House Dems Delay Voting for Increased Security for SCOTUS Justices

"So right off the bat, protesters have shown up outside the homes of Supreme Court Justices, which is a violation of the law. There are statutes on the books that protect federal judges from that kind of coercion and intimidation and threats. The very presence. How'd you like to have 200 lunatics on your lawn, screaming at you with a bullhorn? Brett Kavanaugh's got young children, Amy Coney Barrett has young children. The left wants this. And if you don't believe me, if you don't believe that the left wants violence, they want threats. They want people being intimidated, senator John cornyn. Had a bill that was unanimously passed by the U.S. Senate. That would increase and enhance security for Supreme Court Justices and their families. Seems pretty bipartisan, right? You want to know what steny Hoyer, steny Hoyer and the Democrats are doing in the house. They're holding it all up. The house Democrats have changed the bill with the express intent of delaying protection for the Supreme Court Justices, whose lives are at risk. I mean, let's not mince words here. House delivers Trump impeachment article to Senate, setting stage for trial

"The second impeachment trial of former President Donald Trump is underway after House managers delivered the article of impeachment to the U. S Senate Monday evening, charging him with incitement of insurrection over the deadly attack on the U. S. Capitol, Donald John Trump engaged in high crimes and misdemeanors. By inciting violence against the government of the United States. Maryland Democratic Congressman Jamie Raskin serving his house impeachment manager and reading the charge on the Senate floor, But the trial won't begin in earnest for another few weeks, a pause allowing more time for preparation. Some Republicans say it shouldn't be happening at all. Now that he's out of office. This can happen. Anytime of political party has a majority. And there's no time limit. There's no statute of limitations. That would mean that the new precedent set is that next time Republicans were in power they could reach back and impeach a former Democratic president, Texas Senator John Cornyn, also taking issue with the push to prevent Trump from ever seeking office again if convicted by the Senate. But Democrats say the former president must be held accountable and the trial will move forward even is President Biden tries to accelerate the fight against Cove it and find common ground on more covert relief open to changes in his proposed package. I prefer these things to be bipartisan, because I'm trying to generate some Census and take sort of the How can I say it vitriol out of all of this, But he's already suggesting that just because of Bill passes along party lines doesn't mean there isn't unity. In addition to being a source of friction, the impeachment trial will take time and conviction would take much more than a party line vote in the divided chamber days after January. 6th. It did look like there was no mentum. Among Republican senators to convict President Trump. John Roberts is co anchor of America reports on the Fox News Channel. The White House was concerned that the numbers could be high enough for their actually to be a conviction. Which would have meant that 17 Republican senators would have had to vote in favor of convicting President Trump. But since then, the mo mentum toward a conviction among Republicans has waned to a large degree, and now the momentum is actually swinging the other way. Pendulum has now moved toward declaring this process to be unconstitutional. This idea of holding a Senate trial for a president who is no longer in office and adding to that is this idea that the chief justice of the Supreme Court, John Roberts, will no longer be presiding over the trial that will now fall to the Senate. President Pro TEM Senator Pat Leahy from Vermont, all of which taken together adds to this growing idea in the Republican Party that this is an illegitimate process that this is being done on Lee for political reasons. It's on Lee being done to punish President Trump and really doesn't hold any validity in terms of whether or not President Trump will continue to hold office. What about the big picture here? And the political calculus for Mitch McConnell, who's now the Senate minority leader again? Um, because some analysts have pointed out that he seems to be treating this impeachment differently than the last one. You know, as if he feels it's more credible or at least that's how it seemed initially. Um are they reading too much into that? Or is he you know, does he have sort of an ulterior? Agenda here. Mitch McConnell was going further than I've ever seen him before, in terms of what might happen if there were to be a in impeachment trial in the Senate, suggesting that he was really trying to make a break and President Trump But in the days that followed that, really now, the weeks that followed that McConnell seems to be taking a different tack. I have been told by sources in Congress that McConnell, Maybe one of the people whose coalescing around this idea that this is impeachment trial is not constitutional. I don't want to say that he thinks it's a legitimate but not constitutional, and that the president has already left office. I think there's been a bit of a change in position for Mitch McConnell. What about pressure on the new president to sort of not interfere and let this trial happen? However, the Senate wants that to happen. Because it's clearly been at least slow down portions of his agenda just as he's trying to do as much as he can as fast as he can. Right. There's no question that a Senate trial Is going to affect Joe Biden's agenda and how quickly he gets his confirmations die. How quickly he could get some of his signature legislation through that, said Joe Biden is a you know an alumnus understand it. He knows that the Senate Act is an independent body. It's been said that there are 100 presidents that inhabit the Senate. I mean, clearly they are of their own minds. So for a president to say, Well, this is how I think the Senate should do. It is not gonna fly very well on Capitol Hill. So is a student as an alumnus. Understand it. Biden. I think his wisely stepping back to say, Look, this is your deal. You handle it. You handle it The way you will atone east in the public statements. I wouldn't be surprised if behind the scenes in private. He is raising some concerns about what might happen in the next few weeks in the Senate, but but clearly he's he's taking a step back to say. San. It's an independent body. I'm not about to tell them what to do, because if he were, he would likely get some blowback from them, and he definitely needs to send it if he wants to get his agenda troop I know you've covered the White House for a long time help big of a contrast is the start of this administration compared to the start of the Trump administration. Yeah, it's markedly different from from from out of the gate with the Trump administration. We were going 100 Miles an hour on the roller coaster and that never stopped. Even if you look to the very first briefing was Sean Spicer, where Spicer came out and and ripped the press for allegedly lying about the numbers of people who went to the inauguration all the way up until the last press conference from Keighley back in it, they were contentious, combative affairs. That really sort of was the hallmark of the Trump administration that it was a contentious, combative administration. This administration is much more located. Briefings are cordial. I don't want to say they're collegial, but they're definitely cordial, even though I think Jen Psaki is getting some more pointed questions, and she wasn't the first couple of great things, and I think that that's the way that this administration is going to progress. It will be a kind of a Let's get business done type of administration, as opposed to this grand show that President Trump in that shed, though I think that Joe Biden does face some headwinds in terms of getting his agenda through because he is beset with a number of different crises, and now he owns them. He's the president.

