"Better following Cardinals when I was if you don't get to see that it was insane. I I felt this the second time I've done that. Second time. I'm a season ticket holder. You remember last season when they ended up tying or where it was with Detroit. They were down in the games like by 25 points in the third quarter. So tell me elected. I left and then I listened on the way home for them, Win the game or tie the game. And then last night is Sooners at receiver across the goal line. I shut it off as sweet as the wind was last night. It was really sad that You didn't have the Red Sea there to celebrate. You imagine fans would've been going freaking crazy. I know and it's been such a long time. I'm so happy for that team and I keep saying I'll never do it again. But I did it again. I was one of those angry fail, you might be the good luck charm. As soon as he broke that tackle. I shut the TV off and I turned it on five minutes later, and they were interviewing Cuyler Murray and he was smiling. We'll do it more often because they want. I should just never watch again even by that fan. All right. Thanks, Jamie. Yeah. We were going to talk about the Arizona Cardinals little bit later on in the show. But congratulations to the Red Sea. And Yeah, I did it. I shut the TV off and then turn it back on in the postgame, But yeah, that was me. Don't rub it in, but that's what I did. We're going to get to a lot of that stuff. It was such a fun game. You can hear my voice yelling at my TV last night Great game for the Cardinals Fun football weekend. But a lot of seriousness to talk about. Ah, big hurdle was cleared in the United States Senate as they now will move to a full vote today of the Senate, with the assumption that Amy Cockney Barrett will be will be confirmed to the Supreme Court. Arizona Senator Kirsten Cinema, says she will be a no vote. She's confirming that she's loading. No, it shouldn't mean shouldn't matter. And I think that's part of the reason why she waited as long as she did. But she is a no vote for different reasons, not the process. You know. Chuck Schumer still upset about the process and All of that politics. I think most of the country doesn't care about but we will now watch moving forward is this confirmation happens? What will the makeup of the court looked like is this judge gets onto the court? Onto the court and starts to hear cases with the rest of the court. I will say it seems very interesting to me all of the push back from the Democrats they fought through the night. This is where American politics is. American politics and both sides of the aisle should respect it in each other. And this whole idea there's a there's a campaign ad for Joe Biden that Cindy McCain is in which we could get into the whole ins and outs of the ad. But in the ad Mrs McCain says that my husband and Joe would fight like hell on the Senate floor and then go to lunch together. That's that's true. I mean, there's a lot of truth to that. I was friends with The senator of the late Senator John McCain, and he would tell me great stories about Ted Kennedy. Ted Kennedy was known as a liberal lion. Most of you remember who Ted Kennedy was Ted Kennedy. Oddly enough, died of the same illness that took John McCain's life. But hey, would tell me a couple of stories about him and him and the senator, and they would fight like crazy that there were freshmen senators on the floor having a procedural battle, a Republican and a Democrat. Will McCain heard that the Republic This was happening, and he went down to the Senate floor and took the side of the Republican senator. And then the Democrats. Senator Kennedy showed up and they ended up nose to nose Kennedy and McCain nose to nose and when they left the floor. Ted Kennedy joke A. We did pretty good, and then they went about their business. They never would have. They never would have voted for each other..

Changes in population of Arizona swings state more left

"This is a special edition of Balance of powers. Look at election 2020. I'm David Weston. Today We look at three critical swing states that could help decide who occupied the Oval Office next January. We start with Arizona once solidly Republican state that is now Maura, Va. Toss up. Arizona has 11 electoral votes and polls show a tight race. As for Vice President, Joe Biden hopes to become the first Democrat to win the Grand Canyon state since Bill Clinton did back in 1996. Or an overview. We spoke to Bloomberg contributor Rick Davis, who ran the 2008 presidential campaign of the late Arizona Senator John McCain. Four years ago in 2016. It was not a swing state, so it's one of those that have moved into the Swing column primarily because it changes both demographically in the state, but also ideologically demographically, I think you know, the increase in Hispanic population have moved it a little bit closer to the Democratic column. Hispanics make up almost a third of the Voting population now and on ideologically in 2016 trump one white suburban voters in Maricopa County, the largest county in the state. What really decides the outcome in states and in 2018, those same suburban voters fled the Republican Party, causing Martha McSally running for Election to the Senate to lose a Republican, so it's going to be an interesting ride there, but it's definitely a swing state this year. So if you say Maricopa County is I understand, you know better than I really determines the state. Largely. It's a really big count and a large portion of the voting populace. What has changed 16 4018 has the Democratic nature of Maricopa County's changes it more hetero genius than it was before is that they've changed their attitude towards things like immigration. Maricopa has been changing for a long time is one of those state or one of those counties. It's the city of Phoenix is in Maricopa County that has grown at an enormous rate. It's been one of the top five fastest growing counties in the United States for the last 15 years and is one of the top five of the largest counties in America. So it is a complex political beast. I would say What is starting to change is the Republican lock in the suburbs. In the past, we've been able to win the state by winning Maricopa. And if we are not able hold onto especially white women suburban voters in Maricopa County. We can't win the election for a perspective on what it takes to win statewide office in Arizona. We spoke to someone who's done it. Former Republican governor, Jan brewer. She admits the state is changing, but she hopes it hangs on to its conservative roots. There's a good chance that it is probably turning a little purple hair in Arizona, which is very distressful US Republicans, but the bottom line is is that we've had a lot of people moving in and out of California and other places coming to the great State of Arizona czar demographics. Have really changed. I think that we have to take that all into consideration were out there.

"Texas. The avalanche of early votes is feeding Democrats hopes, especially since the bold show Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden is running unusually close. President Trump Won Texas by 9% points in 2016. So far, he's shown little worry about this year. He's been spending his campaign time and money on more obvious battleground states. Dennis Martingale I F NEWS, Texas Senator John Cornyn says he's expecting only a single digit difference in the polls on Election Day between him and Democratic challenger M. J. Hager. He tells phase inside Texas politics, she maybe winning the spending race, but that he's still winning the Texas with substance. He's outspending me, too. The one with all those out of state money. Louisiana has already been pummeled by this year's Hurricanes Laura and Delta. Number of storm evacuees from Louisiana have taken up residence in the D F W area well, Andy Dalton was sidelined last night a yesterday afternoon during the Cowboys. Ridiculous laws to the Washington football team. Final score 25 to 3 and Andy Dalton, the Cowboys back up quarterback at a concussion from a shoulder to head Blow that sent the said his helmet flying that was coach Mike McCarthy. Took notice of the fact that none of the other Cowboys on the field at the time I got into the face of the Washington linebacker Jon Bostic, who was thrown out of the game for that hit. And I guess the coach is thinking. You guys are supposed to take care of your quarterback night. That means enforce his well being. And there may be some indication there's toe what the problem is with this team. They're just they're not unified into it. And then you got a lot of people they have they have they have. They have the worst offensive line in football out because of all the injuries. Now you've got two quarterbacks out. And we don't even know if Andy Dalton's going to be back next week, and it's just a terrible situation and the quarter and the Cowboys or two and five now and those two wins, they shouldn't have even had Then we're going to check in with Steve Lamb. It signals to litigants that I might tilt one way or another in a pending case, And in response to questions from Republican Senator Chuck Grassley and Democratic Senator Patrick Leahy, Barrett made it clear she's had no discussions with the White House about how she might rule in cases involving the affordable care act or the upcoming election. It would be a complete violation of the independence of the judiciary for anyone to put a justice on the court as a means of obtaining a particular result. Trailing in the Polls and Time Running Out, Trump Looks for One More Comeback

