NAACP leader on diversity in Biden's Cabinet and commitment to civil rights

"Speech days after the election, Joe Biden think black voters for helping him win the White House. The African American community stood up again. For many with always having my back on, I'll have yours. Now. There's some concern that Biden isn't making good on that promise. At least seven civil rights groups are pressing to meet with the president elect, including the end of the P and the National Urban League. They want Biden to name or black leaders to top jobs in his administration. Marc Morial leads the Urban League mark. Welcome. Hey, it's great to be with you. Thank you for having me. My pleasure. And if and when you get a meeting with the President elect, what will you tell him? So importantly way look forward to a direct communication with the president elect, and we're gonna reaffirm our interest on behalf of the community that the number of Diverse cabinet members, particularly African Americans. Prominent and every level of the body Administration Cabinet sub cabinet. As well as at the White House. You know, we want to give the president elect due credit. He chose an excellent running mate, Senator Harris. He's made an important appointment of Cecilia Rouse, his chair of the president's Council of Economic Advisors, and Linda Thomas Greenfield as U. N ambassador. But we're heavily focused. What's known as a statutory Cabinet, defense and justice and transportation and commerce and labor and hot and education and HHS, For example, that is where The important levers of power are We're going to communicate that to him, and the second thing will be communicating. Eyes our interest in the public policy arena. We need aggressive enforcement of civil rights laws. We need strong investments through both stimulus. And infrastructure plans, and we need Focus on long term issues of racial justice, criminal justice reform, police justice reform just to name a few high priorities and finally With respect to cove it we need to ensure That the vaccine is safe and effective for all people and that there is a community based distribution system. To ensure that people in our community have access to the vaccine. I guess What I'm trying to understand is if you are actually concerned with what you've seen so far, or if you're just trying to get ahead of the process, As you point out, there have been many black officials appointed to keep jobs in the Biden administration says they're not done yet. Yeah, I think it's both. And I think it's uh they've been to statutory Cabinet nominees thus far. Treasury Three rather Treasury homeland security as well as the State Department, and that's important and we do have a concern and we do want to get ahead of the process and We want to be clear that we're looking for a cabinet. When it comes to African Americans and meets but really exceeds the high water marks of the Clinton and Obama cabinets. This is a different time. And the president elect is made of important public commitment to racial justice, and I believe he's serious about that, but toe execute that He's got to have people who have lived experiences. As well as professional qualifications, along with connections to the communities that have borne the brunt of the country's systemic racial injustice. Look, there's no doubt having a diversity of opinions from all walks of life is critical in any leadership role, but make the case why Race matters so much here. Ben Carson. I'm thinking of Ben Carson, a black housing secretary. I assume you don't agree at all with his policies on many black leaders At the same time, we're saying that outgoing Senator Doug Jones, a white man would make a great attorney general because of his record fighting for civil rights. So let me say this. Van Carson is a great doctor. I never thought Ben Carson was qualified. To be secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development. I thought he would have made made a great surgeon general. You made a great secretary of health. Human services. I think it was an example of picking a quote unquote black person and putting him in what some perceive to be a black position at the Department of Housing and Urban Development. And I think it was It was a mistake, and I think it was a disservice to Ben Carson. So I mean, it's important. Understand this is not just about a black face in a certain place.

"Report. Election workers are counting votes in battleground states, where winner has yet to be projected into presidential election officials did release new batches of results today showing Joe Biden improving his standing in three states and President Trump making inroads in 1/4 button believes he'll be victorious. We have no doubt But when the Countess trendy Senator Harris and I will be declared the winners, the president is expected to speak this hour in Pennsylvania. 93% of the votes are in and they do so far have Mr Trump leading by 79,000 votes. 2020 Election Updates: Biden projected to win Wisconsin and Michigan

"Furiously counting ballots as the nation awaits the outcome of the presidential race and braces for Possible recounts and legal challenges. Unlike in previous years, states are contending with an avalanche of mail in ballots driven by the global pandemic every election What's reported on election night Unofficial results. The counting of votes extends past Election Day this year. With so many ballots in close races in key states, it's expected to take more time to count every vote. And with Joe Biden close to victory, but still in a tight race. All eyes are on Nevada and Pennsylvania and Nevada officials will provide an update this morning as Biden leads there by less than 1000 votes. This morning's results will include mail in ballots received late last week. Meanwhile, President Trump leads by a slim margin in key Pennsylvania, and that's where he filed a lawsuit. Laying the groundwork to contest the election. It's It's a cascade. Right? So it's a what's going on is like an assembly line. So first you have ballots that are just came in. They're sealed. They did they get sorted. And prepared to move from this ordering. After they're sorted, they move Teo. They moved to the extraction table where they get run through. And slice and a secrecy envelope is extracted. And then they have to be extracted again for to take the ballot contents of secrecy envelope and then they have to be. Unfolded and back, bended and prepared for scanning. That takes it takes time. It takes time to open that there's money belts as everybody else. That's why we knew that it was going to take longer President Trump State largely out of public view Wednesday, issuing no public statements after wrongly declaring victory in several battleground states. Biden ended up picking up Michigan and Wisconsin, reclaiming a key part of that blue wall that slipped away from Democrats four years ago. Michigan We'll complete his vote soon. Maybe as early as today. I feel very good about Pennsylvania. Virtually all the remaining balance to be counted were cast by mail. A way been winning. 78% of the votes. By mail, inoffensive age. We flipped Arizona. The second District of Nebraska. Of special significance to me. Is that we won with the majority of the American people. And every indication is that the majority will grow. Of a popular vote lead of nearly three million votes. And every indication is that will grow as well. Indeed, Senator Harris and I are on track. You win more votes than any ticket in the history of this country than the president's campaign, meanwhile, says it will ask for a legal recount in Wisconsin. Of the

"As yet undecided presidential election, millions of outstanding ballots and a half dozen battleground states still being counted. Joe Biden, the Democratic nominee. He has small leads in Michigan and Nevada, while Republican President Donald Trump has an edge in North Carolina and Georgia. Little bit of a larger lead in Pennsylvania. Joe Biden gave a statement today in his hometown. Wilmington, Delaware. I'm not here to declare that we have one. But I am here to report the Countess finished. We believe we will be the winners. All those counted. We have won Wisconsin by 20,000 Vert votes virtually the same margin of President Trump won at state four years ago in Michigan. We lead by over 35,000 votes. And is growing a substantially bigger margin on President Trump won Michigan in 2016. Michigan, will complete his vote soon, maybe as early as today, and I feel very good about Pennsylvania, virtually all the remaining balance to be counted. Cast by mail, and we've been winning 78% of the votes by mail in Pennsylvania. We flipped Arizona and the second District of Nebraska off special significance to me is that we won with the majority of the American people, and every indication is that the majority will grow. Of a popular vote lead of nearly three million votes, and every indication is that will grow as well. Indeed, Senator Harris and I are on track to win more votes than any ticket in the history of this country ever won the presidency and vice president over 70 million votes. I'm very proud of our campaign. Only three presidential campaigns in the past have defeated an incumbent president. When it's finished, God willing, will be the fourth. This is a major achievement. This is a major achievement has been a long and difficult campaign. It has been a more difficult time for our country. Hard time. We had a hard campaigns before we faced hard times before, so once this election is finalized and behind us, it will be time for us to do what we've always done as Americans. With the harsh rhetoric of the campaign behind us to lower the temperature to see each other again to listen to one another tweet to hear each other again, respecting care for one another to unite to heal to come together as a nation. I know this won't be easy. I'm not naive. Neither of us are I know how deep and hard the opposing views are in our country on so many things, But I also know this is well to make progress. We have to stop treating our opponents as enemies. We are not enemies. What brings us together as Americans is so much stronger than anything that can care us apart. So let me be clear. I we're campaigning as the Democrats, but I will govern as an American President Joe Biden in Wilmington, Delaware today. With

"Three positive Corona virus test today for people close to the Biden Harris ticket. Former vice president tweeting that a crew member on his plane tested positive. They were reportedly with Biden aboard flights Monday to Ohio and Tuesday to Florida. But Biden says he was never in close contact with the person and both were wearing masks. The campaign reportedly learned of this test during contact tracing after the news earlier today that Kamala Harris is communications director and a flight crew member had tested positive. Biden says he has tested negative and per CDC guidelines He won't need to self isolate. Harris, however, has cancelled in person appearances for the next few days. Earlier this afternoon, CBS's major Garrett told us he doesn't think this will likely impact the Campaign's final weeks because the pandemic is still the main frame. "She never answered the question": VP candidates' debate sidestep

