"You're listening to think did you features mine, Shane Anderson. And this is Kathleen, Patrick, she's well hard to describe. Hell let's go re presents communicate a geologist that'll live Kathleen is in puff. And I'm in Sydney, so a chatting urva Skype about a trip that she took in twenty sixteen to entitle like most sea voyages south it all began in a town cold Shwe in Tina America, are is a tourist stiff up point franchesca. We will run down there. I'm like had a dial in town. Hotel kind of up the hill. So if you had a window was pointing the right way, you could actually see the chip sitting down in the hub, and it was tiny compared to the other ship around. It we've done whole here in a little can. We in. This case is Kathleen and seventy eight of the women working in stem industries that is science technology engineering medicine and maths who was setting off for a two week trip. Twin taught to go. The first part of the sea voyage is the notorious Drake's passage you can get Greg like, which is absolutely flat or in the IT made a kind of swells, which one did you get we drank like, and you know, while there was a small part of gang. It'd be nice to just see how scary it is also quite thankful from that. It's a couple of days to reach the tip of the antibiotic peninsula Kathleen says there was a bottle of wine in it for the first person to spot an iceberg. She didn't win. In the moment. We saw that. Say that was the the clinch yet with nothing Kansas anymore. We mice differently heading toward somewhere that basically most of pain. The first bit of land that was jumping out with the gentle nuns, and baby striking nice and big combs vessel. And you know, the the roof nerd I can in the distance oven on that rock. I will drop down in hell, I can tell will. Yeah. It was pretty damning pretty exciting. So Kathleen was heading to taco for project cooled firm would bound which sends a ship full of women in stem industries to talk Takata to help inspire and network the next crop of leaders in their fields. It's a program designed to address one of the lingering questions hanging over basically every industry concerned with the future. Why don't they will women in stem? And frankly, this question is a little tired. We'll come back to us Skype journey to Antarctica in a bit. But first I want to ask not what women can do to get into stem. But what stem industries should be doing for women and why the lack of gender race and class. Diversity is a symptom of fall bigger problems in these industries? It's time for some stem. Stem ISM is would I just made up? But we all know by now that science technology, engineering math and medicine a dominated by men, particularly white men. I don't need to give you the stats on that hard to find only run. But I'm sick of hearing about how the lack of women in stem could be fixed. If we just made subjects like maths more attractive to women as if all you need to do is lay Eidarous Elber out as bait, and we'll all be fooled into getting an engineering degree, then this biological argument. Which suggests that women just naturally wired to prefer to sit on the couch. Watch the notebook and cry over a tub of ice cream because that's what I'll cave women says did with rocks or whatever these stupid and that easy to refute. But then this the more insidious arguments like the one that says that we can reach parody. If we women just put out heads down and try Hotta, we should be more confident. We should look more professional. We should become a Garg Etta put in the hours and you'll be ready. For your efforts lean in. Tell me what are the three. Biggest mistakes women. Make in the workplace. Not believing in themselves sitting at the table side of the room sitting room. That's right. Yes. This is Sheryl Sandberg the car and chief of operations of one of the biggest companies in the world Facebook, she's talking to Oprah about theory, lean in it's a topic of her book, lean in women work in the wheel to lead and the catalyst full global community dedicated to helping women achieve their Embiid means and the problem is this women are not making it to the top of any profession anywhere in the world. How do we change these numbers at the top? How do we make this different? We've got to get women to sit at the table. It's the kind of mentality that has probably helped millions of women steal themselves before they walk into an intimidating meeting. But as a philosophy desert problem. You can lead in as much as you want. But if you're Orgainzation doesn't have proper caring policies, if they don't give women study leave if they don't pay women in equitable way to men than women will never advance. This is Meredith Nash senior lecturer in sociology at the university of Tasmania Leinen is an inspiring mantra. But that's just it. It's self help not change. It's a sort of form of feminism. And I'm here, I'm using feminism in inverted commas, where we're sort of talking about a very sort of cynical version of Eminem in which women are told that they're in power, if they just become more confident when in fact, all those efforts are only individual, and when this is only individual, it's less a global feminist movement. And we're a network of people out for their own gain. This isn't to attack Cheryl sandbag personally with NetWorth somewhere between twenty five million and a billion dollars. It's clear that leaning in has worked for her. Her. But as hard to say, whether this strategy has worked for other women employees at her own workplace. There's only one other women who leaned into a spot on the Facebook board and the early sailing people hit in tech industries early one member of the Facebook Ford, isn't why. Is everyone else just not trying hard enough? When it comes to banishing the mid surround discrimination in the workplace. We don't have to look for from San book. She comes from the tech industry and nowhere. Feels the Gary is of sexism more keenly than the stem fields. Staff Google or walking off the job today. It is happening all across this Google earth, their protests companies treatment of women, and they're demanding big changes recently stuff genders went on strike to protest the ongoing discrimination against women in the workplace I've had to hear about and watched so many people leave the company after experiencing mistreatment and harassment, and I've seen from and be unable to get promotion until they there and leave.

