U.S. Senators Seek Sanctions Against Honduran President

"Year, thousands of people from Honduras come north to the U. S Mexico border and then into this country because of poverty and violence at home. The Bible administration says it wants to get to the root of the problem so Hondurans can build better lives there. But it turns out the root of the problem may lie inside the hunter and government. Now Democratic senators want to put sanctions on Hunter and president one Orlando or non Dez for alleged human rights abuses in corruption. Reporter James Fredrick is in Mexico City, and he's been following this story. Hey, James. Hey, how you doing? Good. What would these propose sanctions do? So this bill was introduced by Senator Jeff Merkley of organ and other you know, kind of progressive leaning Democrats, and it basically starts by saying President Juan Orlando Hernandez is under investigation by the U. S. For allegedly accepting bribes from an aging drug traffickers. So that's where it starts. And then it lays out this whole list of crimes that Hernandez and his party has been responsible for since the 2009 coup in Honduras. Corruption, embezzlement and then violence against its own population. Protesters, journalists activists, freedom of speech has been really clamped down there. Most importantly, the bill says the U. S. Has been complicity in this because we have been an ally of this government of for a long time, and it says that if we want to address these root causes Of migration from Honduras. We have to do this so these sanctions would freeze Hernandez's U. S visa freeze his assets and it would ban the U. S from exporting things like firearms, tear gas and other things to the 100 government. What's going on inside of the country that is making so many people feel like they have no choice but to leave. There's just a general sense of fear and desperation. Fear comes from street gangs that extort and murder people. It will, but it also is fear of the police and the 100 military Hondurans don't feel like they have anywhere to turn for protection. And in desperation is poverty. Hernandez is accused of embezzling lots of aid money towards Honduras. And so that's money that didn't go to poor Hondurans. On top of that they were devastated by two hurricanes last year, so Things are so bad in Honduras right now. I spoke to Elmer Gomez, who is 100 and seeking asylum in the U. S right now about the news, and I asked him to explain a bit. What if none, This is decisions mean for hundreds every day. That is, the future of the album is more so. Gomez says that Hernandez on Lee makes decisions that will personally benefit him or the people around him. He never acts for the good of the people. And Gomez reiterated. They just have nowhere to turn for help. They constantly feel like they're either being chased by criminals or the government. The other thing that Gomez mentioned is that he didn't want to migrate, and that's what I've heard from lots of people. They don't want to leave home. They just feel like they don't have any other option. And so if the U. S was to put sanctions on, Hernandez, would that happen anytime soon? It's unlikely it's going to happen soon. I think the interesting thing to watch for is that the State Department could actually just decide a lot of these things without passing this bill. I spoke to some experts They think that's unlikely as much as anything because the U. S. And Honduran governments are so intertwined right now that just slapping these sanctions on very quickly. Is going to be hard to do. So there's a lot of unwinding of this U S hunter and relationship and really a need for the U. S government to confront the relationship it has had with President Hernandez for all these

Portland Protests: Local Leaders Urging Feds to Leave

"In Oregon Governor Kate Brown and other officials are calling for the removal of federal law enforcement officers from the city of Portland. The Trump Administration deployed those forces, saying they are there to protect federal property in the city amid ongoing protests. But this week, officials from across the city and state and their congressional representatives have raised serious objections to their tactics. After camouflaged federal agents went into the streets with tear gas and tactical gear. Arresting protesters and taking some away in unmarked vans without the protesters have said explanation among those critical of the federal deployment in Portland, Oregon, Senator Jeff Merkley and he is with us now from Portland. Senator Merkley Thank you so much for speaking with us today. You're welcome, Michelle. Good to be with you. Well, you and three other members of Congress wrote last night to Attorney General William Barr and the acting Homeland Security secretary, Chad Wolf calling for these agents to be removed from Portland. Tell us briefly why you issued that calling. Have you gotten a response yet? This is an extraordinary circumstance. The customs and border protection and the marshals are deploying people to the streets of Portland. They're doing so at least the CBP forces, customs and border protection. They are marked just with a generic police. You have no idea who they who they represent. And then they're outside beyond the boundaries of the federal buildings, grabbing people on the streets, throwing them into unmarked vans, not disclosing even at that point, what agency they represent. This is the type Of unmarked paramilitary presence that you would expect in a dictatorship, not in a Democratic republic. It's absolutely terrifying to people. It's unacceptable. It has to end.

