Episode 82: With New York Yankees Reliever/Dark Wizard Adam Ottavino
"The. Tied at five to go. The body of these Aaron Boone the leader his first bad of the game. He's. Just to the first what's up? What's happened? Welcome to another dishing of the short porch. I'm your host hubs alongside be my co-host. The Colosseum cloud the veep. God Tommy smokes Tomsk belly. What's going on give me all those nicknames? So now, you're going to you're going back at me. I'm just being difficult as per usual. Yeah. You know, what the next time? And that was sad amount of you know, so much for coming on. Guy. We're gonna have CAD. All. And it's gonna be I'm sure we'll be finished ever. I one, oh, it'd be when I meet a Purdy said that Tom. I'll just goes. He's very guy. So he's very surreal words have never been sure with about you. I think that's why the question he thought. Oh, that's why news here. That's the real. The show. More die and a regular season baseball be an hazier especially jealous and the IMO, basically. His time in that room. Thought it was in like he's going to be thought. It was also love that. He's from New York Yankee fan. Does this show? And hopefully, there was no swing. Is that fell slider game? Just like, here's a gal. Carried the game. Wasn't that? Good. What's that? I just wanna see in a moment. Game on Saturday. You'll have video of that. We are going to get on. Sheriff will have to barbershop that was very interesting. Actually. It is time works. Thank you for explaining hubs to our. We'll be back Monday. Hopefully, no more interest. Please. God. Please see. And then I was like, oh, it's it's opening day. We just missed it. Like welcome to baseball season. I guess I didn't know until last night. My we play card. Everybody's play cards. We call Tuesday cards exclusive group busiv group and after the game. We're watching some college basketball just going through my app to see what's going on like some spring training on. And then it said the next day five thirty in the morning. I'm like, oh my God, that's the Japan game. And that was eleven thirty nine. That's when I knew there was a game. So I set my alarm I woke up I wanted to see each euro last games ever gonna play. So I stayed. I woke up at five thirty in the morning watch verse three innings went back to bed. Mike, Mike fires is pushing for the as we fucking hate him. 'cause giancarl STAN hall him. He's a scumbag, and he was getting lit up. I woke up again an hour and half later. He fucking grand slam the Domingo's Santana, which is cool. I bet on the Mariners. They won. It was cool. But not exactly the most enticing, you know, the Mariners who traded, you know, a good chunk of their guys and the Oakland A's who apparently the Yankees rival. But. Mike fires race. I wasn't really too too enticing to match up. I think it's crazy that you will woke up for it like gambled on it. So that gave me interest, and I want this each euro. It's cool. I'll watch the highlights and I- pitching. He's the other Japanese lefty that they signed the that's pretty well Najan making your major debut, and it's just Japan. Yeah. It's like I mean, just like never left, right? So we'll see like if it's would you be more nervous. The all thousand percent learner then like pitching in the states. Yeah. Yeah. Because not only are you trying to win over your new team the Mariners, but you still have all your Japanese fans watching to it's as nerve wracking possibly be. So I was pretty crazy. There's another game today. And the craziest part also which Casey point out both teams. I think are going back and playing spring training games after this. I mean, I guess it makes sense. But that takes. Almost forget this even happened. I you don't really know what happened. And if you do know what happened you're gonna forget that there. They're probably people who didn't know happen. Yeah. For sure and this will be a full day and half. Breaking news guys baseball season started. He started. So let's get some Yankee news might trout. Locked up twelve years four hundred and thirty million dollars. Angels. Looks like Bryce Harper's attempt to tamper did not work at all. He's me slickest and worst recruiting tour ever. The worst glue Mitro did not listen to anything. He said four thirty seems light with my trout going to be honest. I think he's worth a lot more than that. How crazy is it that Mike chart is so good that he got basically half a billion dollars shattered records for biggest American sports contract ever. And nobody is like he's overpaid. Not one person there's some people who say he's worth about that. But some people, you know, sending needs more. Nobody's saying oh, man. I can't believe they overpaid him that much. He's that good. Yeah. It's what's four thirty five by twelve. What's that per year? Thirty five point thirty five. Yeah. I mean, he's kind of like LeBron James where like LeBron mix what he makes twenty five thirty million whatever. But if you actually like during his prime he's worth fifty like IBM could've probably seventy five. There's no salary said if there's no salary cap if LeBron had played in Europe where there is no salary cap. Like, the starting point would have been like seventy million dollars. So it's great subtract similar way. Good for the angels. Trout. Kluge doesn't give fuck about you know, winning a World Series any of that. Because that's not going to happen with the angels. Could. Okay. I mean, there's a chance within one of these twelve years. I guess they'll have one playoff run aren't like a historically joke of a franchise. Also stuck in the AL west though Astros are just going to be good forever true. But I mean, they were they were the biggest pests for awhile and the two guys that's the Stein's Garret Anderson opposite. They're all. I'm just saying there is going. Precedent there to a degree. It's a complete joke of a team that has no winning history. Yeah. I tweeted I'm just upset that I do not like this new trend of great players not becoming Ke's. It's not great. I rather. It's it is good though that they can't come Red Sox either. Like, no one are not. Oh, I was kind of scared about that. That can't happen. You know, trout God forbid, although people have always said the Phillies with him. I do like how he just fucking fuck face face. Fuck the Phillies like they just because they always thought they were shoe in for him. Like almost like we were for Harper. It was a very similar thing. It was almost more for trout from the area. Jersey native was Westfield Coast Eagles games like every fucking Sunday. So I don't know put the reason I bring this up, obviously is because also Alex bregman six years one hundred million a lot of people getting locked up. I'll quick you know, that Mike trout was almost Yankee, you know, that draft story. Remind me remind I'm looking up. I know they had a pick. So after the comp after the compensate, Tori, maybe for not signing Garrett Cole the before the keys were to pick twenty nine in the first round in two thousand nine after extending qualifying offers to to share and k rod and lose them free agency had the twenty fourth and twenty fifth picks up Heimer called his heart. Skipping a beat when angels took an outfielder from a high school in Texas with the twenty four th pick for a moment. It looked like the angels didn't wanna take a chance on trout. So they thought that he was going to follow them up. Heimer is devastated. When angels took trout with the twenty we're going to take second consecutive heights Clough field therefore picks later. Thank you took a heist cloth from at their own called sleeve, flip Eka. Yep. So I'm pretty sure the angels guy that pick because inky sign to shit or because they extended the share overcame Yankee. So yeah, they were close to getting my China. No. He's painful thing. I didn't need to hear that. Yeah. I've always thought curry in the Knicks type deal. That's now that but it's even worse because. It's like the almost as if that would be if the warriors picked a three point shooting point guard, and then they also pick stuff curry, right? You know what I mean? That's what the they picked cloud fuel there. And they picked another outfielder. It's insane. Also nuts. How late in the first round. He went. Yeah. So I mean, the keys are among twenty five teams. Probably that said, Nope. Not this guy. Not the guy who's pretty much the best baseball player to ever live. They never on a shot. Right. No. I'm saying oh the teams before. That just like had all the chance to the world to take him. And he's the best place. Best baseball player to ever live your tires right now at the age of twenty six years, then he's a whole Famer. He's all right now, he just died or just retired. He's all famous. That's good. His numbers. Are they they stack up with anybody? He's ridiculous. But the reason I bring this up, obviously is because you know, the big elephant the room Aaron judge time lock them up. I think a hate the longer. Wait the long waiting next off season after he wins, the MVP and hit sixty five home runs sixty eight federal prediction for the year. This is like they're in a good spot right now where he's gotten a year and a half of great baseball under his belt. He's just getting better. And better, you know, not that we take spring into account or anything. But if you look at this fucking guy in spring, he looks like a cyborg hitting everything, and he he's got you wanna lock in your face your franchise. They've been doing it with Severino Hicks now, obviously there is the extension curse that we've been talking about. Yes. Don't want to deal with that. But it's being talked about what would you give him? My starting point would be. So he hasn't entered arbitration yet, which gives the Yankees a little bit of an advantage there because whatever you give him if you were to extend them right now, the first three years he getting so much more than what he normally would be getting right? So that allows that number to get a little lower my in my head. I'm not good at this. You know, not a GM, whatever. But I through seven for two hundred around my head that seemed like a number to start at other people like let's give them ten years. Find by any number you give. So the reason I actually don't wanna do it. Now, I think it's too. I don't want to have as we start a new season on Joe speed dealing with contract negotiations. I don't want that to be part of to play baseball. I think he said that he's like it's either going to think he had said it's gonna get done now or the or the off season. He's like I'm letting my people handle at which is fine. And there's no reason to go she ate during the season. That's a stupid. I'm saying get it done now or the offseason, but I'd love to get it down done right now. I'm trying to think of I mean. Would only make six hundred thousand dollars. I would like I don't want. I know he's gonna end up Anki legend. But I don't really wanna be paying Aaron judge a lot when he's like thirty five thirty. I don't think he's I don't care. I don't think his body's going to age. Great just a first baseman or D H. Yeah. I would pay him a lot, dude. He's absolutely free about to be twenty seven right? Yeah. That's why I said seven years. For the Yankees. That's a number that work. I don't know if that's an Aaron judge number. But I'd go eight because then you have him through his age thirty four season. I'd say eight years. Two to twenty. Yeah. That works for me hundred percents. So like, I bet. Mookie Betts turn that number down eight for twenty last off-season. He said, no he's getting he's gonna ask for three fifty and that was before an MVP season. Yeah. I mean Red Sox fans can pick her with us all they want. I'm taking judge every single time. Over Mookie Betts, just I just think he's the better baseball has even close hasn't even come close to reaching his peak in my opinion. And I think that's has. I think that's his last season. That's the best you'll get from vets. And it's not to say that can't continue. But I think judges peak is just so much higher than his. I think you can. You can make the argument that Mucci as -ccomplish more. But I think going forward I want judge judge and and based on these numbers thrown around. I mean, that's seems like he wants to go to free agency which must make red sock fans ecstatic because now they can't lock them up. Corrobos isn't nervous. But I could tell the inside they lose bets that'd be a huge fucking deal magic Yankee swoop than just got him future. Yankee Don future Hanky. I got another one that added to my list this yesterday future Yankee Frankie Laine door, Philly Cleveland's not gonna pay him. I thinking, I don't know where. I think in today Eloy Jimenez. Twenty eight. Okay. Where do you a pretty good spot such a bus? You quote me on that just a white sock. They don't doesn't happen. Why? Talks Davis white socks today. Tweeted out the projections for all the home runs for he went one through nine who's projecting the team John J leading off he said ten to fifteen home runs guests. How many home runs John Jay has hit since twenty fourteen fourteen eleven he's all of a sudden can head ten the fifteen White Sox? Dave is actually the craziest person that's ever existed on this planet, and that's a list. That's just a doozy. He's number one. He's he's absolutely delusional. But bottom line here. I wanna extend judge mealy. I hate the waiting game and all this, and I don't want judge arbitration to get you know, that snake Randy LeVine and just oh you strike out. Too much. You don't hit three hundred judge you hit in the wrist, whatever. I don't need that. I don't need Aaron judge getting that shit. Just pay them in deserves every penny. He gets to be the captain of this team the face. Of the franchise. He deserves every penny. Just get it done. So moving on some interesting news, which is kind of old Casey blew it up today like every Red Sox and Mets fan came out in the book, but I blocked about this three months ago the Cashman stories old, right? But I think some of the other stuff some of the stuff is like, yeah. No, da like, obviously Shelvin the bottom line here, Derrick. Jeeter was an asshole dick, you know, what men so is Michael Jordan, so's Tiger Woods. So as LeBron James is Koby Bryant. So is probably wing Gretzky not really hockey. I assume he was bit of dick the I betcha Tom Brady is an asshole. And he is the best PR people in the world. Not the biggest asshole, maybe not jeeter Astle level. But a bitch. Tom is it's not all sunshine and rainbows. When that guy talks the side. He's been a dick to some people. You're a competitor an athlete at the level talking about like some of the greatest of all times, you're not going to be the most chill guy. Ever. You can't. It's not possible. You have to you have to be arrogant. You have to have an ego. It is impossible to trout is maybe breaking that little barrier because he seems like he is just a good, dude and quiet and kept himself. But you'd have you thought that probably about jeeter in his playing days to and then it's just coming out and trout also isn't as exposed trout was playing in New York with this type of spotlight and media attention that jeeter had maybe he would also become a bit of a dick to I mean out in LA Anaheim, it's like. Got to be mad. So the part. It's it's in this book by Bob classic. Call the inside the empire. And it's I'm sure it's about I'm bunch of other things, and we might have Bob on the show of intially at some point because debut. Probably very interesting guests, and we talk about all these stories and whatnot. Besides jeers, some cool stuff. But. A lot of it was his dealing with Cashman. We've talked about this on the show, and how towards the end of his career cash wanna give him three years fifty one million. And he's jeeter wanted to get paid. You know, like he was still in his prime when she wasn't cashing basic tone. The fuck off jeeter's who else you give them money to he mentioned too, low Geeta stormed off tried look for other offers couldn't even come close to it. And they've taken the money back. So KFC blew that up. Stupid. My biggest takeaway from this whole arcola wasn't about geeder fucking love Brian Cashman. Yeah. He's just doesn't give straight says it how it is at first when I read this as I wife Cashman being so open. Why even like give this guy quotes for his book? And then I realized because he's coming out. Great. So, of course, the people I love Brian Cashman. He just shoots it straight. I love the whole article. But it was about another excerpt about how him in Georgia have screaming matches at each other Cashman, George Steinbrenner. Cast the way he orchestrated the. Deal for Stanton, the mother takeaway. Speaking of that deal is that Jeter anyone out there, which I always thought was a crock shit because I always thought that jeeter was way more about himself than the Ke's. Anyone that thinks jeeter gave Stanton to the Yankees is a more. There is no way he wanted to help Bryan Catherine given their history. Do people actually think that I people always say, I mean, I've always said as we always say there's a joke. Oh, we I think Anki fans maybe didn't believe things like he collude. All I think other baseball fans think oh look Jiro capitan James doing his own thing in Miami. He's fuck about the ankles. Yeah. Trying to build, and I respect that a different party career, you end like people were the whole stand like you said the sand trade, and basically he said take this fucking deal with the giants. The cardinals who are promise you trading. Everybody around you, and you'll be stuck here forever. You know, who that sounds like George fucking Steinbrenner Steinbrenner with them. I I love that. Like, obviously like stands our guy. Now, he's on our team. But juniors gotta worry about himself here, and he was trying to clean house get rid of that huge contract and Giancarlo had this no trade clause. And he wasn't accepting giants cardinals. Obviously Jesus pissed off. There's nothing wrong with that that's called being a fucking owner doing your job as an owner. I do think I mean. I don't think I'm thinking should have done better. There are things we look him not taking Giancarlo to the to dinner and descend on their thing. We are sure I think they're things to learn though, because jeeter was the guy is a life. That was pampered. He had things go his way he told the media what he wanted to tell them and stuff. And now he's in a position where no he has to answer for different things. He has to sort of being pampered as the pamper other people think that's an adjustment. And that was early on in his tenure in Miami. I would think and hope he'll get better at that. But yeah, I mean, he didn't start. Yeah. Definitely not started off great Miami. But I'm sure he'll probably figure it out other things in the article he wouldn't move to third base for a rod that was never gonna jeeter was never moving. He would rather die than not play short. Yeah. That's not that doesn't come surprise. At all me. This is the weirdest. One didn't go to Bob Shepard's funeral because he claimed he didn't know what that was weird that feels false that feels like Bob classic just live there. I don't think that keyed love bup. He kept the reporting of them. He honors him all the time that feels wrong to me. I know I'm not sure I'm not buying can't speculate on that. But I the one thing about geeder. I never liked through his career was his his mistreatment of our boy. I'm an eight rod guy if it's era adverse jeeter tell only to pick one I'm always taking a-rod. So I always wished they got along a little buddy. But jeeter really gave the culture would you gotta respect the garage. She held the garage because it's to be the fucking king of the city when someone's going to threaten that obviously he's going to feel we also want to be a winner. You want to be champion worked out they wanted to nine but could they have one more third chore? Definitely possible. I mean meeting a Packer fan. I saw Aaron Rodgers and Brett farve in that whole power struggle when Rogers right, it doesn't this should happen. So wants to come and take your job or be like the new guy you're gonna feel threatened by his buddy buddy with him. When he also get life article judge is almost opposite of that wanna came to get and sat right accomplished a way, less jeeter. He's been in baseball for had been baseball for year in baseball. For years. We'll see I mean, Aaron judge this is kind of the same. You never do Aaron judge kunas us four World Series and twenty years. Now, am I the book might come back? You'll what jeeter started off like judge is now exactly. And you know, what I still wouldn't give a fuck me five five world championships and the Mets caves he's big Mets fan. He's got three more than them as a free Chai's more than double. Now. Anyone