Because the people they, would get it on the street during, their uniform during that era. Day we go to the airport and. Our we have troops come through they're gonna fly back for duty somewhere they get standing ovations people give up their seats to let them set their one like that in the sixties and seventies when like that at all In fact the people who are risking their lives and in many cases fifty eight thousand digital risk did give her life For, all of us we were making fun of nation It, was terrible it messed up our politics Mr.. Our country best of our people America's a great country And as much as one I'm telling you, is tragic to me and I apologize to everybody. That I didn't. Do everything have done But I think all of us so each other, our commitment so you know. We're never going to let American get that. Way again it's gonna always be. Like it was on nine eleven or twelve thousand one we. All put American flags in our cars. We all sang the national anthem we all did. The pledge of allegiance that we'd been attack we rallied in for a few months we were the most patriotic nation, in the world we ought to be that way every single day This, is the, reason I wanted you to hear. Some. Of this there's, another just another couple of, minutes Senator Johnny Isakson Republican of Georgia with some, thoughts about. Senator McCain and, some thoughts about the nation that he served with. Such, distinction because every single day there are those just, like those firemen and emergency. Medical people in nine eleven those in the. Vietnam war who who signed up. Who fought risk their life in some cases guy John McCain. My brother-in-law rocky and my wife's brother. Flute a navy a four reconnaissance planes in Vietnam. One most decorated policy the navy during that era People. Like him were great, am I gonna follow along Father-in-law d- flew reconnaissance. And the World War Two in the Pacific did everything. He could help the country during a difficult time there there's so. Many people that did that All of, integrated identifies, but we need to all remember. We're all Americans we all those who've saved us as a country kept our freedom when we were about to lose it. Fall fourth risk their lives in died for us we. All the time like this to elevate To, their proper place in history and that's what I'm trying to, do John, McCain today only elevate John John. Was born in me and I know it That was the, best of my generation John McCain. Was and is a great human being I don't know what's going to, be said the next few days, about John McCain by whomever, it should be said what's going to be done but anybody who It tarnishes, the reputation of John McCain, deserves a weapon Because most of the ones who would do the wrong thing about John McCain didn't have. The guts. To do the right thing was their turn We need to remember that so I would say to the president or anybody in the world It's time to pause and say this was a, great man he gave everything. For us we owe him nothing less and the respect that he And that's what I intend to give John In return for what are. You gave me Gionta Kosovo twenty years ago Glenn said we're going to send some people over to verify the the crime sites The context Stay with. John Winter Montenegro went to the world security conference. In Munich here's. After that Putin saw, John McCain Ademir Putin like they were next door neighbors also like they were, Dutch uncles so proud to be in a country, that had a guy like John McCain a break the ice with the toughest over adversaries speak up with pride for. America and calm down. When they need to be called in John is. A problem too Mitchell the worst, favor of my lifetime when he made me the, chairman of the ethics committee that's a hard job and nobody likes the person who Chevron because they're scared of it But I. "Money going out the window that's not coming back in somewhere else to pay for it and we've got to means test our benefits and social security and medicare for the future to see to it that we can associate afford our benefits from my grandchildren that are six to twenty six they don't need to be paying the same thing i'm paying for medicare and for social security they could a pay more because they're going to work longer you're gonna live longer they're going to be a bigger burden on the system but as long as we put off those increases for the future we're going to end up running running the risk of retroactively having to cut benefits in the past which i will never support ever i'm for making all benefits accountable for the time in which they were passed and see any benefits they're added on in the future are paid for it in the future we start having that type of attitude then nobody's getting money taken out of their pocket and we're going to run the system for more responsibly we're speaking with the chairman of the senate veterans affairs committee senator johnny isakson of georgia and there are a lot of people who want to join you on capitol hill specifically veterans that are running for office this midterm election season senator is accent what do you think about the number of veterans that are seeking national office specifically in the house of reps and the senate and are you happy to see that there are more veterans getting involved in politics i am glad to see i'm very glad to see it and i think it's a good resume item for someone running for office to have served in our military is quite frankly i don't know what the number is today but if i'm not mistaken the number of the veterans in the united states house united states senators now below thirty percent i think i'm right you may know desert you are but it's below thirty percent of that's you know you've heard they'll say seeing is believing we'll seeing is believing when you're talking about service in the military you have to really have done it to totally the impact i've had a couple of cases where i was asked to go on a code elda afghanistan or iraq because everybody that was going into this from the congress that never been service they want somebody who'd been in the service to go with them that's not very good when you're talking about the people that pass your budget establish your policies and soviet your priorities for future so i'm glad they're more willing to run everybody give them a good look and hope they will be successful do you think that that can contribute to a an improvement of relations between both sides of the aisle when we look at issues like this burn pit legislation put forward by congress amassed in congress and congressmen masten congresswoman gabbard these are two people very different ideologies from different sides of the aisle that have been able to come together to work on this and to understand each other do you think more veterans in congress will mean more of that happening well it should but i'll i'll tell you this now we proved in the senate committee vote on the mission act in committee devoted out to go to the floor was fourteen to one seven democrats and seven republicans voted for one republican voted against it so we had a fourteen that's a pretty good bipartisan vote and we do that a lot of the bills as well the the it's essential to have legislation have both fingerprints on it or you're never going to be fortunate we don't have a veterans who are democrats and veterans who are republicans we have veterans who served in the military we need we don't need a partisan is that service any more than it already gets barcelona's from time to time something that i think a lot of people will agree with and something i'd like to hear a little bit more of in this current political climate that yes let's all work together to get things done one thing that we wanted to bring up a few people in the newsroom made monitor to make sure that i asked you about this and i know the vso's have been very involved in it as have a number of other organizations and that.

