Radio Shack (MM #3938)

"The NASA minute. With Kevin mason I spent way too many hours of the day on Amazon recently, looking for little electronic things, cables, clips for microphones, things like that. Stuff I would have found back in the old days at my local RadioShack store. Now I realize, in theory in name, RadioShack still exists online, but the RadioShack of our era of our growing up time doesn't exist anymore. It's not the same thing. And I miss it. I realize RadioShack was a weird place. One of the places where people got their first computer back in the 70s and 80s. And of course, what was their downfall becoming more focused on cell phones in the 2000s before they finally went bankrupt for like the second or third time? But it's very frustrating, looking for stupid things like cables for my computer when I got to do it on Amazon. At least when you walked into the RadioShack store, you had somebody who at least had some knowledge and you could test it for yourself. I missed those days, and sure, it's more of a remembering the good old days that really weren't so good. RadioShack still around in theory, and they're actually still supposedly some independent stores that say RadioShack on them. I gotta go try to find one of those.

"You shouldn't be paying a sex worker to have sex with a fourteen year old busey but let me talk about these tribe. People led me call. Cps the weird part about the fourteen year old to is like yo if that had been. And you see it with like you know. The teacher lessening the messing. the on. i'm like oh he's a child. This is wrong. What are you talking about. But the weird thing about the thing is if that had happened. What his teacher had Melissa his towel would he fight. If that teacher was a man right he'd be ready to fight him. But how's how's it different. If as a woman. It's not it's not different. There's no difference. The whole thing is is quite frankly Just a real booster shot for white supremacy patriarchy. Shout today chapelle for selling out. Finally i mean it didn't take them. It took them a while he is. He started he was like i'm not gonna sell out. And then he finally sold out. So congratulations because we cause me or friends so we can have tangents and shutout span. Because i had totally forgotten. The david chapelle did this. Dave chapelle took his black ass to oprah after he decided to quit his show and he was talking about the reason He was doing a joke about a a very little black face and then he was somebody who was walk like on working on that show laughing in a way he didn't like Should i fire this person and then it was like. I don't like one but people to be disappointed in me. And i don't you know i don't want to be upset with me if i make this joke and i'm sitting here like choke offensive. Dave chapelle for the last twenty nineteen two years has been leaving yawn. Think he don't understand things. This is from early in early. Two thousands he understands this. He doesn't like being told what to do. There is the difference dave to cause a very smart person. Because if you can get how. Maybe i should put his joke on television. 'cause i want bet like why people thinking this shit is cute to laugh at because he realized they were lap. Why why people were laughing at him and not with him. You can understand while maybe you should stop making these jokes. You know what you're doing. And i'm sitting like saab it in the car driving drawing homegrown so now a mad dave chapelle major thing like he didn't understand no he gets it very clear. Oh see here..

We gotta make laws not to discriminate against by air for job exactly. So it's like the whole model minority loki. They do it for Africa's folks who emigrate here. Because they do the same thing then. Black people can do it as the mighty who. Yeah i see people who faculty Yeah oh no. I like it. I like no like african black people because they know they come here to make themselves something yet because the blackness wasn't beat out of the s because of chattel slavery. But you don't want to have this conversation also. High africa was colonized meadows. It's like thank god part time this you know the tacitly of whiteness. You came to somebody else's country and said we're going to take over and fucking africa. We're gonna kick your white ashes out. Where where are we going to. Go back to your. "I listen to the shit. But one of the questions that i was like. This is fucking hilarious. Where's the lgbtq community when black women are kills. And i'm like so. Should they talk about the black trans one or the black glassman or tobacco bisexual women or the. I'm sorry did yang to fuck about the victims of ed buck but yes please talk. Like you're bringing it up to your. Don't care about black women. I'm like Hey hi sweetheart sis had met black men. Don't care about your as you might wanna cool it. And also i also think it all truthfulness like all these defenses of data pale defenses of like well. They weren't there for we. Don't all of this is just listen. Dave chapelle showed extreme lack of empathy. And you laughed at it. And you show initiating lack of empathy. It feels like you're just defending your of empathy literally. It is like fuck them gay people and it's like what is wrong with you. You're just defending your extreme lack of empathy. And and i get it. You feel bad because now people are like. Hey these are human beings that you're making fun of their feelings are hurt and instead of just like oh. I'm a city person. I should laugh at this. You've decided like well. Where would they win blah blah. And the truth of. The matter is in your decision to do this. All you're showing is how shiva person you are because if you weren't shitty person you know that gay and trans people have been fighting alongside black people for the entirety of the civil rights movement correct. They've been there just because you didn't want to recognize them or see them doesn't mean they weren't there they exist doesn't mean that they weren't there and that they were in by where were they will. Yeah they were there because in the sixties be engaged with a got killed and being black. He's got you as a lot of times. They which is black and sometimes there were white and they were just like. I'm just white person. Supporting black. people put secretly. I'm gay but i can't tell you when that 'cause i'll get killed but i'm here look just like me. It's like the thing like like guys i like. We know as a as a black woman. I know i have more privileged than a black trans woman in does not negate the oppression that i base by talking about somebody. A disabled black woman a transplant woman. A woman or the spectrum. They have more privileged than then. It doesn't out though pressure that i face by actually acknowledging that it does it like oppression is not a pie and it's like every time you just go. Y'all sound like why. I wish it was a fun. Acas pires delicious talking. There's so much oppression of everywhere. My president in a chocolate pecan pie this this so much depression. I can't.