Over 100 GOP members of Congress sign onto Texas-led election lawsuit

"Trump continues his effort to overturn the results of the election. Pressuring members of Congress to support a long shot legal challenge from Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton. The details of this unusual lawsuits. I'm joined by a bee season as delicate terra Yes, thanks for joining us, as always over 100 House Republicans signing on to support this suit. That's right. Yes. So this is a suit that was filed by the attorney general of Texas with the Supreme Court on Monday and any theater Knee general of Texas claims that officials in Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Georgia and Michigan's of four swing states unlawfully changed their voting laws, which he claimed blood to election irregularities and skewed the results of the election. So he is asking the Supreme Court To delay the electoral college vote, which is taking place next week on December 14, and he wants the Supreme Court to block these four states from casting their votes in the Electoral College. Or Joe Biden. We should point out there have not been any instances of widespread voter fraud and that Joe Biden did win the popular vote in those four states, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Georgia and Michigan. But they would the latest development as you mentioned is these House Republic House Republicans 106 of them signing on to this lawsuit to say that they supported They feel the president was wrong, and they want the Supreme Court to delay the electoral college votes here. There are some Republicans are pushing back on this effort. That's right. Nothing really interesting to watch that play out. So you did have you know, Of course, this effort is drawing a lot of criticism from some of the president's critics from Democrats but also from some Republicans. People like Senator Mitt Romney Senator John Cornyn, who essentially you're making the argument that this is anti Democratic, that it's a new attempt to overturn the will of the people. You had Mitt Romney, calling it madness. That's been interesting to watch. You know, the 106 House Republicans signing on to this brief, but then members of their own party pushing back on that with some pretty harsh words on yet not just Democrats. Criticizing this effort is also Republicans. The president also very anxious for the FDA to announce the

"What he told the senators is that they were ready to close the investigation on General Flynn they had concerns that he was a point of contact on the campaign for the Russians. And that when they picked up the phone call with the Russian ambassador. This, he said, quote elevated their concerns and they decided to leave the case open, but it doesn't answer. This more basic question, Which is what? What's the difference between an incoming Senior official reaching out to foreign governments to start working on issues of Of foreign policy and national security and folks at home could decide whether there's the corollary between the two or it's really an apples and oranges situation. Yeah, it is, and again, that's I think one of the larger concerns here is that there is a equal Treatment under the law, despite party affiliation or or political persuasion, But I would I would. I would say that Senator Cornyn on my and I'm believe I'm remembering correctly. It was a long hearing, but I believe it was Republican Senator John Cornyn, who made the point. His view is that he felt the FBI leadership in 2016 had really gone rogue and there was not sufficient oversight. And he singled out the leadership over the fact he twosome of interfering in both political campaigns that of Hillary Clinton with a very public news conference about the findings of the FBI investigation into her emails she was never prosecuted for that, and the system is not designed to sort of Lay out the dirty laundry of an investigation unless there's a prosecution and then on the other hand, then going after the Trump campaign and that these were Perhaps the most politically sensitive investigations that the bureau would ever take on. Yet they were riddled with errors and mistakes and Omissions, and it's very hard to square all of that, when these are, you know, supposed to be the smartest, brightest, most experienced brains in the room who were leading these investigations, well said, And again, our our nation deserves the smartest, brightest people in those rooms, acting in a way that their primary interest is to protect. Our national security and my point my point just it's just a senator, Cornyn said. You know, both presidential candidates were negatively affected. Um By the FBI and in 2016 so that Z if you could take the big picture, it's about understanding where the oversight, um went off the rails and again when it comes to the Trump campaign. When you look at the issue of the surveillance and the investigation, the surveillance being campaign need Carter Page, which would have included scooping up his communications and that would include his campaign contacts. Whether that was sloppiness, whether it was abuse of power or whether it rises to the level of a criminal conspiracy. And that's really ultimately for John Durham. Um, to explain. you're ready for this well frankly it's made us wish or work would shift gears and rather than on then on pause his presidential campaign we'd like to see him take a new direction so bad if you're listening come home come drop out of the race for president and come back to Texas to run for senator again are the chances of you winning the race now our vanishingly small and ready for this no everybody in Irving Texas listening and Texas need you yeah but goes on to suggest Orge impede against senator John Cornyn yeah Texas needs here's here's should if he if he does come back Gordon should say the rest of the country doesn't want you Democrats believe you're just right for Texas Democrats across the nation don't want you Democrats from Texas do I is that is that your campaign pretty much I it reminds me though of mayor de Blasio president no no no you go be mayor but I don't know you we were talking about the the better story earlier during the break and you said you you throughout the idea that maybe he's lost his star status even in Texas now when it's not a primary and its I'm assuming it in this case they're talking about him running this time against Corning Corning then they become something very different any anybody but corn but Cruz kind of had a a couple of things working against him Ted Cruz during that and one of them was the fact that many Texans voted for trump I didn't appreciate the way the cruise conducted himself at the at the convention you know the whole vote your conscience thing I don't know how much of that was in play because trump did ultimately campaign for Chris I think they did their rally in Houston in fact so I and I don't know I don't know what the numbers would be if better would be stronger against corn and that