. As as it goes for marvel characters he was created by steve englehart and gemstar. Even though it made me really self conscious about my american chinese accent and i spent the whole movie like practicing in my head what the tones were and i even called my mom to tell her about it and practice saying shung chee and i was so proud and when i was talking to her she had no idea what i was saying like. She heard a word. That was completely different. So i guess. My american accent is to blame that he really liked the movie. I thought it was really fun. There's a lot of good emotion but also a lot of funny moments. And i enjoyed it immensely anger for these. Sorry what did you think. Oh man what kept happening was my brain going man. I'm having a good time was just so fun. Like i said to a lot of my friends after without getting into details about the movie because definitely don't want to spoil anything about this movie for people but i definitely think it's my favorite standalone since black panther which in and of itself is like. I can't even watch my friends kind of make a face when i would say it because it's like it has little to do other than the fact that i think they did both well with the fact that these are kind of the more you know ethnic superhero stories obviously but overall it to me was just by far the strongest stand alone of these recent movies and i just. I mean other than kind of one big main tie back like which you know people will hopefully discover for themselves. So when we do splurge it's on things like vinegar and this is one of my favorite products. So it's the cuccia in moray balsamic vinegar of modina. It's thirty five to forty dollars a bottle at whole foods which it's expensive. Yes but a little goes a long way. All you need is the finest little drizzle and the reason is so. It's so expensive is because it's really reduced. They're more grapes in this than there is in the average Balsamic vinegar and as you can see. I'm kinda like singing.
