"That beats the previous coast to coast electric record set by kyle. Connor my buddy from the friday. Podcast i do with him. Kyle forty four hours. Twenty six minutes in the porsche tyke on the tesla baited by kyle really wasn't trying to do the whole crazy speed thing. It was more about looking at the electrify america infrastructure and driving across the country whereas the modest did gap to one hundred and fifty five miles an hour. They say the average paid was clearly a lot lower and he would usually arrive at charging stations. He said with ten percent left attentive tesla superchargers with less than ten percent and leave a fifty percent took eighteen minutes on average per charging stop and spent a total of seven hours waiting. He swapped the wheels for the twenty. One's made way for nineteen teens. The tempest wheels more efficient and apart from that it was a stock model s. Which found on a rental website and spiked to the owner. And said i want to drive it. Seven thousand miles across the country and back and the owner of this new model s. Long range yet go for your life is unlimited mileage. And so he did. And he's the new cannonball. Ev record holder puzzling to road and track in the show. You can read more staying with model less less about the speed of the driving but the speed of the charging another one of my friends. A guy could tell me who i do. A podcast with on. Fridays has also got hold of the new model s. Plaid and seventy mile an hour range test of by the way tomes range tests a legendary But he also did a challenging test a complete run it down to zero running on fumes so to speak and then charging it all the way earlier this week. He did exactly that on twenty twenty one more or less plaid. He drove the vehicle three hundred miles. That seventy miles now constant down to zero and then ended up a super charger. When the car was literally running on zero percent. He plugged in and what happened when it was a v. Three cpa charging station and immediately the car went to one hundred and forty seven kilowatts charge speed and that i'd be happy with any day of the week but that was just the beginning after a few minutes after two and a half minutes in fact when he got to five percents state of charge then jumped up from one four seven two two fifty and it stayed a to fifty two hundred and fifty kilowatts all the way through for seven minutes thirty three percent and it started to drop down at thirty three percents..

"Am local time finish at seven pm but it looks like they are our longtime slots within that range. Right next up here will go through this quickly. But we've got a new study published by jd. Power there twenty twenty one at us automotive performance execution and layout study or appeal study sort of a proxy for how much customers are like in their car and for the second year in a row. Tesla has scored at the top of this albeit with a qualifier as usual of j. power not being able to collect data in all states because tesla doesn't provide it to them so i- thousand points scale tesla got on eight hundred ninety three score eight hundred ninety six last year but still higher than any other brand porsche. Coming in at eighty two coming in as the runner up in the premium segment and then for the mass market segment. Dodge leading the pack there at also eight eighty two so nice to see that not a big surprise. Desa customers still liking their cars. I next we've just got a bit of news on other electric vehicles. So i mentioned yesterday that there was the leaked information or broken embargo. I guess about the lucid getting five hundred twenty mile. Epa range rating on the lucid air dream edition. I always today has now posted a press release confirming that as well as the ranges for a few other. Trims remember they split the dream edition into addition range dream addition performance than they've also got the less powerful grand during so with a nineteen inch wheels the ranges year span from four hundred seventy one miles up to five hundred twenty miles and with twenty one inch wheels from four hundred fifty one miles up to four hundred eighty one so it really good ranges than if we look at fueleconomy.gov we can see the actual listings here for the miles per gallon efficiency that can be converted over into watt hours per mile and that gives us a guess at what the battery pack sizes might be here so in a press release last year lucid had claimed to get their epa range of five hundred seventeen miles with a one hundred thirteen kilowatt hour battery pack which obviously would be very impressive. The model s. uses about one hundred kilowatt hour peck. Anyway if we look at the fuel economy page we can see that. The lucid air dream addition range version is getting a hundred and twenty five miles per gallon equivalent or it says there twenty-seven kilowatt hours per one hundred miles just for a little bit more. Specificity will use the hundred twenty five miles per gallon equivalent. We can convert that over two miles per kilowatt hour that ends up being about three point seven miles per kilowatt hour which four or five hundred twenty mile vehicle would mean about one hundred forty kilowatt-hours however the epa states this based on energy drawn from the wall and there are some loss in getting that all the way into the battery so we look at the model s..

