How To Use Your Brand As A Sales Tool

"My guest is laura reese. Laura teaches entrepreneurs and small businesses had a used. Their brand is a powerful sales tool and as a way to accelerate the sales cycle over the past twenty years she's worked as brand strategist happy writer and creative director. Supporting some of the world's most recognizable brands some of the world's smallest companies and lots of organizations in between. Thanks so much for joining me today. Laura thank you diana. I'm so glad to be here. I'm thrilled to have you here. We're gonna be talking about Using your brand is a sales tool. And so i think i'd like to start with asking you to define what a brand as well. I hear a lot of people say no well. We have a logo. So we're good as far as branding. But i think that a brand is about a lot more than that. It's about the total experience that your customers have with you with your business. Lagos definitely part of that because it ideally should represent an reflect that that experience. But it's just a really small piece so at a base level and especially for small businesses. Your brand is going to boil down to two things. The first thing is how your company serves customers. So that's how you solve their problems. How you meet their needs how you help them achieve their dreams goals and then the second thing is how you express that externally. Let me think about a big brands like nike. I love that example. Because they're so ubiquitous and everyone so familiar. What their swoosh and their tagline the way that they really serve customers is they provide shoes in athletic. Wear that's designed to enhance performance on. It gives you confidence to play at a high level. Let's not very sexy to stay right. So even though that's the foundation of what they do the way they express that is by showing you ask needs and by saying. Just do it okay. So let's talk about like the. Are there similarities between like the nike brand and a brand for a small business. Are there differences. The tana's definitely so when you think about a brand for any size of business you're going to have a set of foundational things. That are the same so nike knows. Its customer nike knows. What messages resonate. It knows its personality. It has a set visual and verbal tools that it follows in every execution of its brand same holds true for a small business that these are the same foundational elements that i teach my clients. When we go through my branding framework. you know. It's the same thing to finding your customer knowing your messages knowing your personality in how you execute that the biggest differences that you're going to see is the scale at which you can execute your marketing tactics so nike can. We're lebron jeans and serena williams that you probably don't have that kind budget as business. Great okay so that makes so much sense to me now. Oh shoot. I just had a question totally left my head Oh i know what it was when you were talking about defining your client. I find that companies are reluctant. I will stay that business. Owners are sometimes reluctant to engage in that sort of definition. Because they're afraid they're going to leave people out or leave you know companies out customers out that that they wanna be pretty broad. It's so common. And i think that that fear is real. I faced it myself as i've defined my brand for my own business. You wanna make sure that you can help a lot of different people but what you're really doing when you are talking in generalities is you're saying things that are kind of the noah and no one is going to pay attention to so the more tightly you can zero in on your target customer the more you can know that person to know their their pains. Pablo what it's gonna look like for them. If those problems are solved the more that you were gonna stand out to that person and you know if you think about one target client. It sounds crazy because of course you need more than one client business running but when you create your brand and then the marketing that follows from that if you have one specific person in mind that you are talking to. It's just going to be so much more concrete and so much more real have so much more emotion and passion that is going to be communicated to everyone is going to be so much more effective for you Right 'cause the messaging is so specifically targeted to that audience.

Thirteen Awards Movies to Watch Out for, Oscar Do-Overs, and More From the Mailbag

"Before we get into the mail couple things over the weekend hit in the world of movies. First thing i want to talk to you about is the thing. I spoke to the directors of this documentary series about which is tiger tiger woods. Now you know as a friend of mine and podcast partner that. I am an avid golfer. And a fan of the sport gulf you are not a fan of the sport golf though your partner is and so golf is in your life but not truly of your life. What do you know about tiger woods. And what were you expecting heading into this documentary. Well in addition to being one of the greatest golfers in history isn't in history and certainly one of the best athletes of the twenty first century. That the correct century yes which i do know about because athletes at that level become pop cultural figures and i am interested in pop culture. Even if i'm not interested in my husband lecturing me about what type of iron tiger woods is using which is like a personal hell that i live in on a daily basis so i know a lot about him as a pop culture athlete and then obviously he has a pop cultural significance all of his own because of the events that he went through in the public eye at the end of the last decade and really honest life for the last decade. Yeah and so. I think that this series is an interesting gambit on. Hbo part it's clearly inspired slash based on a book that came out in two thousand eighteen by jeff benedict and armond katayan. And it's an attempt to make sense in real time of probably the most significant american athlete barring lebron james and michael jordan i would say of the last twenty. Five years maybe serena williams in that conversation. I think it's a very short list of people that do for. The tiger is kind of hanging with in the last quarter century and the film is tricky. Because they only aired part one thus far part two is next sunday and so i don't think you can necessarily spoiler film like this but it depends on. What kind of your you are if you're very engaged in the tiger woods story and his life. I don't think that this film necessarily will teach you a lot about the events of his life. There are not a lot of revelations. I think there are some emotional revelations there are some there's some I guess the matic framing that. Maybe you wouldn't necessarily put together if you weren't deeply entrenched in his story the movie especially the first half of the movie takes great pains to portray this father and son story and to show earl woods. Father as the kind of dr frankenstein at and making tiger woods into this kind of frankenstein monster for better and for worse in that he's incredibly powerful but there's like all kinds of emotional danger in his life I one thing that struck me as i re watched part one last night and i watched it with eileen. It's there's a lot of golf highlights in the first half. And there's there's there's not. There's not a lot of scandal there's not a lot of there is some psychology and there is a lot of sort of personal background about how tiger grew up and who he became. But because he has this sort of monochromatic mono-syllabic experience in the world where we just. He very rarely showed himself to us. Basically what you get is like ninety minutes of an extraordinary highlight reel dovetailing with the story of a father and a son and what they mean to each other. And i think if you're a casual observer my my instinct was. Is this going to work for people now. The second half is different. Can of worms. And i don't wanna spoil it for people but did in the first half. Did you find yourself having a hard time entering the story. I did also watch this with my husband. The aforementioned gulf maniac and the soundtrack to watching this was every time golf shot would be show. Its accuracy like you know it was like a little gallery of one. And he was doing it under his breath and then i was kinda. Are you aware that this is happening. And he was like sorry and then he just kept doing it at a lower volume. I have to say when you show golf. As just a highlight reel. Tiger woods is most incredible shots way. More interesting to me personally than the stuff that you guys have on the tv on sunday afternoon which is so boric. My guys pretty. Good a golf so i enjoyed it in that sense i agree with you that maybe it's not that i had a hard time. It and another interesting thing is that i. I do think if you know even a little bit about tiger woods you kind of know about the earl woods character and that is a pretty established part of his pop culture story. It's a big dad. Big character looming. Dad figure familiar sports figure in show bizz figure for sure and Greatness and then the fall. That's kind of what you know. And as as you mentioned there's a fall there there is a part to we won't spoil all of it but if you are watching this documentary you probably have some idea of what's going to happen in part to and the even najah it at the very end of part one which is the very last shot is a very famous woman. Just sidling up to the camera. I that's that's great filmmaking. And i think when the documentary is leaning in to that winning in that side of the story because it it leans into all the aspects of the story but when it goes for that bit of flair and narrative tension is is when it succeeds