"From his first day in office Donald Trump has been the shock-and-awe president, but it's possible with three weeks until election day that Mr trump has lost his ability to shock and awe us and with his poll numbers slipping what we've seen in the past week has been especially Trumpian. Even for president trump he told Americans not to let the coronavirus dominate their lives after he received access to treatments most Americans still can't get claim. There's now a cure for cova lengthy appearance on rush limbaugh's radio show appeared on another show for a so called virtual medical exam with a friendly Fox doctor in another city urged his attorney general to indict Joe Biden and President Obama successfully pressured secretary of State. Mike. POMPEO to agree to release Hillary. Clinton. Emails pulled out of covid relief talks then pulled back in and pulled out of the next debate then begged back in then it was canceled. Are we shocked are we odd or we shrugging our shoulders and shaking our heads? The flurry of activity is help to put the president in political peril in five battleground states two fivethirtyeight pulling average Joe Biden at fifty percent or higher. That includes Wisconsin Michigan and Pennsylvania. The three states that put Mr Trump over the top in two, thousand sixteen, and when you look at the other swing states, Biden is leading and everyone but Texas, and it's remarkable that we're even talking about Texas meaning that in one thousand, nine, hundred, Reagan landslide is not totally out of the question. Even now with the president cleared by his doctor to return to campaigning his sinking poll numbers have made fellow Republicans nervous about their own prospects in. November. I'm feeling great I don't know about your president trump trailing in the polls and increasingly erratic spoke to hundreds at the White House on Saturday his first public event. Since being hospitalized, we're starting very, very big with rallies still reeling from his faltering debate performance isolated in the White House. The president spent the week minimizing the virus. Don't let it dominate. You don't be afraid of it I think this was a blessing from God that I caught it. I'm telling you we have a cure more than just a therapeutic. We have a cure, any thirty, six, our conservative media blitz Mr Trump spent two hours on the phone with rush limbaugh? Tear. Me When I was coming down the the escalated, a beautiful golden escalators and take what was billed as an on camera medical examination with a Fox News contributor I've been retested and I know I'm at either the bottom of the scale free on Friday the president's top infectious disease expert. Lame. The Rose Garden ceremony two weeks ago for the White House outbreak, we had a super spreader. Event in the White House and it was in a situation. Where people were crowded together. We're not wearing masks at what point do you think you contracted it looking back? I don't know the they had some big events at the White House and Perhaps there. But this week, the president appeared to blame his infection on gold star military family they come within an inch, my face sometimes they wanna hug me and they wanna kiss me. Than they do and frankly. I'm not telling them. Back up as poll numbers drop, the president is searching for a political weapon publicly pressuring the Justice Department to Prosecute Democrats unless bill bar dates these people for crimes that the greatest political crime in the history of our country. Then we're going get little satisfaction unless I win and lashing out at Senator Comma Heron. Reporter Jeffrey Goldberg Addresses Trump’s “Loser” Remarks, Talks Using Anonymous Sources

"It has been a rough Labor Day weekend and the trump. White House where officials are absolutely full out freaking out about Thursday. Night's report in the Atlantic that trump had characterized Americans who died in war losers and suckers trump has spent the past four days repeatedly nine the story marshalling all kinds of people to. Come forward to knock it down he insisted today the quote an animal would say thing that the White House trotted out figures like Sarah Sanders who we know is lied to reporters multiple times to claim the report isn't true because they were there when trump didn't say the terrible things he allegedly said take they're hoping you don't think about that formulation too much. The main problem for the White House here is that the evidence supporting the story is pretty obvious and clear and almost overwhelming to anyone not inside the trump reality distortion bubble. The Atlantic's Jeffrey Goldberg reported that trump cancelled a visit to an American military cemetery near Paris back in two thousand eighteen partially because he worried his hair would become disheveled in the rain and partially because he did not respect the American war dead interred there. In a conversation with senior staff members on the morning of the schedule visit trump said, why should I go to that cemetery? It's filled with losers in a separate conversation on the same trip trump preferred to the more than eighteen hundred marines who lost their lives at Bellawood as suckers for getting killed. Now, the sources in the story are anonymous you know anonymous sources are not as. Good. As name sources when you're evaluating something, but it doesn't mean that the claims came in on some anonymous tip line that no one knows where they came from. It means a reporter in this case, Jeffrey Goldberg spoke to people directly interviewed them and has agreed not to identify them in the story Jeffrey. Goldberg, will be here with me to talk about that in just a moment. His initial story has now been confirmed in part or in its entirety by reporters at. All okay. Remarkably a correspondent at Fox News included in that lineup whom trump promptly called on the network to fire. Some of those corroborating stories included even more damning details about the president like this one from the Washington Post quote the president told senior advisors that he didn't understand why the US government plays such value on finding soldiers missing in action because they had performed poorly and gotten caught and deserve what they got and this from the New York Times people familiar Mr Trump's private conversations saying he has long scorned those who served in Vietnam as being too dumb to have gotten out of it as he did through medical diagnosis of bone spurs in his heels. Back in two thousand, nineteen trump's former lawyer and fixer Michael Cohen testified the trump admitted to faking those bonds first telling cone quote you think I'm stupid I wasn't going to Vietnam. There's even more evidence that trump view soldiers at stupid or suckers Mary trump the president's knees wrote in a recent book that trump and threatened to disown his eldest son if don Jr. joined the military. She also says that her own Father Fred trump junior was mocked by donald trump because he fred trump junior decided to join the US air. National. Guard quote my father was frequently ridiculed for his career choices and disparaged for serving our country by both his father and by his brother Donald. Then, there's the fact that pretty much none of trump's top military officials past and present are backing the president up. I mean you really can't find anyone who's stepping forward to defend his character save he would never say anything like that they aren't disputing the story instead that's been left talking heads and former flax and loyalists. That's maybe not a huge surprise because trump allegedly said about all US servicemembers, hues very closely to what he said back in two thousand fifteen about one particular veteran Senator John McCain. War here or euro he's a war hero years he's a war hero presumes captured. I like people that weren't captured. Okay I hate to. John. McCain was prisoner of war in Vietnam for five years host. Donald Trump avoided that war had a different experience in an interview in the nineties. He characterized his efforts to avoid transmitted diseases while sleeping with numerous women as quote, my personal Vietnam. An. Event with Union members today Joe Biden lambasted the president's comments an invoked zone Sun Beau who served in Iraq and then died from a brain tumor in two thousand fifteen. Those of served. Risk, their lives even gave their lives, our nation losers suckers. He's our heroes. Tell you something. My Bowl wasn't loser. For A sucker if that's I, talk about our veterans, you have no business being president of the United States of America. What's being entered into the record here to take a step back and look at all the evidence about Donald Trump. Shocking. Morally offensive. It's not surprising. It's about what we have come to expect. But. One big question that keeps pulling on my shoulders. Why are we learning about this now? What does it mean that we are? For more on that and the fallout from his incredible reporting joined by Jeffrey Goldberg He's the Editor in chief of the Atlantic and I jeff, maybe I start a little bit with. The reaction to this story from the White House you. There are stories that come out all the time about the president that are fairly scandalous incredibly scandalous. And one time they said it's fake news and they swatted away or the new cycle moved on, they do seem particularly freaked out. About this reporting. An particularly intent on attacking it what what is your sort of reading of the last three or four days of their reaction? Well he's a good question. First thing I would say is that. This is not an attack on these are not reports of an attack on site immigrants or black people or or something like that we expect from Donald Trump and something that his base might actually help him with his base. This could hurt him with his with his base You know the the the second thing is I. Think there's a lot of. Nervousness in the White House and again I won't I'm not commenting on anything having to do with my sourcing or other reporter's saw sourcing Fox. Washington Post whatever. I'm you know there's a there's a deep hostility and mistrust in the White House of. Current and former generals people who lead the military. We saw that today Donald Trump did something that I. I've never seen before he attacked his own a service chiefs. He attacked his own leaders of the Armed Forces on call? Them. I mean, even in the even in this sort of an Tasma, we are twenty twenty race that's still something but I think it has to do with the fact that This is the kind of accusation that sounds believable in also goes directly to. A core constituency that Donald trump obviously needs to Keep energized come November. Yeah we we should note that there's there's been polling of of active duty servicemembers in which he's he's underwater with them There's been an interesting sort of officer enlisted split, but he's been losing ground even with a enlisted members. He's gone for a net positive nine points and Net net net negative twelve points. You can see that there. That's the latest military times pulling. You just mentioned what he said today was pretty remarkable. Briefly, sort of like channeling kind of like left anti-imperialism vis-a-vis his own service chiefs although it's completely like made up and fabricated because he. In the next breath, he's constantly bragging about how big the Pentagon budget is and how Raytheon is making off like a bandit. So but I wanNA play that clip just to get your response to it take a listen to what he said. I'm not saying that military in love with me to soldiers are the top people in the Pentagon probably aren't because they want to do nothing but fight wars so that all of those wonderful companies that make the bombs and make the planes and everything else they. Happy. But we're getting out of the endless wars you know how we're doing. But here's the thing Jeff. They're not this drives me insane the where we have expanded our footprint, we've expanded bombings all the theaters, and this is an absolute con-. This idea that the Great Antiwar Donald Trump has some revolt on his hands on the generals. As, you will know the generals are usually more hesitant to go to war than not usually often more has to go to war than than civilian leaders for some obvious reasons. No, this was remarkable i. mean he sort of channeling. Start Sixty Bob Dylan lyrics here I pointed out on a show media today it's It's quite remarkable given that tomorrow there's a pretty good chance that he'll brag about how much money he's spending on military hardware, and of course, as you know, he's deeply transactional in love it when when foreign countries by our military equipment. So if you're looking for consistency in that particular clip, you're you're looking forward it in the wrong place it doesn't make sense in any kind of traditional understanding of of politics.