"I'm John Aaron. And I'm Joan Joe's Teddy Gilman is our producer and a hand running mates in the presidential election clash in their loan debate. We have team coverage. President Trump calls testing positive for the Corona virus, a blessing from God. A sign of the Times officer sees counterfeit masks and test kits at our ports. I'm making clarity. It's 7 32. CBS News Special Report, Senator Kamala Harris getting tough on the virus that has claimed the lives of more than 210,000 Americans. At last night's debate. They knew what was happening and they didn't tell you The president said it was a hoax. Well, the President Trump has also as well received the Corona virus as more more than two of 20 people in his inner circle have also tested positive. Vice President Mike Pence defended the administration's response. President Trump's leadership operation Warp speed we believe will have literally tens of millions of doses of the vaccine before the end of this year. Another topic of discussion. The Supreme Court nomination, she gets a fair hearing. We particularly hope that we don't see the kind of attacks on her. Christian faith that we saw before let the American people fill that seat in the White House. And then we'll fill that seat on the United States Supreme Court. Nominations for Amy Cockney Barrel begin next week. CBS News Special Report 7 33 and the candidates also do plenty of dodging last night. W. GOP's Capitol Hill correspondent Mitchell Miller has more this debate was much better and more civil than the first presidential debate. But the two candidates also worked hard not to answer some of the most pointed questions. Vice president. Pence sidestepped the question related to the so called Super spreader event at the White House, and Senator Harris didn't answer when Pence asked her if Joe Biden would try to pack the Supreme Court if he's elected, neither candidate did anything major to hurt their respective campaigns. And while it was a solid debate, it's not likely it will change many voters minds and we're hearing your thoughts. On last night's debate. Frederick of Northwest D. C, called into the TalkBack line and said he was impressed with Senator Kamala Harris was more civil side scored. Good points, but I think Senator Harris, her passion and her convictions were a little more clearly stated, and I was especially impressed by her interest in moving our country forward in a new direction. Now Janet from Gaithersburg shared her disappointment that neither candidate answered questions head on. I thought that the debate was like a jeopardy show. Where the debaters gave their answers. Highlights from a VP debate mostly about Trump (and the fly)

"Voters Voters looking looking for for a different debate. Will they got it last night? Vice President Mike Pence and California Senator Kamala Harris facing off in their one and only debate of this election cycle, very different tone, very different style than we saw from President Trump and former vice President Joe Biden. But that does not mean that there wasn't criticism and interruption. Both of the candidates did AA lot of that last night, especially when they were talking about the economy talking about taxes, talking about health care. And climate change. But the big topic of the night, of course, was Cove in 19, Senator Harris criticizing vice president Pence and President Trump for the way they've handled the virus. How come were you when you were panicked about where you're gonna get your next roll of toilet paper? How come were you when your kids were sent home from school, and you didn't know when they could go back? How current to you when your Children's couldn't see your parents because you were afraid they could kill them. Will the American people have demonstrated over the last eight months? It was given the fax. They're willing to put the health of their families and their neighbors and people they don't even know first. President Trump and I have great confidence in the American people and their ability to take that information and put it into practice. Alright, So every debate has its big moment. Harris on taking a COVID-19 vaccine: 'If Trump tells us to take it, I won't'

"If the doctors tell us that we should take it, I'll be the first in line to take it absolutely. But if Donald Trump tells us I should take that we should take it. I'm not taking it. WanNa. Talk about that exact moment in tonight's debate with one of the experts we turn to often doctor Irwin redlener is with US tonight pediatrics physician senior research scholar at Columbia. University's Earth Institute also happens to be the founding director of Colombia's National Center for Disaster Preparedness and Doc. It's just anecdotal but I swear she spoke for a lot of Americans tonight who don't WanNa see vaccine rushed to market for political reasons to match a date on the calendar twenty six days from now. We're fighting a growing anti vaccine movement in this country aided and abetted by the Russians on social media. It's a dicey time to get the public behind anything in a politicized pandemic. Is there reason to what she said tonight that people should doubt something pushed by the President and wait for something? That's maybe Endorsed by Dr, Fauci. Well Bryan that you're. You're absolutely right and I think the absolutely and the words that were spoken by Senator Harris were absolutely shared by undoubtedly many many Americans you know. Be. Committing twenty thousand public lies or allies over the last few years and expect people to believe you. This is a classic. You know the boy who cried wolf situation and I don't remember any time at least in my life where a President United States of either party was so dishonest and so disbelieved that somebody a US senator say. I'm not going to even begin to believe the President United States I'm going to wait for the scientists to tell me what I should be doing. So this is this is a particularly poignant moment in presidential messaging and how much it's going to matter who is giving the message Brian. Let's talk about the president of the United States and to keep you from having to say it I, know he is not your patient nor have you examined him but we know something about the meds. He is on he said tonight that he chose the medical discipline that was his own treatment. He said tonight's he's going to find a way to get his treatment for free to those who need it probably physically implausible Do you believe that the meds he's on have a way of suppressing actual illness things like temperature and changing behavior Yes Brandon. These are experimental meds and an experimental regiment that he's on. It's preposterous to think thin. The general public are a few people in the general public would be able to get the kind of care and demand the kind of care that the president did. So that's completely out of the question why he felt it necessary to say that I don't know but it's it's absolutely out of the question Brian it the other things so much about this whole story over the last week or so. That's that's really shaking has I had I can't tell you how many phone calls after many doctors without examining the president watched him climb up the stairs after getting out of the helicopter and going up to the balcony of the white. House and he got to the top of the SEPTA? He was gasping for breath he looked terrible I was inundated with calls and we all were sort of talking about this. So we don't know we don't understand and we don't believe that it's actually head-spinning here but. To say that anybody is going to be able to get what he got is out of the question nor should people nor should people get exactly what he? We don't know these are experimental drugs Brian.

Trump's Campaign Strategic Communications Director On Vice Presidential Debate

"Debate now concluded the one and only matchup between Vice President Mike Pence. California Senator Kamala Harris. Welcome back. Good evening from Washington. Jared Howe friend joined by Josh Cross ours well, Want to finish a thought on the conversation we were having before that break on the conversation we had with Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti about the notion of adding seats that the Supreme Court and play a little bit more. For you of that exchange between Pence and Harris When you speak about the Supreme Court, though, I think the American people really deserve an answer. Senator Harris. Are you and Joe Biden gonna pack the court if Jamie Cockney Barrett is confirmed? They've been 29 vacancies on the Supreme Court during presidential election years from George Washington to Barack Obama. Presidents have nominated in all 29 cases, but your party is actually openly advocating adding seats to the Supreme Court. Which has had nine seats for 150 years. If you don't get your way, this is a classic case of if you can't win by the rules, you're going to change the rules. Now you refuse to answer the question. Joe Biden has refused to answer the question. So I think the American people would really like to know if Judge Amy Cockney Barrett is confirmed to the Supreme Court of the United States, are you and Joe Biden? If somehow you win this election going toe Pack the Supreme Court to get your way. That was a question posed by the vice president. The Senator Harris, We've heard that back and forth, discussed it with a Biden campaign supporter in Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti. Let's hear from the Trump campaign, bringing Mark Slaughter, the director of strategic communications for the Trump campaign marked good to talk to you again. That's right. So one of the questions that has gone unanswered Not just in this debate Mark, but throughout this campaign is Tthe e idea. Tied to the Supreme Court is if the court were to strike down the affordable care act and arguments that will be held one week to the day after Election Day. What would happen to preexisting conditions? Thieve Ice president tonight again? Talked about a plan that is going to come out but details, timing none of that has come out. What is the health care proposal for voters that here before November 3rd. The president's been made very clear, and he has already taken executive action to make sure that people with preexisting conditions are protected. Should the court strike down the the Obama care law, and so they're going to continue to honor that pledge? The president's been absolutely clear about it, and it's something he plans to move it to to fulfill on. But he also doesn't think that Government. Health care is the answer and more broadly what they're talking about what they have been doing and taking action on is expanding People's access to private sector health care Whether it's through association plan, lowering the cost of prescription medicine. Those are the things that they're focused on doing. They know the government's not the answer. But we can take steps to make sure that people with preexisting conditions remain protected. Just to be clear. Pre existing conditions were enshrined in law right now, so any proposal that the president would would come out to replace the affordable care act would include a preexisting condition coverage and beyond that way, would there be? Is there a plan to sort of have a backstop a bridge between legislation should the court overturn The affordable Care act. Well, the president has already said, you know that his executive action is going to protect people with preexisting conditions. Should the court strike the law down, so they will be protected in any kind of transition. And and the president has made that absolutely clear from day one, and he'll deliver on that promise. Hey, mark. It's that Josh crests are here. The first part of the debate focused on the pandemic, The back and forth between Vice President Pence and and Kamala Harris in the campaign's mind is the pandemic the most important issue of the campaign. And how do you think the debate affected the deficit that the president and the vice president currently face in terms of handling the pandemic, according to public polling and perception. Well, I mean, I think the vice president was very well prepared because he's been there from day one, and he's led the Corona virus passport. He's been in the meetings. As he reiterated tonight. The president has followed every recommendation that has made made by Dr Fauci. And even and even Dr Fauci has confirmed that the that the actions that the president has taken saved lives. And when you look at the Biden plan, it's basically just a rehash. And, as the vice president said tonight, another case of Joe Biden plagiarism of just taking what President Trump is already doing and calling it his own plan, And so I think it was very strong on that. He he obviously mourned the loss of the folks who have already perished because of this virus. He's with. We're with the people who are recovering from this virus. But we also know that once again this is not an either or choice. You No, you listen to Democrats. And they basically say, if you don't hide in the basement, you're going to die.

