"Is time for a drive to the close with Charles lemaitre's founder and CIO of value works here with us in person at the Bloomberg interactive broker studio. Charles, great to see you. Really nice to be here. Thank you for having me. So how would you describe today's price action? This doesn't look like a rally so much as a pause in the recent selling. Yeah, I would say it's a little bit of a respite and maybe a preamble to what we can expect towards the end of the year. Now, at this time of year, we tend to hope for Santa Claus rallies and yearend rallies. And those rallies happen for reasons. This one might be just setting up right now. And so I hear value works. I think value stocks. Should I associate you with value stocks? Is that not necessarily your deal? Well, you know, I named the place value work, so I do believe I'm a value investor, but we find value in a lot of different places. And one thing that I've always shied away from is believing value is the bottom half of the valuation continuum. It's when you care about price and you're getting a good business at a good price at a discount to what it's worth today. That's value. And there are a lot of classic growth stocks today that are trading at value prices. Name some names. Longest favorite for us is Qualcomm and other one that we love right now is Netflix. Those are two obviously classically growth stocks. Both of them are trading at very, very realistic value prices. Qualcomm is a single digit earnings multiple. That is so interesting. You know, Netflix is one of the dark horses recently. It's had a huge rally over the past couple of months. After being one of the worst performers in the first half of the year. So even so, it's still nowhere close to where it was at the beginning of the year. What's a read on this new advertising tier of subscriptions that it's offering? Well, you know, I even take a step back from investors reaction to that advertising tier. And think about how much people judge the stock being expensive or cheap relative to yesterday's prices. All right, we just said, wow, it's had a great run over three months, but on the other hand, it's down massively from 600 to 200 back up to 300. The fact is down from 600 to 300 or up to 302 hundred doesn't tell you about the size of its business or its earnings and where the share price is relative to that. And so what I think is really interesting about Netflix is that even up from 200 to 300, the multiple on earnings the multiple on cash flow is really, really compelling. And then you take a step further and start talking about the subscriber business, model, their subscriber model, and how they extend that into paid advertising. And you see that they're really well positioned, not just for the next 6 months, but for the next three, 5 years. And so something that we saw a lot in 2020 was a conversation around short selling. Obviously leading to some pretty big short squeezes and became kind of a dirty word, but in this market, it seems like the consensus heading into next year is that there's more pain ahead, at least on a benchmark level. But when you look at some of the individual names that you've been keeping an eye on, do you see any shorting opportunities as well? I see a lot of shorting opportunities. And I see more and better shorting opportunities today than a year ago, because the problem with the year ago at this moment was that so much of the market was on fire, and there was so much enthusiasm in some names. And while they were overpriced, you knew they could keep going higher. At this moment, because the fed is draining liquidity, and because investors have been so battered, it's really hard to see how story stocks get story multiples over the next 6 months. And so when you find something that's overpriced and their business is challenged, it's really hard to see how the markets bail them out. And so I think there are a lot of great short names right now. But at the same time, they might meander for a while. It's not like it's going to be a straight line down. It's going to be a price discovery and searching for a bottom and everyone's going to be listening for what the fed says or what the fed might do. It'll take a while for that bet to pay off. I think that's exactly right. But the nice thing about having a decent amount of short exposure in your portfolio is presumably is to marry that with a decent amount of long exposure. So if you're shorting over priced names that have problematic business models and you're going long names that are really