"Anga jokes jason off. The woman has the joke about the qual- no the band directed the day band wreckage. Like a wooded has ron's into the ground i feel. Yeah so people are coming out of the woodwork. To defend dave chapelle and his fine because that community. Don't do nothing for some like so. There's this person named malcolm. Max says a person named james baldwin. There's three hour black women who who did the black lives matter movement. There's a lot of queer folks that you don't even know about that. Really stand for yo ass will be protesting and leading organizations leading marches. And y'all can't even just not re tweet a insensitive joke because you don't give a fuck about people who literally can more about you because they're still fucking black is like. Why do you think i'm sorry. They screw their blackness. What is what is wrong with. You will hear something that that kind of made me upset. So dave chapelle references wall but it was like you realize a black trans woman was one of figures he referenced. He references that the stonewall riots stonewall riots a black trans woman was at the forefront of those riots so how you referenced the so that's the thing that that really got to me i think in in it's something that's and somebody else said this as well too. I think it is easier for blacks as hetman. And you said this earlier is easier for black men to equate Gay in trans communities as all white because when they erase The blackened gay trans people were there. They also erase all the violence. They did to the black in the black gay and trans people as well as black. The black community is done so by just making them all white. They're just erasing the existence of black entrance of seeming black transplant. Gay people because they have been horribly horrifically violent to them for a very very long time and that erasure. She's an extension if anything of violence. Yeah so kind of like what the hell are you talking about. So rickey smiley and stephanie mills. Who i wish a house would fall on her. I'm sorry i don't know stephanie. Mills played Dorothy in the wiz. I hope what house falls on. Hayes versus bill cosby. You just be talking shit. It's like oh god you're myopic. View of oppression only blackness is starting to over. Cook my grits. But again you got the ricky smileys and the stephanie mills of the world. So they're up there like giving air to a tick-tock video from a lady. Bob name of dumb as getting mutt meal brat. Where she is like where is it. So she's doing this three hole three minutes..

"We don't want to spring. That anyone and i was like yeah i get it. I won't do it and as understandable because again their goal is to try to be as inclusive into have a space. That's safe for everyone where we still have fun. We still laugh and we still can talk about tough issues but we do it in a way. That's respectful of other people and respectful of other people's feelings. And that doesn't mean that we can't have funds deal unless you're fun is being a bigot. In which case the no. You can't be a bigot. you can't at all it's like what you do. It's so interesting to watch a lot. Like a dave chapelle and god knows wealth wanna fight white supremacy but you wanna use tools of white. Supremacy is so super weird. It is got weird. And so i have watched to queer folks talk about chapelle. Was you know my favorite lack auntie. Diamond from marshes plate. So she did so. She does a live youtube on friday. Friday Every friday and she talked about how it went into like. I think she was recording for like four hours and it was kind of like because it was someone in her comment. Because it was like we do it alive. People are responding and us where there was this one gay dude who literally wanted to literally wanted her to convince him that trans women have it more because in his mind he's like no gay men have it harder and it was like are you okay. And she let people in chat with like look. We're trying to help you like okay. You're just dumb and we're not doing this anymore. The other one was daniel I found them when they were basketball. Wives reviews on instagram. Though last wise review it was hilar- whole lehrer reassess. They just went live a few like a couple of hours ago. And it's kind of like if you're someone who enjoys comedy they're like everything like you'll have. You have no problem with chapelle. Meaning you'll be flying one. Well no and yeah. I'm not doing all this and she's like i don't there was a word. I gotta figure. Figaro a look back at the live because When i said i don't think he's do i think. Pose transphobic mike. I don't know they didn't say no. They said i don't know and it was. The word that they use was not transphobic. Goes trans something else i got. I was like bets very very smart so too wide literally. Queer folks come out and say this shit is not funny because of those jokes are in close proximity to violence towards us..

"I can make two to three gay comedians. Who are you know. Big names now. I think as as came we all and what we're seeing now. Is that trans. Comedians who exist are also now trying to join. The ranks of comedians and as every who've rank of comedian has joined the list had to shift so at one point. You could do a lot of jokes about things being quote unquote gay. And i and. I don't mean that in a way that it sounds like but at one point you could do that. You could do those jokes. You could do gay jokes and be offensive in that matter because there were no other gay comedians in the realm and there is no lane. It was just like. Oh you just run all over there and and it's like whatever and of course you're still offensive but there was no one there to to check on her call you on it. I know one was. There's no the gay. Comedians once get comedian started. We started seeing a lot of that pill back and trim back same thing for you know even jokes about black people i as more and more black. Comedians started gaining relevance we started seeing white means pilling back on that. Let's cenex jokes are at peeling back like you. Just as like george lopez becomes more and more prominent. You don't see as many white people trying to do like You know like. Let me do these jokes about these. Let's cenex people to wit. What ends up happening. I think is just saying the the pull away of is so you. Don't get to this dance in this lane anymore. And i think there's some comedians who feel like they should be able to tell jokes about anything. I can tell jokes about anything or anyone and if it's funny it doesn't matter but that's not the case is not an lane 'cause you and it's not even sometimes this so weird when i think about it because it's not about a quality is just i want to do. What do i do. And i see this happen to know white dude like because i saw the does not weird when i say but i saw the everybody jumping on. Everybody was steve rod. When it comes to dave chapelle as like no. He's not wrong. Israel is like no. You're not going to cancel it. No casualties white dues and like yes. So let me know. Last time you saw signs up from kramer when the last time you saw home but there was some dude who got on allen. Remember this this clown's name. He made asian jokes grand opening grand closing at saturday night. Live he. Busboy asked to get there. So it was kind of richard's right on right. It was like yeah. Let me know you say michael richards lately is like and that was before big big social media. He was out there like absolutely house. Like i felt like it was like two thousand ten. Diplomatic Pouch

