Climate science denier appointed to top position at NOAA

"We're also following the controversy over a client climate science denier who's reportedly appointed to a top climate position in the US. Government C. N. N.'s Brian Todd is joining us right now Brian critics say this is a rather dangerous pick for such a key position right? Wolf critics including scientific watchdog groups are pouncing on this appointment tonight of David Lee Gates. Those critics say this appointment is especially troubling now in the middle of the wildfires, the hurricane season and the coronavirus pandemic. As record-setting wildfires. States as America's southern coast continued to get pounded by more frequent hurricanes. President trump continues his assault on climate science it'll start getting cooler. You just watch and the president's time is facing blistering criticism tonight for reportedly appointing a climate science denier to a top position at America's preeminent weather and climate agency David Lee. Gates has been tapped to be a top deputy at the National Oceanic atmospheric administration known as Noah that's according to NPR and the Washington Post. This is a dangerous pick for Noah because it threatens the thousands of Noah scientists who conduct and communicate climate science. Every day La- Gates has a long record of accepting fossil fuel industry funds and spreading disinformation about climate science according to the Post League Gates was once forced out of job as the state of Delaware's. climatologist because of his research paid for in part by the fossil fuel industry, which cast doubt on the science showing that the burning of coal and other fuels were main factors in climate change at a House hearing last year Lee Gates openly disputed the belief of many climate scientists that carbon dioxide is mainly responsible for heating up the planet that has little to do with carbon dioxide as the demise of the little ice age and warring conditions we've had due to increasing son according to NPR in two thousand, seven league gates helped author a paper funded partially by the oil industry that question scientific findings about the role, of climate change. In destroying polar bears habitats, he now heads to an agency Noah which watchdog groups say has a long history of nonpartisan, very credible work in providing the country with weather and climate information. What kind of effect could lead gates have it? Noah. One watchdog group sites the trump administration's appointments a former fossil fuel industry lobbyists to head the EPA and the Department of the Interior and they have retired there we've seen a altered of reunifications on climate change. We've seen climate websites removed. We've seen climate scientists gagged from communicating with the media and the public critics say this is only the latest move in trump's pattern of denying or trying. To suppress science, he announced that the US would withdraw from the Paris climate agreement. He's dismantled regulations on greenhouse gas and auto emissions Noah itself has at least once shown it couldn't withstand trump's pressure when a branch of the National Weather Service corrected trump's erroneous predictions for hurricane Doreen last year, which he later displayed with a sharpie threatening Alabama Noah disavowed that correction we have data wars going on data is being politicized, but one side of the other being weaponized and when you get into that point were the public can't tell who's telling the truth. It undermines democracy undermines a kind of trust that you need to make a democracy work. CNN reached out multiple times to David Lee Gates to know to the Commerce Department which oversees no and to the White House for response to the criticisms of La-. Gates's appointment. We didn't hear back from any of them but one board member of the conservative think tank the heartland institute which downplays the Climate Change Threat which David Gates is a member of told us that La- Gates will provide much-needed science sanity at Noah which this board member claims. has been taken over by quote climate