Trump survives impeachment: US president cleared of both charges

"That all of this is done what happens now for the trump presidency. I mean for the rest of his term. How're you expecting it to be different than and it might have been well in a way? This is like a turbo charge for president trump because he survived this gauntlet this impeachment proceeding without without having to be removed from office. And therefore he's waking up feeling emboldened and empowered and feels a conviction that everything he does is right. He is at the strongest point politically today that he's been in some time. The Gallup poll has his approval rating at forty percent which is sending shivers through the Spines of Democrats Crafts Around the country there are good feelings in the country about the economy which continues to home along to report to you tonight that our economy is the best I it has ever been. He had a pretty powerful economic message in a state of the Union. Even though a lot of it was exaggerated and he made claims that are not true. Jobs are booming. Income Poverty is plummeting. Crime is falling confidences surging. It was a selling argument. It for reelection and our country is thriving and highly respected again and so we can expect I think the president into continue to to sound teams into seek retaliation against all of those. He felt have wronged him in. It's impeachment process with this acquittal. How is that likely to change the office of the Presidency broadly? It's a good question because the evidence about trump's activity in Ukraine is. There's no dispute dispute about what he did. The evidence is clear the testimony was clear. Trump himself has admitted on camera that he wanted the Ukrainian government to do an investigation into his political political opponent and in fact he called on the Chinese government to do the same so what he did is clear what happened is the Republicans in the Senate made a political calculation about out not removing him from office for it that what he did doesn't amount to an impeachable offense and I spent some time in the last days interviewing historians and they said this is a major watershed moment in our nation's history because the way the founders set up our government setup. Our Constitution was to punish and remove presidents. Who who do exactly what? Donald Trump has been proven to have done with Ukraine. This is a system of checks and balances and what's happened is the legislative branch under Republican. Look in control in the Senate is no longer holding the president accountable they're becoming an instrument to propel his power and perpetuate his power and that's concerning to historians it's concerning to legal experts and it certainly would set a precedent. I would imagine for future presidents who will say look if trump got away with this I can get away with it too and it is just an expansion of that sort of executive power which is troubling to those who study the framers and the Constitution. Do you think I mean with a different president. You know ten years twenty years from now our future executive branches likely to think back to this moment and say I can do this. It's okay I'm not going to get in trouble. You know. They they could and we may not even have to look to future presidents for that. President trump has another ten months seven months in office. He may have another four years beyond that and there's no telling what he might try to do going forward because he's escaped accountability this time in the Russia investigation. You know the Muller Team documented did all of these examples for really proven examples where the president sought to obstruct justice but did not charge him or indict him because he's a sitting president narrow justice assists department guidelines about that. Well the very next day after Robert Mueller testified in Congress about this trump picked up the phone and called the Ukrainian president asking for the favor the political favors so he the conclusion he drew from the Muller Investigation and his lack of any legal punishment in that regard was that he can get away with with what he wants to do. He's the president if he does it so be it and the Republicans in on Capitol Hill or are there to support and protect him. So can you talk us through. How the president's President's own lawyers argued that the Senate basically doesn't have the power to to check the president one of the most striking moments in the president's defense came when one of his lawyers? Alan Dershowitz a noted criminal lawyer you've seen him on. TV for years Came to the floor of the Senate and advanced an argument that a lot of legal experts that said was dubious every public official that I know believes that his election is in the public interest. And mostly right your elections in the public interest. He said if the president does something that will help his reelection therefore is in the best interest of the country and if if a president does something which he believes will help him get elected in the public interest. He cannot be held or rather be impeached for for that action that cannot be the kind of quid pro. Quo that results in impeachment. And so that's a blanket. Excuse use for the president to do what he did with Ukraine but obviously anything else that the president deems to be in the interest of his reelection that is an