he was groups not sure but I don't know the better has that star power I think a lot of that was lost in his run for the presidency there was one thing when he was new one thing when you know he was a fresh face taking on a Ted Cruz I don't know if that again that same dynamic applies against John corner it might I would say that if anyone were going to be John Cornyn it would probably be someone like a better if it if anyone had a chance or the best chance at beating a court and would be a better maybe only because but those got already the household name in Texas well you had the household name but I I the I I think like an end with a lot of Democrats the biggest problem they have is exposure the interesting that you said the reason you were one of the reasons and you do this up for discussion is Elizabeth Warren popular because she's not the one in the news right now I mean she is because of the Ferguson thing but the for some reason the president and the Republicans have decided not to make that news which would be huge news if they wish to make that news her talking about that the white police officer murdered Michael brown which you could take and you could just use but for some reason I've can't explain why and I've I've see I keep getting angry about it so I won't so just move on from that but you've made you made the point is she just below the radar and that's what you need to be a dumb dead a Democrat right now a successful Democrat look Biden is becoming like Hillary everybody had a story yesterday about the gap for killing him and the by needs to shut up Bynes biggest problem is he's campaigning yeah but then again overlooks biggest problem was he was campaigning yeah camel like camel hair is just problem was she continued to campaign and finally somebody hit her on our vulnerability right all the Democrats problems are is that they're campaigning trump is campaigning twenty four seven that's not a problem for drum no no it's not but I'm I'm pointing out the fact that that it is a problem for Democrats look how one of the biggest I think the battle lost but remember when was it was an immigration what was it that he changed his mind number what was that remember that he said all of the people well I I'm not really going to take an opinion on this I'll let the people decide and and then I want to hear what the people have to say I forgot what the issue was and everybody just sort of laughed in Texas same while he does want to make he doesn't want to take a side on this and that's part of the problem the Democrats is afraid to take a side on something because it might be the right to it might be the right opinion today but next week it might be the wrong opinion to have I don't remember if it was immigration or gun control yeah camera what it was but it was something where he said well I'm not really going to answer that and any was mocked for that it was at a town hall meeting was one of the I think was one of the town halls yeah I guess it would have been a number of places but yeah he would he was he was marked in Cecil even by Democrats for that and so there really is a problem we talked about Hillary when Hillary was running remember the the the when the campaign said with the the the scuttlebutt or the the insta sources inside the campaign we really wish to keep away from talking think about your game Vania and it's it's more often than I than not here for Democrats but the key to a successful democratic campaign is not the campaign try to stay out of the public eye if you can you don't even like I said Biden last week even bite walking through the crowd gets himself in trouble now we suggest Chris Cuomo don't that he doesn't run for politics because he would have a problem walking through a crowd her have a problem with everybody in the crowd yeah is is that I don't even did I don't even know because we didn't know now he said it was an insult because it for to tell you because you're calling him the weaker brother but is it view is calling is calling in Italian Fredo is that a racist term I didn't say what it is I think actually it's because it it it implies that he's a member of the mafia or he's with a house at a family is all okay mafia family okay yeah not that he's a weaker brother that's a given so I think well then no no no no but that's what Cuomo said yeah almost said that's why it's an insult is because you're calling your your call me the weaker but I know the weaker brother well that has nothing to do with your heritage a lot of people write brothers from different what what background well it will even even if it was the mob that he could connect the dots because what you're you're you're trying to say that he's a member of the mob I don't know if anybody would I don't know that even connect to anybody this is what let's be honest was free to really an official member of the month but never did they just sort of let him in because he was the weaker brother what I think I think you just got a place at the table because you know you had to feed him wrong not to not to give them a meal so yeah in case anybody doesn't know we're talking about it's not the front it's the lead story a garage Hey just grow grew last night in just got bigger and bigger when the the video has come out of the Chris Cuomo from CNN at some event in New York City apparently over the weekend and a couple of very nice very polite to seem to be right they did seem to be high yeah I was I was very low make a trolls it's what they're being cut off the maestro started talking to him and one of them called Chris Cuomo freight and then he just lost just lost me in every expletive in the book yeah yeah unfortunate but yeah yeah and threaten to what thrown down the stairs on on the stairs he away a minute isn't that what the bad guys in movies too who's who's giving who this the negative stereo define it everybody all break your leg all have a guy a few I mean how far you want to take that that's a negative stereo type I'm going to throw you down the stairs well I mean it it surprised me because when when this guy because I'm afraid of any goes crazy on my that's an insult what type of an insult is that I wasn't sure you know I'm I wasn't sure what the why he objected to it so much why he was so furious at at yeah I think you so if if if if it's the mob relation that you're calling him a member of the mob you can connect the dots because that's been said before that you know Hey just because I'm Italian it's races if you say I'm a member of the mom right right I just and but but when he came out and said no it's the weaker brother you're calling me the weaker brother well that's the problem he really had what is the real problem yeah anybody can call me leprechaun anytime that's fine okay that's good I'm greedy and wants me gold yeah I don't have the energy to push anyone down the stairs I really don't or the will now they can call me names that's fine then you can call me any name from any movie I really don't care yes it's it's.