"Cbs ion veterans continues i'm eric dane now back to my conversation with the chairman of the senate veterans affairs committee georgia senator johnny isakson what do you think we can do to combat this issue of a growing suicide rate among the veteran and military communities well we've got we've got a space the music and three or four fronts first of all the va has got you by the mental health timely the mental health benefits to the veterans they get help when they need it and we've made a great step forward in the last year by getting the three national hotlines manned in place where i veterans if they call our hotline they don't get an answering machine they don't get a wrong number they don't get a busy signal to get a human being a mental health expert on the phone to deal with their initial contact they get a referral bail based on the evaluation of that contact and they get services within his many hours a few hours as possible for the time they made that call it is we have done amazing job of getting these calls handled and getting them referred immediately one of the biggest problems when someone is at risk to take their own life time is everything if they if they call hotline to say i'm in trouble you need to get somebody to him now not tomorrow on two weeks not other time but now we're doing a better job of that and i think that will help us in terms of lowering the number of suicides or the rate of suicide that takes place also be willing to talk about it i mean there are a lot of people it's not a pleasant subject suicide is a reality of our society it's reality of saudis around the world is probably must confront and you confront it to ask him questions you're talking through an doing good listening or giving somebody chance to tell you their problem so you can attack it early on rather than wait until it's too late to many people only want to discuss it senator after it's hit too close to home and we need to have those conversations earlier on of course that's bad news at the suicide rate is growing there's also some positive news in the veteran community with recent statistics relating to veteran employment employment showing that much like the national unemployment rate the veteran unemployment rate has gone down how happy are you about that and how much more work do you think they're still needs to be done to make sure that every veterans doing their their part to contribute and happy and a career i'm i'm happy obviously the employment rate is rising and improving i'm not happy until it's totally eliminated in every veteran didn't want the job has a job but i think the movement of our economy the tax law that congress passed now in place that things at the va is done we're just getting ready to confirm a undersecretary of labor is signs nothing but veterans employment those things are going to make a big difference to get employment employment right down even further when it comes to benefits that are available to veterans and retirees there's a lot of worry that benefits in general not specifically relating to healthcare trike hair or anything like that that there may be cuts coming to benefits in the future is that something that people should be worried about or is the senate veterans affairs committee house veterans affairs committee committed to making sure that the vet the veterans benefits that we have remained in place i think we ought to see to it that the benefits that we have in place stay in place in the veterans get what they've been promised retroactively take away a benefit that you can't you can't retroactively take about take away benefits without causing horrible problems anyway but what we've gotta also started doing is recognizing that the rate of increase in the future of a benefit declining is not a cut and that benefit there are a lot of people who take that argument say well if you're gonna cut my benefit from percent or something to seven percent or something in the future not what you've earned in the future that's no it's not it's a change in the benefit in the future that you're gonna make and that's what we're going to have doing social security we cannot afford to twenty trillion dollar deficit forever we cannot afford to have the.

"Bemoaning the fact that if this nomination doesn't go through for the doctor he goes back to a white house military office which is now more of a toxic working environment than perhaps it ever was yeah it's hard to imagine what that would be like on the day after certainly wouldn't be very pleasant for any number of people but you know we don't know for a fact that this will go away i think it needed is right that the reporting this point suggests that there's some real trouble the president's comments today certainly seemed to be like a hand if not to suggest an alternative course for the doctor the doctor clearly didn't want to take it at least as of now but tomorrow's another day it's not just democrats like jon tester who've expressed concern that the republican chairman of the committee joined with senator tester in agreeing to postpone the confirmation hearing and other republics have said that they take these issues seriously and want to take a look at them this is the senate right now controlled by republicans only fifty one to forty nine you lose a couple of senate republican senators and if democrats hold together that means there's not a confirmation you're so right to make that point about senator johnny isakson this is as bipartisan as things get these days to the best friends of our broadcast peter baker nita kumar thank you both for starting off our conversation tonight and to our viewers we just wanted to take a moment to get some political news tonight out of arizona where there was a special congressional election today and where polls closed about an hour ago the race is in arizona's eighth congressional district leans heavily republican the racist for the seat that belong.

"Sure well as you know the santa foolish committee is a very narrowly afflicted in terms of bounce and so it's got eleven republicans and ten democrats and rand paul senator rand paul from kentucky i had indicated that he had some concerns of director peyot and in particular is concerned about retro pop views on troops in afghanistan and whether he would agree if the president wanted to withdraw the troops from afghanistan and also views on the iraq war and the history iraq war and whether it was a mistake or not and so center politics that he might vote can't i'd retro pompeo's nomination ultimately after some conversations with the white house and the like he decided that he would vote in favorites or the last minute switch that made the votes eleven to ten in favor of moving retro pompeo to the fore and out of committee with a positive recommendation now what's interesting though is that senator johnny isakson from georgia wasn't pleasant at the committee and that means that the committee would have been deadlocked ten ten and unable to report the nomination but senator chris coons agreed to switch his vote from not president democrat making the vote eleven to nine to one odds even event central courtesy happening there and ultimately align the commuter report director palmdale mission to the floor with a positive recommendation ultimately became he almost certainly will be confirmed there are three democrats agree to vote for jimmy but let's talk about pompeii no one even the democrats who voted against him question if he's qualified so what what why why the why the drama it's hard to know i mean obviously was confirmed with strong bipartisan support over sixty votes in the senate for seattle rhetoric just a few months ago and so it is odd that we see the southlake going on over becoming secretary of state you know i think a lot of ways this is reflective of people democrats in the senate react to the president and their unhappiness with the way the president with with the way the white house has been as going forward and so they're sort of taking out a up there's nothing wong audited with him he's a west point graduate distinguished bachelor west point he's a graduate of harvard law school served for a number of years the military had a successful career outside.