argument that Dershowitz had to kind of walk back a little bit In in some comments he made the next day and he got a lot of heat from legal scholars who said that's just a completely baloney argument argument with no constitutional grounding but it is indicative. I think of how President Trump himself views his power and views his authority as the president and commander-in-chief founder and chief. Did we see a lot of senators latching onto that argument. A few did Actually the Republican senators of course but a few parroted the Dershowitz line came as a way of defending the president and saying basically he's president he can do whatever he wants for his reelection because getting him reelected is in the best interest of our country. What about the way that? The impeachment trial played out in the Senate. The fact that there were no new documents that there were no witnesses is that likely also to set. Its own kind of precedent for or the way that impeachment is handled in the future. Certainly we've only had an impeachment trial three times in our history and so there's not really a blueprint door protocol. Offer how to go about doing this. And and the Senate leaders along with the chief justice of the Supreme Court to kind of change and adapt the rules as they went along to figure out how this would work mark and the Democrats say this was a complete sham. Trial that Mitch. McConnell designed it from the get-go to move quickly to get to a very fast acquittal to turn the page to save trump into move on with the legislative business not to delve into the details. Not To really scrutinize the evidence. The most surprising thing I think watching the Sahlin fold the last few weeks that John Bolton came forward publicly or at least in the manuscript of his book which leaked out through the media with new information right. He's a first first hand witness to what the president wanted done and Ukraine. He offered to testify before the Senate or at least indicated he would if if asked. Here's somebody who could have come forward to provide a new to account that would have provided new evidence to this case and there was no interest among the Republican majority in the Senate to hear what he had to say. I don't believe the testimony is necessary. The house else managers have a burden of proof a burden of proof to prove their case they had fallen woefully short. We now have allegations from Mr Bolton. I think they would have more credibility if the allegations came from someone else. There is no new information in my opinion based on what John Bolton has known but today in an effort to generate interest in a book have selectively released. Information that that to me doesn't go beyond what we've seen in the seventeen witnesses who've already testify only two. Republican senators voted to allow witnesses. Mitt Romney and and Susan Collins of Maine came to what extent is the Senate giving up the power that they have to oversee the president of provide any kind of check on the president. Give us a sense of the power that's been given up with the smooth you know they've they've been giving up power to this president for three years now in in part because Republicans threat the party live in fear of him. He has such an intensity of support within the Republican base and approval rating among Republicans of eighty to ninety percent and he follows these things very closely and vows to retaliate and shows that he can punish people if they betray him across him. Just ask former Senator Jeff Flake or former senator Bob corker. So there's that fear factor in the Senate and and what they've done to adapt to that is is not to stand up to him not to ever say he's wrong and in turn. They're getting some of their agenda through right. They're getting tax cuts passed. They're getting a lot of conservative. Justices installed hold onto the federal judiciary. They feel like Mitch. McConnell certainly feels like this is an opportunity to advance the conservative agenda but they just need to placate eight trump and played a trump and keep him calm but in so doing they're giving up their power of accountability. And it's certainly not the way that the framers and the founders imagined Dr our system of government working in Democracy Phil Rocker is the White House. Bureau chief for the Post. "Senator Jeff Bingaman? He is the former Senator from New Mexico where he served on the Senate finance committee, as well as the health education, labor and pensions committee, and the joint economic committee. Simple to say that Senator Bingaman has had a big focus on money and personal finance throughout his career in the US Senate after leaving the Senate. He was a member of the bipartisan policy center's retirement security and personal savings commission. Senator, thanks so much joining us on the program today, Rick. You represented Mexico in the Senate for more than thirty years during that period of time three decades. What did you notice about how our nation's retirement policies affect individual consumers? Noticed was that we do way too little in this country to help people prepare for retirement. We don't have in place, the policies we should at the federal level or at the state level to make it easy for people to put away. Vailable what they retire. We make it difficult for lawyers to provide some of these retirement benefits for their workers. So