Facebook, Twitter CEOs Testify Before Congress
"And social media treatment of election issues, was also back in the spotlight on Capitol Hill this week was Twitter being a publisher when it's censored The New York Post. The answer from Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey to Texas Republican Senator Ted Cruz was know that it wasn't censorship. Because they have clear policies and what's allowed and users agree to follow them. But he also agreed the platforms handling of 100 Biden story was a mistake. Democrats say not enough is being done to stop misinformation. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg was asked if he would commit to removing Steve Bannon's account after the former White House strategist posted that he'd like to see the heads of Dr Fauci and the FBI chief put on Pike's having a constant violation does not automatically mean you're content. Your account it's taken down in the number of strikes varies depending on the amount the type of a fence Some in Congress are considering a change to strip the shield. Social media companies have from legal liability over what's posted right now,
No, social media isn't biased against conservatives
"Yesterday the CEO's of Google facebook and twitter testify before the Senate and a hearing that was supposed to be about a fundamentally important Internet law called section two thirty. It's about liability protection for tech companies. Instead, the hearing ended up being about how much power big tech companies hold and how they wheeled it. Republicans accused social media platforms of Anti Conservative bias Democrats said, platforms aren't doing enough to curb the spread of disinformation. It went about like this Mr Gordon. Who the hell elected you and put you in charge of what the media are allowed to report and what the American people are allowed to hear issue is not that the company's before today are taking too many posts. Now issue is that the leaving too many dangerous post up. That was senators, Ted Cruz, and Ed. Markey and we now have none other than marketplace tax molly would here to talk about this and I asked her. Is it true that tech platforms have an anti conservative bias? There is no evidence to show that platforms have an anti conservative bias, and in fact, there is research as of this very week that says that facebook actually. Promotes right wing content to the point that it is its own sort of right wing echo chamber, and in fact, Kevin Roose at the new. York Times set up basically an automated system that every single day posts the top performing links on US facebook pages in the last twenty, four hours and every single day. The vast majority in fact are from right wing new sources. It does though stem from argument that I've heard not just from the right. But also from the left that these companies do wield a lot of power, they can take whatever they want down and that people want to know why you know when it happens that they should be more transparent with their their moderation policies and processes. How much common ground is there on that I mean, that is absolutely true. These companies should be more transparent about how their processes work and unfortunately because they have not been over and over and over it's basically open the door to the kind of frankly posturing and performance that you see every time these two use appear before Congress and it's only gotten worse I think that that would be. In some ways, a fairly easy fix. These are our rules they are enforced consistently and with regularity, and that would end a lot of these arguments but unfortunately, the platform so far have not done that now in the actual last days before a presidential election, they're kind of scrambling in front of all of us real time to figure out solutions and it's obviously not working. No one's happy with it. One of the other issues we heard about brought up mostly by Democrats was about disinformation specifically about how much responsibility tech platforms have to take it down. What did we learn once again, we didn't learn much from. All of the shouting but I think what we're learning is that increasingly this conversation which a lot of people believe is about section two thirty and this liability shield of the tech platforms have related to what their users post is not actually what this is about. It's about disinformation and so far we've seen proposals from the GOP to alter the way that section two thirty works that would arguably punish platforms for not allowing disinformation to spread. and. Then on the other side of the equation, you have certainly Democrats but also researchers, academics, journalists saying these companies have allowed disinformation to spread to a dangerous degree and they need to do more to stop it on both the advertising side and the content side. Here's the thing that is a little bit tricky to discuss a lot of the time when conservatives in Congress say that conservative content is being censored. The content that they're referring to is disinformation. They give you know frequently the example of the commentators diamond silk who have had their content taken down because it promoted misinformation around the corona virus as one example, and so we find ourselves in this tricky position where increasingly there are there people in the GOP who are embracing? Cunanan, in back just this week, Stephen Miller the White House political adviser reportedly told journalists that Abidin administration would enable widespread sex trafficking of children that is a Q. and non talking point is conspiracy theory that has spread on the Internet and so because we're in this moment where we're right before the election where disinformation has played a huge role in the two thousand sixteen election and in elections since it is really impossible to separate the politics. From the conversation around speech particularly when so many of these talking points are impact themselves misinformation or did. Researchers. Just re re released evidence that president trump himself is the single largest source of misinformation around covid nineteen in the coronavirus, and that makes us a tricky conversation to have because it feels partisan. But if you agree that truth is truth and certain things are true in certain things aren't then it is sort of a nation that has to be had.

