"The two manmade waterfalls in the footprints of the towers with names of those lost engraved all around. Today we're going to be remembering what happened with some of my axios co workers and we'll hear from them in a little bit yesterday. It was a rainy day when we were there. There were a lot of discussions about how to commemorate that day in the lives. Lost near the site you might remember. They were plans to build an islamic community center and mosque just a few blocks away. Eleven years ago the anti-defamation league an ngo focused on the defamation of jewish people and the fair treatment for all opposed the location of that center. But this week the national director. In a cnn op. Ed apologize for that stance. Jonathan green lab is a ceo in national director of the ad l. And with us. Now hi jonathan. Thank you for having me. And i should say Shana tova. Why was it important for you to write about this during what is now. The holiest part of the jewish year. This is the annual Jewish new year. Rosh hashanah at this time jews around the world. Think about not just the year ahead but the year that's been and we engage in a process called chewbacca or repentance we reflect on moments when you missed it and if you wrong people how you hope to do to do right by them you know. I've been the ceo of ad l. for six years but it's a legacy organization with a story history for all of the successes we've had. We've also missed the mark a few times. One of those moments. Where i i don't think we necessarily represented. Our values was a decision that was made at ad l. Some eleven years ago when the organization decided not to support the cordova house. This multi-faith effort that was championed by some muslim activists as a way to try to not just feel the city of new york really heal the country and unfortunately i think that noble intention was slandered by some ad. L. to be honest got engaged in issue eighty l. didn't belong. We actually end up feeding into anti-muslim. Hate and i think that was a low point for this organization at felt like in this moment as we approach the twentieth anniversary it was an appropriate point just to account for our sense and to acknowledge the error it to seek to do better by the muslim community in the years ahead. What is your assessment as the ceo of the media where we stand as a country in terms of fair treatment for everyone. You continue to see anti-muslim sentiment specifically normalized in the media and expressed in popular culture in so many ways when demonization has been normalized. I think we've really got a deep and invoke our better angels and resist that temptation and push back those people who engage in this kind of hate. What role do you want. Interfaith groups to plan all of this. Some of the most impressive important community building is indeed happening.

For four Americans that were rescued out of Kabul. But basically there's the State Department saying we help this and it was a private group that raised private money to get these people out there saying no State Department, you bunch of liars. You had nothing to do with this. So again. This is this is all propaganda. They're trying to spin it as if they are not leaving any American behind. The truth is they have left at least 100, if not more in Kabul. Over 100, if not more, so they're forming a new government. And it's like a terrorist All Star team Now I saw some news about colleagues. Sheikh Mohammed. Is that right that they are? Yes, he was in prison. There's still No, they are, but they're trying to actually have the trial for Khalid Sheikh Mohammed 20 years after the fact this is there's a pretrial hearing this week. And it was supposed to be. It was originally scheduled for early 2020. But because of covid it got delayed and you know, because the federal government everybody has to wear like 18, Mass. And the 48 ft apart. That there's all these issues trying to actually get these court cases off the ground. The Taliban has invited six countries to take part in the announcement. Turkey, China, Russia, Iran, Pakistan and Qatar. And this is exactly what we've been saying. Our sources were correct. And the Biden regime brokered this completely wanna say happy New Year to all of our Jewish listeners. La Chana Tova. Which means happy to the head of the year. "Recipe A fall and Russia Shanna you're gonna start with one cup of olive oil one cup of granulated sugar half a cup of honey. Three quarters a cup of apple sauce, two eggs and a teaspoon of vanilla. We're gonna whisk this up, then. For the dry two and a quarter cups of all purpose flour teaspoon of salt, ground cinnamon ground nutmeg and a half teaspoon of baking soda and baking powder. We're gonna fold this all together and then throwing too honey crisp apples chopped up into pieces. Get back. Buying. We're going to add this to a parchment line nine inch square baking dish. Bake at 3 50 for about 15 minutes until golden. I finish off a little powdered sugar. And then you just got to cut yourself a big old slice and have the sweetest New year ever. Shana Tova. I love that the soundtracks there. So how did you come up with this recipe? And I'm curious about your thoughts of of Tiktok as a recipe delivery system. Yeah. I mean, I love it. I love to talk all of my recipes. Now, if they're not in my cookbook, they are on tiktok or instagram reels. I have no interest in Yeah. Not meeting people where they are, and they're on social media. So if that's one way to help inspire people to cook, and I'm going to do that this recipe is is kind of a response to Two things. I wanted to have a really easy like parvo dessert for people who do keep kosher. I'm very open tonight. I am not kosher, but I love the challenge of part baking in me because I mean, who in this day and age doesn't have a sensitivity to dairy. Um, and from there, I wanted something that would be super easy. I think I get a lot of Requests from my audience. And and the thing that I learned the most is that everyone has a different skill set in different comfort when it comes to entertaining, and I want to provide all the tools so people feel empowered that they can host Holiday host a meal at dinner party, Russia Tiana and feel like it's going to be easy. They're not going to lose their minds and pull out their hair. Coronavirus: Israel marks Jewish New Year with second lockdown
