"And Pamela Hughes I think it was his first live interview colonel Frank Milstead ahead of Arizona GPS director public safety department public safety was in studio with us Bob with a chance to react and answer questions them like returns to his side of the story about being pulled over for doing at least ninety mile an hour at this again according to the sheriff the the deputy pulled over at least ninety not using turn signals and weaving in and out of traffic on the seventeenth all rights we want to get to the facts of the matter someone colonel Frank Milstead sat down I asked him how fast were you going fairly I was something like fifteen over and it was seventy five when we were moving through some slower traffic and there were and I like sped up to get around sore traffic and went back down the speed limit but it doesn't matter I broke the law he stopped me and he was very professional live great deputy it just it was just one of those days that it was my turn to get stopped okay well frankly I think a lot of people listening right now could have found themselves in a similar situation maybe wasn't on the I. seventeen maybe was on the ten had now to California you got somebody camp in the left lane you know you you speed up to pass and so on so forth but I asked them unlike okay will fifteen over you apparently in I thought point in time the the deputy on body camera was seen saying you know you're going at least ninety and I said well isn't over eighty five criminal speeding is going over eighty five consider criminal speeding no it's not no it's twenty one over the posted speed limit is criminal okay so just a misdemeanor it's it's not even a misdemeanor crime is just symbols traffic infraction there's no criminal activity involved it's a civil action I am you know what colonel Milstead actually kind of backtracked on that in our second say because you and I both her eyebrows went up because we thought we thought we had a right but I'm gonna be honest I was what I was going to argue with that is he feels about traffic law I only had half throttle it was a long night it was on me the way it what was asked was was eighty five criminal and yeah I did it so yeah yeah eighty five is criminal and elsewhere in the state of our anywhere in the state or twenty over the posted speed on okay so we've got that cut down also let let's get to you have a lot of people listening right now and we have a lot of folks on our Facebook page and you know tweeting us and so on so forth regarding the fact that they believe the colonel got preferential treatment right airlines that if they were in the similar situation they would have been given a ticket and here's what colonel Frank Milstead responded to with that right now we shoe forty three percent of our stops are written warnings yellow pike county's little different their numbers are quite significant on the warning the last in the last two years they've issued seventeen thousand five hundred and fifty nine warnings and twenty seven hundred two thousand seven hundred speed tickets okay so it's you know seventy percent so our warnings so needless to say and we have this up on on Facebook and I got a lot of people chiming in in and again it runs the gamut of the reactions to colonel mills that all right yeah what do you sing arm Alberto if a normal person speeding they go to jail for criminal speeding or vehicles impounded by the way that's not true but I understand that Alberto believes that that it's still take it all again officers discretion arm I thought this was kind of interesting the flip side of that was I think he deserves some credit as I understand it he was the one that posted the video clip the the the body cam as much as he can be taking ownership for his behavior he didn't have to come on the radio and talk about it so he he's getting some credit from from fall on you know Gerry and fires back immediately going he shouldn't get any credit for it you know this is something he did and he's in charge of making sure the public drive safely and he wasn't doing that you know what I think they're all very valid argue with them and and you can go back and forth on this and when we had a colonel Milstead in here you know we were talking the sick I don't think I'm gonna change anybody's mind I think it's a that off the air but I'm not a problem might have been I guess what I mean like we it's like you know people are gonna believe what they want to believe it and we want to give them a platform to talk directly to folks about it and something else that I've seen on our on social media as well as something that you've brought up and and so you asked colonel said about it as well should should you opt for take it should should you have demanded that because you broke the law and so you will be held accountable for two reasons I I I thought that for two reasons one B. explain it because I don't yeah all it would set a precedent that even though I'm the head of the errors on a GPS he because he wasn't debating what it no one like you got the wrong guy no I I was speeding and I did I made a mistake and yep the wake up call so that sets a precedent but number two he's not putting the sheriff's deputy you an awkward position of this is a guy we don't really write a tick of its head of yours on the GPS and I don't know I got to work in the state so I'm not gonna write a ticket take that off the table I don't know that anybody's ever asked me to write them a ticket and I know that I've never asked anybody to do that but it's really his discretion and even if I just said Hey you got to give me a ticket because I will tell you again I am baffled that fifteen over the posted speed limit add on a guy with complete contrition complete a you're everything that I could possibly do to make this be palatable that it is still an incredible story yeah and and you know we we had that conversation on the air with with colonel Frank Milstead and on the surface I get the why is a speeding ticket news new set of national news like really this is gonna yeah you know fox news and how to optimize okay it's definitely I think a local story for short you know you in and I said this to them I said you are the head of the top traffic enforcement agency in Arizona and your card criminally speeding like that's a story and I appreciate him coming on I appreciate him talking to us about it and we also wanted to acknowledge that there are other media outlets here in the valley who are looking at is driving history I guess that that that's going back yeah I don't have it all back and in in particular I'm referencing an incident that happened back in two thousand eleven so I asked him I said you know when they go digging what are they gonna find in here's what colonel Frank mills that had to say about that in twenty eleven I got ran off eighty seven going up to my cabin was in a rollover collision basically walked away from what should have been a fatal accident and the conspiracy theorists out there are now deciding that there's something weird about that and and I went through all this back in twenty eleven when I was a chief in mesa and there was person working for one of the news outlets and she decided that that there was something nefarious going on and I went through all that so I I don't I and again I can't stop it it's just there's crackpots out there that that think that something I mean is nefarious and it's all been investigate if it's all been gone through but I can't fix that so in response to that Joe Dana from twelve news was listening and can I read you what he tweeted a place in response to that fact very common right there from colonel mills that during his reader interview Milstead road off scrutiny about his two thousand eleven rollover crash as quote conspiracy in actuality the case had gaping holes I'm happy to discuss with Katie after on air and provide context twelve news stands by the reporting of windy Halleran who was the reporter at that time let's do that let's talk to Joe Dana next let's understand a little bit more about this tell a good email Sir coming up right here on Arizona's the station.