"Without hearing, the song still to this day sporting events. This is one of the Staples and written, all kinds of other great songs as well. But he's also a tremendous sports fan met him about fifteen twenty years ago. He came up to me at a remote, I, I couldn't believe he knew who I was. So here he is. Once again, to talk sports with us, the great entertainer, young MC. What's up young hanging in Dave? How you doing? I'm doing great. How's the weather in Arizona? Hot as always getting summer like weather, their first hundred on the on the. Thermometer yesterday in the car, but it's been good. I mean, it's, it's been a good nice mild spring goodbye. Get hot now. But it's good. Well before we get to your beloved, New York Jets here. Well, your thoughts so far on the finals weightings down in game one for the warriors raptors. And I know that could change that we get a competitive series that lasts a while to think we're getting a maybe a little warriors fatigue syndrome, and maybe not having LeBron on the final at a team from Canada. What do you think the reason for the ratings drop is, I think, all of those, I think all of those all of those things factor in the fact that the, the warriors have been in it so many times? It's almost like the NBA's worked made the off season. So interesting, if the Aussies it's becoming more interesting than the season. You know what I mean? So if you ask you ask somebody would you rather results to the finals that would you rather know where where Katie and, and avian and higher, you're going at you wanna know where those, those guys going before they want to know the results of the final? Yeah, the NBA's become a three hundred sixty five a year twenty four seven league. Now, you're right when Celaya first happens when free agency starts, and then the draft, whether that's about as exciting as the finals these days. You're right, right, right. No, no people people want to know about that stuff more much more than they wanna know about that. The winner of the finals. Well, what do you think a drink you being a fellow entertainer sitting there at the at courtside yelling at the opponents wanting up and down on the sidelines given the coach sold Aruba, boy, if I'm raptors fan, I love him, I think getting a superfan like that. And I think it's fantastic. It does see the NBA is kind of kind of torn to it because it does a lot of is what thirty eight million followers online and all that stuff, getting people interested in this series that watching otherwise. So, you know, a couple of more than a couple more incidents. And you'll have people that don't usually watch basketball watching. She what? And the NBA wouldn't necessarily be mad at that young MC's days with you. Radio dot com. Right, your beloved, New York Jets, they take Sam darnold less here. Who looks like he's going to be a pretty good NFL quarterback lady on bell here in the offseason, Mike mcadam though. The general manager fired by the man, he hired Adam Gheysens people in New York, right now, Colin this thing Lakers, type train wrecks, what is your opinion to what's going on with your jets? It it's not as black and white is all that to me. You don't think the thing is the thing of it is being a jet fan. Just look at the last seventeen years, we haven't really had good drafts at all. Like the whole itchy Rex Rex Ryan tenure, if you will you had Mahama Wilkerson and Sheldon, Richardson. But then we had a lot of buses well, so then going into mccaddon getting hired there wasn't a lot of just wasn't a lot of talent there. So it's a kit had basically saved up all the money, and we have a cash face, and then and then mcadams able to come in and really start not only sign a free agents but then, you know, trying to draft and he he he had four in every draft. He got lucky every draft with his first picky got lucky. So he he gets Leonard Williams. And when he picked him at six people thought he go higher. And he got lucky with that he got Jamal Adams, same thing. People go higher, and they felt for the jets Sam Donald last year, they thought he would go number one and we got him at number three and inquisitive Williams this year. You know what I mean? They thought he'd be. The number one team if Arizona didn't didn't want Murray and he starts to three. So each one of those players kinda mast. What was going on with the rest of the draft the same draft yet Christian? Hackenberg Devin Smith. You know what I mean Darren Lee, you guys getting drafted that some someone even in the league anymore, and it's just three or four years, and he's, you know, I I second round picks, but the fact that each one of those years, mechanic, lucky made him look to make people feel like oh now we have pledged they're going to stick around. So he kinda he kinda skated a little bit on that. So I wasn't upset about the firing as much as it was just the timing of it, and I don't really think gays had as much to do with it as much as the owner of see what was going on and in talking to gays and gay saying, well, this is how it's usually done. This is how teams this is how other people do it. I don't think it was much jas Payton, the cabinet as much as it was to own realizing that it was a fitness function of what was going on, because it was even stuff about macaque and not being able to pull the trigger on deals. Here's a great scout, but he wasn't a good deal maker. You know what I mean? So there's a lot of stuff that went into it even before case got that kinda seal McCarron state to me the great rapper..

"But at the same time like I'll be I'll be real curious to see what they actually try. And of course, we don't know what sort of evidence they're gonna bring we don't even know what the charges are. But I will say this straight up if they're just going to try to charge him with publishing documents as opposed to doing something clearly illegal during the collection of those of that material. Then, you know, I'm going to have a hard time believing that that's that's a good idea or worth, you know. Yeah. Certainly expect that there would be child as that were more involved with enticing material that he had some knowledge of exactly how it was a quiet. I think I think there's another option here too, which is throughout all of the thousand sixteen stuff. They would have been a point where he would have become aware and for him to argue that he wasn't would kind of be not believable. So I'm wondering if even needed to be explicitly told by the people who has been in this documentation. Yes, we work for the Russian government. Whether or not the prosecution can make a case that will dude you obviously knew that this was coming from the Russian government because an idiot would think otherwise given information that we knew that you had. I don't know. I mean, there's a lot of noise. Listen to this podcast. Maybe I can I can ride and tell me are I pay my inbox. But yeah, I just I just I don't think it's necessarily the case that he's just going to be charged with publishing stuff. I think I might whack that on top. But I I'm guessing the charge documents going to be pretty thick. Yeah. I imagine they were gonna probably throw quite a few as many as they can see what they can get get to stick. Certainly it would seem too big a belief that that as the persona Philipot that he didn't understand what was going on. Yeah. He didn't stop at that point. Right. And is it reasonable for him to argue that that he's just full who didn't realize. I just. Yeah. Good luck with that. Now, look speaking of Wiki leaks stuff in the courts, the guy who has been arrested in jail, pending trial over the vault seven league, he's being charged with more stuff. Because apparently like this guy is a gun at getting cellphones into prison. And he's been talking about his case to his family and trying to get them to call getting contact with the media the judge to stop. He kept going more charges. Yeah. He really does not seem to be, you know, he's not a sexy, man. Now, he's really not making good life choices there. Apparently, he would have multiple cell phones and cell and was exiting. I think the indictment or the charge said like thirteen different Email and social media accounts and was exchanging material at the court at specific they said he wasn't allowed to Viren credit mail from his cell over. Smuggled cell phones, which I guess, I guess he knows how to arrange a smuggled cell phone and element. That must be useful skill but yet not not growing wealth them. It is not great story here from Lorenzo over motherboard. He's done some digging in the Italian courts and discovered that the hacking team break investigation is dead and finance Fisher has gotten away with it. You know, I've long said that finance Fisher is not an individual is a group and apparently a group with very bloody good op sick. Yeah. Not not very many people whose optic is is really up to this kind of scrutiny. But yet the Italian courts have basically said there is no more avenues to pursue. They've been down all of the insider or X inside. Right. Right. Right. This story because you've got this situation where the company was trying to like throw ex employees onto the bus because they didn't like them to the point where the court is even like, what are you doing like these people clearly had nothing to do with it. It's just a crazy story again. It certainly is. And I you know, I feel bad for the engine is it used to work and.