"Fine. If you actually believe the stuff now judge Barrett's credentials are straordinaria she graduated first in her class from Notre Dame law school she was a law clerk to Justice Antonin. Scalia one of the greatest justices ever to have lived on the court. She spent twenty years as a professor at Notre. Dame. One of the most respected federal appellate judges in the country. But I still remember well in the Senate Judiciary Committee. The confirmation hearing for her to become a federal appellate judge where we saw Democrat after Democrat target her. For her face Dick Durbin asked her if she was a quote Orthodox Catholic which I'm not quite sure what that's supposed to mean I guess as opposed to a heretic orthodox an odd modifier there but clearly, it was bad and the moment that really characterize the entire hearing was Senator Dianne Feinstein who said about judge Barrett's faith said the dogma lives loudly in this one. And Dogma was meant to be I. Think a code word if you actually believe your face. then. You're not fit to serve in public office or as a judge whether one is a Catholic or evangelical or perhaps and Orthodox Jew but whatever your faith. The view of today's Democrats is that is a disqualifier. I think we saw real religious bigotry and bias in judge. Barrett's first confirmation hearing and sadly I expect we will see more of that. In her second hearing. And I would note. The text of the Constitution. Explicitly prohibits a religious test for public office. So the framers of the constitution anticipated that you could have this kind of religious bigotry and they wrote into the constitution you can't have a religious test for whether someone should serve. They were right then and there right now you may have been there the day that. Camera. Harris actually ask a nominee to be a federal judge about his membership in the Knights of Columbus, which is a very large Catholic benevolent parody, and then she was sort of implying that by definition if you belong to the Knights of Columbus, you couldn't be acceptable is a federal judge. And it was remarkable. I do remember that well, and you're right that there were several Senate Democrats who took the position that if you had been involved in the knights of Columbus that was a disqualifying aspect, you think back to. JFK The Democratic Party there used to be people of faith that were welcomed that were embraced. There were pro life Democrats. There were Democrats who believed in strong national defense and what we're called Scoop Jackson Democrats. This is not your father's Democratic Party today's Democratic Party. Anyone who is conservative or moderate or anything other than far left is driven out. We're seeing them primary ing from the Socialists and radical left. Anyone who doesn't agree with them the head of the DNC the Democratic National Committee said, there is no place for anyone pro-life in the Democratic Party and I can imagine an awful lot of folks particularly up and down the Mid West Observant Catholics. who were John F. Kennedy Democrats who are being told get the hell out. Of Our party, I can tell you on the Republican side. We certainly welcome them with open arms and I. Think you're seeing a lot of people who had been FDR Democrats and JFK Democrats who are becoming Republicans because the Democratic Party has been so radicalized on so many issues. Ask You the big questions very, and right now, there's been a great deal of. I think mischaracterization. Of whether or not you can nominate and confirm a justice in an election year I know you're an expert mission you've studied. Could you just comment from about the whole history of? People being nominated to the Supreme Court and what made two thousand, sixteen different in two, thousand, and twenty. But in the context of actual precedent. I'm happy to and they're very different circumstances. First of all the question of what to do with a Supreme Court vacancy during a presidential election year. Is Not a new question. It turns out that it's come up frequently in the history of our country has come up a total of twenty nine times. So twenty nine times presidents have had vacancies during presidential election years on the Supreme, court And we know what presidents do presidents have nominated someone to fill that vacancy all twenty, nine times one, hundred percent of the time. So whether one is Democrat or Republican. It is absolutely clear that presidents when faced with a vacancy in a presidential election year put forth the nominee. Now what is the Senate do with it and again here the history and precedent is clear. Nineteen of those times the president and the Senate have been of the same party. Of those nineteen the Senate has confirmed seventeen of those justice. So. The precedent is if the president and senator of the same party. The nominee is confirmed. Assuming. They're qualified. On the other hand ten of those instances, the president and the Senate have been of a different party that happened in two thousand sixteen when Barack Obama nominated Merrick Garland and the Senate was in Republican control. Of those ten times when the President and Senate have been of different parties, the Senate has confirmed two of those nominees and so the overwhelming history and precedent is that the Senate generally does not confirm a nominee to the supreme court for a vacancy that happened in the presidential election year if they are of different parties and newt that distinction. Is Far more than just a partisan. Matter. The reason that that history and precedent makes sense especially now is that the kind of judge or justice that will be nominated or confirmed. has become a central issue in elections. It was a major issue between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton as to the kinds of justices. They would confirm my new book one vote away the book opens. With the day in February of two, thousand, sixteen when Justice Scalia passed away. and. I was in South Carolina was actually with my debate team. We had a debate that evening the middle of the presidential primaries and we had the South Carolina debate that eating. And I got a phone call. From the sheriff in West Texas who had found as body, and this is before the news was public the sheriff called both me and call John Cornyn the other senator from Texas to let us know Justice Scalia, was dead. So we spent a couple of hours actually brainstorming about, okay. What are we going to do and I put out a statement within minutes of the news breaking publicly. I put out a statement then saying under no circumstances. Should the Senate take up any nominee? Instead. The American people should decide why because we had a Republican majority. In the Senate that the American people elected in twenty fourteen, they went on to reelect in two thousand sixteen and grow the Republican majority in two thousand eighteen. And we had promised the voters. That, we would stop liberal judicial activists from going to the bench and that we would fight to confirm principled constitutionalists. That's what Donald Trump. Promised to do it was the biggest reason I voted for trump over Hillary, Clinton because he promised to nominate justices and the mold of Scalia and Thomas. And it was a major reason he won and so when the president nominated. Judge Barrett. He was honoring his promise to the American people he was keeping his word. And when the Senate Republicans Confirm Judge Barrett. We're likewise honoring our promise to the voters and keeping our word. Thank God puts it in. The Right Framework Listen I WANNA. Now remember lots and lots of robinhood users didn't really experienced an outage but they probably didn't notice right because they weren't necessarily trading over the last two days before its most regular users. It's a mess and the thing about Robin Hood is while it's got a really clean interface and people