"Bedding to seventy pitches of ninety five. Plus three ninety three slugging that seems fair and the rockies to sixty four ninety slugging that should come down but chorus field definitely playing a role there with that. So give you a lot of numbers here on today's show just to sort of wrap up that part of the segment high-velocity contact is not as beneficial as it has been in the past so pitchers that allow a lot of it are having more success than i would have expected them to coming into the season. Not nearly as for guys. That don't have good command. Which i think is a big reason why we've seen a lot of underdogs winning games here early on in the season. I don't think that this changes. I think it could lead to a lot of parody. Maybe some teams do make better adjustments than others. Maybe more pitchers do start. Pitching to contact as i speculated on monday where walks or a problem. High-velocity contact is not as much of a problem. So guys may start pitching the contact a little bit more if they've got the higher walk rates if they have that capability to do that. They don't nibble as much something like that. But here's another. Follow point to everything. And i'm talking about here. Maybe we need to focus more on defense because fielders are going to get more opportunities on balls that they can actually handle the increase drag on. The baseball is slowing down in route to the fielders which is a big reason. Why batting average is so low to go along with shifts and just the fact that baseball is debtor. in general. Maybe we need to focus more on defense so the sabermetrics set of the show here today is defensive runs saved and you could find this overrun fan graphs. When you go to the team splits pages for batting and pitching you can click on the fielding box arrows. show you all of the team's stats from a fielding standpoint now defensive runs saved is calculated by a an analytics company excuse me called the fielding bible. They pull their data from baseball info. Solutions now this is a plus one minus one kind of system relative to how often plays that fall into these fielding. Buckets are made based on actual results. So essentially what they do is they take bannon ball type hit speed and direction and they put it all into their big hopper. They track these things by hand and they basically look at how often plays that are similar are made so for example. If a fielder makes a play that gets made twenty five percent of the time. That's worth point. Seven five defensive runs saved now on the flip side of their players. Made twenty five percent of the time and the fielder doesn't make it. Well that's minus point. Two five defensive runs saved and this is an integer system so it is plus one minus one is rounded up or rounded down. But essentially you earn defensive runs saved for plays. That are made and you lose defensive. Run safe for plays that are not made if a play has made a hundred percent of the time. Let's say it's a pop-up third lose it. In a sun. The wind takes it. Whatever else if it's play it's made one hundred percent of the time and you don't make that play that's minus one defensive runs saved if it's a play that's made sixty percent of the time and you don't make that play that's minus point six runs so again it's a pretty simplified system. In a lot of ways it's not as detailed an analytically driven. Some of the other stuff. That i talk about but it is something that can be very useful can be very beneficial as you're taking a look at the games here so i don't think the washington nationals are a very good team. I don't like their pitching staff. And i don't like their lineup. However the nationals number one in defensive runs saved this season at plus twenty four the padres number two plus fifteen white sox number three plus. Fourteen brewers number four plus thirteen cardinals plus eleven than the diamondbacks are plus ten. I included them. Because i'm including all of the teams that are at least plus ten defensive. Run sabe so that matters in a depressed offense environment here where you can't rely on a whole lot of run support you've gotta make plays defensively and so far those six teams nationals padres. White sox brewers cardinals and diamondbacks have been pretty good teams to this point in time on the other side of the coin. The worst teams. The oakland a.'s. Are already minus. Twenty defensive runs saved. They have been awful defensively now. They've been able to overcome it. But i do think that makes them a negative progression candidate to some degree as we go forward here probably especially on the road where the ball may carry a little bit better than it. Does there oakland coliseum. The angels the second worst minus eighteen defensive runs saved the phillies minus twelve. The comes minus nine in the tigers minus six. The tigers don't really do anything well but the affiliate once again. Another bad defensive season for them has absolutely had an impact on where their record sits to this point in time also their offense has been an underachiever so far so maybe we need to look more at these defensive metrics because again you've got a scenario here we've got a lower run environment you've got less power you've got less carry to the baseball you've gotta make place you've got to convert batted balls into outs some teams and some teams. Don't another metric. You could possibly use to try to quantify defense and use it in your handicapping is that fan. Graphs has the all encompassing d e f metric the metric d e. F like most. Definitely can't hear this includes runs above average and the positional adjustment. Now i'm not going to go into detail with this but it makes sense that some defensive positions are more important than others. Traditionally shortstop has been more important than second base. You know traditionally centerfield has been more important than left or right field stuff like that. So this encompasses feeling runs above average and then adjusts based on position to wait more important positions like shortstop base short stopover over third base stuff like that so that's why this positional adjustment is important and something that fan graphs has incorporated so the top five in the death leadership. Board the brewers. They are plus nine point. Nine defensive runs oreos plus nine point seven white sox plus nine point six twins plus seven point five in the rockies plus seven on the back side. The tigers are minus sixteen defensive runs according to that state fan graphs metric. That's not good at all. Angels minus ten point one blue jays minus nine dodgers minus eight point. Eight interesting team there. And the padres minus six point three so the padres are plus fifteen defensive runs saved but minus six point three and in the bottom five in this all encompassing defensive metric and a big reason why is because fernando tatis junior has been their worst defensive player and according to this system from fan graphs shortstop probably the most important position there so the system does need a little bit of an overhaul. I think travis sawchuk did some great work on this for the score. Taking a look at how shortstop has fewer chances for fielding than ever before. But.

