Nikki Haley criticizes Trump and says he has no future in the GOP

"So called trumpism, the partisan divide in Washington and across the nation driving the expected outcome of this impeachment trial. Now 2020 contenders are making their voices heard. ABC is Jonathan Karl tells us what a GOP heavy hitter just said. Nikki Haley is not only a former top official in the Trump administration, somebody who has been very close to Donald Trump rarely criticized him, is considered a leading contender for the Republican presidential nomination, she said in an interview, just published. In politico, she said. Trump let us down. He went down a path we shouldn't have, and we shouldn't have followed him. That's a decisive break Donald Trump from somebody who was considered quite close to Donald Trump. That is significant, but it doesn't mean he will be in peach or convicted. I should say they need 17 Senate Republicans to go along with all 50 Democrats, and right now, the dims Are not ruling out, invoking the 14th amendment to keep former President Trump from ever holding office again. Now, the 14th amendment can keep people who have engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the United States from holding office. It was a measure originally aimed at former confederates after the Civil war. Center is also something that's being talked about in democratic circles. As we heard from Massachusetts Senator Ed Markey. Let's go to the current administration,

Democrats and GOP each pick up a Senate seat

"Lot of eyes around the White House race, and they are, but that is not the only race tonight that will affect what goes on in Washington. In the coming years. The BBC sherry small keeping an eye on the Senate, sherry Good. Good evening Been Democrats trying to flip the GOP controlled Senate 35 seats up for election twice a CZ many Republicans a seats up for election than Democratic seats, according to the AP. So far, they're eight wins for Republican seven seats going to Democrats. Among those Democratic winds include three New England senators. Massachusetts Senator Ed Markey. No surprise there also no surprise for New Hampshire incumbent Senator Jeanne Shaheen and incumbent Senator John Reed of Rhode Island. But these early numbers what they don't include are about a dozen highly watched tight races where the seats could flip. That includes up in Maine. Incumbent Senator Republican Susan Collins is being challenged by Democrat Sara Gideon, now in the House, current Democrat controlled House. I should say Republicans, they're trying to win back. Some of those seats that they lost black back in that blue wave of the 2018 mid term election right now, looking at the AP map. We're seeing 40 seats in the house so far. Going to Republicans and 70 seats so far going to excuse me reverse at 41 seats going Tio Democrats 70 seats so far going Tio Republicans in the early numbers that have come in, we'll keep an