"It's time for another installment of sea hunt. It still alive here on scuba shack radio. And this time. We're going back to season three episode thirty eight titled diplomatic pouch diplomatic pouch premiered on september twenty fourth nineteen sixty. Well in this episode. Mike is back in a latin american country named san miguel. His mission is to retrieve a diplomatic pouch from crashed american airplane. The show opens up with mike searching the wreck while his buddies on the surface appearing to be fishing as luck would have it. Mike find the pouch and starts to head to the surface. There's a great shot of the voight swim fins as he ascends but just as mike breaks the surface he's confronted with an armed boat of officials who are pointing their guns at him and asking him if he would be so good to come on board what to do. Quick thinking mike takes a fix on his position and drops the pouch. Who are these armed men. The guy in charge is colonel ramirez and he is the head of the coastal defense. He's cold and tough and goes over. Mike's gear with a fine toothcomb. Just then mike's friend. Paul alexander pulls up with their boat. He tells mikey sorry. That he drifted. The boat drifted off process that they are on vacation. And he's from dallas texas. Colonel ramirez tells them that they are not to dive on the downed airplane at an at the penalty by order of the dictator row. All as is that they will be immediately deported. They are welcome to fish. Just stay away from the airplane. So now paul and mike are on the bridget or boat and paul is upset about the diving when might tells him he found the pouch but he had to drop it. He says he took a position. And we'll be able to find it. But how will that be possible with the colonel watching pause. Got a plan. But mike wants to know i. Where did he get that phony. Southern accent well. Paul's plan involves dragging mike to a local cantina. The club kellyanne. Tae sign is flashing on and off as they enter once inside. They sit down in the bartender heads over the jukebox. A stereo phonic rockall roller and plays a record loudly before waiting on and paul. Something's the bartender nods and mike and pau get up and head for the back room. The ace of pulse leave is one of colonel ramirez. Deputy familiaux who calls the kernel. A pig who goes beyond the law familiar will fight with his fingertips to overthrow the hated dictator. The plane is to get. The plan is to get information from familiaux on whether the colonel is going to put a diver on the wrecked plane. Now the the scene shifts to mike and paul on the water and they're trying to get to the wreck but they're constantly being pursued by the coastal defense. Just then shots are fired from the defense boat. And they're colonel comes alongside and tells them that the penalty for diving on. The wreck is no longer deportation. It's death before they leave familiar hotels. Mike and paul that they are going to have another diver coming from the capital. Soon we now had back to the cantina. We're familiar comes in the bartender. Nods towards the back room in the room familiar hotels mike composite. The situation is desperate. what can they do. Mike knows he will be an underwater hitchhiker. But only familiar can drop a line over the side of the colonels boat you see. Mike can swim to the rack but he needs a ride back. Familiaux says it will be done. So now we have paul mike on their boat watching a coastal defence boat with its diver onboard and her headed out to the wreck plane. Mike tells paul if anything happens he needs to get out of there because he's too valuable. Paul reluctantly agrees as mike. Put the powder into his wetsuit top. Once the divers from the colonel Once the diver from the kernels boot jumps in. Mike is in the water swimming towards where he dropped the pouch. He sees the line. Familial has tossed over the side but now he needs to pop to the surface to get his bearings so he can find the diplomatic pouch just before the men on the boat turn towards mike. He slips beneath the surface a close call. Mike is now underwater searching and searching trying to find the pouch before the enemy divers season. Finally he spots the pouch intact and now he needs to get it out now. Here's where it gets a little strange. Mike is kneeling on the bottom looking at the patch. Trying to figure out and then like maybe how to open it or something. He's got a puzzled look on his face. His back is towards the plane wreck. As he's puzzling over the pouch the enemy divers spots him pulls out his knife and be lines towards mike as he tries to stab. Mike looks like the pouch gets in the way we are now witnessed to a classic underwater knife flight where mike wrestles do knife out of the bad guys hand takes out his own life and you guessed it cuts who's hose. The enemy divers forced to the surface and mike heads under the colonel's boat too high policies the diver surface in figures. There's a problem so he starts to head out. Mike is trying to figure out what to do with the diplomatic pouch when he decides to stick between his back and his doubles now. The colonel suspects that mike is with paul so he starts out in hot pursuit. Mike grabs the line and his underwater hitchhiking begins. The ride is challenging. You can see the strain on his double hose thins. Just as he's about to let go the boat slows down and pulls alongside. Paul familiar searches the boat and said no one is aboard. Paul says he just wants to go home as this is no place for a vacation. That colonel tells them to get out of his country. Once colonel leaves. Paul is despondent at the thought of losing mike just any. Here's mike call out. I think i heard him call pau. Alex i'm not sure. But as paul looks over the side mike tosses up the diplomatic pouch telling him. He forgot his laundry. Mike has yet again the day now. There wasn't any indication in credits as to where this episode was film. The plane wreck looked pretty authentic with the large propeller and debris. I wonder if this was. In the bahamas. So there you have it. Diplomatic pouch from season three of sea hunt.

