House Dems Delay Voting for Increased Security for SCOTUS Justices

"So right off the bat, protesters have shown up outside the homes of Supreme Court Justices, which is a violation of the law. There are statutes on the books that protect federal judges from that kind of coercion and intimidation and threats. The very presence. How'd you like to have 200 lunatics on your lawn, screaming at you with a bullhorn? Brett Kavanaugh's got young children, Amy Coney Barrett has young children. The left wants this. And if you don't believe me, if you don't believe that the left wants violence, they want threats. They want people being intimidated, senator John cornyn. Had a bill that was unanimously passed by the U.S. Senate. That would increase and enhance security for Supreme Court Justices and their families. Seems pretty bipartisan, right? You want to know what steny Hoyer, steny Hoyer and the Democrats are doing in the house. They're holding it all up. The house Democrats have changed the bill with the express intent of delaying protection for the Supreme Court Justices, whose lives are at risk. I mean, let's not mince words here. We know how violent and crazed these radical activists can be. We saw it. We witnessed

"Not only provides more full-time faculty and restores cuny and Sunni to some levels closer than closer to national averages in terms of faculty student ratios. But also to reverse the continually increasing reliance on tuition. To fund the operations of these public universities as opposed to having the state provide that investment. And when we talk about economic development initiatives, there are the state of New York has given billions of dollars away to in tax breaks to companies who actually would benefit far greater if we continue to improve upon and strengthen our public university system. Companies, including companies like Amazon, they come to New York because there's an abundance of educated and skilled workers that they can draw from. So we should if this is working for us as a state, if it's giving us an economic comparative advantage, this is where we should be investing our funds. So I'm certainly pushing for much more funding for cuny and Sunni in. As you know, Ben in our one house budgets both by the past by the Senate as well as the assembly. We have $1 billion more funding for our public universities. And I'm hoping to adhere as close to that as possible in the final budget..

"Ben max from Gotham gazette a publication of citizen union foundation. Thanks so much for tuning in here to this episode of the show. It is Wednesday, April 6th, 2022, and in just a moment, a conversation with state senator John Liu, a queen's Democrat who is in Albany as we speak, about to give us an update on state budget negotiations, the state budget, of course, is about 6 days late at this point. We are now 6 days into the new state fiscal year. A few days into the state fiscal year, the legislature passed what's called a budget extender allowing the state to continue to pay its bills, including its payroll of state employees, although there was a little bit of choppy waters there, and it's unclear how many people's paychecks might have been disrupted because even that was late. But they are now in the final negotiations among the democratic majority in the state Senate, the democratic majority in the state assembly and democratic governor Kathy hochul, trying to lock down this new state budget deal, which will have roughly $220 billion in spending and a whole bunch of policy involved. There are all sorts of issues, of course, with the process here, all kinds of problems with how little public review, a lot of the final details we'll get, how little legislative review a lot of the final details will get as this budget is going to be passed sometime in the next few days, most likely, they have to come to agreement on the broad principles on some outstanding items and then of course right up all the budget bills and then get those printed a little bit of time for legislators to review and then vote on them. Whatever deal is struck is all but certain to be passed and they will probably use messages of necessity from the governor, which allow them to waive the otherwise mandated review period for legislation. Again, all sorts of problems with the process that we've discussed here on this show in recent weeks actually as I've been joined previously by state senator Gustavo Rivera, a Democrat of The Bronx, state Senate minority leader rob ord and upstate Republican. And others to discuss that and what's happening with the state budget. But here's my conversation with state senator John Liu about the very latest at least as of roughly 5 p.m. on Wednesday, April 6th in a very fluid situation, but a bunch of insights coming up here from John Lou. All right, let's bring on state senator John Liu, a Democrat from queens..

Biden to Provide Funding for ‘Crack Pipe Distribution’

"Regarding Joe Biden, planning to offer funding for drug addicts, including the use of crack pipes. Senator John Kennedy had a couple things to say about it. Right now, President Biden's policy is this. If you are a Nigerian doctor, or a German machinist, who wants to come to America, you have to be vetted for years. But if you're some gang banger drug dealer who just hops the fence at the border, you're welcome. And we'll fly you anywhere you want in America. Now that's just bone deep down to the marrow stupid. And I'm all for helping people with drug addiction. But the way the deal with it, number one is just to secure the border. Will it completely solve the problem? No, but it'll do a lot more than safe crack pipes.

How Do Congressional Representatives' Stocks Perform in Relation to the General Market?