Almost saying the world needs it. But i think we're good for now. It really has been a year of celebrity line. Launches hasn't it yes. It's a whole beauty nettle health. Line carmen electra. Into that one. We didn't even talk about her yet. To raji p. Henson has a haircare line. Selena gomez has a makeup line and yet. Does you doing skin to. It's not yet operative word serena williams is into hair care right or no no cisco son care. Spf member eleven. Yeah eleven right lauren. Conrad we had on the show. She is doing makeup end. Skin-care kristen bell she come out with a line or best friend. Kristen who we will fight to the death if you say anything bad about her so i don't have any problem with any of these individuals by any means. Were really well done. I liked a lot of products from a lot of those lines. Yes so we're not you know. I don't wanna hear like wait a second. You guys had these people on the show you promote them. What are you saying. You're talking to both sides your mouth. That's not it it's just. There's a saturation of celebrity. Like beauty. lions right now. I'm not sure how many more we need at like. I'm not sure how. But we definitely don't me. I don't know how many more the world needs. And i'm not really sure what. Us ps unique selling points. There are if we have too many more celebrity cardi right now through zeta-jones with her mar inducing video. Yes with her eyeliner. Like i just. I'm just not really sure how much more we can add to the conversation right now before it becomes like a parody. Do you remember all the fragrance lines came out like the end of the two thousands. It was like every celebrity became drink. Eventually yeah yeah i just. i'm nervous. Were getting to that point. Yeah i i. I agree with you and i think in general i found my job as somebody. Who's a beauty journalist. Who wants to try things and bring you the best. I found it really hard this year. There was just too damn much. Yeah so naughty naughty to the faceless agency i like it or blaming agents. It's true because those people get money out of it to all right Minority was my naughty mask. Ni twenty twenty two biggest off twenty twenty mask asked matthey okay so you guys know what that is that we didn't it didn't even this existed. We have the name. we had hormonal acne. Get this the american academy of dermatology published research papers. An eighty three percent of healthcare workers in china suffered skin problems on their face this year. Because everybody's walking around in a pp's which great a warm moist environments will logged pours. Acne and i'm just going to add onto acne naughty enough. it's not just acne. I was doing some more research on this and basically what the mass does. It just creates an inclusive environment the same way like your pimple patch does when you're healing pit bull that's good in some cases but not when you're using active ingredients so hey guys out there if you don't have mask knee. Heavy notions really read or the sides. Of your mouth cracking. Maybe he's a retinoid. Rita Ora sorry for birthday party that broke lockdown rules