attractively priced that have good prospects, if you get a further leg down in the market, the shorts will presumably really crater and the lungs may give up 5 or ten or 15%. And at that point you have the advantage of not simply not having lost that much, but you then cover your shorts and you become effectively more long, so as you go into that market bottom, you get an explosive bounce. I love this conversation on shorting. Because again, I speak to a lot of people who don't long only investors and part of the scary things that I hear about shorting is that losses, theoretically, are infinite. So when you're shorting a name, I mean, how sure do you have to be? Well, there's a 100% truth to that. Almost. You know, the devil's in the details there. When you're shorting a company with a $500 million equity cap, like GameStop was at the low or even lower, and a $5 billion revenue base, it could easily see three X or 5 X or ten X upside. When you're shorting a company like trans dime, which has a 35 $40 billion equity cap and a $20 billion debt load so it's $60 billion to start. Yeah, I suppose it could double, but that's a $120 billion and it's larger than Boeing and it sells $6 billion worth of auto parts and Boeing owns half of the aerospace market in the world. When you're shorting a name like Texas Pacific land and it's a $20 billion equity cap and they own a $1 billion worth of real estate and maybe two or $3 billion worth of mineral rights, yeah, it could go up for sure, but from $20 billion how much higher is it going to go? $400 billion? It could happen, but that's really, really a stretch. How much of your portfolio then is short, how actively are you shorting stocks right now? We're shorting stocks more actively today than any time in my career. In part, because I think we've become better at shorting as I've become been doing it longer. And the opportunities right now seem more obvious. Well, 30 seconds, what are some of your biggest short positions right now? Broad Broadcom, trans dime, and Texas Pacific land. And that'll do. That'll do. So just three shorts. No, those are we also are short wisdom tree financial and investment CNS. I mean, that's yeah, that'll do. Yeah, that'll do. What fascinating conversation? How long do you hold those shorts for? A long time. We have no distinction between how long will be short something and how long will be long something. We've been long, short, Broadcom for 5 years. Wow. Yeah, and you know, there are plenty of shorts that have doubled on us. Well, we need to continue this conversation at some point. That is Charles lemonade. He is the founder and chief investment officer over at value works joining us in our studio. Great conversation

Chances to be the cy young award winner does the the yankee pinstripes of garrett cole that he dawn's a give him the advantage automatically and as a bonus question if robbie ray does when the cy young does that make you a little bit. More nervous at the blue jays aren't going to be able to afford them. Logistical big pollen. Baseball when you're talking about our quote unquote current budgets. So it figured if to help the other. Big market teams. We haven't spent a penny yet for next season. The engine review is is our money so to that point is go back to the question going into this season garrett cole was expected to be a cy. Young pitcher has pitcher. I won't but the other part that equations in my voting piece of this whole thing. And i'm one of those old school people with the mvp in the cy young award. What did you do for your team. The yankees were expected to be a playoff team. Hands down right so him being expected to win that and the yankees making the playoffs isn't anything overwhelmingly and shocking to me. He did what he was expected to do. Right the blue jays requiring a french team. If you wanna talk about the blue jays actually being playoff contender. It is because of robbie ray is so he is the mvp equivalent of a pitcher to me. So he's edging out and this isn't just because of blue jay affiliation because he had more to overcome and took his team on his back and ran with it. That is where. I'm seeing to the point where i would be seeing just enough votes for somebody like robbie ray edging out garrett cole in a very close race but to that point you're definitely more yankees fans on the people that can vote lose that just getting edged out would be my guest. But i think there's going to be a good battle for robbie ray as a cy young candidate for the season because to that point.