"Radio. He's Harley and I'm Gary McNamara. Eight six six ninety redeye so what's going on with the negotiations? They congressional negotiations. The seventeen members of congress that were put together in order to negotiate. Well, we're now two Wednesday. The government's been open since what for five days done. Right, right. They've never met. Still haven't sat down they've never met. According to politico, they've never met. And the deals going nowhere. They're saying even before they meet the before their their first meeting. Well, so. My my question is this according to politico, they don't trust that that the president would if there's a deal with Dhaka they don't trust that he would stick to the deal because people may forget DACA is an executive order, and he went to resend that. And of course, now it's in the courts, but why can't you fix it through legislation? There's your guarantee. Well, that's what doesn't make any sense. Were. They said they do not trust the the the here it is. But Democrats are really not the idea of negotiating unpreferred action for childhood arrivals skeptical the trumpet actually provide a permanent fix for young undocumented immigrants after he previous rejected such a deal. That's why you have the legislation right legislation would be your protection. If you had the legislation that says, for example, if you had the legislation that said Dhaka recipients. There will be a path there will be a path to legal citizenship for them. And it will work this way. That's what you would put in it. So if you're a doctor recipient, and you're classified as a Docker recipient. And the president says sorry are the or immigration says sorry, he you don't qualify because the president is in going to keep his under the deal, and he's told us to do this hypothetically. That's when you go to court, it would be overturned because the legislation would supersede that correct? So what's the problem? I I don't know. Are they are other Democrats just be as well? The the Republicans are saying, I guess the Republicans are saying three weeks isn't enough time to put a long term deal together or a bigger deal together, which would be I don't know. I mean, it would be close to. Well, geez, comprehensive immigration reform is as we've been only in congress could three weeks not be enough time, right? Because here's what you do. All right. We've got we have the outline right now. All right here. Here's yacht line. We need to negotiate it. Let's extend it for another three weeks the government being open, and you continue on that path. Right. There is no excuse right? If if you're willing to negotiate there is no excuse because if the if the executive order is that simple, which I mean, it is every executive order is not as as detailed as as any law. That's on the books. I mean, it it's not going to be this. Complicated situation. So if if the offer is again extending the, you know, I mean, basically putting DACA back into play as as as Obama wrote it and the executive order. I mean, I'm I'm guessing or permanent legal status. How does that not? How is that? Not simple. If it's simple enough through executive action an executive order, then it's simple enough to be an amendment on a Bill. That's not three weeks. No, I just did it in a few seconds. And and and if you're not there, but both sides know, they're making progress. There's no problem, then if you need to if one side wants to specify that the details are there, and you're almost there. Right. You hold the government open for another two weeks three or three weeks. Right until you get it. All right and government. Can you say, well, we can't do it in three weeks? Only government sets timetabled the private sector would laugh at all. Of course. We can do it three week. Right. We can write it down. We can get a doubt. And if we haven't progressed if we've got ninety percent of the way there. Look. How many people you, and I in our profession of done contracts. Yeah. We have started figuring out what we're going to do. Sometimes a year out. You and I have written contracts. Yeah. We've we we've we've been involved in contract negotiations we've written contracts, and we we've been through negotiating processes were both sides. No, you're progressing, but you're still a year six months out, but you're progressing, and so it's like, oh, it's good faith Macron. Okay. Yeah. We're moving on. It's done all the time in the private sector. Right. And you move forward. Okay. We're we'll extend this a little bit longer because it's good good faith on both sides. It's just things are things are are holding up because people of other things to do. And there's a little twist here in a little twist and aid happens all the time. So when the Democrats say three weeks isn't enough we can't trust the president will that's why you have contracts, and that's why you sign legislation. This thing about you. Do it the whole thing of negotiation and contracts is so you get to a contract. That's legally binding well, and that was my I thought that was the end game. Anyway, I thought that's the direction they would have to go. Anyway. Because this would again supersede any executive order on the book because the president as it's being as he signs it into law, everything the the the court case and everything has gone. So I don't know why that can't be done and you make a better point beyond that. Okay. You get two three weeks extended another three weeks. You should be able to get it done in three weeks. If you can't you can do it in six weeks. Remember? Well, remember when they couldn't get the the taxes thing done. And then when ROY Moore lost. Oh my gosh. You gotta get taxes done. Got it done in ten minutes. Okay. Maybe a little bit longer than that. And that's taxes. You're you're white. You're writing tax code. Yeah. But that's why you and I ended up paying more money is because they know they didn't angry. Delve deep enough. Stupid republicans. But the but. So if you can if you can get busy rewriting tax code. You can certainly right. An amendment to the Bill to any Bill. So so I'm writing this here. Many Republicans general that any homeland security spending deal crafted by the bipartisan bicameral group of seventeen lawmakers should be narrow in scope said Senator John Cornyn, it's not going to be an immigration Bill. It's not it's not within their portfolio. Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell is also find with a modest agreement as long as the government doesn't shut down. Again. He said on Tuesday. He's for whatever works because you know, we can't deal with messing right way minute. That was that was bainer, but we'll narrow when. Yeah. Because Vermont we know what do you mean narrow narrow bay what what are the parameters. Well was offering something on on Dacca, but doesn't want to go any further than that. And you know, then then that's one thing. I, you know, they may be at a there may be a, you know, right now, a stalemate that they they may not be able to get beyond that. But if the president is willing to go further, then you don't. This doesn't have to be a massive immigration Bill, Mr. Cornyn, it it only has to be an amendment to deal with Dhaka. Which the president is said he's willing to do. So what's the what's the holdup? If the president is willing to deal, and I don't know how far is willing to go. But but there should at least be a meeting going on. But but I what I would like to see is, you know. Not what I would like to see what you would expect is that the Republican members of congress would go to the White House and say how far can we go, right? How far do you want us to go? What would what should be? What are you doing this? What we have what what would be the saw. And so you find out what it is. And then you go when you offered to the Democrats. I haven't believed the McConnell already know, if the Democrats if the Democrats refuse and that becomes public, right? And then you can say, but we don't get any details here there. There are no specifics. These are politicians not giving us specific details. Give us the information. Give us the public the information. So we know what the debate is actually about right? Don't do this in secret because none of it is going to be secret. So let us know what it is. Just don't say it's going to be narrow say it's going to be narrow based on this at the only negotiating points can be this versus this. And if it's not this versus there, really isn't any other place to go. We'll find than we understand. I think it was mentioned on Monday. That said look the president said three years. Why can't it be ten years? You know, in terms of enforcement. Is the president again find that flying that stopping point? After President Al Faris willing to go and negotiate with that. But but it, but if the political story is right. And they're saying, well, we don't want to do anything on DACA whatsoever than the Democrats aren't willing to negotiate. Right. So at that point, the Republicans should say, don't wait three weeks Republicans should say because they are meeting tomorrow or later on today. Republicans should walk in and say, well, they said we won't consider DACA that we just want a clean Bill while then find come to a Bill that the president will sign Mr President. Are you going to you're going to sign this? Or what we went back to the president the president said, yes, I will sign it and then declare national emergency. Okay, fine. We're going to go forward with it. Because the president said he will sign it. But then declare national emergency and get this thing done. Don't wait. This Ray weeks get it done. Now. Don't don't pretend that you're negotiating something that you're not going to negotiate right again. If don't no neither side is going to budge then move on right? Move onto something else. You know, Sarah Huckabee Sanders in on Monday her first press briefing in what over a month. Right. And she said, you know, the president still has the ability, and I'm I'm paraphrasing here. But you know, he has the the executive power that he can use. If they don't get it done. Well. That tells me that that's still on the table. And if the president is considering that, and you know, you're at a stopping point. You're not gonna get anything done on Capitol Hill and move on. Declare your emergency and move on. But here's my point. If you could do that. If you thought that was a good move. If you thought there that would be that would. Work. You would have done it. Well, and that's the first thing if you the first thing the Democrats are going to bring up and they're going to federal judges if it was an emergency. He wouldn't be waiting to make the deal. It's only an emergency because he can't get the negotiated settlement. He wants through legislation. So he's calling it an emergency. That he doesn't feel it's an emergency because he would have done a day one or but had done it in December. He would have done it six months ago. And he never did it. And and so. It's not an emergency. It's just an a goal sheeting point for him is what they will say an a federal judge will buy it, a federal judge and anti-trump federal judge will buy it and say, Nope, sorry. And then we're in the courts were couple years. Yep. Because what they don't plan to hear the supreme court..