"Let's say you're a congressman or a senator and you're part of a team that is negotiating with pharmaceutical companies about how many vaccines, the government is going to purchase or vaccine pricing and at the same time while you're doing this, you are also investing yourself and benefiting from shifts in the stock price of pharmaceutical companies. I mean, should this even be allowed? Now Nancy Pelosi says yes. She says, and in fact, she is, I can see why she says yes. She's known to be the most successful stock picker on the hill. Not because of her having gone to business school, not because of her wide experience and understanding how the stock market works none of that. It's because and this is true not just of Pelosi, I have to say, but it's true of a lot of people in Congress. They have access to information. Why? Because the government has its tentacles and everything in so many industries from gas to energy to manufacturing and high-tech. And of course, to pharmaceuticals is an interesting report in on a website called unusual whales dot com. Well researched, it goes into all the stock trades that these congressmen centers have been doing over the past year. In fact, throughout essentially the year 2021. And its Republicans and Democrats and we're talking about pretty large numbers. Representative Susan del Ben, the ELB EME, her family, sold $25 million of Microsoft in September and October in the Senate, Bill hagerty sold $5 million of the tech company data dog. Senator John hickenlooper sold millions in tech stocks, Amazon, Apple Google. Now remember the government deals with these entities. That's the point we're trying to get at. And the point is how will these congressmen and senators doing with their stock trades? Here is where things get really interesting. It turns out that in 2021, Congress, pretty cleanly, beat the market. Now it's really hard to meet the market. You've got even professional hedge funds. A lot of them don't beat the market. And so the only way to consistently beat the market is to know something that the ordinary investor in the market doesn't

"No joy Reid had a blog. 2007, 2008, 2009, before she became a hostel innocent behead. And in her blog, she made a number of posts smearing, mocking, attacking, gaze. She implied that Tom Cruise was gay. Karl rove. She said was gay. The then senator of Florida. Chris Christie. Charlie Christie. Charlie Chris weaver. She's called him miss Charlie, miss charley, stop pretending brother, it's okay, you don't go for the ladies. And another one she wrote, now he's married to a girl, Charlie Chris is being sought for all kinds of good stuff. Quote, I can just see poor Charlie on the honeymoon, ogling the male waiters and taking to himself, God, do I actually have to see her naked? It included a joke with Chris having sex with senator John McCain? She implied that chief justice John Roberts son is gay. She also said this, quote, most straight people cringe at the sight of two men kissing. She also said quote, adult gay men tend to be attracted to very young post pubescent types. And in one post, she said, quote, does that make me homophobic? Probably close quote. Now these posts emerged after she got a job as a host on MSNBC. And guess what, she denied making them. She said she'd been hacked. She was a victim of a homophobic hate crime. NBC hired a forensic specialist to determine whether or not she'd been hacked. She wasn't. She lied. And later on, she acknowledged she'd posted them.

"Is their right. It is their duty to throw off such government and to provide new gods for their future security. Such has been the patient. Sufferance of these colonies and such is now the necessity which constrains them to all their former systems of government. The history of the president king of great britain is a history of repeated injuries and usurpation all having indirect object the establishment of an absolute tyranny over these states to prove this let facts be submitted to a candidate world. He has refused his assent to laws. The most wholesome unnecessary for the public good. He has forbidden his governors to pass laws of immediate impressing importance unless suspended in their operation. Deal here's a. Sam should be obtained and when so suspended. He has utterly neglected to attend to them. He has refused to pass other laws for the accommodation of large districts of people unless those people would relinquish their right of representation in the legislature a write in estimable to them and formidable to tyrants only he has called together legislative body that places unusual uncomfortable and distant from the depository of their public records for the sole purpose fatiguing them into compliance with his measures. He has dissolved representative houses. Repeatedly for opposing with manly firmness is invasions on the rights of the people. He has refused for a long time. After such disillusioned to cause others to be elected whereby the legislative power incapable of annihilation have returned to the people at large for their exercise. The state remaining in the meantime exposed to all the dangers of invasion from without and convulsions. With him he has endeavoured to prevent the population of the state for that purpose obstructing the laws for naturalization of foreigners refusing to pass others to encourage their migrations hitter and raising the condition of new appropriation of lamb. He has obstructed the administration of justice by refusing his assent the laws for establishing judiciary powers. He has made judges dependent on his will alone for the tenure of their offices and the amount and payment of their salaries he had erected a multitude of new offices and then hit us swath of offices to harass people and eat out there substance. He has kept among us. In times of peace standing armies without the consent of our legislatures he has affected to render the military independent of and superior to the civil power he has combined with others to subject us to a jurisdiction foreign to our constitution and unacknowledged bylaws giving his assent to their acts of pretended legislation for quartering lodge bodies of armed troops among us for protecting them by a mock trial from punishment for any murders which they should commit on the inhabitants of these states. Cutting off trade with all parts of the world for imposing taxes on us without our consent for depriving us in many cases of the benefits of trial by jury for transporting us beyond seas to be tried for pretended offensive for abolishing.

