"Right for Tom Brady. But I think that what we're missing when Tom Brady retires goes beyond that. He was a kind of his own unique force. There was a kind of certainty to him when he was on the field. Whereas like, over the course of his career, he became the guy that you wanted with the ball in his hands in any given situation with a lead on third down when you're behind after a turnover in the playoffs in the Super Bowl in overtime, everything. Here's the bottom line. 7 Super Bowl championships. He did it in his 20s. He did it in his 30s. He did it in his 40s. There is no greater winner. He was so unique that he had this ability to not only win games, but almost kind of forced the opponent to lose them. To do these uncharacteristic things. And so I think that when he left, you know, that to me is one of the biggest voids that we're going to miss. We're going to miss that certainty because it's really been there for a long time and it's easy to take for granted. I want to ask you more about what made him so great. But first, I think we have to address the fact that you can throw a rock and hit someone who hates this guy for being such a legend and such an exceptional football player. Tom Brady, you suck booty. You ugly, you suck. You throw like a fat lady with a flabby arm and a little girl butt face. Hashtag Tom Brady hashtag suck. I can't think of another legend in another sport who's as hated as Tom Brady. Can we be real for a moment? Is there really anyone you'd rather see dropped in a vat of rendered bacon fat? And Tom Brady. Why is there so much hate, Seth? Man, this could take up the entire podcast. I think that when he first came into the league and his rise. Going from this 6th rounder who sat on the bench his first year to winning a Super Bowl, his first year as a starter only because the quarterback who started for the New England Patriots almost died. In a collision, he goes on to win three super bowls in his first four years. He's dating Bridget Moynahan, who's, you know, a pretty successful actor. And kind of becomes a sex symbol. That rise was so steep that I think that there was always going to be a backlash. And the backlash really started to happen for him personally in late 2000 6 and him professionally in late 2007. He and Bridget Moynahan broke up, he started dating Gisele Bündchen and then their relationship takes his celebrity into another level. And pretty soon it comes out that Bridget Moynahan is pregnant. And it's their baby. And you know, Brady was everyone's all American, you know, he was the type of guy that would be eating wheaties and maybe even be on the wheaties box. But the fact that he looked like someone who could leave a pregnant ex-girlfriend, even though he didn't know that she was pregnant at the time. I think created some of the backlash. Then first game of the 2007 season, word breaks that the Patriots are being investigated for a legal filming of the opponent's signals. In this sets off the scandal known as spygate. In this report, among other things we learned this originally, spygate was believed to have been 8 games, taped between 2002 1007, but the National Football League's investigation, according to ESPN, was that the Patriots were involved in illegal taping of 40 games. Remember Roger Goodell pretty early as a commissioner punished the Petrie. It's before viewing the evidence. The NFL find Belichick himself half a $1 million. His team, half that. And they'll forfeit some draft picks, and then after the league executives viewed the evidence, the tapes, they actually destroyed them. NFL employees stomped on cassettes of 40 games, literally stomping plastic pieces of cassette on the floor. They then took notes that were accumulated by Bill Belichick's assistant Ernie Adams and they put him in the shredder. The fact that the Patriots had been cheating basically during their entire run, I think added another layer of hatred to Tom Brady because we had become accustomed to any time there was greatness there was something lurking behind it that was kind of dark. We had seen it a little bit with baseball and the steroids era. We see it with NCAA champions. So this was like the football version of that. Right. Then the Patriots kind of just in Brady really embraced just being hated. Bill Belichick and Tom Brady were just more comfortable kind of embracing their inner ruthless asshole. And then later in his career, the hatred of the Brady comes in different forms. It comes with another, you know, cheating violation in which he suspended deflategate. The NFL, of course, still wants Brady to acknowledge that he did play a role in deflategate and then fail to cooperate with the league's investigation by destroying his cell phone. Brady and the Players Association maintained that he did nothing wrong and had no prior knowledge of the scandal. Look, the Patriots, as I reported my book, they were deflating footballs. I don't think that it was this exactly a nefarious thing. I think that a lot of quarterback tamper with the footballs, but either way they were doing it, Brady destroys his phone before he meets with investigators and it was the most comical scandal in sports history. It was the most ridiculous and stupidest thing ever, but yet it lasted and almost went to the Supreme Court. What made it so stupid? I mean, it's air pressure in footballs. Hello. I'm kif O Shannon from duxbury. On January 18th of this year, I followed the New England Patriots into Gillette stadium. I came to access to the locker room and I squeezed all the footballs wicked hard. That is why the balls were deflated. Like, it's great for