"Now for some breaking news. Was she wary. Where was she seen she posted. Why on instagram. Who clean gone too long pause. What's rita ora up to. Who is this woman. We've never done this before we've never opened with what's read or up switching the order of the show were doing top down instead of bottom up. No we're doing bottom up top down bottom up and as we've said a few times in the past month or so rita's back to normal. You know the world isn't back to normal but reed is back to normal. Were sitting about it and yet now i'm like regret now like we jumped the thrill she was getting. We were thrilled. That she was getting The same number of headlines that she used to get however we didn't want her to get these types of headlines. Oh no this is very bad. So celebrated bad parts. Don't throw your own bad party. It's funny because when. When i saw that she was turning thirty i felt a little pang of leg odds tube-like turning thirty like this time like that's that's more rain could feel bad. Yeah for somebody who loves to party. She loves to party but she something happened here. And she's now in a lotta deep water. She's on the cover of the sun so when she turned thirty. This is what we thought on. Saturday night was at saturday night. That her she posted at thirtieth birthday video that her team made her. Were all these important people in her. Life mcwhirter happy birthday. Big jazz. host of it was just so many people i mean. It's dozens of pete. That's what we thought we were going to be talking about today. That's exactly what o our michael caine star studded video incredible. Here's who's in it. We identified a lot of these people even though it was very difficult and then and then this happened sunday night. We'll saturday night. saturday night. Rada had a birthday party that was like a fake up or they. So i think that a lot of people are doing this and this is not just celebrities. This is normal people. They're showing the world one thing on instagram than they're doing something entirely different offense to graham serena showed me beth so rita showed a thirtieth birthday party that was very small and cute in her apartment in her flat. There were balloons on the ceiling. She watched the video. You could tell there. Were a couple other voices in there. She showed this big spread of desserts and it was like look at this cake. I'm gonna eat it all by myself. Ha ha ha. So it's very like this is how i'm celebrating in these times. But she also had a thirtieth birthday party at a fancy restaurant in notting hill. Yeah and it looks like she just hossack rented the space definitely because there were people bringing in liquor and ice and so it looks like she just rented the space and had over thirty people. And it's apparently against the law to even have like more than one person outside of your household and there are more. Their lockdown laws are more We have some to here. But there's more and they're more will get you your name. They're more like actually taking this seriously but also like they should take rita ora doing this more seriously than anyone because again. She's a public figure. And this shit's going to get photographed. What i'm confused about. And i wonder what you think is like. Did somebody call the paparazzi. Like who how. What's the deal with that like. There were lots of photos or photos of the cops getting there and being like What's going on in here. You know like literally. They had photos of the whole shebang. People going in people going out. Rita going in rena going out and i just wonder like for rita we've already said like. Oh you know. She calls the paparazzi. But like you wouldn't call the paparazzi on your own like a legal birthday when you're doing something like flagrantly illegal but this dead. Maybe not someone whether it was someone at the restaurant a neighbor because it doesn't look like these people they're like they're actually sneaking and they're going back doors like it doesn't look like they wanted anywhere right there and also looks it also looks late as hell like it doesn't look. It doesn't look just like nighttime. It looks like it's late really fucking stupid like i. Not that. I want people to like you know flout these rules or whatever but it just looks. They did it. The stupidest way that i could imagine doing this type of kind of activity Are photos all over the son of like police officer showing up in peering into windows. They're blurry paparazzi time photos of her sister and that guy vast morgan showing up with arm. Loads of prospero tequila articulate brand. Poppy delevingne kara levin. A lot of people. I can't recognize among the thirty so if we have photos of those we have photos of the people people knew you know but there are twenty eight other people who weren't photograph because i guess they weren't important enough to be photographed. Her hat to have photographs. Patty love to identify those people. So according to the loss this is what it says in the guardian england's national lockdown which ends on tuesday which is like ria you could of waited it's against the law to meet more than person you do not live with acceptance specific circumstances. Police have the power to break up gatherings issue fines of up to ten thousand pounds for breaches of regulations so she just voluntarily pay according to the sun this morning. She just voluntarily paid ten thousand pounds. She was like you know what. Here's the money police. Stay away from me. I'm so sorry alone. She's on the cover of the sun with a mask on in a big firm furnish coat that says read a party. Cheater was a really good. That was a really good line in the sun that said bang out of ora. Rita ora slammed she flouts lockdown laws. With thirty thousand. I was like bang out of something. Must be a british slang and it is. It's bang out of order which means someone is like acting a mess acting fool. You're being unreasonable. Your bang out of order posted a apology already on instagram winch. Is you know she said hello. I attended a small gathering with you through the gathering rita. You through the party. It was it was a spur of the moment decision. No it wasn't. It was a party that you through a birthday party made with the misguided view that we were coming out of lockdown. This would be okay. You were but few days later. Sorry i've commentary for all this. I'm deeply sorry raking the rules and intern understand that. This put people at risk. This was a serious inexcusable. Error of judgement given the restrictions. I realize how responsibilities actions and i take full responsibility. I feel particularly embarrassed knowing firsthand. How hard people have worked to combat this terrible illness and being fully aware of the sacrifices that people and businesses have made to help. Keep us all safe. Even though. this won't make it right. I want to sincerely apologize.

Remembering Diego Maradona: football legend dies aged 60

"Argentina has declared three days of national mourning following the death of diego. Maradona very arguably. The greatest footballer of all time at the age of sixty upwards of a million people are expected to pay their respects kosovo's on the presidential palace in buenos aires his monocle. Twenty four obituary away from the outside. But you're legion for dead outside for dead epoch. whatever he did look like. It wasn't a footballer. He was short about five foot. Five and stocky. He seemed as wide as he was told. If you had to guess which field of athletics he would succeed in. It might be weightlifting or wrestling if you met him. This opinion might well be reinforced in no realm. Did he seem at home. The Queen's Gambit (Netflix Mini-Series 2020)

