What Makes a Rookie of the Year?

"I did some research looking into what really makes a rookie of the year and really three things really came stood out to me. One is opportunity right. You have to actually have minutes significant minutes in a significant role on your team. And if you look over the last couple of years for the rookie of the year race you're going to see that at twenty seven minutes a game seems to be the the threshold that we're looking at for players right now. Two thousand nineteen. It was twenty seven. Point eight doesn't eighteen was thirty minutes a game. And so the first thing that we're we're scouring is is this player going to get significant like starter minutes and a great role on their teams very difficult to crack rookie of the year. No matter how talented you are without those minutes the second key metric is really points per game so in two thousand eighteen. The top three scored. I think sixteen point three points per game two dozen nineteen top three vote-getters for rookie of the year had fifteen point. Three points a game. Twenty twenty was only thirteen points. A game But that was in part because thirty points a game was the third highest gray mark for any rookie about season. And so if you look at the past eight years the winner is was in the top three and usually the top two and scorn for rookies of the year. So not only. Is it going to be minutes but the opportunity to actually score the basketball and does the player have the ability to be a big time scored sort of the next thing that we're gonna look at at it also found that If you go back and sort of look at some of the work that kevin pelton is done at espn Fr- almost every season. The combined averages of points rebounds assists per game when you add those averages together. That's the player that's going to win the ward and then finally You know look when you're looking at rookie of the year. You're not actually talking about the player. That's gonna be the best player in five years if you go back and look at past winters. That's often just not the case. It's it's the player that's can have the most opportunity. I'm to really hit those metrics of scoring Minutes per game and then the sort of combined stats together. That's going to win work the year. And so that's going to change to me. The draft order a little bit about who we're going to handicap again for rookie of the

"Think you know twenty twenty and and even you know twenty nineteen saw an uptick almost in going down the social media rabbit bowl and getting caught up in conversations. That aren't the best use of our time. And we're not there to be intentional with our social media usage So you know. I kinda sworn off social media little bit. I let my team the social media for me now is i know i do kind of end up in down that rabbit hole in having conversations that i know are not the best use of my time. It's it's so sad. Sometimes i go to a coffee shop in my town. And you know there's like six rape people standing around and they're all just do it's called doom scrolling. It just means that you're scrolling an infinite way and through instagram. Or whatever it is and i would love if listeners would just take this challenge To when you go on social media to only do it for seven minutes in my book talks about her routine for this but you know without even reading the book. Just kinda commit to same. I'm only to scroll instagram. For seven minutes. And then i'm going to completely stop and set it aside. I honestly think that your productivity would go way up. If if you're just way more intentional about social media and just did it for seven minutes at a time you know maybe just a couple of times in an afternoon just to catch up with friends and scroll through a little bit. That's fine By the way there's this guy Near y'all is another author and very very popular writer. he wrote a book called indestructible. And i totally agree with him. He he and i agree about. Let's not get rid of these tools. They're helpful for social interaction. I'm not telling anybody to stop doing email or tab having meetings you know i'm just saying let's try to do them in a more intentional way. That's kind of the goal. Yeah i agree with that one hundred percent as you know it's in this is the world that we live in and They do have a purpose in place and it's about managing those just like having dessert once in a while isn't going to give us diabetes. But if you have dessert for every single meal then it's not going to be healthy for you so Yeah i totally agree with that. John where can the listeners. Connect with you possibly get some good information about getting your book. I know it's not coming out until january. Twenty twenty two In this this'll be airing before that. But how can they get connected. So i'm really starting early on this. I really believe in all these principles in the and i'm just very excited about it. I have a whole launch team including my oldest daughter's really involved with this as well and we built a website called the It's seven minutes solution. three words. Seven minutes lucien dot com and. That's really the entry point just to get news and information about the book honestly. We haven't even released the cover yards. there isn't a preorder. But i just believe in in what we're doing with this that we actually started this website way earlier than most people would and We've got some giveaways we've got a newsletter and some tips and things like that but honestly as just a way to kind of start connecting with readers as we prepare for the for the launch of the book and then eventually when it's available in january and that's a great idea you know for all of you authors out. There getting started early on that is never a bad thing so we will definitely link that in show notes.