"And when those big numbers of voter turnout, either by mail in person or the early voters that may or may not help some of the other candidates along the tickets across the country. It's not just the presidential race that's at stake tonight. It is also a balance of power in Congress of the BC sherry Small is following that sherry. Already some races have been declared. That's right. We're watching it really closely. And you know, no matter who wins the presidency. If he can't get anything past in Congress, it's gridlock on Capitol Hill. As we know, we do know. In Massachusetts Senator Democrat Senator Ed Markey has won his third term that was as expected Republicans they're trying to hold on to a majority in the Senate. The GOP has 23 seats to defend this election. That's almost double the Democrats 12 seats that are up for re election. The Democrats, Ah have to gain at least 3 to 4 seats in orderto flip the Senate. Only three seats. It bite and wins because he would then be the tiebreaker where there's going to be a problem or where it's. You know, we're looking at very closely as a possible problem up in Maine, where Republican Senator Susan Collins is in a very tough fight toe hold onto her seat being challenged by Sarah, Giddy on there. And the Senate races were watching right now. Alabama, Arizona, Colorado, Georgia, Iowa, Michigan, Montana, North Carolina, South Carolina, Texas, These air all some high profile races that we are watching, and so far right now, I'm seeing that. "Okay. Thank you. Well, I'm supportive of. Mayor Walsh's decision to increase police accountability which he has just announced because I think a good cop is a backup in a system with accountability and the protests that we've seen in the wake of the murders of Judge Floyd Brianna Taylor in so many others. Their calls for justice in. So I'm glad to see that the city of Boston has responded to the calls from protesters for police reform, and I think that those steps are important but we also need. All steps as well because there can be no true justice without police accountability. We need to end qualified immunity so that bad officers are held accountable and victims of excessive force can get justice and I've introduced legislation with ion. Presley in the Senate. Partnering with her in the House to do just that I think we need to create a national police misconduct registry to collect better and more accurate data of these misconduct and use of force. We need to stop problem officers from changing jurisdictions to avoid accountability We need to end racial and religious profiling we need to band. No knock. Warrants. In in many instances, we need to ban. Oh. Colts and Nichols kind killed. Eric Garner. So we we need real fundamental change in criminal justice system where five percent of the world's population have twenty five percent of all the prisoners in the world of behind bars in the United States not Russia? Senator in the United States twenty, five percent of all. We need fundamental criminal justice reform. We have about thirty seconds left in that thirty seconds we are in a global pandemic and it has fundamentally shifted something in. So many of us in our last thirty seconds senator what is something that has fundamentally shifted in you? I would say that. It's very clear who the essential workers are. They're Black Brown, the immigrants and and that they are much more exposed and Chelsea is a good example with this very high incidence, but they're so close to the pollution underlying asthma's lead to more vulnerability. For Corona virus, we own those essential workers help and when we win. This election, next January, we have to put those essential workers right at the front of the line to get the benefits which have earned by helping all the rest of us. They can't zoom to work most of us can they had to show up and take the risks sent. Now we have to pay them back of giving to help the Dany for their families. Senator. "So let's stay with that because you're challenger Kevin O'Connor says that by supporting things like the green new deal, you are alienating moderates and conservatives which contributes to gridlock in Washington you just mentioned the vice president in his debate with President trump he did parse his support for environmental reform versus the specific green new deal pretty carefully that show that O'Connor has a point. No it doesn't because He supports Donald Trump for president of the United States and he and trump is the denier in chief and the last thing we need is Massachusetts the send another vote to Washington to help donald trump and his climate policies which by the way is climate policies out rollback fuel economy sentence rollback energy efficiency standards, rollback protections for the environment build the Keystone Pipeline Ram through pipelines through the State of Massachusetts of where they there is overwhelming public objection to them. So that's where Kevin O'Connor has planted himself politically as a supporter of of Donald Trump in his policies whereas the Democrats are united. On climate change we believe in the science we believe that urgent action must be taken and and the vice. President Biden actually has asked Alexandra Casio Cortez and the sunrise movement to be partners with him in drafting the the the the new proposals which he has released, which by the way include. Reaching one hundred percent renewable electricity a by the at twenty, thirty five, which is very consistent with the green new deal. So enormous progress has been made where united we believe in the science we believe. That we need to take urgent action and we believe that we can create millions of new jobs of the Republicans are trying to defend the old coal burning oil generating a issues. We're trying to create a whole new generation of renewable energy jobs, the millions, and to make sure that minority communities frontline communities are at the front of the line to get those jobs and to have the new facilities be constructed in their communities. So we will Kevin O'Connor, your opponent does say he doesn't support all of trump's policies, but we will press him on that. When we have the conversation with him, I wanNA talk about a different policy issue. There is daylight between you and he on we've been talking about police and police reform for the rest of the hour earlier on the show O'Connor says that police have been undermined by calls around the country for disarming and defunding you have called for disarming polices some weapons such as tear gas rubber and plastic bullets. And that has angered police unions including the Massachusetts Police Association which used to support you. But now accuses you of being quote out of touch with the American people and quote where do you stand on law enforcement and police reform today and we we have about three minutes left in our conversation..

"A year ago polls showed Massachusetts Senator Ed Markey down double digits in the fight to protect his Senate seat from Democratic challenger Congressman Joe Kennedy some prognosticators. Thought he might just step aside while he didn't instead Markey beat Kennedy by eleven points in last month's primary. Thanks in large part to a wave of support from young progressive voters and a savvy social media operation next up general election and a challenge from Republican attorney Kevin O'Connor. Speaking to both Senate candidates here on the show beginning today with Senator Ed Markey Senator Welcome Back Radio Boston. Thank you thanks for having me on? So senator market. You've in Congress for over four decades. Now, I think it is fair to say that your public persona as an elected official in both the Commonwealth of the country is markedly different than it was say six years ago or twelve years ago. Do you feel you have started a new chapter? Are you different in some way? Well I don't I. Don't think that my position on issues has changed at all. So for example I've been. The leader in Congress on climate change for years you know the The author of the legislation increase the fuel economy standards of the vehicles which we drive, which is still the largest single reduction in greenhouse gases of any. Law of a pass in any country of the author of the law increasing efficiency of appliances no air conditioning refrigeration of also a dramatic reduction in greenhouse gases it obviated the need for upwards of two hundred. coal burning to ever have to be built in our country. So I'm very proud of my work over the years What happened? was that when I introduced the green new deal with Alexandria or Cossio Cortez in order to start a movement to make sure that we took the urgent action, which is necessary to deal with the crisis, it, it created much more political attention. To the issue, but it didn't reflect. A. Change at all in the views that I had expressed, and in fact, with certain extent, my achievements in the past were the basis for a whole new younger generation of activists join in a partnership with me in this race because they knew that there was an authenticity to what I had been doing throughout the course of my entire career on that issue and same thing. Guns to gun safety legislation on healthcare provision. So so I think to a certain extent it's not so much reinvention as much as being rediscovered as someone who had worked on these issues over the years. Is that Is that enough to okay let me backtrack. We are in a time of such generational disconnect that the phrase. Okay. boomer right is one of the phrases of the last couple of years and yet your support. So strong among young people is you're you're backing of the green new deal is that enough to explain that or do you think there is something else going on? That is worth paying attention to and learning from I think that the green new deal is a part of it but I think that the more that young people came to learn about. My successful efforts to beat the NRA to have the CDC. Do Research at on the causes of gun violence and ask Society for the first time in its beginning this year and I was successful on that.