physicists. The ideal gas law became sort of like this common vernacular among sports fans and I think that it took on this life of its own and it speaks to kind of Brady and the New England Patriots and their power and their singular influence in society and culture that these scandals were able to take on lives of their own. Hi. I'm Chris ludlow. I'm an engineer with me day technology corporation and Medford, Massachusetts. Today, we're going to weigh in on the Patriots deflategate controversy and try to show experimentally how a football could lose pressure based on a change in temperature. And then, finally, you have Brady's foray into the business world. This morning, New England Patriots quarterback, Tom Brady is celebrating his 40th birthday, and we are revealing the cover of his new book. The TB 12 method, how to achieve a lifetime of sustained peak performance, it gives an inside look at how the football star stays in shape. What is TB 12? TB 12 is Tom Brady's lifestyle and wellness business. And it is based on tenants that I think are fundamentally healthy. It's based on a diet that's heavily plant based and highly anti inflammatory. It is based on a strength gaining regimen that's largely substitutes weights for rubber bands. And the key word in there that he loved to talk about is pliability, making your muscles soft, sort of like when you're a baby. So you can withstand punishment, essentially. I love the workout. I love to train. And I love to eat good. You know why I love to eat good 'cause it makes me feel better. Better than I could work out more. If I could work out, why go play soccer with my kids on a Saturday in the backyard and then go play a football game on Sunday. And the book itself was just loaded with all kinds of controversy. Okay, so I understand talk about diet. I understand my producer tells me that you said to him, I hate strawberries. Oh man. Okay. I hate strawberries. You hate strawberries, but you also told New York magazine last year. I have never eaten a strawberry in my life. Yeah. Which is it, Tom, do you hate strawberries? I hate the smell of.

And what all he's doing and what he knows. He's doing even in the scene by club. Bourbon everybody's been in fight club at soi to talk about cycling. Remember what the rule fight club is right. You don't talk about fight club you can tell though that something's going on like if you look at his face in that scene you can tell the these up there the something up and then his son. There was an all discussed this more of a burden this episode but there was a lot of points. Where did y'all feel like some of the storyline didn't make sense With the names they were giving to the to the Like anarchy group like tonight's group. Yeah they started off. I think they started off as Well sons of anarchy knows the baz the jar heads. Well what it was more like. They were naming nate his son. Rich and then son came into in. I just got confused. It who was related to who do and it just supports. This story didn't seem to click to your exact point. I had a question at the Which i know that so we kinda come back to this. They thought they mentioned another gathers started. Maybe i heard wrong because there was some stuff going on not not up. Somebody's kid so that's that's that's the guy mentioned ruts brought is nate's son but i really think i think nate is the guy that a steal from the police which will discuss more in depth but the guy i think nate is his son so i think it's three generations. I think yet. If from what i was trying to understand it i could They said like jacob. I i can't remember. I wish i would have written the name down now. But we'll get into that later i'll bring it back. I'll be short. But in this scene a rush tries to gyp them. He tries to give them Like i think it was ten grand for strategy. Shortchange them yet. Yeah what should thirty grid yet. And an says an an says to amar. I thought we were get the discount to yard. Jack tells him the re the the price on the street right. He's liking for Whatever half this on the street or whatever he's like was last some new on a street boy her. Yeah jess is cool. Jax teller way. Dax is so cool is he's either euro years president of this club and everything but if jackson was the vp or whatever. I wouldn't mind it at all so they sell the guts the go back to well. Didn't we come to the scene of clay and gemma in bed and you immediately in a guy who's ever been in this position immediately knows when they came in something was wrong. There's marital issues. I i it dana's marital issues. That's exactly what it was I clicked claes's the most manly as thing that happened that you don't want to say to us different other in the middle of anything and she it and everything right there. That was instant. He's what did i say how how might fall. Show that shows. Clay gets his whistle wet under regularly. And he doesn't even ask to think you know about a normal relationship. Even they have simone or a semi normal relationship but then goes then it goes from there to the lovely back into the the the house. That's where we find somebody. Somebody's been panties down the toilet pollock. Yeah very as part of that. Scene is when they go back out into the yard and clays apologizing for what had happened and a half set comes up and says can i get the number for the Set in in. Jim says Already field the thanks again. And some of the panthers down the toilet hickey. the panty dropper must've been visiting the alderman each wrestler the pinfall stream sex. God we will call them and maybe may visit to the clubhouse that night. I think it's very well.