"The woman president biden has chosen to lead much of his ambitious climate agenda on. Us public lands appear before the senate today for her confirmation hearing montana environmentalist tracy stone manning has been tapped to be the next director of the bureau of land management it controls energy development and other activities on a tenth of all the land in the us. Here's npr's kirk siegler as montana's former top environmental regulator and chief of staff for that state's former democratic governor tracy stone. Manning did develop a reputation for bipartisan. Dealmaking which she repeatedly referenced in her first appearance before the us senate. I think that my career has shown that the only way to get things done in the country and specifically in the west is to work together stonings nomination marks a dramatic reversal from the agency's previous director. William perry penalty who hailed from rural wyoming in once suggested the. Us government shouldn't even own public land. She's from a liberal pocket of montana and more reflective of who's been gaining power and influence and much of the west lately people from cities. New mexico's martin. Heinrich is a senior democrat on the committee. The trump administration pulled penalties nomination before it could question him. Last year has been without a confirmed director for good reason in some cases for almost four and a half years that should not continue one day longer. Republicans though seize the opportunity to grill stone manning about president biden's freeze on new oil and gas leasing on public lands. They also argued her campaigning. Last year and a half of democrats was evidence. She's a polarizing pick. She shot back urging the committee to examine her entire career of brokering compromises. She said unheeded. Public land's battles elections can be tough. I was supporting my former boss. Governor bullock but the election is over and i will honor the outcome of that election but the ranking republican on the committee wyoming senator john barrosso said stone manning's recent tweets reveal a bias against energy companies. Ranchers loggers based on her record. I'm concerned the miss stone. Manning does not fill the bill. Her career has been defined by her support for policies that restrict multiple use activities on public lands and upper down vote on stone manning's nomination is expected in the coming days within need go before the full senate

"Experience of you know at often you heard the debate about I can't do it all online. So much of a college education is the interpersonal relationships you develop with you. And your. Wife whether you're so clubs, sororities fraternities in a classroom. I think those that networking opportunities certainly was. An enormous contributor to any. Ling that I was able to do after I got out of college because you meet people who are also ambitious and. Their. Diverse verse in. A A. number of respects, their diverse from location diverse by race just a real enriching life experience to go. To College and I think if you try to do it all online I'm certainly wouldn't have much of a football crowd. Isn't that the truth? But I I think right now, the colleges and universities are pretty much struggling because of the budget crisis. As. So if they have to do this thing online and they can't charge regular tuition that will put a huge problem that will create a huge problem in their ability to Mike because their budgets work. So tuition is a major driver in terms of their financial wellbeing and get a Lotta money from state if states or not nearly as much as they used to. So I think that's the biggest challenge is trying to figure out how you can make this work that you can deliver a Quality Education Bravo in same time figure out whether amateur do the Internet. Much person. Trying to make that mix and that's why I think. The development of a vaccine. So, important. As we move tickly into twenty twenty, one relative to economic recovery in our ability to once again socialize network it's been. This has been a tough year twenty, twenty, I saw. Option the other day. That had Stephen King's book for his latest Mystery Thriller was called Twenty Twenty. His latest are removing. It has been it has been one for the ages that's for sure and it just seems like You know just when we kinda get used to one thing it just a something something else flares up and it has been odd to say the least and I tell you one of the things. This is one of the I really was wanted to kind of kick around with you because you have you have had You've had such experiences so many different levels of the private sector, the public sector as a legislator and your route routes run you know five generations deep here the lone star state, and one of the things already that was happening was we were seeing a major influx into Texas I. think it was like fifteen hundred people a day before the pandemic, and now people are escaping these larger metropolitan areas due to some of the unrest and other things. How do we as you see it? Adapt as a state and get ready because I know. One of the places where you spend a lot of time Austin, it seems like every body I talked to that lives out in Silicon Valley and if somewhere out west. They're moving to Austin Texas in Austin Texas already outgrown itself years ago. What do you see happening for the lone star State and where and in our place in the grand scheme of things senator as we go forward. Texas has Through a lot of. A lot of legislative reforms.

