As Broad NCAA Change Awaits, College Football Is Facing a Recruiting Reckoning
"Is national signing day. Better college football reporter out there than our next gas. Ross dellinger from sports illustrated. He has written today about the ever. Slow changes of college football especially under the heading is brought into change a wage college. Football is facing a recruiting reckoning ross. Great to have you on and it seemed like a normal day nick. Sabin got all the siamese and everybody else was left to watch but Before we get to your piece just your reaction on a fairly quiet national signing day. Yeah it is. I think we're probably going to see more of this as we as we go through the year too it's just it's signing day is going to be quieter in quieter In already worst pretty quiet because the december national signing period but now you throw all of the transfer portal stuff With coaches holding spots for transfers and in the bigger news has been has been transfers. You know so not only did the early national signing day in december Kind of cake Take the spotlight away from the old school signing day but now you have transfers doing the same think at last check do we have. We have a number on how many tennessee players are in the portal. Well the number. Last week when i did compilation for that story you mentioned was nineteen And i figured there'd be tops in the nation but they are not They're number two Western kentucky has twenty one players in the portal freight a freight ask. What's going on there. But i'll look into it after you're off the air. Let's talk about your piece today. And and every time we talk to you you you you. You have your handle on on where college athletics is. And where is it going so look ahead as you report have reported on this subject and and what is likely to change in the future right. It's to put it simply politics. It's a mess It really is a messy situation right now when it comes to roster or management's It all starts because of the the influx of transfers. You know when when there were reports were out there that the ncaa was gonna pass the one time. Transfer exception and allow allow players to transfer without that one year sitting out penalty. Obviously players jumped in the transfer portal and their or at least by my count around thousand scholarship players. Transfer portal and about fifty percent of those Do not have a home right now. There could be hundreds more joining the spring and the summer when the dog officially pass it and they will pass it by april Shane lyons The d. one Oversight football oversight chair tells me they will pass it by april so you'll you'll have a bigger influx. What happens there when you get more transfers out there. They had fewer and fewer homes to go to You you've got transferred from the power. Five paul dropping down to the group of five or the fcs. 'cause there's not any room and then there's some transfers and the poodle that won't play football again. I mean that's been documented In fact i wrote about in lsu player who two years ago with no transfer portal in. Never play football again. Because there wasn't a spot for them so and wives and their spot because as you mentioned scholarship limitations. The ncaa has the schools can carry eighty five scholarship. Players can sign twenty five new players a year only can't get go above that twenty five and because of the influx of transfers there's talk of increasing or just in some way that twenty five man spot because what a transfer does all there's so many of them What happens is if you if you get a transfer day. When they leave that school they. They're in a way penalizing that school. That's an open scholarship. That school cannot fill In an adjoining their new school. And they're taking up a to precious twenty-five chinese you know initial counters. They call them. So there's a lot of issues for sure going on

C C. Marching along like they're not even hearing the rest of the country talking. I mean, it is a singularly stunning moment. In the history of college sports. What people have to remember is that while we're essentially talking about FBI's football, volleyball, men's and women's soccer and cross country if those sports decide not to play, then that is an optics issue for football right now, the telling those other sports, you cannot compete for a national title right now. They have to decide whether or not they can compete for a national title in the spring. Shane Lyons at West Virginia is the chair of the Football Oversight Committee, he said. There are some F C s football programs. They're still trying to play some non conference football games. His team is trying to play one of them. College Athletes Forced To Sign Coronavirus Waivers To Return To Campus