I mean jeeter still one of the all-time Yankees. You don't need to be care. If you're a deck off. You're not don't give an awful person off the field. He was fucking king to the media right hand themselves. So well in front of media, and then he want an on the field. He was unbelievable. That's all I care about. I could care less. How yours a person? I'm prominent the same guy. I'm probably a little bit of different guy. Like you catch me in the wrong day like a dick at some point. Yeah. And you said on the rundown today, dude. Matt. Tell your stories you ready. We met a couple times to different times being demand. I even while we Matt I June of two thousand five in Saint Louis Yankee road trip got word that the keys Edith, we're probably gonna eat at this restaurant. So went there the waiter new my dad's friend who eat there, lots. He set us up. He walked into this back room. Talion restaurants. Jeeter facade, Tino, Bernie and tannin store. It's one of these things it's not like the other to figure out which one. I love tennis starts initials. She gamer. Your initials and as a hey nine at that point. He police on my body had on the stupid collared shirt. I remember the collared shirt I had a Yankee sling bag on and they you know, they signed the ball. I didn't really say anything to me while they were signing, and then they handed it back. Thank you actually turned around. And I had it was an era link bag that I had on just kind of funny Astle vote ever. I told her I was so we wait for table. And then, you know, ten minutes later, they bring us at the table racy right next to where they were. And where I was sitting at view of dark teeter entire meal spaghetti hanging out of my mouth. And remember Derek Jeter staring at me. But like, maybe laugh. It was good. That was a good experience for me few months later. So me, and my family are seeing the keys you were just staring at him. Well, I mean, it's dark fucking jeeter. I'm nine you're not gonna stare at the union. I contact man. I don't know when you look at. It's like Derek jeeter there. It's like a car wreck. But the opposite one time not at nine and probably not now. So anyway, few months later. Family road trips used to be seen the keys in different cities. And just trying to stay at the rotel. This was the first time we ever did it. It was a Marriott in San Francisco. Their goal is to just try and stay at their hotel. Because it's so easy autographs that way you play the elevator game. Which is when you go on your dad's. Oh, yeah. So we would do the elevator game up and down met fan. But she was just along the elevator game. Yeah. That's just ride the elevator. And hope someone gets it. How long does this go for until you find out lighter? And they're once I think Passat are Bernie, you should be on a watchlist. Probably join. Anyway, we I remember there was the street corner that we used to or not used to for this trip. We would stand at because the players would walk back from certain side of talent. They would go that way to get out there walking back, the hotel me and my dad are on one side of the hotel corner on the cross the street, we see Derek jeeter walk, and we had with us my dad's friend was in the picture Derrick jeeter jumps into the stands against the Red Sox on the pop up my dad's fern is like right there blown up picture of him in it where you could see him please Derek can sign this for me. I've see we'd get our own autographs. So we see them across the street. It's a green light. We just Hitel right across a couple of lunatics to Derrick jeeter, please please sign and he just had put his headphones in and it was like. Today. Move. And then a funny story. So from the other side of the street was the hotel, AVI and their big window, and my mom was sitting in the lobby watching the two of us chase after the street, the head of security who I got to know through the years is standing next standing right next to my mom, obviously, not knowing that there's a relationship and goes on would you look at these two lunatics running across the street after Jeter, and she just goes, that's my husband and son. Well, they can't do that. You're getting kicked out of the hotel. See me, Andy, we had our run-ins couple run ins something else. Oh, yeah. So then mom all. So one of the guys who were stocking out the inky with on that street corners. I just saw Derek earlier. I went up to him. And it was like can you please sign sign this? My wife loves you. And he said, everybody's wife loves and just walked away. So he is kind of a dick. But. It is one of this also saw a-rod on that trip. Ere? I thought was very nice. So I was at the corner era talking with his wife at the time Cynthia and his first daughter, I guess it was in the stroller. Eric please sign and he's like, I'm sorry. I can't sign on with my family walk my kid. I said, you know, Alex, totally got that. Totally got that another autograph. I did get was Bubba Crosby. I used to love him show who it was just staring at him. And he was like you want my autograph. Yes. He made me hold his coffee thought that was very cool. I held his coffee some eyeball. He trusted you to hold that. Call and that's why you're Dave's coffee guy. Now it all comes. I always thought Bubba Crosby a superstar. I thought that name which is like Bubba Crosby should be like retired in monument park that Obama Brasby the perfect name for what Bubba Crosby was to have a little bit of a come up and then just collapse fair. Well, try to get him on here. Crosby cry. I don't think it'll be hard. I can't imagine. He's up too much these days he has a lot of meteoric thought of mine. Jeeter might have an asshole. If you did not think if you thought like the clean image in front of the PR was just one hundred percent. I mean, come back to reality a little bit these guys when you get that level stardom, it's impossible not having arrogance to you and a little bit of ego. So I mean, take this do not like not become a Derrick jeeter fan because of this little story. It's just as a student wants five World Series championships. Nothing changed all Yankee fans burning Dirk koetter if they are. I'm gonna fight him. Let's get some current Yankee news still not good. It's actually getting worse injuries. This is becoming a little ridiculous. So dell. Lynn. He's going in the deal 'cause he's not throwing hard and he's top at ninety two. The reasoning is weird. So the calling it a right shoulder. Impingement Batanes is told the club. He's felt weaker than normal and he couldn't fully extend pitching. He's experiencing inflammation that fucking word inflammation, devil of the Anki so far so the shutting him down for a little bit. It's kind of indefinite they think maybe three to five days, they're hopeful. You know, they're very hopeful. He's going to be back. No problem. But for now, he's start- starting deal. Not the I L, but he'll be on a deal the reasoning behind. It is weird. So if you guys in Delon and his wife gave birth towards the end of the season, and he basically said that like because of the birth and everything he didn't throw as much. So then when he came back to spring when he reported low late is a week later, whatever he was trying to ramp it up to quickly, and that caused this whole inflammation thing. So basically reason he's on the deal is because of his newborn kid. Which I point to think that the inky none of the players decided to train this off sees besides Aaron judge just take the off season often get back into it in February. The only guys you care seems like judge Voy Stanton. Gary and bird. I'll give some credit looks like bird actually, did put some I will say, you know, it sucks because you know, especially opening day. You want have guys you want to go into the season healthy being like this team Moroccan? Well, yeah. But you know, I'd rather get the injuries out of the way. Now. Mind, if you this is not really theory. But if there is a theory that a team has only have so many injuries year per se for sure not theory for sure theory. But if that was where there's an average number of injuries, you get per year, at least we're getting out of the way now. But yeah, I I I'd rather not have these problems. I'd say it's okay to Delon's hurt. The bullpen is very very very very very good. Yeah. I think they're going to survive with three. He's the one unleashed worried about. For the least impact on Bing, messed definitely Hicks. Actually, no back injuries or just always annoying. That's the thing. But Hicks is update is that he's feeling better. No pain just waiting out the cortisone shot. He had two of them does like he's gonna be back relatively soon. I would think a week into the season. If he's not back IB, very confused and stunned. I think from all the reports seems like Xs okay, back injuries or annoying though. So they linger whenever Severino did throw which is comforting know he's trying to get back on the program. Granted it was a very soft toss wasn't drawing like sliders or any of that putting any emphasis on it. But he did make some throws and no pain. So that's good. So we'll move on. That's gonna be a gradual step thing. They'll take all precautions. But that's better news Tyler Wade removed from today's game with him. Double hips or double hip, which is bizarre. He he claims it's normal. Tala wade's. This is recall e Hari tolerate says he felt a little tight come into the ballpark. This morning could have been a long bus ride down. He thinks didn't get stretch out quite like he needed to today. But he's not worried says he just wanted to be precautionary with opening day so close so that doesn't sound terrible. If he works not able to make the open day Rosser. Clint Frazier would just be the guy steps in right now. I believe it's just them to battling out for the final spot that would appear the way. But with all these injuries someone else's returned someone we thought was dead or kidnapped. I didn't know where you're going this at first I got to now. Go bales. Breeze back so back. He's he's trying to be like Batman and like save everybody, basically flat. Ground is worried flat ground shitting their pants. My said this unless puck that's my favorite robberies. Now is Jacoby ellsbury versus flat ground right now flak rounds losing flock around Oche. For the past two years. Just been like this guy ended up on the table cruise cruise control. And then all of a sudden the undertaker gif ellsberg's back. He's he soft Oshun his and look like he's throwing a ball in a decade. But he's soft toss in a way haven't really heard of him running it when he starts running the lookout for that ground a flat grounds in trouble. Yeah. This would be a disaster. If he he can still roster spot. He's trying to trying his best. But this would be a disaster. I I don't want to let myself get sucked in I won't. But I might. Suck ellsbury I'm getting sucked at Sessa. He continues to dominate. I sent your screen shot. In spring his point six, I'm not gonna suck. Did I won't get sucked in? That at least ellsbury when he please. He he's been productive like at least at one point is career. Lewis has always been bad. It's time to shine. I don't know what what how many starts in the regular season. Would it? Take for you to be like, okay, something's happening here with who. Sessa? Start like good starts. Let's say five. Like five innings less than three runs. How many like? I can kind of believe me five five starts, you think. More or less who sold. Now, I need five to like if he's really like limited as walk problem. I'm kind of getting the if I wish to hubs from like October would hit me with a fucking sledgehammer right now hubs for three weeks ago. It hit you now probably point six zero spring training stature stupid, but everyone's like assesses back. I I just when Michael Kingstown. Minute says, the men kind of want believe guy, Michael king. I'm sure he's a great guy. He's just hasn't been good guys. Is not a good guy. Still my roster spot. Other than that. We are coming. I mean, we're a week away from opening day or here one seven days seven fucking days. We get the Baltimore Orioles. If is it a must sweet. I don't want to say I don't wanna throw out the term must win. But opening day. I always want to open we kiss beat the Orioles at home Dorrell's on opening day God, especially April. I know this is the opposite. But early April order in March in this case, I I do care about the standing just early very early on. I care ton than I don't really care wants may hits. You'll totally forget, April even happened. You'll even right? You'll forget the fight. I want to get off to just and again, it's like PTSD from elementary school where the start one and two right in the Mets would start. I mean, we're phasing team that shoe in fifty five games right school being like, oh, this is the for finding. And it's just so I care a lot about those first tenor soak games for Karen every game. Yeah. But I mean, we'll talk in in may be like, you know, it's like man the standings. We're not right time to the standings. I am on on April. Second. I dialed into the stand the socks a little bit. And then once we get past the all star break, we'll resume standings check. But early on. I am locked into those standings Auriol's Tigers Orioles. I mean, that's nine games. If they don't go seven to a mucking. Not not gonna hit the panic button. But like six and three is the worst. Yeah. Like, we can't defunct they could Orioles last year, and they one hundred games. What's you add that in the Oriel winds, and we're looking at like fucking amazing Pasu record biggies Eason here. So gotta get on a good start. I mean that's a week away. We'll we're gonna have season preview. Now, you'll hear a week from tonight. But we're just looking at because it's exciting. I mean baseball's I'm watching the fucking Japan game at five thirty in the morning. That's how excited amber baseball. We have March madness Sarah point guard just got suspended for the term at that. Wasn't a great great new. So I'm almost done with March madness. Yeah. Fucking excited. So now, we got out amount of you know, oh my God. What was that autumn? Adam out of you know. Awesome guy. We met him. He narrow tell poolside interview we talked about it when we recap Tampa. But we were nervous about kids screaming throwing fuck and party down by this pool and kids did show up as we brought Adam down to the pool, and you were getting nervous you tell me like fuck. Fuck. Fuck screw. But he's awesome. I hate kids pool. Even grow growing up. The me too grown-up. I never wanted to play with kids on a pool on vacation. And whenever kids whenever I would see kids at a pool I like shit like they're asked to play catcher something. So it's just it's I can't escape and the now doing interviews with the Anki outside of a poll. I don't want kids at my whole life revolving around kids not being. So you're not gonna have kids getting at here. I guess so they're not going to polls in terms of Adam though, talked about a range of things ask them how he's dark wizard. You're going get into you're gonna listen to right now. It's great interview twenty minutes. Thirty minutes about a little over twenty five. Great, dude. So hope you enjoy here is Adam out of you know. We're here. Poolside with new Yankees reliever. Adam AVI, what's going on man, not much happy to be here. Awesome. So we'll get right into it. Why New York you? We're all happier here. But why did you choose New York is the freedom? If all things were equal. This is where I wanted to be joining one hundred one team, obviously, I'm for being from New York being Enki fan growing up that held some weight. But I think I don't know what was going to happen through free agency. And it just kinda worked out this way. Where the best thing was the best thing. What was the free agent process like having multiple teams after you first time we've really gone through your career? I think it was just a learning experience. It's not what you think it's gonna be basically a lot of teams check in and it's exciting early on. And then there's a lot of like waiting dead period of monitoring other guys markets things like that. So it's kinda hard to know when it's going to all come to a head during the winter, especially this winter kimbrel still out there. Yeah. Crazy. No. Yeah. It's it's it's a little scary. But ultimately for me, I was one of the. Lucky ones that had a number of teams like with real interests. So never freaked out too much in the back of your head, though was New York always like the play for the most part like if they reached a certain number like I'm going there because you know, you're from New York all that. Yeah. Yeah. Probably unless there was some like other offer that couldn't blue water with a circumstance. I mean, there was definitely like a couple of places that like I had in mind that would be a great fit and the Yankees were obviously at the top of the list, and then they expressed interest early. So then, of course, right away like inside. I really wanted that two hundred million dollar contract came from royals probably Kansas City, right? You have one of the best arsenals I feel like in baseball, especially as a reliever at what point in your life. Did you realize like I just have? I'm just a dark wizard like basically, I make. I'm basically with wall pitcher in baseball. No, it's been a Evelyn. I mean, I've always had a ability to throw a lot of breaking balls. Those are the pictures. I liked when I was a kid and like just messing around my friends like playing catch like always trying to throw nasty stuff. Right. So fast ball. I was kind of a late bloomer with a fastball. So feel like the movement game was something I always focused on. And now that I got big and strong over time. And my fastball got decent like I've just always tried to incorporate the movement 'cause I knew that that was something that I had you know, for sure do cashiers just like hit you do back to the dugout after an inning. And they're like, why do you do that to me man, like me, actually? 