That's what you got to do. So interviewing interviewing is basically getting the right people and getting the right people is critical. So let's jump into today. The common mythology or mistake most restaurants make is we put people together and I would ask you right now and just go ahead and type in the chat if you can. I'll go to their restaurants and I work one on one with their team. A lot of times I listen to the words that your team says and I'm listening to the words that you say. So the other thing that she's doing that a lot of the other artists are not doing is she is a lancer pissed. So she's doing good things. She's using her popularity and her money to help people and you might not be as popular for doing that which you will have people who will always be in your corner because they see the whole picture view is a i in these other. So when she's not doing her you know music she's working with philanthropy and those are things that people really connect with and we'll keep her relevant and successful longer than the other things and on top of it. I really think that that's something that people really resonate with the right people have to appeal to everybody. "We have our super bowl. Halftime performer is officially the weekend. He'll be performing at the super bowl this year. It's all very interesting to be honest. I can't even forgot about like i know. Football season is happening. i've talked about. I have a football podcast. I talked about it every week but the super bowl halftime show Was something. I wasn't thinking about just because concerts have been cancelled and we haven't seen any really live shows so it took me by surprise i was like. Oh wow. that's something that is that is still happening. But the weekend is ultra ultra ultra talented. And he'll find like a way to make this very cool. I'm sure all of his performances are insane. He does a phenomenal job. Every single time he gets up on stage at an award show or whatever it is he really puts in a lot of effort and really makes a statement and makes people think with his performances. Which i think is going to be really cool for the super bowl obviously shakira and j. last year and everybody was excited for that. They were shaking their asses up on stage singing controversially. Yeah some people were pissed but let me tell you we were loving us not definitely not at all. I support that one hundred percent. And they were up there looking. Fantastic jalen shakira. How can you not be excited about that. So i feel like the weekend is going to have a little bit of a different reaction. Just because i feel like older people do know jaylo and shakira. More than they know the weekend i be like younger. Our usual format our new usual format a little bit kneel at we have the opportunity to sit down with the General Chair and senior program chair or this year's interruption of the international conference on learning representations I clear which was entirely virtual this year Alexander Rush of Cornell and Shakira Muhammad of deep. Mind thank you so much for joining us today. I really appreciate it off. Excellent Catherine great to be here. I'd love to do a little bit of background on. I clear I just sort of like mainly to give us a sort of a context for the conference in in the ecosystem of other conferences. WanNa know how did the conference get to where it is today? Yes thank you neil. That sounds like a very good question. How the conference get to where it is today. This year was already breaking ground. It was going to be taking place in Ethiopia which I think is the first time any of the large conferences have been held on the African continent But then all of a sudden we had this massive global change and it was decided that the conference would take place entirely. Virtually so Sasha. I'd love to hear from you a little bit more about how you see. I clear fitting into the larger system of conferences. And what your experience with. It's been and how this change took place shore so this was the eighth international conference of learning representations but it was run as a workshop for several years so it started in two thousand thirteen. And I think what's remarkable about the conference it's been experiencing exponential growth for the last basically for its entire history and so it's a conference where everyone is kind of a newcomer each year. We have most people kind of experiencing it for their first time. I think personally I didn't really attend. I clear till about three or four years ago and I was coming from it from the natural language processing community so conferences like ACL P that she makes up a relatively large part of kind of this multi disciplinary area. It's a conference. That kind of welcomes a large group of people doing different forms of representation learning and deep learning and things of that form I think it differs from some of the other machine learning conferences in that. It's a bit more experimental. I think a lot of people know it for its experimental reviewing format and for the structure of how it's laid out and I think one of the reasons it was so interesting to work on is because it's a conference that kind of allows for more experimentation in its format in its structure and we took that to heart in both the venue this year and also in kind of change to the virtual conference format. So this sort of like the experimental stuff it does on its own. It was the first to open reviewing. And then there's the experimental stuff that's forced upon it so. I find so amazing. What you had to do this year is first of all you were taking a major conference to the African continent for the first time which was a major undertaking in itself. And then you had to cancel the first major conference on the African continent. Tell us how how I don't know who's best to sort of speak to that. She cared. Do you want to tell us how that came about? And how you reacted yes. I think we were actually quite far along in our work dealing with the European conference it was going to be in a great venue in the Millennium Hall. Very close to the airport in Ethiopia. Lots of things have been set up. Even down to the whole Shedu of the conference itself was set up. The we're going be three. Parallel tracks experimented the conference in that way. All the keynotes. All the speaking. The setup of the post is all of these kinds of things are done and