If Republicans fill Ginsburg's vacancy, Democrats should pack the court — and more

"Democrats in the Senate say that Republicans like Mitch McConnell and Lindsey Graham are violating the Republican precedent, they said in 2016 when they said no Supreme Court vacancy should be filled. In an election year. Devil BBC. Suzanne Songs will caught up with Massachusetts Senator Ed Markey, who agrees with that statement. We are about to engage in historic battle on the floor of the United States, Senate and Marquis says Democrats are ready for it. The Democrats will use any procedural tool, which we have to slow down the nomination way will fight as hard as we can, he says. When Democrats controlled the Senate, they'll abolish the filibuster and add more justices to the Supreme Court. And he doesn't think Republicans understand the electoral consequences of rushing to fill the seat if they violate their own principles, saying that there should be no new Supreme Court justices in an election year in the American people simultaneously see what's at stake. "It's like holy crap dude you know Joe Kennedy is challenging your guy I mean this guy is young he's handsome. What Kennedy's faults and how are you going to go defend marquis? And walls looked at me and said, Joe Kennedy has no weaknesses. He's young. He's handsome. He's rich. He's a Kennedy and he's a nice guy. You know what his problem is and this election is going to be he's not add markey. And I thought it was sort of a great answer because it kind of. First of all, he gave me that answer without even hesitating but he had a lot of confidence that his guy could rise to the moment and that his job was just to ensure that voters really got to know Ed Markey and that was Markey's big deficit going into this race was a poll showed that a lot of people didn't know who he was in spite of the fact that he'd served so many years and I think what marquee managed to do in the course of this campaign was convinced will obviously he did it to commence enough people who he was and. And that's one of the reasons he won. In. Her Shell. I'm sorry I was just GonNa. Ask. That the resources to show him where witnesses are for him. Absolutely, I, agree that this campaign. In an opportunity to say this is so I am this is what I stand for and this is what we'll do. But if you look at the results Kennedy one in most of the gateway cities in places where Lynn Chelsea. Lowell Lawrence places where you have a lot of poverty. We have a lot of immigrants. We have a lot of pain right now because of the coronavirus pandemic and the economic struggles at that Rod. So I I think there's a lesson there for him to write that. You know maybe he needs to pay attention and I'm not saying he hasn't pay attention because he's been a leader in some on immigration. For instance, he has led on so many gration policy issues but I'd be curious as to how he approaches these places out going forward. And I think this assess job now Sorry exactly that you know he spoke about racial justice in places like Hyannis and Brookline and those places where he racked up and that's exactly where he should be talking about this stuff. "Now, most of the results have come in, but we're still waiting to hear about the fourth congressional district where Brookline Select Woman Jesse Murmell and Newton City Councillor Jake Aachen gloss are neck and neck in their quest to succeed Congressman Joe. Kennedy Secretary of the Commonwealth Bill Galvin just. Recently. Announced in the last little bit of. That he's seeking court to authorise local election officials to continue counting a number of ballots in that race including Malan votes we will talk about that more later in the show, but let's focus right now on the night's biggest moments and the reason Kennedy's seat is open incumbent Senator Ed markey successfully fought off a challenge from Congressman Joe Kennedy. Speaking to reporters earlier today, there's an old saying in Massachusetts politics. that. It's great to have young people behind you, but they just don't vote. In Massachusetts. Well. We put that old saw to rest yesterday. Here for more is. Ours Anthony Brooks. Welcome Anthony. Heidi's Yana. So, let's jump right to it. Why did Marquee win? Well I mean I think he touched on a point they're talking about those young people they voted in big numbers yesterday and it really helped fuel markey's victory over Kennedy by more than ten points I think Marquis also did a really good job of sort of. Himself as a progressive in this moment when progressivism especially in Massachusetts especially in Massachusetts Democratic primary you know what carries a lot of weight and his alliance with Alexandria causing cortes really cast him as. Really cast him as that progressive on the other side you know it was up to Joe Kennedy to really make a case while quite marquis should be fired and I think for a lot of voters he just didn't do that. So, let me ask you a lot of incumbents won last night Anthony. So what does that do to this idea that this is about youth insurgency? Well, I mean arguably Markey's case the youth and progressivism and all those progressive political groups from the sunrise movement to people who care about the agenda put forth by Okasha Cortez I mean it was fueled by by Progressive Energy and a lot of ways. But if you're talking about Ritchie Neil out in the first congressional district where he was challenged by Alex Morris, you know the progressives didn't carry the day out there and yeah one of the big story lines from last night is all the incumbents across. Massachusetts all the members of Congress in the Senate one there one, their primary so Yeah. In that sense incumbency one progressivism upsetting the apple cart not so much. Ed Markey defeats Joe Kennedy in Massachusetts primary, ending Kennedy family winning streak