'cause like, it's it's fun. Like, I think catching somebody a little bit like a little bit different than the other guys like especially like with our team now like our other. Main guys like all our rec super overpowering pitchers. So they just kind of set up, and it's like here comes see if anybody can hit it with me. There's a little more of a game. They're like thinking what's throw when throw it? And I don't know for me. Like, I like that stuff. And I think some of the catcher's do to how long does it typically take new catcher to get Justice to you? Yeah. They gotta catch me at least like three or four times. I think I it's like just for the action on the pitches. And then it's like maybe like the target cues that I like, and then and then like what I like to throw. I think I can be a little difficult because I don't I don't compromise on the pitch selections. Like what I wanna throw I'll shake like, I'll just keep shaking. I'm not really afraid to shake. So it takes for them to buy in. Yeah. So you said three or four times. Gary Sanchez may be eight times. He was actually going me. The other day did a good job. That everyone kind of knows about the whole Harlem clinic, and how you reinventing yourself just just talk about it a little bit in case people haven't heard about it. I mean, basically, I mean, it's a it's a cult story at this point scrapie. Yeah. I think the cool thing about it is that. You know in New York, there's really just nowhere to go. Like this is nowhere to throw like I dealt with that problem for a long time. And it's always been in the back of my mind. Like, even if I had just like a small little like Karaj type space. I could get something out of it. You know? And then luckily, I got this like eighty by thirty five space in Harlem, and my father-in-law it up and. It just couldn't have been any better. Like, nobody knew what was going on. And they're like, but yet there's hundreds of people outside the black on the windows. Right. Yeah. The windows are all blacked out. And like, it's very like, you know, Jerry rig like we got things hanging up like and all sorts of stuff. But but it was perfect. And it was like the type of environment where I kind kinda like go do my own thing. Go there at any time day or night, depending on what I had going on with the family, and like other other priorities, but still get my work in and like feel like I'm doing something that nobody else is doing. So there's always some fun in that, obviously it's far away. But do you think when you're playing days are over that can be like a business? You see yourself gotten into is running an indoor clinic like that. I don't know a lot of people like talked about it like right when they saw like people were like this could be a business like wildfire. Yeah. People were like, you could you could have people training here. Like and the market for like baseball training with kids. It's like crazy. I mean, people will pay anything to get their kid like one percent better. So if like you have like a cool situation like that technology. Jump on it. But like for me that I can't think about that right now. Like, I kept trying to tell people like it's not a business. Just like did you have going off to and like I have a couple of friends that will come like that are like other ball players. Like, you know, we grew in there. And like, you know, listen to good music and practice and stuff like that. So for me, it was just like it's not a business yet. Like this actually like literally just so that we can funny how in the article you you said you asked Matt Harvey because you're original mats moved to national crafts. Right. Matt harvey. And of course, Matt hobbies like we're all set. Well, like, so I saw him at the whole story as I saw him like two or three two winters ago. Maybe three winters ago at. Yeah. It was the year before I decided to the lab, and I saw him at union meetings. And I was chatting with him. I'm like, hey, I know you live in New York. Like, let's where do you throw? What's your situation? He's like oh actually throw down in the west village. And I was like, okay. It's a little tough for me to get there like amount Long Island. But like, let's let's figure something out together. Like, I'm going to get this space while blah, then he was like. Oh, yeah. Yeah. Sure. Yeah. No problem. And then like DM crickets, then I was like, I guess I'll just move the clock. He's left on red or just not even opened. I just I just think maybe I don't know. Some point. I don't wanna look. So one pitchy worked on there and one pitch. You say you love to throw is the slider. A lot of people think it's maybe the most effective pitch in baseball for those. That don't understand with simple minds, like us wise the slider so effective like my cider or some. I think just because it's a little bit different than other guys. Like, it's it's not like a hard sharp side. It's like a second curve ball kind of like from like a different angle. So I just think ultimately it's a pitch that the guys aren't used to seeing a lot. So it takes a Justin to and it says it's so much slower than my fastball to that. It's hard to look for one and hit the other. So that's kind of the dynamic there that I think has helped me the air in Colorado changes anything with your slaughter. And do you feel like it's different? It's different Yankee Stadium or any other place than in Colorado. Is there something to that one hundred percent like Colorado? We had the numbers like you could tell right away like being there like something's not right with your stuff like things are moving the same. But then we got the numbers, and we started figuring things out over my tenure there. Yeah. Balls. Just don't just don't move as much not enough air friction. You're just not going to get the same movement. So I had a good slider there, but it wasn't like really big on the road. And it was the toughest part is the adjusting of going on the road and having like really like heavily moving like shit, and then then being at home, and it's like kind of basic. Okay. The Yankees have this ideology. That's like pretty become very public that they are staying away from fastballs. Even though we have collectively as a bunch. I think the highest loss of any group fastball loss, but they love sliders. And all that have they talked about that have they haven't they haven't sat down with you. And be like, I mean, they probably don't have to sliders your pitch while they have a lot of info, I mean. But I think what they're trying to do is maximize the effectiveness of each individual pitcher like they're not gonna tell Britain stop doing his fastball because it's like elite. You know what I mean? And for me like nobody's gonna tell me stuff during my slider because that's how I get people out. So I just think the Yankees like are are fortunate enough to see some trends that work and kind of enlightened some of the pitchers like don't be so predictable with your fastball. But at the same time like if you have one hundred hour fastball, you're gonna throw it. So. I don't think you'll see Chapman going super slide. So only about a month into spring training. But what have you made of the culture so far and like how are you adjust? I mean, you're the new kid in school, basically, how you have friends. Well, I have a Mayhew Colorado, and I know too low, and I I've gotten a couple of other of the other guys like I knew Matanzas like for a long time. And you know, I've met, you know, obviously, everyone and try to simulate a specified can. But yeah, it's definitely like being the new kid at school for sure. Overall, culture is good like the guys are good. And which you appreciate coming here is like there's not a lot of gimmick stuff going on. It's all just about winning, and you can just tell right away that like like we expect to be there like in the end. So it's a little bit different than like, hey, let's like hopefully stayed healthy and have a good year. And maybe great thing could make him happen like America. Yeah. Colorado every year was all right around August run here and make something interesting maybe sticking as a wall card here. It's like if we don't win the division. We won the vision to twenty twelve let's look and go, so it's a little different. Who is your favorite pitcher growing up? Who did you model yourself after? I know your big Jimmy Key guy was. Yeah. Jimmy Key L do K David Cone for me. Those are the guys like because they they weren't overpowering guys. Like those guys identified with like rata curve balls creative out there different arm angles. I love sina. Those are those are my guys like basically just because you want to like somebody that you can relate to you know. So you're obviously a little more analytical than a lot of pitchers and you've talked about that before. But how do you balance the new school on with the old school just sort of feel? Yeah, I think that's tough. There's pitching fundamentals there stuff that like before you can really like execute a game plan like you have to be able to do basic shit like throw strikes and like throw like multiple pitches for strikes, and like repeat your delivery. And do a lot of old school stuff. That's still rings true. But once you get through that then like the analytic stuff the information game is just kind of helping you to make good decisions when you're on the mound and like adjustments over time. So that you can stay ahead of the hitter. So I'm always willing to take any info I can. But I try to remember my roots is like for me like the biggest difference between success and failure is like my mental game. So that's kind of old school thing. But like having a killer attitude out there like stuff that like my dad taught me when I was young. Like, the suffering matters with your stuff, you embarrass alive header sometimes there are some videos and YouTube that are laugh L hilarious, you happen to embarrass one of our former players, I think he's on the Phillies. Now Shane Robinson couple of days ago. And it was so bad that his back foot actually stuck out. He just had no idea what he was doing the poor guy himself on the pace in a foul ball, he took over for judge last year at did not go, so well, but Porsche around can you remember specifically like the most embarrassing moment. Like you've you've gotten to a hitter that you just like. That guy last year. I mean, I had a viral strikeout of Dan's Swanson, right here. Where like it was the pitch was so far outside that, you know. I I was surprised at catcher caught the ball wasn't embarrassing. I just felt like I can't believe he swung at that. I can't believe he caught that. I can't believe I got a strike out. There is like bases loaded like it could have been ball four walked in a run. And it was one of those things where I was just like kind of stunned by the whole situation. And then like they're making it out like that like that. It was like such amazing pitch. And it was like, well, I didn't really mean the throwing quite like that and just kind of happened. And but I don't know. I mean terms of I'm pretty good sport out there. I don't like to try to think about it. Like, I respect all the all the opponents. They're all super obviously, great players. You know, the only guys I don't love or the dodgers. So okay, talking about just like they can never get over the hump of the dodgers. And they like I probably gave up sixty percent of my runs to the dodgers. And they you know, they do it with their with their little bit of their swag. And I just felt like he wants specifically come to mind like. Everyone except for maybe Kershaw who. Other than like their whole lineup. Like great players. It's one of those things they're going to beat you let you know about it. So I always took a little bit of pride. If I did have a good outing against them kind of like fuck you guys. Well, your new version of that is the Boston Red Sox. Gotta hate them more than we got to see. So that sort of begs the question we're talking in Barrasso hitters, how badly would you embarrass Babe Ruth? I mean, you know, I said it already. I I agree with you. The thing is like I wasn't trying to like I wasn't trying to say like some people were like, oh, well, if he grew up in this era, that's not the it's not the Ermolai. Wait, I was making saying back then it was a different game. And I'm pretty sure have a good shot. That's all void. I think takes offense to he was on our other podcasts barstool starting nine. And he was basically like his guy. They asked him. If you go back in time who is you wanna see and he said, Babe Ruth. And then are the guy was like Beirut, essentially be Adam Dunn in today's era, and he'd like void got very. Really? So I feel like when he when he heard your, quote, he was kind of taken aback from that. I think some people just Babe Ruth is like he's a goat. So people look at him a certain way, but at the same time he was overweight drunk and and having hot dogs all the time during the game. So I don't know how in shape he could have been the. Don't you think if he was a modern player, he would be improved because he would have like modern, diet, and workout? I think that's possible. I think that's that's plausible. I don't I don't know bay personally. Seems like he was pretty content on doing it his way. But like little things I was thinking about too, and I made the comment like he's swinging like a forty ounce bat like you hit against any of us the forty ounce bat that would be a mistake. So he'd have to make several adjustments to make a fair fight. You went win number zero. And I know you didn't wanna make big seen. I've it, but everyone you got the green light. What was the you know, what what's the whole thing around number zero with you? Yeah. Just like I wore when I was a kid and then in high school, and then obviously with the Rockies it's like oh out of my dad came up with the idea. It's really just like kind of silly. Played like, obviously more than just pitcher as a kid. So it looks a little less weird. I think on a position player. And then now that I'm just a pitcher at definitely stands out in a strange way. But I think like over the last six or seven years, I've kind of forgotten about it. And then this year, it was reawakened when people were like, you think the Yankees you zero. And I was like she is. I don't know. I understand what the retire numbers mean. So. Get caught up in that. And people get upset about that like ghetto yourself. There is rushed or now where you have to get your number retired. Otherwise, be they only single digit number to knock Eric. I would assume. I would assume to play more than three seasons. Thank you. Really? Three really good season three years playoff MVP's or something. Cool. I'm not opposed to that the keys are strict. And you know, there was debate. Will they let you wear number zero. They also made you shave your beard was that just easier. Was it hard hard hard? Yeah. It's tough. I mean, I've just not used to it. Now, I'm going to share this morning. I'm gonna routine now like every other day, and I'm getting better at it. But it's not something I had to think about before have you have you got an situation yet where like you had a five o'clock shot, and they're like, yo you gotta cut that. They haven't said anything. But I said yesterday like they get on you. I've been I've been really like paying attention to other guys likes facial status. So I can see like what's the where the line is. It's definitely interesting. I think I think they should go away with it personally. But what I something? Something. You mentioned DJ LeMay who is know your friend on the team. And all that give us a little preview of what he's like, really? You know, he's he's new as you are, obviously he's very quiet, but like like as a personality, but he's such a gamer and like such a consistent player. And he's a guy that I've said this before like, you might not notice him like the first couple times you watch them play. But like he really grows on you to the point where you're like, this is my fucking guy. Like you want the ball hit to him? You want him up in a spot. He's got a lot of contact in his game, which is like kind of old school. What we need which is kind of like against these high velocity pitchers. Get a guy who can put the ball in play in a big spot get on base, and he's gonna use the opposite field, which is also nice for the stadium. So I think I think the Yankees got steel with him. Honestly, so move into something that's not baseball. We do social media stocking of every player before they come on stuff to talk about. I noticed. You don't have a Twitter, but you do have an Instagram the thinking on that. Yeah. Like I had a Twitter for a while like. But it was like like not like one that I could be found on psychic get my news and stuff on Twitter. But I felt like Twitter like you gotta have really thick skin to be a to be a ballplayer on Twitter. I'm even Instagram. I mean now shifting to over eighty game planning how to handle my Instagram at Yankee. Because it's way different like DM's just through the roof and comments on pictures and things like that. And even though I don't like really care about other people's assessment of my pitching. I don't need to see a lot of negative stuff. All the time. You know, I'd rather just keep it moving. So I still wanna post and put something out there like connect with fans, but at the same time like how do I stay insulated? So we've been trying to figure that out we in our line of work deal with a lot of criticism to and sometimes a positive things. I've always thought there should be an app just positively like, you could only say nice things. Otherwise does both. There's like a moderator there. This is you can only say your funny. Would you say Instagram's now your favorite phone? I've had it from for a long time. Like, I've always loved it. But a favorite apple my phone? I don't know. I mean podcast. I abs-. I'm always listening to. I'm a big believer in the format and obviously music, but yeah. For social Instagram. I noticed on your team. You have a lot of nature shots some stadium shots into photography's. Yeah. Yeah. You know? It's just something to do. And I have always been into cameras, and that type of stuff ever since I was young and we travel a lot. So I saw I don't want to forget about where I've been at that. Your New Yorker born New York lived in the Aussies, they're full-time. What's the worst part of living in New York? I mean, it was it was a dead guy in Penn station. Was there literally sitting down dead with a tarp over him and people were just walking by is it weird that that doesn't phase? I just hope it doesn't delay. My subway. Grew up in Brooklyn Brooklyn felt like a little bit more of like a little bit less congested than Manhattan now being in Manhattan the last several years. That's the worst part is just your options for getting around, especially if it's cold out are in very good like because you can't you're not gonna wanna walk somewhere really far if it's cold out. So then it's like cab over both like not great because there's traffic everywhere, and they cost money, and then like or you can drive, but then you'll never ever park, and there's also traffic so just like the congestion, I think if you're if you're inability if you have an inability to walk it becomes tougher so glass half full. What's the best part element of New York? Probably the fact that there's access to every everything the best of everything like as a kid. I always felt like if I was passionate about any one topic. I could go see the best thing. Like if I would have been into like opera music. I could you know, went to Lincoln center and seeing the best in the world at that. So you just have such a like the best of the world comes to you every year. And that's kinda unique the game of baseball. Changing in intensive the starting pitcher not necessarily being phased out. But there are just different strategies, obviously, Kevin cash. Raise comes up with bullpen napkin, probably be bigger this year, more people. I mean, they won ninety games with that. What are your thoughts on bullpen? And could you see yourself as an opener? Well, I think I think it's a move that you do like if that's kind of your route to winning like if I can't speak necessarily for the raise. But they feel like they have a couple of real starters and a lot of like Honda hybrid guys. So that's the model that works for them. I'd be surprised if we did a lot of it because we have such establish veteran. Type starting starting guys really solid guys. But I think it's a move that you do kind of like I said out of desperation for your roster. I mean me personally, I would do anything. I would open close do anything in the middle. It's not a big deal to me. But I'm not sure if the game is a better product with opener. Not so we'll see how it evolves. This year. A lot of possible. New rule changes. One of them is the three batter. Minimum for reliever as early yourself. How do you feel that you like probably don't like that? Right. Well, my initial my initial thought on it was like you're taking a guy's job away. But then I was like what you're probably giving more diversified pitcher job. Like instead of just being a lefty specialist now you're rewarding somebody who can get like both sides out probably to make the roster. So that could be good. But just in general like telling a guy how to use his his when to bring in his weapons is like not really what the game's all about. So I'm not in love with the idea. But I'm either vetting it out a little bit this year in the Atlantic league. You can see how that plays out. So we were going to get some more of that. So they're they're trying a few different things. What would you think Rowbottom pirate home plate? How I feel like I've been I've been I've been wanting that for a while. Just and it's not because I don't respect on Pires. I do and I like I like the human nature of the game. I am old school. But there's there's so much on the line with balls and strikes, and it's such a hard job. Like, you can't you're not gonna get them. Right. Like, it's really hard. And I just think being that there's so much on the line with balls and strikes. It'd be great if we can get them right because. You know, they affect people's careers and the seasons like in ways that are like really hard to hard to calculate wouldn't be less fun. Yelling at a robot though. Yeah. Although I try never to get empire. Because it's like, it doesn't do you any good? You want them to call? You wanna lose lose more pitching to give more bitches? Yeah. What about a pitch clock? I don't like it. I'm not for me. I mean the game. I I don't I don't like I don't like the clock between the innings. I mean, obviously, we want things to go in a timely manner. But I think like the clock is just not a thing that you for decades. And decades you went and saw a baseball game. And now to have a clock right in your face like as like hurry up and come set. And I don't know. I'm not a big fan of it between some of those rule changes. And you know, the free agency market taking so long to develop. It seems like there's building tension between players and owners, do you think we're headed for striking a couple years? I don't know. I don't know that it will happen. But I I will say this like the players are are very aware of everything that's happening. And really preparing for that possibility. Like, so I think if there was to be one like this would this would be the time. I'm just because like maybe the last couple negotiations like the players. It wasn't on our