"It feels like they've lost momentum by the way they're november and december schedule is brutal brutal chargers at the rams packers at carolina minnesota at the niners kansas city hey got a rough schedule and november to mid december and finally arizona i like the future of arizona i think josh rosen is going to be really really interesting but he's not there yet i think they drafted christian kirk from texas am he's gonna be really interesting especially on special teams he's not there yet david johnson does return it running back like him a lot but their offense of line is old and unathletic it was ranked twenty seven league last year and both bradford and josh rosen can be a little brittle and i worry about that i do feel like arizona unlike seattle seattle some better players right now i like the direction arizona is headed in but i always worry when i'm not quite sure what i'm getting with a rookie quarterback and i don't love the offensive line their final six games for the record are rough at the chargers at the packers the got to go to atlanta get the rams at home at seattle even if they're kind of promising i think they could end with a thud so here's my prediction for the nfc west the rams when at eleven and five i am concerned about marcus peters in that locker room in dominancy they are not always the greatest teammates the niners get to eight nate seattle and san francisco seattle's got more talent but i like the momentum and i liked what i get from kyle shanahan garoppolo they'll be sneaky good offensively arizona's not a bad team i like their future i like where they're going i just think next year mark my words they're going to go into that draft in free agency and they're going to upgrade that offensive line because if they can get the offensive line to click watch out for errors after this year i just don't think they're there yet and with that all american quarterback college hall of famer he has been over a decade in green bay some years with far then aaron rodgers and now he's joining us on the show let's bring him in tom clements packers fomer offense coordinator well i've wrote about you i know about new and i finally meet you so you got a couple years of brett farve and then you got a couple years of aaron rodgers and i want you to take my audience into first of all personalities brat was a southern gunslinger aaron was kind of a california cool guy right were they for you as a coordinator little bit of a culture shock i mean it was literally one personality different personality is that hard for you as a coordinator no it's not i just have to gear your approach to the guy you have and as you say brett was a fun guy to be around he was always having fun but when it's time to play football he'd play football even in practice you'd be goofing around but when the play was when he had the run the play he was gonna run the play figure out what happened and then make calculations in his mind what went right what went wrong did this guy do this and so he was good from a great guy to be around so he wasn't hard to be a coordinator for no i'm in he's he ad libbed a lot tom partner he ad libbed lot he did the thing about brett but guys don't realize i think is his he's the son of a coach so he would try to he took coaching well but when i got there he was in his thirteenth or fourteenth year or something he was a rockstar rockstar so you're not going to try to change physically things he he does whereas with a younger guy.