Wet Notes - 9-27-21

"This is wet notes here on scuba shock radio for monday. September twenty seventh two thousand and twenty one first up. I want to congratulate tech clark and a dive locker. Podcast on celebrating the second anniversary for those who don't know about this. Podcast tech. Started this to help die professionals with various topics and techniques. But it's not just for dive professionals. I remember listening to the first episode. Way back in two thousand nineteen just before dima that year i've come to look forward to each weekly episode tech plans to keep the show going and has teed up a lot of great new content for the year year ahead. So i'd encourage you to check out the dive locker podcast. There's a lot of great information and perspective on things that hopefully will give you something to think about. Scuba shack is a proud patron of the dive locker. By the way tech also hosts a podcast titled the league of extraordinary divers. Where you can listen to some of the giants of our industry. Great job tech. Keep it coming now. I don't know what it is. But i seem to be a sucker for a message in a bottle story. So here's another one this time. The story involves a bottle that was washed up on the shores of the big island of hawaii. The bottle started his journey thirty seven years ago from japan and it was put in the water by school children. As part of an experiment in monitoring ocean currents the number of bottles were cast into the ocean in nineteen eighty-four from choshi highschool hawaii's about six thousand kilometers or four thousand three hundred miles from the launch point now. The bottle was found by abbie graham while her family was visiting a beach near hilo. It is estimated that about seven hundred and fifty of these bottles were tossed into the ocean between nineteen eighty four and nineteen eighty five. The last time one was found was in two thousand and two on kake. Jima island overall. The bottles have been found in seventeen. Different locations including okinawa the philippines china and even the west coast of the united states. I just get fascinated by these stories and often wonder just how many messages in bottles are out there in the ocean now. Last week we got an email from the clearly clearly came in resorts and it wasn't good. News clearly came in resorts include cobalt coast on grand cayman. Little came beach resort and cayman. Brac beach resort. The news informed us that the cayman borders will remain closed until two thousand twenty two. Now that's tough at a recent press conference to premier indicated that phase. Three of the original plan will start sometime. In february given the rise in cove in nineteen cases the resorts are now planning on opening on february. Fifth two thousand twenty two. Now this has been a really tough situation. If you remember way back in april i reported that the plan was to open in late april or early may two thousand and twenty one. It's been a long and difficult road for a lot of places. Surely the caymans are feeling abroad. We hope it gets resolved before october. Twenty twenty two trip yet. That on certain there's been a great deal of communication coming from tom. Ingram the president and ceo of dima the dive equipment marketing association regarding the two thousand twenty one show in las vegas. Tom unequivocal be states. That the show has absolutely no plans. Of cancelling now they did indicate that accordance with the local health mandates. Everyone will be required to wear a mask on the exhibit floor. There are several large past exhibitors. Who are forgoing the show this year causing some to question whether it should even take place. I know we've been getting a lot of surveys from our vendors as to whether we plan to go or not right now matt and i will be there. Tom indicated that it would be extremely difficult to cancel at this late date. Given the contracts that are in place and that if it were cancelled it would seriously impact demon's ability to put on these shows in the future. So we're looking forward to a successful show this year out in las vegas and finally today. I wanna talk about a piece of underwater camera gear that you might just want to consider. There was an article from sport diver magazine by john widow titled great camera accessories for underwater photography. It was a scuba lab review of the products that the staff took diving at alexander springs in central florida. First on the list was a sea life. Sport diver smartphone housing. Now that's pretty cool. I can remember my first. Underwater camera was sealife. Reef master with a whopping three mega pixels now. This housing will fit a number of iphones and android smartphones. The housing is bluetooth enabled and his rate it to one hundred and thirty feet. The sea life sport diver smartphone. Housing comes with a vacuum seal and duly alarms when you purchase the housing. You'll get a free app that will give you access to most of your phones. Usual camera functions also included is a red filter. And if that's not enough to housing allows you to put in those sealife life color changing moisture. Munchers he i remember those now. The housing isn't cheap. It retails for two hundred ninety nine dollars and ninety five cents. Us but if you wanna travel light and still get some great underwater shots of your adventures check out the c. Life sport diver smartphone housing at sea. Life fash cameras dot com. Well that's it for this edition of wet notes here on scuba shack radio.

Pittsburgh Wants You to See Constellations

"When astronomer diane turn shack move to pittsburgh in nineteen eighty-one she noticed. Something big was missing from the night sky. When i grew up in new england you could just walk outside and look up and see the milky way. But when i arrived in pittsburgh the sky had started to decline in quality. Still she says at the time her students at carnegie mellon university were very familiar with the milky way they knew about stars and constellations. That is not the case anymore forty years later. I have to explain what the milky way is and describe what it looks like in a show pictures and they think those pictures are fake. Because of light pollution major constellations can be totally invisible in cities. The pittsburgh city council is now trying to do something about it with the help of scientists like turn check. It passed a dark sky. Ordinance last week to reduce light pollution. This city is going to replace streetlights with warm tone. Led lights and they're also going to install shields so that late doesn't travel up what we're trying to do is cut out the light at the blue end of the spectrum because blue light scatters more easily than red light in the atmosphere rate. That's why the sky is blue. So blue light scatters everywhere. It doesn't stay where your lighting and to measure progress. She has some help in the higher ups in august. The astronauts on the international space station took some pictures of pittsburgh for on a clear night. And that's the before shot. The astronauts are gonna continue to take pictures of pittsburgh so we will have during pictures and after pictures. Terzic believes that as the sky's get darker more people will look up. In wonder that means more people more children will be able to see it and the benefits of being connected to half of our universe. I can't overstate that. It's a spiritual thing to feeling of connection with the universe she's hopeful it will peak young people's interest in the stars above and encourage them to pursue subjects such as