"Kilowatt usable. And if you need to the podcast that just means you don't get access to all of the battery they keep it as a bit of a buffer and it means that's one of the nice happy side effects is the charge speeds and indeed charge cubs. We'll explain that in a moment can be ready. Good on the vw. Id four peak rates meant to be one hundred twenty five kilowatts but toamasina one hundred thirty one or is nice to have your expectations exceeded but all the way up to thirty percent. He was charging it. One hundred twenty three kilowatts or more like say that took twelve minutes and if you just need a quick splash-and-dash to get home and then you can charge the car overnight. Slowly that's great like a twelve minute. Stop is really just grabbing a coffee and if you go to thirty percent already but if you don't get the fifty percent without twenty minutes again exactly arduous is an after fourteen minutes. It was eighty percent now again after. Like you know half an hour of on a road trip. He was stopped behind for now. It starts to get on a little bit so maybe it only goes to the full eighty percents. But if you do you'll have taken in sixty seven kilowatt hours so while the vehicle was charging from zero to eighty the average power that it took one hundred ten kilowatts that's eighty eight percent of its peak right. Let me explain why that's important. There is no point. It's all in a navy having a headline figure of how quickly it charges if it does it for ten seconds of the beginning of a charge and then it just quickly ramps down slows down and it takes forever to charge and thomas point was from zero percent to eighty percent. The average was one hundred ten kilowatts and that is amazing. Eighty eight percent of its peak. Right like i say so a really fascinating video if you like me are into kind of understanding like what does this mean like okay..

"The one that's in china they look the same as that surely orb similar right because it's based on the platform. The point is how close they get to the concept vic with the styling. Well it's hard to tell and on one hand it's wearing cammo so it looks you know it's got stale wales and it just looks a bit rubbish boring and bland because the prototype the comsat vacant. We stunning all. My goodness might get now. I'll buy one if even halfway to that though they'll have a hit on the hands and it's the kind of vehicle that yeah i know i live. Here by the beach is kind of resurfaced culture. Down here in poole in dorset i. I have a wetsuit bottom surf by the way. But even then you know you haven't got a lift by the beach to one of these vans even then it will be depending on the price. Obviously be so compelling to have something like this in the driveway which would soak up all you know we could use it as a van it would suck up all the family judy's that we have now we got a little one. It would have bikes in the back and yet it's not so big that you couldn't drive everyday to the shops. I probably have that and the very small. Either you know an emo pad e bike. Maybe zoe or something for a second car but we have this first car because it's just the perfect size perfect utility and it's all the and it's actually this could be the first of the platforms that comes with a bigger battery. And not the fifty or seventy seven kilowatt hour. But the i mean the the concept vehicle four and a half years ago they said would have one hundred eleven kilowatt hour battery pack for combs that cars. You just make up numbers to sound good right but he does. They are an indication of where you're going but they don't actually have to make that but imagine this with a big battery because it's going to be less aero efficient. oh man. i'm so excited about it. Can you tell. I just want them to make it now. So why is this story important. Why is it the headline story. Because if they're now testing these mules with even a half finished version of the the body. It means they're on track. It's a two thousand twenty two vehicle here in europe. Twenty three in the us vw. Make it now because number one. Bring it on all right. Bmw a finishing up. The i three era in the us this july stopping production for the us market. Bmw de la bulletins. This has gone. Officials saw the production ends in july over. The last year inventories been down that low. Which is ever been there. Are one hundred eighty build slots left for us buyers bmw now very much forward facing The i four the imax looking forward to that not looking back at the i three anymore when he goes production It'll be a twenty twenty two end of production probably hearing europe. Stakeholder volkswagen's soon to decide on the future of their luxury brand begetting oliver blum who's volkswagen's management board member and ceo of porsche said today now porsche is boss. Oliver bloom early vitiates. There were intense discussions. On what the heck do we do with gatty. Well however you say that in german and those discussions were ongoing but at the time earlier this year roommate was described as being a good technological fits adding the decision will be made in the first half of the year. Well whereabout three days away from the first half of the year being over. Watch this space links to electricity. Msn dot com in the show notes. If you'd like to read more that's mega story right because rematch with the best one in the world. They've doubled their workforce over the last few years from five hundred to one thousand you know. They're not the biggest car company in the well. They've launched the navarro. Which is the new name for the sea on the school to only the second vehicle they've made and again those are vehicles which they don't even keep themselves