2020 Vice Presidential Debate: Post Debate Analysis

"First, as always, when we have a debate, presidential, vice presidential or otherwise we bring in my friend Kpk political analyst Gary Dietrich, who joins us right now, Gary, Welcome to the show. They had good to be with you. And I look forward to a sharing with our callers. And perhaps even hear from them stopped on this. No doubt an important night, my friend. I think it probably is going to go down as one of the most. Important and watch Vice presidential debates. As you know, pad most people steer clear and find out which Channel V p debate it now. Not for me, not tonight. Well, you know for me, Gerry. Because we all know what happened in the presidential debate. Okay? But in the vice presidential debate, couple of things first thing I want to say is, I think we, um maybe learned a little bit more about about The candidates, and certainly one of the things I learned is it was a little different in the first one. It wasn't so testy, and that's college other names to do that, But But when, course, the moderator time, Susan Page us said to the University of Utah, where they held it, But she would say Thank you. Thank you. Thank you, And they would just keep talking as if she was not even ending it in. Both of them were guilty of that tonight. They just don't seem to follow the protocol. Anyone? Yeah, They certainly do a lot better tonight than last week. I mean, but that debt debt to me got annoying as well. But at least and then cure Point Palace is very well taken. It was a far far more substantive debate. Because again last Tuesday, a good third of it. You couldn't even make out what people were saying, because they were talking over each other so much. And then when that wasn't happening. I know the third of it was nothing more than name calling and accusing each other of stuff, right, right. I thought substance substantively. Far better. I know we want to dive into that. But I just think you know a farm or just say, I think helpfully conducted debate that we saw last week. Why a very extensive notes that I took care of it. Let's go to your notebook first. Gerry, what did you take away from this other than the things you've mentioned? Where there's wasn't much name calling, and it was a bit more substantive and it was in certain areas. But I tell you one observation I haven't we continue to have When it comes to politicians. They have an absolute art of avoiding questions, Gerry. It's amazing. It is an amazing talent. You know, sometimes it's so funny because it gets so extreme that they literally launch up on something completely unrelated. To what the question everyone's right. Never even come back, even attempt to do it right. You know, there's the art of bridging, which is you start with an answer that's related question, and you'll really get it. Bridge to something that you'd rather talk about. But somebody has just said I was just like, okay. Thanks for Thanks for speaking. I'd like to say this. All right, let me let me tell you one impression, and I came away from more generally. That and part of this is the nature of being an incumbent III, The vice president, who is currently in office, and part of it is and I have to say this, I felt like in this moderators case. Not a fair and thorough job of taking to cast. Some of Harris is history in elected office, which is extensive and buy even more, so I felt like the vice president Was on the defensive for most of the debate, particularly early on And and I felt like there could have been far more balance in saying, Hey, Well, you know the questions that's been raised about, you Know, X Y Z. When Joe Biden was in the Senate, we didn't hear anything about his voting. Many, many years of voting record Senate nor, frankly, honestly, really any kind of a hardball question about the years service vice president nor really questions that even within our own party have been raised about Senator Harris to me. I had a sense in which the questions themselves. What? Adequately reflective off some of the challenges that have been raised about those who currently or seeking the office. Not holding. I'm glad to hear you say that, Gary because I'm sitting there and I'm listening, and I'm listening very carefully in the moderator moderator plays a big part in this and you're absolutely right. From my perspective. I felt the same thing. I thought the questions were slanted. Um, the through the entire time all the way up until the end when we and I remember the presidential debate, Gary, I remember how the ending they manufacture this question about if you were to lose the election, Mr President, and would there be there smooth transition of power, and then we hear this. We hear this Susan page tonight at the end, and she asked both of them, and it's a slight on the president. He never said he was not going to leave the office piece. We never said anything like that. And there she is pressing this. What I consider to be a manufactured question about what's gonna happen. How would you handle that? Mike Panzer. How would you take? What would your response be? Comma Harris, you and Joe Biden. I am in total agreement. I thought that the questions were slanted, Gary. Well, and you know me, Pat and our listeners have known me for 20. Plus years on the station. You know, I I call them like I see him. I don't care what it was all going on, or Jerry about who was it doesn't matter in the national level, the exact game way, But I really came away feeling that And then there was and I do agree with you about that last question. Frankly, it's the only one she was able to oppose the moderate, she said. She had time for related to election integrity, and I really expected her to go to the integrity of the mail in ballots and these other questions. You know, our How long is the process could be could be drawn out. Could there be expensive court challenges. So take the time to go about whether the president's going to leave or not just seemed odd to me, particularly when everybody from Mitch McConnell on down it made utterly clear. That the president will be leaving if he gets voted out. Anyone if he isn't saying another thing about a question that I really found and I don't know how to use a word except disingenuous. It was the question about When Amy Cola coming back, so just highlighted? Yes, taking up picking up next week and it was about it was about what would you do? And it was a long and convoluted way to get to the Abortion question. What would you do that Mr Vice President in your home state of Indiana, if you'd get if you get approved, and if they throw out will be weighed. And if it goes back to the states, then what would you say Indiana should do what I said. He's not the governor of Indiana anymore. He's going to have absolutely no say in that policy making decision. It was so convoluted odd to me. I felt why don't you just ask you a few pro life or pro choice? Because that's really what the heart of your question is? Absolutely it is. And I believe the American people can see through that, Gary. I really do. Even if your vote he made up your mind. I mean, it's pretty obvious that you can see what's happening, and there was another point there. Where they were talking about late term abortions up until the last day and and pants and asked, you know about that. And there was no answer from Kamala Harris. There was no it was a redirection. It was abridging as you say, Hey, also asked if Judge Amy Kona bear it was going to be appointed. Would you be filling the Supreme Court room? She never answered it. He says to her. I want to make it very clear to the American people. I want them to note that she never answered the question that she says. Well, I'm gonna answer the question right now. Now I'm going to answer. The question can never answer the question. Never, and I listened. I was waiting for that. You know, I was waiting for the answer. It never happened. Yeah, that that and that is a very important issue. I mean, if there's three issues that people are very concerned about it last night, I happened to moderate a debate on I was in debate was a candidate forum of a number of different off was honored of moderate and you know, Congressman Tom McClintock. Well, Yeah, he he was headlining that candidate for him and added, he laid out very eloquently is senator as Congress. McClintock often does what he perceived to be the three major issues going report and it wasn't anything about specific foreign policy or even economic policy was packing the Supreme Court. It was about whether the filibuster is going to be thrown out in the Senate so that whoever has the majority will have complete and utter control. And and thirdly, whether state who is going to be granted to particular selected entities like Puerto Rico like Washington, D. C. That would then begin to quote unquote packed the Congress. And these are very, very significant issues for the future of the United States and our governmental process. None of that was raised tonight and to your point pat, which I think is well taken. Senator Harris refused, and there's no way to get around that refused to answer that question. And I thought that was very telling that you know that issue, which is a very central one right now and could have ramifications for many, many decades become was not answered.