I, I became persuaded that we need some major changes at our retirement pension policies here in the country. And when you were in the Senate, you created legislation sponsored legislation to help address these issues. The main thing I proposed some other senators was to was to have an automatic IRA act, which, which basically would provide that employers with fifty or more. If they had a retirement program, the employees when they do on that person would automatically be enrolled in their retirement program, had, of course, the employees could could decide that would be told they could decide to opt out of that not put anything away for retirement chose to. But the default position was that they would be included in the retirement program that that would dramatically improve the numbers increase the numbers of people who have retirement programs that they're going to benefit from once they quit work. And that Bill is once again, going to be brought forth in the congress so many millions of workers working at companies that don't offer a retirement planner of any kind and program like this one, as you said, would benefit millions of Americans. Yeah, that's, that's certainly. View it shouldn't it shouldn't take positive. By the employees to, to get signed up for a retirement plan. It ought to be the norm that you are signed up for it, unless you want to opt out of it, as I mentioned after you left the Senate. You joined the bipartisan policy center, a member of the retirement security, and personal savings commission releasing its report in two thousand sixteen what were the main findings of that report? The findings were that we need to shore up the social security system. Both the finances of it the solvency of it long term. But also, we need to find ways to provide a more adequate benefit in social security for people who have not been able to earn that much during their work period. So we made recommendations in that regard. We also made proposals to try to help people to Consol. Various retirement benefits that they might receive lots of people go for one job to another job to another job during their work career. And they may get a little bit of a pension from one or or several of those positions. But it's a hodgepodge, and there's a lot of what's called leakage out of the system in the sense that when people quit one job, they're given the option. Do you want to cash out your retirement benefits? Had a lot of people. Unfortunately, say sure, just give me a the cash at this point. They don't realize that the end result of all that is that yacht, age sixty five or whatever age they retire. They're not gonna have any retirement. We'll have more on addressing the problem of funding social security..

We're still talking about Bill bars testimony yesterday and getting reaction to it. Here's a Texan giving his reaction former Texas solicitor general Scott Keller, we've been hearing about collusion collusion's collusion for so long. And now all of a sudden there's this pivot to. We will talk about collusion anymore because at the end of the day, the Muller report came out, and it said that there was no charges to be brought here, and that scenario, I think attorney general bars completely, correct? That the judicial process should not be weaponized for political ends. And that's exactly I think the point the Senator Graham was making here. You wanna talk about collision? Let's talk about collusion. It's not there. Well, speaking of Senator Graham, he went on because he is the chair of the Senator Jeff Sherry committee. He went on to say what this is really all about. And it's it's called anger. Not only at the president constant anger the president. But now Robert Muller on the other side, we gave Muller two years to do his job nineteen lawyers. There's no love lost between them they Democratic Congress Senate really are truly nasty women with a foul mouth to leave boots Kirstin cinema. Who is the Senate vamp, Maxine Waters and the Somali from Minnesota is a wonder why nice ladies are treated like trash. These women have lowered the bar for all of us. Hope there's plenty of security because I don't trust the democrat side of the congress. I don't wanna see him Aaron Burr Alexander Hamilton duels situation. Zico services should go into their pocket. Books are all kinds of things women keep their let the games begin. Why is that not going into the news at half past one of them were astounding pieces of this little theater? Is twenty nine year old Alexandria, Cossio Cortez? Who knows all things about all things? She has decided to invite Maria Archie LA. As quote living proof that the courage within us can change the world. She's the one. Anna maria. She's the one who jumped into the elevator with Senator Jeff flake. And harangued him during the hearings. And so apparently, the lesson we draw from this is if you'd like to get invited to the state of the union address, a simply confront a prominent Republican. Who's involved in a serious issue and harangue him? Now, if you're a guy you're like get punched in the face for somebody. If you're a woman, of course, you have free rein to do this. And she said. You're telling all women that they don't matter. This is one devoted yet to come down. And Kevin on. Chicken noodle. News called the interaction. With camera went viral. Flaked then call for an additional FBI