Michael wasn't quite as vertical in his first three championships right like he was vertical. Michael switch hands the second three peat for michael. His efficiency was so amazing. Not a wasted motion and i mean in that game. Seven against the mavs twenty eight points. Ten boards nine assists zero turnovers. That is literally a perfect. Nba game number one. Chris paul intelligence toughness leadership in the fourth. Quarter this postseason now. This is go time right. That's where stars are stars. The fourth quarter. He has nineteen assists and no turnovers. That is insane. That would be a quarterback at the end of the season having nineteen touchdowns no picks in the fourth quarter that is unheard of. The sons have won seven straight playoff games. They remain one of the league's unionist teams. So he's doing this with fairly new head coach a new system new players and he's averaging sixteen and nine on fifty one percent shooting in the playoffs after a shoulder injury so this guy has been injured in the playoffs and had to nurse himself back to one hundred percent health. Chris paul is my mvp kind of horrifying looking trophy but nonetheless durant by the way we know yokich is great but he just got swept. You know what it is about the mvp. Because i agree. It is a regular season award and it has the value right because we are constantly devaluing the nba regular season. So i think it is important to recognize people that do give their effort and performance during the regular season fans which yoga one hundred percent deserving of it. The problem is they change the narrative around the every single year. Which makes it difficult to track. Who is supposed to be the matters what matters and then because they change it every single year because it's sometimes becomes a narrative award we get to the postseason and you have the mvp against someone like chris. Paul and you can then start to separate what that middle word means which is value. Not that yokich wasn't valuable to this team. Of course he was but chris. Paul transformed that organization. They went fourteen right like that last game. Throw it out. I think the homes is playing. They would have beaten the chargers but you never know they could have slipped up but they lost it in my view last year. They lost two games. They were trying to win. That was that raiders game and the super bowl which is incredible. And this is. This is the season after they won the super bowl which historically teams do not make it back a little bit of a super bowl hangover. Right so i think we all agree that they didn't play great last year. They didn't play up to their standards. And every game they they drove us a little bit crazy but they always found a way to win from a mentality standpoint. How is this team differ going into the season because for me i feel like if there was a season where they would have a chance to go undefeated. It would be this season because from mentality standpoint. You got a lot of guys coming back. That are pissed off pissed off that they lost super bowl pissed off about the way that they lost the super bowl. "Policy with the A 30 report. I'm Sean Gallagher. Breaking now. Curfew actually expired officially at noon today, so there's no curfew. Ohioans have been waiting to hear that since November as Governor Mike DeWine announced today that the company in team related curfew was no longer in effect. But the wind said to continue following cover 19 safety guidelines to prevent a spike in hospitalization, But we don't know if we're what's gonna happen with the variance. Um, you've seen some of the national stories about how fast it replicates. We don't know so we could be back in a situation where have a climbing cases. We certainly hope we don't do that. But we all can control this. To some extent in one way we can control is to continue where mask continue to keep the distance. Whether it's in the workplace, whether some schools whether it's our own personal, personal lives. The curfew was listed as current hospitalizations in Ohio State below 2500 for seven straight days today, marking The 10th straight day. "To four CBS That's 4227. And, uh, you know, I think it today if you're a today if you're a a Lions fan, you can like the trade, but you're not gonna get any instant satisfaction or gratification, right? It's pretty simple. You're going to look at and say all cool. We get more draft picks, and you know we got Jared Goff. Hey, stinks. But at least down the road. Maybe we can be built properly, which is what they've been saying for. I don't know how many years in Detroit S so it's like you could look at a trade and be like all right, Yeah. Good trade, good trade. And if Lions fans think that we'll find out hope to hear from some today for the Rams. It's like, all right, like this is cool. We got Matt Stafford. Now we're going toe. Now We're going for the Super Bowl. Now We're going to try to win it right And it's cool until they don't win it because the Rams and less need their GM have continued to show no value in draft picks and their high draft picks, which is dangerous man normally in the NFL. The good teams of the teams that are built through their system through their drafts right on. What the Rams have done is they've done a really good job of free agent signings and developing some of the guys through their system for sure, and now they're not only trying to fill in holes Via free agency and trades. That's how they're trying to really build their team now when when they made the trade for Branden cooks a couple years ago. And give up a first round draft pick to the Patriots, and they sign him to a big money contract. And then they traded in pretty much the next year. Like all those things when you look at the team, and