Nike CEO John Donahoe's Lessons on Servant Leadership

"What star. John rains that i am most associate with you. Which is servant leadership. And i'd love if you could describe your philosophy on servant leadership especially try to conceptualize it for much smaller organizations. What does it mean to serve leader as a ceo of a bunch of ceo's around the table how should they think about how that philosophy conform away they run their business so when i talk about servant leadership. It's frankly the the way. I learned to lead because i actually learned the lead in partnership a ban where you aren't really empowered to do anything to you have to earn the respect and the followership of others. You guys don't have that as founders. But i do think you'll find that. Many of the best leaders exhibited the principles servant leadership. And i just say how do i serve serve. The purpose of the organization serve the customers served. The employees serve the communities in which we operate in a jim collins called at level five leadership other people call from things. But it's when someone it's not about the leader it's about what it is. We are trying to accomplish right and some of the antithesis of what's hot silicon valley at different times the narrative. Always around the all-powerful founder. They're all powerful leader. And i think there's actually very few examples where that actually great sustainable companies come out of that my leadership role model for large parts of my career with phil jackson of the chicago bulls. Now it'd be steve kerr for your younger and would always struck me. He was able to do is get people who actually were better than he was klay. Together he got michael jordan. Scottie pippen dennis. Rodman caster characters to win six championships. It got shack kobe to play together. You look at you. Look at steve kerr the warriors right. Now he's getting. Somehow he's getting steph curry klay thompson and kevin durant andrew mongering all vying to something greater and they win i view with how do you build high performance teams of top talent to win and servant leadership is part of it.

Wet Notes 8-30-21

"This is wet notes here on scuba shack radio for monday august thirtieth two thousand and twenty one. Well we have certainly had our fill of extreme weather lately just last week here. In connecticut we face the challenges of tropical storm on re just barely below hurricane strength and at the last minute it shifted east and we avoided the brunt of the wind rhode island wasn't as fortunate and now we have item a cat for hurricane hit louisiana. Extreme weather is now the norm. The news keeps getting worse. Recently there was a study published by nicholas bars from the potsdam institute for climate impact research and that was that the gulfstream could be varying towards irreversible collapse. Now the gulf stream is part of the atlantic meridional overturning circulation or a. m. Oc this circulation takes warm salty. Water from the tropics moves in north and then takes the cold water south. The study finds that the circulation is at its weakest in one thousand years. So what happens if the gulfstream collapses that will dictate extreme cold for parts of north america and europe. Is the collapse imminent well. That's not an easy question. Answer it could be decades away but as we have seen things are happening a lot faster when it comes to climate change not only will the disruption of the gulfstream resort in colder north american temperatures. It is predicted that there will be a rise in sea level disruption of the monsoon patterns and impacts on the amazon rainforest. An aunt arctic ice sheets. The study concluded that is that this is all a result of human endorse induced climate. Change in may of this year. I talked about a project out on lake. Tahoe called cleanup lake. That project had an ambitious goal of cleaning over seventy two miles of the mountain lake. So i thought i would give it a quick update on how the work is progressing. Now these numbers come from the cleanup delake website. Cleanup delete dot org as earlier this month. Team of divers has removed an amazing eight thousand. One hundred and twenty two pounds of trash were three hundred and three thousand six hundred eighty four kilograms and covered about twenty two miles or thirty four kilometers of coastline. There update indicated that they have completed seventy four dives over twenty seven days of diving. The diver's consumed two hundred and eighty six cylinders of air. Today there have been eighty one volunteers who have delivered two thousand six hundred and eleven volunteer hours. Now i'm not sure if they're on pace to meet their objectives but that's not always the measure success. The amount of continuing effort is what really counts. Keep up the good work guys. The annual boston sea rovers clinic for this year is just one month away. The two thousand twenty clinic happened just a couple of weeks. Before the corona corona virus lockdowns took effect. We really didn't know how serious things were then. Now as we continue to emerge from the pandemic the show may just have the distinction of being the last face to face. Scuba show in the world before the pandemic and the first face-to-face scuba show in the world post pandemic monty. And i were at the last meeting. And everything's proceeding for the october. First and second show the show will follow state and local mandates and as the days pass by. We are all hoping that the show will go off his plan. This year shows moved from the traditional march date to october as a result of the pandemic that you'd be a great time to enjoy some early fall weather in new england. It'd be great to get together and diving is certainly a social sport. Do you miss dive training magazine. I sure do. I think i've re reread all the back issues. We have a good shop at least three times. So what's happening with the publication. Well i reached out to catherine castle garcia the editor to find out the latest catherine informed me that they hope to be publishing again in the fourth quarter of two thousand and twenty one. Now that's some good news. The fourth quarter is not that far away. And i'm certainly looking forward to dive training magazine hitting the streets and finally here on wet notes. I wanted to give you an update on the situation with dutch springs. If you remember last time. I reported that the property owned by stu jill school had been sold to trammell crow texas developer. Who's planning to build a large warehouse facility on the property. The initial word was that dutch would shut down after the season while a lot has happened in the last couple of weeks i there was a petition that garnered over three thousand supporters to keep the place open and as we know petitions can only go so far then there was support from patty professional association of diving instructors patty due to white paper outlining the economic benefits dutch brings provides as a diving venue. Patty estimates that because dutch exists. It helps to generate three point. Four billion annual retail sales in the northeast they tag the economic benefit to bethlehem at thirty four point five million as for tax revenue. The paper indicates that about ninety. Eight point nine million is generated for state and local taxes and northeast and about two point one million for bethlehem in addition to patty support. The lehigh valley planning commission has called the proposal of disaster for the quality of life in the lehigh valley while it seems that there a great deal of opposition to maybe very little that can be done to stop the effort. One positive. I that i did see. Was that trammell. Crow was indiscretions with local officials to offload the fifty off lou to fifty acre quarry for community use. Just how would you get to acquire if they build the warehouses. I don't know while the saga is far from over. I would expect that we won't see. Dutch brings open for the twenty twenty two dive season but his al michaels once said. Do you believe in miracles. Well that's it for this edition of wet notes. Proof of Guilt