"Still in their top five I remember correctly. Is the queen's gambit. It was number one don't know where it is. Right now. I still think it's the number one show streaming right now on the streamer, but it is about the orphan who becomes A chess Phanom. And she learns chess from the maintenance man downstairs in the orphanage and her life. Just kind of goes from there, and I'm keeping it purposely broad, cause I so want you and I've been I've been guilty of Oversharing and I want to I want you guys to Kind of unfold the show for yourself because that's that's part of the magic of it, because it's so gosh darn good. We talked about it last week. Alexis is back and you watched it a cz. Well, I watched everything. Jeez, I could not stop watching it. And they binged it in four days. Completely just watched the whole thing. It's about what we did. Yeah, I'm with you. Oh, man. It is so good. Now I don't know much about chess. So I think that if you do love chess, you'll even get more in terms of the moves because they really had a really cool way of showing how they do it with the shadows of the ponds and the different You know pieces and then the boards. You know how they do the different moves. And what did the bishop do? And you know all of that, And there's all of these different ways to come at it. You know, different theories and thiss guy does it this way, and he always moves this first and so That was kind of lost on me. But it just It was such a great story and a great reminder that if you want to be the best at what you dio, it takes a lot of hard work a lot of dedication. And also trying around it. Right and remembering the people around. You mean I think about LeBron James and Michael Jordan. Serena Williams. Now, of course, this is in the sports world. Tom Brady, You know, like you are a goat. You really do need to work. You know, they're not out partying and having fun, And that's kind of the same case with the in the Queen's gambit, she Beth. She's just really focused on her goal of being the best chess player. I love that she didn't really focus on her gender, but the media did. And but it's still a hard world to be in when it's all it's all men like, generally older sixties in the fifties and sixties, So you know at the time it's during the Cold War. There's already tensions between the U. S and the Soviet Union already at that time, and then the best chess players come from the Soviet Union. So it was really reflective of the time to mean just in a chess game, So I really like that. I like the full circle aspect of the story toward the end. Again. I don't want to give too much away like you, said Jace. But itjust they answer a lot of questions that you may have as you're watching it and satisfying answers. I see what Yeah, yeah. Don. Where are you? I am just finished Episode four They're going to attack a lot into each episode, though. I mean, even by the end of the first one, you're like, Whoa. This is like a full movie. I just watched her. That's so true, Don. Yeah. In the anime pack a lot in. I mean so much. It's like the opposite of what they did with blind manner, not enough material that they snatched into. Ah, really long boring. Story That was way too many episodes. This is very efficient and I love the writing. You get to know her and what she's all about, Really? Not necessarily through the dialogue, but what they show you. Yes. Great writing, Thie. Other thing. It's the fashion one. Everything she wore. This will be nominated for costume design. Don't you think? Absolutely, without a doubt, the production design and the wardrobe. They're They're co stars. They're they're absolute co stars, and she carries it. She carries it so well, those clothes you know that old saying the the clothes don't wear you. You wear the clothes. She wears those clothes girl. I mean, she capital. W wears out, though, that wardrobe and Well, I just want to be her and Lex. I don't know if you felt this way, said this to dawn last week in the most complimentary way possible. I was sad. I was sad at the conclusion not because of the conclusion, but because I wanted more time with Beth, I interesting. I don't often have that reaction to characters. Um, you know, like Star Wars. I just, You know, I want to hang out with Ray and I want to know what's happening and all that stuff. But I really I'm sad that I'm not going to be invited in her world anymore. Well, that's what I was going to ask you because it does look like maybe a season two is in the works. Really? Yeah. There at least floating the idea around what it could be. Will they bring it back for a second season s wires asking that and It's not renewed. Of course, there's no news about that. But this next season would dive into her love life, her family history, that type of thing. I had the opposite reaction. I feel like this miniseries. It was perfect. In the way that they told it. I don't know if I need to know more. I love I love how it ended, and just That's great. Yeah, I'm not saying I want it because they'll mess it up, right? That's what I'm worried about. Yeah, I It's like big little lives. You know, the first was based on a book and that was near perfect. And then you went back, and you basically forced the author to create another story in a short amount of time. And you know, it wasn't a natural process. You gave the A writer. A hard deadline. I don't think you know. Not all. Not all creatives work well with that s O this. Yeah, but I was Muchas. I'm sad for that desire to him, Not with her. I would rather have that than an unsatisfying Sequel Hard to beat that this is Yeah, because this is just a compliment. I I miss her. I want to know what she's doing, but I'll rely on my imagination for that, and I'm fine. They did such a good job that they made me want, Maura and that Whatmore could you ask for with a creative endeavor? You know Jerry Seinfeld, No one to get off the stage. They're off the stage and I miss her because she's so freaking cool. I want to have with her. I want her to be my friend. And then I want to steal all of her clothes. Be nude. That's not nice. Other things, didn't you guys? Yeah, No kidding. Just gorgeous. Benny Watts. The character who the guy who plays many Watts, Thomas Brody Stang stur. Yeah, He's that kid from love, Actually, Yeah. Grew up guys. He looks exactly the same thing just looks like someone pulled them from his head. Hold his legs and to stretch them a little bit. Was he also in finding Neverland with Johnny Depp? Yes, friend of her selling. Is Perry's cousin, His awful cousin that he lives with. Yeah, deadly Douglas. Yeah, and he's the other person and I just like I said this to dawn. I just like that the old you know, one of the themes that I realized after the fact is really about loneliness, you know, Beth the character and we're talking queen's gambit as we wrap it up here on Netflix. You know, it's a great lesson where sometimes you just see what's right in front of your face. And Beth did that. Beth was guilty of thinking that she was very alone. She was on ly kind of looking within just a few inches of her face. But if she just looked around She just looked a little bit to her left and right. She realized she really wasn't alone. And I think that's a good universal lesson for all of us that sometimes when we do feel very isolated and alone where we really are not, itjust takes Takes a moment to look around. And Beth really was Beth her whole life and, understandably, so she felt alone. But she really never wasn't. She always had people that was rooting for her, but she just never internally felt that way. Andi. I've found that fascinating to examine in that show. So the Queen's gambit everybody on Netflix If you haven't it, it's

Women have been disproportionately impacted by covid-19

"Been disproportionately impacted by the job losses during the pandemic to the point that some are referring to today's recession as a she session. Many of the pressures women already face in the work force, such as the gender pay gap barriers to advance. Men and lack of flexibility have been exacerbated. The crisis could, however, usher and new policy standards and support systems for women across industries and income levels. Here with me to talk about all this is Alexis Crib. Covic, senior partner with McKinsey and co author of Women in the Workplace. 2020 report. Welcome to the program. Alexis Crisco, Vic Chris. Covic. I'm sorry. I'm getting that right. Thank you for having me and we also have in helicopters. Litwin, clinical psychologist and founder of Latinos Think Big a network of professional women and Lumina. Modern psychotherapy practice. Welcome in helicopters. Littwin. Thank you. And Serena Khan, chief executive officer of Women's Foundation of California. Welcome to the program. Serena Con. Thanks so much, and Alexis Krukov itch. I'd like to start with you and some of what the McKinsey Workforce study told us. Why are women facing greater job loss than men? And where are we seeing the biggest impacts? Salute Lee. So the headline here is that we're facing a crossroads in corporate America today, and the reason for that is on one side this pandemic while a humanitarian crisis at its heart has created An opening for flexible work, and that's a good thing because that's the number one thing. Women have said. In the past, they need to advance more in the workplace environment. On the flip side, one in four women today is saying because of the pandemic and the context it's creating in their workplace environment and their home environment. They may need to step back or step out of the workforce. And one and four equates to two million women that would unwind years of progress of women's advancement in the workplace. And it's just something we can't afford to lose. And we're really seeing the gendered nature of work here to right Serena Khan, not only where Caretaking responsibilities end up falling when push comes to shove, but also who falls into this essential worker category and the disproportionate impact on black and brown women's who We're looking at a really layered intersectional issue here. That's exactly right. All of us are being impacted by the pandemic, but we're not all being impacted in the same way. Oh, the gendered impact of the pandemic are particularly profound for especially women of color working moms, gender non conforming folks this pandemic. Highlighting problems that we've needed to work on together to solve three the pandemic, So we know, for example in California. Freak O bed, two thirds of tipped workers, part time workers, minimum wage earners where women and primarily women of color even though California Is the wealthy of state in the nation. It's also has the highest rate of poverty and the people who are living in poverty in California are women of color and their kids. And so when we think about this pandemic, whether It's women who are the essential workers who are making up 80% of our healthcare workforce, or the retail and grocery workers. The essential workers that Are still working or on the flip side. They're the ones that have lost their jobs because the majority of us are working in the restaurant industry. Oh, our other retail industry that have lost significant Numbers of jobs, so it's a very gendered epidemic and Serena Con you've spoken about how there's no going back to normal that that normal wasn't that good to begin with, when it came to gender equity in the workforce. That's right. You know, this pandemic is shining a light on all that was wrong with Our country, our world, our state, and so you know, as hundreds of thousands of women leave the workforce to manage what is really an unmanageable amounts of caretaking remote schooling. You know, our child care costs were making up. Ah, upwards of, you know, 60 70% of the single moms income that's not sustainable and So you know, we have an opportunity here to think about what is the future that we want on. DWI can change some of those systems that we have an opportunity to really Think about care, work into value care and compensate that work fairly as we figure out howto move forward, But the pandemic has really forced us to reckon with how much care we all need, whether we're caring for our Children. For each other for ourselves for our elders on DH so we can build some new solutions for us that the women Foundation California we have believed Since our founding in 1979 that people who are closest to the problems in their communities are also closest to the solutions. And so we have innovative ideas coming out of community. Based leaders about what we can do post pandemics. I think it's important for us now, Tio You know, make sure that people are getting their basic needs met. So you know, one of the other things that we saw very early on in the pandemic is that not everybody was safer at home. That rates of domestic violence were spiking upwards of 40 to 80% and all of California 58 counties. So we and yet so as the need went up the Situation for the shelters was that they had to that They had actually left physical space because of the need to do physical distance event. Soon, though, there's a lot that Yeah, so there's just a lot that we're seeing and that we can think about solving. Yes,