I do consider Bill Hobby to have been one of my mentors but. we don't have enough time for me to tell bull. Will tell you one when I was chairman of finance he had a phone. We met over the annex as a pretty large committee room yet a phone he put on my head installed on my desk. Out in the committee always called it the read. It anyway was right there. So I remember one day I get a call from England. He was pretty irate because of budget wasn't moving as expeditiously as he thought, he said what? What is the hold up I won't say the experts but I Say What a world hold up on the budget were both. We have twenty, nine us with the House we were in conference committee. And Twenty eight are your. So he told me the story about him because he's been on the the State Cemetery commission. For years and years, and for the listener if you are at the cemetery, you can see the flag at a from the capital all the way from the cemetery and that was that was Bob Bullock's doing. He wanted to make sure you could see the flag from the capital. All the way from the state cemetery is just stories like that little little touches that are in the capital. All the way to the state cemetery, and then things that happen that people will never know about for the good of Texas by the way I say that in a positive way, Bob Bullock was he made things happen that's for sure that he took a discussion about that one day because Jimbo at will I? Think it was had a marco there said here lies the author of tax bill. Bullock said adding said, you ought to get a plot at the State Cemetery Monteverdi said you and your wife can be buried there and he said said, we'll be setting up that telling stories over some of. You know personally as much for the audience and is. Whenever you're because you mentioned something they're like basically set out your non-negotiables from the beginning to figure out the that what that floor is just can't drop below. Whenever you and I know you've had been in a position. To where you hit that floor in an appreciation. have. You learned throughout your career that it's better to go with your head. But then whenever I find myself there I'm like well, my about to just cut my nose off to spot my face. What would you say John? Is it your head or your gut it? How do you sort it out during those times? Well assuming a thorough people a lot smarter than I am. There are lots most people are probably smarter than I. Am I I think I, rely on my good. "It just from a perception when I was I looked a little young to be district attorney. I. had campaigned hard ahead a good organization. But. a lot of time I think the thing I learned most is for people to vote for you. They really have to identify with you. And you have to be. We're convincing that they can trust you and believe in you believe what you're doing. And So it was an important lesson of there's nothing quite like losing an election. It's one of the lows dislike whining. One of the high. Hyphen. Absolutely. I figure everybody needs to lose at least one election to really get. A baptism into life right I agree I agree it is an incredible experience. Well and you know you say something there John that reminds me I just I'm reading a book right now by guiding Simon Sinek Beria. Popular. Author. Speaker and consultant. and. He wrote this book Start With Y. And you touched on something I think that you probably in in that that race people have to trust you. They have to know not what you're GonNa do so much y you're doing it I think that's one of the things that a lot of political leaders business leaders. Product. Developers they miss you know. Senate he created what's called the the Golden Circle which on the furthest outside is like what we do and then inside, it's how we do it but at the core of it is why we do it in. So you mentioning that made me think. His philosophy on that. How going forward and because I know that as you went through your career, you you took on some things that were very tough positions for the state of Texas to try to convince Texans that things you know certain things in the gaming industry and that sort of thing. So that would follow you. So what disciplines did you start to? Implement, to scale that trust and help people understand the why of what you were doing? I think to some when you approach public office and you serve in public office, I firmly believe you have to have sort of business plan going in what you want to accomplish what you intend to do while you WanNa do it I think of all if I look back on all my careers I think I've had about fifteen. A. Lot of people say I can't hold a job. All been rewarding and exciting I just feel so blessed but I think networking is probably yet no one term that would sum up certainly your ability to succeed in politics. Now, politics is radically changed since Iran for DA and since I ran for the Senate. It is social media blitz. Now, it's quite different There are no secrets. Lecture they ask me said Hey. It was a graduate class. In business school and they said Hey tell us how how we can be successful how we can get to be sweet how we can be. Corporate CEO say well, two things don't get a Dwi don't get hooked on prescription drugs and. They were they were kind of stunned. But I said you know we'll see. "Good Morning New York. This is the cats roundtable John Katzman. PD's here Sunday morning. What's going on in New York City? What's going on in New York state was this morning? He's the minority leader of the New York. State Senate Senator John Flanagan. Good Morning Senator. How are you this morning? I am doing very well. I'm always happy to agree on his show. Thanks for having me. There are so many problems that people are worried about in Albany. There's the bail reform. Then there's there's the the new laws they passed about real estate and there's a lot of developers leaving town more jobs jobs really. There's rumors that the budgets would be six billion dollars short. Where do you WANNA start? Well I'm GONNA start with. Thank you but also recognizing nizing what we're really confronting. It's one party rule. The disaster one party rule in the state governors have lane the Senate Democrats the Assembly Democrats their priorities. Way Out of whack with the average person whether your