"The last couple of days you certainly seen stories circulating the various schools are requiring players for voluntary workouts to sign waivers. We had Alan Green on earlier from Albany. said they talked about it. They decided not to. So. What does it really mean I? Know what it sounds like. It sounds really bad does heather has done some reporting on that and so much else, and she joins us from ESPN. Heather, great W on. It's always a pleasure. I know you know what it means, but I'll let you take the audience through the process. We said hello to you. Hey Paul. Thanks for having me on I. I think the best way to describe. It is through reporting, which is what Ohio state athletic. Director Gene Smith told me when I spoke to him last night and I asked him. Is this a way to protect yourself? Is it a liability issue? and His answer was no. This is not a legal document. That's why we're calling pledge, and that's because athletic directors throughout the country are concerned about what happens when these college kids leave the confines of Control of athletic facilities. And you know this is, this is the concern as departments are bending. Bending over backwards Paul to not only meet CDC guidelines, but to exceed them to protect these student athletes, but as soon as these players Wanna go to their favorite Taco bar to their girlfriend's house or the other bar whatever it might be all bets are off, so gene Smith is saying is we put this plan in place to try to get them to promise to us that? When they leave the athletic facilities, they will wear a mask. They will social distance. They will be responsible and do what they can to protect themselves the team and stop the spread of the corona virus. I'm glad you explained that. Because we've all been reacting with our is Eyebrows raised heather beyond that. You can't just look at your television and get a snapshot that the numbers are going up because we're. We're in a different spot here. Fourteen weeks in. We were weak, one two or three, but. Some of this negativity comes at really inopportune time as college football moves, everything else moves toward an opening what? What is your reporting? Tell you about where we are well. I've been on the phone all day. Actually trying to answer that question because things are changing and I spoke to Florida. Athletic Director Scott Stricklin today, because he's in Florida where cases arising, and he's still very optimistic. That college football is going to start on time and we're. They are located. I don't WanNa. Use the word safe, but they don't have a lot of cases within their outlet department right now in the community that they're in and you know I was on there. Zoom call last week with. With her doctors and they did a fantastic job again putting things in place to protect student athletes. Now you go to Houston where they had to shut down everything because there were not only six positive cases, but the keeping they were symptomatic. I don't know what to what degree, but that's important because it reminds everyone that they are student athletes. Yes, they are not invincible. Nobody knows exactly how this is going to impact the person that actually gets infected by so I think that's important to remember and I also talked to big twelve. Commissioner Bulls beat today. Yes I'm still very confident that we're going to have a college football season. You're going to see college football games, but it's going to be interrupted. It might be at levels at different places based on the resources that they have going to have outbreaks. Some schools will be able to handle them. Some schools will not and then finally I just hung up with Shane Lyons. Who is the chair of the Football Oversight Committee and he had a great quote, he said the coronavirus is controlling us. We are not controlling it. So as he said as I, sit here today I. Think we're going to have a college football season, but anybody who tells you that they actually know is lying.

"All right. And now a quick note from our ZipRecruiter's smartest fan of the week. This is sage table data. Visit for cooter. Smartest fan of the week. Field Yates is my favorite member of six Owono because his mom makes the best snacks on play dates. Shell. Yeah. No. You were like all in. And then then. Yeah. By the way, Shane Lyons gates makes good snacks, as I gotta be honest with you also makes great Christmas themed all kinds of baked goods. She's the maestro square. I look forward to them coming in. I look. Raspberries. We're Buckeye from Columbus a big game on for on Sundays. So listen 'cause I know Patty. Buckeye, but those raspberry scores. Well, listen, I I know the I know that field sister, the lovely caddy. It's listens to every show. So listen caddy. Just a direct message from your pal Mattie to you. I don't believe field. We'll take any of these treats in. So I need you to figure out a way to get them to the owner. Mama gates treats, get them here to the six zero. Don't trust field with them. I'm just I'm just asking you also friend of friends what I can do. Let's get to the wide receiver agile. The we break once Smith for the saints was unbelievable last week ten for one fifty seven and a touchdown in week eleven now listen that nearly what he had for the entire season leading up to that point. This is the upside ad though. This is just trust the talent trust the offense. And heck they need somebody to catch passes. Besides my Thomas amongst their wide receivers they've gotten some solid contributions from David Kirkwood and Austin Carr amongst other players, and perhaps Brandon Marshall see some work here. But trick wants myth is far towns at anywhere else. They have besides my Tom's a wide receiver other than the two teams that played last night. There may not there's not a hotter. Offense in the NFL than the saints. You could argue there on. I mean, like, it's unbelievable. Just how good they are how