Serena Williams withdraws from French Open with Achilles injury

"I think this was the best day at the French Open so far and the one where I thought about the witness the least. There was a good combination of really excellent matches and drama, and also an an unfortunate story of a big story line which was Serena Williams withdrawing from the tournament which happened moments after the sonic boom. Eerie how how close those two massive events were to each other and it was very hectic hectic time I. Think Actually Serena Williams's withdrawal was announced while we didn't know what the sonic boom walls. So it was it it was very unsettling period of the day that was probably the weirdest period of the day. But after that I would say it was a it was a fairly normal and eventful an interesting day of Grand Slam tennis. Rumors started to circulate pretty pretty much as soon as play had started about Serena Williams Joel and I'm sure would have been. One of these things have been more people and journalists. Onsite M Maybe proper word would have got out early than than it did was the. Circulating and actually pretty soon after that Serena Williams came to press. And told everybody Yep I am I. Parisians alarmed by sonic boom by warplane

"We probably don't have a lot of people listening in Paris, but regardless This is fascinating. So there was just a huge, booming sound, a mysterious boom that came seemingly out of nowhere. Everyone was walking around just being in Paris and then stopped in their tracks. Thought there was some kind of a huge explosion, and now the police have identified it. They confirmed that it was a sonic boom like street fighter style. A fighter jet broke the sound barrier, and that is what caused the huge noise. This is what it sounded like it the French Open. So it sounded like someone like Serena Williams just can't get a job where I was like that's not as impressive as I would have thought A sound a sonic boom would have sounded a little disappointed. Yeah, but I mean, they were probably relief. They were probably miles away from the actual fighter jet, and it still sounded that loud. Can the pilots here? It As well, then that's a great mating, the sonic boom and those sound ways. I would imagine if you did hear that. That would blow out your ear drums anyway.