health from the city of New York or any other part of the state. So I think it's been an unmitigated. Disaster them in charge and unlike two thousand eighteen then now have to run a record where more people leaving the state than ever before we have a massive deficit this year which is going to grow in the out us. So I'm I'm trying to send a message of hope against the backdrop of all the things that the Democrats have done the bail issue and a criminal justice reforms as their cats to are terrible terrible things for our law enforcement personnel for our first responders for DA's so we're staring down to bat barrel of a disaster again. AH WITH ONE party rule. I blame all of them including the governor. Now I had A. I had a speaker of the assembly. Mr Hasty On a Wednesday show and he felt he did the right thing on bail reform. I agreed with him. Poor people should not not stay in jail longer. But there's better answers like it's more speedy trials. What say you? I say that there was a lack of information sought from from all the people who would actually be administering law. There were never real public hearings this was enacted as part of the New York state budget. which is the last place where it should have been enacted? They never talk doc victims and never talk to not for profit would be affected by all these things so I completely and very strongly disagree with the speaker. I believe there should be reformed. I believe leaving. There should be no distinction between rich and poor. But if you're a murderer or rapist or you're an arsonist. It doesn't matter whether you're rich or poor. The preeminent concern has has to be public safety than not talking about that and there are very egregious examples since January first including somebody being killed online. Just just a couple of days ago. We thought this would happen. Didn't want to see it happen. But we're seeing the manifestation of a very bad law in its implementation. The other thing is happening a lot of real estate people are up in arms because of the laws that already passed a few real estate developers. Developers are so fed up with what the city council voted in New York City besides What the State Senate in Assembly did off Albany? Is there any hope that you could flip back to the state Senate back to a moderate Democrats. Moderate Republicans well. If I didn't think there was any hope I wouldn't be doing doing. I wouldn't be running for reelection. I wouldn't do everything possible with my colleagues to recruit good candidates so I always look at the glass as being half F O. We need to have a philosophy. We need to have an agenda that people can embrace. I couldn't agree with you. More the real estate community. Who is a major major economic? Mackenzie not only here in the city of New York but of course state of New York they were bludgeoned bludgeoned by the Democrats affordable housing as we know it was challenging enough affordable notable housing is gone. Let me repeat. It's got not only in the city of New York. But all across the state of New York the policies were enacted were one dimensional. They didn't take into a whole variety of factors and John. You're absolutely right. There are developers who are packing up and leaving and even those who are staying are not willing to take the risk that they were willing take before. Because there's no incentive and in fact they're being Ellie trivialized marginalized it being punished for being actively engaged in trying to develop ELP real estate in any part of the state of New York We had to state controller on a few weeks ago calmed Napoli that Fears that we are close to a six billion dollar shortfall in our budget. What say you I say the controllers right? He is the keeper of the Public Fisk. And he's doing very job he has to send out these dire warnings for people who pay attention. Yes there's six billion dollar deficit. It looks worse in the out years unless unless changes are made I think this is a reflection of again misplaced priorities by the Democrats and the single biggest component within that six billion dollars is Medicaid. Not recognizing the ballooning costs Medicaid including the effects of the implementation of minimum wage. which is good in some respects? But he's been very negative in its effect not only here in the city of New York but again across state. Unfortunately I do agree with the control. I wish it were to the contrary but there have to be very strong steps. Taken and all the Democrats are talking about is how to raise taxes with hundreds of thousands of people living leaving the state of New York. The last thing people should be doing is talking about raising taxes taxes. But that's exactly what the Democrats are talking about bad for the public bad for the state of your great for other states outside of the state of New York who are not only trying to attract actor businesses and people but people are fleeing outside the boards of New York. What else you WanNa tell? The New Yorkers I think people have to pay very close attention and what happens in Albany with everything that's going on in Washington and it has a tendency to suck all the air out of the room but real hard issues here in New York. There are efforts of foot right by the Democrats again to raise taxes to blow out spending in the state of New York to move social policies. That are GONNA make -Nificant New York much more difficult place place to live work and grow your family. I I really implore people to be holding the feet of their elected officials to the fire. Republicans and Democrats but in this case the Democrats profligate spending not listening to the tax payers not listening to the people who are actually living here in New York who want to keep their family here and have good healthy place to live. I'm very concerned to that. On the criminal justice piece our quality of life is eroding. That's why we had to be even even more vigilant. Not only in our governmental policy but as we look towards the campaigns. That'll be coming. As the year progresses Senator John Flanagan thank you minority leader of the State State Senate. Thank you for coming on shows Sunday morning. And let's catch up again real soon. Thank you very much. This is the cats roundtable. We'll be right back..