"Seven counts one count of obstruction five counts of making false statements one count of witness tampering. Yeah. That is CNN who just happened to have a camera on the scene of the arrest. Roger stone arrested in indicted this morning at six AM. He's an advisor to the president. But he was immediately after the president declared exit out he was on the outside arrested in Fort Lauderdale this morning. He was indicted on allegations. He lied and obstructed the house intelligence committee's investigation of Russian interference in the twenty sixteen election. I'll bring you the latest and back we asked Jonathan Turley to join us, and he will Catherine Herridge is over the story and she'll follow at the bottom of the hour. Senator John Cornyn to better guest to talk to a in a short term over the two big stories in this country first off on his arrest. What do they say? Then the documents they say that stone was. Conspiring with quickey links the indictments is not charge. This was conspired with WikiLeaks. But it seems to indicate that he knew about the hacks. It also says the Trump aide charged in the mullahs probe had had multiple contacts between Trump associates and Russia during the campaign. So we'll see what they say that Roger stone new. They also said that he lied to congress obstructed Justice. And you know, that he also say conspired to tell somebody else. To not tell the truth to the special counsel. I'm also wondering is it necessary to have a big raid was a necessary to get Well, Paul Manafort outta bed wasn't necessary. As Roger stone, a bike risk couldn't you've said, can you report to the courtroom and made sure he showed? But what does it mean for the whole investigation, Dan Abrahams on ABC cut one? This is the first indictment where it becomes clear that the special counsel believes that the Trump campaign knew about the hacks before this material was made public and remember they're one of the key charges in this case, so far is of the Russians engaged in the hacks, and this is related to WikiLeaks and the key phrases. I think from this indictment are that a senior Trump official was directed to contact stone about additional releases and about future was allies. Yeah. So we're still speculating, but this is a Trump I wouldn't say adviser, but he's a longtime friend. He was the one who always urging him to get in. But almost immediately after Trump declared next thing, you know, Dan, Abrahams as Dan Abrahams said stone was there, but he was never on scene. I mean, he wasn't in Trump Tower. He was talking to the president. But he wasn't part of the campaign. The question is the tech. I think they're talking about your own Coursey. Did they tell you? Did he tell Drome Coursey not to tell the truth the to coverage tracks? Did you not tell the truth to investigators? Keep in mind to off people are still speculating, but I think the Trump campaign's gotta worry as Rudy Giuliani said maybe craftily over the weekend. And last week. The president in collude, but he's not saying that anybody else in and around the president did that's a lot different than we thought a year ago. But true the dissemination matters Joe Lockhart says this cut five Roger stone is the person who is at ground zero of Donald Trump's political career. He's the guy who planted the idea you can be president of the United States. And my guess is is a very small circle of people who could be the one that we're talking about here who did Rogers and Donald Trump is in that circle. Wilsey was he directing Roger stone where they're getting the heads up. You know, there's a heads up on something's coming down. Whether it's a s an opponent's divorce and allegations that are coming through. You have no obligation to go forward and say, this is what's happening. And this is what's going to be taking place. But what I do say what bothers me about the whole Trump all the Trump people that we had nothing to do with Russia. If the president came out early says I had nothing to do with Russia. But I have no idea. What all these other people were doing I just know that Hillary Clinton was using a private server, it made herself vulnerable and Podesta got caught in a fishing expedition. And when he did that these emails became public, and it hurt the campaign, but it didn't mean these emails were illegitimate. It didn't mean they were made up. This is really was going on. This is what Sanders thought this is Debbie Wasserman Schultz found out. This is what Hillary Clinton was doing. We want the other big story. And I want to take too much time away from Jonathan Turley hill break it down from the legal perspective was day thirty five now the shutdown. I don't see any leverage for the president. And I think it's unjust. I think the prisoner box himself in the middle of December. I think he's one hundred percent, right. We need money for wall. I think he's one hundred percent right to listen to the experts and say, you don't need a big cement wall. You need slats in certain areas, you need improvements in others and other areas, you need just technology. But Nancy Pelosi says, okay, I'm not dealing at all I'm gonna pretend zip. I didn't vote twice before for fencing across the border to pretend that the president isn't giving me wiggle room. I'm gonna pretend that the opera out. There did not involve DACA, which you said you go to bat for on a daily basis. So they were two boats yesterday in the Senate, and it's clear both didn't pass weren't expected to pass. But clearly, evidently, reportedly promote people sources axios to the hill behind the scenes. The Republicans are getting restless, they they basically lead vice president Pence have it and Mitch McConnell habit. Why did you box in here? These innocent people can't work this. The speaker of the house is gotten all the leverage on justifiably where is the way out here. Here's the president from the Oval Office cut eighteen. You need the wall. We can all play games. And we can all talk about technology. I know more about technology than anybody. You don't have the wall. The technology does the work you need to walk. A lot of the technology is put on top of the wall. That's how you see the cameras and everything else. I mean, they literally put the technology. They fascinated to the wall, then you have drone technology. So meanwhile, Nancy posts, he's just not budging. And I think the thing that's going to make her move is if Democrats who got in this job who won their house seats in in red districts are going to rise up and say, we really look petty. This is nothing to do with us. It's about you cut twenty one. This shutdown is not a glitch. It is a crisis that the president alone created and at the president alone can end Republicans in congress have been accomplices to the president's irresponsibility and just a Norring the consequences of his action either. He doesn't know he doesn't care. No. It's you you don't care. You don't care about funding the border, you don't care about the border security. There's legitimate crisis happening. We see the families coming across. We see the drugs coming through. We know it's through the most of the port of entry. But the wall the barrier allows you to funnel it in a certain area