"Let's go on and talk about the issue of racial just I just want the record reflect. She never answered the question. In the next debate. Joe Biden will answer the question. But I think the American people know the ants. Thank you, vice President. In March, Rianna Taylor, a 26 year old emergency room technician in Louisville, was shot and killed after police officers executing a search warrant in a narcotics investigation broke into her apartment. The police said. They identified themselves Taylor's boyfriend said he didn't hear them do that. He used a gun registered to him to fire the shot, which wounded an officer. The officers in fired more than 20 rounds into the apartment. They say they were acting in self defense, then of them have been indicted in connection with her death. Senator Harris in the case of Rianna Taylor. Was justice Done. You have two minutes. I don't believe someone I've I've talked with Briana's mother to make a Palmer And her family. And her family deserves justice. She was a beautiful young woman. She had as her life goal to become a nurse, and she wanted to become an E M T to first learn what's going on out on the street so she could be in Come in nurse and save lives, and her life was taken unjustifiably and tragically and violently. And it just it brings me to No. Eight minutes and 46 seconds that America witnessed. During which American man. Was tortured and killed. Under the knee. Of an armed A uniformed police officer. And people around our country. Of every race of every age of every gender perfect strangers to each other. Marched shoulder to shoulder arm in arm. Fighting. For us to finally achieve that ideal of equal justice under law. And I was a part of those peaceful protests. And I believe strongly. That first of all, we're never gonna condone violence, but we always must fight. For the values that we hold dear, including the fight to achieve our ideals, and that's why Joe Biden and I have said on this subject. Look, and I'm a former career prosecutor. I know what I'm talking about. Bad cops are bad for good cops. We need reform of our policing in America and our criminal justice system, which is why Joe and I will immediately banned choke holds and karate holds George George Florida would be alive today. If we did that we will require a national registry. The police officers who break the law. We will on the issue of criminal justice reform. Get rid of private prisons and cash bail and we will decriminalize marijuana, and Wei will expunge the records of those who had been convicted of marijuana. Thank you signed for leadership on a tragic, tragic issues, and your hair is like people in America, he said Over Harris. President Pence. Let me pose the same question to you. In the case of Verona Taylor Was justice done. You have two minutes uninterrupted. Will our heart breaks. The loss of any sense any innocent American life? And the family. Brianna Taylor has our sympathies. But I trust our justice system, a grand jury that refused the eminent. And it really is remarkable that as a former prosecutor You would assume that an impanel a grand jury looking at all the evidence, got it wrong, but You're entitled to your opinion, Senator. I think and with regard to George Floyd, there's no excuse for what happened to George Floyd. Justice will be served. But there's also no excuse for the rioting and looting. I'd follow I mean, it really is astonishing floor. Westbrook is with us here tonight in Salt Lake City. A few weeks ago, I stood at what used to be Her salon was burned to the ground. I, rioters and looters. And and Flora is still trying to put her life back together. And I must tell you this this This presumption that you hear consistently From Joe Biden and Kamala Harris. That than America's systemically racist that is, Joe Biden said that he believes that law enforcement has an implicit A bias against minorities. That is a great insult. To the men and women who serve in law enforcement. And I want everyone to know who puts on the uniform of law enforcement. Every day. The President trump in our stand with you. It is remarkable that That when Senator Tim Scott tried to pass the police reform Bill Brought together a group of Republicans and Democrats, Senator Harris, You got up and walked out of the room. Then you filibuster Senator Tim Scott's bill on the Senate floor that would have provided new accountability. New repeat resource is, but we don't have to choose between supporting law enforcement, proving public safety and supporting our African American navy rice for all of our minorities under President Trump's leader shaking baseball, we stand with law enforcement and we'll do what we've nice friends today. We thank you for your time in the lives of African Americans. Thank you for your prayers, unemployment, record investments and fight for school choice for all of you. Thank you very much Like to respond. Senator Harris. I will not sit here and be electric by the vice president. On what it means to enforce the laws of our country. I am the only one on this state. Was personally prosecuted everything from child sexual assault and homicide. I'm the only one on this stage was prosecuted the big banks for taking advantage of America's home.

"Vaccine and making sure that it will be free for all. That is the plan that Joe Biden has and that I have knowing that we have to get a hold of what has been going on and we need to save our country. And Joe Biden is the best leader to do that. And frankly, this administration has forfeited. Thank you say or write to re election based on this. Thank you, Senator Harris. Vice president Pence more than 210,000 Americans have died of covert 19 since February. The U. S death toll as a percentage of our population is higher than that of almost every other wealthy nation on Earth. For instance, our death rate is 2.5 times that of Canada next door. You head the administration's Corona Virus task force. Why is the U. S death toll as a percentage of our population higher than that of almost every other wealthy country and you have two minutes to respond without interruption. Susan. Thank you on. I want to thank the commission in the University of Utah for hosting this event on Senator Harris. It's a privilege to be on the stage with you. In our nation has gone through a very challenging time this year. But I want the American people to know. From the very first day President Donald Trump has put the health of America first. Before there were more than five cases in the United States, all people who had returned from China President Donald Trump did what no other American president had ever done. That was he suspended all travel from China, the second largest economy in the world. No Senator Joe Biden. Biden opposed that decision, He said it was xenophobic and hysterical. I can tell you having led the White House Corona virus Task forces. That decision alone by President Trump bought us invaluable time to stand up the greatest national mobilization since World War two. And I believe it's saved hundreds of thousands of American lives because with that time we were able to reinvent testing more than 115 million tests have been done. Today We were able to see to the delivery of billions of supplies, so our doctors and nurses had the resource is sport they needed and we began really before the month of February was hard to develop a vaccine and develop medicines and therapeutics had been saving lives all along the way. Under President Trump's leadership operation Warp speed. We believe we'll have literally tens of millions of doses of the vaccine before the end of this year. The reality is when you look at the Biden Planet reads an awful lot. Like what President Trump and I and our task force has been doing every step of the way and quite frankly, when I look at their plan that talks about advancing testing, creating new pp developing a vaccine. Um Looks a little bit like plagiarism. Which is something Joe Biden knows a little bit about. I think the American people know that this is a president who has put America first in the American people. I believe with my heart could be proud of the sacrifices they have made it safe. Thank yous American lives. Senator Harris would like to respond. Absolutely. Whatever the vice president is claiming the administration has done clearly it hasn't worked. When you're looking at over 210,000 dead bodies in our country, American lives that have been lost families that are grieving that laws and you know The vice president is the head of the task force. And new on January 28 how serious this was and then big thanks to Bob Woodward. We learned that they knew about it. And then when that was exposed The vice president said When asked. Well, why didn't you tell anybody? He said, because the president wanted people to remain calm. Let's go. I don't know, but this isn't sure I wantto Mr Vice President speaking, you 15 more seconds and then we'll give the vice president so I want to ask the American people. How come were you when you were panicked about where you're gonna get your next roll of toilet paper? How come were you when your kids were sent home from school, and you didn't know when they could go back? How coming to you when your Children's couldn't see your parents because you were afraid they could kill them. Miscued vice president Pence a chance to respond. Vice President You have one minute to recent, uh there's not a day gone by that. I haven't thought of every American family that's lost a loved one. And I want all of you to know that you'll always be in our hearts. And in our prayers. So when you say with the American people have done over these last eight months hasn't worked. It's a great disservice. The sacrifices the American people have made. The reality. I find that if I may finish Reality is doctor found, she said. Everything that he told the president in the Oval Office. The president told the American people now President Trump. I will tell you has boundless confidence in the American people, and he always spoke with confidence that we'd get through this together. But when you say it hasn't worked The doctor found she and Dr Burke's and our medical experts came to us in the second week of March, they said, if the president didn't take the unprecedented step of shutting down roughly half of the American economy We could lose 2.2 million Americans. That's the reality. Thank you. They also said to us if we did everything right, Susan, we could still lose more than 200,000 Americans. One life lost is many Susan, but the American people I believe deserve credit. The sacrifices that they have made putting the health of their family and their neighbors. First, our doctors, our nurses our first thank you, and I'm going to speak up on behalf of what the American people have done. Vice president Pence You were in the front row in a Rose Garden event 11 days ago. What seems to have been a super spreader event for senior administration, congressional officials. No social distancing. Few mask and now a cluster of corona virus cases among those who were there. How can you expect Americans to follow the administration's safety guidelines to protect themselves from Kobe? When you at the White House have not been doing so. Well, the American people have demonstrated over the last eight months. It was given the fax. They're willing to put the health of their families and their neighbors and people they don't even know first. President Trump and I have great confidence in the American people and their ability to take that information and put it into practice in the height of the epidemic..