so they don't have you know a fancy showroom in mata he's like well i'm keeping them zero zero one and that's my because they don't have the money they need to sell all of the 'cause they can make keeping any back for themselves to put up you know in a museum so it's still company the is yes making multi million dollar hyper-cars. Yes doing incredible things with technology and not taking any of that white but still a very small company so i would say in this instance Punching above their weight. I don't say if i can be on between you. And i and i probably wouldn't say if i've always in the same room as the boss of vw grape man. I'm just so pleased that vw didn't just get the checkbook out and byron. I'm so pleased that didn't happen because you get the feeling that they've done. Multi has done what he's done with that company because they've been able to and you know being kind as i can be to all mega-corporations they both move slowly and also the people wanna get fired and so then it have as much entrepreneurial spirit you know pete. Nobody speaks so man. I'm pleased that vw. Just die. We'll we'll buy rack and let them run your gatty site. That's let them stand alone. Let them do that thing. But interestingly let them then run beauty because all come are going to have to go. Ev at some point. It's just wendy do it. Like ferrari lamborghini maserati names. That are so linked. The sound of their petrol engines are going to have to go full electric they. It's not in question. So when do they do that when you gase go. All electric and what kind of began gets made with rimec in judge. I would say a really really good one all right. Let's move on. Let's talk about a massive battery. Going live in the uk this to me by listening to fill alan email this to hello at avenues. Daily dot com a new giant battery storage system for recharging vs going live in today. Creating a blueprint for other towns and cities go net zero the fifty megawatts. Our lithium ion battery is directly connected to the uk's high-voltage transmission network which is run by national grid and recent guests of this podcast on saturday. Last week's special was indeed graham cooper from the national grid. Now there is an eight kilometer private wire delivering power from the battery to ev charging locations that gets distributed around the city of oxford including the uk's largest public challenging hub that has up to ten megawatts of power on site that features thirty eight ultra rapid charging stations and fast charging stations delivering the energy to av drivers. Night and day. It's oxford's park and ride and it opens later this year. Fast ned installing ten charges at the hub. They are going to be three hundred. Kilowatts the really fast high-powered charges. So unless you own a audi each. Gt or an ionic. Five or six sleigh off of those ones because your car can charge on a slower one but those cars need the false charges. Matt allen is the ceo of pivot power. The company behind this power is an etf company now and they are doing. I think pivot power that talk about that charging house. They want to build some of the most interesting and also to do with mega battery. Storage projects was interesting. Things thinking outside the box in this country They have led the one million pound government backed scheme and matt said quote. This is the first grid scale battery to directly connect to the transmission network of the uk and represents a key milestone for the completion of the energy super hub in oxford our mission to accelerate the uk to net zero planning forty similar sites around the country and quite goes back now by that parent company. If you wouldn't bet against them. I'll pop linked to fleets europe where i got that story from if you would like to read more about the oxford super hob i'd also edf renewables ownership of pivot. Pal you can find them. Pivot dash power dot co dot uk. Okay let's talk about what they're doing in oxford. The park and ride provides fifty points catering for range. Visa speeds visitors can charge in minutes if they need to stay with their vehicle or going into work for the day or shopping. In the city they can charge on a much slower level to charger. It says a connection to the national grid high voltage network with the hybrid battery storage system as maury vs hit the road. We need more battery storage but more energy generation but also more choice of to charge. And that's a that's a public education job like a little podcast to try and teach people about issues. But you can do that as well as you make. People who may be buying electric car one day or your neighbor bison eva and you know you can have those conversations about how when where and to charge. And if you're leaving your car for hours on end sticky on a seven kilowatt post. And i think i i told you. The story on the podcast. Last week i went to an insult. Georgia may here. Which is fifty kilowatt fast charger and there was a renos zoe on it which was full zoe. So is one of the ccs plug obviously because they panicled plugs. Those instable units. Do i say something to the owner of zoe. Dude you're nine thousand nine percent and you're blocking dc fast charging now. I didn't need the charge because it was local to me if someone was driving through dorset and they needed that charger stuffed. There's a guy nine thousand nine percent left is gone. He was on a night where he was like left the car huge education job. And that's the responsibility so many levels all right moving on. Let's talk about tesla's full. Self-driving beater. I don't talk about it. A lot on this podcast. Because you know. There're people who are big fans of elon musk's promises and there are people.