You can't just be like. Hey, you're gonna Chop your finger off. which my friend actually did like at the end of March and and. He. He like severed his thumb. Slicing and Avocado which is not the I? Do you know that Avocado? Knife injuries or like the number one. Injury that hospitals see in terms of like yes. I know so every time I slice and avocado or remove the pick. A knife into the pit, and then you pull the pet out every time I do that online. A bunch of messages from people being like all. That video gave me so much anxiety sewri. You'RE GONNA cut your PA, and then I was like. Oh, it's okay, you know the the. When it comes to like. I practice law, but I was like. Don't worry about the pit. You can't really win and you got to be so careful. I mean I- sharp knives, really do make all the difference, but like there are certain things that I warn people have all the time. 'CAUSE YOU WANNA. Make like a I I always. You basically looks like you're making a claw on top of most rains when you're cutting like so that you're pulling your fingers in then you're exposing your knuckles. You're not gonNA get your fingertips yet, but sometimes when you're doing something like herbs and your fingers get kind of lost in the Bundle Yup that is very dangerous but I cut myself so much when I was in Congress will, it was very painful like they would. It was very shameful to cut your saw. So I was always like sneaking out. I, first box in the hallway, eating out. And they had these little things that you put on your finger for cuts. They literally I I. We call them finger condoms, but I don't know what they're actually called literally. Roll down your finger. Trump the blood as it comes out. It's disturbing got. It's like yeah. I just slide. One of those might go about my class because I didn't want to get a bad grade. I'm imagining that scene in Julian. Julie and Julia where she's slipping ends. Yeah, and also. People asked me to do that all the time. I can't. And I was like that's not what we learned. That is so funny like I I thought Burns I thought being burned in the kitchen was like a right of passage, and I think I definitely think that it is especially in restaurant kitchens like when you're on the line and stuff, because there's always different things open then it's like those are your war. "Brought me a lot of great joy to see people like eating dairy and carbs. Like. Where did all the flour go for like March? An IRA to? Get it. Everyone was doing their sour dough starter, but I was like. People the same gluten free people we were talking to the last everybody. Everybody bought so many beans at the beginning of warranty, and so there was a lot of there were several weeks where I was just doing be in recipes. Often overlooked protein. I think tru truly, and also can't be are pretty great. No, I, it's one of those things where sure buying beans invoke is cheap, and they're great, and you just have to remember to soak them overnight and like we were talking about how you. It's very difficult to decide what you want. WanNa either advance. To The yes, I live with a bean, had a he. Dan Loves being actually. We had molly Chen on the PODCAST, even like way before this all started and we were talking about how she's like a real beaten person to and since and we were talking about beans in January like before it was cool also. We were really in March whenever. We were right we were we were early. Adopters Beedon Life but I will say that there's always beans soaking. Somewhere in my house at any at any time and always have always have been, but the beans and I will say about the canned means is like your shirt geared tupperware take. With Dan. You don't have to picture it I'll send you a picture of that actually happening. Is Truly goes in my house. Something's always being pickled or something's always being said but I. The thing that canned beans is again level of ability. Yes, for me. The soaking feels I need to reduce the amount of opportunities. I have to fuck off something so opening a can of beans feels like I'm skipping like eight different steps that I will probably get wrong. And so I'm I'm very. Thrilled pleased. A. Relieved to hear that you think you and actual shafting things can be are okay. So funny to me when people are always so nervous to tell me about a short cut, they took or I always find it deeply hilarious. When I go to like close friends, houses nearly come so nervous if you. I'm like I have to not be cooking I. Understand why people not just in pandemic times always I. Don't I cracks me up that people think that I'm going to judge them more harshly. I'm just like this is thrilling, and occasionally people will make my recipes. You know the way. We, that's really exciting like you. Have you gone to like friends houses? Where someone's like I'm serving you? You're on food. And it's like people I got. A hilariously narcissistic things I. Love what you think maybe. No but I think what makes me happy especially if they're really proud of it is. That's why I liked to create. Recipes is like I love when people are. Proud of something they've made especially people who are not super comfortable in the kitchen. Yeah, when they're able to pull something off that the that is the lesson that they feel is impressive, and sometimes it's just my friends will send me pictures of. Recipes the. That they've made for their family or That at like on Thanksgiving one of my best friends every year. I make her aside recipe every year for Thanksgiving, and she makes it and it's really funny because she'll be honestly, people didn't love it as much as last year is set. "They asked if they stepped into Charlotte, of course she would, you know? So for the the French Open to say that her uniform was disrespectful. And they need to change it. You know, it does feel like a slap in the face 'cause I can't again, I know people watch it. 'cause it's iconic. I bet you. They felt insulted the whole time. You know like she how dare she, her sister always been outside of this to this very white, very elitist sport of tennis, you know, and they always let people know they still black. Yeah, always always in the, I think the thing that first-rate mean about Venus and Serena, like like them, right. Both of them girls. Is well, we'll women, but, but you know, since they've been girls for me is that I am. I, I love Serena Williams in Maine is like I love Tiger Woods only watch when they playing day plan. I ain't watching and there's just that simple to me. Yeah, but you know what, though and is not. Got out of the way I'm in the same category because Tigers a fucking cone. Yes. The is like has never say anything. I just want to say beyond even what you think and I hate to cut you out beyond even what you're saying, Serena's even higher on the level. Yes, she is. She is. But but but I said that for the fact that I know that I am not the only one that tunes into tennis when she's there, right? Your writings are higher because she's there. Then I tiger booze say with the puck, you won't say Tagliabue's is kind of winning again. So against what you motherfucking ratings went up. So in this small, so funny is that. Kind of like Tiger Woods Venus standards for women. Women get paid more to had to show her ass when she came back and was like, look bitch when people have kids and maternity leave, you can strip. They rake in like a lot of these white women who probably spitting her goddamn face. She has passed Lau to benefit them. She got everybody pay more. She gets more revenue share like she got the win more revenue share the the women's tournament get sold out before the men's tournament. At the biggest finals. You know, she's doing all this shit for a game that actually bet they don't want her there and that constantly told her that you test Tom on anybody else. You got this other bitch over here that was not insured, putt knows and doing everything she could to be her got suspended. You know, but you don't. You don't give her the vis and you didn't test terrorists much. You want and showing them on my God damn house talking about pay bit. Like for me, personally, you have got to be a special person. I vein is a Serena us special like it's almost like they were designed to deal with the racism. They were design to deal with the with with with the being called niggers. Would you go to tournament like you got to be a special parson because of told him to kiss my ass a long fucking time ago because the whole time she's been there breaking records doing all this miraculously shit. They have done nothing but disrespected her the entire time. Right? And so like like I said, I would put her even ahead of tiger. 'cause agree. You like tiger does a lot to be like, but not to black all calm down, right? Like just Weck enough, whereas conduct when not really. Okay. Guys, calm down. It's the Raina does. I mean Tigers say. Said, people need to respect Trump like two days ago. Serena would never ever would never, you know, Venus is more lay back, but Serena, I mean, in addition to, you know, like Venus definitely has some health issues and shit like that. But Serena, we all knew she was younger. And what's the past Venus at some point? And she became so dominant and so good and she still so black and so committed to our her people and everything she does is like fucking like iconic. It. You know less. I'm stepping into motherhood, like like with my fucking foot on mother who's right. Like just vicious motherhood. I'm gonna tackle this shit, you know, but being transparent and honest and vulnerable and able to talk about like complications with her pregnancy postpartum depression. You know, she's changing what it means to be the most dominant athlete in error, where we've normally seen a dominant athlete as the impervious, right?.

"You bill to god can still close in big situations he's twelve as no blown saves this year he just needs to get his temperament under control the dodgers did the same thing the couple of years ago sent him to the minors in the middle of the season to get his his emotions under control he came back great this'll be great woody wrong he's he will close games for the astros in september i guarantee it all right put down for that as i'm sure tim conway show news texas rangers who has reached base safely in a franchise record forty eighth straight games played evan grant of the dallas morning news questions jeff benaissa's moved to sit two to three games against the red sox weak and wonders whether ban if there was protecting this free in not pensioning shoe against craig kimbrel last night in the eighth and ninth bannister denied any malfeasance saying we are in the to win games tim you buying or selling benefit here why can't we just leave the rangers alone what did they ever call just put them away they don't need to be here yes embarrassing last night they're protecting on base streak most teams can't even tell you they're all time on base streak leader is tha that ryan rua instead him in the ninth that was just crazy which is why i'm selling this is he gonna tell his grandkids and twenty years old remember when i was in the bigs x amount of time i was on base for thirty i'd games that nobody cares about this is low on this on this on the totem pole of streaks in general never mind what it should be for the seems bad you do he's thirty three this year with the bases loaded any sits on the bench with the bases loaded gun come off as a pinch hitter that's absurd it what the the thing about this chew wants to do this he's ready to play he was ready during the game he said so it makes him look bad it's not fair to him the organization needs to think better than our woody left work totally disagree with you guys this is a meaningful strict to the rangers into the rest of us imagine when it gets to fifty six that's a very magical number in baseball but but that's talk not going to be on that level very timid you know he's the lone ranger this year you've got to protect that's a long way for to joke woody how how do the man dominated show the way you get yesterday and torpedo his chances to pudding later bre clinton come in my feelings the minute go.