Fox News confirms Trump mocked US troops as ‘suckers’; Biden calls him a disgrace

"Reporter confirmed some parts of that Atlantic story that says President Donald Trump called dead United States soldiers, suckers and losers for getting killed. President calling on Fox to fire that reporter, Fox News. National Security correspondent Jennifer Griffin said she had confirmed trumpet disparities. Veterans also did not want to honor the dead of the US cemetery in France and also she reported that he did not want to lower flags after the death of Senator John McCain. Trump spoke with reporters in Maryland yesterday. Somebody said they say, I said race Frankly, it's a disgrace to your profession. Late Last night, Trump attacked Griffin on Twitter called for her to be fired. He also wrote that Fox News is gone. Republican representative Adam Kinzinger, not siding with Trump, the Illinois congressman defending Griffin, calling her fair and I'm afraid on the other side of the aisle, no surprise Democrats using the report in the Atlantic to their advantage. Trump reportedly called service members "losers" and "suckers"

"Again in the Atlantic and it sets the scene all the way back in two thousand eighteen when trump was in. Paris he was supposed to visit a cemetery for soldiers who died in war and if you'll remember he didn't actually end up going because he said the helicopter couldn't fly because it was raining. And there was a big deal about that obviously because he was afraid of a little rain. He also tried to claim that the secret service wouldn't drive but Jeffrey Goldberg says neither claim was true. In reality he says trump rejected the idea of visit because he feared his hair would become disheveled in the rain and because he did not believe it was important honor American war dead in that is according to four people with firsthand knowledge of discussion that day. He goes on to say in a conversation with senior staff members on the morning of the scheduled visit. Trump said quote why should I go to that cemetery? It's filled with losers. It continues in a separate conversation on the same trip trump referred to more than eighteen hundred marines who lost their lives at Bellawood as quote suckers for getting killed. Bellawood was apparently consequential battle in American history I don't remember it off the top of my head, but I'm just reading what's in the article here. And it says that in that same trip talking about world war. One trump asked who are the good guys in this war? He also said that he didn't understand why the United States would intervene on the side of the allies. Now you'll remember he said this about John McCain back in two thousand fifteen but lost. So I, never liked him as much after that because I don't like interest. But but Frank Franklin. We get to He. He's war hero. He's a war. He's a war hero presumes capture. I like people that weren't captured. Okay. I hate to. The article says that trump had remained fixated on McCain in that when he died back in August twenty, eighteen trump told his senior staff this time according to three sources with direct knowledge of quote we going to support that losers funeral end quote and that he became furious when he saw flags lowered to half-staff saying quote what the F. Are we doing that for guy was a f Ing Loser The White House denies this whole report by the way saying, then the Anti Yadda trump's supported the military more than any president. The article continues according to sources with knowledge of the president's views. He seems to genuinely not understand why Americans treat former prisoners of war with respect. Nor does he understand why pilots who are shot down in combat are honored by the military on at least two occasions since becoming president according to three sources with direct knowledge of his views trump referred to former president George h.w Bush as a quote loser for being shot down by the Japanese. This is where it starts to really get cruel on memorial day twenty, seventeen trump went with then department of Homeland Security Secretary John, Kelly to Arlington Cemetery. The article says the two men were set to visit section sixty, the fourteen acre area of the cemetery that it is burial ground for those killed in America's most recent wars. Kelly son Robert is buried in section sixty according to sources with knowledge of this visit trump while standing by Robert Kelly's grave turned directly to John Kelly in said quote I don't get it what was in it for them. Kelly said he originally thought trump was making a ham handed reference to these selflessness of America's all volunteer force. But later he came to realize that trump simply does not understand non transactional life choices. This is coming from one of Kelly's friends who Goldberg says a retired four. Star General. This friend says quote he can't fathom the idea of doing something for someone other than himself. He just thinks that anyone who does anything when there's no direct personal gain to be had is a sucker. There's no money in serving the nation trump can't imagine anyone else's pain. That's why he would say this to the father of a fallen marine on Memorial Day in the cemetery where he's buried. It goes on to talk about how trump is basically used the military as props how he thinks they answer only to not the constitution as evidenced by his gassing of peaceful protesters in officer who had firsthand knowledge of trump's views says quote. He has a lot of fear. He doesn't see the heroism in fighting and then Goldberg says several observers told me that trump is deeply anxious about dying or being disfigured in this worry manifests itself as disgust for those who have suffered. Than it tells another story about how trump falsely claimed he called quote virtually all of the family members of service members who had died during his term, and then when family started speaking out and saying, no, you didn't trump had to begin rush shipping condolences to those families. Felt last paragraph ends on, which is actually pretty profound. I didn't expect you know something. So big to be saved for the end I thought would be the author's own thoughts but it says in a twenty eighteen White House planning meeting for such an event trump asked to staff not to include wounded veterans on grounds that spectators would feel uncomfortable in the presence of amputees quote nobody wants to see that end quote. I think to me the details really do add credibility and he says he's talking to three or four sources all the time. But it got really interesting here when the Associated Press confirmed his sources essentially this tweet from James Laporta an investigative reporter former marine infantryman. Now, obviously, with the Associated Press, the port a tweeted out yesterday a senior Defense Department official I just spoke with confirmed this story by Jeffrey. Goldberg in its entirety especially the graphs about late senator, John McCain and former Marine General John Kelly president. Donald Trump's former chief of staff. So before that, you had people trying to push out, wouldn't say this. Of course, he didn't say this this is false. Trump. Himself devoted three tweets to claiming that was just a hoax made up by the media who are hungry to You know and his political career. But yeah, that was definitely a big shock when she came out in essentially confirmed most of the story. Republicans are doing their usual remaining silent or denying that it's still true. and. I just don't know how you could say it's not true. He said this in public but. I never liked him as much after that because I don't like. It was right out there and this other tweet from just some random twitter account but it made me think the commander in chief was found guilty stealing money from kids. Cancer charity mocks disabled reporters, gases, protesters for photo ops over twenty thousand lies kills one hundred, ninety, thousand Americans violate civil rights, incites violence calls, fallen soldiers, losers, and suckers. Yeah I guess if you put it against everything, we know about trump name calling certainly seems to be in his wheelhouse. Mentioned surprised that this came to be a big story