radar that that like a work stoppage could be a necessary like tactic. But I think the guys have really like really been paying attention to the last two years and really starting to ask the larger questions and even the young guy. So I think that the guys are more connected now than they probably were over the last ten years. And I think that's that's a powerful thing. If you could steal one pitchers pitch. Let's say the history of the game. Not even now who would be to just add the arsenal. That's a tough one. I mean, it'd be nice to have that Jordan Hicks hundred and three months. Springstreen for one week. You're just adjusting tickets and one oh three. Yeah. Yeah. That's crazy. It's also weird that he didn't have as many strikeouts. You'd think with that. But he also added a slider this off season. So that's yeah. Willing to bet that he's gonna strike a lot of guys this year. I think he's gonna learn figure out some things there was some more sliders figure out maybe four seamer. He's gonna punch tickets if he's the National League. All right. So before we start her up to more kind of just random well once a question one is an assessment question. Just what are few of your pet peeves? You seem like you might keep a list of pet peeves? Olis'? I I have a less. I I don't know if that's a common thing. But what what are some things that bother about baseball? No, just now life life, New York life. New York City bicyclists, really. Bay the rules of the traffic like they're just trying to cross the street and some guy just goes through red. I hate sane buildings that looked like houses, but aren't actually houses. What do you mean? There's there's buildings that they say oh nice house. But it's it's actually a dentist office or funeral home. That bothers me that's interesting. So weird. Any odd ones like that? I don't like smelly. Uber's or like anytime. I'm like, it's really I feel bad like giving people like low star rating or something like that. But sometimes I've been in a car were like a half to get out of this car. And I'm like, but that's your your job is to like create like a good environment in your car. That's the least you can do. And sometimes I'm like, this is just a torturous experience. And I've had that too many times in New York. Uber guy in the city sometimes. Well, just think. Yeah. It's just easier in particular where we are like to get an over to get attached. Better chance will smell better. Usually a better chance are that my other thing, and this is just tell me if this is true or false. You seem like you'd be into aliens and space, I'm into space. Score one for me. One hundred percent. But it's just it's more likely that they are than they aren't by a lot. But but but that that they'll come to earth or been earth that can't say with any certainty, but it's just the universe. Not to get too crazy, but the universe and the multi verse it so unfathomably fathom ably large and the way that we came the be is. So it could it could be done again under the right set of circumstances. And it just seems that many chances that yes that it would be I actually think it might not be that big the university. We don't know for. Sure, it's. Oh, yeah. Like, you know, we're expand. It's got to be big. But we don't know laugher. Sure. I guess we don't we haven't been there. I mean. Yeah. We have pretty good evidence. That shows if you could pick one MLB player to be an alien that you think like, oh, this guy could be Elliott who would. Chapman. Maybe. I mean, he's a freak. He's you know, there's some guys that are just different. They're different. Yeah. Now last question this bullpen is being hyped big time, and it kind of is every year of the Anki this year. It's I mean, we add you bring back Britain Dallin, we got Chapman. Even if Canley concern around green green. Do you like what is the potential here? Do you think this could be the best bullpen of all time? I mean, I think on paper. It's it's obviously very very six closers. Yeah. I mean, it we're just gonna have to see how it plays out. I I last year. I was on a pretty good on paper bullpen to and a lot of things when wrong and Colorado. And so I'm hesitant to like make predictions on it, but guys stay healthy. And they pitched the way they're capable of like sometimes I'm like wondering what I'm even gonna pitch because there's just that. There's that much talent. There's so many guys you don't even think about I mean holders. Good pitcher. I mean, you can tell and green. I mean, he's like arguably one of the best guys in the league. And people think he's like the fifth best guy. I don't know. That's crazy to think. So it's pretty nuts. D do you care about where you pitching like anyways phase out of the game? I just wanna pitch. I mean, I wanna pitch regularly. That's that's my biggest concern. Try not to pay too much attention to the situation. I'm in because you know, I I wanna come in and like dominate when I'm in there, regardless if we're winning losing or whatever I have a feeling you're going to be in very regularly with. Your stuff hope all the best to you. I I look forward for all the viral strikeouts. That you're gonna have this year hopefully against JD Martinez. Mookie Betts this meal. But thank you for coming at them. Bustle? Bustle? Thanks, guys. Thanks. All right. And that was adamant of, you know, thank you so much for coming on. He seems like a guy we're gonna have on gin think he enjoyed it. He likes parcel. He's gonna have a point four Yara. He's going to be a wizard very happy to be friends friends. I think we're friends with. Oh, yeah. When I meet a person their friends of that caliber. He's very interesting guy thought, you could tell very cerebral about thing through thing. That's why the question he thought. Oh, that's why news Elian guy here. That's the replay. Or you're your space guy. Sure. Yeah. Yeah. And interesting guy and rooting for him. Obviously he's going to be incredible this year, especially if Delon's injury lingers a little bit. He's gonna step up big time in that row that I mean that bullpen is gonna be unbelievable. And he's going to be hopefully, big cattle of it love that. He's from New York New York guy, you know, group Yankee fan wish him all the best. So adamant of you know, you are friend of the show, and hopefully we'll come on again. Once you're into the swing of things. My biggest takeaway from that is that he's his sliders. And even better when he was like, yeah. Like, my daughter wasn't that good in Colorado. Wasn't that good? Where after? I just wanna see him mowing down the Red Sox having no idea what to so. That was cool. We're going to give you Tyler raid on Monday show. We are in a barbershop that was very interesting. Hopefully, his hip is okay by then seems like every said about it because that's how time works. That is how time works. Thank you for explaining to the listeners, but we'll be back Monday. And hopefully, no more injuries. Please. Please got see this is John sterling you've been listening to short porch. Byproduct of barstool sports.
The Yardwork: Ep 135: By The Fans
"What's up guys? Welcome back to the yard work on your hose, Yarbrough Guanzhou. And with me today is I got the two guys on episode one thirty one nut grad recap, Corey and peyot has an yelling as well. As our guy Carl. It was his is your second time on real Oji. Will remember you because you're on one of the first episode ever. Yeah. I don't remember. Which one exactly they was literally the second. It had to be one of the within the first five or six share. But yes, so we're excited get this back on 'cause we're doing another recap of what's happening to pass ten days or whatever. And we're gonna have we've we've four people in studio right now. And so we're gonna get a full rundown by the fans, so make sure you guys were listening to subscribe. If you're listening on the pod being that make sure you follow us and shadow to sponsors hit factory baseball baseball style wanna one. All right with all that out of the way to start this off with the Noah Syndergaard home run pitchers Rankin, but got a little help. Definitely did help. If you guys didn't see Dexter Fowler. Who I think that's a fellow fouls actually, pretty decent defender. Top-five one point he jumps up the ball comes off his glove and Syndergaard helped himself out with the home run. Exactly. I mean the Mets offense. All right. I mean, always good to help yourself out. The board. We're in core of five win game time, we help them a little bit. But we got we got three Yankee fans and one here. Got to. You got you got vocalise your voice for your Matt. Teachers are raking out here in to Graham hit one early in the air. They have really good hitters for. Hitman? We're going to talk about the grandma a little later in the episode was speaking about home run. So that Syndergaard like, we said, it was kinda crazy. Dexter fowler. Wasn't like him. We're going to segue that into Kim Anderson. Let the kids play. Yeah. Man. I mean, playing real good anything you could just do kind of whatever really wanted and kinda early ah showed up of Brad Keller. I think he was on the royals guy. Tim Anderson thirty. Chuck his bed. Five seconds. I'm what I'm definitely with it. I I've seen Moby page sit like say there with it. But they still suspend them. It makes no sense. Yeah. I don't think the commissioners running them PP true. How can they support? And then, you know, the commission. I I like it. I think it's I think it's fun. You watch the kids play let him do a sting. I mean, a moonshot and the guy's been hot. And I mean isn't motions took over if you don't want him to get the backflip strike out. And also the thing is it's like, you know, he was in the moment. Right. He's threw his bat. The royals had a full probably inning or to to discuss whoever beyond the mount next. Whether it's still cower they bring someone else in there beaming one atom. For away. Everyone knew. I feel you can't blame a guy for like what he does in the moment. And then you can have premeditated hit by on the guy you're gonna wait and into your to to throw the ball guys hip, but then. Pretty pretty entertaining fight. I thought I wasn't expecting. I didn't actually escalate that hard. Yeah. Maybe it was just you know, we gotta take care of business here star behind the guy in. Yeah. Von exact news coming after act like that. But I just feel like that will be should step in to the best parts bench-clearing brawl or one like the bullpens run out. Now. From so and you just walked her run. And then like what is gonna do a five some of the relievers short of that five eleven like, what are you gonna do by the time? They get the fights over radio fight done. I'll never forget the fight last year with I think it was I forgot Tyler Allston at second base. Now. Listen kelly. Oil was at second base. It start at second base for joy and. Just remember, Dave Robertson, just see. Running with his high sock with. I don't know. I don't know if it was last year two years ago. It was Africa. What happen but million role minds are talking. They shove each other. And that newer grabs Mckee by the bat. Dude. Everyone needs a teammate like Didi. He went up against Miguel. Who is not you know, like if I ever saw and like Dina fight like, yeah. Like, he could probably take. I don't think I saw for saying that but Mickey's big dude he just went he grabbed away from Roman. There's no water down to fight the Yankees with judge Sobat Theun bathrooms. Luke. Imagine tate. Void has of bat and your heads like on a t you wouldn't feel it. Off you wouldn't feel it would probably be like turning TV up. It would just going. Gamma thrown stuff. Gave it throwing they have Luke Voight has a baseball bat. I wash game of thrones. Like, I just started watching it. I liked tribal. It's like it's kind of long an hour each episode. Like, I'm not saying, it's a really good show. I liked the premise of it. And like I've seen some episodes. And like I do enjoy it. But the problem is ago like two weeks watching an episode and then it's like horn. Grind. There's some that. Are just lingering always bills up like on season one for like five months now. And like that's kind of a problem. But I do have to say it is a real good show. I wasn't Syndergaard like an episode of game of thrones or something I have no idea. I always Lincoln with hair. I could just be totally making a game of thrones fan listening right now. And they're just like throwing. Not game of thrones. Not they're pissed right now. Let's here in our DM's the yard work. You're mad that we kind of butcher something with game of thrones. Just let us here. Watch game. Thrones Carl prude sorrow through. So. Yeah. Oh, and then talking about fights. I guess now we're doing these bras and fights like that Yasuko. We he got into a little bit of a fight legendary fund. Yeah. Legendary Derek teachers to hit a home run of Archer. And this guy watched it for a long time. He hit on the water. I mean in the Chris Archer is not happy, and he was just arm watching. It's like Joey Votto milky Cabrera holding down week gets out of them. Hooker Barnhart MRs. Going after he's a bull, man. He just the impact player, you know, plays with his emotion. And usually it's all good you've been guys, usually, honestly. I'm not for this. Kili? Got the. I do like watching that. It's like I entertain. I wish estimate a little bit more land more punches because there's like pictures where he's look at from an angle is literally as we Versi entire everybody. Pittsburgh, I saw paint. Right. Ain't it as a maze? Ing he literally. And he was ready to fight everyone to hang that up in Cincinnati. I do say we is probably one of the most entertaining baseball news. His mic'd up stuff. He Darko like stepped up to bang licks the barrel. Let's do that. Bonifaz? Why did you do what happens is when you hit like a foul ball the bat outta why licks it? I mean, that's just weird. But when. Fastball comes by you smell the bat you smell like burning wood. So I'll know that might be something. He likes the taste. My strange addiction. Yasuko put him on this on the show. It's actually really funny. So now, we'll stay in the National League. Another guy worthy of our time on the show is Christian yelich thirteen home runs should have been fourteen. But he got his robbed was it yesterday to ago. Preserves yesterday. Bellinger, too. Run. Cody, Cody give it and Cody taketh away was incredible dude yell at the guy's been looking insane. The last year zone on came. Second half. I can't believe it's only been one month. He's already hit doing run thirteen home runs in a couple of weeks RBI's, and the crazy thing about it is just like how we always say. This is like when you're in Miami. You're just like an average ball player as soon as you leave that forced Bill to that stadium. Your absolute feast washer said lesser, stands right? Marcellus zona. I mean. The thing about Marceau's is he has to be the laziest ballplayer. You likes to play baseball. I don't even think you pretty funny though, because I was Oona made that plain like crazy climbed on the fence and the bulge. Dexter Fowler likes. What's going on with the Corneau's, Al sealed? Yeah. They even. Like twelve nine. It'll be Instagram ranked number five today teams, right? I actually really don't they? At six a minor league team. Still wouldn't games who watch him all the cardinals. Oh, like, do shattered a Brian Cashman because he's only guy that can lose literally a whole darting. You can learn they I'm sure listening you've seen it Instagram. You've seen aren't the starting like nine plus D H you could fill with. And it's funny because I see jokes like congrats to Jacoby ellsbury can't even make the Yankees all injured. What where is he? Hush money. This is the thing that's talking about grandpa about this. If he doesn't play by like a certain day, which is coming up the Yankees get seventy five percent of insurance back, and they got that last year too. So there aren't even paying that much from to be around. Yes, not ready. It's not much like so long. He played only thing that really bothers me about. Yeah. Before standing came is that there's there's something wrong with the Yankees where they're not telling us. Exactly what's wrong with the guy. Just a mischievous like first Severino. I probably about before it was like seventy Kershaw, right? Both had shoulder inflammation. Kershaw's back misses. A start of JV starts. And this is March or whatever, and they're like Severino won't be pitching. Till may everyone's like and then come weeks. MR? I why would you get them arrive? It's just any place. And now he might not everyone's thinking, oh, that's why he signed that contract who security because he might not throw this year. And like I feel like there's some things that they're not. They said Hicks would only miss the first opening series. No one's talked about heck's Haixing like what is going on with Yang Matanzas. No. The last time we were like, it's a mystery. And I mean, naked use them because the other day man yacht. Chad green struggling in and out of you know, give up those two home runs hours. Thank other came back. Just actually, but we like to keep out of, you know, do that new toy everyone. Everyone wants like I can't. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. And I mean, he's got some when he's on he's on but needs at slider. Back. Yeah. Doing soup. He had like that crate two thousand seventeen like they kind of like overpaid formal bit trade. But I didn't mind I always say like you can make back the money. You're you're the New York Yankees, you were gonna make more money than any team just in revenue along pretty much healthy don't waste my time. I want to win. Now, if you have to spend spend, we're going to get it back. I don't have the money. I don't care if you're going to get us the guys wanna championship and your wind. Download that's all I care about. Exact I'm when now mode. We. That's the thing. Like if it doesn't work out like obviously guys are hurt. Right. That's a problem. Was the last time the keys weren't in when now mode. I mean, they're always get the best free agent. Right. That's why it never bothered me. Like when they obviously it sucked to watch. But like I get it that I can do everything he can to put the Yankees win nam. Oh, that's laws upset this offseason. We didn't spend money because you can make the money back. But I think especially near Janke fans, we're accustomed to winning. And we want to win veges in new general anything anything we do. I wanted to be in the seems like in the direction of one is even though Kashmir didn't spend I still trust them. Whereas guys so long year. But I'm also K was sometimes emptying out the wallet now. Yeah. Definitely. And even like when they weren't playing to made that big trade for like traded Miller to jam in. I mean, look what Miller's gotten us actually got us Frazier and James Pez. You also have to think about it though. Like, the general manager you Disney. More wins than losses. More wins and losses in the year. More good frigid guys. Not besides ellsbury everything they've done has been so well, we Chapman for glacier Torres just to get him back just to get him back for relatively okay deal. But I mean, if you're the cubs like. What a world's fight with my with my grandma better. I'm like if I'm the cubs. You give labor for like, I think if I'm the Chicago it's been one hundred eight years I wanna World Series two hundred. Wherever I'm okay with AVI by his right? When you think about the Yankees, it's like all we gave was Chapman to get him back. Ryan the money's not really an issue for the Yankees. And we got gleyber Torres who's going to be our guy for the next ten to twelve years. It's incredible. And we got Clint to Clinton good. I'm. So I was always a clip Frazier fan. I've I've so happy that he's actually just going off as getting this chance. He had all this concussions. Yeah. I mean, and that's really unfortunate. They concussion another injured Yankee always I hope every three fifty to four hundred the Yankees like four Hennion. How it's crazy right now. He's jeez. To end Harvey last year Frazier giving I I'm still the glare guy. I think labor is he's I mean he's been playing short. He's been taken over that leadership. Brought a young guy an unsung year writer and Luke void. I think those guys have really been gluing. This this hurt team together because Yankees are eleven and ten second the alleys. And if honestly any other team had a major blow injuries like this. They would be absolutely destroyed. The fan base are still Rockin. We're still kicking. And we still have a ton of money in the Bank to get some guys. Line. You don't really spend money unless unless international, but but like if they trade for mass and Bumgarner Dayton resign him at the year, and they'll