loved that there's a cash management feature a big piece of it. That zero dollar trades everybody else's followed suit on that starting last fall so that's no longer really differentiator for them. So if you're somebody who feels you got screwed over you can go to another service and get the same benefits that you used to only be able to get from Robin Hood. What what was the problem too much. Trading activity who were the systems? Just not ready for it We don't exactly know They provide the they originally said. Oh our systems. We're having problems communicating with each other. They then took about twenty four hours to come out with a statement apology but a statement last night. Yeah which says basically they're DNS didn't work. They got overloaded by too much activity. there's a bunch of engineers on twitter who are questioning pieces of that. Don't quite understand it. There's going to have to be a serious audit of this. A third party audit to figure out what really happened. Do you see kind of moving now. Toward the Schwab's Fidelity's I mean we saw Schwab is buying td Traded is now going to be part of Morgan Stanley. All this was caused with zero trading days a year from now do you think Robinson's still exist because individual investments can do all this themselves. Well I think it will still exist. I think one of the questions is is someone GonNa Buy Robin Hood and if if somebody was thinking about it particularly when Morgan Stanley announced a trade deal a lot of people jump and said Oh. Someone's now going to try at least to buy robinhood. Why wouldn't you? It's very popular. You know one of the things about Robin Hood is even after. Everyone went to the zero trades. Last October Robin Hoods user. Base grew in fact it grew faster in Q. Four then it grew in Q. Three grew faster. I am told in January and February. Then it didn't Q. Four so it was still expanding. Robin Hood was wonderful acquisition. Target for somebody else. Who wants to rival with Morgan? Stanley did what happened over the last two days though clearly but that question. And what do you think regulators are going to do? Well I think they're going to look you know it's interesting There is a law on the books here. The Congress could actually theoretically take a look at this although it's supposed to be based more on bigger systemic issues for example like the flash crash what happened robinhood affected robinhood users. It didn't affect the markets as a whole but look regulators are going to have to take a look at this and as I said there is going to have to be a serious audit. What Robin Hood has said? So far just doesn't cut it. How many customers do they have? I honestly don't know the exact answer except to say a lot and definitely skews younger. They are they are known as a millennial focused company so you think they still would be an acquisition target just at a lower price. I think so and look. Obviously we'd be talking longer term. Anybody and I don't have any information that somebody was in talks to buy them tomorrow but anybody who was clearly is going to understand what happened and why the outage happen but yeah they could definitely still be an acquisition target. There's still a very popular company. They still run a lot of trades. There is though probably a new litigation risk. Now I mean you have to be able to prove. I don't know how you would prove that you were going to make trades but if you were Robin Hood user if your money was sitting inside a Robin Hood and you didn't get to play on the biggest gain points day ever for the Dow you've got to think there's GonNa be a class. I think anybody not tried to log in day. Who couldn't actually has what you don't even have to do. But if you were trying to log in on that day I think you have a claim by the way just to answer your question? It's a little over ten million users right now substantial. What's worse than not being able to get in that day or what's down to try and back in eighty seven New Orleans picking up the phones. We'll look I mean Robert Robert Unfortunately I mean it it. It came back online after a couple of trading hours yesterday in theory. Maybe you could. Have you know if you couldn't get in on the upside? You also couldn't get in on the downside but you missed on both say you've missed the whole turn up and down Dan. Thanks good to see you. Thanks for listening. Squawk box is hosted by Joe. "Dollars a month in terms of what you have to make on a lease payment. You gotTA come up with ten thousand dollars a day in revenue one way or the other and if you have to sit down that plane or you're not flying it is often. It's going to be tougher for you to come up with that. Ten thousand dollars is liquidity and issue for the large airlines. Not Right now. They're fine. The issue is going to be with your low cost carriers particularly in Southeast Asia. They don't have the liquidity that you see with the large carriers here in the US as well as in Europe. Thanks Phil in addition to today's airline CEO meeting at the White House the Aviation Subcommittee of the Senate. Commerce Committee will be talking about the corona viruses morning. Senators will be examining the role of global aviation and containing the spread of the disease. Texas Senator Ted Cruz joins US now. He's the chairman of the aviation subcommittee. It's been a while center. It's good to see we. We were just talking off camera beck and I about. What is rutgers suggesting nobody go abroad it said? They made the decision this week to cancel all of their spring break semester. Study abroad programs and their international spring break programs and the President says that staff and students really shouldn't travel overseas so I mean who would go overseas now Senator and not only that. But what what? How do we help the airlines? And what what? What are you going to be looking for today? As far as questions from it from the executives well I think the risk profile varies depending on what geographic area you're looking at and what's important is that we actually follow the science here that we listened to the scientists and the experts that we do everything we can to contain this outbreak and and to prevent it from becoming a full fledged pandemic. The numbers are troubling. And we're right to be concerned as we sit here this morning we've got over ninety. Three thousand confirmed cases of the virus. We have over thirty one hundred. Nearly thirty two hundred confirmed deaths of of those cases of the virus. We were sitting at one hundred twenty seven in the United States so the bulk of that as overseas and the overwhelming majority of that is still in China. That's that's good news that that is good news. The extent to which it's been contained. Now you look at where else? It has spread heavily. We know that his spread heavily to Iran. We know that the spread heavily to South Korea. We know that it's spread heavily to Italy and so all three of those are are dealing with significant challenges. The hearing that I'm sharing this afternoon it's to bring in the CDC the Center for Disease Control and the department transportation and customs and Border Patrol. Terrific listen to the experts and to understand what's going on. I know a lot of people are concerned but I think it's right not to panic not to give in to to to hysteria but to be driven by the facts and and the Marshall every resource possible and necessary to to protect life to contain this and hopefully to get it behind us and once we take care of the threats to human life than the next stage is going to be the economic implications of what the slowdown means and in particular right now the the the inability to travel back and forth to Asia to China in particular you know by definition senator the migration from Wuhan Tana to just about every country in the world now one hundred percent mediated through someone that was on