dial than they are and trae Kwan Smith who impressed so much in the preseason. And we talked about how many rows he was running and Ken he can that translate reduction. We finally saw it translate last week. So certainly trae Kwan Smith there's a lot of upside there we've seen the number two wide receiver. Ted Ginn was what a top thirty wide receiver last week years something like that. So we've seen the number two. Yeah. We're live here field. And it's the holidays. My family would like not like me to get fired. So close to the holidays, but Trayvon Smith is certainly somebody that needs to be rostered in more leagues. Let's move over to Baltimore. No. We talked about Lamar Jackson. We talked about Gus Edwards. Like, you're all ravens this week this week. I have a little bit of positive one in Willie Snead. But over ten points in eight of ten games. So far this season. They threw the ball nineteen times last week. So I turn Willie Snead could be I mean, it might be this Matthew it might be that one ravens wide receiver proves to be fantasy relevant for each week that Lamar Jackson start whether that's just one more. Whether that's five more games or have many games they have left this season. So there are some mitigating circumstances here, but Willie seat has been so steady, and so solid. And right now, if you're going to have to fill in for a player, like tyreek hill or Robert woods or Brandin cooks like you'll be taking the hit. They don't just have twenty points per game wide receivers available in the waiver wire. But. You would take somebody that could get you ten. He there's a floor there..

"The break i think greg i think tim fitzgerald rising up the charts is one of my favorite guests on cavs louise great emini's he's doubt downright honest he's funny at i don't know if we can get him by better as tim fitzgerald go power to cat com coming up here in just a few minutes tom colin the now former coach baseball coach at will have a high school now she's stepping down today storied career for tom down at will hummel will talk to him here in just a little bit about that career but first let's get back to some comments from shane lyons earlier today one of them greg we spent a lot of time debating this during basque while season on this show should the marshall wvu basketball game return should it beyond the schedule we saw go away i think if you listen to the show with any kind of regularity and no were hunter and i stand on this was shane lyons think about the capital classic returning we haven't had that discussion basketball were focused on having pit back on on the schedule in basketball with marshall and no the catholic classic that's all changed the years obviously though that was once it was started during the legislative session in january that was moved back and all that there was a lot it's the disgusting if if they wanna play will play him here but there has been a lot of interest in that no surprise i still don't like that answer and i death don't even talk to him about playing here i don't like that don't don't worry i'm not getting into that debate now now let's say them for basketball using consistent with that for several years is i've talked to him um played here don't blood what's at a that option i don't wanna played her like in charleston another subject very timely given what we spent last night talking about on the show about.

"Sunday night baseball on espn radio back here admitted made why we are used for judge yhombi chris single canada big break ball from david price drops it for a strike as jake maria nick gets a chance he he marizzi nick who flight the left his first time off now the pit in another curve at establish winger to me maria snake we documented out good he is defensively and a guy who is take into this role both employees every day replace a pick look inside it now wanted to f one of the things about this astra's squabbles you can't really complain about your role your risk or if you're greg man who's not play it every single day because we often see struggles because we look up and see how well the teams playing and now out in front they are in the division and you just got to hang with a and by into the team concept of hayes longer winning games expitchers outside the red sox dugout start get after greg gibson prior to the previous he took off his mask you let him know that's enough so they feel it must robes getting some pitches the price is not the key to checks weighing it up all the dirt didn't go where space on fire shane lyons parker live it's bargar delivered a safe son we get a super slow mole look at the replay and he definitely hilde great four times the not they do not hold up briatore judo price hicks by sweigert amiss yet a strike out for david price as his first of the night wild isn't it i mean that's but i also think it tells you i know he's given up a run in three innings i do think that that that strikeout lumber gives you an idea of just how sharp he's been worship how sharp he has not been the ailuk the astros they get the secondhighest home run runrate in the league and the lowest strikeout rates that's pretty impressive when you consider their mashing the ball in they're not striking out very much but expitchers lie caught a short as bogart smears that one out of the year off the bat of spranger judea.