have leverage over that. So there's a lot of hopeful stuff for the Yankees. But poor guy. Cory just doesn't want hear about the Yankees all day. So we're gonna we're gonna give them a chance with the degrom. So core your Mets to Graham, he had that had been elbow property seems all right Larkin got the MRI. That scare you a little bit. I didn't wanna see Graham after all that money to just give them the contract, but said to start Friday, they really need them. I start the other day this guy, Chris flexing. Got Chris flexing as house or now's a picture of. He's throwing my Dr. Gory heard what you said about your rookie. I appreciate who's the other Mets pitcher. That's really been von Diesen. Other vets pitches, Stephen Matson eve of eight runs of one isn't that? Right. You can get one out. Vargas too. I think it was less Stolac Saturday didn't get out of the first against the Braves eve up like forty pitches one out and then in the post game interviews like I don't get why got pole. This is. Like, you know, looking down on the Mets. But they got a lot of bright sizes season the Pete Alonzo, which absolutely. Healing. Looking Conforto with the comeback. Jeff Jeff good meal. Also, the thing about the Mets last year was they were like the Anki. They were super engine point. They have other pick is on the DL. Now, I'll obviously, but when these guys are healthy, I mean, they got some some good players, and they're also kind of in a similar boat with the Yankees when you talk about ellsbury with cesspit as the thing is I don't know what the insurance know payback is on him, and for how many games into the year, he has to mess because if he comes back, and they don't get insurance that might be a little bit of a waste of money. Especially for team doesn't typically spend too much doesn't really have a lot of hand they use it somewhere else. And so I just hope Cessnas doesn't skirl. And if he does come back. I hope he's. Metro station struggle. And I think they should try to go out and sign a Kyko. You know, what I actually Geos on the free agent market. Oh, listen. There's actually a crazy situation with reading Newt yesterday with my grandpa as we said like three times my grandma. A big baseball guy. He knows. And so we were looking to douse kaikal reason. Why teams aren't signing them is because he used a restricted or senators. Qualifying offer from the Ayrshire. So of you sign Kaiga before the draft you have to you have to give up a peck, and you have to work that deal out with the Astros. So you might be given a one two three fourth maybe fifth round pick for the and teams. I think are just going to. Yeah. That's stinks, right? For him six sings from a hundred percent. I mean, I think if you really wanna play you would've worked out some kind of deal the Astros of sucked it up took a pay cut to play. Because now he might not even get signed this year. And like it's different like, it's almost like a Levy on bell situation. But at least love young Bella didn't want to be a he wants to play. We'll like Levy on hated the you know, the franchise. A long term plan. Like, he knew he was going to get his money. Nobody wants Keiko because one he's not as dynamic as Le vian bell. And to because he is there to give away too much for me. I'm sure it kind of feels like the ugly duckling, right? I don't know what's going to happen with them. And I think he's gonna be after the draft someone signs them that except when a couple years ago, Stephen drew. I remember the he he didn't get selling a while. Terrible. Right. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Like the same exact case. You're listening to even forty someone. Someone gets even due to listen, and we'll be like, Stephen German. Hope you're doing Good Hope you're joint late fielder. And we'll get telling the cut right just plan that little bit where we say be doing good, Stephen. And then just take this. Speaking speaking of that, actually because me and my brothers were talking talking about this, right and. We're were actually bringing you up a little bit. Like mentioned you kind of funny. Speaking about phones and three do you? Remember that footlocker commercial? It was with the Ben Simmons Karl Anthony towns Devon Booker Russell and Dangelo Russell Simmons. He's like asking them all for vice. And then like the all advice, not like the end of the deal is lasting is. Like, you got a phone and he's like, yeah. Let me see it. And he just like shops it off the balcony into the water like the Nikki young. Yeah. That was that that the most underrated yet. I like if you know, it's like. That is a great commercial lake is looking trash right now because trade hope bed. Simmons listening not a big fan of yours, man. The core is that at the game on Saturday. Games. Jared Dudley was in your head. If you're listening there less than baseball podcasts. Be. Cool. I'm kind of flat. Or you think he'd be listening very vocal at social media. We chaptered. He's always. The old man. I love jet jelly because these means Tim park. And Tony Parker combined. It's kind of true. And like this guy. No one's heard of 'em. Really unless you know, your your long island's your front row player. Right. Like unless you're like the a real fan of the team. He's been on a little bit of a journeyman. No one knows about this guy the entire year. No one's gonna word about him for the now this. Just telling people, and I love it. And I I'm not really a Big Ben Simmons fan. I mean pull up from three once. Jack, you'll get the same amount of career three pointers incentives sus why he's got zero three pointers career to I think he's only. Yeah. I didn't know it was a literal zero. That makes me mad. I'm kind of upset now in the, but like, even the honest, he's threes. Once in a while, not use definitely working on. But also about iana. So it's like when you have a guy who yawns the frigging transformer. He's more dynamic than Ben Simmons. I you know, what I'm saying. That guy is going to that guy is going to bully anyone and that he's going to jump to dunk as k with them. But I know he is like last year he like who's a twenty something once every like two or three. Respectable back to least it's better than Ben. The mill. Yeah. All right. So that was good talk. If you guys like that, you could you could shut us out yard spoiler baby on Instagram. That was a good little little free advertisement for myself because this is my show anyway, so next to Vlad Guerrero junior. And it's looking like the reports or kind of a gang taken away that he's not going to be starting. They said he he's going to be pretty close to come pretty close. Yes. I mean, let him play to like we're sitting let the like two years. Now, he's been writing four hundred the only thing is I what he was like nineteen last year. Now, I think he just turned twenty last year. Like he was young nineteen year old kid. You don't really have to rush home for like. Now, you see like how good he played in spring training. I think you only has a couple of tool runs this. Was an Adler moonshot at sunny a car. Right. But like he he's racing. Those. Racing. Those guys bad in like three three whatever, dude. Like, he's absolutely raking. It's no doubt. The Blue Jays can use his hell games them to sell. Take tickets headers tickets can help you when games guys can help you. He's he's absolute study should be in the majors. He will be the face of Toronto. The second is cleats touched. The the weird Asha dirt have own Rogers said I hope we see him soon man, especially coming from. You know, Yankee fans him playing the alias will price. Times. So like, I'm actually pretty excited for that. Now, also he said at the same time the only thing about it is he's on the Blue Jays. So it's like we'll give Jay one good guys. What hits a home run every couple of games solo shots at a ninety one nine three pretty much. So that's why I'm kind of okay with it. But he's going to be a beast is dad was vs whole favorite ballot rethinking g top it dirt. I know he's going to be nuts, man. So he's. Good friend. Good for you. Vata Vlad junior stocks. Your organization is kind of like a joke, and they're not going to bring you up. If you want you could sign with the Yankees more. We'll get we have we've opened we definitely. Jamie. I'll take out at dinner to go. Is your favorite place? Pedo Hooper's we harangue I'll bring. Of bring a little Spanish English dictionary. And we'll be on our way. But yes, so now, we're we're jumping a little bit back to the Yankees. Right. Because we want to talk about Clint Frazier and judge we don't about Clint Clint gleyber Luke void, man. They really been the glue of these guys help the Yankees. I think a lot of these guys had to grow up a little bit fast before he's still a twenty two year old guy. He's turned twenty two in December. Like, he's still a young guy. People don't realize like he'd still be like in college. He's only this is only like Allender. Hallander you begin ready? He began ready for the for the NFL draft coming up if this guy play football Winstead, he's got a year of baseball under his belt on all star game. And I mean, he's really just taking this leadership role. Well, Clint phrase like we said he's been a beast and the cleats are. It's every. Yes. The concord low I've been looking he sponsorship yet. I don't know he this incident custom under. Is it doesn't the free advertisement? Good for you. But day like they put spikes in shoes. So he's Lurie wearing shoes out there. I've been saying that are that are just have spikes on. That's gotta be super like I love Jordan sound like that like retro one joins case have a pair. I cannot move very well in them yelling. And this guy's wearing like just wearing shoes out there with spice, this kind of impressive. Jill. Hey, look, I can't believe he's doing that. You're gonna keep looking to send in the shoes cleats. Do whatever you want. But it's like when you see like a bunch of these guys who had like these cleats shoes. They're actually like made to be clear. He's literally wearing like a pair of shoes off the shelf. I'm sure it's got like thousand dollar real ones wherever because he goes ball out like that. A ball out. Yeah. He's got. He's got that small deal. If you're making the minimum four hundred fifty five hundred thousand you can get a thousand you can get ten pairs of thousand dollar shoes and be. He's five and you're fine. Take it, you know, what? Hopefully, they can take an extra one hundred. I don't know about that. Yeah. He's still to get a house and stuff. I'm sure. It was also technically like year like two and a half. How this clip Frazier twenty four twenty four twenty five I think he'll be turning twenty five. I think he's still the twentieth. Yeah. Yeah. It's just crazy. How you look at him. And they look at Harper and trout they've been league for what six years. This. Two years old. Trout trouble. He's going to be eight to be twenty twenty or twenty nine. Yeah. Burly august. We was going to be twenty eight and Harper things can be twenty seventy seven. I'm always four still three years back. I mean, those guys are free. If you can't compare yourself to I mean that shows like nightmare, airing your career course. But I'm just saying like they have an extra three years, right and those three years or like MVP year, right? But also Clint Frazier has some tough if you were a guy, and you're the number of prospect, which confronted really wasn't for the Enke's and angels are nationals at that time. Still probably at the time. Now, you see once soda Invicta rollers those guys have starting spot, and they're kind of locked in when you compete for a spot the New York Yankees. You don't just have a spot yet. You guys if you if you kind of mess up there. No plug someone else in it wasn't. He didn't even make the team had writing train and it didn't help also last year the concussion and left field. Remember cats names, he said he'd like forget his own Cass names. I definitely serious and that really messed them up for the whole year. Last year. So he's definitely had a little bit of a tough road. But. Glenn is doing well now shadows to Clint Frazier and Clint Frazier. You're listening. Huge fan, but he loves us. He's got a poster of us. I mean, there's the picture of corey's with Dr. Only thing up seven cliff for. That he had to cut his hair. I love the long hair. Tradition man, the red sounder. We saw little carrots. Here's a cool, dude. Man. He just like I don't like saying the word like swag like that's like middle school like Clint Frazier swag like that wise. Cool if you just soom like wearing like, whatever. 'cause I baseball players aren't like celebrities like football player NBA players were like they're constantly have cameras on the before. And after gaining walked what they're wearing guys tolerant. Clint frazier. I've noticed dude, they're always looking at rash. So I do I do mess with that. But yes, the Eli's like we're saying is looking kind of nuts right now Boston sweeps Tampa Bay and the Yanks Lee now is only two and a half games back without judge to judge. Now, it's yoga leak. Yoga leak it. Could it could other deal stint that's going to be a mystery? Right right now. And now says it's a boon right away was like he's gonna on the press conference are like is there any way he's not on I own like with this season. He's just put everyone. And now he's saying it's a pretty significant strain. So we can be seeing no judge bleak shrine. You can't you can't swim. And also about this. We're talking STAN was on a ten day. I l for his bicep it's been like to retrieve. They they completely like what thing for someone else? Get hurt. So your tension goes there. All right. Don't don't lose anything about Stanton. The guys like long twentieth. Armed Ben back way hanging off his body. And no one even seems to care about judges oblique. Two of mystery everything Severino Hicks potential is judged the everyone's a mystery Didi at least we knew what happy. Like. Then injured his thumb though. That was last year, you know, he didn't he needed surgery on his thumb it after the after the year Neely? Yes. And then all of a sudden now, he's got Tommy Johnson. I mean, like, I would not know that that's how. Remember the playoff game when he sled. Stump. Okay. And they still played them. But he said he's he needed surgery after the playoff run the most. It's just the Yankees. So. It's just it's like, it doesn't even matter. It's mystery because they're not anything the Yankees. They're still staying afloat. Like, we said, they're two and a half games back out of first place. And I was thinking because the Red Sox swept the race. The only time I'm okay with the Red Sox ever winning is if they have to be in last place more fourth gangs has been one or two and it team. They sweep is the the one they to dance dancer to the one only way. I'm okay with it. So the Red Sox thank you for that. And only combine reds taken down the poster of us. Ready to throw the. Big picture of Kim Jong Hoon picture. They're big self portrait. Then there's us three which is darts. My new favorite jokes our faith aids. But yeah. So I mean, what are we thinking about the Enke's? We are. We still feeling good Yelm that next man up mentality. I like that. I try to stay like like five hundred once again. Right. Ever. They come back. We don't we don't. We don't out dude. Like another Parma's thinking like maybe like if this ever happens again. And like we keep these podcasts and like I get in contact with the Yankees. Maybe they'll run out of guys in the be like all right, Andrew, man. Get a helmet. You're like crazy are the new guy. Mike Ford was like an undrafted for Princeton. Like, what are the odds that you find this Ford, if you're listening open, my yeah? Get you on the show Mike for I was watching. They were like, yeah. This guy had an offer to Stanford Duke. But he went to Princeton two way player Greek. I'm Mike creek four Mike Ford. Another store actually bring up come trying to get Matt lip gone the shows and that look good. If you're listening plays AAA for square scores Scranton Wilkes floor, and he actually met my friend at a bar the day, and they were like kinda hammered, and I'm not gonna say like some stuff. They're talking about predict get my friends sisters number and they were talking about the yard work on my friend said look after the damn that. He said that he kind of leads you get a bunch of annoying kids. They're like China like say stuff, and I was just like do look out for salmon of DM's. I yeah, it'd be looking for it hasn't opened it yet. So Matt liftoff, you're listening open of you. And we're gonna get. On the show. We're waiting for it. So yeah, now latte will what we have Lassie Rin down. I'm sure we'll talk about is the laser it the laser Luria. No. I mean. Yeah. You just gotta send like even if he threw it into the stands. Nobody's going to be right adman. You just gotta set that is Cory. What do you? What do we think? Guys, got a canon. Got to lash against the angels. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Who do you got a better arm him or cesspits and cesspits when he was back on the this? I'm gonna still go leery. I'm the guy I've never seen a ball that high before on TV. The home right for right? We're not even talking. I have so many things to say first off Laureano, what are you taking a free kitten actual cannon with a cannibal or as arm on probably taking his arm because actually don't know how far cannonballs go. But Secondly is this guy could have been on top lays just for the just for throw. If if he didn't even rival just bounce off the wall, and he wasn't through that ball three hundred something easy easily. Yeah. But good player catcher hung back that open get the double play Justin Smoak by was so confused. The ball was thirty in my hand. And now, it's in jersey. Far last night like. Oh, yeah. Do know Laureano absolute beast, I'm excited as more always on top place for something. And not even his arm though. Like, he's got two or three home run robberies already this year. He's like the Kevin cure my. Yeah. He is he's he's gone on the White Sox. Go go. Yeah. Robin homeless. He's the guy the guy the athletes need, they need a. Yeah. They got a couple of quiet guys. Like, Matt Ryan Chapman, medals. They do their child. Right. Laurie is like that possess just signed Chris Davis to plot. That's he is someone they need. Because this is my thing. Everyone would be like, oh, you go Jabeen and Olsen. Chris Davis as I get whever. Wasn't chime Hughes platinum glove, and yeah, he's and Chris Davis, right, obviously, consistently toured Bank to four. Homerun super consistent. Right. Three years. VS lettuce was all those guys. They're still. They're always barely barely wildcard f. Even and then they get they got knocked LSU by the Yankees. Well, maybe this Laureano puts them over the top. What like I think she is. There sparked you know, like, I was they have guys, but he might be the thing that sparks because he's been fantastic. Definitely. So four four we wrap up any any finishing thought last Oskar, and you wanna get out. The Mets Brooklyn nets and seven. Since carl. Nothing. Really? I mean, just me. It's shown another Yankee. Mike talk men. I love this. Oh, yeah. Yeah. I don't know Colorado. And I mean, I just love Sonoma. We're gonna sock killing we'll have to get a show. Just just dedicated Mike. Yeah. Like one of the big boys two guys dollars. I'm going to tell my kids. I was at the Mike talk mean game when it gets boss when he like a home three or money. So I got. I got hopes. He he came on the show. The cool, dude. He knows what's up. So definitely. Char- of that the future for. Yes. Thank you guys for coming back on we had to guess against recaps to kuri Carl peyot this four zero this the trio and then me excluded slower in my studio gave basement room for my job excluded. Definitely we every you know, whatever two weeks or so every couple weeks are recaps because those good time talking about corey's face at someone's house with. Pride the best Joe between nineteen and yes. So that's going to conclude this show. Thank you guys for tuning in. I'm Andrew, and this was the artwork.
Episode 81: With John Sterling, The Voice Of The New York Yankees