I don't wanna get too much in the weeds with With cap it's and stuff like that or dead money, But dead money essentially means that money that a team has on their salary structure that is with players that are with them anymore because of contracts, etcetera. So the Rams have so much dead money on their cat. Because of Jared Goff, me now being Traded because of Brandon Brooks being traded. Brennan cooks being traded with Todd Gurley Todd Gurley is still that never. They signed into a big contract. He was hurt right away. They got rid of them. You just can't sign players the contracts and then get rid of him. Not the way it works in the NFL without having huge penalties. So as much as the rands. I think that this this gives them a real shot to be competitive. The as they possibly could be. It doesn't mean that they're well run, and it doesn't mean that it's a good idea what they're doing right here. His odds are it's not gonna work. And then where are you? I'd rather have the Detroit part of it and again this year. That's not sexier Fun, but that's what I would do. If I was building a franchise of I own the team, I'd say, Listen Let's start bad, right? Let's get a quarterback in the draft. That means you're bad for a year to that's okay, let's build our team and let's go. That would that would be my feeling, and that's why I believe that that the Lions won this trade 855 to 1 to four CBS 855 to 1 to 4 to 27. Let's take some phone calls Your reaction. Adam in Wisconsin. Adam, Go ahead. You're on CBS Sports radio. Hey, Thanks, John. Good morning. Take Thanks for taking the call. I agree. 100% when I first heard this I was like, Are you kidding me? You got Uh, Matthew Stafford 33 years old. I've never won anything in college or the NFL. It has had two back surgeries, and he gets And in the Detroit get two first rounders and a third. Like you said before you're traded away all of your high, drastic and then I I love what you just said. That that they don't have a first round draft pick for seven years, seven straight years. Didn't give me 1/10 of his salary and I will do a better job building the Rams and heated. You know what it is. Once they started doing this stuff, Adam. It's like they're so pot committed and they're so screw that they just have to continue to do it and continue to do it. Right, like at this point. Well, they're gonna They're gonna be in big trouble if it doesn't work, right? Because then they're gonna actually need to say like, okay, Now we need that Now We need to do it if they would've Super Bowl doesn't matter. I mean, they didn't get to a Super Bowl a couple years ago with Jared Goff, but We don't normally see teams that are being built like this in the NFL. Absolutely. Thanks for the call. All right, Adam. Appreciate it. It is. It is not conventional what they're doing, But again, they trade the draft picks to get up and get your golf, okay? You think he's the guy? It doesn't matter what you trade the gulf and get him If you think he's the guy, and now you're trying to build around them. So you trade a first round for cooks again. You wanna draft these guys so they're making They're making $2,000,003 million a year not to where you have to trade for him. And then you have to give a new contract that doesn't work. Jalen Ramsey. They trade two first round draft picks to get Jalen Ramsey and then they got to make him the highest paid corner in the league. They traded to first right two plus two. Get Jalen Ramsey. Right. Like you need to draft those guys. That's how you build your team. You need to draft those guys. But at this point the fact that they've already been building their team like this. There's no time to draft these guys. So instead of trying to go after Ryan Fitzpatrick to compete with Jared Goff or trying to find a Cam Newton and he has he has a a better year. They just go out and they get the big the best guy they feel like they came for the money, and this is really two separate two separate trades. The first trade is Matt Stafford to the Rams for a first round draft pick, because that's what it was thought his value was was around the first round there and the Rams being a playoff team that's in the twenties, and that matters. That's it. That's a top 10 pick. That's a significant significantly better pick than what what he's worth. You get a top five pick that's like 2.5 times to pick off what the ranch pick is worth. So it's two separate traits Stafford to the rands. First round draft pick, and then the other trade is Jared Goff, a first rounder and a third rounder for nothing. For nothing. That's what it is. It's two separate trade Stafford to the Rams. That's a first rounder. That's clean Jared Golf and a first and a third rounder for nothing. That's how bad they wanted to get rid of him in a salary. It's amazing. So again Talk about knee jerk reactions. You spend so much in capital draft capital to get y'all got two first rounders through second rounders into third rounders just to trade up and get him. They give him a nice brand new $35 million a year plus contract. And then they decide like that. They're gonna trade him and they're out of love with him and to get rid of them. They have to have to trade a first and a third rounder just to get rid of him. I mean, man, what an expensive player Jared Goff was Unbelievable. Let's go to hike is calling from California like your old CBS sports radio. How are you? I'm fine. Excuse me. I'm fine. And thank you very much for taking Mike off. Listen I'm 65 years old. And I've come under the realization that Detroit will not go to the Super Bowl in my lifetime. So the hearing this news today I have hope. I think it's a good trade is no knock on that Stafford or the management or the ownership of Detroit,.