"They're with the server so what about over ninety mile an hour even okay that's held saw a starts how how fast were you going Sir and and what's supposed to limit in that area so I with some fairly I was something like fifteen over and it was seventy five and we were moving through some slower traffic and there were and I like sped up to get around sore traffic and went back down the speed limit but it doesn't matter I broke the law he stopped me and he was very professional live great deputy it just it was just one of those days that it was my turn to get stopped it is going over eighty five consider criminal speeding no it's not no it's twenty one over the posted speed limit is criminal okay so just a misdemeanor it's it's not even a misdemeanor crime is just symbols traffic infraction there's no criminal activity involved it's a civil action okay easy you mentioned and I know you you have a statement out about the fact that you got a warning because I think that's what stuck with most people as you got a morning and people believe you got preferential treatment sure but it is not unusual to get warnings right what's the purse there's a percentage trash so right now it it's a GPS we talk about this a lot we talked about it on the air we don't care whether a trooper issued a citation or issues a warning everyone gets a piece of paper so we know who got stopped and why they got stopped and that's DPSS policy and right now we issue forty three percent of our stops are written warnings okay yellow pike county's will different their numbers are quite significant on the warning the last in the last two years they've issued seventeen thousand five hundred and fifty nine warnings and twenty seven hundred two thousand seven hundred speed tickets okay so it's you know seventy percent so are warning so that's what happens I I and I don't disagree Hey in those are numbers in the real key is it normal slash reasonable four eight anyone else out there who's doing ninety on the seventeen to expect a warning look it's the officer's discretion we don't tell them when they have to write everybody that's what they get to do when I will be candid with you I thought that I was getting it to ticket I was actually surprised when he showed up back at the car without a ticket and I've been doing this a long time I work traffic it Fenix PD I was a traffic bureau commander for goodness sakes and I've issued a lot of warnings in most of those have to do with how people comport themselves if they are people down on their luck people who were you know polite compliant and you know sorry because those were really trying to do is change driving behavior and it was a wake up call for myself in Angela in the car it it if we and and again we didn't wasn't like we were just driving at ninety miles an hour for you know for the first hundred miles of the trip we were just driving you know it's three or five over the posted speed limit kind of go along with traffic came up on some slower traffic I worked my way through it and it was and and what really I need to be more patient and that's what it is but again I can't change any of that but when he went back to run me because everyone goes well he must've known to your you gave your credentials and the reason I ended given credentials is that we always identify ourselves as law enforcement all air style what you're told to do absolutely from the time you're in the academy always make sure that your online usual because I think that that's important for people to understand because I'm a woman right you know I don't have a badge I've never had to put on a gun I don't know what that world is like other than what I read in what I talk about so to me when I see that Sir I'm like a little odd no so explain that to people who thought that was odd as well so from the time you start the academy you were told if you're ever stop by a law enforcement officer identify yourselves law enforcement let him know who you are wife both because you could be armed it puts people at ease I also know that there you're not a threat to them if they do see a gun or see something else in the car so we identify with each other and we know who we are and I would tell you that it's not unusual but here's the thing so if you want to jump to the conclusion he actually knew who I was and I even think Angela says he's the colonel yeah I heard that yeah so and like I couldn't hear that from where I was at the time I didn't know it because on the passenger side of the vehicle you're driving right in the cars going by and and I I didn't I didn't know that till I watch the video but he said but it that being said he goes back to the car once you went back the car up and he starts to run me I mean he's checking me for warrants and to see if I'm suspended so I assume he doesn't realize you know what I am who I am yeah and I'm not even sure he gets the whole law enforcement thing and I just assume he's coming back with a ticket he does because it's nice to meet you and you said yes I wish it was under different circumstances I want to back up those second we're talking to colonel Frank Milstead director of the DPS who you're probably seen the body camera footage or read the news here locally that was pulled over on the I. seventeen in October for going ninety and got a warning Frank you had said that you were surprised that the deputy didn't write you a ticket but you were fully anticipating that when he came back up to the passenger side window you would've been given a citation wreck but you weren't right should you ask for one in in retrospect so I heard you talking yeah I heard yeah I heard you guys talking about this yeah well and I and I don't know that anybody's ever asked me to write them a ticket and I know that I've never asked anybody to do