"It's time for another installment of sea hunt. It's still alive here on scuba shack radio. In this time we are headed back to season two for episodes. Thirty three titled proof of guilt which premiered exactly sixty two years ago today on august sixteenth. Nineteen fifty-nine in this episode. Mike is in the hawaiian islands where he is working for. A manufacturing company testing out underwater motion picture and television cameras in the opening scene. He is diving with huge film camera. The plankton is up cutting visibility but is also bringing in fish and the man eating sharks we see a number of white tip circling and they're getting closer and closer as mike sees their cold is they're getting too close for comfort so mike decides to head to the shallows when he gets to the pierre he sees a note under water on the slate that says come up. Mike tells us that there is greater threats up there than the sharks when he gets out of the water. Mike is met by lieutenant. Dave cal cal. Coa of the honolulu police department he asks why the new while dave says it wasn't from him. The camera moves to a woman who says it was from her. her name. is sandra otani or sandy. She says she put the no down. There you see. She owns now lua island where she grows. Cultured pearls offshore. Someone is stealing her pearls. And she needs. Mike's mike's help and his cameras to get the evidence that dave needs to arrest them might tell sandy that he won't give her the camera as they only go with him. Sandy smiles until mike's that she wants to go with the cameras that might smooth operator. The scene now shifts to the beach on sandy's island where both sandy and mike are gearing up to assure dive out to the pearl beds. Sandy shows mike the pearl beds in his getting angry underwater as she finds the broken oyster shells as they are walking out of the water. Mike tell sandy that it is the perfect place for scuba. Hit and run. Sandy tells mike that some of the pros have been growing for thirty years. Mike her exactly how they cultivate the pearls. Sandy says that it's a secret that came with her father from japan but since they won't but since she won't tell them the secret should make it up to them with the best dinner he ever had now. The next morning mike is ready to set a trap for the pro robbers. He's hiding in the rocks with a pair of binoculars in his full scuba rig looking for any suspicious activity. He spots a boat but he doesn't see the divers go into the water on the other side of the boat. He does however see their bubbles and heads out with his camera to catch them in the act at the pro beds. Mike hides behind a rock with the cameras. The divers approach as they start to rob the beds. Mike starts to film but he gets careless. He says the sound of the camera alerts. The divers wanted a bad guy circles around in surprises. Mike they get into a fight. The other bad guy grabs the camera and pulls out the film now while the underwater fight is going on. Sandy was watching from the beach and she suspects trouble and his racing to the pro beds with her boat. The bad guys rip mics regulator out of his mouth but as they are scared off by the sound of sandy's boat. Mike is left helpless. Miraculously mike doesn't drown he recovers we see some eagle raising the background as he heads to the surface he's blowing bubbles all the way up we now see the camera resting on the bottom. Mike struggles back on. The boat is gasping for air. A sandy asks him if he is all right in the next scene. Now we see mike lying on a chair. Sandy's giving him not some tea. He says he doesn't want anymore and starts to work on a plan to catch the bad guys lieutenant dave. Sandy says she wants to let them have the pearls. Because they're not worth mike's life. But mike says it's not about the pearls anymore. It's a personal grudge. He needs dave's help to put them on tv now. Mike is going to use the underwater television camera to catch the. The's he shows. Dave how it's going to work as he pans across the island. Just mike points to camera towards dave in. Sandi dave says hey look at the prettiest girl in blue island has sandy strikes. Oppose the camera. And she says she's the only girl on lulu island as mike looks to take off underwater. Sandy gives him a big kiss for luck. And mike says he's never had any better luck back underwater with the tv camera. Mike is waiting for all three villains as they are. Now jumping in the water to steal the pearls but this time one of them has a spear gun. Mike has the tv camera pointed at the pro beds. But there's a problem. The bad guys are coming from the wrong direction and they're not on tv. The ambush mike. Who's only hope is to move maneuver them into the frame of a camera. Chaos prevails as they fight and slash at one. another finally might get them to the pearl beds. The spear gun is fired and strikes the bed. Fortunately sandy is watching and as yells to dave look at this cast off now. The cops are headed to the fight during the fight. Mike's left arm is slashed but he continues fighting pulling a regulator out of one of the bad guys. Mouth just then. He sees the to hawaiian police officers free diving or swimming trucks. And says they look like angels with the odds now even justice prevails and the bad guys lose again in the final scene near back on the shore of an allure island. Mike's arms bandage. Dave asks in the. He needs a ride back to honolulu. Sandy tells dave that mike is going to be on vacation. Dave says the sandy. Nobody likes a cop. Sandy says she will give him the best testimonial but also gives mike. Another big kiss to which mike replies that is the best testimonial in my life. I'm not exactly sure where this episode was filmed for the top side scenes but it sure does look like hawaii however you never know when it comes to television or the movies. The part of sandy was played by nobu mccarthy and kendrick played lieutenant dave calcutta and here's one final interesting tidbit. This episode was remade in the nineteen eighty-seven version of sea hunt and it was titled pearl beds. And just so you know. I'm still trying to get my hands on that. Amazon Alexa Gets New Voices, Including Actors Melissa McCarthy and Samuel L. Jackson