provide additional technology there, she's pretending as if there is no debate. She does not sit down and to give and take with anybody that wants answers. She just sits down with people that want to kiss her bought Mercedes slap says the president's not giving in but has to consider other options cut thirty. It's clear that congress. We're not getting to a solution there. So yes, the president is seriously considering other options that includes declaring a national emergency. Obviously he's looking into these legal options that is something he can do. And what is so troubling is the fact is yes, he's been able to keep the Republicans unified in the Senate. Obviously we needed the sixty votes mansion came through. But no other. What is? Lost some Republicans. Listen is a crisis time on all sides in Washington. I think the president's right here. I just don't know where his leverage is. How does he get it? Let me know one eight six six eight seven six six nine the Russia investigation. First indictment in months, it happened to Roger stone the closest yet to the president United States. Don't tell me Matt aboard anything to do with it. Or all these oligarchs have any role in it. This is the guy that could cause trouble. What is Jonathan Turley think? And not think back in a moment with expert, then Senator John Cornyn big day. Don't move giving. You everything you need to know is Brian Kilmeade. No. Now, the three big things you need three three. It is over after thirty five days. The house has passed a measure that has now been signed by the president to reopen. The federal government for three weeks while border security funding is figured out ending the longest government shutdown in US history. Eight months after catching fire in the middle of a parade. Disney's mullets float has returned to the magic kingdom. Blunt indictment earlier today, former Donald Trump adviser Roger stone's seems to have lost the support from one his heroes. Former president Richard Nixon, the Nixon foundation tweeting out today this morning's widely circulated characterization of Roger stone as a Nixon campaign aide or adviser is a gross misstatement. The shutdown is over. I will sign a Bill to open our government for three weeks until February fifteenth in first thing Monday morning for the very latest on long-term deal negotiations, and what it means to you. "Now, Senator John Cornyn had some interesting comments just a minute ago on the show in regards to Roger stone's arrest. He was well here he is he had he had a few things to say here. He is full. It looks to me like director Muller is focused with a lot of peripheral characters people that have maybe some association with the campaign, but nothing with actual the election, which is supposed to be the focus of the Russian investigation in the motor special counsel investigation. So I have no idea what Mr. stone did or did not do, but that has nothing to do with the Trump campaign and the results of the two thousand sixteen election law right to the phones at Gerry on three sixty good morning. Gary. Hello, Gary, good morning gentleman. Every time. I hear Cornyn voice. My blood boil is that well, he. Mitch McConnell's a lapdog and should have gotten border wall or security money funded along time ago, he's just part of the bureaucratic system. He's part of the swamp, and he needs to go we need fresh people. I don't know. He just ineffective. I think. Well, one other quick thing. Y'all talk yesterday about WalMart and truck driving. Yes. Yes. I was driving for a while. I listen to you all go in an me. And I did it. I right at Christmas because they wouldn't ever give me home for my own time. When I was supposed to go home who who you're driving for brutal persuade I quit. Why? Well, like, I said, they didn't get me home one. You go home every three and a half to five weeks for a few days to three days. Yeah. I would schedule it, and they wouldn't give me home in time. I gotcha. I gotcha. I got you didn't fix your life. I hear you. I understand that. Yeah. I'm sorry. I work done like that. Listen, I I agree with what corden was saying completely. I really do agreed with every single word. It's like what it comes down to is. Will they be able to ever if whoever their they get whatever they find out? Can you can you prove that it had a result in the election that it had some kind of influence in the election or did not have to? To which tells me it's all for nothing. I mean, if you break the law, if if if you attempt to kill someone you go to jail, I know you don't have to actually accomplish the cried to get arrested. I mean, it's one thing when you're you're one convict people that are involved in say a murder because you know, what the end result was it's very clear in this. This is this is is I've said before this is chasing a dog. This is a cart dog chasing a car. And once it gets the car, they're not going to know what the hell to do with some text messages where people are listening to the show from. Let's see here listening on my ipod really got an ipod. "Can all play games. And we can all talk about technology. I know more about technology than anybody. You don't have the wall. The technology. Does the work you need? The fact a lot of the technology is put on top of the wall. That's how you see it the cameras and everything else. I mean, they literally put the technology. They fascinated to the won't then you have drone technology. So meanwhile, Nancy policies just not budging. And I think the thing that's gonna make her move is if Democrats who got in this job who won their house seats in in red districts are going to rise up and say, we really look petty. This is nothing to do with us. It's about you cut twenty one. This shutdown is not a glitch. It is a crisis that the president alone created and at the president alone can end. Pelicans, and the congress have been accomplices to the president's irresponsibility and just ignoring the consequences of his action either. He doesn't know he doesn't care. No. You don't care. You don't care about funding the border. You don't care about the border security. There's legitimate crises happening. We see the families coming across. We see the drugs coming through. We know it's through most of the port of entry. But the wall the barrier allows you to certain area provide additional technology there. She's pretending as if there is no debate. She does not sit down and give and take with anybody that wants answers. She sits down with people that want to kiss her bought Sadie slap says the president's not giving in but has to consider other options cut thirty. Obviously we needed the sixty votes mansion came through, but no other democrat, then you lost some Republicans. Listen is a crisis time on all sides in Washington. I think the president's right here. I just don't know where his leverage is. How does he get it? Let me know one eight six six eight seven six six nine the Russia investigation. "Responsibility are flying. And the prospects of finding a quick solution to the crisis or of coming together to pass significant legislation when it ends remain grim now with Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell, making his first significant legislative