"I think it's great chance betray to be an instant offense of weapons for the hawks actually like that big harry i like trae young just because the opportunity and i think they'll get shrewd or out of there so i like seven to one there i have a forty to one long shot odds okay guilty sal exander out with the clippers i think being in la he's going to get a lot of eyeballs he's going to do some athletic stuff people may buy into the hype there give them a chance and then i also like to roam robinson i don't even know what his odds aren't anything he's not listed but the thirteen pick i know that lou williams there but i think he's going to get a lot of shots and i know that jerry west is a big fan of him and based on the next cj mccollum so someone to look out for so i think i can talk about this that jeopardize my vote i one of the things that's fun about this rookie of the year class is i don't think any of these guys who are going to be the contenders they're going to be on good teams so at that point it just becomes good stats bad team guys and to me two guys jump out i first of all the trae young odds are too high right now seventy one i think is stupid because what's going to happen he's going to go to summer league next week and we're gonna have many ringer staffers that are going to be there to check out some early next week by the way but nobody plays defense in summer league nobody he he went from a situation where in college he's getting chipped in the three guys getting thrown out of them and getting summer league is a free for all there's no defense whatsoever and you saw last year lonzo looked like the greatest point guard of all time in seven league and is going to have a game where he makes like thirteen threes in one of the summer league games and people are gonna lose a fucking minds or add like fifteen assist or as fate yeah he's gonna put up like a forty two and seventeen summer league is like the greatest thing for trae young and i think though seven to one odds drop i would pick so i would i would get in now and that i just think it's a good long shot bet before the ads drop i think bagley is gonna win rookie of the year though because i just think he's gonna put up stats on a bad team and a team that needs his stats don't you think tate is it realistic he could be like twenty two in seven next year twenty and ten days i mean that's what he does yeah he's just getting stats and he's going to give up twenty five points of the other end but i like those two the most the the only other one that i just thought from an odd standpoint was just mildly interesting was was window carter just because i think he's gonna play right because he's the five and the loria the forum yeah and and there's a chance he might be way better than i maybe people realized because he was kind of the secondary duke guy and you've seen his mom come on basically say he sacrificed a bunch of touches because they re class bagley yeah she was very upset about that so i have mine him because he could be like if there if he's like a sixteen and ten guy next year in the bulls are actually good in eight seed and people are like oh it's should be a winning team that gets rid of the into that but i would bet on bagging all right that's that's a really fun group rookie so i can't remember nobody being a better favourite than to one usually we have one guy who's who's a little bit up there all right let's let's go to baseball so these ads are as of sunday the yankees were minus two hundred to win the haley's the red sox plus one sixty and they're playing yep this weekend parlay kid bill it's funny though the odds of actually the yankees are now minus one seventy red sox plus one forty so few days here it's really changed and well let's face it i mean in this at least so we're talking about the al lease this we had a big series coming up a lot of fun right per perfect timing for.

"He just doesn't want to take a hit any more you know i understand that offensive line i talked about earlier with rookie quarterback's young quarterbacks you hit him enough and you can you see it with people's play you're putting them in the wrong situation will ally with that offensive line it's taken a toll and i'm not saying he still doesn't have some good football left in them i think he does but there's no doubt that you lie is in decline and he thirty seven years old and you the giants just may not have an opportunity sitting there number two overall to draft his successor you're sitting in that position take the best quarterback on your board that's the value at that number two pick and if you really really if you're the giants can't get onboard and excited about anybody at that number two spot then ideally find a way to trade back to five or six the buffalo bills are very excited they been amassing draft capital to try and trade up and get a quarterback they would love that number two spot if you're the giants and you don't want to go all the way back to twelve then find a find somebody else make it a three i know it's hard finding find somebody else making a three team deal get someone else involved and find a way to get back trade into that five or six spot a lot of evaluators draft evaluators have said there are about seven non quarterbacks they're about seven league talents in this draft so you wanna be sitting there in a position to take one of them and if you're the giants and you really feel like chubb barclay and nelson are the top three non quarterbacks and find a way to put yourself in the fifth or sixth spot and get one of those players that's what the giants do as for the jets with all the with all they gave up to trade into the top three there must be three quarterback prospects in the strath they love or you wouldn't do it i'm assuming that's darnold.

"In the fourth quarter of last year at sitki on manufacturing uh but as you say on the on the household spending side things looked decidedly more subdued inflation has been running above target for a most of last year that's outpacing people's pay grade said people feel a school as in real terms on their incomes and that's really showing through even the retail sales numbers that we had for december even with christmas in all the sales and so on uh didn't really provide a beasts say for the bank of england it is a mixed picture on the other hand they look and then they see the labor market is still creating jobs fell a fairly solid pay so it's a difficult decision for them as you say they're not going to do anything this month as far as we expect bonds we will be looking for clues as to whether they think growth is strong enough inflation pressures the high enough that they might want to do something again quite soon so what does it mean for its full calls them when you're looking at growth and inflation in the next two years so i think her imphal the growth forecasts will be up a little bit that's probably more just a mechanical interpretation of the day to that we've already had on inflation it might actually come down a little bit so the banks been forecasting inflation remaining above target over the over the next couple of years at what we've seen since they launched at the that's that's a full costs in november is that the currency has strengthened oh prices have risen but they are expected to fullback over the next couple of years say actually it is possible that inflation comes back down again and if they say actually inflation is now expected to come back down exactly to a target will not perhaps means that they don't need to raise rates quite say much but as you say that there might be a slight increase in the growth forecasts excuse me but the uk is still languishing near the bottom of the g seven league table for the shia and speaking to the program a couple of weeks ago the governor mark county said that once the nature of the.