Well, the American people have witnessed what is the greatest failure of any presidential administration in the history of our country. And here, the fax. 210,000 dead people in our country in just the last several months. Over seven million people who have contracted this disease. One in five business is closed. We're looking at front line workers who have been treated like sacrificial workers. We're looking at over 30 million people. So in the last several months had to file for unemployment. And here's the thing on January, 28th. Vice president and the president were informed about the nature of this pandemic. They were informed that it's lethal and consequence that it is airborne that it will affect young people. And that it would be contracted because it is airborne. And they knew what was happening. And they didn't tell you. Can you imagine if you knew on January 28th as opposed to march 13th what? They knew what you might have done to prepare. They knew and they covered it up. The president said it was a hoax. Minimize the seriousness of it. The president said. You're on one side of his ledger. If you wear a mask, you're on the other side of his ledger. If you don't And in spite of all of that, today, they still don't have a plan. They still don't have a plan. Well, Joe Biden does. And our plan is about what we need to do around the national strategy for contact, tracing for testing for administration of the vaccine and making sure that it will be free for all That is the plan that Joe Biden has and that I have knowing that we have to get a hold of what has been going on and we need to save our country. And Joe Biden is the best leader to do that. And frankly, this administration has forfeited. Thank you say right to re election based on this. Thank you, Senator Harris. President Pence more than 210,000 Americans have died of covert 19 since February. The U. S death toll as a percentage of our population is higher than that of almost every other wealthy nation on Earth. For instance, our death rate is 2.5 times that of Canada next door. You had the administration's Corona virus task force. Why is the U. S death toll? As a percentage of our population higher than that of almost every other wealthy country and you have two minutes to respond without interruption. Susan Thank you on. I want to thank the commission in the University of Utah for hosting this event on Senator Harris privileged to be on the stage with you. Our nation has gone through a very challenging time this year. But I want the American people to know that from the very first day, President Donald Trump has put the health of America first before there were more than five cases in the United States, all people who had returned from China President Donald Trump did what no other American president had ever done. That was he suspended all travel from China, the second largest economy in the world. Now Senator Joe Biden. Today We were able to see to the delivery of billions of supplies, so our doctors and nurses had the resource is fort they needed and we began really before the month of February was art to develop a vaccine and develop medicines and therapeutics had been saving lives all along the way under President Trump's leadership operation Warp speed, we believe we'll have Literally tens of millions of doses of vaccine before the end of this year. The reality is when you look at the Biden Planet reads an awful lot like what President Trump and I and our task Force has been doing every step of the way and quite frankly, when I look at their plan that talks about advancing testing, creating new pp developing a vaccine. It looks a little bit.

There is no physical greeting, but both wave to small audience members have been told they must wear masks for the duration of the debate. Senator Harris and Vice President Pence Thank you for being here. We're meeting as President Trump and the first lady continued to undergo treatment in Washington after testing positive for covert 19. We send our thoughts and prayers to them for their rapid and complete recovery and for the recovery of everyone afflicted by the Corona virus. Two campaigns in the commission on presidential Debates have agreed to the ground rules for tonight. I'm here to enforce them on behalf of the millions of Americans who are watching. One note. No one in either campaign or at the commission are anywhere else has been told in advance. What topics All raise or what questions I'll ask. This 90 minute debate will be divided into nine segments of about 10 minutes each. I'll begin a segment by posing a question to each of you, sometimes the same question, sometimes a different question on the same topic. You will then have two minutes to answer without interruption by me or the other candidate. Then we'll take six minutes or so to discuss the issue. At that point, although there will always be more to say we'll move on to the next topic. We want a debate that is lively. But Americans also deserve a discussion that isthe civil These are tumultuous times, but we can and will have a respectful exchange about the big issues facing our nation. Let's begin with the ongoing pandemic that has cost our country so much. Senator Harris. The Corona virus is not under control. Over the past week, Johns Hopkins reports that 39 states have had Mork over cases over the past seven days. And in the week before Nine states have set new records. Sen. Harris chief of staff reacts to Breonna Taylor case

"Is Jon Pierre Chief of staff to vice presidential candidate, Senator Kamala Harris and Korean, I just want to clarify your campaign chief of staff not these Senate chief of staff keep those clear. I want to get your reaction to what? Senator Harris is thinking tonight about the. Case for prosecutor herself she has by now I assume gathered the grasp some of the evidence of it. Yeah I I let me say Lawrence that we have to continue to support Brianna Taylor's mom. We have to certainly continue to say Brianna Taylor's name and here's the thing. Yes we have to ask for justice but we also need change. We lead to change the system a system that continually kills black boys, black girls, black men, black women who you know who are. Being murdered and not, and no accountability for for their murders is is is happening at all. So that's something that we have to continue to do is ask for change and you saw that in in Joe Biden's statement saying what what is it? What does police perform look like what his RIA manage reimagining police perform, and that is banning Chuck Coles really addressing Excessive Force and and talking about no knock warrants in a way that we can change that. So that is we have to meet the moment that were in and what Comal Harris was laying out is the contrast the contrast between Joe Biden Comma Hairs Donald Trump look look lawrence. We when the sun rises tomorrow, we will be forty days away from this election. And I know this sounds cliche and I know this is why people may think it's hyperbole but this is truly truly the most consequential election of our lifetime really generations because yes, we are in this pandemic of of of health care and this economic crisis. But also as we were just starting as as you started your show, the civil rights movement really in. This moment the largest civil rights movement in generations and you see a president that just continues to divide us and also justified us with hate and so that is what is at stake. Everything is at stake on this election. So yes, we have to continue to ask for justice but we also have to have change and that is something Joe Biden talking. About, from the beginning of this of this uprising that we are seeing the street that has been put mostly peaceful because we need to hear that message, which is we have to uproot systemic racism that is incredibly key in trying to change what is happening, and so you have to start doing that. That's that's what Joe Biden and Comma Harris's is putting