Trump panned over reports he called US war dead 'losers'

"William Branham reports on the fallout intensifying today over an article that alleges President Trump made disparaging remarks about U. S troops. It's a fake story, and it's a disgrace that they're allowed to do it. President Trump is firing back after a report in the Atlantic magazine and later confirmed by multiple news organizations, said the president several times called fallen American servicemembers, losers and suckers in the Oval Office today, the president again flatly denied ever making the comments. And instead touted military spending under his administration. There's nobody that considers the military and especially people that have given their lives in the military to be the heroes. Who the heck does he think he is his Democratic opponent, former vice President Joe Biden, whose own son, Beau, served in Iraq. Called the reported comments deplorable. But my son volunteered, enjoying the United States military as the attorney general. I went to Iraq for a year. Won the Bronze Star. Another commendations. He wasn't a sucker secretary of state Mike Pompeo, who was on a 2018 trip to Paris when the president allegedly made some of these comments. Told Fox News. He doesn't remember them have never heard the president used the language. Those certainly has said in that article. But going back to his 2016 campaign, Mr Trump has had a complicated relationship with the military theme. He's often praised those with military experience and has had many working with him in the White House. But other times he's questioned their service. Like his widely criticized comments about Senator John McCain, who was tortured and imprisoned for more than five years during the Vietnam War, a war hero. I like people that weren't captured President Trump overwhelmingly one among veterans in 2016, But since then, his approval rating among members of the military has dropped to 38% in a new poll from Military times. With two months until Election Day. Mr Biden has a four point advantage with thes voters.

"Good Morning New York. This is the cats roundtable John Katzman. PD's here Sunday morning. What's going on in New York City? What's going on in New York state was this morning? He's the minority leader of the New York. State Senate Senator John Flanagan. Good Morning Senator. How are you this morning? I am doing very well. I'm always happy to agree on his show. Thanks for having me. There are so many problems that people are worried about in Albany. There's the bail reform. Then there's there's the the new laws they passed about real estate and there's a lot of developers leaving town more jobs jobs really. There's rumors that the budgets would be six billion dollars short. Where do you WANNA start? Well I'm GONNA start with. Thank you but also recognizing nizing what we're really confronting. It's one party rule. The disaster one party rule in the state governors have lane the Senate Democrats the Assembly Democrats their priorities. Way Out of whack with the average person whether your health from the city of New York or any other part of the state. So I think it's been an unmitigated. Disaster them in charge and unlike two thousand eighteen then now have to run a record where more people leaving the state than ever before we have a massive deficit this year which is going to grow in the out us. So I'm I'm trying to send a message of hope against the backdrop of all the things that the Democrats have done the bail issue and a criminal justice reforms as their cats to are terrible terrible things for our law enforcement personnel for our first responders for DA's so we're staring down to bat barrel of a disaster again. AH WITH ONE party rule. I blame all of them including the governor. Now I had A. I had a speaker of the assembly. Mr Hasty On a Wednesday show and he felt he did the right thing on bail reform. I agreed with him. Poor people should not not stay in jail longer. But there's better answers like it's more speedy trials. What say you? I say that there was a lack of information sought from from all the people who would actually be administering law. There were never real public hearings this was enacted as part of the New York state budget. which is the last place where it should have been enacted? They never talk doc victims and never talk to not for profit would be affected by all these things so I completely and very strongly disagree with the speaker. I believe there should be reformed. I believe leaving. There should be no distinction between rich and poor. But if you're a murderer or rapist or you're an arsonist. It doesn't matter whether you're rich or poor. The preeminent concern has has to be public safety than not talking about that and there are very egregious examples since January first including somebody being killed online. Just just a couple of days ago. We thought this would happen. Didn't want to see it happen. But we're seeing the manifestation of a very bad law in its implementation. The other thing is happening a lot of real estate people are up in arms because of the laws that already passed a few real estate developers. Developers are so fed up with what the city council voted in New York City besides What the State Senate in Assembly did off Albany? Is there any hope that you could flip back to the state Senate back to a moderate Democrats. Moderate Republicans well. If I didn't think there was any hope I wouldn't be doing doing. I wouldn't be running for reelection. I wouldn't do everything possible with my colleagues to recruit good candidates so I always look at the glass as being half F O. We need to have a philosophy. We need to have an agenda that people can embrace. I couldn't agree with you. More the real estate community. Who is a major major economic? Mackenzie not only here in the city of New York but of course state of New York they were bludgeoned bludgeoned by the Democrats affordable housing as we know it was challenging enough affordable notable housing is gone. Let me repeat. It's got not only in the city of New York. But all across the state of New York the policies were enacted were one dimensional. They didn't take into a whole variety of factors and John. You're absolutely right. There are developers who are packing up and leaving and even those who are staying are not willing to take the risk that they were willing take before. Because there's no incentive and in fact they're being Ellie trivialized marginalized it being punished for being actively engaged in trying to develop ELP real estate in any part of the state of New York We had to state controller on a few weeks ago calmed Napoli that Fears that we are close to a six billion dollar shortfall in our budget. What say you I say the controllers right? He is the keeper of the Public Fisk. And he's doing very job he has to send out these dire warnings for people who pay attention. Yes there's six billion dollar deficit. It looks worse in the out years unless unless changes are made I think this is a reflection of again misplaced priorities by the Democrats and the single biggest component within that six billion dollars is Medicaid. Not recognizing the ballooning costs Medicaid including the effects of the implementation of minimum wage. which is good in some respects? But he's been very negative in its effect not only here in the city of New York but again across state. Unfortunately I do agree with the control. I wish it were to the contrary but there have to be very strong steps. Taken and all the Democrats are talking about is how to raise taxes with hundreds of thousands of people living leaving the state of New York. The last thing people should be doing is talking about raising taxes taxes. But that's exactly what the Democrats are talking about bad for the public bad for the state of your great for other states outside of the state of New York who are not only trying to attract actor businesses and people but people are fleeing outside the boards of New York. What else you WanNa tell? The New Yorkers I think people have to pay very close attention and what happens in Albany with everything that's going on in Washington and it has a tendency to suck all the air out of the room but real hard issues here in New York. There are efforts of foot right by the Democrats again to raise taxes to blow out spending in the state of New York to move social policies. That are GONNA make -Nificant New York much more difficult place place to live work and grow your family. I I really implore people to be holding the feet of their elected officials to the fire. Republicans and Democrats but in this case the Democrats profligate spending not listening to the tax payers not listening to the people who are actually living here in New York who want to keep their family here and have good healthy place to live. I'm very concerned to that. On the criminal justice piece our quality of life is eroding. That's why we had to be even even more vigilant. Not only in our governmental policy but as we look towards the campaigns. That'll be coming. As the year progresses Senator John Flanagan thank you minority leader of the State State Senate. Thank you for coming on shows Sunday morning. And let's catch up again real soon. Thank you very much. This is the cats roundtable. We'll be right back..