"Three super charger and it got some stunning speeds now when they plugged in five percent. So it's pretty low of charge. It started off one hundred forty up to about eight percent. It ramps to one hundred and sixty but then between eight and ten percent full ramps mega quake to two hundred and forty six kilowatts. Then it's utterly flats it's drawn with a ruler on the charge curve. It's completely flat. Two hundred and forty six kilowatts from ten percent all the way through to thirty to thirty two percent of eighty four percent Only motor trend Charging tests and then typically it does fall off very quickly. Tesla's often do by the way And but it's a nice steady cub. It's not stepped cup because battery voltage doesn't go down in steps An an answer. The jayan is a nice groff down to one hundred percent zero one hundred percent. But it's it's pretty steep So if you are between supercharging stations that are close together and you can just blast between them and turn up but ten percent and leave at thirty percent of hotline that you'll be going so fast. Then the charge curve goes down pretty quickly. it's still taking about one hundred and forty kilowatts at fifty percent full and then down to about four forty kilowatts of eighty five percents. Will you be leaving you believing pechanga around eighty percent maybe before actually now motor trend. Say the nfl testing they preconditioned. The battery in other words navigated to the supercharge ambient temperature seventy one degrees and it's fifty one minutes to go from five to nine thousand five percent and of course you'd never do that in the real world. Not least you might. You might hug by the way you wouldn't do it on a road trip or dc fast charging that eighty seven kilowatt hours they extrapolated that it's usable battery is ninety seven kilowatt hours three kilowatt hour buffa as we saw charging curve description of just gave you. It didn't indeed hit about two hundred forty six kilowatts v. three supercharge between ten and early thirty percents. And if you are turning up at a supercharge then yeah Between five and ten percents is about right as for that claim of one hundred ninety seven miles in fifteen minutes. Well pretty much accurate with the model s. Plaid vawa.

"Pack in that car only platform bigger than thirty five kilowatt hours. Which is in there and i say that because they've used all the space they've got it's a small platform and also other. They go battery supply contracts to get hold of those batteries so knowing that it was so small when they released the car to head this criticism of the past they said yes above a bigger battery is worse for the planet so because mazda loves the planet putting in a very teeny weeny battery and that means we're super green right that five kilowatt hours i. I never bought in when it was announced. I still don't buy it. But will they follow that through with the three vs. They've promised that will they are today. I really hope not because that five kilowatt hours is good too absolutely nobody and it's not the fact that it's the battery is so small. It's the fact that the Msmx thirty is also the slowest dc fast charging car on the market. So the most mx thirty. I think even like thirsty. No what is usable. Like twenty nine point something usable. Thirty maybe scrapes thirty kilowatt hours useless thirty five. It's like thirty. Kilowatt hours usable. You're going back to a nissan leaf and years and years ago had a battery pack of this size and they just can't make a bigger one at master. Ac power six point six kilowatts which is damn slow dc fast charging absolute max power. Thirty seven kilowatts. Brilliant and ebay. That's out in twenty twenty one with thirty seven. They've made a stink of a car in my opinion. And let's hope that the next three that master release also stinkers. Here's a car. That's the opposite of that definition. Oh by the white coming up on the pod calcium we'll talk audi q. Full eight-run how far it goes will look the batteries. Being meeting. Gemini and hondas clarity gets canceled. Okay let's talk about like say the opposite of a stinker and that would be the model s. plaid the epa rating is now in. Its three hundred forty eight miles which isn't great. So the tesla press. You know who. I'm talking about those websites that are not really new sites such tesla news kind of blogging puppy things that just rave about them. All the time pointed out the the test on twenty one inch wheels so it would go further on the nineteen's And also saying yeah but for call with this performance who cares how far it goes because it's the world's greatest and you like well no not really because tesla was the range kings and now they're going to be battling lucid which us five hundred and seventeen miles and this new model s us three hundred and forty eight and that's epa and we know tesla's hit every so it's the opposite to the porsche tycoon. City way shit so real world is always going to be far worse. New model less plot has received the epa writing now three hundred and forty eight earlier this week. We we need the efficiency one hundred and twenty mpg e For the long range and the the the mileage was four five miles on the long range which is brilliant. Earning school he said that he went into production lost november. Now we have the spec sheets. Courtesy