that but it's really his discretion and even if I just said Hey you got to give me a ticket because I will tell you again I am baffled that fifteen over the posted speed limit at onyx with complete contrition complete a you're everything that I could possibly do to make this be palatable that it is still an incredible story that is this much record of Frank you could understand that there would be a it I don't think it would be a story quite honestly and I and I realize we're looking in hindsight if you to said deputy understand even though I'm the head of the PS you write me the ticket that you think is a it it wouldn't it wouldn't be the story it is I think and and it's a story because you're you know you're the head of the the traffic enforcement for the state of Arizona that's why it's a story I understand okay and I do chuckle a little bit in the fact that I'm also the guy that brought body cameras to Arizona when I was a chief of police in may so I was the one who brought them for the accountability of people and the safety of the officers I mean we did the work with axon to make these sayings who they are today so again it it's just the perfect storm it's it's on me I I'm not gonna do anything to change anybody's mind at this point even if I had the guy come up today and go he could use write me a ticket today it's still people are gonna be mad about eastern so that at the end of the day it's on me and and we appreciate that what you to stick around because we want to give you an opportunity though to say something to the folks that are still questioning they want to hear from you like on that that feel that they would have gotten that same tree when we're gonna give you the opportunity for that come up on the other side absolutely colonel Frank Milstead ahead of errors on the PS in the studio with us in that conversation continues next on Arizona's the station in the afternoon it's the seventh annual caring for kids collection drive presented by canyon state credit union come out and say hello gonna be a Walgreens out in ten feet and we're gonna.

"Sports genius. Eric resear- is joining me. I do want to let you know. The we are about four minutes away from the very latest on the shooting out of Illinois. And also this swat standoff situation that happened just east of OSU. We will have the very latest on that in about four minutes or so, but boy the buckeyes last night it was it wasn't good. Yeah. Rough night forum. They gotta try to, you know, get over it quick. They've got Michigan state in east Lansing. Michigan state's the eleventh best team in the country. So they've got a tough one Sunday at one o'clock, and it looks like out at the Genesis open. They're gonna get the second round taking care of by the end of the night is what they wanna do the projected cut at one hundred Tiger Woods looks to be playing on into the weekend. So six o'clock when the second round is going to get underway j b Holmes is your new leader at eight under. So Tigers at one j b Holmes is at eight and seven hundred speeds at seven all right? So tiger a few back, but plenty of time to make up ground under cheering for him. Every single time. He tees it up, man. I'm just a big Tiger Woods for the casual golf fan that he's the name for me. You know, I'm twenty eight and the so I I grew up in that era, and I don't know of more dominant athlete that I've ever seen when you had Sunday tiger in red contending in a major tournament. There was nobody more intimidating and more fun to watch and their ratings are through the roof when he is contending as well. I mean, it'll rival anything out there sports history. Gulf. They come out with odds for the next tournaments. Always worse tiger tiger. Because that's where the money goes. And for golf. Yeah. He's there. He's there icon. Did I read that Colin Kaepernick is he is he's lined up to receive a settlement from the National Football League. Yeah. So today the league settled with capper Nick, and Eric read their grievance cases saying that the owners colluded to keep them out of the league, of course, for Eric Reid. He's a safety with the Carolina Panthers right now. But they claim that the thirty two owners got together and said these guys have to stay out based off of their national anthem protests. And I'm reading from this is Mike Freeman from Bleacher report at Mike Freeman NFL on Twitter number NFL. Team officials are speculating to me is the NFL paid capper Nick in the sixty to eighty million dollar range. What sixty to eighty million dollars is his settlement. Even if he's a little high on that. That's what they're paying him. What go way tags? That is pissing me off. Now, Josh, I just was there are people who have won multiple Super Bowls who have not amassed that kind of wealth. This is re you're gone. So looking clown is gonna get that kind of money, believable, man. You know, what he can buy a whole lot of cops are pig socks with that now likely he will never play another down in the NFL. There was the report yesterday that he turned down twenty million to play in the alliance of American football. So I think we've. Colin Kaepernick as far as a quarterback goes do you have a quick update on the the poll? Do you have that in front of you? Earlier today just based off of Ohio states game last night is your confidence. Chris holtman? Shaken in eighty six percent of respondents said no that's an absurd question to ask. But fourteen percent say yes, there are a little shook because of last night's game. And of course that pulls at six ten WTVN news on Twitter. So that's where you can find us if I asked any more absurd questions moving forward from the central Ohio Honda dealers sports desk. Eric Reaser, NewsRadio six ten WTVN. Derek? Thanks. A lot fouls in bucks right now. A grand in your hand one.