"Intentional with your time and i have done this morning routine for probably fifteen years or more I i won't say i do it. Like religiously every single day but it is saved me so many countless times to just sit down with the journal. Take a deep breath. You know. I don't have my phone around or anything else. I just have a nice pen and a journal. And i and i don't try to commit to like fifteen minutes or thirty minutes because it probably wouldn't work and i just do my seven-minute maureen routine and so then that actually grew to become nine different routines that i write about in the book Another one the mentioned that in. And i think this is just it's crazy to think about Very few of us take breaks. So i have a break It's called the take a break routine and it's also for seven minutes in his teaching. You okay again. Take a deep breath pause for a minute. Think about what you're doing and why you're doing it. Reflect on what you've accomplished so far in a couple hours in the morning and then just do something kind of frivolous and fund For you know a few minutes. I usually suggest a crossword puzzle You know doing just maybe right in journal again reading the comics you know whatever it is something that's completely different from what you normally do And then at the very end of it. I always every routine always talks about reflection in rumination and even the morning routine There's one on planning your day. There's one on b. briefing your day and oh by the way the the second half of the book talks about Mostly about how to break bad habits so the first half is about developing good habits. The second half is about how to deal with social media how to deal with your email even how to do a seven-minute meeting which call a huddle and so the second half is really trying to get you to stop doing things that are that are bad for your productivity And in probably one of my favorite ones with the second half of the book is about social media. Because i i love to talk to you about this topic. Social media is just. It's really a trap for me. And i've gotten pulled into it so many times.

"There's no bombs there's no barriers or anything but that's not real light you know every now and again you you get a detour or above or a hill or something that's going to be more challenging and so you can always drop back down may be on those gears and then as you get onto the smooth and easy again then you can go back up in the gears is. Is that something. That really applies in the situation in another analogy. I think could help people to just thinking about driving a car and you know i have four kids. I taught them all how to drive My wife wanted to have nothing to do with it. But i was. I was the person in the in the passenger seat. Trying to tell them like okay. There's the brake pedal There's the gas pedal and you know. The the the thing about driving car is that the brain is working really hard when you're first learning something like how to drive and that is where the routine comes in. Okay here's where here's how you shifts. Here's how you put your seatbelt on. Here's the brake pedal. Here's the gas pedal your figuring out a routine to go through but when you get into the habit stage When you're driving a car i don't know if you have a commute. I tend to have a commute done most days to an office. I never think about it. I never think about which one's the brake pedal in which one's the gas pedal and it's so nice to not have to think about that. I just have a habit of driving. You know and it gets me to work. And that's the state. When i'm really trying to get people into when you say like let's let's do this seven minute routine in then eventually. Learn to focus eventually. Learn how to do things without having to feel. So you know inundated with information and it's just always so complicated And so that analogy between the bike one and the and the car one. I hope it really hits home that you follow the routines and then it gets easier and then you reach your destination. That really makes sense for you.

"John. Welcome to the show us a little bit more about you. Who the heck are you. You're a good question. So i've been a journalist for about twenty years I started out in the early days about two thousand one. I wrote a bunch of articles for a magazine called laptop. And i have actually written about. I think it lasts counter around fifteen thousand articles in about a twenty year period. And currently i write a column for forbes dot com and So it's it's mostly on social media at covered innovation and technology in then The big news is i have Have a book coming out in january called the seven-minute productivity solution and that is all about productivity. And oh my gosh. You know if we're going to tap into being more productive we're gonna do it seven minutes. let's right. i mean just totally makes sense so the way the way of kind of position. The book is the. There's this term. I'm using called the routine and what it means is that it's like the bear very basic level of productivity. It's what we're doing over a short period of time that It's kind of a repeatable thing it means. Eventually a routine becomes a habit And then a habit leads to good productivity good productivity leads to building a company air starting a you know a new website or something like that or writing a book and so i'm starting at the easiest thing to do in in terms of productivity which is just following a simple routine. Can i help you learn focus. It helps you to be intentional with your time. And then eventually it becomes like a really good productivity habit So i'm happy to walk through that how that process actually works and i have a pretty good analogy for why it works from kind of a brain science standpoint and for those longtime listeners. They know that. I am the queen of analogies. I love them. So jump right in with yours though. So i'm a cyclist and i mean the pedaling kind of the climate so you know gas powered or powered a cycle every day. My wife and i go on long trips and one thing. I've really learned about cycling. Is that you know when you're first starting out. Maybe you haven't done it very much. The lowest gear is your friend and so you start out Maybe you've got a nice bike and you're just in first gear in your kind of learning to just kind of get the pedals going and you're getting your momentum going a little bit and so what that really equates to is that idea of a routine something that's easy to do in my case in my book it's only takes seven minutes. You're very intentional about. I just need to be able to get into this routine and not have any barriers. And you know it's very friction less. I'm going to start moving forward on the sidewalk on my bike without really having to work that hard and it's really cool. When i was writing the book. I found out a lot about the brain science behind this. And when we're trying to adopt something new like a new task I think of maybe building a desk with you. Know the kea instructions when we're faced with kind of really difficult complex house..