"Rush Shawna or Jewish New Year begins at sunset this evening. But for Israel this new. Year's anything. But happy as the country becomes the first major economy to enter into a second. Nationwide lockdown against a backdrop of serious discontent towards the handling of the pandemic and the Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu himself Israel, which was one of the first countries to enact stringent measures to inhibit the spread of the virus is shutting down. It's basically necessary because our infection rates which reached a really dramatic low back in in May. have been creeping up all through the summer months and then I'm have basically exploded beginning. A connection between the fact that kids went back to school on. September first and that since then the the rates have been have been doubling and and surging among the general population at an unprecedented rate before that, it was basically concentrated in certain populations, certain cities, certain neighborhoods. But as kids went back to school, it just exploded across the entire population. So this goes against what the so corona virus saw said a couple of months ago when he asserted the socio economic trauma inflicted by covert restrictions was greater than its health impacts. So can you help line the state of the economy and how these further restrictions will impact on businesses? Well. So there's a huge bitter angry rebellion by business owners small and large and not insignificant chance that this time around because people have much less faith than they did in the first lockdown there's going to be a lot of businesses I predict violating the restrictions and an opening for business even in the face of the of the restrictions I mean, what does the Don actually entailed? Everything must close. Everything must close except for essential services such as supermarkets and and pharmacies public offices will be open, but they won't receive. receive the public in In Government Offices Private businesses. Again, this came after fight are two privately reopened with a with a minimal amount of staff in in Workplaces So you know the economy is being partially allowed to function. That's why there are so many as they say, Swiss cheese holes in this lockdown but they're worried that you know in the attempts to keep the economy going to an extent know if schools are out, you can't have a full economy running. That they're putting so many holes in it in order to keep the the economy functioning at a certain rate that it's going to be ineffective in terms of of actually bringing the infection rate down significantly what about the situation in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip? The situation is bad there too. There's a lockdown in Gaza right now and and the West Bank is also suffering from from it from an outbreak. So they are they're not in any kind of renewed full scale lockdown, the way that that we are, but they are they're in a difficult place as well. Now, this as you mentioned a huge amount of opposition to this and people are actually protesting who's out on the streets. Well There's always been a religious secular divide in. Israel? Approximately. Twenty twenty, five percent of our population are Orthodox smaller. percent of that are also Orthodox and those daybreak cities where the ultra-orthodox resided partially because of the large family size there and how how dense their residences is that has been really a hotbed of infection as well as Arab towns and. Cities and so it's been very hard for them to specially over a long period of six months to stop with their large gatherings, their traditions, their prayers, etc, and that is countered by. On, the other side and on the secular side, the need to protest against a Netanyahu how he's had this corruption trial, they've had large protests. So basically, there's this back and forth going on why can we not gather in a? Study Jewish learning while you can gather on the streets and have a protest, and for example, why can you go to your ritual baths and we can't go to the beach? So there's there's a lot of fourth fighting and then the the biggest and most desperate cry is from the business owners who are feeling so much economic pain. So there's protests coming from from all directions and how will this affect the political situation? While the political situation isn't good to begin with one of the reasons that Israel has been. So crippled in fighting the corona virus situation is as I said, really hotbeds of infection at least as of two three months ago we're in these ultra-orthodox cities neighborhoods, and what the coronavirus czar planned to do came in trying to do is to really shut those cities down and really be able without harming the economy on a large scale to focus the approach inside these communities and political pressures. made it impossible for Netanyahu, to really stand behind his are and do the because the ultra Orthodox parties said, if you close our cities if you shut down now. If, you don't allow us to go to synagogue. We are going to leave your coalition and basically bring down the government, and that's why at every turn these ultra-orthodox parties have been able to twist the government's arm into allowing them to have more freedom than the secular public looks at what's going on in the religious sector and they say, well, if they're not GONNA do it. We're not going to do it, and then you've got a very bad dynamic there. I listen Israel forced all foreign arrivals to self isolate on March the night that was before the World Health Organization announced that it was in fact, a pandemic given the the the country is now in this situation, won't you think that other nations around the world can learn by watching this? I think really the biggest lesson that that Israel can teach the world is. Opening up schools particularly when it above the age of ten or so is really a dangerous difficult and problematic as much as we all want to see our children. In school learning getting an in person education that that is really the trigger. This is now the second time that that sending kids to school have have sent our infection rates. Rising, and that's why any kind of a resumption of studies has to be done extremely slowly carefully in a measured way starting with the youngest kids and slowly going. Up and keeping a very, very strong monitoring. On how that that is affecting the society because kids go to school, they get infected, they come home in the infect their entire families.