"Good Morning New York. This is the catch table John Cats. Td's here Sunday morning what's going on what's going on in Albany would is today as minority leader of the state. Senate John Flanagan Good Morning Senator Flanagan. How are you doing very well? John Always Nice to be with you on good Sunday Sunday morning. And thank you so much rap. Well I'm glad you're with US and You know ever since there's a super majority looks like of Democrats in orbiting passing all these new rules businessmen have take extra aspirin And a a lot of them saying well Muslim moved to Florida. Now you guys the the when the Senate Republicans had a majority already along with the Independent Democrats together. You added a balance of power. You added a Luba Sanity. What's going on? Where's the sanity? These days Chattanooga is non-existent at all and we are seeing the absolute Realize liked application of one party rule. The governor is to blame the Senate Democrats simply Democrats none of the skates responsibility. They won the election last year. And they you know they get credit were done but I think they are destroying the state of New York not only in a criminal justice way. Social Policies well economic development is joke it's laughable label in terms of what's being done. We have the most sweeping rent control law that one could possibly imagine. I don't know anyone who has property would like contingent invest in real estate so there are significant ramifications in terms of taxes and driving people out of your it was tough already driving people out of New York but I don't want to just pay a negative picture. I still think we have tremendous opportunities but you know the Democrats campaign and now the governing governing you have to be held accountable for the actions taken and they are not represented interested the taxpayers and not representative interest a bit class chapter verse. Unfortunately I give you chapter and verse it Very Big Way. Well you know I is a businessman. We were in the real estate development business and we must have spent a ton on a money of a billion dollars over the last three or four years and The fact is With all these new regulations I put things on hold on most. Is there any hope to compromise. The simple thing is we have an Alexa Alexa next to their past election day. This week next year is critical not only nationally but here at the state of New York so my job is to help recruit candidates. My job is to help raise money with my colleagues and deliver a proud coherent concise message that represents real people don't kill you with regulations relations. Don't kill you a taxes. Don't kill you with burdens that make you WANNA pick up and roof stadium. York gives you a ray of hope on criminal justice on things like that Berkshire that the Pentagon that really swung wickedly and far left this year contract and I still think we have a very Sean Chancellor John you're a Daihatsu. I want you to stay. I've lived my entire life and I still not living empire state but we have to have significant change. The Democrats have to be held accountable accountable for their disastrous public policies. And my for all kinds of different all kinds of different things he. MTA suggestion pricing again. how academic development. That doesn't recognize anything here. He talked about. We have a statewide approach. You haven't ta capital plans. They only speaks to the city of New York. There's not whatever craft talking about Long Island or they'd huts where the downstate region or western New York or the north country. That's bad that is bad way to approach this. They should not be at the city centric venture. I love the city but it should be the only consideration. Democrats one party rule is demonstrating. The air policy are way way different than the average taxpayer. The other thing that all New York is not just business people are panicking about is the police are upset that Nobody's going to be able to get arrested. Everybody's going to get whatever they call it a CB the Ticket So you can rob a store in the morning. It'd be out before the cops finish making up the The arrest just record and Robin screw store. In the afternoon you unfortunately couldn't be any more correct the policies it were an active we're done in. Hasten haste makes sways there were plenty of discussions about things like raise the age. You're out after much much much. Deliberation the policies that came forward from the Democrats that's totally totally undermine law enforcement totally undermine our district attorney's at our police officers and it sends an awful message to the public that it's the criminals who are getting the right and the victims are not being properly paid attention to Senator Galveston Centers Reno colleagues my all across state. We are really going on hammering necessarily people you know right now is committed. Domestic Violence Acura affects act. You may not have bail unless it's something something like a murder you're not gonNA be happy bail. There are so many negative things and they didn't for one second. Listen to real people. They didn't listen to the district attorney's they listen to the police and a lack of respect is being demonstrated in the city of New York and outside for who people put their lives on the line. Every single take for you. If they think it's horrific and out again we will be delivering that message and we want to foster an agenda and created a jet honor. Give us some hope. Give give give New Yorkers some hope that that rational thinking US combat I will yeah. I'll give you hope we'd have to as I said we need to get our message out there. We need to get the public behind us. And I believe that the public is finally shaped what the Democrats and by the way. The scary part is they're going to go much. Further less next year is watch part because many of the facing primaries because some that don't think that they're radical enough so that's it's going to make things more challenging but it's going to give us opportunities to really paint a contrast in terms of who we are what we stand for why we are in line with the taxpayers tax payers in the middle class average far work citizen and they are not understood. Senator John Flanagan thank you for coming on. We're out of time and thank you for loving snow. What's going on in our state in the and giving us hope that things will get back to rationale all right terrific? Thank you so much thank you. This is the catch roundtable. We write back..

"And so the other party goes out and says, well, vote for us, and we'll undo what that does guys just yet, and that becomes the fight. So instead of moving from challenge to challenge in dealing with them. You have a series of episodic political battles over whether ObamaCare is good or bad taxes or higher low and everybody promising to do or undo the other guys just on thanks to those of you who have shared your thoughts about the Senator good, bad, or indifferent? J. c. tweeted, I barely agreed if ever with Senator McCain on policy, however, his integrity could never be questioned as well as his love of this country. He gave more for this country than some others will ever understand. I have the utmost respect for his service. Thank you Senator Richard Fontaine. Could you react to that tweet a little bit from all the remembrances that have come out? And I think the spoke also to his call for regular order, having been through what John McCain went through, you know, five and a half years in the Hanoi Hilton and so forth. I think that shaped very heavily his view of what people who are servants of the American people are supposed to do and where their priorities should lie. Yeah. Think that's right. Although I think we should also be clear that his time in in Vietnam shape some things, but I think his political views were sort of grew up over time as he was first in the congress and in the Senate in part because he was he learned at the knee of some, I guess we call them lions. Now, both Republicans and Democrats Udal took him under his wing a democrat from Arizona. When he first came to the congress, Senator John tower Senator then Senator Bill Cohen who went on to be secretary of defense in the Clinton administration, though he was a Republican and Senator McCain got to see a time when things worked differently than they do now. And I think he had not just a sense of nostalgia for that era, but a sense of possibility about how people could come together around across party aisles to. To solve some of these problems. And part of the basic stuff is the mundane stuff of legislation that happens in the old civics lessons about a hell. Bill becomes law, but there's a reason why it's structured that way. Molly, do you get the sense that America's voters actually want regular order? Is that what we want? Do we want you know congress to work together or do we wanna feel like political winners? It's a question I think about a lot and I don't know the answer. I mean on some level, the congress works the way it works because the voters sent those representatives there and what the voters want is increasingly extreme. Now that may be as professors el-zor was saying partly structural, partly due to, you know, the primary election process and the way privileges. You know, the passionate holders of extreme views over the sort of silent majority. I guess you could say, and so, but but it is true that that ultimately I hate to blame the voters, but. Ultimately it is the voters who are tugging the party's further apart and tugging the Republicans further to the right in particular I, but I do think that there is a. Most Americans probably don't know what regular order is, if you were to stop them and ask them on the street, certainly didn't before heard that speech last year. And most people do want to see their policy priorities get done. And so you do see both Republicans and.