"This month. Alexa is going to sound a little bit. Different on july fifteenth the tech giant rolled out an update to its digital voice assistant to include a second voice option. As you know amazon's assistant typically has like a feminine sounding voice with this update. You can change that to a more masculine voice setting this all up his quite simple. You just say the assistant's name followed by quote. Change your voice and quote but that's not all there's an additional wake word you can use in place of alexa. That new word is ziggy Basically it works the same way instead of saying the primary name of amazon's digital assistant You can say ziggy instead. If you're a fan of gigi and you've never tried to swap out the wake word and you kind of want to try it out. Anyway you have some other choices to You can use amazon. You can use echo or you can use computer And the way to do this is really simple. Just like with the change. Your voice option. You can make a query to the assistant and say change the wake word to whatever you want Another way to do this too is open up the app for the voice assistant go to the menu. Select your settings than device settings. Then you go to the device that you want to update with this new wake word and then you choose the when you want and that's it now if you don't want either of these options for voices you can actually add a little bit of celebrity flare After introducing an option awhile. Back to add actor. Samuel jackson's voice to queries amazon is much similar offerings featuring actress melissa mccarthy an nba legend shaquille. O'neal so the way it works is you kind of ask them directly as you would amazon's digital assistance. You might say hey shack. Tell me about the weather. Hey samuel Tell me about the news today. And it works exactly the same way and they will read everything in

"As the solution to humanity's basis attributes like greed and selfishness. That's why so many view it is a vehicle for self-improvement. Being open to different ideas can help you become a better person but it can sometimes leave you vulnerable. Because there are some who you spirituality as a smokescreen while they indulge their own darkness people like julius shack now. Julius took advantage of the political and social upheaval of the nineteen sixties and seventies warning that the turmoil was a signal of the end times. He amassed a following of devoted believers in suburban connecticut calling his group the work promising protection during the impending apocalypse. Julius is followers did whatever he asked eventually. He convinced them that he was god. However by nineteen seventy six. Julius stop courting publicity. He quit making appearances after the public didn't respond to his divinity claim. In addition to being ridiculed concerned parents of young members raised alarms in the press. Because he couldn't manipulate the public or the media. Julius turned his attention to his followers over whom he had complete control and the more negative press the work faced the more his followers felt his wrath. Julius temper was nothing new to members of the work. they often the outlet for julius as righteous fury. Anyone could be targeted at any moment for any reason or more often than not for no reason at all one night in the early nineteen eighties. Julius called families to the stage mothers fathers and children lined up shoulder to shoulder glancing nervously at each other when julius turned back to face them. A leather belt hung menacingly from his fist. He ordered them all to strip from the waist down on a stage in front of the entire group they did as he commanded likely hoping their obedience might bring mercy but on that night. Julius showed no grace one by one. Julius went down the line savagely beating each one blow after blow with the belt

"This is what notes here on scuba shack radio for sunday. July eighteenth two thousand and twenty one first up. Today is an update on the upcoming boston. Sea rovers clinic. Historically the clinic was held in the early part of march just before the start in the northeast dive season. The show actually happened in march. Two thousand twenty just before the country shut down it was probably the last scuba diving show before cove. It wasn't possible to conduct the clinic in march. Two thousand twenty one as we were still at a high point of covy nineteenth spread infections so the decision was made to move the show to the first weekend of october in two thousand twenty one fall in massachusetts. That should be pretty neat. Tickets are on sale now for the boston. Sea rovers to day clinic in danvers massachusetts. Right now the early bird special is still available. You can attend the daytime. Saturday and sunday clinic along with the saturday night. Film festival for seventy five dollars. You can pick and choose your options and that's a pretty good deal. Don't wait check out the boston. See your oversight for all the details and get your tickets now now. Here's something new to help you with your fish identification. It's something called name that fish dot com name. That fish dot com was created by a guy named jake easterling and he is the co founder of a company called scuba. School botox mission is to reduce the cost and time requirements to monitor coral reefs by using artificial intelligence autonomous underwater vehicles and citizen science. I guess and of course this work. Jake developed a database of fish and came up with the idea of taking people's underwater video footage and identifying fish in the video. If you go to the name net fish dot com website you can view short video on what the finished product looks like. Jake also has assured Tutorial on how to make a submission the site says it will accept dot m. p. four emo v dot j. peg in png files. Max file. Size is one hundred megabytes and must be at least seven hundred. Twenty p or higher processing time is one to five days the more fish more processing the rare species. The longer it takes to verify and if your quality isn't that good don't be don't need more time to process. There's a little bit of disconnect on pricing. Jake says into in his short tutorial that you can set any price you think is best but there's also a button that says it costs three ninety nine in any event. Why don't you just go out and take a look at name. That fish dot com. I recently hadn't really interesting email. Come across my desk a few days ago and it was from reef divers. If you're not familiar with reef divers they operate with the clearly came in resorts. Cobol coast on grand came and the little cayman beach resort and the beach resort. They're known for their valet diving. Well reef divers is expanding our operation in the caribbean to turks. Keiko's now they are partnering with east bay resort on south. Keiko's it looks like they plan to be up and running there by late. August east bay resort sits on a mile long beach and boasted. Every room has a beach view. To get south goes she'll need to fly into providence jalis and then you can take either a short air hop over or board the ferry. It's not that long of a ride resort officer an all inclusive option. That seems pretty good reef divers outstanding operator in the caymans so sure that you can look forward to superior valet service from nemo turkson. Keiko's as well so many places to go diving. What it dilemma. Just about every week. Get an update from michael light. Any contains various tips and tricks for better underwater photography plus they also provide some product updates but also in this email is some other interesting information last week. They introduced me to an organization called washed ashore and the articles title said using discarded plastic to save the ocean. Now washed ashore. It is a five. Oh one three or c three nonprofit arts and environmental education organization aimed at bringing to light the world's plastic pollution problem. Well how well washed ashore started by angela ponzi who is a lifelong lover of the ocean and after the death. Her husband from a brain tumor. She turned to the ocean for healing. What she also found was that the ocean needed healing as well so she turned her artistic talents into creating sculptures. That are marine-related using the plastic. That is washed up ashore and they do some spectacular sculptures. I was also amazed by the fact that they have over fourteen thousand volunteers. Working with washed ashore. These are not small sculptures. Either you can check them out at washed ashore and take a look at some of their work. You will be amazed well. I'm sure that we've all heard about the billionaires who are competing to go into space amazing stuff for someone who grew up at the start of the space race in the nineteen sixties. But there's also another race going on and that's the race to build the world's deepest pool at the top of the list. Right now is deep dive. Dubai located in nod al sheba. Which is fifteen minutes from downtown dubai. It's an amazing sixty meters deep. That's one hundred ninety seven feet and contains fourteen million liters of water or three point. Seven million gallons. The pools constant thirty degrees celsius or eighty six degrees fahrenheit. It is team doesn't abandon sunken city. Now that's pretty cool. They have an onsite hyperbaric chamber restaurant gift shop and dive shop. Put this in perspective. The other deep pools around the globe include. Why forty in italy at forty two point one five meters deep spot in poland at forty five point four meters and there's either one coming online or it's online and crom cornwall england. That's called blue vis at fifty meters deep. I wonder if there's some kinda limit on just how deep can build a pool. I'm sure we'll be amazed and finally today. Here's another message in a bottle story. this time. It comes from michigan. It seems that jennifer dour the owner and operator of nautical north family adventures of scuba snorkeling. Glass bottom boat company was cleaning a windows on her glass bottom boat in the cheboygan river when she spotted the bottle inside. The bottle was a message from ninety. Five years ago it read will the person who finds a bottle return his paper to. George morrow cheboygan michigan until where it was found. The message was dated november. Nineteen twenty six. Jennifer posted this on social media and george morrow daughter michelle who's now under seventies reached out michelle indicated that her father was probably eighteen years old when he put the message out. There sounds like the battle didn't travel very far. However now i wonder just. How many messages in bottles are out there. Well that's it for this edition of wet notes here on