"Is she damn sure that how is Harris handling the intricacies of race as someone who identifies his black but also a South Asian ancestry is someone who says she's progressive, but also as a background that was sometimes criticised as a prosecutor. One of our greatest strength is to be able to navigate complex racial politics. Look, it wasn't in a sound, You know, Two years ago when I founded she the people to create political space to elevate the voice and power of women of color. We made an assertion, which is that The Democrats cannot win and build a multiracial, transforming democracy without women of color at the centre and that because our country was becoming A diverse place, certainly in California, But in swing states like Texas, Georgia, Florida and Arizona, the majority of people or people of color, you've gotta have someone who can speak to the experiences. Of different people and speak language of Solidarity Center dinner. Camel hairs demonstrated that that's a that's a qualification for leadership. Now in the Democratic Party, Paul Begala, let's bring you back into this conversation. I believe Paul Begala is still with us. How successful have Democrats been this week at saying what they would do if returned to power? I think they've been pretty successful. Think Senator Harris did the best job of that, as I said other speakers. Hillary President Clinton President Obama did a really good job taking down Mr Trump. But Senator Harris and then tonight I expect Joe Biden to make that affirmative case. What will you do, and that's what we do what we do for me. I think that Democrats last time and took their eye off the ball and talked too much about Donald Trump and too little about the voters. And I know that Senator Harris did a great job of that last night. I think Joe Biden will tonight. Amy Alison. Do you think that Democrats are making specific appeals to to people of color who sometimes feel African Americans, especially. They're taken advantage of at election time. Oh, yeah. I mean, look, look, 2016 would be hard to imagine Convention night that was so centered on black women and other women of color, and that's what we've what we saw last night. That's what we've seen. For the three nights, making the case directly to making the case directly to black women who are the most the strongest Democrats in the margin of victory women of color, the margin of victory and speaking out the names of different groups, Asian American Latino, indigenous and black women, invoking a common Legacy, powerful stuff and they're making the case got to stop you there. Amy Allison. Thanks so much. She's founder and president of she, the people and Paul Begala's Thie, author of yore fired the perfect Guide to beating Donald Trump. He was on Skype. Thanks so much. Thanks to you, Thank you. Paul was on skip by South Korea has been praised as a country that successfully controlled covert 19. NPR's Anthony Koon reports from Seoul on the causes an exhausted populist distrust of the government and a faltering economy In recent weeks, many Koreans got some vacation time. Some schools it started a new semester and the mood was cautiously upbeat. But this week New covert 19 cases of hovered near 300 today, mostly in and around Seoul over the weekend, the capital tightened restrictions on gatherings in on Thursday, it banned demonstrations of more than 10 people. Director of the National Institute of Health, Kwon Joon Hyuk said it a briefing on Tuesday that the government has gotta intervene fast touch it. She says that for the past few months, South Korea has kept new daily covert cases, mostly in the double digits. She calculates that each covert patient was infecting an average of less than one person. But this month, she says, each patient is infecting an average of about 2.8 people in such a little pat on the head. I would predict conservatively that the daily case number is unlikely to drop below 50 in a month, even if the virus is rate of reproduction drops back to July levels today. She adds that it's going to be harder to flatten this curve quickly, partly because people's attitudes have changed the room now due to social distancing fatigue. I'm afraid they're reinforcing social distancing measures may not have the same impact they had during the first wave. "Morning edition from NPR News. I'm David Greene in Los Angeles. And I'm Steve Inskeep in Washington, D C. Political conventions are not what they were, especially in this pandemic year. But the speeches on national television are still a big deal. Joe Biden addresses the Democratic Convention and the country tonight is running mate Kamala Harris spoke last night. So did former President Obama and other Democratic stars. We called up some voters at the end of the night and asked what they thought. Senator Chandler Harris Barack Obama just reminding us four years ago when Donald Trump was asked where we got the moon and you see now you're old. I would have liked to have seen more passion. We need to convince people of the urgency of what's at stake. Stacy Piggies of Plainfield, Illinois, and Shirley Hammond of Marietta, Georgia, both their supporting Biden. We can presume that a lot of Democrats have been watching this week. Surely some Republicans as well. Let's get perspective with Aimee Allison, the founder of the political organization, She the people, which works to elect women of color. Welcome to the program. Thanks for having me. We also have CNN contributor Paul Begala, who served as an adviser to former President Bill Clinton. Good morning to you. Good morning, Steve. Let's play a little bit of last night's proceedings. President Obama, former President Obama came on screen former presidents try to be a little circumspect about their successors. But President Obama did not hold back on this occasion. Let's listen. For close to four years. Now, he has shown no interest in putting in the work. No interest in finding common ground. No interest in using the awesome power of his office to help anyone but himself and his friends. Paul Begala. Were you surprised that the former president was that direct Astonished First. It's not his brand. He generally tries to be above partisanship, and there was nothing. Ah, nonpartisan about that speech. Second parties use their former presidents to validate their new nominees. In this time they used Obama to eviscerate. I thought that that was an enormous favour for Joe Biden. Because now calm alot last night, Senator Harris and tonight Joe Biden can't be more positive when you wheel out your biggest gun. To take down the incumbent president. It frees Biden to be a lot more positive tonight. Oh, that's interesting, and also normally the vice presidential nominee would be the attack dog to use an old metaphor in this case, Kamala Harris was was freed from some of that Roland could introduce herself a little more to the country. Very helpful. You know, I remember when Sarah Palin was introduced, she gave a great speech and mostly negative, though, just really tour apart. The Democrats. Camilla didn't have to do that either. This was I thought President Obama's speech was almost more of a 911 call than a speech, though it wasn't just doing political business. I really think he believes that our democracy itself is in danger. Or he wouldn't be putting all of his legacy on the line this way. Well, let's hear some of what Senator Harris had to say she told her story. She spoke of how she learned politics and also protest ng from her immigrant parents that I am here tonight is a testament to the dedication of generations before me. Women and men who believe so fiercely In the promise of equality, liberty and justice for all. Aimee Allison. Did Senator Harris do that job of introducing herself to that part of the country that didn't know her? She really rich really did so many people could see themselves in her life story, not only her story of being the child of immigrants and what that meant to her being the child. You know, Generation X being the child of civil rights activists and being in the black tradition. She evoked black women who have been fighting for generations for democracy and In that way. She brought complex and really powerful racial identities to bear and demonstrated why it was those reasons and those experiences. That she is uniquely it powerfully position to lead and unite a multiracial coalition when she introduced herself those of us who live in Oakland with in California, we're more familiar. With with her. But I think tonight tonight or last night was the night where the country realized that her on the ticket was going to be not only a game changer for us. Personally for women of color personally, but for Democrats nationally, they can also see themselves now and be reminded of how the sentiment and the spirits that goes behind Ah, highly enthusiastic electorate going to the polls. Is she captured that? How is Harris handling the intricacies of race as someone who identifies his black but also a South Asian ancestry is someone who says she's progressive, but also as a background that was sometimes criticised as a prosecutor. One of our greatest strength is to be able to navigate complex racial politics. Look, it wasn't in a sound, You know, Two years ago when I founded she the people to create political space to elevate the voice and power of women of color. "Medicine and abortion on demand. It's it's no surprise that he chose Senator Harris to be his running. Joining us now is Daniel Lippman. White House reporter at Politico. Thanks for joining us, Daniel Thanks for having me. Joe Biden finally made his pick for vice president. It's Senator Kamala Harris from California. She is the first black woman to be named to a major party, US ticket and potentially the first woman vice president If Joe Biden defeats President Trump In the election in November. Daniel tell us a little bit more about Senator Kamala Harris and what she brings to the ticket. Well, she's been a prosecutor for 26 years. Ah, mostly, and her city of San Francisco. Cisco. She is the daughter of and Jamaican immigrant on also should be the first Indian American ever elected to a vice presidential office. And you know she was the attorney general of California. So she has that kind of heart tough on crime approach, but she's definitely moderated over the years, and, of course, she ran for president last year and was not successful pulling out before. There is even the Iowa caucuses. Lot of people could remember to when she was running for president. And there was the Siri's of debates. And she actually took quite the swipe at Joe Biden for supporting busing back in the day. And, you know, she said, I was one of those girls that was affected by that. It became this flashpoint at that debate that really got her a little bit more name recognition. I know she made a lot of money through fundraising. But you're right. She didn't really last Throughout the rest of the process, But that's also something that Joe Biden kind of had to get over At the time. People were saying, Whoa! Nobody expected that from her. People were definitely surprised that she went so tough against him. Of course, she wanted to get a media moment in which he did, but it didn't start. God heard that at the time, but then it kind of backfired. When people realized that fighting and Harris is position on busting with similar associate wasn't AH going to draw too much of a distinction, and so But you did not prove to be a great campaigner. Her campaign shifted messages all the time. There was chaos in the staff, but that's unclear about how much that will be important now because Rumor. There isn't really any campaigning. It's kind of just doom and video conferences and phone calls and TV interviews and so on. And you know they'll have a speech or two. In terms of a major landmark speeches like once he accepts the VP slot at the Democratic Convention, and Joe Biden is the candidate for president. So he's really setting the lead on that, so she'll just have to rise to that moment. Now. Joe Biden does have a lot of past experience with Camilla even mentioned that in the statement that he released the first met comin through his son, Beau. They were both attorneys general at the time, and you know, he obviously respects his son in his opinion. So that's another kind of thing that they have in common. At least the familiarity there. That is going to be important for getting Biden comfortable a CZ, you know, with Harris's number two if you win on just during the 83 84 days left of this campaign on so he was personal, closer to Susan Wright was kind of the runner up. The former national security adviser, ambassador But he you know, everyone had thought that come on, come on. Harris was going to be the pick and escorts from wire to wire. She was the favorite, and it did not disappoint. Want to talk about age a little bit. Kamala Harris is 55. She's more than 20 years younger than Joe Biden. So she brings this a little more used to tea at the ticket. I guess you could say, how does that They're being a vice president. You know if things go well, it kind of sets you up to be the next Big leader, the next presidential candidate in the future. Should things be going well, so that's another thing that she can possibly add to the ticket. Yeah, So if heaven forbid, something happened to Joe Biden If he's in office, she would assume his job then and also she would be a favorite or the favorite to get the Democratic nomination 2024 since Finance indicated he won't run for a second term, and so We could be seen 12 years of Ah, Kamala Harris, A Z either VP or president. If all goes well for Democrats now, some potential downsides. She's not necessary. The favorite of the far left of the Democratic Party. What will supporters of Bernie Sanders and Senator Elizabeth Warren make of her? You know that's Ah concerned there and then also, we mentioned her. Experience as a prosecutor and a and the attorney general of California. You know, a lot of people aren't necessarily happy with the way she performed there as well. So those are also some concerns that we'll follow Senator Kamala Harris on this journey to Possible vice presidency. It definitely will. She's not seen of being a leftist. She's definitely a liberal progressive, but I think that kind of helps her with moderate suburban voters. It's gonna be hard for The Trump campaign to define her as being and took to the neck Socialists when she clearly is not and so the tag line, but they were giving her this afternoon, phony Camilla. Doesn't seem to be sticking doesn't have this thing as a crooked Hillary, which work very well last time. One of the things that have always kind of come up throughout. This is the enthusiasm for candidates. Obviously the president. The enthusiasm for his supporters is boundless, really. Joe Biden seemed to have a problem with some enthusiasm. But when Camilla first announced that she was running for president in Oakland, that was over 20,000 people there. Can she bring that enthusiasm back to this ticket? Think you know she's going to do her best. But this is not a going to be an enthusiasm election. It's going to be the referendum on Trump and his performance, especially with the current virus pandemic. On, so that's something that Democrats kind of have to get over and they're not in the field, getting AH, going door to door. And so it's going to be a lot of phone calls. A lot of zoom type means. Ah and so I think no one is too excited about, you know, voting for Biden but on his own, But there's a lot of Democrats who are very excited about getting rid of trump so that that's where they're enthusiastic about. Well, this next wrinkle in this presidential race just happens, so we'll be watching to see what is next. The exception. Harris is speech. Accepting the nomination at the Democratic Convention will be this next week. And then after that, on October 7th in Salt Lake City, Utah, the first vice presidential debate if it happens against Mike Pence, you know, we don't know if that's going to roll out. But there's gonna It's gonna all start heating up pretty quickly now as we get closer to the election, Daniel Lippman White House reporter at Politico, Thank you very much for joining us. These.