"Coming back through the Cold War and Ronald Reagan, and it really is quite striking that there is so much waffling on the Russian threat right now. Richard Haass that there was a consistency. He was critical of Brock Obama for not being tough enough on Russia at times critical of George W Bush for not being tough enough on Russia, but. The only difference between McCain's criticisms then and over the past year was then he was joined by fellow Republican senators who also saw the importance of holding the line against Putin's expansionism now. So many of those Republicans grew silent, which is why John McCain's voice was all the more necessary in the age of Trump. In many ways, John McCain represents the main tradition of American foreign policy. And as you were suggesting, what's so worrisome or bizarre, choose whatever word you want about this moment is the mainstream in many cases has been relegated to being outsiders or minority, but we have in some ways what I would describe as the most radical foreign policy of any far of any American president. Now since Harry, Truman, John McCain was firmly in the Truman through Reagan through George Bush the senior and so. Fourth tradition, very internationalised, supporting allies, working through international institutions from working closest with with democratic countries, tough towards Russia, worried, look slightly about China, and suddenly we have something extraordinarily different than the fact that it stands out the telling and one of the worrying things at last year's, whether it's foreign policy or anything else is where is the congress. This is supposed to be the classroom American foreign policy holding hearings challenging the president when they disagree raining them in providing resources where they think is necessary. And all too often that the congress has been been missing an action. Jon Meacham notice better than anybody. We used to speak about the imperial presidency office lesson junior and other historians used to worry about the accumulation concentration of power in the hands of the presidency when it comes to foreign policy. Well, guess what? We still got it. And if anything it's stronger than ever and it's because they weren't another people enough people like John McCain, essentially challenge challenging presidential perogatives when the president was driving the train off the tracks. Let's go to the White House. Now, NBC news Pentagon correspondent Hans Nichols is with us also in Washington, former NATO supreme allied commander retired, four story at navy Admiral, James Savita. He's chief international security diplomacy analysts NBC news and MSNBC and an operating executive at the core Lyle group Hans. Let's start with you. Give us the news over the weekend regarding with Korea. Well, there's an incredible shift on Friday from the president cancelling that trip. While Mike Pompeo, the secretary state was planning to head to North Korea, took a lot of people by surprise. The Pentagon didn't have any advanced warning about at least the officials we talked to. So there is there big changes going on there. It's uncertain. Just what's driving this. The president blame China on trade. But when you talk to. And then violating the sanctions. But there doesn't seem to be a whole lot of evidence that China has radically changed their behavior in regards to trade with North Korea? Yeah, there might be some softening along the border with a few truck transfers, but nothing tectonic, Joe, Joe just real quickly on on McCain here at the White House. It doesn't appear that they're in mourning any longer. I just checked the flag. It's not hats half-staff today. The flag here at the White House was lowered yesterday today to peers to be still up. Dawn has just broken, so sometimes they lower bring it down at night, but not a flights on it. And you contrast that with the congress on Capitol Hill, it's still is half staff. So it looks like Senator John McCain only getting a pass staff for one day here at the White House. Joe. Admirals ravidas. We're, we're past being surprised by anything that Donald Trump does. Let's talk instead about character and John McCain of fellow navy man. Before we get into North Korea, give us your thoughts on the life and the legacy of great man huge loss for the nation as we've been discussing. But if I may an enormous loss for the US navy, son and grandson of four star admirals really part of the naval air stock recy- served so bravely in Vietnam, but what we treasure about John McCain or the memories of him as the rebel with a cause, particularly when he was a midshipman at the naval academy, he went over.

"But you're right, and the thing about it. Richard is over the weekend. There have been reports that President Trump. Nixed the idea of an official statement and instead tweeted something about the family without mentioning Senator McCain. Specifically, he signed the defense appropriations Bill named after John McCain last week without mentioning him specifically. And I think it's a measure of John McCain and his role in his stature in American life that you cannot compare nor contrast the size of both men. I mean, the president of the United States. So small Senator McCain, so huge in our lives in now in our memories to reactions, one is whenever you Patty, whenever you act small, the only person that gets diminished his yourself and the president accomplish that in spades, this week, and it was a moment for graciousness moment to reach out and he didn't. It's a stain on his character. In the case of Senator McCain, I've known him for decades. Two things. One is throwback. The idea, here's a Republican who's hanging out with Democrats. Here's a politician says unpolitical, thanks. It was reminded when we had real people a standing and stature walking the halls of the Senate. He's one of the big guys in the Senate people we grew up with. There's a lot of them anymore. And John McCain was one of them. It's also interesting to see the European and international reaction. People like macro reaching out to say public things, McCain represented an era of Atlanticism that stretches back to FDR and World War Two goes through the Cold War in the post Cold War period. He was one of the leading advocates of NATO enlargment of reaching out to these newly independent states of basically saying American foreign policy has to be about strategy, but we've also got to be about values and principal in democracy. It is striking the statements engine mccrone from Germany in Great Britain and nothing. From the Oval Office really know, and it's. Just when you think you lost the ability to shake your head anymore. Things like this happen and you basically, you can't believe what it is you're seeing in this case, you're not seeing that. You know, caddy it's very interesting. You see the comments from Justin Trudeau talking about Senator John McCain, being an American patriot and a hero who sacrifices for his country and a lifetime of public service where an inspiration to millions Canadians join Americans tonight in celebrating his life and mourning his passing. And of course. Justin Trudeau and Canadians join Americans except of course, for Donald Trump and I must say some former members, some members of my former party who just acted Hoernle and the time of John McCain's death. So apparrently that I don't want to even mention their name on this show because they are beneath contempt and you really do at the end of the day, you wonder who raised them and what are those people thinking of them now that they would kick around a man in his last twenty four to forty eight hours while he was dying. But speaking of character, I wanted to read you a tweet from General Michael Hayden who talked about John McCain's character and general Hayden and John McCain. We're not on the same. Side on many things. And of course, John McCain especially talked about when we talk about values, he talked about what America should and shouldn't do war. He's talking about waterboarding torture. Of course. We all remember that. We had some crosswords about that ourselves, but General Michael Hayden. Said, while I was at the CIA Senator, John McCain, ripped me a new one on several occasions, but not once. Did he think I shouldn't have a security clearance? Go figure rest in peace, American hero. And I think that's the greatest legacy that here you have some of the most liberal candidates in America right now who represent the far progressive left, remembering John McCain, positively. You have. Michael Hayden and others who John McCain ripta shreds. Because of policy differences coming out, calling him an American hero. This is a man that people loved and respected and admired even after engaging in the toughest of political fights because they knew that it was coming from his heart and not. For cheap. Political gain? Yeah, you have to wonder whether the people down in Arizona, you refer to them obliquely just a moment ago. Some of those people in the White House who have spoken out against John McCain over the course of the.