"Good Morning New York. This is the catch table John Cats. Td's here Sunday morning what's going on what's going on in Albany would is today as minority leader of the state. Senate John Flanagan Good Morning Senator Flanagan. How are you doing very well? John Always Nice to be with you on good Sunday Sunday morning. And thank you so much rap. Well I'm glad you're with US and You know ever since there's a super majority looks like of Democrats in orbiting passing all these new rules businessmen have take extra aspirin And a a lot of them saying well Muslim moved to Florida. Now you guys the the when the Senate Republicans had a majority already along with the Independent Democrats together. You added a balance of power. You added a Luba Sanity. What's going on? Where's the sanity? These days Chattanooga is non-existent at all and we are seeing the absolute Realize liked application of one party rule. The governor is to blame the Senate Democrats simply Democrats none of the skates responsibility. They won the election last year. And they you know they get credit were done but I think they are destroying the state of New York not only in a criminal justice way. Social Policies well economic development is joke it's laughable label in terms of what's being done. We have the most sweeping rent control law that one could possibly imagine. I don't know anyone who has property would like contingent invest in real estate so there are significant ramifications in terms of taxes and driving people out of your it was tough already driving people out of New York but I don't want to just pay a negative picture. I still think we have tremendous opportunities but you know the Democrats campaign and now the governing governing you have to be held accountable for the actions taken and they are not represented interested the taxpayers and not representative interest a bit class chapter verse. Unfortunately I give you chapter and verse it Very Big Way. Well you know I is a businessman. We were in the real estate development business and we must have spent a ton on a money of a billion dollars over the last three or four years and The fact is With all these new regulations I put things on hold on most. Is there any hope to compromise. The simple thing is we have an Alexa Alexa next to their past election day. This week next year is critical not only nationally but here at the state of New York so my job is to help recruit candidates. My job is to help raise money with my colleagues and deliver a proud coherent concise message that represents real people don't kill you with regulations relations. Don't kill you a taxes. Don't kill you with burdens that make you WANNA pick up and roof stadium. York gives you a ray of hope on criminal justice on things like that Berkshire that the Pentagon that really swung wickedly and far left this year contract and I still think we have a very Sean Chancellor John you're a Daihatsu. I want you to stay. I've lived my entire life and I still not living empire state but we have to have significant change. The Democrats have to be held accountable accountable for their disastrous public policies. And my for all kinds of different all kinds of different things he. MTA suggestion pricing again. how academic development. That doesn't recognize anything here. He talked about. We have a statewide approach. You haven't ta capital plans. They only speaks to the city of New York. There's not whatever craft talking about Long Island or they'd huts where the downstate region or western New York or the north country. That's bad that is bad way to approach this. They should not be at the city centric venture. I love the city but it should be the only consideration. Democrats one party rule is demonstrating. The air policy are way way different than the average taxpayer. The other thing that all New York is not just business people are panicking about is the police are upset that Nobody's going to be able to get arrested. Everybody's going to get whatever they call it a CB the Ticket So you can rob a store in the morning. It'd be out before the cops finish making up the The arrest just record and Robin screw store. In the afternoon you unfortunately couldn't be any more correct the policies it were an active we're done in. Hasten haste makes sways there were plenty of discussions about things like raise the age. You're out after much much much. Deliberation the policies that came forward from the Democrats that's totally totally undermine law enforcement totally undermine our district attorney's at our police officers and it sends an awful message to the public that it's the criminals who are getting the right and the victims are not being properly paid attention to Senator Galveston Centers Reno colleagues my all across state. We are really going on hammering necessarily people you know right now is committed. Domestic Violence Acura affects act. You may not have bail unless it's something something like a murder you're not gonNA be happy bail. There are so many negative things and they didn't for one second. Listen to real people. They didn't listen to the district attorney's they listen to the police and a lack of respect is being demonstrated in the city of New York and outside for who people put their lives on the line. Every single take for you. If they think it's horrific and out again we will be delivering that message and we want to foster an agenda and created a jet honor. Give us some hope. Give give give New Yorkers some hope that that rational thinking US combat I will yeah. I'll give you hope we'd have to as I said we need to get our message out there. We need to get the public behind us. And I believe that the public is finally shaped what the Democrats and by the way. The scary part is they're going to go much. Further less next year is watch part because many of the facing primaries because some that don't think that they're radical enough so that's it's going to make things more challenging but it's going to give us opportunities to really paint a contrast in terms of who we are what we stand for why we are in line with the taxpayers tax payers in the middle class average far work citizen and they are not understood. Senator John Flanagan thank you for coming on. We're out of time and thank you for loving snow. What's going on in our state in the and giving us hope that things will get back to rationale all right terrific? Thank you so much thank you. This is the catch roundtable. We write back..