then it was a difficult time the end of February the beginning of March when it was very clear that the long run of cove it and would come into effect and a lot of consideration and debate with many many different kinds of people around actually cancelling the conference. But I think in the end You know it was obviously a good decision. Forced us to experiment in the new way so I was pretty happy with the with the end to actually get to do it. So what was the thing that Chicago pops happiest about about the way the conference went the thing that surprised you the most because I know both of you I mean it must be in so much stress. Just organizing a major conference like this is like major stress in in the base case and then organizing one where you have to reorganize the entire conference within the space of a few weeks. I just can't imagine it but let's start with the positive things and and pats that recession. Say She Sasha. What was the thing that you most pleasantly surprised about about the conference? Yeah so there. I think there were a lot of things that kind of were unexpected or kind of emergent behavior. That came up during the conference itself. The part that I think I spent the most time on and was most excited about was the the social interactions particularly chat and the socials. That emerged I think that was the part we were most worried about. It's the part I get the most out of conferences talking to experts in the field kind of having conversations that you didn't expect or learning about papers that you didn't know that we're coming. We really built that around kind of slack. Like chat experience and seeing the different topic rooms emerged. There was a very interesting created. A I room. That came out of nowhere. The community had several very interesting events. That were just so neat to attend and then we also ran several mentoring sessions just kind of out of nowhere in the middle of the conference that were super interesting and kind of almost better than I would have imagined. But he's in the industry exactly and then not to mention writers and actors and producers directors. Sure we're definitely in the entertainment district. Here hub yeah cool all right so bro. The career musician it is what it is right. A lot of people say. What does that mean? Well we've made a living out of playing music so I kinda dub does as career music. Yes somehow we've made it work exactly. Yeah against all odds so look I. I WanNa talk about a brief history. Okay I think you went to the University of Miami is I did. What got into music? What was the impetus that said you know what? I'm going to be a musician but I'm going to be a bass player as well. Well that was early on I mean just as a Kid. I think a lot of us that end up doing this. You know we discover music when we're really young and we just like it. We don't know anything about it. We don't play an instrument yet but we're just into it and that was me. I I listen to a lot of stuff. I was really into it when MTV came out. I just could not stop watching it. I just saw people playing on. Mtv knows like man. I want to do that so then when the time came I I gotta get started taking lessons for just a few months and then I was in a music store once waiting for my lesson in there was based on the wall and I was like. What's that and the guys who get the Bass Guitar and I? I had no idea what that was. It was like I wanNA check that out so as I'm waiting for my guitar lesson I start playing this basin it immediately just like wow like this instrument. This is what I WANNA play. Wow that's who's who's kind of like that. Yeah what what was it? Because there was only four strings would they because they were thicker the vibrations the lower frequency? I can't explain it. It's just like I started playing it and just really dug it. I was like wow. This thing's really cool like and then I kind of learned what it is and what its function isn't a band and Yeah just started taking lessons on one of those i. I was a caddy at the time. Saved up some money caddying at the golf course and bought a Kramer Bass Kramer Duke Bass Guitar. Oh Yeah that was in Norwalk Connecticut. You probably know where that is your from. Long Island right absolutely now not too far away. Yeah all right. So then what brought you down to Miami and eventually over here. Well I've you know pretty soon got pretty serious about it like I had my high school garage band jam on. Know Van. Halen led Zeppelin stuff like that. Then my family moved to Cleveland. Ohio and I was kind of thrust into all the all the groups in the school. Like in the music program like the Renault Bass players so I got thrust into jazz band concert band marching band. Because they didn't have Tubas so I played in marching band with a wireless and then look would do play in the pit orchestra for the musicals. They'd have it high school so I was just kind of thrust into all these situations that that made me a better musician you know I had to. I had to learn to read ahead to to play jazz. I had to learn. You know all all that kind of stuff you know. Kinda made me get serious about music and then started auditioning for other stuff around Cleveland. I played in this like all state jazz band called Ohio Jazz Orchestra for Youth and got my ass kicked in that really like you know. Made Me Kinda step up and shed a lot and that's a trip. How about half of the right? Yeah Yeah so. How did you learn how to read and and play changes and whatnot and jazz because you're going from rock and Roll Jazz? That's a transition. Oh yeah totally. I was a metal head before I did that. Likud I moved to Cleveland. I was like into thrash metal and stuff like that and like you know I started taking theory in the in the high school band director was was like. Oh you know we need to play jazz. Been and all this stuff and I'd never played any of that stuff before I had never read anything so I was just thrust into it and I had to learn and I got Got A teacher in Cleveland and helped me start reading and I got some reading books and practised reading. You know it was just like trial by fire. Sink or swim. You know if there's something that I couldn't figure out how to like take it home and figure it out you know and this is the days before the Internet Youtube to just look it up. Oh no I just had to kind of learn from books and learn from a teacher and just learn about