"You for your strength at a time when this Republic needs at the most. Thank you and make. It's not too late. John mccain. Oh my God. This morning, we remember John McCain is humor. His leadership and his lifetime of service to the United States of America, a country that the Senator said, he learned a love while being a prisoner in another country. Welcome to morning Joe on this Monday, August twenty. Seventh. And we've brought in a lot of people to talk about the legacy and life of Senator John McCain. We've MSNBC contributor Mike barnicle president council in foreign relations. Richard Haass, NBC news, chief foreign affairs correspondent and a host of Andrea Mitchell reports, Andrew Mitchell, Washington anchor for BBC world news America. Katty Kay and historian, and the author of soul of America and Rogers professor of the presence. He'd Vanderbilt University. Jon Meacham meek, morning off willy will also be back later this week and. There's so many Jon Meacham you go through all the paradoxes. All the all the conflicts that are internal, the United States of America and its greatness. And you talk about always arguing towards. Ever upward. And our trajectories civilization, John McCain had some conflicts. He had some contradictions. He had sharp elbows. He had sharp edges and yet in all of my years, dealing with the man. It made me love him even more even when I knew at times when he loaded me, he he was a straight shooter. He spoke his mind and he was exactly what America needed not only in the nineteen sixties in Vietnam, the courage that he showed the extrordinary strength showed, but also the age of Trump a man who just didn't give a damn about an errant tweet from a blustery president because he had already been through hell and back and he could put up with it. Absolutely. He is the Greek said, character is destiny and his character as a young man, both before his captivity and afterward, we're bore those salient elements that you just described. Here's a young man who I think graduated fifth from the bottom of his class at Annapolis. And I think as he wants put it rarely met members of the opposite sex or for minted liquid that he did not enjoy, I think was was one way he framed it. And then he's tempered and shaped in that cauldron of captivity in Vietnam and emerges as at once Reverend about America and irreverent about himself. And that is a powerful combination. And I think that we all benefited from it. He called them as he saw them. He defies easy, ideological categorization at, I think one of the reasons so many people have been so affected by this is we realize that in this tribal moment, we've lost someone who was willing to look at an issue, look at a question and just tell you what he thought damn the consequences. And that's, you know, might offered. Yeah. Certainly did. And Mike, very few would have guessed that. John McCain would have served his country become really the most prominent American public figure of the past fifty years that didn't serve as president from that start that Jon Meacham said he was always filled with surprises. He wasn't considered to be a serious student and you know, he was Pensacola, he went through Pensacola. Everybody had a story about John McCain, crawling onto their porch, the middle of the night and leaving their porch in the early morning while he was in flight training and our time just. But it's so fascinating that he was seen as this party boy. Then he goes to Vietnam. He gets shot down. He's given an opportunity to leave because they find out, oh my God. This this, this, this POW's father is one of the top admiral's will let him go, McCain refuses to go. He stays with his band of brothers while he's getting beaten unmercifully to appoint that, he'll never be able to raise his arms over his shoulders for the rest of his life character that no one saw coming character like we see..

"The powerful backing of American Express don't do business without it. Schivonne another admirable trait. Many point to in talking about John McCain, whether they're Republicans or not, is his willingness to admit mistakes. And that's something he's done publicly several times over the course of his career. This is a guy who's honest with himself and frequently honest with the public. So one of those was when he was coaxed into making a false confession when he was in North Vietnam, it was something he felt terrible about. He was very honest about his failings when it came to the Keating five scandal, that banking intervention, we talked about. He was also to a degree honest about his personal life. His first marriage had failed when he got home from the war he was changed. His first wife was changed. She'd been in a horrible accident that left her unable to walk in the marriage came apart. He apologized for that and then blamed himself for that. He. Also could be open about some of the handwringing that he experienced when it came to the Iraq war. He had voted in favor of the Iraq war, which as we all know was under it into based on faulty information. He had a sense that in supporting the military which he did very strongly. It did put soldiers lives at risk. So there are a lot of instances in which he, you could see him sort of mentally hanging his head in realizing he hadn't lived up to his own standards, although that certainly what he was aiming for a Chaban I wanna talk about one of the last votes McCain made as a Senator, and this was after returning to the Senate against his doctor's advice, and it was to cast a no vote against Republican efforts to repeal the Affordable Care Act. I'm curious for those who cover Washington politics. What was that moment like to see a Republican book his own party, like that guess was an absolutely defining moment, and you could literally feel the electricity in the air from the moment he walked into the Senate floor when he refers. Used to say how he was going to vote to watching him stand in a cluster with Susan Collins at Lisa Murkowski as the entire Republican party looked his way wondering if he was going to bring down one of their stigma charcoals. And then that that down that I conduct thumbs down as Senate majority leader. Mitch McConnell crossed his arms and frowns at him was just a remarkable and defining moment in the Senate and that willingness to defy his own party certainly caught the attention of President. Donald Trump who McCain vocally disagreed with on more than one occasion. Absolutely. I, Donald Trump has been very tough on Senator McCain and Senator McCain gave it right back it. He was not cowed by Donald Trump, which is something very different from how a lot of other Republicans handle the president. Other Republicans would go quiet. Other Republicans have made excuses for Donald Trump. John McCain was having absolutely none of that. And he used many, many opportunities. To come back Donald Trump to accuse him of things like spurious, half-baked nationalism, and to really stand up for the values of a particular wing of the Republican party Schivonne as we remember Senator John McCain, what have you been hearing from colleagues fellow lawmakers on the hill about his legacy. First of all, lawmakers are absolutely crushed. What people feel is that John McCain was one of a kind that his absence leaves a huge void in the Senate, partly because of his moral fortitude on his toughness, partly because he was so much fun. He had an incredible sense of humor. He risked a joke in an environment in which a lot of people are terrified to make jokes because they're afraid of the political consequences. And so it's a loss for his colleagues on so many levels. McCain was also asked a few times how he'd like to be remembered, and I find it so interesting that he chose to people from opposite ends of the political spectrum to deliver his. You'll. Oh, jeez. His one time opponent, former President, Barack Obama and former President, George W Bush in a way making a statement about reaching across the aisle even in death. Absolutely. He was making a statement about bipartisanship and it's worth noting that that was the subject of really his final major speech on the Senate floor. He said, we have to work together..

"I diagnosed in July of twenty seventeen joining us now from Washington to talk about McCain's life and legacy is Wall Street Journal reporter, Chevron Hughes Chevron, as you write in your piece for the Wall Street Journal McCain's life was in many ways a life that defied the odds and there are elements. Certainly, here that have become legendary. He came from a navy family and during the Vietnam war was captured and spent five and a half years in prison, undergoing torture and conditions. Most of us cannot imagine. Can you tell us a little bit about that experience and how it came to share. His views and his life. That experience was one of the defining experiences of his life. It taught him how to rely on other people. He was confined in solitary confinement, and so the way prisoners would communicate with each other was through. They had a special code. They were tapping along the walls. It taught him a lot of moral fortitude. The North Vietnamese knew that his father was a very prominent Admiral and they tried to coax him into early release in McCain refused because he was convinced that it would have been terrible for morale. If someone who was shot down last or later as Ted ended up getting out earlier and cutting in line, it also taught him a lot about torture and the reasons why torture might not be a good idea. And that was a theme that would come up again and again, particularly after September eleventh. And of course, he very vocally opposed towards her and the practice of waterboarding when McCain was freed in nineteen Seventy-three. Soon after returning to the US. Began his life in congress, winning a house seat and in nineteen Eighty-six winning the Senate seat vacated by Barry Goldwater. He had some political setbacks to though including his involvement in the Keating five. Can you tell us about that experience and how it came to shape his politics thereafter, don't experience to me is when he starts seriously. Thinking about the role of money in politics, Charles Keating was a very prominent banker and John McCain among other senators had intervened on behalf of Mr. Keating with federal banking regulators, and it turned out that that perhaps not such a great idea because the Mr. Keating's banking business wasn't stable. It went belly up and ended up costing the government several billion dollars. Although mister Cain was reprimanded for showing poor judgment. He didn't suffer the punishment that some of the other senators had, but it left him filled with enormous shame and it was something that if he even thought about it for a moment. He could be taken back instantly to that second where he felt he had really let the public down. And so what you see later on is him mount very strong effort in favor of campaign finance reform, trying to really think hard about the role of money in politics, getting to another milestone in his life by two thousand. He had launched a bid for the GOP presidential nomination. And this is where we also see his willingness to challenge the ideas of his own party. That bid was ultimately unsuccessful, but in a way, set him up for the next time around in two thousand eight when he challenged Barack Obama. And there are moments during this campaign that people point to as emblematic of McCain's character, particularly in those cases where he defended Obama his opponent against false claims, that Obama was a Muslim and not born in the United States. So there are really two separate campaigns. We're talking about here. One is in two thousand when he was absolutely the under dog. He wrote around in a bus called the straight, talk express. He took hour after hour of questions from reporters. And really cast himself as an authentic open. Tell like it is different type of candidate later on in two thousand eight. He ran what a lot of people considered to be a much more conventional campaign, but there were moments when he really was swimming against the tide. And one of those was when there's a particular video that encapsulates what people mean when they talk about this campaign, someone said that they thought Barack Obama was a Muslim and John McCain in front of the cameras looks at her and says, no, ma'am. No, ma'am. He's just someone who happens to have different views than I have, but he's not a Muslim. And that was just a huge act because it really stood against what a lot of people in the Republican party felt. And even if it cost him the election,.