investigation into cavenaugh. Ultimately, ended up voting to confirm. Our chiller migrated to New York City from Columbia when she was seventeen years old. She has spent her career advocating for racial and economic Justice quote, quote, she's a co executive director of the very left wing center for popular democracy. So there's your your key to being a star. Joining the list for politics, fry to embarrass a Republican. As you're successful in so doing then some mindless, twit like Alexandria, Calcio Cortez. Invite you to come and sit at the state of the union address. So you can watch the theater and be a witness to the events of the evening. Just really. George Washington ever stood up in front of congress and gave his state of the union address. He wrote it down Senate over. And which used to be the form. I'm not quite sure when they decided that that would be a great moment to stand up and talk I've loud, I guess some politicians somewhere along the road figured out that gee, I can get free press by doing this. But it kind of makes you wish for return to the old form. Just write it down trying not to use long words because most of them can't figure out what they are the staff people for this just send it over be done with it. Because mortgage is more theater. More and more theater or got to tell you the story. Because I do geek out on some of this stuff. They found now, and I'll post this story from one of my favorite sites is athletes obscure. Emphasis obscure dot com. They have found medieval fragments of the legend of king. Arthur. City inside the Bristol central library has been there for hundreds of years. This text tells of a battle where Merlin leads a charge using a dragon banner that actually breathes fire. Now, this is from the thirteenth century is written. And they were tucked away in the binding of a later printed book, what used to happen when books came into Great Britain, or when they were shipped from anywhere there were shipped without covers and the courage would then be put on wants to say right because you saved an awful lot of weight by not having a cover. So at the time. When they were binding this book around fifteen hundred or so it was younger Sony's or French scholar that was printed in Strasburg Germany, then shift over to England. And then what they did was they they take old old books. Basically the to fill out the rest of the cover. There were no codified crafts back down on bookbinding. So you'd peers together fragments of old manuscripts to hide unsightly by the features of new books. It was a trick pages. Like, those the theory and fragments were written on the calf skin way too expensive to be thrown out. So you keep in the workshop could be used in a pinch repurposes pace down the end papers covering the boards on the books inside cover. So they found this gives insight into the development of the legend of Arthur because this is an early. Earlier manuscript than they've had before. This all Iberian just was searching for examples of this recycling. Practice uses a teaching material on medieval bookbinding, and he got this son of a gun. This is about king. Arthur. So one side of each sheet is legible the other side is damaged. But they've already found enough to generate excitement here, I'm gonna post this for you. There are thirty manuscript written in old French which was actually the first HALE in which the legend of King Arthur was written. And they believe it was written sometime between twelve fifty and twelve seventy and the earliest known were from twelve twenty. So this is a very very early version. I just keep thinking that. There was a king. Arthur. There was looks a lot like Richard Burton. That's why I figure four one zero w I'll post it, look if you see here on this stuff. Like, I do I think it's really cool. If you think it's boring you'll pass over the Bruce Elliott show page and a handful of minutes one way or the other I came across something fascinating for the patriot post, and this is just kind of educational for all of us. It was a piece on whether or not we can actually. Disagree and civil manner with a leftist. There was a time when people on the left and people on the right would be able to disagree and still remain friends. I think it was Jefferson who said that he'd never wanna lose a friend over a political difference. That time is not now. We now have a phenomena where unless you buy into the. The theology of whichever group of individuals you have to identify with it gets very difficult to have a conversation because your view it as an outsider view it as a threat if you sit down and talk with somebody who has a classic liberal the way we understand the liberalism to be Hubert Humphrey liberal. JFK liberal. You can you can agree on some points. And the difference is this the end goal is the same the end goal during the nineteen forties fifties and sixties and the end goal was the same. The end goal was the betterment of this country and the strengthening of the union and the reinforcement of the Republican form of government. That's not the case now. Because you no longer have a similar end goal because then you could disagree on the on the manner in which you get to the end goal. But still want to have a common end goal. Now, if you look at the values of the political left to look at the values of the political, right? We don't share a common