Pleasure, Sex, and Body Acceptance with Dawn Serra

"Sarah. So. Tell me about your relationship with food growing up. Looking back. It feels much different than when I was in it. I remember for a while food was something that I didn't really have to think about, but there was a point when I was around ten years old I think maybe. Around that age when I noticed that. My body was starting to get compared to my little sisters and I started getting monitored for how much I was eating. And questions like should you really be eating that you're still hungry? I think you've had enough and it just kind of became normal for that monitoring, and I think that was also around the time when I started realizing like if I wanna eat the foods that I'm interested in eating I have to do it when no one can see. Because those were the foods that were policed. You were your police for eating, right? Yeah, and it was also interesting because like my mom is very much a a meat and potatoes, kind of person, her parents were to from the Midwest and and so growing up, we had very few fresh vegetables in the house very few and fruit every once in a while, but it was very like meat and potatoes, and then like convenience foods because both of my parents worked a lot in. So cereals and chips and all that kind of stuff, and it was interesting because there just came a point when I noticed that my sister was allowed to eat whatever she wanted and I wasn't. Yeah, and we're so that came from body comparisons. It sounds like, yeah, and the other message that I got just kind of around the body was that my sister had the same body as my mom, which was they were just naturally, very, very slender and that I had my dad's body, and while the message is about my body weren't specific to me I, did hear lots of stories around how sad and unhappy and unpopular and isolated. My Dad was because he was chunky. And you know in the same breath, it's like you've got your father's body and so that definitely also made an impression of like my sister looks like my mom and I look like my dad and my mom had the super popular lots of friends experience in the seventies, and my dad was like really lonely and hated being chunky. That was the word that they would use and I was like him. God what a message to get. Yes It's like, yeah, I feel like parents don't recognize, and this is one aspect of the fat phobia that's so pervasive in our culture. Right? Is like that sort of message. This is not even questioned. That's not even considered like that message might be harmful to you, right. Yeah exactly, and I didn't really even have words for it until fairly recently, it was just my normal and then when I really started thinking, where did some of these feelings come from and where did some of these stories and wended start? Kind of like Oh remembering the policing and the comments and the and the restriction and all that stuff That's interesting. So you said that was around what age? Like nine, ten years old. Yeah. So right before puberty, right? The sort of tween years. Yep. Exactly. And how did it evolve from there? I have this very. Crystal clear memory of going shopping for clothes for the sixth grade. And so is going to be at a brand new middle school was going to be new with all the graders and I was super excited to go shopping at this really popular clothing store. and. We picked out. It was my both my parents were with me and we picked all these things that I was excited to try on and I got into the fitting room and the size that we had didn't fit. And so I just kind of was like, Hey, I need a bigger size. And what I heard from inside the dressing, room was my dad screaming Jesus, Christ? She's that's that s oh, God and I. Don't think he knows that I heard that. But in that moment, like every part of me, that was excited about getting closed died and you know words like Oh. You're an early developer. You're the first in your class to need a Bra. You know all that kind of stuff and what's really interesting to me is looking back. When I look at pictures of myself. Now, when I was fifth sixth Seventh Eighth Grade I was certainly larger than my classmates, but there was no part of me whatsoever. That was even remotely close to what I would label fat as a distributor. And that makes me sad to think about that that the messages were that I was. Terrible and so much bigger than everybody else. But when I look at the pictures now,

In Michigan, a Genesee County Sheriff supports Flint demonstrators during peaceful march

"Tennessee county sheriff started the night last night with riot gear in a baton as protesters marched near the city of flint by the end of last night sure of course Swanson was walking in the marching band sure of joining us right now very interesting turn of events for you last night sheriff it was historic my brother it was beautiful to see tell me how exactly it happened again I can't imagine that the evening started off with that plan in your mind not at all you know everybody in the world it's saw an eight minute forty second video of honorific police action and we are not that there's great police officers in the entire country around the world that don't subscribe to that in so you felt the tension build then we saw those protests being advertised it started around four thirty five o'clock and that you could feel the tension and I could tell yet you're certainly before eight ishe and they marched towards the the police department and I I I saw the turn of events happened by the second and it was it was highly contentious it was highly volatile and I can only say that died we always rely on our training and experience but I know the people of flint I know the hearts