"Needs the money to fight homelessness and poverty and support early childhood education. Also in dc. Just last night. There was another shooting in the district. This time in logan circle popular area with lots of pedestrian foot. Traffic last night's shooting comes after two tragic shootings earlier this week. One that left a six year old girl dead. Npd and mayor bowser have began making changes to how the city combat's gun violence. What are those changes right mayor. The mayor authorized unlimited police overtime to combat the shootings and the police. Chief robert conte said he would pull more cops out of their cars and put them on bikes and scooters so that they'd connect better with the community. Both the killing of six-year-old nia courtney. And the shooting. Outside nationalist park during a ballgame. They drew national attention. And that was even before this. These two people got shot last night. As you said in this busy restaurant district near logan circle browsers also calling again on the dc council to fully staff the police force. It had nearly thirty eight hundred officers three years ago. Now it's down to just under thirty six hundred. The council has been unwilling to pay to put the police force at its full staffing level. Finally this weekend virginia. The commonwealth's department of health is recommending all elementary school. Children wear masks when they returned to classes in the fall. Does that include children who have been vaccinated. Bob yes it does. The virginia is strongly recommending that all elementary school children wear masks and that includes those who have been vaccinated but of course very few elementary school age. Children have received vaccinations now. The recommendation is different for middle school and high school students. They are being urged to wear masks indoors. Only if they are not vaccinated. This is not mandatory. It's up to the individual school districts to decide by the way elsewhere in the region. The district has said that all children will be required to wear masks in public schools. This fall and in maryland Prince george's has a policy for now. That requires masks and montgomery counties. The school board is going to decide or at least start deciding at a meeting on tuesday. Robert mccartney's senior regional correspondent with the washington. Post bob as always. "The washington post. Good morning bob. Good morning esther. There is a lot of news to get through this week. Let's start with an update on maryland. Governor larry hogan's signature Good morning bob. Good morning esther. There is a lot of news to get through this week. Let's start with an update on maryland. Governor larry hogan's signature transportation project to widen. I two seventy and rebuild the american legion bridge. The regional transportation planning board reversed course this week and voted to give the project the go ahead. Why did they change their minds. A lot of votes votes changed because of intensive lobbying by hogan and the maryland transportation department and supporters in the highway industry in particular. The virginia delegation was concerned that if the plan collapsed that it would mean. There'd be a long delay before the american legion bridges. Rebuilt that of course carries the beltway between fairfax and montgomery counties. The hogan said that a no vote would cost the state more than a billion dollars that he said would be available from private industry for other road and transit improvements in montgomery county maryland. That's because the project is a public private partnership with private companies putting up the initial investment opponents of the plan said. He was arm twisting on that it was kind of blackmail. The hoge administration did make some modest concessions to invest more money in bus transit in montgomery but the dollar figures involved were really very small pudding. Back of the project on the agenda is a big setback for montgomery county. Executive mark l. rich who opposed the plan as montgomery county council reversed course and supported the project. So the county executive in the county council were on opposite sides. Prince george's county also switched. Its vote in favor of the plan. Now this is not over. The environmental groups promised to continue to fight it among others. And there's a lawsuit that could slow it down at least. And maybe even blocking staying in maryland prince george's county has agreed to pay two point three million dollars to settle a lawsuit brought by some black and latino police officers who sued over racial discrimination compared to to what the county has spent fighting the lawsuit however bob two point three million dollars seems like a drop in the bucket it is the county has spent nearly eighteen million dollars fighting the case over the last two and a half years and the attorneys in the case are gonna get nearly six million dollars in fees. That's almost three times what the the plaintiffs are getting now. The lawyers did say that the attorney's fees would go for future handling of cases on a pro bono basis. The plaintiffs accused the department and three white former leaders of the prince george's police force of fostering an environment where officers of color faced systemic racism in discipline and promotions. The settlement isn't just about money. It also provides for policy changes to make the promotion process more fair. The department will start saying clearly what the possible punishments are for those who engage in racist or discriminatory conduct. This all got settled partly because the cost of the suit had become a political embarrassment for county executive. Angela also brooks shifting now to the district where the council. This week voted to raise taxes on. Dc's wealthiest residents in an effort to fight poverty. It's only the first vote on the measure. Bob what's the likelihood this becomes law. I think that will depend on. How hard mayor bowser decides to fight it. It will require a second vote on the council in two and a half weeks and the mayor is hoping that the council will change. Its mind if it doesn't then browser will have to decide whether to veto the entire budget. In order to stop the tax increase the tax increase did not pass with a veto proof majority by another opponents. Say the city doesn't need to raise taxes now given it's getting more than two billion dollars in federal stimulus dollars but the supporters say that wealthy residents who were not financially hurt by the pandemic can afford to pay more and the city needs the money to fight homelessness and poverty and support early childhood education. Also in dc. Just last night. There was another shooting