of at fred over ask electric who points out. The powell plus has a top power of nine point six kilowatts. At how much power you can droughts of the thing at once it was previously five kilowatts with as continuous with seven kilowatt. Peak tesla has a new in verte with integrated breaker. So again. if you're watching the version this podcast online. That's what is now sitting on. Top of the powell wall plus gives the installation and new look and they set on that cole was all about making installations of powell more simple. That's opa the conversation. They won't sell you one of these now on. Its own so no mention of price in this. I i happen to say The spec sheet says that it still has thirteen point five kilowatt hours storage which is cool very very decent and yet like i say now in an increased continuous grid. I must add so only when your power gets cutoffs. If you are disconnected from the grid of nine point six kilowatts. I of think why you'd need to pull so much. But i guess. I'm wanting to country where you know. Maybe a couple of air conditioning systems and those kind of systems that when they fire up have a very big load on your circuits and then they tend to take down and other takeover will shut off completely sub fridge. Does i guess. I think anyway again. No engineer so That that peak. I guess that is useful to have a higher peak output. When you're operating off grid. I see that a lot when we talk about storage home energy storage. And all powell and things. We've moved into this house. Four years ago never had a power cut now living in the middle of a city. A town but al grit doesn't go through so maybe you live somewhere where you do get regular palkot saw on and off and on aware of those issues that make the world news in australia brown outs. And obviously texas. What happened recently. So i'm not saying it doesn't happen and it's not useful up. This looks good stuff. From from tesla a gradual improvement on night and day improvement. Like i say no mentioned price. Because you can't buy one of these on its out and you got on the shop and buy one of these You have to have tesla solar panels on your roof which is fabulously difficult. It's you thought making 'cause was hard because at least you only designed.

"Sticking up and free floating in terms of the screen. It was okay. It was a little high for my liking. It was too high. Forty t for me to use Kinda comfortably i. I'm used to screen spending a little bit further down but that would take some getting used to but had the two screens so has the screen behind the steering wheel. Which is the driver info. Had everything on that you need to know the spit nice and big speed. Because i did find myself going over thirty accidentally in the in the speed limit sections and then having to off because it's easy to go fast in a navy so that was nice. That and then the gear selector is attached to the screen on the right. And if you've seen the bmw. I three guests like to this. I would say is heavily inspired by that you turn it once for dr once again or click it further for be mode which should be stronger region and then and then often away and then you put it back towards us. Do neutral number of us region. Let me talk about that. Not super powerful. I like really strong region. And i like modulating my right foot. My wife doesn't again. that's very subjective. Thing people in the vehicle. It'll tell you You know with all suddenly you must have this. You must have that strong region blah blah blah blah blah but equally doing seventy on the motorway. And you let off you want a cruise. You want to freewheel. Because then a lot of region is not the most efficient way to get your destination like a really strong region and then just driving with one pedal but it was not strong enough personally for me but it was easy to drive so i just go in and drive. I guess is my first conclusion. Which i'll come back to the end of the podcast. I just got in and drove. So richard left in the car and so once the keys in the car. It's all there's no button on the vw. Id four so there's no. There is an on off button hidden if you want to turn the car on enough but there isn't get in the car you put it into drive and you put away which is the way. It should be an old levi's because you shouldn't have an on off button. It really need it again. At the end of the drive. I go in. I got to the end of the drive. I stopped i pushed the handbrake button which is kind of on the end of the shift and just left and i walked away in the cartoons itself off so my driving impression of is you could get into this from a combustion car and just drive and i think that's the key with the vw. Id full because they'll be people coming from guam's from gulfs from other vw's that finance is coming to an end. The lease is up right. Where do i go. What do i drive next and auditing anybody if they're gonna spend around forty thousand pounds. This car costs now. a should be thinking about combustion. 