an airplane that someone get on a boat and go somewhere. I mean we can pretty much assume that that this moves globally from the airline industry. So there that's the first place we should look to try to to try to. They should be doing things to try to stop this from happening. What do we need them to do? Well and that's something. I think. The trump administration acted wisely when they stepped in early and halted commercial air travel back and forth to China when they set up a quarantine regime for for any Americans who were abroad. The affected region to go through quarantine before coming back. Those are both extraordinary steps. It's been a very long time since we've seen the federal government do either one of those and listening to the health. Experts visiting with with Tony Fox headed. Cdc Yesterday the health experts are telling us that doing that significantly slowed down the spread of the virus. That if we hadn't done that if there had been unrestricted air travel back and forth from China from the time of the outbreak. Two now that we would in all likelihood be looking at at a significantly larger number of cases in the United States what slowing the spread down does is it gives you time to develop to develop vaccines to develop treatment protocols and the administration is is meeting with me met with pharmaceutical. Ceos earlier. This week is is is meeting with the experts at the FDA and the CDC and and working to getting testing kits out. That's one of the significant steps next week. A substantial number of testing kits are are being sent out so that by the end of next week. They're expecting to have the capacity to conduct over one million tests. Now we don't have anywhere near that number of cases but obviously a lot of people right now are concerned if you're manifesting flu like symptoms a lot of people wanting to get get checked out get the test and so I think they're stepping forward proactively to get those tests out in available people who've still coming in from around the world and if they're asymptomatic or if there we don't have tests. I don't see how you know we. We can expect to be expect to be screening people at this point. We're just we're not screening people. Are we well it? It is a challenge. We are certainly a screening people. If they're coming from they're coming from China Wuhan region in particular. Were not allowing commercial air flights and so that limits some of the flow and we got how many places I mean you in trump. Should we be people from Washington State of We're just talking about seeing if they have a temperature right. We're not seeing if they actually have the crow virus well and that's right and part of the challenges that the incubation period. We don't fully know we think it may be fourteen days although there some conflicting evidence on that that's going to be one of the questions we're gonNA address at the hearing today so so one of the questions that we are trying to ask people that come in. Have you traveled any of the affected regions? Not just on the plane. You're coming from right now but in the past two weeks. Have you traveled there and getting those questions I met with the head of the Airline Association? Yesterday they were talking about some of the some of the challenges. They're finding implementing what CDC is asking for in terms of getting the full travel history of every international passenger. And I think they're they're working hard to do that. One of the challenges is also. Cdc is wanting airline employees to take temperatures of passengers before they board airline employees naturally are are hesitant to do so. They're not healthcare professionals and so some some of the ticket agents are saying. Wait a second. Why am I taking a temperature? That seems a reasonable question for an employee airline employees to be asking. Hey senator. Today's Wednesday right so super Tuesday was yesterday. Yeah okay so we saw what happened in the great state of Texas. And I'm just wondering I mean you you've spoken passionately about Cuba in and your feelings on on the Castro regime etc seeing Bernie Sanders. Are you gratified that the Texas gave the vice president and a big win or would you rather have donald trump face sanders? Because he might be better. Where are you on? You got any comments on that. How do you look at it? It's like look online enemy is i. Don't know how to view it. I'm certainly grateful that Texas didn't vote for Bernie there are a lot of things. Bernie embraces that. I think are really wrong and really dangerous and served with Bernie. He's a true believer but but he is a socialist and you mentioned Cuba. He has for decades gone out of his way to praise communist dictators weather. "Policy tax policy. I know that I actually believe that. One of the reasons why stocks are up today is not just as a reaction to yesterday's market conditions. I think that investors are looking at the possibility now of Joe Biden winning the nomination. And he's going to be very good for stocks by is more centrist. He understands Wall Street better than Sanders. And he's less likely quite frankly to put forward confiscatory economic policy investors want by and they don't want sanders. I just think I don't know if I describe as much to the debates as to the you know in a philosophical sense some of the stuff Bernie says is good but when when en masse the democratic population suddenly sees the real possibility on the predicted markets at sixty five percent that it's GonNa be Bernie Sanders and it starts actually becoming the reality. I think that's what they saw last week. And it's like if you're not if you're over thirty five or thirty. At least that is a horrifying prospect. I mean someone like me. It's a it's a it's just unthinkable and I don't know why you nominate someone who can't win in the general election. I think a lot of Democrats finally realized we're going to nominate a guy who is going to be McGovern from from day one he's going to be McGovern so it had nothing to do with the debate like we came back. They came back and decided the joe out of all the other candidates. That Vice President Biden is the best one for lack of of of an alternative Bloomberg. A billionaire I was GONNA ask you frank. I can't remember exactly what I thought. You were kind of positive about Bloomberg. What is your most in the last ten appearances on Squawk box? What's the most prescient point that you gave us over the last ten where you are absolutely right about that? Democrats and I've said this again and again. Democrats will not vote for billionaires. They did not vote toddstarnes. I thought you said don't underestimate him. Money can go a long way not advertising. You have to perform well and debates and my Bloomberg performed horribly and he agitated people focus of building their hold on this focus groups that we've been doing these are Democratic voters not pundits those focus groups for showing us that people will lead leaving. Mike Bloomberg in droves for Joe Biden. They've found Biden particularly over the last week. South Carolina debate performance performance speech. He gave in South Carolina. We saw last night. Joe Biden is hitting his stride. This was not the same Joe Biden that began the debates six seven months ago but he is just as likely to have the same type of gaps that he's had over in terms of public speaking gaffes. That's not going away right well. That's that's why I'm telling viewers to watch the debate in Arizona. I think it's going to matter. Tremendously and Biden is is gaffe prone but at his best. He is a very strong candidate. He delivers a very powerful passionate speech. And in looking at the polling data looking at the voter response Biden is on his way up and Sanders might. Well have hit his peak. Frank really really quickly What does this say about? Not just Michael Bloomberg but the idea of spending