sixty percent one hundred percent monday three today six teams travis sawchuk eleven twenty five percent ninety five Twenty defensive runs seven point seventy pitches ten point Angels third fernando tatis eight point seven washington nationals

The family separation crisis at the US border

"Now let's go to the us for several weeks now there's been a zero tolerance policy against people crossing the southern border illegally now this is led to families being separated with children being sent to their own what's called tender age shelters while the adults go into detention after cross party outrage at audio and video which showed the distress caused to the children and after initially defending the policy stoutly president trump has you turned in the interpretation of many observers he signed an executive order to keep families together in detention that's still going to be detained he was talking both about his own compassion as a motivator for the decision but also his determination to carry on protecting the country's borders we have to have strong borders totally strong we can't put up with the nonsense at the same time we're doing it with compassion and i signed an executive order keeping families together because i think that's probably a very important thing to be doing and i also think that it's the right thing to do but we have it let up we're very very powerful at the border we're going to need the wall has to be built we gotta stop the drugs from pouring in we have to stop people from coming in if they're not authorized to come in if they don't go through the process well the new decision couldn't come amendment to send for some officials such as new york city mayor bill de blasio he told a news conference in harlem how hundreds of children have been affected in his state in the last two months his family separation policy has affected thousands of children of two hundred and thirty nine of them are right here right now and this is just one of the centers in new york city the folks here told us that since the program began over three hundred fifty children have been here all because of the family separation policy of the trump administration these children are across a whole range of ages the youngest to come here they told us was nine months old so we're talking about children some cases literally we can't even communicate have no idea what's happening to them no ability to be in touch with their families and there were seventy pitches across social media this morning hundreds of protesters gathering guardia airport on the east coast of america in new york state over nights because they got word of the fact that these children were arriving in america is the end of a journey there begins in central america for many over that southern border is mexico which itself provided more than half of all unauthorized immigrants living in the us in two thousand fourteen so what is the reaction from mexico i've been catching up with our colleague khalil who is in the united states southern neighbor i am in culiacan and it's the capture of cinema st clair this is the home of these cylinder walk cartel drug cartel headed by l chapel or joaquin guzman this is one of the most powerful cartels in the region and basically this city is the epitome of what life could be like under organized crime violence and poverty they've been the settings of so many stories here so it's not surprising to hear that a large number of those crossing the border into the united states are from mexico despite of course the harsh measures by the trump administration many here have been watching with shock and outrage the images of young children being separated from their families and now despite the decision being reversed by president trump people are still angry on one hand of course they want their government to stand up to the united states and defend those people but also they're still calling the trump administration's measures as inhumane listen to fifteen year old natalia candlemas she gave me hurry action to what's been happening the fact that people children i've been taking the poor from the families and we don't know what's going to happen to their we don't know if they're ever going to see their parents again and it breaks my heart see and this is something that i was told by the president of the united states legally they're doing that not because they have accused of.

"Talk about panic for a second but sure sounded like when we talked to bruce bocce yesterday he wanted bumgarner to pitch this bride agent first at and t park you know with the way he looked in sacramento eight strikeouts three and two thirds innings he said he can get up to seventy pitches in his next start and the giants really haven't had many starters get much past seventy pitches over the last few games and so when you think about all the factors and the instant jolt that bumgarner can provide the club i think it all adds up to him started on friday and of course they'll still consider the rehab assignment in san jose on thursday but right now i just really think that they need him in this rotation carry bumgarner is put in the rotation who goes out of the rotation well you know it could depend on how andrew suarez pitchers today because tie block haven't given them more than four and a third innings in any of his past four starts so i think you know it's probably gonna come down the block or suarez and the giants will substitute bumgarner in for one of the lefties and you know after blocks three inning outing last night against the cubs where really struggled didn't have his command and that was pretty characteristic for him to be walking so many guys but suarez still has a lot to prove himself so maybe give bumgarner the chance to come back on friday and if suarez doesn't pitch well maybe you know blocked goes to the bullpen suarez goes back to saffir sacramento derek rodriguez gets a chance to start a lot of moving parts but let's face it the giants starters with a four seventy six earned run average how about that is just say that to yourself four point seven six as an era for the starting staff that's twenty third in the majors one point four zero whip they're putting a a lot of people on base and the league slugs for twenty three against them so they've got to straighten it out and i've said it all weekend long and we saw it highlighted yesterday with the thai block game but panic this is quick for him they've he goes out on the rehab today to.