"Seven counts one count of obstruction five counts of making false statements one count of witness tampering. Yeah. That is CNN who just happened to have a camera on the scene of the arrest. Roger stone arrested in indicted this morning at six AM. He's an advisor to the president. But he was immediately after the president declared exit out he was on the outside arrested in Fort Lauderdale this morning. He was indicted on allegations. He lied and obstructed the house intelligence committee's investigation of Russian interference in the twenty sixteen election. I'll bring you the latest and back we asked Jonathan Turley to join us, and he will Catherine Herridge is over the story and she'll follow at the bottom of the hour. Senator John Cornyn to better guest to talk to a in a short term over the two big stories in this country first off on his arrest. What do they say? Then the documents they say that stone was. Conspiring with quickey links the indictments is not charge. This was conspired with WikiLeaks. But it seems to indicate that he knew about the hacks. It also says the Trump aide charged in the mullahs probe had had multiple contacts between Trump associates and Russia during the campaign. So we'll see what they say that Roger stone new. They also said that he lied to congress obstructed Justice. And you know, that he also say conspired to tell somebody else. To not tell the truth to the special counsel. I'm also wondering is it necessary to have a big raid was a necessary to get Well, Paul Manafort outta bed wasn't necessary. As Roger stone, a bike risk couldn't you've said, can you report to the courtroom and made sure he showed? But what does it mean for the whole investigation, Dan Abrahams on ABC cut one? This is the first indictment where it becomes clear that the special counsel believes that the Trump campaign knew about the hacks before this material was made public and remember they're one of the key charges in this case, so far is of the Russians engaged in the hacks, and this is related to WikiLeaks and the key phrases. I think from this indictment are that a senior Trump official was directed to contact stone about additional releases and about future was allies. Yeah. So we're still speculating, but this is a Trump I wouldn't say adviser, but he's a longtime friend. He was the one who always urging him to get in. But almost immediately after Trump declared next thing, you know, Dan, Abrahams as Dan Abrahams said stone was there, but he was never on scene. I mean, he wasn't in Trump Tower. He was talking to the president. But he wasn't part of the campaign. The question is the tech. I think they're talking about your own Coursey. Did they tell you? Did he tell Drome Coursey not to tell the truth the to coverage tracks? Did you not tell the truth to investigators? Keep in mind to off people are still speculating, but I think the Trump campaign's gotta worry as Rudy Giuliani said maybe craftily over the weekend. And last week. The president in collude, but he's not saying that anybody else in and around the president did that's a lot different than we thought a year ago. But true the dissemination matters Joe Lockhart says this cut five Roger stone is the person who is at ground zero of Donald Trump's political career. He's the guy who planted the idea you can be president of the United States. And my guess is is a very small circle of people who could be the one that we're talking about here who did Rogers and Donald Trump is in that circle. Wilsey was he directing Roger stone where they're getting the heads up. You know, there's a heads up on something's coming down. Whether it's a s an opponent's divorce and allegations that are coming through. You have no obligation to go forward and say, this is what's happening. And this is what's going to be taking place. But what I do say what bothers me about the whole Trump all the Trump people that we had nothing to do with Russia. If the president came out early says I had nothing to do with Russia. But I have no idea. What all these other people were doing I just know that Hillary Clinton was using a private server, it made herself vulnerable and Podesta got caught in a fishing expedition. And when he did that these emails became public, and it hurt the campaign, but it didn't mean these emails were illegitimate. It didn't mean they were made up. This is really was going on. This is what Sanders thought this is Debbie Wasserman Schultz found out. This is what Hillary Clinton was doing. We want the other big story. And I want to take too much time away from Jonathan Turley hill break it down from the legal perspective was day thirty five now the shutdown. I don't see any leverage for the president. And I think it's unjust. I think the prisoner box himself in the middle of December. I think he's one hundred percent, right. We need money for wall. I think he's one hundred percent right to listen to the experts and say, you don't need a big cement wall. You need slats in certain areas, you need improvements in others and other areas, you need just technology. But Nancy Pelosi says, okay, I'm not dealing at all I'm gonna pretend zip. I didn't vote twice before for fencing across the border to pretend that the president isn't giving me wiggle room. I'm gonna pretend that the opera out. There did not involve DACA, which you said you go to bat for on a daily basis. So they were two boats yesterday in the Senate, and it's clear both didn't pass weren't expected to pass. But clearly, evidently, reportedly promote people sources axios to the hill behind the scenes. The Republicans are getting restless, they they basically lead vice president Pence have it and Mitch McConnell habit. Why did you box in here? These innocent people can't work this. The speaker of the house is gotten all the leverage on justifiably where is the way out here. Here's the president from the Oval Office cut eighteen. You need the wall. We can all play games. And we can all talk about technology. I know more about technology than anybody. You don't have the wall. The technology does the work you need to walk. A lot of the technology is put on top of the wall. That's how you see the cameras and everything else. I mean, they literally put the technology. They fascinated to the wall, then you have drone technology. So meanwhile, Nancy posts, he's just not budging. And I think the thing that's going to make her move is if Democrats who got in this job who won their house seats in in red districts are going to rise up and say, we really look petty. This is nothing to do with us. It's about you cut twenty one. This shutdown is not a glitch. It is a crisis that the president alone created and at the president alone can end Republicans in congress have been accomplices to the president's irresponsibility and just a Norring the consequences of his action either. He doesn't know he doesn't care. No. It's you you don't care. You don't care about funding the