"And then, of course, all of the murders that have been happening particularly in Dallas. and so. So it was important to go to those specific areas to see how to bolster the effort. Now I knew I didn't want to go in. Working for this National Organization saying that I had the answers I don't have the answer. y'All have even how the Black Trans Woman I don't have the answer I'm not from New Orleans. I'm not from Louisiana I'm from Georgia, a southern woman, but it's a completely different context and nobody knows better than the per people legal who are actually like resident there. But it was about US having these resources that we could at least build a space for folks that come together to delve and political education. What are these systems of oppression plaguing at 'cause I believe that I believe political education. Okay. But also what are the ways that people are figuring out how to survive and how can we share those ways with each other and then what are the products y'all work in currently the GIACOBBE supporting each other better I am and so out of that space, of course, like house of to love now. A, you know a couple of things went. So making half to love the success that it is right now. But part of it was some of those initial connections happening with like Mariah more and McCall. Milan Nicole, sairy right and also supporting Wendy Cooper another local advocate a new orleans. Legend in your alleged. Yes. Who Was Leading the cans can't stand campaign and so that space in a way. Broad I think more of the the girls and to her orbit. So it was. And also, just ahead, just the chance for for folks break bread with each other to love on each other if the hard conversation that you know when the girl need to have with somebody else you know. In that save space and then go out and do the work ones that weekend summit with over. And so I was so grateful to be able to found and build the initial framework for it with authorities equality. Fellowship. And then be able to really. Gifted and a sense to some of the other powerful black organizers who made the the later iterations, possible Maki Bradford, and Atlanta we away back and of course, Mariah more and Kayla Gore now. So so it lives on at. Teahouse. I think it. Would Their Trans Agenda that I was introduced to? In Creating chains I hear the voice that coming up and they were talking about how you know the work that she was doing world has really led to the you know the shift in culture. In regards to what they will focus on and so I think that's beautiful. I think that we all are doing that culture ticking. And you know I just wanted to highlight that. You started off before that you started off as a rioted and you are writer, but you know that was your. Your Your. Needs. Correct me if I'm wrong into movement work riding, right Well kind of it's a complicated story. So so yeah I, before I winced TLC I was working in the media industry but I was working on things that are completely unrelated in general science graduated from College I. I actually freelance for bed. It was kind of difficult to find because I was black on. Yeah. I had a college degree but I had no connection right now and so I freelance for bed. Move that is really important people people. All over people's air so much. Agree just having all these things we have to have connections with people. When we go out here and we try to make stuff happen if we don't have the connections, we don't have them and they're not going to happen that's part of. Like, you make the make connection. Thought you are looking into this and you have connections and you see Black Trans Women out. You're trying to do the work because I know as an executive director Joe is some things I'm like I happy selection to make this happen. You're asking me why I've been this. Why didn't do that and it's like, I didn't have a connection I I couldn't get the invite. I couldn't get the invites the this this dacians that'll will by only or to do the work that I know is important over year we didn't have the match and so it's really really important. That both the Mexicans are important and if you have them. Help US maker, yeah it's true. You know and I, and so I didn't have professional connections but I also was leaving an environment where. I was the only openly Black Trans Women on campus. I did not know another actions woman. Who with open about her identity? Rarely before. Before I moved to Atlanta. At twenty. Three twenty four. You know. So I also have community connection side and even. Even I didn't even look at the nonprofit world is option until I. Made It. So Atlanta and so. I worked at this small newspaper where I actually would like Staus for like a about a year and a half almost. was out as clear with night outage Tran. And was working on a very small how a conservative town I mean that's like. The our life pre trump. Palin. Hunting they in the back yard. Toss enough hammers to knock a nail into a wooden. Like, that the kind of like college and first job experience I had. and. So when I? Left that space 'cause. I just it felt like this. It also felt like something was getting closer and closer to me way I was going to be ousted like something was going to happen and I also just got really weird message does sometimes one-timer Guy Guy Fan I know your secret don't worry I won't tell anyone but it's like. Okay but why are you telling me how this Mesa you know like it's like that kind of weirdness style that was happening while the Movement for Black Lives was really starring popoff. And I, wrote. I roll the things that I wouldn't right but I had to write them as they didn't implicate me. Especially, the LGBTQ issues saw I mean