goal. So it's not just a matter of disagreeing with the manner in which we reach a common goal. It's a matter of of disagreeing or the very direction of the country on what the country means. Oh and Benjamin from Prager university coming on this. And he said, here's some examples raising kids without a gender identity or encouraging them to question their sexual identity. Well, too many conservatives. This is a form of child abuse care who's doing parents teachers doctors their goal is not my goal to raise a child whether gender identity. I raised my son to be a man because he is male. I raised my daughter to be a woman because she is female. Demonizing or white people in males for the world's problem. It's not part of my value system. We had a call the other day who said, of course, I'm all benefiting from white privilege. I said, and what fashion. Well, if you don't understand. I'm not going to tell you. Well, another words there is no common goal there. They're simply can I'd even is you Thus I can marginalize you thus. I don't have to pay any attention to you. Which is what the left has been the right pretty consistently over the last ten years or so with an ever increasing temple. Personally, I believe in merit over race. I also believe in manners over race. I believe in courtesy over race. I believe in education over race. The left does not. The left believes that group identity is all. Then if you're on the proper aggrieved group that is that's the the be all and end all. You know, if you're a half, black, half, Hispanic lesbian woman. With an adopted child who questions his or her sexual identity at age three. You are in hog heaven. This is just the best best place to be in the world. It's all about the group to which you have to belong. As I said a number of times and have been saying for twenty five years. I don't care. What race? My neighbor is I care that he takes his trash out on fresh night. Teddy Moses lawn. That is nice to his kids that he's nice to his wife. And then he's a good neighbor. That's it. That's all I care about when it comes to being neighbors. It's all about what comes to being friends. I don't care. What race you are? You sit down play nickel dime quarter poker. With me to matter to me. What matters to me is a good guy. That's it. People can differ about how many legal immigrants we should have in the country. But when it comes to the Democrats. They simply say no there's no shared goal here. We want open borders. 'cause borders have. No. Meaning I believe borders. Have meaning. I believe that our culture has to have a distinct set of features in order to bind together common language, common goals common philosophy of life. Which means in the case of the United States of America. Eight Judeo-Christian ethic. And these are not values shared by the political left. So you and I disagree on how many immigrants should be coming into the country. I've come to believe that we should have right now for the time being almost none. We should be living in a couple of hundred thousand and that's it. No more until this particular set of waves of immigrants can be fully absorbed into the American culture. And I believe in absorbing into the American culture the left does not. They believe that keeping people in distinct subgroups is to their benefit. So that's what they want to encourage. There's no need to think about this country is a melting pot. Is instead like the OCD individual who has to have all the pieces in one corner of the plate and the carrots another corner they'll plate with touching and the meat another corner of the play. Nothing's touching. We have very different values. Well, I put food on the plate it can touch. It's fine. They all intermingle all flavors are gonna mouth of same time for people on the political left. God forbid that happens. You have to keep the Ps away from the meat because otherwise the Ps would absorb some meat flavor. We don't want that to happen. Plenty of making. So what does the left offerings place nothing? What are their goals? Well, we all understand their goal is to be kids with no clear sexual identity group think based on race gender and class. Infanticide. Open borders. No national pride. No national borders. If you're okay with that chances are you're on the left and you'll listen to the show as a matter of amusement because you think we're all records. If you're on the right? You might think well, actually, I I like the history of western civilization. I like what's happened so far by and large. Yeah. We've screwed up a number of times. But we've done far more good than evil the ideas from the left actually threatened the things that I cherish. We have no common goal thus. It's very difficult to have a discussion with somebody on the far left because there is no common goal. They want something different for this country. Then what we want? They hate us. Get used to it. We can't play nice eventually somebody on the far left. Just accept. They hate you. They want you to shut up and sit down they want to run things. And they want to move toward a socialist utopia where people are utilitarian parts of a machine and not individuals. That's the truth. That is my view comment for ten w stadium succeeded. I learned a long time ago that you don't know how well a house is built until you go through a storm. That's when you figure out exactly what leaks..