"Senator John McCain is controversial. Not not in my house I think John, McCain is of course in the news is just taught about he, has been battling A particularly insidious and deadly form of brain cancer for over a year and underscoring just, what an awful diseases, is his family's announcing today that it made the decision to end medical treatment which is a condition, that if you've ever dealt with somebody close to you who said the battle. Cancer inevitably in many cases it. Gets to that point where you just decides that the, treatments aren't working anymore and they're having and it's. Just an adverse impact and there's just nothing more. To be gained, and then you, make that decision and I don't. Know what this means for Senator McCain other than the fact that it's typically a. Decision you make one nears. The end of his life, but you, know the family said we're gonna be discontinuing medical treatment I One of the things that. Candidly I always had an issue I've had a lot of issues during. The two thousand sixteen presidential campaign the some of the things, that then candidate Trump said and and. I will be honest with you. His decision to attack John McCain I understand the John McCain is a source has has been over the, years on a particular issue here or, there has been a source of I. Don't know consternation for for Republicans John McCain's always been, somewhat of a of a maverick and I certainly didn't agree with him on all the things he did by. By no stretch of the imagination but I don't know that I agree with anybody and. All the things that they do but I I remember when when President Trump during the course of the campaign, decided to respond to punch back, go, after Senator McCain by saying well I don't know why everybody refers to him. As a, war hero war hero of course John McCain served several. Years in Vietnamese prisoner of war After having his, plane, shot down and President Trump says to me heroes are the ones that don't. Get shot, down or words that effect I thought, that was disgraceful I just I did and especially I think it would have been stressful for anybody but. Especially disgraceful for somebody like, President Trump who avoided, you know used, various connections and stuff to avoid having to serve in the military himself to. Challenge Senator McCain service I thought it was appalling which isn't to say like I. Said, I understand. There's all sorts of. Political disagreements that are out there and all and I understand that Senator McCain had taken. Positions and wasn't a fan of Donald Trump's vice versa I. Get all that but I thought that was a particularly appalling thing to say and it's it to me it showed that Donald Trump the. Candidate really, had no filter and it's one of the, reasons why I, candidly hope that Donald Trump the president would be able. To restrain some of those those things and unfortunately I think that hasn't worked out that way, but John McCain who I consider at least to be an American hero. And that's that is acknowledging That I think he has been wrong on some issues. He has been obstinate on some issues I consider him to be an American hero and this this news extremely unfortunate but unfortunately at the. Same time, relatively predictable it is interesting to me one, of the questions, matter of fact several people emails about what happened if. At this point in time Given the, dire nascent nature of the, prognosis if Senator McCain. Were to now step down or if he were to. Pass away you know what happens to that seat in the simple answer is that the Republican governor. Of Arizona, gets to appoint a replacement for him that replacement whoever that is chosen would then serve until, the next general election not in Arizona knocked the one. In November but the next one and that would be to, fill out Senator McCain's term so whoever gets appointed would take off his. Pretty much immediately and would be there. For a while interestingly enough it does get complicated if the governor, and the. Governor of, Arizona Republican has said, that he's, he has no interest in. Appointing himself to that. Seat if the, governor of Arizona were to appoint a congressman well then the way The law works if you'd have to have, a special election to fill that congressman seat pretty quickly but if you appointed somebody, other than a congressman of, there wouldn't be an. Elect there wouldn't be an election in Arizona for a. While but it's a little bit complicated but the bottom line. Is for people wondering what happens if. Senator McCain, rather to step down or pass away what happens in the simple answer is you have a, Republican governor Zona who will appoint Senator McCain's replacement who. Will then serve for the foreseeable future until the next scheduled, general election which So that person would be voting for example on if Senator McCain were to, decide that, he was going to step down effective today the governor makes, an appointment next week that person would then be there for the hearings on judge cavenaugh for example so that that's that's. Where all plays into it but you only get too caught up with the politics because again I understand well somewhat controversial figure I think John McCain. Is is a great American I just I just do he was of course the. Republican standard bearer in two thousand eight which was a, year that given the ascendancy of. Barack Obama and the fact that Republicans were coming off you know eight, years of President Bush and the fact. That you know Democrats were completely mobilized to try to do away with any remnants of the Bush administration that that two thousand eight campaign I think we've pretty much probably doomed from, star But I thought he ran think, you ran a strong campaign I think he's been a solid conservative standard bearer again acknowledging some well I, don't know, some decisions that I don't think I would have made like, McCain Feingold campaign finance and things like but John McCain the announcement today that they are no longer going to be providing. Medical treatment for his particularly insidious type of cancer Whatever that means moving forward. You know tough, to say but not good, news I think everybody's prayers should be the Senator McCain and. With his family moving forward all, right when we come, back we're..

"It is the we'd thing against trump he does have that peculiar genius for turning his oppositions a strength against them well that's the interesting thing about the trump administration so far is that some at the strongest and most persuasive an opposition has actually come from his own side and much of it from senator john mccain and and so trump is in the rather strange position of facing opposition from a congress which is actually dominated by his party and a bomber for a long time didn't have that luxury which is why he was he we which is why he was using these executive orders um but i'm not sure that i completely agree with victor actually about this i'm not sure how how wise eta is your however prince pulled uh barrack obama may come across i'm not show that it is a good idea to breach the convention that the retired president shouldn't speak out on matters pertaining to his successor and i think it took you know i know that term rich nixon resigned in ah a degree of two disgrace an but it took a very very long time before he as it were reappeared on the public platform an unnamed exclusively to talk about foreign policy and i sort of thing kate would be more in keeping really if barak obama said a little bit less final thoughts on this earth victory there will of course be enormous demonstrations across the united states against this most of which are spurt donald trump on the republican party will ignore but there they will be more because there has been already significant pushback.

"Uh and it's really incredible this the and a half to disagree with what jeffrey said that this is what people voted for and maybe one americans would want because you might expect these sorts of things from a canon it uh but the job description for a candidate is much different than their job description for president of the united states and at some point you have to wonder what does donald trump view his job as as president because americans typically look to the president in times like this for leadership also although it's our goods are the gift certificate also the worst of the culinary with reporters loria he went after senator john mccain for voting against the repeal and replace of the healthcare senator john mccain someone who's fighting brain cancer right now listen to this he's giving us getting good healthcare that all these attacks and you ain't that same credit to those who perpetrated charlottesville well i don't know i can't tell you i'm sure senator mccain must know what he's talking about but when you say the ultraright defined old right to me you defined as defined as the saint george excuse me what about the old left the came charging at the as you say the old right do they have any semblance of guilt ask you this what about the fact that came charging that they came charging with clubs and a hand swinging clubs do they have any problem i think they do.