"I turned it on while reading it. The guy's insane he will do anything. This is not the time for a cupcake. This is a time for a woman. Who it were she your mom, you would listen to every single word, she said. She ambitious damn right. She's ambitious. So I want. I want someone ambitious. You don't get the things you need to get and get things done by not being someone that stands up to fools. And the Republican Party is full. Oh fools right now. Senator Harris is it is going to be In my opinion President United States other in four or eight years. And I just wish you were right now. There's there's a lot of really talented people in the Democratic Party, and they're beginning to understand the pragmatism. Sold with compassion. Is the new progressivism. Let me say that again. That pragmatism which is the only truth in the world. Pragmatism sold with compassion. Will replace liberalism and progressivism. Make it work. Don't promise Make it work. All right, 80 88. 10 is our phone number. You can text me at 415 80 88 10. Big news. Talk about an hour and 1/2 ago. That Joe Biden has picked calmly. Harris. I think it was his choice all along. Yeah. Did she pissed him off that baby? Hell, yeah, she did. So debate. Therefore, that's what I'd like to see him. Get down on the floor. I'm pretty sure Camel hairs could kick Pence's ass. In every possible way that Francis asked. Could be kicked. That's good outgrowth talk today. Hi, Dave. You're on kgo Chip Franklin. Yeah. All agreement I remember eight years ago. You invite made Paul Ryan, look Shellshock. Yeah, I remember that, too. Yeah, He's good. You know it. Chance going up against not only a woman but a strong black woman. I can't wait to see it. Yeah. I mean, it should be like a purview. I just can't wait to hear Start talking. Now she's the nominee will be hearing from our little bit later today, maybe during the show, but you know the thing that's the most impressive about her. Is, and I mean, I'll just speak for myself. I don't think woman. I don't think black. I think just a strong person that I want representing me. That will represent the things I believe in with the kind of passion And and resolve. That is necessary in the times that we live in. Jewelry. Good, strong woman. We need something like that to get our country back where it should be, not an embarrassment. What's in their needs as a mass kicking is in order. Thanks for the call. They appreciate it. Watsonville. Steve, you're on KGO. Thanks for the call. Yes, Chip. Thank you for taking my call. Kamala Harris. I met her About 10 years ago. She came to our county for a conference about Policing as a matter of fact, and spoke with our police chief here. In Watsonville, and that's probably one of the reasons wash our police chief of adopted the idea of community policing and not aggression and cameras on every officer. We've had only one death in the community. One shooting, uh, peaceful and are the populace including the 80% Latino populace, For the most part, likes our police force, as do I, And I am a progressive through and through. In addition of that Kemal Harris took on Corinthian colleges who screwed money out of my former partner in trying to get an education and a degree that didn't exist because there were no jobs. She took him to court one She also took on the this the several refinery important point Richmond and really let them have it in terms of their environmental violations. She is an outstanding person. She is a very useful 55. She has the intellect and the prosecutor general chops to take on both pence and Trump and probably tie them in a verbal knots, which it will be fun to watch the debates in the coming months and I could not be thrilled. I see with my original choice for president and I put her bumper sticker right below the Biden bumper sticker on the back of my car, and I am so proud to have that in the back window of my 2010 That's awesome, man. Thanks for the call. But it was great call and boy we should send that MP three to Kamala Harris. Some people push back. You know, she inherited a conviction rate for felonies around around 50% when she left. Well, no. And then in six years, I'm sorry in two years and went from 50% to 76%. Convictions of drug dealers increased from 56% 2003 to 74% in three years. How good washing when she ran for reelection and 07 she ran on a post. People are afraid to run against her. You know, people gonna push back about prosecutions and and prosecutorial zeal. Um You know you don't want people and I don't want people in prison for drug crimes. But I also don't want people racketeering either. And using drugs to buy guns to protect their business. That's different. The guy selling occasional nickel bags. Even different than guys on some cocaine to their friends. They're all against the law. But this is a This is a person whom with you to not mess with She's fair, and she's tough, and I mean that's what I want. Manus is this's exactly what I want. You know again. Pragmatism is the new progressivism is my in my opinion 80 88 10 phone number was checking with Bobby and Fremont. Bobby on kgo your term. Yeah, I was just thinking about everything. And actually, it's good to find made a Yeah, I think he actually made a mistake by picking Kabila. Harris. Why? I'm African American. Well, I'm African American myself, and I talked to a lot of my own people. And she just comes office. That's fake. You know, part of her saying what a couple in prison. Well, you take, for instance, on the back breakfast club when she did our interview there, and she talked about how she usedto in college. Listen, the to park in smoke pot and things like that that you know that kind of coming off. It's fake. And an African American less You, did you? Did you ask her? Did somebody ask her about the quote some to pop lyrics. McDonogh wasn't honest to party to college. Well, wait a second. Wait a second. Wait, Bobby to puck and exactly hardcore gangster. Okay, say listening to pox not liked. You know, like it's like you could name 100 of my can't but it I mean, I listen to to park that's that's pretty easy. Listen to with a joint. I mean, so that she couldn't go way out on a limb trying to be something she's not by saying that I needed to college when I was even a rat burger. All right. I have to hear the interview. Dude s so if she lied trying Tio, impress you or impress other people, Because, you know, I don't know what you're trying to say. She's not black. Enough. Is that it? Not now. I'm not saying that I'm not saying that at all. I'm just saying she just comes off fake. That's what I said. That's all. I'm saying. A lot of people. I mean, I think Joe Biden would. It didn't better off without not even picking her to be honest with you. I mean, Joe Biden is very predictable. Everybody knew that he was going to pick her just because she's a woman and she's African Americans. They know there were five other African American. There were five other women of color. That were up there. Tammy Duckworth's pretty badass. Val Demings used to be run the Orlando Police Department. I mean, these are all these women are formidable women, and you know, you could say she's fake man. But you know an interview on a radio show, where she said she smoked pot in a different Decades. And you think she did that? I don't matter to me. Do I want somebody that can defeat this guy in office right now and bring our country backto normal? You know, Doctor one normal. How many people raise your hand If you want normal again, all right? About that. Make America normal again. Right? 80 88 10. We'll talk to you guys. Next hearing kid. You.