"One Republican who has been a fierce critic of the president announcing today he will not challenge him in a twenty twenty GOP primary. Former Arizona Senator Jeff flake now a contributor to CBS news on CBS this morning. He said he thinks the president should face a party challenger, but he won't be one of them horror. We start I want to find out if you want anybody to call you presidents, are you are you you thought about running in two thousand twenty are you going to run? I've always said that I do hope that there is a Republican who challenges the president. I still hope that somebody does that somebody won't be me. I will not. Canada. Did you look into being a candidate to run against the president? And what did you learn from that investigation that somebody else who might run would have to consider? I think anybody who's in the Senate looks at that at seven point. But there really isn't a path right now that I can see certainly not willing to be out there already raising a lot of money and basically living on the road right now. That's a difficult path. Anyway. See and the president's campaign melted. Trying trying to do everything they can to squelch any opposition. I still hope that psalm some are still talking about new run. I think that's healthy. And I'm not a fan of this present. But that won't be me. Former Arizona Senator Jeff flake now a contributor his appearance on CBS news this morning in two days after his appearance on sixty minutes. Former Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz facing more questions on how a viable third party bid would be for him. He's making the media rounds, including this appearance on CNBC. I believe that if Iran has a democrat, I would have to say things that I know in my heart. I do not believe, and I would have to be disingenuous for example. What the progressive left leaning Democratic Party is suggesting is government paid health care for everyone. Which is free government job free for everyone and government paid college for everyone. I was a supporter and Hammet supporter of the Affordable Care Act, which I think can be improved and enhanced so that the premiums come down for families. But if you tally up those three programs over ten year period, it's approximately forty trillion dollars and ladies and gentlemen, we're sitting right now with a national debt of twenty one and a half trillion dollars on the balance sheet on our country. And if we were a company if America was a company at twenty one and a half trillion dollars of debt, adding a trillion dollars a year, we would be facing insolvency Howard Schultz, the former CEO of Starbucks out with a new book from the ground up and talking about a potential independent bid for the White House during a morning appearance in New Hampshire. Former New York City. Mayor Michael Bloomberg trying to sharpen his differences with potential twenty twenty democratic candidates as he moves closer to a potential White House bid. Michael Bloomberg calling a wealth tax by Senator Elizabeth Warren unconstitutional and criticizing former democrat Howard Schultz says at one time CEO of Starbucks considers his own bid for the presidency. Stephanie Murray politico covering the event by Michael Bloomberg at Saint John's college in Manchester, we'll check in with her in just a moment during a Q and A session at the event the issue of climate change again front and center years that with former New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg. I'm Roger Stevenson from him on a member of the New Hampshire coastal, risk and hazards commission. We've created over three years recommendations to protect coastal communities. My question is the. Said that last year that we have twelve years in order to make drastic changes in order to meet the Paris agreements. At the end of the next term of the next president will be halfway there. So what does the next president have to do in order to make sure these changes are approved? They're durable. And they can be implemented beyond the first presidency. Well, I think the president's job to present really has two jobs. One is to what I call run the railroad. And so to make sure all of the parts of government work and implement the laws we passed, for example, the environment pro environmental laws, everyone describe them. And that's not happening. You should appoint people that have the interests of what the law was approved tried to have not going in the other direction, and that will help a lot. The second thing is the president's job is to be the unifier and the cheerleader and the spokesperson for the public. It's not to tell the public what they should believe it is to explain to the public what the president's vision is. And why she or he thinks it's the right direction to go. And we have to be the do that to influence the rest of the world because we're dependent on them just as much as. Dependent ourself for cleaning up the air. Somebody pollutes on the other side of the earth is just as bad as if somebody pollutes right here close anyways. And. The president's job is to do that. And our president's doing neither of those things. Also of the twelve years is not the end of the world. It is things are getting more out of hand. All the time. There's no discrete drop dead day. The glaciers are melting at an alarming rate, and whether or not you stopped something polluting right now, it's not gonna stop that melting. That's going to continue for a while. We've already done that damage what we're really trying to do is to not have more damage done. Joining us from Dover. New Hampshire is Stephanie Murray. She is the author of the Massachusetts playbook for politico and covered. Michael Bloomberg this morning in Manchester on the issues that he seems to be talking the most about climate change. We just heard about that and guns are these two issues enough to propel Michael Bloomberg to be a top tier candidate for the democratic presidential nomination. Thanks for having me climate change was certainly a large focus Bloomberg trip through New Hampshire today. He started out the day with a talk at college at Manchester, and then he headed up