and all those years twenty seven years on the job I knew it was a time when I saw the first fist pump I said these these folks need to be talked to and I simply went to what we call the shot caller the that lead organizer I gave a bagel bear hug and I said bro tell me what you need because that's not who we are and he said tell the people to get their attention and he hollered out and I immediately started talking it down they saw the heart and I explain that these caps on the line don't want any problems and they are human beings and you saw what was what was said and then the final straw the one that I called the historic moment flint Michigan is when I asked what else do you need this a walk with us and we walked in what they wanted was a voice they wanted somebody to understand and they want action they don't want lip service and that was a glorious moment I K. we walk another mile nav back we stayed there to almost midnight there was not a single arrest not a single fire and not a single injury so sheriff do you think this is an example that maybe you can set and others can follow suit and and maybe things can remain peaceful one hundred percent in fact if I might add this is gotten global attention because of all that's happening and I don't know the people's committees but I do know that law enforcement officials from the top need to set the tone so I'm telling all my media friends that have called me from all over the world I am calling for Sunday night to be a night of peace in the law enforcement has to start by laying down their swords having a conversation with the people that are trying to send the message come from behind podiums conference rooms come from behind Intel centers in a walk with them they want to see unity and when you show that when you show that bone ability I can tell you this taking my helmet off and dropping my weapons and walked into the crowd was probably the least tactical movement I could probably do but it wasn't about that the benefits far outweigh the risk they had to have somebody to step up and say I hear what you're saying and I'm with you Serra's Chris Swanson you are most definitely role model during the most difficult

"Company affiliates pricing covered by state law needing to pay the bills Serra so no choice but to keep working everything was fine for awhile then in her seventh month of pregnancy a prison alarm goes off it's an instinctive run and the next thing I know I'm going down immediately felt pain in my lower abdomen zero went to the ER where doctors reassured her thankfully her baby was okay nine weeks later she went into labor and the doctors in there he's he's looking for the heart being he's over here on the left side he says there's no heart beat it didn't occur to me that My Baby was gone when Sierra fell in the prison yard she had a placental abruption her placenta had separated from the uterus her baby mackenzie was delivered stillborn they will in the the baby and she's wrapped in a blanket that's when a friend that had a girl it really is a Hobson's choice that frankly no woman should have to be be faced with a woman who's been told by her physician you have to take the following precautions at work in order to have a healthy pregnancy she presents those to her employer and is told now you either work at full capacity or you go home when you when the Supreme Court weighed in on this issue in two thousand fifteen ruling for Peggy young a pregnant UPS employee who was denied light duty during the last months of her pregnancy but despite that decision two thirds of pregnant women asking for accommodations at work have still lost in court I think that there is some unconscious bias there that because pregnancy is voluntary or chosen condition that in some way it's less deserving there's been some progress twenty seven states have passed laws that require employers to offer pregnant women the same accommodations they would make for workers with a disability but many say what's really needed is a new federal law under the forty one year old law it's a very very challenging for pregnant women to bring a claim and to prevail I had to get the support and relief that they need enter congresswoman Suzanne Bonham ichi a Democrat from Oregon and congresswoman Jaime Herrera Butler a Republican from Washington they are co sponsors of a new bill the pregnant workers fairness act that would make it easier for women to get temporary accommodations during their pregnancies good for the health of the economy as women make up over half the work force right Herrera Butler has had some first hand experience she's had three babies while serving in Congress were asking for a reasonable accommodation which is basically the exact same standard as the Americans with disabilities act I think most people would assume that it is required to say yeah okay you can have an extra bathroom break here or you could you could see right no water here but you get to Kerr your water with you these are reasonable things most people would expect this already is the law I would think and it's not but we hope it is soon but Congress has considered this bill with different sponsors before for the past seven years in October it finally got a hearing but there's still a long road ahead I don't think this is a quality issue this is an equity issue because last I checked men can't get pregnant since our interview zero Google settled with the department of corrections she's also joined a class action lawsuit to try to change the policy on accommodations for pregnant corrections officers in California and she's pregnant again look at this this this hope that this is this is what I'm I'm still fighting for there's a