"The. Our tied at five to go. The body of these Aaron Boone the leader his first of the game. He's. Just to the first. What's up? What's happening? Welcome to another dishing of the short porch presented by arsenal. Sports. I'm your host hugs alongside the other side of the laptop Tommy smokes Tomsk belly. What's going on? What's up a new new intro for us kind of through little slight herbal ner officially presented by barstool sports for the first episode. I was kinda hoping I'm usually in that intro, you'll run through about five different nicknames. Or so for me kinda kept it brief this time. But it's uh give it like, a B shoe. We start over. She was on gotta keep authentic. We wanted on the first one. Yeah. I mean, I changed up is. I really don't write. Anything dies is whatever's in my head. I just throw out there. So that's all you got today. But yes, we're Parcells ourselves worth Bach. Esperance's? Awesome. Took his eighty episodes. Right. This is number eighty this is eighty one eighty one. Okay. Yeah. So, but I mean, this was always the goal. So it's kinda cool that we. Only hit it an hour. Take the shit's in the fucking moon. We talk about the last show like we're gonna have guys willy Cologne. Come on, Frankie Borelli mardi mush. We have figured out something regular at gras because we gotta use his brain somehow in gambling way or something. But there's something where people wanna hear him regularly that I, you know, like five minute segment or something we'll figure if you guys have ideas for anything shoot us. You know, my time is the whatever the short porch EM's for segments, whatever. But. Yeah, I mean, if you've never listened before I recommend, you know, going back to the Clint Clint Frazier interview was great, the Michael king just did was awesome. But I mean, you know, you know, you're getting with article eighty episodes is how you really have to do it. Exactly, I'm scared to go back to our first. Like now, I'm getting don't definitely don't do. We heard I like five or ten probably like tough there. We probably all over the place a little more refined. Now. I mean, you know, what you're getting with us on a Barcelo podcast. Yeah. We're gonna talk Yankees for sure is complete Yankees podcast. But you know, we're going to be, you know, we're we're fans we're not going to break down analytics for you. And you know, we're not gonna bitch in moments. What we are going to bitch moan about a lot of things. But we don't care anybody. You know, we're just gonna we're just fans thought we hate Greg bird at slogan. Nothing's gonna change there. But yeah. So I mean, let's get into it. I guess it's first few topics here. So you're gonna get sterling a little bit. We'll going to do about fifteen twenty minutes of, you know, actually Yankee news again sterling than DMZ end the show that will be essentially how we do the Thursday episode. This'll be pretty much the same structure, but slew Severino is out for all of April. Bob, fucking nightingales. Tweet goddess got back at us. He said Luis Severino coffin hilly back in two weeks. He said that on March six couldn't be more wrong. The guy gets gets the worst information possible. I don't understand how it continues to do his job trust these people that are never right, but Severino is now out for now. All of all April ends may. I is now the new target date. It's not good sucks. I should've almost paid Bob Nightingale tweet out that Severino's out the whole season to pay him to tweet out. You know, the opposite information to actually want to happen die them. It might even worse than he might judge drew. That's true bay. I mean, it's sucks. I mean, you know, from spring training storyline standpoint mean the offense has been really good, but you know, kind of sucky storyline. So far to spring training. You lose your race for at least a month of the season. I've feeling it seems like it's going to be more. Aaron Hicks will get to hurt to you got the Dell Matanzas which will talk. About. I mean, you know, a few things you don't really want to be dealing with especially two of the bigger injuries. They have Severino at Hicks or two guys that they just extended during the off season, which really more more extensions. Please yet. No more sensitive seems to be the curse of the extension. But no, I mean, they'll they'll just have to fight through for a month or so without Severino. He's gonna come back and full form, and you know, be sevi- for the final five months season. That's fine. Maybe it's almost better that you're gonna limit his innings and Dell outfielder string lob you're saying into skies kinda maybe like because he whether down towards the end now, exactly. But I don't know it could be a blessing guys. But it's tough to look at a shoulder injury. And be like, oh, yeah. Hell, yeah. Like, you know, this is going to be great for the end or back right now. We're worried about it could it end up being a bussing in the skies. Yes. But right now, I'm worried about it. Because I, you know, the rotation was a bit of a question more coming into the air to begin with because you do have so many qu. Questions. You would see going with his heart PAKs has his injury history. Tanaka is ticking time bomb to a degree. So thirty have one injuries. Not great. Where would you say? You're confident Lee kinda set it. But do you think he's back in may? Or do you think it's worse eating it's June. I don't think he's back may I think it'd be back. I would say close in June. I may I of how to guess, okay. Didn't news is. I mean, it's still the Yankees. You know, it's kind of a next man up attitude for now looks like in hold down the rotation the they can get through April. I'm not I have no concerns about that the schedule pretty soft aside from three in Houston and Boston coming here for two. I think they opened with hosting Baltimore than Detroit. And then and then at Baltimore. So I mean like they should look it off to a fine start. They should have no problems. If the Orioles play the keys like they did last year could be tough. I would go with the strategy this year beating the Orioles. I think it'd be good to go moving forward. We would we would win more games this year. We did that. So oh, another thing is David Chow guy. So he usually does a Twitter Dr essentially don't know how much can trust them. He admittedly said I mean, I only know what people tweet at me about the situation. But he said, obviously, this is not great news. Seems like may I is. In the next check in date, not return target. At least there's no announcement of surgery. I mean, this is terrible. We'd all around. I saw that on Saturday. Wasn't great kind of. Doc. In terms of people replace every now term seems like right now, they're trying to do it internally to make our him on Johnny was Anya and inane that's popped up. How kind of a guy who's victimized this over the years, but he seems to figure things out Lewis Sessa, and I know wanted I want to reach through the screen slap you in the face because you have in our intro notes. Just notes for the show you have Sesa real deal question more, and then his numbers. No, no. He's not the real do. How many times Rena play this game with Lisa? How many times we're gonna let ourselves get sucked into have our hearts broken with a three and a third, you know, four hits five run start. Guys. Get one running thirteen innings spring thirteen strikeouts. One walk all numbers retraining hero. His big problem was control a figure that out for now. They're gonna untethering he's in the rotation on opening day. He's going to be your your fourth or fifth starter. Which is horrify. But I don't disagree. You have to give them one more shot. I just every guy we talked to down spring told us how says just the man and funny and everyone in every and everyone's confident him, I don't know. It's. The fact that they are looking internally, they're not pursuing anyone like Kyko. They don't they're considering kaikal. What says like GIO Gonzalez? Maybe right. So Heyman said, and this is Hanes take with a grain of salt. But he said that he offered a GO. It's really not close not great deal optimism at the moment. But there's reasonably both sides might wanna come together soon enough. And I don't know smitty came up to me on Friday. It was like he would shitting green is again, we got GIO Gonzalez, obviously was wrong currently and he still region whenever restricting comes up with a source. It's just this source. Wherever has the Phillies has never been right. It's he said Machado was done handshake agreement in napn, he said a single GO. Now, it's only been a few days, and they very well could still be talking but hasn't happened. He said, I mean, I don't remember him being saying the source about Harper, so funny. Yeah. Replay or except the ones actually get. Yeah. This many Phillies source. I don't I don't I don't trust them. But I do bring small face whenever he walks over. Because I know it's just not gonna happen. Whatever he says. Would want yoga dollars though. Yeah. Yeah. I think we've talked about this. How he's he's a crafty lefty, he's younger than people like think think he's only thirty one nerdy three. All right. So what's that's still younger than I thought? He was don't use thirty thirty six. He's never been hurting his career. That's very interesting point is never been her. I like that. I would have not have expected that. Yeah. He's a guy who just can come in eat innings give you five or six innings of two to three run ball. Hopefully in the stopgap veteran presence a own if you were to go to Jimmy from onto spring too. So like, I wouldn't you'll only got set lasagna hasn't been stellar. But you know, the stuff it was on brings he can he can do the job. So for now making get past April. They can't they'll be if it has to go into may and June. Then I get worried, but for now, everyone just relax if it's it's just April, and and he can come back in may at some point in may. That's great off the for the surgery word. Great. So this remaining con here where you know for people in the show, we overreact everything so trying to change that a little bit. I'm going to stay up. So say the good the good thing. And the bad thing is the good thing is the Incas have a loaded bullpen. So I don't think they're going to go with any opener games where it's a full bullpen game. But you know of Sessa does get knocked out in the third or fourth inning. We can rely on the bullpen to shut down for six seven innings. If necessary the downside to that is I don't wanna be taxing the bullpen with ill ton of innings in April. Yeah, I don't have that don't need to that. That's how you lose a great Bolton fairly really quickly. Moving on Aaron Hicks. Another bad news will it's it's more optimistic though. He's missing he will not be on the opening day roster. They'll be on the isle I'm not calling. That's the deal. Will we will only? Call the deal. Yeah. We are deal podcast wanna be make very clear, but it's you know, tissue his back, which is not a spot. I wanna be you know, fucking with. That's not great to quarters on shot dot you'd be ready for days not going to be. He said he's very optimistic. He'll be there for the second series against Detroit, which is fine with this. Does mean is that bird in void or likely to make the opening day roster together 'cause you take kicks off you need kind of left the in there, and you have the open open spot. It's probably gonna be bird along with weight. But I mean, that's very temporary thing by Detroit. You know, you might be just sending Burr back down or getting out all get in setting the sun, whatever the real battle. Now will be weighed in Frazier who makes it at that spot. Probably go wait versatility. But it's up here. Yeah. I I hate back injuries for guys who are injury that that at first the guys used extended seven years. I mean, this doesn't seem to be too serious. But you know, a guy who is injury prone. I was like, well, he's a great player, really talented. No. But the downside to extending seven years is he has all his injuries. And then he immediately has an injury wanna worst part. Your body won't have not great. Not great. You don't want it lingering back in drill season. That said it does seem like they're more optimistic on him. That's ever. No. Yeah. As far as roster maneuver goes. I was at first. I mean, my first thought was this great far guy. Clint the he's going to be able to make the team. But then when he break it down a little bit further like you said that could go to Wade may be carrying bird envoy to. So I'm not sure how they end up to. I think tolerate is on this team. I think tolerate is definitely on this team. Just because of the versatility they like came. He can't play the outfield to help spell Hicks the first series while he's out. So you're confident that it's going to be bird over Frazier and just the left the thing they want an extra lefty baton. They're Hicks was the switch header just for the weekend. I don't know how many a battle get be bench player. Hopefully, avoid were white will just play. But I just from whatever whatever read today is people think it's burdened will both be on the opening day roster. I mean, they both have good spring state of hit a void. Hey, one absolute gargantuan homerun today and then burden. Oppa Otto homerun. So they both have good springs. The way I've like will transitions the burden Voight away have looked at this whole spring is that if Voight showed signs that you know, it wasn't a fluke last year. He was just the same guy, which he pretty much has been, you know, he's got ten RBI's. Now, I think now I don't really give fuck about spring stashes kind of how you look. He'd had the spring. We want him to have an my mind. It's almost a relevant or dozen situation. Because we know was gonna have a good spring. He does this. And you know, he people like all he, you know, he looks. He's invest shape was life. He looks locked in. He'll say different player to play whatever yada, yada. We know that bullshit Voight looks the same as he did in August September October. It's his job. My bird can do nothing at this point. That's just. I agree. And it seems like Voight is winning over. Aaron Boone nail. You were talking about the shirt. He was wearing the out. Kind of telltale side and Greg bird how to see that in just just how miserable that make you feel. I mean. Joe Torry doing that? Tori would like now. But yeah, that's I mean that stuff at stuffing position battle. And it's the most talked about being this spring, and you're hitting well, you're hitting over three hundred you've got a few homers. And and you're and you're just wearing the other guy shirt from his own website at the you think maybe like birth burn magic bird seeing if the first time, he'll you fucking kidding me. What if that tell off because he doesn't care? What if that's how told bird that voice on the job? I hate grad. You wanna come into my office like chat for few minutes as he's wearing the Luke Luke Voight. Louis Vitton is like. Unless you know, void actually won the first baseman job. You know, we still might carry you for the first series. But I would just be unbelievably cruel. What have you like you're starting rotation this year? It was really no shirt or on a stupid. Are you fucking stupid? This is why you're not started racing. You'd think these things when I saw that when I saw tweet that just made my day. This is so funny. I became an guy I was like on the fence now balloon guy through and through. In other bad news will the last bad news. We have a promise don't dances is law city. We he does every year restarts out throwing like eighty nine miles an hour world like what is happening here. But he is claimed it's his that's his way of building up. You know, which I also don't understand we were at the spring game. I have no idea how your and majoring pitcher throws ninety nine hundred miles an hour, and you can just throw eighty nine on our fastballs. Like, how do you take and build up nocco full if you're pitching, so many you're basically lobbing the ball over, and it's eighty nine miles an hour a house, apostle, it doesn't make you think. It's either got to be like fifty or something when you're really just no effort or you have to be at full capacity full ninety five or that is bizarre to take just that much off almost seems more difficult than just firing away. Exactly. So the bad news today down. Gary caught him for the first time today down explains down loss ity by saying he's still not where is arm. Strict needs to be lethal come back at some point though. If I go and opening day, I'll be happy. That's not exactly the bus news. I don't like the trajectory. The story is take a couple of weeks ago. What's all? Yeah. This is what he always does. He he's laughing reporters. I'll be fine. I'll be fine. Then he's like. Yeah. You know, I'll be all right with ninety five opening day aren't Boone's a little concern. Gary Sanchez like what the hell's going on? I do not like this trajectory at all. It's kinda like when you were in in school was a kid and you have a big project coming up. It's doing a month like onto into weeks fine right to die. Mum checks and hey as the project on I it's fine still not differ two weeks. You know, we got the idea head. It's great. We'll make it happen. A week goes by oh student week. I'll do three days find him. I like that school and then literally day before school day for its do. And you just have started. It seems like what we're doing Delon hair down stopping at ninety two. Gary Gary said he went out there today. Just be like what's happening? He he is he never caught him this spring so far for as he stunk. He said by the lower veal out. He's what's what's happening Boone's concerned a little bit said a little bit. But I mean, they're confident he'll get it back up. Not what I wanna hear. So that's three really bad news stories to start this podcast. Not great optimistic news. I don't know if this is optimistic news, actually, this is also been is. But you ellsbury after showed up the spring training. Wow. We didn't think it would happen. To be fair. I still haven't seen him. It's true. All I saw the picture of the back of his head be made. Brad weeded at could be. Yeah. That could be anybody. So he could have an impostor out. There could have a stunt double just you know, the way he's walking around the facilities making people only see him at a certain angle is could be really masterfully done. I know EC that Cutty said that he left the clubhouse walking gingerly. He's like when you're you know at high school, and you're like fake being sick. When you wake up in the morning because you don't want to go to school to your parents master master Jacoby, ellsbury just does not want to play baseball. He's going to be walking around the facility with a little lint PR limp. If finally showed up because you just fucking show up. It's been two years to get my money keep hiding. Yeah. So I'll be honest. There was a part of me when I saw this diet. I got little suck. Then I was like what if Kobe healthy? This must be like you and Louis Sesa. But I was thinking not Kobe's healthy. What if he has what if he they responding screws the team? That's what happens now that's fair. But there was a little glimmer in my eye or sticking. Wow. One after Kobe, contributing player this crazy to think that you're Kobe was a part of the team that was facing Astros on twenty seventeen LCS how crazy? Not to think about this last time we've seen it. I know, but it's been so long. Yeah. That's even crazier. That's the last time. We've seen him in that series. Like it was a decade ago. I'll bring you back down there, though, hope cleared up. He said Elber is not close to being an option replace Hicks. Elbert hitting a t and playing catch at short distances. He's just playing catch. I even I don't know if he's even back the writing on the ground, which is Elway versus flag round is one of the best robberies in sports right now. Yeah. Just I don't think this is Elvis. I him showing up means south any gets. He heard people like us doing segments were in the world Jacoby ellsbury where we legitimately start to believe that he was missing. And we're going through Instagram photos and his Twitter. It was very likely. It's go missing. I think he may have caught wind of that. And said art, I guess I do have to actually show up. Maybe maybe his family like they ran out of money. And like he just has to show up light save the family 'cause they're just out of money any star filed cashing checks ago. I thought he was still cashing with insurance some you're right. Alright. Yankees are the ones that save money when he's out. He no he still he still cash. Baseball's ridiculous. You've just paid whenever NFL you cut. Guilt. Get paid and baseball you need actually show up. Yes. Oh, he's supposed to speak to reporters on Monday and shows face that will be something the first question better be like a meme where you've been it's like they should quiz them to make sure it's the real Jacoby. Yes. I like that just just ask that human questions on Bob when he sees quiz in mister crabs fun at which is the real, Mr. grabs. That's what they have to do to make sure it's not some stunt double imposter. Crush. None of that. Would just talk about mystic. None of this this podcast. I will get into John sterling now to talk about a little bit. It's forty minutes. We only ask for twenty