I can't even say I was a feminist in that space without getting hate mail. So. Yes. That long story short. So that was my first job experience and then. I started working at how stuff works, which was a media company, but it was an Atlanta based than it wasn't. It wasn't really conservative, but the work that they were doing wasn't connected to any of the movement stuff that I was starting to to be more and more interested in and see myself and. and I just remembered there was. The death of Leila alcorn there with the death of another. Another Black Schramm I've black man black seth man at the hands of police don't even remember who because there was so many during that time period and I went to work the each of those days and it was just business as usual and I was like I cannot be in spaces where. This y'all get to operate of doesn't matter. And Yeah and then I started doing more work with. Community Tony Michelle. Williams was leading this entire program at snap cow and so I went in as an entire like while I had my day job out get off and then they'll be an internist APCOA and that kind of. Brought me more fully in some movement was that when our you where you doing when I'm actually An. Anti Right. The we mean. We met at Trans are fit car. Oh no actually maybe yeah. Actually. That was like twenty fifteen years. Yeah. Yeah. Actually. Yeah I it was you and Mickey be out had. We we had. We were. Present time, which was a bodybuilding competition for. Trans men that neo founded in I was part of the organised or organizing that particular year and we had We were doing a show and want the the models didn't show up and you making. Matt and Basically. That's how I met both the out. And I house staying yeah y'all okay. I'm remembering this now. Yeah. I was but I also was the organizer to. Endow. We were some babies that we our house. died in clashes. Like we. Do not. have. Battle. K. and I was like, oh It was like Oh..

"Metro V. R. it's a small independent studio the just released a VR game called or Ryan thirteen when you play a regular PC game you know you're driving them around and you're watching them even in first person it's still on your PC screen and you look around and there's a roommate eating crackers you know when you put on that headset you are completely immersed in a world when you look around and what's behind you and and you can be anywhere I could possibly imagine I could I could put you in that so but but why why is that important to you like is it is it something you just sort of seeking a different sensation it's a quantum leap it's a quantum difference my first experience with virtual reality will happen here in club next stylish modern living room they're gonna let me play the new game and I have no idea what to expect the video games I grew up with sounded like this we've come a long way since baseball stars on Nintendo but really VR has been around for a long time back in the nineteen eighties it was used for flight simulations and military training V. R. as a modern gaming system though acceptable to people like you and me is much newer and it really hasn't caught on yet last year fewer than six million VR headsets were shipped according to Nielsen data compare that to the tens of millions of traditional gaming consoles sold each year twenty twenty is once again being declared to be the odds make or break yeah now people have been saying that since roughly twenty fourteen Robert Morgan heads up a small V. R. studio in London and twenty fourteen that was the year that Facebook got into the game the social media company made a three billion dollar bet on a company that makes VR headsets called oculus as a player okay this is definitely become kind of the the Kleenex of virtual reality in many ways and and have been since the start Facebook has been pouring hundreds of millions of dollars into developing content so people will actually buy the headsets now you can play a popular board game settlers of Catan in VR or fight alongside spider man but that's not good enough for Scott Madeline especially in the beginning my reaction was where's the beef where is the real meat where's the games you know and so I set out to start making the kind of games that I like to play big open World Games or I can move around and I can solve a problem to get around these works I can fight on my can sneak around on my compose on one of the time options because I'm in control of my character my environment and I want to have that same experience in VR and I wasn't getting up before I can play his game I need to start with baby steps Matalon and his colleague Seth man type help me put on the gear first off the slip my hands and the controllers they look like the handles of a ski pole and these are actually used for for tracking we have the sensors here on the track where then the head set which looks like a clunky pair of black goggles and it's gonna go on and your head first we can adjust this to be a little bit tighter and more comfortable is this the oculus headset the oculus rift headset okay the original one wow okay here we go so hello Sir this is clearer or is this suddenly I'm at the eye doctor just try again with the headset on the living room I've been sitting in suddenly disappears a new digital world is all around hello hello I am now on some foreign planet with an alien waving to fans then the scene changes now in hundreds of feet above what looks like the city of Gotham well this I'm at the edge of a very tall building oh my gosh this traffic closing down below oh my god there's a blimp up tonight food I just said I'm sorry I'm so immersed in this world waving my arms around frantically that I'm bumping into things