lots of money. I'm thinking of Tom. Style and everybody else is there. Is there a walkaway lesson from this? That this is not going to happen again. They may still try. Republicans donate money. Republicans donate Billionaires Democrats. Do and the fact is if you're wealthy unsuccessful. The Democrats are not going to vote for you. It's just a fact highlight the media's performance Let's see we went from maybe warn to Kamla Harris to Mayor Pete. Then clothes are had a short little time in the Senate. They couldn't hit if fell out of a boat. They couldn't hit water franken terms of what was going to happen here. They mix up what they want as as completely compromise media saying they're non biased. They go from from what's actually going to happen. They have no idea what this may be the first time in the six months. I've been doing this show that you and I agree. The worst pundits. I'm glad we haven't agreed at one point over the last six months. I want you to tell us what it was because I put my money on a bunch of different things based on what you said and none of it ever came true right. I told you billionaires. We're not going to win. Democratic primary. We agreed then too so we were actually in agreement on that one. I think you grow that. We grew that beard so people would remember you at the same guy and six months ago. Tough-guy thank you frank a stock to watch today Campbell Soup. Shares are rising Right now after earning sales beat the street and the company raised its full year profit outlook in a bet. You lots of people you go to the shelves in the supermarket and Souso anything can right about now. They were trying to get away from soup and get into all sorts of fresh fresh foods and things but Designer soup to soup is a soup is good. She can noodle for if you're not feeling great. Well that's a separate. Tease will be next next on swap pot once we take care of the threats to human life than the next stage is going to be the economic implication Texas Republican Senator Ted Cruz on the rise in corona virus cases in the US and the Dominos to fall. Oprah CEO's of major airlines are scheduled to huddle this morning at the White House to talk about the corona virus crisis as the disease spreads airlines are starting to feel a bigger and bigger revenue head. Philippine joins US right now. He's got more on that story. I felt hey becky. This is the corona virus Gut Punch to the revenue stream for the airlines. How much will the airlines be? Hurting as the cancellations mount. Well it depends on how accurately we get this data and the most recent data from a couple of weeks ago from the International Air Transport Association. Known as I- ATTA. They said that global traffic would drop four point seven percent in twenty twenty and it would cost the airlines about twenty nine point. Three billion dollars in lost revenue. But if you take a look the airline index keep in mind that that estimate for my Atta. That was two weeks ago. And we've seen the cancellations pickup since then this is why analysts are saying for the airlines. It's all about managing cash flow right now as you take a look at the four largest. Us Carriers Delta American united and southwest over the last month American basically since February Twelfth. The stock has lost forty two percent of its value. The CEOS of those companies will be here at the White House today. They're supposed to meet with at least vice president. Mike Pence we could see them also meet with the president if he decides to join that meeting but guys at the end of the day. I'm not sure what the White House can say to. The short of. We'll do something to help you out financially. Which I don't think is going to happen because if you help out the airlines do you also help out the hotel industry. Do you help out other industries that are suffering because people are simply canceling their trips. Right now they're just going to have to work their way through basically the fact that they've got too much supply and the seats are just not being filled on these planes to the degree that they expected just a few weeks ago. I guess what's unique about the airline industry is they collect fees upfront for the tickets that you're selling you so In a certain sense it's kind of like the float that the insurance industry is to an extent to an extent but you also have a lot of people who will say we'll pay the two hundred dollars to cancel the ticket now a lot of airlines and you heard from United yesterday that joined American and Alaska as well as jet blue in terms of cancelling change or the fees that goes with changing ticket or canceling a ticket but those are in certain areas in terms of tickets that are bought now between later in March. What's interesting here? Becky is that their costs. Don't drop they still have to. Let's say a you're you're leasing narrow body aircraft and it costs you three hundred thousand.

that was a great CNN poll and it was accurate in the fact that this was one of the best state of the union address is that any president has ever given it was patriotic it was inspiring he talked There was plenty of time for the important details of the case to be lost or or on a more sinister note. There was plenty of time for Kennedy to craft his story. Our second conspiracy theory is that Ted Kennedy he was either intoxicated or otherwise impaired when he crashed the car even if he wasn't this theory puts forth that something was off with his State of mind that night and whatever it was directly led to the crash and Mary Jo's death when the story of the accident I broke. There were two main in questions that arose. What was Mary Jo Kopechne e doing in Ted Kennedy's car and was Ted Kennedy Drunk Ted Kennedy. He didn't drive at least didn't often drive given his substantial personal fortune and high status as United States. Senator Ted had a chauffeured referred to cover. Most of his transportation needs in fact. Ted's personal chauffeur. John Crimmins was at the cottage party on Chappaquiddick island on the night of the incident. prims was a guest. That's considered to be true but he was also there in some capacity as Ted Kennedy's driver river so when Ted Kennedy prepared to leave. Why didn't crimmins leave with him when asked later? Ted stated that he didn't want to pull crimmins wins away from the party to take him home. CRIMMINS was still enjoying his meal and the company. It's odd the crimmins would be preoccupied with a meal since it was after eleven at night when Kennedy made to leave that maybe that really was the case given the full day of partying and relaxing. There's one thing to note here though we're unsure what to read into it. According to the official account Ted Kennedy retrieved his car keys from crimmins after Mary. Jo asked him for a ride home. This could mean that Ted was planning on having crimmins drive him home until Mary. Jo asked for a ride. If he wasn't planning on driving he might have been drinking. Mary Jo by all accounts was a smart capable woman and it would have been very out of character for her to be drinking drinking heavily at an event like this but she hadn't driven herself to the party and thus wouldn't have needed to worry about keeping an eye on her drinking. There are some uncorroborated reports that she had drunk at least some amount of alcohol at the party. She may not have been impaired but she also may not have noticed if Ted was not in a condition to drive now crimmins was both Kennedy's driver and occasional aid he knew the man well and it's not a stretch to to assume that he would have noticed if Ted was too drunk to drive himself. The fact that he handed over the keys to the car would seem to indicate that as far as the partygoers eighty goers were concerned. Ted was only fine the big discrepancy that may lead one to ask if Ted was drunk or not has to do with the geography a Chappaquiddick island.