Nashua for a factory tour then had further to Dover for a Horace businesses in the downtown area. And he talked a lot about the green deal about work that he signed with the Sierra Club, Hugh, close down coal plants and reduced carbon emission. So he's really trying to talk up his position on climate change. He also President Trump's for failing to act on climate change. That's definitely something that. Carving out at decide whether to jump into the twenty twenty race or not is he running do you think he will be a candidate? That's a great question. And he was asked that today a couple of times, and you know, it's not clear he said that he and this is his second trip New Hampshire. He was in New Hampshire and October at told reporters today that he's really just trying to get a feel for what people are thinking about what folks want and whether he has talents are better use running for president or queuing work through hit lemberg foundation. And he didn't really gave a timeline for one. He'll decide if you job in or out of the race. But this trip visiting factory visiting businesses talking college. I'll I've either all really kind of. He for somebody who is a candidate. So I mean, those signs are definitely all their day in the body of your stories. Stephanie Murray, you point out that Michael Bloomberg is seventy six years old and earlier today he was asked about his health and his diet. What did he say? Yeah. It was that was kind of a a lighter note. So he said that he doesn't need much red meat if you he's really straight. Now, he's also laying off alcohol. He said that he's done. Without having a drink this year, and he's trying to last the whole year without having a drink anything else exercises every day. So you've been good health. Only vices Keith at that popcorn. So as this race begins to take shape in the field begins to widen Europe in New Hampshire. You're following all of this. What can we expect in the coming weeks? We know that former vice president Joe Biden announcing last night that he is closer to a decision one way or the other. But what about other potential candidates? So I think in the next few weeks, you can expect the field to start growing it even faster rate than it is right now, you know, the past couple of weeks we've seen so many people either get closer to announcing or announced outright. I think you can expect a lot more of that. And we're also of starting to see a little bit of tension. I've noticed that the past few weeks that candidate who are already out there. Have it really did criticizing one another. Saving it for the president. But today, Bloomberg he kind of knocked Senator Elizabeth more wealth tax plan. Thank that it probably unconstitutional and she within an hour or so but heading back on Twitter saying that Bloomberg and billionaire Howard Schultz are trying to protect that protects their wealth. So you're starting to see those little division form. And I think that that is a sign of what's the con isn't just get larger and larger at politico dot com. This is the headline Michael Bloomberg tees off on potential twenty twenty rivals as he inches toward a twenty twenty run. Stephanie Murray joining us from Dover New Hampshire. Thank you for being with us. Thank you for having me. So to that point from Stephanie Murray just where is the Democratic Party today, and how will progressives shape? It's future. There's a story the hill dot com looking at freshman, Representative Alexandria Causey. A Cortes known as AO see with some house. Democrats privately urging a primary challenge next year for details. We talked earlier today with the author of that story, Scott one. Well, it's fascinating. Steve. I mean AO see the freshman firebrand from New York who defeated Joe Crowley and a primary last year, she has been aligning herself with these Justice Democrats sort of this insurgent group on the left progressive who have vowed to run primaries against entrenched establishment Democrats, like Henry clay are. There was also some rumors that they were gonna target Hakeem Jeffries, a fellow New Yorker who just actually replace Crowley as. Democratic democratic caucus chairman. And so now, this is obviously upsetting a lot of fellow Democrats that she is aligning herself with this group, targeting other Democrats. And so now, the tables are turning and some Democrats are now whispering in the halls of congress plotting to try to take her out in a democratic primary in twenty twenty and so far these are very early conversations. But I did talk to one. Infuriated democrat democratic lawmaker who said he has been encouraging members of the New York delegation. The people who work most closely with AO see to find somebody recruit someone to challenge her in a primary in twenty twenty. And and so a fascinating development, and sort of you know, sort of an example of what happens when a party games control of government, and really has a broad array of members, you have sort of centrist and establishment Democrats fighting with those in the same party, but on the left when you look though at Alexandria, Qazi Cortez and the shape the shape of the twenty twenty democratic presidential primary race in many respects. It doesn't she represent where the party is or potentially heading. I think that's right. Certainly when it comes to a presidential primary. She represents where. Primary candidates are trying to appeal to because they're trying to appeal to the base, and she is extremely popular with the progressive base. And and just last night in the CNN townhall with Kamala Harris, Senator from California, she come Harrison Dorsey, a number of ideas that Cossio Cortez has been talking about including a green new deal and other issues. And so a lot of these folks who are contemplating running for president or have already jumped into the race like Harris are sort of running to the left to wear Cossio Cortez is and and really trying to appeal to her herself AFC because they know that an AO endorsement would go a long way, given the fact that she has millions and millions of followers on, Twitter and Instagram and other social media available at the hill dot.