overture to break, the stalemate Sunday, the outcome might rest on the capacity of house speaker Nancy Pelosi, and Mr. McConnell to find a way to bridge the political divide between them their parties and the White House, but as congressional reporter Emily Cochran at the New York Times says their new relationship is not off to a good start. So the two of them, obviously, different backgrounds. Sides of the ideological spectrum. And they've often found the belts on opposite sides of several issues in the shutdown is the latest one day worked on different side of congress, obviously in different ideological sides. For decades, they have a working relationship, but it hasn't always gone. Well. That was interesting to read to in your piece that you said they have actually accomplished stuff before. Sometimes it's hard to remember that one day they get bogged down in the in things like this shutdown. Almost two decades ago they were both top members on their respective appropriations committee, and they work together on spending bolster foreign operations. Then another infant has an eight when congress associated the economic recovery package McConnell called her quote extraordinary. She was equally complimentary of his leadership, then but in recent years, they've certainly gone head-to-head speaker Pelosi with not very complimentary of the tax overhaul that just went through and later McConnell had issues with the Affordable Care Act when it was first introduced and several other parts of the democratic agenda when President Barack Obama was an office and later Pelosi. In charge about. So do these two generally dislike each other is this just politics? I think it's hard to say they they have a working relationship. They just happened to consistently end up on opposite sides of the issue. It's also worth noting. They tend to work with the other litter there, for example, speaker Pelosi spend more time working with Senator Chuck Schumer her democratic counterpart in the Senate and Kevin McCarthy who's the Republican leader in the house? But this time they're both leaders of their respective chamber. So it remains to be seen how they work together looking forward speak with Emily Cochran congressional reporter at the New York Times. She's got a piece called McConnell and Pelosi heavy fraught relationship, the shutdown hasn't helped anybody expecting that things will improve relationship wise. So that things can get done over the next two years that the question we've asked as reporters on Capitol Hill many times. In the last few weeks, and it's unclear. What what's next the first step is to get through the shutdown to end this impact? And even with the new proposal from the president from leader McConnell Pelosi is again going to introduce a Bill to reopen. The government herself this week. It remains fifty what is actually going to get through. And until that happens. Everything else is kind of at a standstill boy what about something like infrastructure, which people from both parties have expressed at least in some way, shape or form some interest remained abusing. But lawmakers are hopeful about they nonpartisan issue we need the public works overhaul. But again without a clear way out of the shutdown. They can't really get started working on it and going this long without any kind of compromise on reopening. The government doesn't bode well for any kind of compromise going forward. So there remained some optimism. But we'll have to see how the shutdown in coded Senator John Cornyn from Texas at the very tail into your story. He said, we'll figure something out. We always do don't seem very close at this point. That's the kind of optimism we asked about an infrastructure Bill or some of the legislative priority. Take on for example, the new North American trade deal or raising the federal spending limits or a plan to lower drug prices. There's still hope that something will get done with the shutdown. It's still unclear how exactly we're going to get out of that. But they haven't quite given up yet. Emily, emily. "Senator John Cornyn Republican from Texas. Senator from Texas. Unanimous consensus the corm copy dispense with without objection further aspirin animals consent that Douglas Madonna a congressional fellow in my office be granted four privileges for the remainder remainder of this year. Without objection. Colorado. Transgender. Into Corum call used when there is no Senator wanting to seek the floor. The Senate is in session today. The house as well is back at four PM eastern four legislative business. None of the business scheduled for the Senate or the house deals with reopening the government and the federal government is actually closed today because of the weekend snowstorm. We heard earlier from the Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell, the democratic leader Chuck Schumer or another democrat has not yet come to the floor. We'll wait to see whether one does. So while we wait we return to a bit of this morning's Washington journal, we had on Jacky Simon from the union American federation of government employees talking about the partial government shutdown. Also took your questions and called a strike. This was in New York City. Jackie simon. Well, I think that you make a lot of very good points. Particularly the fact that the Senate voted unanimously on a Bill that's virtually identical to the one that Mitch McConnell refuses to allow a vote on. Now, you know, it's a new congress new year new congress. This is the one hundred sixteenth congress. There are a few senators, but I if if they vote the way they voted on December nineteenth there's enough support to override any kind of veto. So that's really a fairly simple and straightforward path out of this mess. We were just on the verge of avoiding shutdown. December when the president. Responding to some critics, I guess on cable news decided to move the goalposts. And there was a Bill. He was ready to sign and then he decided he would not sign it. So you've got a as as you've described? There's a clear way out of this for Mitch McConnell to allow without Ashland. Wisconsin is Scott federal worker. Go ahead. Good morning. I would like to provide my opinion on the blame on first of all it's not one party. It's all the politicians are to blame. Their sent there in voted into public office to stand up in negotiating on behalf of their contingents. President Obama ran in one office based on change President Trump. Now also got an office based on change America wants change they want politicians that'll provide them the information. They needed. Noticing congress they sailed their job with three continuing resolution. So they didn't fund the government when they should've Tober is a new fiscal year in congress didn't do that. And they weren't gonna shoot him back then so they're failing. And one other point. I'd like to mention to as federal employees. We can file for an appointment. If we need. Because we were a little status. Jackie seven is that something is recommending. Yes, we are. We are recommending. Unemployment eligibility varies by state, but we are absolutely recommending that that let employee's. Apply for unemployment benefits in their state. It's money that