"This is our second and final episode on the Chappaquiddick incident of nineteen sixty nine when rising star Senator Senator Ted Kennedy crashed his car into a pond on Chappaquiddick island the incident resulted in the death of Mary Jo Kopechne e and to this day there are questions regarding how she died why she was in the car and what led Ted Kennedy to wait ten hours before notifying lying the authorities that he had left a woman trapped in a submerged vehicle. The chappaquiddick incident is among the most famous political scandals in American history three and is seen as the key reason that Ted Kennedy never had the chance to follow in his brother's footsteps for real shot at a presidential run but the legacy of the entire affair is inherently problematic in no small part because we tend to refer to it as a political scandal and not on a case of manslaughter over the past ten years ever since Ted Kennedy passed away at has come to be accepted that the real story story of Chappaquiddick may never be known after all the two people who were in the car that night are both dead and gone and this episode episode. We're going to examine the unanswered questions that still swirl today over the chappaquiddick incident our first conspiracy theory is the Ted Kennedy's Kennedy's account of when he left the Party and when he crashed is false this is best evidenced by the so called missing our between when and Ted Kennedy left the Party and when he was supposedly spotted by a sheriff's deputy over an hour later our second conspiracy theory is that Ted Kennedy he was intoxicated or otherwise impaired that night and that this was the reason for both the crash and his actions immediately following it finally Ted Kennedy waited ten hours before he reported the crash. It's been suggested though obviously never proven that Mary Jo lived for much longer than initially suspected and that she may have been rescued. If only Ted had gone for help in our last episode we discussed the decades long series of events that ultimately led to Ted Kennedy and Mary Jo Kopechne e attending that party on Chappaquiddick island on the evening of July Eighteenth nineteen sixty nine ted was the youngest son of Joseph Kennedy Senior. The New England millionaire and Patriarch of of the Kennedy Family Joe Senior groomed his sons to succeed in politics but between nineteen forty.

"By the end of nineteen sixty eight three of Joseph Kennedy senior sons had died Joe Junior John and now Robert at all been killed before they could fulfil the extent of the ambition. Their father had Joseph Senior. Perhaps due to his own lodged intend to become president was adamant about putting the Kennedy Boys in the white eight house he had succeeded with his second son. John John's political legacy was permanently interrupted when he was tragically assassinated in nineteen sixty three with Robert debt as well and just as he seemed to be on the cusp of kicking off a successful presidential campaign the weight of the Kennedy name nail fell to the youngest Kennedy son Ted Edward Teddy Kennedy or nineteen thirty two it wasn't exactly the black sheep of the Kennedy family but as the youngest of nine Children Teddy was afforded leeway to fail in a manner that his brothers were never allowed while Joe Senior had been laser focused on ensuring the joe junior and to a lesser extent John and Robert worked to succeed in every aspect of their lives so as to prepare them for life in the public spotlight he seemed to not have the same level of commitment to ensuring that Teddy excelled old teddy had middling grades throughout his childhood though his large size made him a natural football player despite the lack of any real academic achievement he attended Harvard University for undergraduate just as his father and brothers had done sometimes name is more important than a transcript teddy was in his freshman year in college while his brother John was serving his first term in the House of Representatives that combined with the families already notable profile across Ross American news and politics meant that there was a public spotlight on anyone with the Kennedy name as the youngest child teddy likely wasn't used to having much attention directed his way. This is why he probably thought he could get away with cheating on an exam in his freshman year. In nineteen fifty one teddy arranged for another student to take one of his exams he was caught and both students were expelled. That's not the kind of backstory. Are you want to see in someone who wants to be President Teddy expelled and with few options of other schools that would actually take him enrolled in the military he served for two years in the military. Police and Joseph senior used his own military connections to ensure the teddy wasn't deployed in the Korean War which was ongoing at that time teddy was discharged in nineteen fifty three at that time Harvard University allowed expelled students to apply hi for readmission. After a few years teddy was readmitted again no doubt due to the workings of his father and his own family name Teddy graduated from Harvard in Nineteen Fifty six when he was twenty four war but he was rejected by Harvard law school due to his poor grades and the prior expulsion the academic dishonesty on his record should have prevented him from getting into most law schools but he managed to follow when Roberts footsteps and attend the University of Virginia School of law as he had for his entire life teddy performed middling Lii in his academics though in law school he started to develop a reputation for his strong oratory skills. While he was in law school teddy also had his first real run in with the law when he was charged with reckless driving nothing came of the charge and it certainly didn't seem to hurt his political aspirations but then again we must always consider teddy's powerful family and their ability to put him in positions to succeed Teddy was named manager of John Kennedy's election campaign for the Senate in Nineteen fifty eight after graduating law school in nineteen eighteen fifty nine. He went on to help manage John's campaign for president. After John won the nineteen sixty election. He wanted Teddy to take his vacant Senate seat. Even though that wouldn't be possible for two more years since instead he was only twenty eight in nineteen sixty teddy claim to.