woman that was thinking about getting into law enforcement I would at this point right now I would steer them away from the proper questions because this is not a department for you because they they won't care and if you don't accommodate me if a company the baby stroller surreal gave birth to a healthy baby girl in October she's filed a discrimination complaint with New York city's commission on human rights and is still unemployed if all of us make a voice text can change yeah the other please show German sued her former employer ambulance service rural metro and a judge ruled in favor of the company saying the law does not require an employer to provide special accommodations to its pregnant employees her appeal will be heard this week I know it won't change what's happened to me and now it won't change where my path is going but it needs to be corrected for somebody else right ready after having her son eight in two thousand sixteen Michelle is now working at a pet store she feels her dreams of a medical career are dashed I changed my whole life path with one decision to get pregnant I couldn't have the EMT job and my son is that is is a man have to make now in the car Jim for every you go CBS news "The bills Serra so no choice but to keep working everything was fine for awhile then in her seventh month of pregnancy a prison alarm goes off it's an instinctive run and the next thing I know I'm going down immediately felt pain in my lower abdomen zero went to the ER where doctors reassured her thankfully her baby was okay nine weeks later she went into labor and the doctors in there he's he's looking for the heart being he's over here on the left side he says there's no heart beat it didn't occur to me that My Baby was gone when Sierra fell in the prison yard she had a placental abruption her placenta had separated from the uterus her baby mackenzie was delivered stillborn they will in the the baby and she's wrapped in a pink blanket that's when a friend that had a girl it really is a Hobson's choice that frankly no woman should have to be be faced with a woman who's been told by her physician you have to take the following precautions at work in order to have a healthy pregnancy she presents those to her employer and is told now you either work at full capacity or you go home when he the Supreme Court weighed in on this issue in two thousand fifteen ruling for Peggy young pregnant UPS employee who was denied light duty during the last months of her pregnancy but despite that decision two thirds of pregnant women asking for accommodations at work have still lost in court I think that there is some unconscious bias there that because pregnancy is voluntary or chosen condition that in some way it's less deserving there's been some progress twenty seven states have passed laws that require employers to offer pregnant women the same accommodations they would make for workers with a disability but many say what's really needed is a new federal law under the forty one year old law it's a very very challenging for pregnant women to bring a claim and to prevail I had to get the support and relief that they need enter congresswoman Suzanne Bonham ichi a Democrat from Oregon and congresswoman Jaime Herrera Butler a Republican from Washington they are co sponsors of a new bill the pregnant workers fairness act that would make it easier for women to get temporary accommodations during their pregnancies good for the health of the economy as women make up over half the work force right Herrera Butler has had some first hand experience she's had three babies while serving in Congress were asking for a reasonable accommodation which is basically the exact same standard as the Americans with disabilities act I think most people would assume that it is required to say yeah okay you can have an extra bathroom break here or you could you could right no water here but you get to Kerr your water with you these are reasonable things most people would expect this already is the law I would think and it's not but we hope it is soon but Congress has considered this bill with different sponsors before for the past seven years in October it finally got a hearing but there's still a long road ahead I don't think this is a quality issue this is an equity issue because last I checked men can't get pregnant since our interview zero Google settled with the department of corrections she's also joined a class action lawsuit to try to change the policy on accommodations for pregnant corrections officers in California and she's pregnant again Hey look at this this this hope that this is this is what I am I'm still fighting for there's a woman that was thinking about getting into law enforcement I would at this point right now I would steer them away from the department of corrections because this is not a department for you because they they won't care and if you don't accommodate me if a company the baby stroller surreal gave birth to a healthy baby girl in October she's filed a discrimination complaint with New York city's commission on human rights and is still unemployed if all of us make a voice can change yeah the other please show German sued her former employer ambulance service rural metro and a judge ruled in favor of the company saying the law does not require an employer to provide special accommodations to its pregnant employees her appeal will be heard this week I know it won't change what's happened to me I know it won't change where my path is going but it needs to be corrected for somebody else are ready after having her son eight in two thousand sixteen Michelle is now working at a pet store she feels her dreams of a medical career are dashed.