helps you keep audience altogether. You know, if you when this thing is over and you get back pay you you have to refund any of that unemployment benefits that you received. But absolutely you should get unemployment insurance benefits. If if you're able speak of win this thing is over White House economic adviser Kevin Hassett had an interview with the PBS NewsHour over the weekend. And he talked about furloughs and the impact on federal employees. Here's what he had to say workers are furloughed and right now it's about twenty five percent government workers are furloughed, which means that they are not allowed to go to work. But then when the shutdown ends they go back to work and they get their back. Pay future of government workers were gonna take vacation days say between Christmas news, and then we have a shutdown, and so they can't go to work. And so then they have the vacation, but they don't have to use their vacation days. And then they come back, and then they get their back pay. Then they're in some sense. They're better off. Jackie chan. Well, that's an absolutely absurd statement, federal employees are not better off as a result of this shutdown. They're hurting their facing, very serious financial consequences. Some even have their we'll have their security clearances place in jeopardy when they fall behind on their bills. It's one of the first things that puts security clearance, and ultimately a federal job in jeopardy is falling behind on your bills people will have to pay late fees. They may lose their daycare slots may may even lose their homes if God forbid they were already behind in their payments is unequivocally unambiguously bad for federal employees. That's why the overwhelming majority almost complete majority want this thing to end right away. Just a few minutes before the end of our program today on this day, twenty four of the government shutdown. We'll take a few more calls Jaggi. Simon of the American federation of government employees Mahdi's waiting in Idaho, falls, Idaho. Good morning. Good morning. Good money. Jackie. Good morning. C span. I thank you for taking my call. My thing is that a lot of people. Just don't understand anything. Government workers never hold people as harsh. But if the government as the president and the congress. The Kansas Senator publicans if they don't have no concern about people and workers, you know, they could do anything, but just like that tax cuts to the rich. They could upset about the wall then. Yeah. Use that money to pay for the wall or. Yeah. You could have just come out and tell the American people, you know, what I want to be at a wall. And I want you to pay for it just be honest with the people, and and then they will go from there. So Jackie Simon. You're right there certainly were many opportunities over the last two years when the Republicans controlled both the house and the Senate, and obviously the White House when they could have passed funding for this particular. Element of security this notion of a wall, and they did not. So I think your characterization of the current situation as a holding place hostage. We've used the word extortion. We've used the word Pons hostage situation. You know, any of those things I think are good descriptions of what's going on. And it's shameful Lee is in south Portland. Made good morning. Yes. This is Lee in good morning to you. What I wanted to say was Mitch McConnell will not bring this up to these voted on because his wife works for Donald Trump. She's secretary of transportation to me that's a conflict of interest and the and the wife of any of those senators that's has anything to do with passing laws should be working for the president. It's definitely a conflict of interests. Don't you think? That's the reason why Mitch McConnell will not bring those bills up for vote. Jackie Simon thoughts. Well, I don't agree that you know, spouses. You can't work for the same employee employer or be involved in the same kind of issues. Obviously the secretary of transportation has her own interests and professional responsibilities as does Mitch McConnell. You know, there's lots of speculation as to why Mitch McConnell has been so reluctant, shall we say that's a nice word to allow a vote and your theory could be true. But I certainly don't think that it would be fair to bar the spouses of politicians are political appointees from any particular occupation. Less than a minute left. What is what is afghan- ease plan for a day twenty four of the government shutdown? Well, we've been having protests at at federal installations and offices all over the country. And and at at senator's offices, and we've encouraged our members just make to flood Senate offices with phone calls to ask their friends and their family members to put as much pressure as they possibly can on senators to get a vote on the house passed preparations. Have you tracked? How many calls that is meant. And what you've been able to generate from what you've been pushing somebody at my organization has its numbers in the thousands. But I can tell you the number right now. But hopefully, those numbers will grow a lot in the coming days. There is one more federal worker waiting to chat with you. Marie in Wisconsin. Go ahead. I've been coming into a little bit later to the show. But the one thing I haven't heard mentioned is what are other federal employees. Saying crust in our household? We feel like we have a lot of labels put on us that people out in the media or just even say, they want to say, well, if you feel this way, you know, you're a Republican or you feel this way, you're a democrat, and they don't even ask our opinion or that of how we feel. And that we just get stuck with a lot of labels. And I'm just wondering how many other people you've soak with kinda feel almost ostracized in that by the general public. Thanks for that that comment. I think that you raise a really important point federal plays are a political when they're doing their jobs. Absolutely. They're not on one side or another. But another another issue that I think maybe you're getting at is these labels essential. And essential. It's. They aren't even the labels that the federal agencies use. But the law is what decides who is required to work during a shutdown and who is locked out and prevented from doing their job, and it really has to do with the protection of life the protection of property. And then there's a little discretion on the part of of politicians to decide who else. Politicians who run the agencies who else gets to come to work and who who gets locked out, but people who are locked out are not in essential. They do very important work for the American people, and they should be respected for it and appreciated for it. And and we should get rid of these labels of essential and essential because every federal employee is doing an important job. That's essential Jacky, Simon is policy director of the American federation of government employees. Always appreciate your time. Thank you so much from this morning's Washington journal. The journal is live every morning on C span radio and television starting at seven AM eastern and on Tuesday. We will talk with congressman Scott Perry.