Joseph Kennedy senior wasn't shy about his ambition to run for president in the nineteen forty election his position as ambassador would have put him in a prime spot to go for the nomination but his actions as ambassador would lead to his downfall. Every action has an effect every choice a consequence and sometimes in the rarest of occasions a person is is presented with a life or death choice that will come to define them. That was the case for Senator Ted Kennedy in the summer of Nineteen sixty-nine on Chappaquiddick Island in Massachusetts though the official account of what happened that night is somewhat muddled. The facts are as follows late at night after a party Kennedy set off down Chappaquiddick road in his oldsmobile with him was Mary Jo Kopechne acne a former campaign staffer for the recently assassinated Robert Kennedy. There was an accident. The car hit a barrier and flipped over into the water. Ted Got out and survived but Mary Mary Jo was left trapped in the car. Ted Kennedy did not inform the police about the accident until ten hours later when the car was recovered in Mary. Jo's body was found inside the initial reaction Ocean from the divers was that she hadn't actually drowned she'd suffocated and if Ted Kennedy had called the police immediately she may still be alive today. "Senator Ted Cruz is our guest Senator Bernie Sanders was on Fox News last night. Two point five five million. People watched why? Well, yeah, I imagine out of curiosity. I suspect most of those I suspect it was a combination of regular FOX viewers. And then also Bernie supporters, and listen there there are unfortunately, far too many gullible people in the world that that that that are in thrall by by the promises socialism. And and I suspect a lot of the folks turning on where we're hardcore Bernie supporters a few of them were regular, FOX viewers. So we're just curious to see what they'd say you're pulled in a lot of different directions, you working in a lot of different issues. You're traveling a lot there's some major issues before the Senate. What are you working on right now with your name on it? That is the most significant. Well, what I've been doing this week is I is actually I'm touring Texas. I'm back in Texas. This week said it's not in session and focusing in particular on the school choice legislation that I've introduced in the Senate, and it is it if passed it would be the most far reaching federal school choice legislation that's ever passed. It is operatives tax credit. So it's a federal tax credit that would give you a dollar for dollar credit on your taxes for making contributions to scholarship granting organizations in the state Senate is five billion a year or fifty billion dollars over ten years for federal tax credits for contributions to k through twelve education allowing parents to use the scholarships to go to public school or private school, appropriate schools or religious schools, and it is also five billion a year or fifty billion over ten years for contributions federal tax credits for for contributions to scholarship granting organizations focused on workforce training, technical training apprenticeships. So I spent the day traveling a construction site visiting a construction site meeting at at at Texas State technical college meeting with folks who are training to be welders work in robotics and working in cybersecurity. And those two together the potential impact. Act in terms of educating and training, the Texas workforce in the workforce, a cough across the country is enormous. The president was in Crosby few days ago, which of course in your state Crosby, Texas just outside of Houston. And he announced a couple of executive orders in line with that. How important is that? Well, I'm very glad the president was was back came to Texas. I had hoped to come with him. But actually at the same time he was down in Texas. I I was chairing a hearing in the Senate on big tech, and and their censorship of conservatives and their their their political bias. And so since I was chairing a hearing in Washington, I couldn't be here for the the events in Texas, but I was sorry to miss them. But but glad glad to say the president coming back, Texas, Senator Ted Cruz is our guest today after tax day, and this, of course, tax freedom day, as you know, all too. Well, you have proposed making the Trump tax cuts the tax cuts for working Americans making those permanent. So that they don't sunset why. Because it's the right thing to do. And and and you know, I'm reminded of right after we pass the tax cut. We look at the tax cut. It was passed in in late twenty seventeen. We've seen the economy. Take off we've seen over five million jobs created since the beginning of this administration, Texas is benefiting enormously, but under the Bill the individual tax sunset they end after ten years, and I remember just just a week or two after attack tax cut passed. Bernie Sanders was on one of the Sunday shows. And he and and all the Democrats voted no voted against cutting our taxes, and and and Jake tapper asked him said, well, why why did you vote? No. And he said, well, the problem is the individual tax cuts sunset they end. Because tapper quite rightly asked Bernie said said said look this tax cut cuts taxes on on working men and women on Americans all over the country isn't cutting taxes on middle class Americans. Isn't that a good thing? And Bernie says, of course, the problem is they're not permanent. Well, I heard that. And I immediately. Retweeted that clip Senate out and said, Bernie, I agree with you. Join with me, let's join together let's make the individual tax cuts permanent. Let's make the small business tax cuts permanent. And and and I think we ought to bring it up and vote on it Republicans would support it and Democrats it'd be very interesting because their rhetoric they claim they wanna make individual tax cuts permanent. But I'm willing to bet Bernie and the rest of his party would vote. No. But, but it would it would provide real clarity as to where they stand. I'm for cutting taxes on hardworking, Texas, the two thousand seventeen tax cuts there in December just before the end of the year. President Trump's the end of his first year in office benefited sixty six percent of all Americans by reducing the amount. They had to pay Americans. It was broad. It was the it it cut into all layers of our economy all seven tax brackets. And yet I read today that of sixty six million Americans are sixty six percent of Americans benefited direct. From that only twenty percent realized they received a tax cut change that. Well, the Democrats are very good at demagoguery and and the media parrots their attacks. And and so it's it's amazing. How many how many Democrats just said things that aren't true? If you look at the results, we cut taxes across the board. And and so I if you're a taxpayer in Texas other than for a handful of the super wealthy just about every taxpayer in Texas had their taxes cut and cut significantly by this tax cut. Not only that though the effect of the tax cut along with repealing job killing regulations. We're seeing an economic boom as I mentioned five million new jobs in the last two and a half years that that is a lot of new jobs. We're seeing in Texas and across the country. We're seeing wages going up the number one state for wage increases is the great state of Texas. And and I'll give you my favorite stat last two years which. Is in the last two years over five million people have come off of food stamps. And and Michael the powerful thing about that. That's not just a number on a pie chart, those our lives being transformed. Those are people who two and a half years ago were dependent on the federal government for their basic food needs. Who now presumably they've gotten a job. They're out working. They're coming home each night. They've got a bag of groceries in their arms. They're setting it on the kitchen table. These are moms and dads were looking at looking their kids in the eyes and who had the dignity of work have the self perspective saying I'm providing for my family that is power on. You know, what those folks are benefiting from the tax cut. Also, even if they don't know it because the economic environment, the growth of small businesses and jobs is a big part of what the naval them to come off food stamps and get those jobs and have that dignity of work. Senator Ted Cruz is our guest we're going to go to break and forty five seconds. I'm gonna record with you during the break. So we can keep you on a play that in the next segment in those forty seconds named to places