'cause it doesn't make any sense. A tool to be getting into. The world of diesels. Particular fills is exhausted. Replacements catalytic converters all of that nonsense because this car does every absolutely everything. I think really really well again not gonna win. The draft drag strip won't win the top speed ones. But a did absolutely everything. I could possibly want to really really well now. Didn't have a chance to play with the app. Or have a really good rummage through the car. I did not running on twenty inch wheels. Which is the first ide- spec. The twenty inch. Wheels looked good. Didn't have a chance to play with any of the driver assistant stuff. I did notice on my short drive. That pulled me back into the center of the road. So that must have been turned. I was drifting a bit to the right sent me. I was like oh okay. Didn't know it was very subtle and gentle and worked really really well like i said the screen was was good. It was bright there. I think they could capacitive or capacitive buttons. The run along the bottom of it the same ones that the steering wheel. Now if you've driven a recent vw. Like latest gulf. The steering wheel is just a brilliant piece of design. It's got clicky buttons. It's the evolution of everything that they've learned about usability. It just works the vw. Four doesn't have those house a shiny surface where the buttons are and there are some ridges so you can kind of feel your way but i know that when i'm driving cars that have clicky buttons on the steering wheel own more buttons. I didn't take my eyes off the road. If i'm so setting cruise control over reducing the know cruise control speed temporarily or you know whatever follow distance. I can do that just by touch. Signed goes for turning things up at like up and down volume wise. I can just do it in what there's nothing wrong with the knob and you know an an a physical button sometimes. Even take your eyes off the road for safe. This had some buttons on the whale. The i think they've got right yet. Because it gives you a little bit of feedback when you push it but a lot of swiping if you want to change the volume you can swipe up and down with your finger and the same goes for the heating but really just give me a volume knob because that isn't broken like that piece of design in the world is in broken. It's like light switches. I see a lot of interpretations now. Small lights and smart light switches. And or but you know what you go into a room a light switch it just works. It's a piece of design that doesn't need to be fixed. There's nothing wrong with it. I don't think i could get on with the steering wheel without a bit. I'd need a test a test for the weekend and have apply. Because i didn't like it but they apart from that i did pop in ecoed. I did papa income foot mode. They are some. There's a mode button on the big screen. That's one of those not soft touch buttons. You i mean. And i couldn't feel any difference so i'd like to tell you. Oh yes echo was very strong region and comfort dull. The accelerator in sport was really reactive. I was on roads that were thirty. Forty and sixty miles an hour. I couldn't really tell a big difference like maybe that's why i'm not reviewing house for a living the whole time. The cough l. very much responsive too. I wanted it to do. Everything just walked usb c connections up front and rear as well so loss of usability stuff in there in terms of families charging tablets for the kids and all those kind of things big enough battery like i say seventy seven kilowatt hour pack. Probably all you need. Let's talk to someone who has driven this car in one journey. Six seven hours from scotland to the south coast and what he thinks of as the owner of the car and richard from simon's s dot co dot. uk chat with him to ask about his impressions of the vw. Eighty-four have a listen. So how long would you say your road trip was coming back.

"So in the future, we're going to be finding out. You know we don't WanNa get into anymore conflicts and wars and problems because you know those things have limited Serve and they cost a lot of money to get them out of the ground and also there are a lot of. Emissions. Of Electric Vehicles takes thirty three point seven kilowatts is about one gallon gas and that varies what is the cost with all these coal fired plans to make that electricity to power the electric car. So there's a lot of things that you really have to study what's go full cycle economics what does it really really costs and You really have to start looking around the world child labor that's required to source a lot of these rare earth minerals to power electric cars well that certainly. Puts a different perspective on it and people could buy it if they want. But people should be American people should know all the facts and that's what this show is all about getting all the facts out to the. American people so they. Better be smarter than that. No you always get the truth out I was very excited to hear today Dr. Rush. On your show because he's the ones who actually published the real data and study that shows that drowsy. Clark, and when used early on the first three or four days works well, and that's been my observation with other physicians telling you that along the front lines. So he got into some trouble for coming out and saying the truth, but it's like Tamiflu doesn't work when you give later but it works early on and Congratulate Talk Risk for getting the truth out in the real numbers and the real statistics on my docket clerk. Los. Thank you for coming on and and keeping the American. People informed in. We'll catch up again next week. Thank you and God bless America. How blessed?.