Lakers' Drummond Shows Promise Against the Heat

"Andre Drummond, but we've only seen him up until tonight. We only see him for 14 minutes in purple and gold and he got hurt and against the Milwaukee now here he is back tonight twenty seven minutes. That's a lot of minutes 549 from the field 12 boards three assists two steals. No blocks three turnovers five thousand but fifteen points off of 6 from the Line run. Let's start with you. What good and bad. What did you like and dislike about what we saw out of Andre Drummond tonight? And and what do you think about him moving forward? Yeah, so I mean we we talked about it during the game. I texted you guys that basically if he can work on just catching the ball firmly the first time he touches it and not bottling it and get it get swiped around he's going to be incredible. He I mean look fifteen points and 12 rebounds two steals. He did have three turnovers, but I think two of them were in the office like two minutes of the game when again he was like bobbling the ball all places and couldn't get it a hold of it. He'd Butterfingers for the first like five minutes of the game, but once he settled down and just it's one of those things he just accepted the role that he's in he did not try to do too much. He didn't take any of those bad like dumb hook shots that he's known for he didn't try to do any of that stuff. He just played his game. He got rebounds wage jumped the ball and he had some pretty good passes to I mean I point Drummond is an interesting concept.

Change your Alexa Timers

"As i'm sure you know. Many people use their lexi devices to set timers. And have you ever had this happened you a time when you realize it was the wrong time or you realize you needed more time and then you think okay now. I have to cancel that timer. And instead a new timer. Well there's an easier way of doing that and it's just by saying add or subtract time so for example. Let's say you set a timer for your pasta and you say set a timer for seven minutes and you realize no actually. I wanted to be nine minutes. Rather than deleting it and setting a new time or you just say lexi add two minutes to my past a timer and boom. It's done you can also do the opposite. You can say lexi subtract. Two minutes from my passa- timer but then you're pass is going to be well. Maybe like your pasta. Underdone it indicates you get the idea you can add and subtract time from your timers and hopefully that's a little tip that will keep things a little bit easier for you to manage your

So how do you cook rice? And we'll what is your basic method with the knuckles in the water. The basic method is that you rinse the rice as you would you know, whenever you make rice. And then you you cover the rice with enough water. And so if you put your hand, very flat on top of the rice the water should come right up to your knuckles. Now, if you have really really giant hands. It will not work. But if you have relatively normal hands. It does work it does work and also it sort of relies on also cooking based on intuition. But if you just do that seven minute, meditation, the possibilities, if you have not have a very deep problem. Just a typical one with emotion. You'll get better.