"Governor Ralph Northam remains an office. Mike conservative Virginia. Friends reading mortified. Over what's going on in their state, especially those who've lived their entire lives and never thought they'd see what they're seeing right now. You've got the Lieutenant governor who are obviously would like the governor to resign. So he can become the governor. And then you've got reaction from everybody and their brother, including the five on FOX. He's the governor. He's in a singular position, and he's clearly lost moral authority in part because and I don't say this as a pun dance or poor dancing that he did at that news conference where he comes out and apologized, and it looks like he's not a pilot. He says, oh, it wasn't me. But of course, the apologizing left the clear impression that it was him. And then the whole thing about black face with the Michael Jackson thing. I mean that was that could have been Saturday Night Live, right? So it's the idea that he has totally done a bad job of representing himself. But I think on a larger scale there's so much politics involved here. The people who broke the story of far right-wing website. Clearly was given a a tip because of the position that he had taken on pro-choice issues. And then Secondly that northern himself seems to have a lack of appreciation for exactly how awful this was because he says this happened in the nineteen eighties. "On this cold morning across a lot of the poor vortex impact in America, Senator John Cornyn of the great state of Texas Senator Cornyn. Good to have you welcome. Thank you. Good to be back. I got to begin with a Wall Street Journal story this morning, entitled a bad judges deal. It's actually on the op-ed page, and it reports that the three ninth circuit nominees from last year. Daniel Collins, Kenneth Lee and Patrick Bouma. Tae have not been renominated because the president's White House counsel. Pat, sip baloney is dealing with Diane Feinstein and Kamala Harris, the Democrats want to pick a new judge from the White House last one from their own list, any third consensus nominee that would be a disaster John Cornyn neuron the judiciary committee. What do you know about this? Well, I I'm not familiar with these particular judges off the top of my head. I do know the president renominated fifty one a judges that had been sent back after the end of the one hundred fifteenth congress in December which is the rule, but I'll certainly look into. This course to the home state senators are not irrelevant. But did you know that chairman grasping? I think chairman Graham now will not give home state senators veto via the blue slip over over the nominees. So that's something. I. I'll need to look into. The chairman Grassley told me last year when he was chairman that they had tried everything to get a deal done with Dianne Feinstein, and they couldn't get one done. And so the president nominated three great originalist, and I'm here to tell you they are three great one of them, by the way is a gay man. And so it'd be the first gay conservative nominated in the ninth circuit. But it's what the ninth circuit needs three hardcore originalists, and so when I read this I said, this is a key part of the McConnell Cornyn legacy. You guys changed the face of the federal courts, and the ninth circuit is the last bastion. Well, the four second the DC circuit or out to lunch to the ninth circuit is the one that needs saving the most why in the world. Do we owe anything to Dianne Feinstein? She tried to take out Cavanaugh illegitimately. Well, you've got my you've got my attention. And I certainly will look into it. And now Senator Harris is running for president. She's running hard left. She's she's not doing do anything upset her base. And so I suspect that may be a factor in all of this. But you got my attention. I'm gonna look in. Into it. And I agree with you. We we shouldn't we shouldn't cave to those who want to get the president of your office path of of. Nominating and us confirming originalist. I don't do this very often. But I got David Perdue to commit to call the president on this. Will you do the same thing John crappy to thank you? Because I don't think he knows honestly ninth circuit nominees. That's way below what he's focused right now. We're focused on Venezuela where I'm about to to change my attention to. And so I don't I don't misunderstand it and Pat sip baloney may not know what this means the basis of DC lawyer. I don't know. Only a good guy. You know, Senator Cornyn. I met him the other day at the White House, but good things about him. So look forward to working with him out certainly talk to him and the president is well, yeah, this is like the third rail of the base. This is the ninth circuit on the circuit courts is the third rail, and I can't believe and by the way, I think it's fair to state those three would have been confirmed. But for Jeff flake, am I right? That's right. Yeah. Jeff Jeff held up voting on any of these on the floor. And you knew he know our margin was so thin. We couldn't do it without him. So yeah, you're exactly right. Jeff flake owns the disruption in these people's lives and people should remember that he is not they Representative of the center, right? Conservative judicial philosophy Senator Cornyn. Let's turn to Venezuela. The Washington Post reports this morning that Madeira has unleashed the death squads thirty-five people murdered in their homes and in the streets of the slums of Caracas eight hundred and fifty gone missing. If we don't move quickly more will die scores. More will die and hundreds more will be imprisoned in disappeared. Do you support military intervention along with Brazil and Colombia now? Well, we had the worldwide threats hearing both open and classified yesterday where we got to talk to our intelligence community leaders about Venezuela mung other things I am concerned that we're late to the game. And although I'm proud of the fact that President Trump and the vice president sided with the opposition against Madero who's been a disaster for Venezuela. This is an ominous development. And certainly we need to we need to protect those people who in reliance upon our support for the opposition have stuck their neck out and now endangered their lives. So I I certainly think we need all hands on deck. I'm not ready to declare war or or military intervention. But windy need to protect these people. Who relied on us in good faith when ambassador Bolton walked out with a yellow pad that had on it five thousand troops to Colombia. That's an army combat brigade that doesn't mean at ground invasion, that means helping the Brazilians and the Colombian secure the legitimate leader of Columbia, one gliders authority bring back Venezuelan supreme court, and then get the hell out of the country because they can run it. Right. Right. Right. No. You're you're exactly right. This this invasion of Venezuela. But we do need to protect these people who've relied on us in good, faith, and and protect the rights of the Venezuelans to electoral. Leader in a free and fair election. Senator Cory let's turn to the conference committee which meets today. I am an advocate of going big. I know Senator Graham is I would put border security regularization for ten million not just dock and TPS e-verify mandated at the end of family migration rights for those who are regularized and now Senator Graham wants to add the debt limit and repeal the sequester. I actually think there's no reason that big deals can't get done in three weeks. We saw the government move after nine eleven pretty rapidly. What do you hope happens, or if they get very close they can extend it a week to one weeks the arts or to think, what do you think should happen? Well, we we need we need a solution here. And I don't think it's all that complicated. I'm happy to go big. We tried to do that in February right after the president was elected with his very generous offer to offer a pathway to citizenship for one point eight million Docker recipients in exchange for eliminating the diversity lottery. Visa and chain migration. Democrats. Turn that down. But we need we need to solve the immediate problem. But if it takes us going big to do it, and we can get some other things that we want to get done along with it. I'm fine with that all support that now, my friend. Mark Levin was railing against leader McConnell, who I think has saved the constitution. I think he is probably the greatest leader of the Senate that the Republicans have had in my lifetime. And so I disagree with Mark on this. But he's afraid of people going big, and I don't think the basis there. I think Mark is an outlier on this though, the smartest outlier there is I just don't think the base demands deportation. They want border barriers and they don't much care about regularization with a long path to citizenship for non violent people. I just don't think that's a deal breaker, if they can get other things that they want like e-verify, are you do you sense that with me center, I'm much closer to your position on that? Hugh. I do think the president's been extraordinarily generous. He does want border security. We must insist on that. One of the complications of this process is this is a conference committee of the appropriations committee. So they don't have the authority to go to you know, to immigration reform writ large. But that may take us there. If we can't get this immediate problem fixed here by February fifteenth, I'm certainly open to it. Now, that's interesting because you're very close for the leader, obviously or the whip until this year got to run for reelection when she will win handily, and we will tell everyone in Texas, by the way, what's the website for the campaign Senator John Cornyn dot com. And so everyone listening in Houston in Dallas right now in San.

"And I'm Rachel Martin. Good morning. Well, the planet Senator Harris is talking about and that she supported at one that was proposed by Bernie Sanders, and it would be a national single payer program that would replace the whole private insurance system. Here's how she described it believes the solution. And I'm and I'm actually feel very strongly about this is that we need to have Medicare for all. Well, listen, the idea is that everyone gets access to medical care, and you don't have to go through the process of going through an insurance company having them give you approval going through the paperwork, all of the delay that may require. So we'll be like, you know, my mother everyone will get a Medicare card just like the elderly do now and doctors would sign an agreement to participate in the program. But as you point out, this is the same thing as a single payer system and on the one hand you can hear the word Medicare fraud. That sounds great. But it it's it would actually be a far more substantive overhaul of the current system. And the big question is how how to be paid for right? Yeah. That is the big question and Senator Harris didn't say in that town hall how she would pay for it. And when I asked her staff, they didn't respond right now in the country. We spend more than three trillion dollars a year on healthcare that includes a private payer insurance and Medicare, Medicaid this Sanders proposal that she has back. Didn't actually put in a pay for. Although they had thumb proposals out there, including a tax increase on employers that would be similar to the social security tax proposed in four percent income tax increase on everybody. And then there's a variety of proposals to increase tax on high earners on the rich to help pay for this program. But it's a huge amount of money. We should know camel Harris's campaign since tried to suggest that she's open to other more modern proposals as well. But can you explain how the other candidates who thrown their hat into the rain how they're coming down on us? Yeah. I mean, what's interesting is how much more popular than mainstream. This has become Senator Harris backed the Sanders proposal so did Senator Kirsten gillibrand Elizabeth Warren. They all cosponsored that Bill, and what's interesting here is also that there are three female senators all coming down in favour. There are two men who are billionaire businessman who are opposed. And I think that comes from where the tax. Increases are Howard Schultz, the founder of Starbucks. He called this an anon- unamerican proposal that you can't get rid of the insurance system. And at the taxes are punitive Mike Bloomberg he said that the Medicare for all plan would quote bankrupt. So it's tricky when you talk about that kind of tax increase, even if it's replacing what people are paying now for insurance premium, right? We should just say Shilton Bloomberg Cap'n officially declared yet, but we await their decisions. How how does the issue Paul with the American public? The concept is very popular more than half the people in a Kaiser family foundation poll last week said they approve they favor Medicare for all. But once you get into the details, and you talk about the tax increases that popularity starts to wane. So it's all going to be in the details. And how people communicate what their program is NPR's, Alison kodjak, thanks so much. Alison. Thanks, rachel. You know, it's cold in Chicago when TV video shows the railroad tracks on fire steel rails contract and exceptional cold. So to warm them up transit workers stretch rope soaked in kerosene along the tracks, and they burn it. The temperature in Chicago was eighteen degrees below zero this morning, and it was even cold rouse. Where what's it feel like to be in that cold NPR's, David Schaper found out? So you don't have to..