when you come back to Houston that you have to eat you gotta get your fix. No matter what time of day. Well, you know, when we go out a lot Escalante is a place, we go out to quite a bit shoe as a place we go out. We do a lot of back, and then actually my girls they like sushi. So we we do sushi some to all the although my dad thinks sushi is bate as do I have a favorite. I we kind of go to Colorado, which that they they do they do awfully good sushi. And actually, my my daughter Carolina's decided she likes sage four hundred. So we've been going there lately. Right. Okay. Senator Ted Cruz, our guest, I ten. The Michael berry show continues. "Senator Ted Cruz is our guest. We're doing great. We're going hard and fast, as as you know, last night, we did the fiftieth rally and last six weeks all across the state, and we did it a threat neck country club, you were there, and we had an incredible enthusiasm excitement, and it's all designed to turn people out today election day, and and and everyone listening. Please. Please, please. If you haven't voted come out and vote because we we are fighting for the state of Texas when my wife was secretary of state, she got to travel to places that she'd never been in the state, and she said, this is really an amazing state as you get out and about I've been watching the size of the crowds, the energy of the crowds far flung corners of this state. It has to be exhilarating to travel state this big and see these kind of crowds showing up for you and excited to send you to the United States Senate. Well, Texas is an incredible place, and it's one of the wheel blessings every day. I wake up. Ju ju just. Represent twenty eight million texts used to go fight for twenty eight million Texans. And when you travel, you know, the last six weeks, we've had a double decker bus that that that that that has traveled all over state. We've been in east, Texas, we've been west Texas. We've been in the panhandle within the valley and every community is different. The diversity across the state is amazing. But but there's also commonality we all value and cherish freedom. There is a rugged frontier. Independence to Texas that that is unlike any other state, and it's incredible. When you get to see it firsthand, and I'll tell you Mike will the excitement which were saying, you know, we were down in the valley. Two thousand people come out in Harlingen two thousand people come out mission that same day we're over in Laredo. We had over thousand people come out Laredo all across the state people want to defend freedom. And and was thrilled for the economic boom. We're seeing Texas is booming jobs are blooming, and we want to keep that going. I've talked to several of the pollsters in the state in some of the C folks, and some of the national folks in the last few days, and one of the things that keeps coming up is how well you are doing in border counties in the valley. And my my sense of that must be that the folks who are most affected negatively by illegal immigration by border migration, or the folks who were saying here's a guy who's serious about securing our border is that what's going on. You know, Michael, I think that's right. And and and I think the national media and Democrats like beta what they get wrong about how to win the Hispanic vote in Texas is is they think that the to get Hispanic in Texas the vote for you gotta go hard left. You gotta support open, borders, and amnesty and socialism all of which is what beta rox campaigning on. But but but that that's almost like you've never actually met a real Hispanic voter in state of Texas. Look the Hispanic community. Our community is conservative. We believe in fate family, patriotism, hard work, the American dream. And and you're exactly right that that is Hispanic communities that often see many of the most direct pump sequences of illegal immigration that that that that illegal immigrants that are coming off and move into neighborhoods that are predominantly Hispanic. That means they're taking jobs from US citizens from legal immigrants, and and and when they're when they're coming in when it's MS thirteen. Eighteen when it's gang that are coming in. It is often Hispanic community that seeing the consequences of the crime of the violence of the drug abuse that that comes from it. And and what most Texans one. Is commonsense. Secure the border, stop illegal immigration. And and and welcome those who come here legally. There's a right way to come to this country, which is to to stand in line and follow the rules and come here legally that that the overwhelming majority of Texans agreement that Senator Ted Cruz is our guest, even some of the president's biggest allies, and I know on Fox News they've had several panels on the subject have said, this is a booming economy. The president should be bragging about that. At the big rally. He did for you here. Downtown he noted that in getting tax cuts. You were at the point of the spear on that you've been a leader on that. 'cause do you think that more Texans should be recognizing? Yes. The borders important. But man, we're doing better unemployment rates at record lows economic growth at record has does it frustrate you that this shouldn't even be close considering how strong the economy's been in. How policies you've championed have? Put us there. Well, I do think the people of Texas. We are seeing real results we have one big big victories for the people of Texas in the last two years, and and none more important than what's happening in the economy. My number one priority is you know, Michael is jobs jobs jobs jobs because that's the top priority of Texas. We want more jobs higher wages. We want more opportunity and the way you get jobs is cutting taxes, simplifying the tax code and reducing job killing regulations. All of that gets government out of the way. And it lets the incredible small businesses owners and entrepreneurs in Texas do what they do best wishes create jobs. I worked hand in hand with the president with with my colleagues in congress. We passed the biggest tax cut agenda in a generation we repeal job killing regulations. And what's happening in Texas. In the economy is incredible. We're right now today producing thirty three percent more oil than we did just two years ago. We right now today have the lowest unemployment forty nine years. We've got the lowest African American unemployment that has ever been recorded. We've got the lowest Hispanic unemployment that has ever been recorded and Texans. We wanna keep the second omic boom going and the way to do. So is come out and vote today and vote for the policies of low taxes and lower regulations that keep jobs growing in Texas. Just saw in my show prep this morning. I was going to get to it after you. And I finished our chat department of energy says the August numbers shows the US is now the world's largest oil producer. That is a direct result of policies. Absolutely. And and for eight years of Obama, we saw federal government hammering oil and gas opposed to the energy industry. And by the way, that is one of the big big divides. In this Texas Senate race in the last six years, I have been deed leading champion of the energy industry of oil and gas of jobs in Texas, and the reason is simple because energy producers millions of jobs in Texas, directly or indirectly. And and if you care about jobs in Texas, you want energy, thriving and Baidoa Rourke has been a left wing progressive enemy of the energy industry. He has voted in favor of a ten dollar a barrel tax and every barrel of oil produced in Texas. He's voted repeatedly in favor of carbon taxes is voted in favor of aggressive federal regulation of fracking. He's voted in favor of aggressive federal regulation of Ellen g exports liquid natural gas exports every one of those policies would cost thousands upon thousands of jobs. Jobs across the state of Texas would be bad for Texas. And and so I if you work in in energy, you'd have to be out of your mind to vote for beta a rookie, and let me encourage you come out and vote today and bring your friends, but even if you don't work in energy, if you care about jobs, if you want the economy booming in Texas, come out and vote today and not only that pick up the phone. Call five your friends, we know the hard less extreme they're energized their mobilized, they're angry, they're showing up and so if you stay home, if your friends stay home, you are seeing the future of Texas in this country to the radical unhinged last, and you don't wanna do that Senator say right there, you can you hang with us for one more break. All right. We'll.