The Fox Sisters: A Mysterious Haunting

"Today story begins in december of eighteen. Forty seven when the fox family moves to the rural community of hides new york the plan to build their own home in the new town but the winter is pretty brutal so the construction comes to a stop in the meantime. John and margaret fox rent a modest house near the town centre and move in with their two young daughters. Fourteen year old maggie and eleven year old kate. This rental house is small like the four of them have to share a single bedroom. The parents asleep in one bed in maggie in kate and another and while it's kind of tight the fox's are relatively happy. John is a reformed alcoholic with a new outlook on life. Margaret is a super sweet mother who lives for her children as for maggie and kate. They're pretty much glued at the hip so they're never bored. Most nights in the new house are pretty unremarkable. After doing some chores and blowing out the candle they slip into their beds and fall asleep to the peaceful sounds of the river nearby. Of course there are other sounds too you know. The standard creepy sounds that come with living in a tiny shack in the middle of the woods. The wind howling the creaking of old trees. The pitter-patter of creatures scuttling through the night but on a cold march night. The fox's wake up to something different something other worldly. There's a sudden wrapping on the walls thumping on the ceilings and vibrations all around them naturally. Everyone's a little alarmed so they re light the candle and investigate this sound has to have a source an open window rattling an animal trapped inside a woodpecker on the roof. It could be any number of things but after checking every corner of the room and popping their heads outside. They don't find anything out of the ordinary. Which is a little weird sure. But it's the middle of the night in everyone's tired. So john margaret maggie and kate all go back to bed hoping that the sounds will just go away on their own. But that's wishful thinking.

There might be a little bit of overlap and likely that overlap is gonna come from mls players because it is the summer and you've got transfer window open you've got guys going into preseason camps trying to earn their way like for instance. He said brian reynolds not here because joe's marino doesn't generally play younger players so they want brian reynolds to beat at roma from the jump with the new manager to make sure he has a chance to get into the team otherwise he's going to be working From behind a couple other names in that scenario where cameron carter vickers gotta figure his cup situation. But like a commercial actor would get hot. See him in like three or four hours. Well in this one commercial, he's a single dad, and then he's married with the kids on this for the eggos commercial. Like, why are we using this guy? Anyone could do this job shack into Papa John? But he's also into the cruise ships and generals. Are we believing why we believing this? Yeah. It's almost counterintuitive. He's spreading himself a little too thin. Yes. Pardon the pun, and my wife does this. So they're still a relative poverty. I mean, there's still sure compared to rich, but the poor of today are much less so than a hundred and fifty years ago or or fifty much better off in that time for it in the United States, the poor poor poverty is based on sort of a mean now what that means is that, you know, there's there's a wage that's half the people make more than that happy the media. Not the mean. Alright whatever the median, and how many times we got to go through the statistical averages are hardy. Three of them at least. And you know, the that means the poverty rates based on that. Well, it shouldn't be it should be based on can you live on this Reiter? What what really define they need a better definition of poverty than what somebody else makes a living wage. I don't know what that means. And you know, the the it's very difficult to know. And when you ask people, basically, they just want to make more money than they currently make and work less, and it's poverty in the United States is a joke compared to what real poverty looks like they're very poverty in Nigeria very few people in states living in shacks with dirt floors. Okay. Right. Yeah. With no running water or sanitation or anything like that. That's what poverty looks like pizza. We are you going to be extreme poverty. Are you going to a well with a with a container to get some water every day? Yeah. I would say you have a well. I gotta walk all the way down to the river. That's right. Well, some people do some people choose to live this way. They wanna they wanna see what it's like to rough it for a while. At my house. We homesteaded for about ten years. We grow our own pigs. We had a big garden we heated with wood still he did a bunch of things. And that was to see what this was like, and I can tell you. It's a whole it's hard to live that way. But it it takes a lot of preparation you. Gotta split all your would ahead of time. You can't do that. You can't just wait. So anyway, going on here.