putting the hours in just by you know Kinda practicing reading rhythms and reading notes and the more I did that in the more reading situations I got put into Just kind of the better I got at it and it was a very valuable skill that I was fortunate enough to learn on right. Incredible did you ever use the clap out? The rhythms before is doesn't that table. I remember I would just sit in bed with my book and like a flashlight and a pencil and I would just kind of like nod my head to the quarter note just tap out. The rhythms can only do that for a half hour before bed. You know things like that or if I if I had time where I didn't have my base with me and I couldn't like actually practice do that. Yeah just tap out the rhythms just to Kinda learn how to read rhythms. I talk about that all the time to this day. I'll be sitting on the airplane writing a chart totally an IPAD and you can just tap it out and you can count through it and slow it down right. Yeah I do that all the time just like on planes. Because that's like you know downtime. You have a lot of times in between gigs or whatever and you're like okay. We'll I can use. I can use this three hour flight to chart out tunes for the next GIG. That's right and that's all the time. Yeah Yeah we're GONNA come back to that actually so then you go to. Um so which is kind of good because you start in Jazz Ban. You get your feet wet. Yeah I got more serious a- more serious with jazz as time went on like I said I I was in that Ohio Jazz Orchestra for youth with a lot of real great players from local high schools. I did that and then I went to a interlocken center for the arts for two summer programs and then ended up staying for my senior year of High School Eight of Boarding School. It's just an arts boarding school where everybody's there to get just better at their craft. That's along we. There was there for years senior year so I did two summers and then stayed around for my senior year of high school. Then I went to University of Miami. That's immersive though that. That's Oh man. It was great idea. Yeah it really was because I was with a lot of like minded people all the time you know aside from our on. Sambas that we were in our classes. We jam constantly. You know late at night early in the morning like you're with a bunch of people that just want to play and that just really head start you know just putting in that many hours playing those very fortunate to have been able to do that okay. So that got you prepped for. Yeah then I went to Miami. Miami was the only school I auditioned for. I You know I was. I was an electric bass player. Never really got into the upright thing. A lot of other schools that have jazz programs. Were a little bit more traditional big bandy. You know to where like I couldn't really just be an electric bass player and you go there. Really my options were Miami Berkeley or am I and Miami just seemed to be the right program at the time but you didn't even apply to the others. I didn't I just. I applied auditioned addition to Miami. Got Accepted and that was it. Bam So my choice easy. That's awesome just went yet just went for one school. Yeah what was that like? It's great you've completed your yeah. I did for years. I did take a year off after freshman year. I just kind of wanted like takes time off and process everything because I I've been going pretty intensely for a while with with You know the the the summer jazz program I was in and then interlocken for a year and then after that I did a cruise ship for for the summer. Then I went to Miami for freshman year and It was just a ton of intense shedding for years. And I really just kinda needed to take time away from that just process it so I took a year off after Freshman Year. I did a cruise ship Gig for six on states. Saved up some money practice my ass off but also you know partied quite a bit simple. Do on. Cruise ships brilliant. Yeah just kind of wanted just. I just needed a year to Kinda like SORTA CATCH UP PROCESS. Right relaxed a little bit as well. I feel just like a lot of information intel. It was really practicing a lot back then. To right Yeah so took that year off and then went back and finished and it was great. It was a great program a lot of great players. I played in a lot of bands and just took in a lot of information and it was. It was

You should do it for the exposure now. The reality is a lot of spot. Conferences and a lot of industry conferences in general won't actually pay speaks to attend. They'll expect that you're going to do it for the exposure. My situation I guess over the years I've spoken at a number of events of events and I kind of take the stance now that if you pay for my ticket my airline ticket and my accommodation then as long as I can do it within a day or two then I will probably come and speak at the event if I can if I don't have anything else booked but generally if people aren't going to the organizers not prepared to cover the flight ticket and and the hotel accommodation side of it then I probably won't speak unless it is a big opportunity because I've spoken to these events for a number of years. I feel I've got enough exposure certainly for me and probably for the brand but generally speaking if I can get to speak in an event and represent the brand then generally. I will do that if it works into the rest. The schedule so I think it really depends on your personal situation and your brand or your company situation. Do you need the extra exposure for you personally. Do you need the extra exposure for your brand. The other question I guess is. Is there such a thing as overexposure and in the case of these events I'd say yes there is because a lot of these you're seeing the same people speak again and again and oftentimes speaking about the same subject. I think that actually brings your impression or or your Your reputation down a little bit so I would encourage you if you do speaking events every year. Make sure that you're doing something unique and different in your speech but preferably I think you should be probably alternating events. I noticed by China for instance is big data every year for a number of years now but I always make sure I'm speaking about something different. So that's my opinion. If you get the chance to speak it's probably worth exposure as long as you're not denying yourself any other business or incurring any substantial