"And you can have any combination all engine electric and it says in a media acceleration response any speeds You can access the battery pack as well at very high speed, which is key to some of that efficiency as well although you know when you driving around town, that's really where a plug in hybrid comes into its own. If you can keep the gas engine turned off anything when you just doing your chores, your commute, the usual stuff, and then you if you have to use the petrol engine if you have to it, you know get the cruise control. Sixty seventy eighty, whatever you speed is and then crews that is when you can use the power of the combustion engine not accelerating up and down through the gears and wasting energy. Of course, you got regional as well when you're driving around town so you can make the argument both ways plug in cars and I think I have done over the years but these kinds of calls will be very, very useful for the people that don't want full electric just yet. Let's also talk about the BMW X. Five because the x five and a lovely car the M five beautiful the new X. drive forty, five, eighty longtime tests with the gang also express and the main man this defile. Notes and I quote my forty three point, five miles per gallon average is some way short of the official two, hundred miles per gallon he says, and I'm managing to get around forty seven miles from the battery. It takes awhile to charge though the pack is twenty kilowatt hours the same size as on the original Masan Leaf and the reason for the x five decent range he says. Well Yeah let's dig into that. So the new BMW X. Five X. drive forty, five, a stupid name for too long. However, the that naming conventions I will go with it. Yeah. Onboard battery of twenty, four kilowatt hours but twenty-one usable must add fifty four miles electric official, Steve. Getting. forty-seven. He's a very experienced journalists driven. Plenty of evs hey you know how to eat that. He'll know how to drive that in electric mode, and so I think that's about as good. A data point is you're GONNA get forty-seven miles real wells but the charging is with these BMW's and correct me if I'm wrong if you're a BMW expert, this is why they fold down for me. They have a three point seven kilowatt on board charger. Now. As batteries get bigger in plug INS I would love them to have some DC fast charging. For when you're on the road. Admittedly that comes at a cost more hardware, just more stuff to put inside the car if you are going to stick with AC charging on Boccia. please. Make it seven point something. Three point seven kilowatt on Georgia to discharge a twenty four kilowatt hour battery please. BMW. Make those charges quicker because it means that if you are. So you get home I mean if you get home from work if you are commuting to work these days but in other words if you've if you've depleted the battery all day, you have got to charge it every single night and in full and even if you're GonNa Nice quick warbucks on your house, it's not going to charge and quicker, and so that's frustrating. GonNa to you're going to be giving seven hours every night recharging also frustrating if you're on a navy.

"Simple It's You know it's it's all connected and It's the same thing in your phone. For instance when you plug in your phone To a charger it It's a tiny buttery compared to the voter a new car over the phone and say the laptop for instance They charge at the same time. And some of the power from the wall goes into the The the sort of the circuitry running the circuitry and And any sort of leftovers will Will charge the battery. In case of laptops are quite often happens that If you run your your laptop very very high in a all the are very busy and GPS and all that And you crank up your Your Brightness Laptop. Your battery will actually be drained. Even though he loves plugged in it's because again you know power kind of flows where it's needed The resistance is lower when but it needs to go somewhere. All those electrons are needed. Somewhere else And that's the way it will go. It's very very simple. let's Let's go back to the The other examples that I all the questions that I often get us you know what votes your kettle. And you know what I tend to kettle on in the House. And the car will socially we're just GONNA train the grade so most houses in the UK have a supply of hundred amps to the house. Single face hundred UMP That's a hundred and forty volts. He can to the conflation yourself now. you know. How many Watts or kilowatts is. It's a lot of power right so Your car actually. I'm GonNa do this calculation as I speak. Which is about. But the 'em so got this week up this week of this. So He got twenty four kilowatts out of that. We need seven thousand to charge the CAR. We left with seventeen We put the kettle on kettle takes about three kilos onto three. We'll have to fourteen. We put the oven on. Albanese is about two. We left with twelve kilowatts. Let's put the Electric showroom some of the Mushy. Do five kids so to three was still left with seven kilowatts and guess what thinks like. Microwaves Kettles Any of Blows like that. They're not linear low loads like car which is charging you know seven kilowatts constant for the majority of the time when you touch the buttery when strained Things like cattle or your or your microwave or your oven They only need as much energy as is required to sort of To bump out the heat in the whatever the heating up So that the loads going to vary it's GonNa Kinda jump up and down so as you as you can see I can do this calculation itself but the of Dundas very good cook aggression and still is still at seven kilowatts. And guess what if you have to electric cars at the time WHO You could still you know. Charge the other one at the same time So not a problem not a problem and generally your Your Lowe's like that. They're not going to be on for hours. Unlike your electric car So not an issue. I I think looking at the time. We have been talking for half an hour now and the I'm sure you get the gist. Now Right The What can I say? Hopefully that answers quite a lot of questions and and kind of gives you more a bit more understanding and don't don't ever feel like this is complicated or or though this advance. Knowledge basic basic like the The voltages and the current those are basics for a reason The the fairly easy to cross went. I think going falls into the future. The should be something that everyone should be capable of understanding. You don't need to be muffs jeans or physicists to to get these things seriously.