"Self. Even if you are now in coverage, and this type of content is buried in your online history, say you, spend hours, and hours and hours and hours on it. And then now pot of your recovery's that you're trying not to use Osho Bedia, the algorithms that govern Instagram and Facebook will still be pushing pro Ana and pro Mia images your way, it's like putting a glass of beer in front of someone in recovery from alcohol addiction and asking them not to drink it. The me awhile. I think so interesting about eating disorders, another things like self hall and other kinds of you know, mental illnesses in stigmatize conditions. Is that I don't think it's says easy to say. This doesn't belong as it would be, you know, a video of violence, for example, big portion of women who seek out pro Ana websites report suffering from an eating disorder visitors to these websites commonly report that they are seeking support in relation to those disorders often after traditional therapies have been unsuccessful. I think that that is such value to social media for people who have socially stigmatized conditions and just like the visitors to these websites. Most publishers of pro Ana content are women. Themselves who suffer from the illness? This some people, you know, that tone blood that Instagram anything is the only space where they can talk about what that going through. It's the only space where people understand a why they can just be themselves. If pro Ana and other eating disorder content is minimized blocked and pulled from the public sphere. Then it could make it more difficult for these communities to seek the help they need to cover. And so I think platforms do have a responsibility to an extent to remove some of the worst kinds of content from the web, but at the same time for the specific issue. I think it's much harder. And I think it's actually dangerous in some respects to say that it doesn't have a place because of the value of social media facility different people. What the act of policing them? How you doing it? Is doing full how society thinks of certain issues, you know, if Instagram safe, you know, we don't want pro eating disorder content will what does that say to the pro recovery community? What does that say to people who just want to talk about how the feeling it sends a very mixed signal? Images used by pro. Ana websites are most often taken from other sources, they include photos from fashion magazines celebrities well known models and now infamous Instagram influencers, these images disturbing and worthy of moderation and policing in the context of pro Ana websites are fairly common in public space, so removing them and pushing this community underground can reinforce negative messages about eating disorders messages that tell young girls they should be ashamed of their illness that they should hide it even more than they already do. Offering people rather than kind of just blocking that content, but maybe offering support group and a support network for people struggling with eating disorders or any mental health condition would be much more helpful way to moderate it. But I don't think that them using these Premio websites is going to all pages is going to actually support them at the same time police in it. I don't think that would be the most successful thing and getting rid of it because they'll find another way to do it. So it's not that, you know, it's not black and white and it's not simple. Thanks for listening to think digital futures. "This is think sustainability today pot to of how technology is connecting us with the natural world from producer, Shane Anderson. It sounds like a rainforest. You can hear the peaceful tutoring buds in the trees above and the gentle flow of water from a strain nearby. You can always here the humidity in the air. But none of this is real. Can you describe what you're seeing now? So ROY now, I mean, the lobby this is a custom entry point for the experience. So it's this is Ryan Watson head of community engagement at a not for profit called new horizons, and we're not in the middle of a rainforest where actually at new horizon Sydney headquarters and today Ryan is here to guide me on a virtual reality journey through a stray Leah's natural environments, a destination today is the Great Barrier. Reef point straight ahead when my little masters hovering over I click on it to enter. So I'm in now to the reef and I'm having a look around. I can see some people that are snorkeling and paddling around down on on directly above some really beautiful coral, I can see lots of fish and sort of moving through at a nice pace through the reef almost as if I was scuba diving and swimming under the water myself. Lots of amazing call life and fish, and I'm sort of coming up now out of the water. And I'm flying over the reef I can see some votes some little sandbars and oil off in the distance. And if oh down it's just the beautiful turquoise waters of the Great Barrier. Reef. It's really so it's it feels so real. Have you been to the Barrier Reef in real life to the right by rape? But never Ailey copter, and to do that sort of really low flyover over the Great Barrier. Reef for me was the really cool thing because it was a perspective never had on the on the reef. We often think of technology as creating a barrier between us in the environment. That were too busy looking at our screens to appreciate the world around us. But there are ways technology can help us to engage with nature on an emotional level. And it can open up doors to a world that for some seem to be permanently closed. I think it's a great question to ask is how does technology enabled us, and how do we make sure we do it in a way that inclusive Ryan and the team at new horizons came up with this virtual reality experience in response to questions like this. The project is called parallel pox and at aims to use technology to not just assist people. But to empower them. Great. Pirlo pox is an initiative that's aiming to help people with disability and other mobility issues to be able to remove barriers and access places. Parts of the world that they may never have otherwise been able to access through the power of reality. They wanted to know how they could make a stray Leah's national parks more accessible because why shouldn't the benefits of being outdoors be available to everyone at first. They had a couple of ideas as to how to do this one was raising money to build things like ramps within the national parks. But this came with a whole set of problems will there's obviously really high cost and a lot of complexity in being able to make some really inaccessible and remote places accessible when you have a disability or an accessory -bility issue holidays. Look a lot different before you've even left the door. You could be racking up an enormous Bill. Mayo you to go to the Great Barrier. Reef Mark cost us a couple of thousand dollars. Af as an accommodation. That's a much more costly and involve process, traveling with care is making sure that they have appropriate. Disability access at every place that they going those sorts of things make it a lot more complicated said they thought why not bring the pox to the people using virtual reality technology. That's already available on the market. Name is Catherine Marie Smith. I'm a young fifty. This is cath a program embassador full, parallel pox. She was also one of the first people to try this virtual reality experience. I like to go by king on Tuesdays and Thursdays. I love playing with my cat. Matilda Cass has limited mobility. She uses a wheelchair to get around and communicates through text to speech software. This is clearly Nouri Barrio to active lifestyle. I had a chat to about some of the challenges. She faces getting out into nature. I would love to do more in the way of activities. It's a bit hot for me. There is not even accessible rods in the Blue Mountains. I wanted to go on the train ride up and down the hills. But couldn't it is ridiculous. How much it costs for me to do very basic things? Have you ever used virtual reality before I had used V once but. It was a long time ago, which experience is your favorite and why I chose the Great Barrier. Reef because I am awarded baby. It took me back. There had been once before why do you think VR experiences of nature are important parallel? Pox is important because it brings exposure if I could have the experience of going up and down those hills in the Blue Mountains in via. I would I would always choose the reality smiley face.