the man just kept talking. The man had a great time even communists at the end, which was wild. It's it's been tat. We we honestly talk about everything. Current state of the Yankees. We talk about his whole life in his streak of never missing games. Now, the stuff he's got funny. Joe buck story in their Wellesz. We got Welson there. So about just state of baseball. I mean, really everything we touch on everything from you know, what you you know, what you wanted to hear what I'm sure some people on it here about his thoughts. And he's off season cone after any of the big not getting any of the big guns. You know, how he comes up with calls and stuff, hopefully, everything you could want it with astronaut sterling Starling got to sure we miss some stuff. But I think we got a lot of I was walking through Grand Central yet. Grand Central on Saturday of. Heading to Brooklyn. I don't want to. But I went to Brooklyn and short porch guy stopped me, and he's short porch dot me up and as like walking away as sterling Monday, it goes out your sewn street that sick I'm going to didn't go. There Starling whatever. And. So he was looking early science. We saw someone on Stonestreet who also mentioned the short port. And and he was always the next up. I said tomorrow or Monday, we got John Starling. So imagine that was the same guy. Tell me some v. Yeah. It was very fun. My friend was like is that guy have any idea not treating talking God, sterling, whatever. But without further ado here is John sterling. All right. We're here. Now with the voice of the New York Yankees, the legend himself Johnstone, John how you doing? I'm doing great nice to see you guys beautiful day in Tampa beautiful as we continue through spring training. Yeah. So we're getting the spring training. We're few weeks, and what are your thoughts for the team as you've watched so far as we head into twenty nineteen. Well, it really has nothing to do with what they've shown in spring training. Right. I said during the winter. And I obviously we'll say it right now the aggies have such a deep team such a deep talented team that they have no excuses. They can go all the way. Now, you said to me. Well, don't you think that true ab- Austin or Houston or the dodgers or the cubs were maybe the Phillies though, right? Yes. But I think the Yankees are so deep and so talented for me, they have no excuse. I mean and also New York as you know, winning is absolutely. The only thing. So that's that's where they can go this here. What did you think of their off-season? Obviously, they improved roof surprised all didn't make a harder push for Harper Machado after hearing about it for years would've gone after is Harper left hand hitter in such a right hand hitting lineup. Imagine how great it would be. If you had judge hitting second in Harper hitting third credible Tarlo fourth. But I love what Brian Cashman. Did. You know, what you saw last year is the the dodgers and the Red Sox were able to change their lineup on a daily basis as so many different people who could play the spots. And that's kind of what would Brian did, you know, certainly filled out his pitching. Tab. He got a big starter. Paxton a re-signed hap- he signed out to vino he re-signed Zach Britton. So LeMay who do LeMay LeMay? He was well, then then bringing in the Mayhew Lewinsky, you know, with with DD out for a couple of months as I say, they have they have no excuse if too low they signed a shortstop, gut hurts Amaro, they play labor tours there and play LeMay you second. So they have a very team. It's probably the deepest team since they won the World Series in no nine probably it's been think. So. Yeah. Very very deep bulk up. Now, what could first of all, you know, we're going to see an read all these predictions. Right. Everyone has soda we Susan. I do it for is nothing. But how do you know who's going to get injured and how long the going to be out of the aggies? Who would they won one hundred games us you judgments seven weeks heckling and Sanchez, I think probably missed a month of more than. Ed. So and Stanton was averaged by his standard, right? You know? So. I think they they have the chances put it that for sure within the team. There's a big position ballot going on. Which is something we really haven't had in quite some time. It's big like a football thing. But baseball, we don't see much just with the Yankees. But Greg bird, Luke Voight at first base is no while you see it as much as because they carry so many dang pitches. These guys only pitch one inning. And it's changed so much since I was a little boy Casey's Yankees. They might have had nine pitchers or ten pitchers on a twenty five man. Number on the ball club. And so we have to do this in my head quickly. So that would leave fifteen position players. So you start eight there was no D age. Yes. Seven guys on the bench, Casey pension form in the second. Third inning. Right. And now, it's totally changed. Totally the opposite. So you only have three or four guys on the bench. The is all the American League teams who carry thirteen pitches. They wanna get have three guys on the bench. Ridiculous crazy. So I I mentioned it last night on our broadcast. I don't know when this is going on. But anyway, we had a game the other night on the air. And I mentioned how unfair it is. You know, because I think void can really hit. I don't think that it was a fluke last year. And I've been a big bird fan for longtime prototypical left hitting first baseman who thirty run. So it's too bad that undoubtedly one of them's going back. Yeah. What do you who? Do you think will will win the job at the end of the who do you think has like police right now? Well, I guess boy. Well, that's what Brian Cashman says, you know, that Voight he void head of an ominous year if they had one at all, maybe people would have recognized it. He might have. Hit one home run every ten at bats just Ruthenian and then he hit about three twenty. So that's terrible for Greg bird. But it's such a long season. There's so many injuries you you'll probably end up seeing both of them at this injuries. And all that you mentioned how deep the roster is the season. Is there a player, you know, maybe a little bit more under the radar that you think is going to end up having a very big breakout season and be a big part of the team that maybe we wouldn't expect. I don't think you can call it a breakout season. Who's Gary Sanchez has done it before? Right. Ridiculously at one eighty six and. Though, I think he could really help the Yankees by having a breakout. Re breakout b break would do it again. I don't think you could think I think Frazier will go back because they want him to get at bats. I think right. You know, we're big. Yeah. It seems like when we record this. We're we're midway in spring training. Right. But if there are no more injuries, and they're always injuries. I think Frazier would go back maybe they would keep Wade because he could play infield outfield. We just talked to him last night actually tolerate. It seems like he's right now a locked to make the team. I would think does this versatility great speed versatility. And the only going to they're going to carry thirteen pitches. You know, they are exactly do you think a year understands belt in New York will pay dividends you think we're gonna see a different Stanton this year. A rod. Yeah. Rod needed the year. Well, he's not as flexible at bat as a right, Alex is a really good hitter Stanton power hitter. And you would love him. To lay off the right hand slider going down on a way. Nice. This take it. I really think that a lot. I saw about a strike out the other day. My engineer got something for us called Roku. So we can see any games televise at any time. And I saw guy struck out outside that I wonder if he thinks self when I see that pitch coming don't swing out on strikes. But for the most part, that's that's a ball. That's low and away. Yes. I'm hoping that STAN would be even better because of a year in New York, right? How much pressure how much do strike outs bother? They're sort of two schools of thought one is well and out is an out on the other one is well, you have to put the ball in play where do you sort of land on that it up all those me very much? I knew I knew that if well I always feel first of all in. Let's take Sanchez. I saw him. Do it. So many times the second base him move over on the shortstop side. He's few steps away from second base hard ground ball gets it out or double play. If he waited a little longer the same dang ground ball to the first bayside of second. It's Basit the runner at first goes to third. So I believe the Yankees have to incorporate some of that doesn't mean they can't swing and hit home runs. But at some point you down a run in the eighth ending this guy. Second no one out and you don't score. That's your fault. All you have to put the ball play. And I'll tell you guys a story, which is why this is in my jeans, my DNA or love nineteen forty nine. The jail the Red Sox by game and oddly enough, they only had Saturday and Sunday at Yankee Stadium against the Red Sox man, even they fell behind four nothing on Saturday. They came back. They won the game. So now Sunday winner take all for the American League. And I think resute oh tripled. And Boston because of all these great hitters in back of Henrik. Tommy Henrich sitting third Damasio sitting fourth Yogi on up they play they played their their infield back and this is. For the pennant and Tommy Henrich choked up and and just directed ground ball to second other runs scored. And that was the only run scorch of the eighth inning. When everything went while the Yankees won the game. Obviously one the first their five world championships. And I I mentioned that all time of Henrik choking up giving himself up just hitting a little ground ball to to the second baseman. Nowadays, they probably would bring the infield up, you know. So. Switching gears more little bit about use witching from the Yankees how on earth. Have you never missed a game since nineteen eighty one. Well, it is. I don't understand it as we sit here. And I hope it continues. I always say it began in the very beginning of November in nineteen eighty one. Right. So now, this my thirty ninth years that amazing and credible. And and there are five years in Atlanta. When I was doing the hawks and Braves that was doing about two hundred twenty games that year, and I guess because I love the games. And thank God. I I've have good genes, I've stayed very healthy. And you know, people as well as the day when you really was sick. And you. I guess a few days. But for the most part it hasn't been a big problem. I have no idea. That's a good answer. I have no idea. But I look forward to the games. I get a kick out of the games and some how I get my body. There is a field to be. I mean, you're the true Armand you've pass Lou Garrick and Cal Ripken junior. Of course there the head of play only run my mouth. But I do think it's a big thing. And I don't think anyone in the business cares. And we do. I'll tell you the story. I get a car. Going to away games coming back and we flew into Newark. And this guy is going the back way. Which even I know. I have a terrible center direction. And I get off the the turnpike on forty six and doesn't matter. How you go back way and you wind up in cliffside park, and you go down the route five to Edgewater where I live, and we went through a a police sobriety. Check is a good term. And all these cops are all over and. Yes. Three in the morning. He I wanna go home. I called someone over. I said look I said, I'm John sterling and I'm just back from a road trip. And no one's that anything to drink. And would you let us go? And all yeah. Oh, John Wiley, and then everyone came over all the cops came over and the head of the detail said to me, John you got to keep that streak going. Six years ago seven years ago with great. That's awesome. So how did you first start doing these homerun calls, and you know, the the way you do them. How did how did you come up with it? You know, it's just the start doing it. It's your way to stand out for sure and everyone loves it. But like, how did it originate thing? I would tell you not everyone. Everyone who who smart loves it you on the year, you're going to get knocked. I don't happen to listen. I'm really good at that. I don't listen to people in. It's something that I would do with names or edge. It really just a play on words, and the I began this as far back as rock casting. The nets games in the mid late seventies in a Benard king was rookie and terrific. And he would go in for jam and ideal but arts sky, BB king, the players, call them BB after the guitar, you know, and. And I wish I I wish had a really good answer in Atlanta. I really started doing it. I did so much with Dominique it's unbelievable. You know, Dominique is money Feek, then I would change it among Necas terrific, Dominique is dominant. Anyway, I did that. And I did a thing with ran on. Randy whitman. You know, you hit a jump right? So he delivers a Wittman sample, blah, blah, Tayeb out Knox. Right. Someone actually came to me in Atlanta and said about Whitman's, so you know, it's spelled differently. Really care. It's upon anyway. So onto the Yankees and the first one I did it for was burn baby baron. Which was a rallying cry in the black power days of the late sixties by rap Brown. And you know, someone me, you know, what that means burned as it. Yes. I'm old enough. But in this case, it just means burn baby burn and Bernie goes, boom. And you know, you started hearing him come back, and it never was intended to be do, you know, that guy stopped me in the parking lot last night after the game imagine this. And he said to me, you didn't have a home run. Call for is Ahah Gilliam. You are in to look for people in the car. And I said, you know, why didn't have a home run call form why still hit it? I had never heard of. Do you think it might have just been is as gilliam's family? Weird. So it never was intended to be for everyone. And now it is. And I guess I should be happy about is like a kind of a cottage industry. All right. You know, it's it's just a nice imagine. When people knock it. People in newspapers. Silly can be it's just a play on words. It's all the world in people who hate anything. All right L is meant to be fun. And we we are there to entertain, you know, it's not ball one strike to want it anyway, so on and on and on so in Kyle holder hit a home run last night. I reached back to Lyle over bay said Kyle isn't a mild, you know. It's just fun. Yeah. Absolutely. Love it. What is the process like for coming up with one when the keys get a new player you immediately thinking? All right. What's my call gonna be gestion not in the old days? Just came to me, most of them Rami canot, don't, you know, just just happen A-Bomb from rod just happened. Excuse me. And you know, now I try to think so in a regular season game. I have one for two the whisky you wanna give it away. No respect. Oh, I think the most interest was on Stanton. Yes. Yep. I'll tell you that story. Okay. So they get Stanton. And everyone is asking me all winter, which hormone will. I can't you know until but what I did was I called up berlitz. I spoke to a wonderful gal there a town in master a gal named Linda Merlo, and I said. I said I want and short Italian phrase that rhymes, and I said, I if if you're old enough, and I guess she was. I said it's I want something like runs Oni Sono bony. Their logo for years, and you know, what a few days later, she came back. And she gave me Giancarlo Knowles, equal sto Ballo. And and when I started doing it people didn't like it. Then it grew on people. So you know, as what is the favorite you've ever. I always say I like, oh, the Grandi man can help. That's good enough impression Grandy he likes Matsui. Do you have on your most proud of? It's like, yeah. I really did a good job coming up loves that. Who loves that? Job in ignored WFAN loves through by God's. Anyway, it's not going to change the world and feed the, hungry and cure cancer. It's something, you know, kind of funny on the games Fisher. Do you think you're more known for your home run calls or your sign off with the Yankees win? A really is amazing. How that happened? You know, I'm I love the business. I told Michael Cayenne is center stage at at a very early age. I fell in love with sports and music, and I've had them as companions my whole life. Driving around if seriously Sinatra I hear all my music by different people all the time. Wow. What a joy makes driving. Great and driving New York is not great not at all. So with that in mind. What was your question? What more known for that your home run calls or your sign? Oh, I was going to say, I I've read every book and Bob Hope in his books would talk about how on his radio show in the late thirties early forties. They would throw lines away and they would hear him during the week. So they knew they had something. He's the line would be nothing. We would just throw line and on the program and people would. So when I started to hear Yankees win comeback and the home run calls. Well, then you know, you have something. So I don't know what I'm more famous for. But I think they both have done very way. Nothing. People imitate them. In the late fifties. Those a show which polarized the community Amos, and Andy and in the old days radio. It was done by couple of white guys. But now they had a black cast. And I tell you every single person in the business try to imitate, Tim more. And they couldn't do it. Of course is only one Tim more. And that's how powerful that was they'll try to do. I won't do it. Sound good? But Tim Moore was phenomenal everyone show business right to do it. Everyone all the time imitation for fun. It's for all the time and and Sammy Davis. And so I feel frankly. Very gratified that you hear the Yankee win thing or it is high as far, you know. Yeah. So you have a obviously golden set a pipe. A great voice was it like that your entire life at what age did you realize? All right. I got a voice for radio. Good question. Thank you. When I was a little boy. And I would hear all the time at parties. Now, a little boy running around, and I would hear all the time when he going to grow up to your voice. So I guess ad deep voice, then and I had a buddy and. And we were at his apartment. And we were listening to Nick game and they interviewed a player, Connie Simmons. You'd never heard of and kind of a high voice like this. And so I said to this guy's mom. I said listen to his voice him firstly sounds like a girl, and she said to me. Oh, he doesn't have a big deep sexy voice. Like you. Oh, so in your she was interested. So when your eleven or twelve thirteen blasts, a big thing I knew before then I was going on the air. Now is very lucky. I was given this voice. I didn't do anything for it. And and the the best thing I can tell you is doing all these games. Now, this thirty ninth year, I've been lost my voice sell press one day shower like this and to get off the air right now. You know, is there anything you do to prevent that from. Yes, I had a used it badly. I was doing. A hydrogen twenty nets in islander games and a three hour talk show and Morgan state football on Saturday slot award. Oh my goodness. That was just up getting from one place to the and getting back at at eight o'clock seven thirty the island or game. And. I use my voice improperly. And I raised a Najah a sound terrible. And awful. And I finally after trying everything I went to a doctor. And I said the reason I haven't gone is. They tell me if you operate. I may lose vocal quality. And the guy said, no, no. Once at thousand cases, and I went in and I had to nudge -als one on each chord any took them off. And that was in nineteen eighty and they gave me a couple of ways to use my voice, which I'll give you on the air for free. Thank. And what you have to do is either press out your your diaphragm? If you press out your diaphragm, you talk from the front of your your mouth, your front of your voice, or if you over exaggerate your lips, you do the same thing. They don't touch your chords. So for example, I was at all boy got so scared when I got ahead a week where couldn't do anything didn't talk and I've determined. Hey, this your livelihood. Why? So I've never I never reached my cords when I'm on the air. I were usually a single earpiece, which is so loud. And I cut off the noise by putting my hand over my ear may look dumb. But I can I can talk from the fund of my voice instead of my cords and one night, for example. The radio stations. I worked for as now called Entercom. They out CBS, and they had a party. And the rock noise on both. Couldn't hear yourself think. And you'd be involved in talking to all these people people wanna