"There at one hundred and fifty kilowatts all the way up to almost eighty percent charge. So that's how fast to get that eighty percent. So you can get from zero to eighty percent in under thirty minutes. Nice and go. Radio and then even after it starts to ramp down, it's still because the, the they're doing such a good job of the temperature control. It's still charging much faster than any other DC drought there. So at eighty percent charge superchargers only giving you about thirty kilowatts and you're still getting a hundred and fifty from the from the electrify America charger. And even we were watching it, even as we're at ninety eight percent charge. It was still pumping fifty seven kilowatts, which bastard than a peak for an BMW three or Nissan leaf for most other vs. So it's, it's really very fast charging all the way through, and you don't really have to think too much about. Okay. I wanna get my battery down. So I get the match charge rate in there. You just you know, whenever you need to charge it. You can it. Well, that's great. And how did it Dr feelgood? Yeah. Really? Well, if you like driving an Audi which to drive, an eight the brain, ice experience, you know, very smooth ride. It's exceptionally quiet. The wind there's like almost no windows at all in this vehicle. You don't have a lot of engine noise either. Right. What, what? You know what he did with this vehicle is rather than trying to directly challenge, the tesla model X, and doing ludicrous mode, and things like that. They tried to make it as much like an Audi as you know, the what customers want in a car except it's electric. And so it's very nice interior finishings great materials finish. You know, it's very quiet rides. Really? Well, it handles the presently while we drove up sage canyon road to Sacramento and a vehicle aways over fifty five hundred pounds at handles remarkably. Well, one of the interesting details inside Audi in your, you know, you've got that M I control. Knob. They don't use a touch screen the, the first outy to adopt a touchscreen display but it's not a it's not like your typical like tapping on your ipad or in your tesla, where he just tap on things. And you know it response it's actually more like the it's got haptic feedback, and it behaves more like current apple track pads on the MAC books. So click. Yeah, you actually have to press a little bit. So it's like pressing a button. And you know you get that feedback so it feels like depressing. Switch, it's up. There's, you know, it's obviously just sheet a blast there, which takes a little bit of getting used to and because it's still a touch, and you still have to look at it. It does. Yeah, it does have a voice control, and it has built in Alexa, Madame right in the right in the infotainment systems, not apples carplay or Android, Android. Everything. Yeah. So you've got you've got everything covered in Syria, doodle assistant, if you wanted or you have Madame just press the voice button on the steering wheel, and you can use any of your regular Madame commands just like with an echo at home. Well, so is this one of those cars where if you have to ask how much.

"Of energy, and you need to wait a store that energy. And of course in the past. We've started in gasoline, which stores a lot of energy in a very small space. But it turns out batteries can do something similar much larger space and and hydrogen can do something. So the idea is let's find a renewable source of energy that we can make compact enough that we can start and safe enough. So we can store vehicle people often talk about and Taron lies. The rub. Is that compactness? Yeah. Because gasoline as. About thirty three point seven kilowatt hours of energy in it and weighs about six and a half pounds. There you go look at all the same same energy capacity and a battery weighs about six hundred pounds. There you go. There you go. As for safety. I mean, if we've gotten used to it, but a tank of gasoline is not the safest thing in either anything where you've got that much energy. Released potential for it to be released in an uncontrolled, man. It's called physics and he called Sambol summit. He is our car guy. We love them. And I you know, I love this kind of primer on how all this stuff works next week. We'll have a we didn't really get to electric versus electrified. Maybe next week. You talk about that. And the Niro, we'll the port the tech guy. Thanks for joining us. Sam. Appier? Completely did not get to the whole point of this conversation. I'm sorry to slow you down. So just for my benefit. What's the difference? Just electrified refers to anything that has some component of electrical propulsion in it. So so a high resolution everything everything with electrical from from the hybrid to battery electric fuel cell is all electric, it's the super set of all of those but electric means electric dry and no no internal combustion engine at. All right. Okay. So you said the Niro is not electric. It is electric. It is a clip, but they have a regular hybrid a plug in hybrid. And now a battery electric version is the one I'm bringing up on Sunday is a battery electric version. So if you're looking for an electric vehicle don't settle for electrify that may not be electric. It may be. But it depends on where you live what your use cases for some people right hybrid or plug in hybrid is going to be a better solution live in the Nebraska, you're going to want to hybrid, you know, if you live in an apartment where. Maybe you don't have access to plug to plug it in every night. Yeah. And maybe you don't have workplace charging than a hybrid might be a better solution for you. So it all depends on you know, your specific circumstances..