in the real world but they say I'm ready for the main act metal on switches on or Ryan thirteen tie dye and now I'm transported to a robotic neon city above me tall building behind me robots walking around look down and there's my body with the body of the robot that I'm playing for Ryan thirteen okay you can look all the way down if you lean forward like that you can see about legs my gosh we got a whole body yes I do yes you are a female combat robot was become self aware has these memory of class and she's become self aware and she wants to go home she believes his memories are her as crossing souls Sir on the cell phone she wants to to get home and to win the game I have to slash my way through a crowd of those evil robots trying to stop me if you look at if you look you gotta sort in your hands yeah you're right yeah if you swing at the swing around right the faster and longer your arm RKO's the more damage on the harder you hit again I'm frantically swinging my arms and the evil robots are going down ahead there's an elevator and when I go inside it carries me to the top of a very tall building looked down at the as they are and how you can drop down there shop okay yeah there's a lot of moves all right and there's fifty feet we are I'm sweating wow yeah all right I want to know that you did real life so I'm really sweating really what I really soaking wet I have to say taking off the mask in soon club next modern living room again was the most jarring part of this experience British V. R. designer Robert Morgan says that disconnect is part of the reason V. R. has been slow to catch on there's a friction to stepping into virtual reality which really I think we underestimated in many ways how hard that would be so overcome because the fact that they go into their space helmets and I can't see that dog or that PO that family it's a major factor that reduces the appeal all of these types of experiences beyond you know Christmas day or Black Friday when you're first trying these things out I ask Matalon and clinic what they think about that clinic says it's an issue what we've already seen as as companies are experimenting with this is like Google came out with a dream right where they basically had a small head set we you could take your phone and put it in and be in a three in a VR experience they cratered it nobody wanted to take their mobile device and all of a sudden be disconnected from the world around them you are immersed in this isn't a problem for you in the industry do you think I kinda have to disagree with Mike at a at a different level people want more interaction with their content movies have gone longer they've now got the Vader immortal series has been coming out on VR and it just puts you in Star Wars if you're a Star Wars fan that is what you want you want to be there lord of the rings fan and I play lord of the rings online on PC the day it comes out on we are going to buy it because I want to stand on the wall at home depot look out or US ten thousand works in front of me yeah I want more interaction with my content one of the things I wasn't expecting to one asking about before I got here but then after experience that I do what's your take on the role of violence because you are so much more immersed in the experience is it different if it's virtual reality is it more intense and could that be a problem we see violence in TV we see violence in movies we see violence in games there's always some segment of the population that is going to be susceptible to be influenced by it but I think most of us view it as it's it's an entertainment product I'm not running around shooting people out because I watched a movie same time there are a number of VR games that have pushed that gore to a limit that for me I would say crosses a line of just being gratuitous yeah you know heads the heads exploding blood splattering all over the place for movies you watch soft watch science thing for the the person whose plane is physically making the motion of a stabbing or slashing you know you're doing something it's it's it's a spectator sport versus participants support the experience that I had rice still I still can physically feel the game in my body even after some minutes after having played it you know is that something isn't a drawback it because for me I feel a little uncomfortable physically means that something that you have to get over so I think it's an individual thing some people in March more tolerant than others are to it clearly as you saw it does change where you are in the room and space and time and it is a little bit uncomfortable if you do it but what we've seen is that people really are more comfortable over time with it the motion sickness I felt actually lingered for several hours another hurdle to clear is the price a typical VR system could set you back more than a thousand dollars but Madeline is confident that VR is on the cusp of going mainstream if it hasn't already the VR industry is going to succeed because this is like nothing else there is nothing else like this and this is going to become part of our lives and maybe it will last holiday season oculus and another manufacturer called valve sold out of headsets and if twenty twenty is finally the year VR takes off we will be one one step further away from every video game you've ever played before you're listening to here and now more and more people are dying at the hands of an intimate partner with the gun we also know there are people living today with injuries threats associated with it to my partner violence and firearms look at the role guns play in domestic violence in America that's next time on the take away from W. NYC and.