meet you, which is the idea of being there. And and I I would talk like this. If I talk like this now, you're not seeing it. I have my hand over my ear, and what happens is you can hear yourself. So you don't reach back and use your cords. And that was this winter, and I did that January February. And so that's what I do. I try never to use my cords. I try to speak from the front. Interesting. What was your relationship with George Steinbrenner favorite story in great story? This was on Michael's centerstage too. I I have told the story. It's amazing story. First of all, my relationship was great. I love George, and if you say, well, you know, he was very McCurry liver. Yeah. I like that though. Yeah. I liked that. Sure. He was getting killed. The Yankees were terrible when I joined eighty nine eighty nine ninety ninety one terrible team and. And it changed. George got suspended, the Howie spirit thing, and Jean Michel and Buck Showalter took over and that was the start of the Yankees. Well anyway in the interim. And eighty nine ninety ninety one they're all blended in. George was getting killed in the newspapers. And I said on the air, which he must have heard one on my soapbox. And I said keep killing Georgia and the GM about killing the players. They're the ones who are making out. They're the ones who are not pitching, right? And I went on my soapbox. So few nights later, we're in Milwaukee. And it's raining, and we send it back ABC than had the games, and they had a talk format. So they had someone ready to go on. And I'm wandering around the old Milwaukee ballpark grungy grungy old ballpark and Georgia sitting in one of the what would be sweeping. So they weren't they were. Steel girders. And he sitting there and I walked by the room, and he stops me. John. And he said, I I just wanna tell you. You'll always be the Yankee announce. And if they try to replace you, I'll veto it. And so that's pretty wonderful news from George so that was my he must have heard what I did, you know, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, Sherri. Sherri, liked hearing that everyone likes being defended. Not another person, obviously, close at Susan Waldman has been your broadcast partner since two thousand five Hugh describe what it's like working with her. And you know, what she's like as well. Here's a story. I was in Atlanta. And I helped get the general manager. WFAN which began ten fifty and then. NBC sold out. They bought much better signal and many way the GM guy named John Channon, and he had been my general manager for this talk format, which bombed nine months enterprise. It was like an offshoot of ESPN, and I helped get John the job. They called me the this group MS that that owned F A N, and I was with the hawks in Milwaukee for some game, and they call ban. I I raised over John. I got the job. And then he called me and said Pete Franklin is out with a heart attack our afternoon guy. And he said during the all star break when you come up would you would you do three or four days. And I said all I love it. Well, my update gal was Susan Waldman. So we became buddies wave of. For I ever could have dreamt that I get the Yankee job. And then I'd meet her. She was doing pre imposed on the Knicks. And and I was doing the hawks. So you know, we met a few times we were friends by the time. I got to the AKIs, and I I was on there with Michael that was a great relationship pretend years. And anyway, then there was an opening, and I, you know, did my best to get Susan the job. And then it was thought to be oh revolutionary, but it's not we work seamlessly together. We have very good chemistry report. We actually like each other were friends off the air. So is easy. You guys ever picker after spending yell so much time together like a dog day in August or you all get get an hour with two other. It's always good fact when we have a night off somewhere, we will go to dinner, you know, we'll invite Jack and Meredith, and we all have dinner out. Nice switching gears a little bit Alex Rodriguez. You know had to very roller coaster playing career especially in terms of the fans. And now he's really done the one eighty as his broadcasting career. What's your take on that? I mean, he's diversely loved now. I think you're amazing to know that it actually happened. We can't believe it Alex is gone from a pariah. Remember, he was suing the Yankees, and he was doing baseball at cetera et cetera. And now he's like everyone's buddy. And he's does anything he wants on the air. And he's now doing these planets commercials, and he's been accepted in that amazing is unbelievable. He could change the direction of his life so easily. So now he's going out with a major star. And he's got a great job. And I would imagine he as pretty good money in the Bank. Okay. Now as far as he is concerned, I've always been friends with the my boys'll. Liked him. I've always defended him, and you know, there are so many ills in the world so many things I really care about. And one thing I don't care about his ballplayers, taking whatever they take you see guys still being spendy dis for taking something, you know, my could careless. Okay. I do care about. Children getting killed in all these schools and mcdonnell's all us to that. I care about I care about ballplayers taking drugs fall tight when I mean, the steroid when Sosa McGwire bonds, you know, all those people were juicing. I mean, obviously, it does some bad stuff to your body. But I mean in terms of popularity sport never bigger back, then, you know, us absolutely true. And it's now grown to build a Lee baseball loan first of all it's different than the other sports trek. And so the difference. I mean, people are still now in eleven billion dollar business. Keep your hands of play the game has great. It'll always be great. And what what do you think the current state of baseball are you afraid at all of strike in a couple years? All the rule changes the slow moving free agency that they would be that stupid both both sides, and if they ever strike, they really deserve. You know, how people say a pox? On both their houses. Is just a question of how much money you keep you know, the ballplayers bothered by only getting an offer of two million four million a year. They have no idea about reality. None at all. And they should be ZOA raised in homes that didn't have the kind of money ninety nine percent of them. And the owners the the more they make the more they won. So I hope they resolve their problems for sure I know one thing with the last strike, we had Michael was my partner, and he wants said we did a jock show and he wants that. Said we're not getting paid. We didn't have a vote. And he's right. Yeah. So I would hope that they're not that stupid that they would be able to resolve this just greed. That's all hopefully, so I have a few more fun rapid fire questions here. I want to know what is let's say it's a Wednesday night seven o'clock game in June in New York. What is an average day like in the life of John Starling? We have a game that now I've been working late. For more than fifty years. And I was I was a late night person. Anyway, when I was a little kid, and my parents were called me the night watchman. Up late. So. I do believe this that one reason that I haven't missed a game in all these years is I get my sleep now. Yeah. I was kidding. You guys earlier that couldn't sleep last night after the game. And as I will watch the television and went now then at five in the morning, boy, then I could sleep. But I mean, I gotta do things. So a typical day would be that. I would get up eleven. I would have slept. You know long. I'm a great ability to sleep late, and you know, I'd have brunch. And I have very lucky I live in a beautiful building and Edgewater phenomenal building. And they have a down. They've Apul inside pool. So go down swim laps back up, stairs, shave and shower. Go to the ballpark, not a bad life. So I hope also after games at nothing. People don't understand the game is over at eleven or ten thirty eleven before you get out of there. And they have to drive home. We gotta get out of the stadium. Traffic you go home on I'll go to sleep. You know? Then what something and have an adult beverage in. And when I get tired, you know, it's one in the morning, so one thirty I fall asleep, and and repeat the procedure. I'm never good in the morning. Terrible morning person. Honest think you're more active person than me. Everything it's a very impressive. Three your time doing this who you think is your favorite player you've interacted with on the team. And it's a tough question. If you if it's tough the current team, but well, there's so many. But if I had say one person to be David Cone. Okay. We you know, we kidding. We call each other kindred spirits, and he's a really good guy. Very bright. And now I'm by blocked him from the start. There have been others one player who came over from the Braves to the Yankees, and I became friends with and he came to be one night after spring training. It said my family can't at over you build. Now feel to name Dion. James remember yet way back now before I get along every game that mo- pitched I Brooke has every game Geeta played. But I wasn't. Although I got along with both them great. I was like buddies with them. Like, I am let's say with with Kony what about the currency who's a guy who sticks out to you just have great relationship with well judge. You know, he's a good guy. And. His I met his parents. And his father who has hands about double by size. And and he shook my hand he said, I loved judge. So that got me right away. You know? So I like him very very much like CC very much, terrific teammate and leader. Speaking of of leaders, do you think there could be a next if there's anyone on this team? Do you think judge would be the next captain do you like his chances to be the next captain? Who should be that? There will be another one will be oh, sure. There's a lot of debate whether or not they'll just just retir- jeeter. I don't think so. I don't think so. You know, they didn't do it after Garrick and they didn't do after Munson. So, you know, time goes on their new heroes, and it should be that way. No new records new heroes new. I guess judge could be a captain back kind of thing. What kind of pet peeves? Do you have you seem like a guy who has some pet peeves? Do you have any? Operating day. The I if I have a pet peeve. I'm very giving. You all my secrets. I guess it's my defense mechanism. I ag-. No, it don't like something. I I have never listened to rap for five consecutive seconds to music. Okay. Other people can listen to it. Other people can make billions out of it. I don't mind not a young guy. But. You know? I don't listen to it. So anyway, I don't pet peeves say, well, New York, traffic, or whatever. Yeah. Double parking is killing New York. You know, an I drive in New York a lot. And do you do it? It's his top. I have to pick my my spots at try not to go below sixty fishery. That's one thing. I but anyway, as I I wish I could name a pet peeve. But what I do is. I ag- Nord. And go on my way, Tom anything else for John here. Yeah. I just have one more thing. So I get some play by play broadcasting and one of the toughest things for me. Is that I go to the bathroom a lot in between ever inning. I'd be. I'd be taken a leak or something. Are you able to told it in throughout the entire game? How how hard is that to do pretty good about that too? Yeah. I don't know why. But I at the worst can get into the seventh. The middle of the seventh inning all hell breaks loose at Yankee Stadium. They honor someone they sing something then they sing something else. And and that's why. Go to the bathroom, and you meet everybody there. And but I know I'm very very good about that one time. Urinal to urinal with Joe buck, really good guy. Great broadcast, really guy, actually. And so I can leave standing there were standing there. And they said there's always a pleasure standing urinal. You're an old witch Joe buck, and he said in the corny announcer's voice back to you. John. That's great. Yeah. Pay about things that I don't like Nigel my best to ignore them. That's a that's a good way to all. Right. That's pretty much all the questions. We have we thank you so much for coming on. And giving us part of your part of your day. I will say is there any way you can leave us with a little this is John sterling and you've been listening to the short porch. Can you live Li listeners with that short porch? Barstool sports. Okay. Short boards by bar. I wanna tell you guys something. Relatively intelligent, not very but relatively and if you people didn't know what you're talking about. I would have been not bothered by. But I think what am I doing here? I'm giving up my time. And you guys are great. You knew you know, everything you're really good. I bet your pride cast is great. Hope you make a living out of it. Are you making trying? Yeah. Yes. Anyway, guys are really good. So it was my pleasure to be on. And you've been listening to barstool sports. What what am I? Hi. This is John surly. And you're listening to the short porch by barstool sports. Okay. Oh, this is John sterling you've been listening to short porch byproduct of barstool sports. Perfect. Thank you so much. That was fantastic. I am replay that comment the minute long compliment day, my head for the rest of my life. You're probably gonna hear his whole. This is John sterling you listening to the short porch. Barstool sports. You're probably hear that every single podcast at the end. Because why not why wouldn't we do that? But yeah, that was that was fucking awesome. I remember finishing that fishing interview in Tampa. We as tell and the moment he like went upstairs picture, I did like a fucking whole fist destruct at the side in the World Series. I was so excited. It was Annette that complement was all of it. Because after we finished recording. He I think he continued. And I mean the craziest part with us again guys over at the stadium. Let me out give me a call. What that means does that mean, I don't know if he knows we can't just walk up to the press box and say, hi, I got enough. He knows tickets. Just don't go into the press box. You just gonna get us pass. I don't know. But it was I we have a new friend in Mr. Dunstall. I got a friend that I never knew I would have ever ever. Guy. What an every what a guy what a human being? He's everything you everything you would think he isn't more and the voice in person. I mean hearing the podcast is is great in itself. But here in that in person with two feet away from you is insane. What else love him magical, Larry pipes? Let's get a few dams here. I did get a DM for Matt Rinaldi? He's a short porch listener, slowly, he he Demis warnings that hubs and fighting the hostile life due to right now did a high blood pressure trying to figure out the cause whatever he said love, the Yankees tweets and the podcast helps a lot can't wait to the on. So we're mission. Wishing you a speeder covering, Matt. And hopefully, you're back to full speeds version. Yeah. Awesome. That people are listening. This could actually make their day. That's pretty cool moving on to another damn sister. Brandon la- Mando by the way for now on these are all from Instagram so follow short porch. The underscore short underscored porch on Instagram and the real really, really. But that's what we gotta do. But someone had the short for channel. Why? And they've never like Instagram before insane. Brandon says I know you guys are big on bedding. So why what are the odds? The man the myth legend the definitely not legend ellsbury plays in a regular season game before Hicks the season. I'm zero yet Hick's because. Yeah. It's zero considering the hope we were where Hoke Lewis he's not close to being an option replace x. You could put a point. Oh, one case up really bad happens to. But I don't think that's really option. We're talking Hicks minus five thousand to play over elsewhere. Yeah. Even that might be you might be off the board and could be off aboard. It could be off the board. I saw someone today. Bet on the warriors to make the playoffs. They put sixty seven thousand dollars to six hundred seventy dollars on the bet. I mean, it's a quick six hundred seventy bucks why not hassle? That's that's betting sixty you can true. I mean, you could probably put sixty seven grand in the Bank in make that off interest. If you're comfortable enough, if you're rich enough to bet sixty seven thousand dollars on a single bet then six hundred seventy dollars doesn't mean anything nothing. I don't even think about it. If you have sixty seven grand bet, and he made other Bex to for like fifty thousand dollars. Jeez. Man, next from Joey be this is an interesting one, you're out of popular bar in New York City at our highly intoxicated. You're having a great time in a bunch of your buddies point over to the other side, and who is there, but Greg bird with a group of people assuming you run into him that night. What is the first thing you would say to him? Remember your shimmy drunk while I'm going to do the thing. Ryan Boyd him at all costs. And if I leave the bar mental lead the bar was I don't think I can have a friendly conversation with him, especially being extremely drunk. I mean. Yeah, you hate your more known for hating him than I am. So I think it'd be more awkward for you. May I probably I go like Greg big fan. What's up, man? Like all the haters out there like barstool hubs on Twitter, so many haters out there. They're the worst. I got your back. Like, you're gonna fight through these injuries. I love that. Sweet lefty swing state and we need in the lineup. Go get a man, and I'd probably grab a picture. Moving on next next question from t y dinks for the short porch. You'd compare is a really good question. Like this. If you were to compare the twenty nine team to the two thousand nine team safest, a judge compares to jeeter for that team who is this team to Decky Matsui, a cold blooded killer. The Boston killer the ultimate World Series of. That is a good question. I'm thinking clutch guy. You're gonna up to have big hits consistent steady consistent. I might say. Graber in my head. He did have a bad plough. It will take it would be if he was healthy. I think the easy answer if he's healthy. I bought from Taylor though. Void is a Boston killer him. Yeah. I think I think Labor's gonna have it really Salty's glaciers kind of flown under the radar. Yeah. Definitely it's weird. Because he was I mean, you know of best prospects in baseball last season had a really good season. Got a little bit overshadowed by Andrew Harr Shohei Otani, but sill an awesome season for rookie. It's two twenty two years old. I think, you know, hidden tour towards the bottom of the order. He's going to have a really really nice season. So I'll say they come up with some big kits in a sort of like Matsui's not gonna be relied upon to hit third or fourth. I think provide some some big hits from the bottom of the lineup. My biggest concern with him is how they fuck with him with tools. Oh, and Loma Hugh and playing time wise, I you're he gets a lot of singing you've expressed that before out of your concern about that cider. I don't know how to do that. But I don't think there's no way he's only playing two out of every three days. So I think they said they met it out. I think he said he's only going to get day off. He's going to one game off a week was still sounds too much because Kleber towards these. So young. But I don't know. I guess we'll see goes. I think the guy I'm not gonna like put on eggs basket right now. But I think the Mayhew could turn into that type of high contact rate hits the high average guy he's been pretty clutch thinking time in Colorado. I think key could kinda turn into a sneaky like clutch silent killer type guy, especially silent. He silent killer in LeMay, you ago had exactly the same. So he could turn into that. But a guy who's been on the team. Yeah. I go voided glacier. Probably that spot. Yeah. Then that that is our show. We're gonna be back an our we're twice a week. So we'll be back here on Thursday. You will hear we're doing out of China right at amount of Thursday. That's an awesome interview. Great, dude. He's had a killer spring his stuff is ridiculous. So which we sat down with him poolside for about twenty five minutes. And hopefully, we have some more. We have some optimistic news about on Thursday show instead of Severino Hicks Delon Nells, very we'll probably have ellsbury up. They would be nice. But that thanks for listening. If this first time listening hope you enjoyed I think he did sterling fucking awesome. And there's more of this to come of the show is on the up and up. I promise you that. So Tommy got anything else. Twenty seven rings baby.