"I love you solutions oriented i like none of bill solutions but i love you being solution oriented go ahead yeah yes pf can't wait to promote the fielding skills challenge the night before the all star game hey buki for that you guys you know here's the thing i don't want to give her the homerun derby i'd just like to field how with all the american league power hitters is the entire american league represented by alex bregman that is it you know it's seventy gets one who came up with that but what two guys they needed on this show shohei otani to be distinct that would have been exciting but as far as all the other field is concerned they're actually interesting ballplayers reese hopkins worth a double ear flap on his helmet for goodness sakes and you buy is one of the most exciting players all the baseball if you had a feeling competition he'd be in that one too if we're not there for the home runs anyway you get to learn about some fun ballplayers it should be a good one all right remember that crazy speaking alex bregman walk off from tuesday we talked about in yesterday's show that moment only existed because kim giles a free run lead in the night jobs also to blow a gasket at aj hinch as he left the mount now to after it was close has been demoted to triple eight with pinch calling it a baseball decision he said he's not right instead of dolls and his four nine nine ray we need to get him right mentally and physically to make sure he's a contributor to our paid i'd say he's not right but man himself in the face back in may what he fire sale the demotion and it helping giles yeah and emotionally physically mentally emotionally he's got to get back you're right he had a tipper mental fit earlier new year and then against your manager i think it was both because of what he's doing on the mound and what are you doing to help his teammates kenny get back he had a meltdown in the world series last year was taken out of that role and it's really carried over to this year i don't think he's going to come back this year and the way he was so yeah i can't tell it's only been right for part of the time he's been in houston some of last season but is what he said he fell apart in the playoffs the astros are getting by without truth closer they just throw out different guys to finish games the rest of the team's great but they need to get rid of giles for a while andy showed up his manager it was bad it was on camera it was obvious body language wise there's a reason my cover their mouths with their gloves when they talk on the field is that you can't actually see what they're saying it was obviously made look that are what about.

"Go back and forth with buckets that and we thought garter account was a bad look now look i've had many a dumb twitter back and forth but usually when i find out that i've been beat teenager i love golf and hope that nobody noticed him why can't katie lift stuff like this go why did a seventeen year old saying he can't elevate team lebron steph strikes such a nerve katie it's just incredible how this stuff bothers them and you're right michael some of his took a few years to learn the proper response at twitter fights a quick sarcastic comment followed by the mute button and that person no longer exists it's all you have to do and kevin durant hasn't learned this and this is after back to back finals mvp's he's still has to convince the world of his value and it just makes no sense at all clinton that that advice advice from tom kelly star tim keller show but overall as somebody that is the charter member of the never at me allies i'm here for petty twitter beef at all time as you might like to say michael he had time that day right so if you come into his mention is going to let you know i have no problem with katie doing this this is part of the entertainment product of the nba and i love it i'm fine with the with the slot in the comments that was fun at your to put the kid in check bill plaski but to go incident deums and go back and forth you toots radio and finally than ep two kid seventeen years oh it's all about it's all about the names you mentioned the instagram it's all about lebron james and steph curry those are considered this shadowing they have shadowed durant his whole career he thinks about that he it's like it's like mentioned in woody page the tim keller show and he can't get over it would be for yourself well i i enjoy getting into a teenagers they should be putting their place he's having fun he'll the answer to this invasive longer so he doesn't have the kind of time that he had but he's just enjoying himself what's wrong with that i get i get that he's just being a regular guy i just wonder i wonder if longterm maybe after this next season these sensitivities paranoia and in front of flu something or get delegation million to make some kind of moves kinda major move still searching for something that even with some finals indie peas championships he's still has gotten to go to i don't know i gotta go michael at least for the next few we we'll see y'all.

"I think that's the most critical aspect here he's got a window three or four years and i think that there's nobody better equipped to do that then magic johnson to do what john elway did it dimmer is to get him that one final championship or at least a chance if one final championship semi vying with bill is selling lebron heff so when championship in order to be considered truly over i think i think he does because he's lebron i think your question michael was great that they were begging people to take the money and let's say the paul george taken the money and lebron hadn't come there if paul georgia's got him into the playoffs i made the team interesting that would probably be enough for him but this lebron james this is nine nine trips to the finals there's an ex they're sick of the warriors like a lot of people and they feel like this is what lebron does now he hasn't done it in the west and this is going to be his toughest task certainly with that roster there but i think for this to really be successful move on his part he's gotta win one when there's a couple of things here somebody that is very close to the street art community i find this a horrid on a lot of levels at an artist paint over their own work to save their own dignity that pains me on a basic level as for lakers fans i gotta say i kind of understand this for two reasons here's the main reason lebron puss koby out of not just the greatest laker discussion in terms of all this other stuff but the greatest of all time discussion that a lot of people thought kobe was in with jordan on on some level until the brand came along it started dominating thing so there's a two prong realization as far as a lot of fans basketball fans in a layer concern so i get the concern but if you're the type of person that's going to desecrate art is what he put it your just a jerk that has nothing to do with basketball and is foul though back to you michael part of the issue is one of the broad came in her he's already picked the team put a bunch of oddballs around him he's going to probably coach through the pressure on him but woody i gotta ask you you can't tell me it peyton manning did not wanna championship he wouldn't be considered anything other than a nice little toy they had for a couple of years they're a car you know a real hall of fame corporate bagger so to speak you cannot tell me that he didn't have to win to be considered a bronco support i making i think i totally agree with you here that that that they worked very hard if he'd had just gotten into playoffs that set those records career records that he wouldn't be recognized here or throughout the nfl but he was able to do it twice with two with two different teams he wants super bowls lebron's already done it with two teams if he can do it with a third team nobody would've ever the greatness lebron got nothing to prove to anybody is legacy is already secure i'm just saying you can't go from begging people to choose you to say yes and then when you do see okay now you gotta prove that you deserve us year we we'll give you a year bill where was your invitation to the dinner last night pacino dicaprio you know what happened i got one question of this is easy dining with but you don't get the capital how's he gonna died wednesday go down with luke walton was he have dinner with walter that's what i wanna know let's keep it moving speaking to be better than this playboy as one thing that clapback at an established writer or tv fucking here but a seventeen year old on instagram i katie jumped into comments section and burns the kid with google sleepy dole room and don't you don't know who but instead of leaving it there he takes him to.