border, you don't care about the border security. There's legitimate crisis happening. We see the families coming across. We see the drugs coming through. We know it's through the most of the port of entry. But the wall the barrier allows you to funnel it in a certain area provide additional technology there, she's pretending as if there is no debate. She does not sit down and to give and take with anybody that wants answers. She just sits down with people that want to kiss her bought Mercedes slap says the president's not giving in but has to consider other options cut thirty. It's clear that congress. We're not getting to a solution there. So yes, the president is seriously considering other options that includes declaring a national emergency. Obviously he's looking into these legal options that is something he can do. And what is so troubling is the fact is yes, he's been able to keep the Republicans unified in the Senate. Obviously we needed the sixty votes mansion came through. But no other. What is? Lost some Republicans. Listen is a crisis time on all sides in Washington. I think the president's right here. I just don't know where his leverage is. How does he get it? Let me know one eight six six eight seven six six nine the Russia investigation. First indictment in months, it happened to Roger stone the closest yet to the president United States. Don't tell me Matt aboard anything to do with it. Or all these oligarchs have any role in it. This is the guy that could cause trouble. What is Jonathan Turley think? And not think back in a moment with expert, then Senator John Cornyn big day. Don't move giving. You everything you need to know is Brian Kilmeade. No. Now, the three big things you need three three. It is over after thirty five days. The house has passed a measure that has now been signed by the president to reopen. The federal government for three weeks while border security funding is figured out ending the longest government shutdown in US history. Eight months after catching fire in the middle of a parade. Disney's mullets float has returned to the magic kingdom. Blunt indictment earlier today, former Donald Trump adviser Roger stone's seems to have lost the support from one his heroes. Former president Richard Nixon, the Nixon foundation tweeting out today this morning's widely circulated characterization of Roger stone as a Nixon campaign aide or adviser is a gross misstatement. The shutdown is over. I will sign a Bill to open our government for three weeks until February fifteenth in first thing Monday morning for the very latest on long-term deal negotiations, and what it means to you. "Responsibility are flying. And the prospects of finding a quick solution to the crisis or of coming together to pass significant legislation when it ends remain grim now with Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell, making his first significant legislative overture to break, the stalemate Sunday, the outcome might rest on the capacity of house speaker Nancy Pelosi, and Mr. McConnell to find a way to bridge the political divide between them their parties and the White House, but as congressional reporter Emily Cochran at the New York Times says their new relationship is not off to a good start. So the two of them, obviously, different backgrounds. Sides of the ideological spectrum. And they've often found the belts on opposite sides of several issues in the shutdown is the latest one day worked on different side of congress, obviously in different ideological sides. For decades, they have a working relationship, but it hasn't always gone. Well. That was interesting to read to in your piece that you said they have actually accomplished stuff before. Sometimes it's hard to remember that one day they get bogged down in the in things like this shutdown. Almost two decades ago they were both top members on their respective appropriations committee, and they work together on spending bolster foreign operations. Then another infant has an eight when congress associated the economic recovery package McConnell called her quote extraordinary. She was equally complimentary of his leadership, then but in recent years, they've certainly gone head-to-head speaker Pelosi with not very complimentary of the tax overhaul that just went through and later McConnell had issues with the Affordable Care Act when it was first introduced and several other parts of the democratic agenda when President Barack Obama was an office and later Pelosi. In charge about. So do these two generally dislike each other is this just politics? I think it's hard to say they they have a working relationship. They just happened to consistently end up on opposite sides of the issue. It's also worth noting. They tend to work with the other litter there, for example, speaker Pelosi spend more time working with Senator Chuck Schumer her democratic counterpart in the Senate and Kevin McCarthy who's the Republican leader in the house? But this time they're both leaders of their respective chamber. So it remains to be seen how they work together looking forward speak with Emily Cochran congressional reporter at the New York Times. She's got a piece called McConnell and Pelosi heavy fraught relationship, the shutdown hasn't helped anybody expecting that things will improve relationship wise. So that things can get done over the next two years that the question we've asked as reporters on Capitol Hill many times. In the last few weeks, and it's unclear. What what's next the first step is to get through the shutdown to end this impact? And even with the new proposal from the president from leader McConnell Pelosi is again going to introduce a Bill to reopen. The government herself this week. It remains fifty what is actually going to get through. And until that happens. Everything else is kind of at a standstill boy what about something like infrastructure, which people from both parties have expressed at least in some way, shape or form some interest remained abusing. But lawmakers are hopeful about they nonpartisan issue we need the public works overhaul. But again without a clear way out of the shutdown. They can't really get started working on it and going this long without any kind of compromise on reopening. The government doesn't bode well for any kind of compromise going forward. So there remained some optimism. But we'll have to see how the shutdown in coded Senator John Cornyn from Texas at the very tail into your story. He said, we'll figure something out. We always do don't seem very close at this point. That's the kind of optimism we asked about an infrastructure Bill or some of the legislative priority. Take on for example, the new North American trade deal or raising the federal spending limits or a plan to lower drug prices. There's still hope that something will get done with the shutdown. It's still unclear how exactly we're going to get out of that. But they haven't quite given up yet. Emily, emily.