"Twenty one pitch a twenty one pitch at bat he fouled off twentyone pitches uhhuh impressive is nothing anticlimactic because i think he grounded out right out now having three hits and the and the giants win and great defensive baseball to have a guy out there wearing out a pitcher with twentyone pitches that's that's great you can do that and who cares if you get out you just got twenty one pitches from the guy but i thought that was interesting that's amazing knock the pitcher at a pitcher through i believe seventy pitches and like three innings or something you know you know that means a one better so that's a pretty amazing a accomplishment there for brandon belt and for the giants they come in and get a big win against the angel team that happened playing well before the red sox came to town and smoke them and now the giants got him a couple of times to shohei ohtani by the way they get a hit we have to get our otani update i didn't get get himself a hitting the lineup tonight we'll be pitching on the mound for the angels on tuesday angels cooling down a bit and then finally thursday night the nfl the national league of tackle football annual draft you guys on radio you're going to have i think you're gonna have jay glazer on the radio side last year he'd he nailed in thirty two tweets he nailed all thirty two draft picks in a row now mayes eyeballs on him who is your number one pick my number one overall pick would be sam darnold out of usc going through the cleveland browns he's the best quarterback prospect in the draft he can literal do anything you like the quarterback position and the only reason i'd have them over ozone is that he's more mobile and if you're applying for the cleveland browns.

"In the outfield hobby buys went one for five s and russell one for three he did have two walks and then with the ones with a one for havi is the only one that matters and then jose cantata two and one third innings pitched seven hits seven earned runs one strikeout he now has an er a of eight point one six on the season he only through seventy pitches jose cantata knocked out early and that was the reason the cubs were behind and that's backed back starts from darvish and jose can tana not quality starts and giving up a bunch of runs to a braves offense that's clicked early on but this isn't one of the better teams in baseball this is a bottom feeder trying to rebuild and you're giving up runs like this the next couple of weeks you got teams like the cardinals the rockies the indians the brewers all on deck and pitching staff does not have going right now they don't and i i don't wanna make excuses for jose container but it sucked out there yesterday did everyone yeah and they gave up fourteen run listen bullpens collapsing in a weird wild game is a little different than your started getting knocked out in the second well the bright side for the cubs is their bullpen only gave up two earned runs eddie butler went three and two thirds of an inning two runs and then steve see she came in justin wilson and then brandon morrow came in obviously they didn't give up any runs but you look bad out there like yeah he's got an eight point one six yard he gave up seven earned runs in two innings that gets it's bad right now for yesterday i don't think that bad right i don't think i use bad yesterday i don't think they cantatas melting down every day i don't think was if it was sixty and sunny he'd be melting down internet that's that's not the point of the comment the comment is watching this pitching staff now gang off to a slow start again for the second straight year that's something to keep a tab on.

"With twenty thirty years experience and and clearly a lot of success but you know as a casual fan who understands the game of baseball pretty well i am i'm a bit suspicious of dave roberts use of the bullpen and we really kind of blow up and are faced with moral yesterday because he he clearly didn't have the same pop on on his delivery and it resulted in four quick runs you know let let let me say this in game two we saw dave roberts pole richhill at at seventy pitches he had given up one laura because they went to analytics they being the dodgers air said that third time around the batting order season three times and by the way rituals numbers don't change dramatically third time morale they just did it out of analytics that all pitchers don't pictures well or not as effective with the with the battered seeing threetime so they pulled him out of the game because live that everything on the bullpen changes and it also changes for the rest of the series overworking grand moro all were working for short camps and we constantly eighthinning have to get six out and he ends up blow in that game anyway it also has a a kind of residual effect for the rest of the series these guys are gas guys these guys are higher at by the way both teams are what the dodger bullpen which was string th they're like a weakness now because these guys are over worked and i don't know what it's gonna take but i you can't go back tomorrow and you can't go back can't lewis you absolutely have to have they're gonna have ask ritual to give them seven or six and a half or seven solid innings tomorrow and if they don't get it i think they are going to have a big achilles heel not bullpen again also i i'm really not versus get a baseball fan but i've noticed offensively the dodgers have sort of their they've the game has changed for them in some way they'd be hitler at this great confidence in terms of route 3 they look like unpire is away they rigged the pitches they like knew exactly what they wanted where it was going to worry patient woohoo all of a sudden they move impatient they were throwing it everthing quota that part.