"An incredible effort for me as motivation for the rest of my career we often measure greatness in terms of titles and turn the tennis major titles with this run to the final regardless of what happened saturday is one of those things will remember serena four and should be added when it comes to conversations about her legacy absolute art outta soon kobe stands grilled with the brawny eight or at least put an icebox for the next four years just goes to show some people penny knows no bound so artists jonas never opted to to cover his mural on a wall fabian blue barbecue restaurant in venice with white paint wins the after this clown wit and flattered it with yellow paint really do not afford that some joker repainted we don't want you know king and three and six over them you'll never say that the mule receive a lot of positive feedback but hopeful signs a pro koby antilock rahm responses josh aren't tweeted this is sad and disrespectful la we are better than this are are you you but i sit in with us and not pay with a broad build the vast majority in la does seem excited about lebron's arrival but can lakers fans koby loyalists in particular ever truly come to love lebron on that level we as mike we are a lot better than this this was senseless and it was a horrible thing to happen to a beautiful beautiful mural but the key was in the artist has set himself was the word of the king of la that's what apparently the vandals took offence to and that is where lebron stands in his image in la right now is people will not they're so worried about colby bryant legacy out here the pm dean for many for this current generation the king of la that won't accept lebron he'll have to win a championship every great laker icon except for elgin baylor won a championship in eljay retired in the middle of a championship your and got championship bring so every laker icon has a ring on his finger that he won with the lakers with brian is going to have to win at least one championship to ever be fully accepted here and this senseless horrible thing that they did this is an indication of that before we get to what i'm not sure that's fair bill let me redirect back to you for a second i don't know this fair y'all went from begging people just accept you free agent money to make you relevant again haven't been in a playoffs in five years let alone a championship and you telling me lebron has to win a title there in order to be an agenda he has he has one year to get stuff to go yeah now they're gonna give one year and then they have another free agent opening next year for choir leonard or klay thompson someone like that that's what it's got to happen no fans here fancier will be happy for year you gotta win here to be i here you've got to win the title that's just the way it is welcome to welcome to pressure lebron this is your life what it what do you say well la's hard town we know that but those those buffoons who actually paid it over the euro that's desecrating art and that makes no sense whatsoever and they should be criminalized as a result of it in regard to lebron and his legacy he's already created a legacy i think winning titles in going dates straight finals i mean la saying oh yeah you got win voice right away well it's quite possible but i saw similar situation in peyton manning when he came to denver and actually they worked very hard john elway specifically to get him one more championship so.

"Face angelique kerber in saturday's final rematch twenty six final the mother of all twenty fifty williams said quote is crazy i don't even know how to feel i literally didn't expect to do this well in my foot tournament back in sixteen months i just feel like when i don't have anything to lose i could just play so three that kind of what i'm doing close quote clinton start off our free cease into queens three thirty six a new mom and a win away from eight wimbledon's and a record tying twenty fourth major title all right have to press this was one point serena williams is my favorite athlete of all time over there to understand that so when you get into the discussion of the greatest or not there's that but i wanna make something clear here within deb to me the most about this is the fact that she came back from that injury in the french to maintain focus on a tennis level a lot of people wanna get caught up in oshii had a baby and she's coming back women have babies and come back and do things all the time that's how history works and why we have continued to save human beings so while this is obviously large accomplishment in terms of getting through that part from tennis standpoint something i think we forget a lot about serena she has moved back to her form which is the reason why the wpa and the tour is decided to change these rules which is if you're gone for pregnancy you should not be penalized for that in the rankings i really do applaud that way she's been able to stay on top of her and get back to this final just putting a little asterisk next to clinton's disclaimer about people have babies all the time and do things she did have a difficult pregnancy she is in her mid thirties and she's way past the age most women in tennis have any kind of success serena piles up these stats there like roger federer's every time you see us that you can't believe this one's true her latest she's now won twenty straight matches at wimbledon she's had a twenty win streak before it was fourteen years ago it was from two thousand and two to two thousand four here she is doing it again this would be i think her greatest championship ever if she pulls it off saturday woodrow well just to have instead they're to those great that she's one ten semi finals in a row and they only want shiver lost was to a lady named venus i appear into semi finals but just an aside i thought it was fantastic when when the tournament started she missed her daughter alexis olympia for steps and it really bothered her but she's got her with her head around on the grass courts earlier this week and i think that's fantastic that our daughter that she missed that time for is going to actually see her mother possibly win wimbledon for the first time won't that'd be fantastic but she's just said all these records over the years she is by far the best women's player of all time the best tennis player of all time and very possibly the best athlete men's or women of all time all right what an incredible accomplishment bill would he not very possibly she wins his thing in my mind she will be the greatest athlete male or female evren clinton you're right it's been done before she would be the fourth woman to win a major four fourth mom to win a major the us open air but goodness ten months ago she gave birth ten months ago she nearly died she had two operations after giving birth she was ranked at one hundred eighty i you had to fight back from the twenty fifth this is unbelievable this is unconscionable what she's doing here i don't think there's any way you can put any kind of asterix on it or anything and she would a great standard set for a great example of working moms everywhere again i love the fact that this is a working mom getting credit for all this and i i can't even greater athlete a graphic achievement what she's doing now i just want to say quickly that serena's complications during pregnancy and childbirth there's something that affect women of color in this country a lot more than they do a lot of other places in that highlighted that so that is a great point i love you say whatever happens is just.