"Serra merry Christmas merry Christmas so tell me what in the world happened with why do they tell you first I am a millennial and I of corny that why because a lot of a worker they put up with me so yeah there my husband I became debt free a year ago and we did our debt free scream on the air and since then we've done been able to do an incredible amount of giving but one of our favorite stories is we were told by our car mechanic that we would both need to replace tires on her car about a month after we can get free and we use the envelope system we learned about it and as you know we had our car envelope and we are making sure to sort of pilot follows you know money for our tires sure and we got our final bill for the tires with about four hundred dollars less than what we thought it was gonna be wow which was amazing and part of a sign to us that if you plan out your budget you know sometimes somebody will be smiling down on you and they may make it different most of the town yeah good I decided that we would take that extra money and we would help Hey someone they'll ask them can extract so we ask the mechanic someone if you know of anyone who had had an outstanding bill for a long time or anybody he knew.

"The my smart puppy minute this is Serra will and this week we're going to talk about whether or not you should leave your puppy confine when you go out the short answer is yes you need to leave your puppy confine I often hear from people who adore their puppies and feel really badly about leaving them crated or penned in their absence they're worried that the puppy is going to be bored or restless or feel unhappy in that state and the bottom line is yeah they might be a little bored and it might not be what they would want to do but remember what they want to do is to your carpet eat the electrical cord and possibly get her to swallow things that could harm them they are young and they just have not yet developed enough to be left home safely if you can find them in a reasonable and loving way meaning if you leave them crated somebody is going to come back and take them out and interact with them at a regular basis so they're not left so long that they're forced to go to the bathroom in the crate if you leave them panned for long hours you get up a little earlier you spend a little extra time training interacting playing you make it your business to be home in the evening so the puppy has your companionship which is what he needs long isolation during the day is just a part of life for the modern dog and many many dogs adapt to it very well if it's done reasonably and responsibly but for young puppies and I would say these are dogs under a year and if you've got one of the notorious chewing breeds which would be a lot of retrievers and some of the Nordic breeds like Huskies it may be longer than a year your going to let your puppy set the pace when your dog is home alone with you and isn't constantly getting into things picking things up when the house breaking has been good for a couple of months then you will start leaving the puppy loose for short periods of time and he will gradually work up from there but until that point it is your responsibility to create your puppy or confine your puppy safely in a room with a gate or an exercise pen when you leave them alone it is not about your puppy having the most fun ever is about what is safe it's just like a car seat in a car yeah maybe your toddler would rather be crawling back and forth across the backseat but you know it's apparent that that is not a risk that is reasonable and because you love your child you put them in the car seat even when they're kicking and screaming at first because you know what it's not an option and it's exactly the same thing with a puppy you will crate train them or confine them safely because it's not an option all right so I hope that answers the question I also want to do a quick shout out to the people who hate the stage who don't like to confine their dogs this way because I love people who love their dogs and I am confident that when you get through this phase with your puppy your dog's gonna have a great life with you your going to devote yourself to making sure that your puppy and then dog has a wonderful time living with you and that is to be admired this is a short term necessary face to get long term.