"Sure. The big election is November but the election day to watch at least in Massachusetts. This year was the Democratic primary on Tuesday night, which saw congressman Joe Kennedy the third. Yes. That same Kennedy family wage rare intraparty challenge to incumbent Senator Ed Markey. At. First it was a race about generational change and considered Kennedy's to lose. But that changed that generational argument was not as potent here as it has been elsewhere like when now congresswoman Ion Presley pulled off her surprise win in a nearby Boston district just two years ago. Marquis touted his left leaning Boniface including his green new deal sponsorship in the Senate and lockdown a coveted endorsement from congresswoman Alexandra Okay Cortes among other progressive groups plus Marquee Social Media Strategy deployed memes and Tiktok helping to recast the seventy four year old Washington veteran as an extremely online figure popular with younger voters in the end. Marquee delivered a blow. Some are calling the end of. The Kennedy Political Dynasty I'm not sure I agree with that. I very much expect Kennedy to remain in public life and likely run for another office. Again down the line after all, he's only thirty nine but Kennedy's loss on Tuesday was a i. a Kennedy has never before lost in election in Massachusetts. Marquee will now face a Republican this November though the seat is still considered safely. Democrat. So, let's get to the point. It's almost a rarity these days an incumbent, actually fending off a younger primary challenger with a potent last name, but Ed Markey did it. And that is the point four September second twenty

Boston - Ed Markey faces Joe Kennedy in Massachusetts primary

"Day voting underway for hours now Congressman Joe Kennedy looking to unseat long time incumbent Democrat Senator Ed Markey, and a highly watched race, BBC's Karen Regal is with a Kennedy campaign and joins me now live, Karen, I think, How did we watch may be an understatement, Laurie. I mean, I saw this race on CBS this morning. I saw it on the Today show. I'm seeing it on the evening news on CNN and I started in person this morning at the Nelson School outside Worcester. Because all those national networks will not decide this race. The voters here will and you've got Kennedy supporters standing up. The required distance away from the polling place and you've got, you know a slow but steady flow of voters making their way into the Nelson School here in Worcester, where Joe Kennedy was outside asking for their vote. I mean, the polls fluctuated shows that Marquis a headbutt! In the end, it appears to be a fairly tight race. It's a weird thing. Older voters I've talked to here seem to be leaning towards Kennedy. They say they trust the Kennedy family. Younger voters are saying it's They like Ed Markey's progressive politics, So they're sticking to it. The older guy who's been in office for quite a long time. Joe Kennedy is saying he's optimistic. Joe Kennedy is saying he's looking forward to this evening. Joe Kennedy says he's exhausted, but Joe can be also telling me He is confident about the results heading toward the end of this race. I asked him if he could change one thing over the course of the year since he declared, what would it be, he said, But quite frankly, he'd get rid of this pandemic so that everybody would be well and he could. Boston - Congressional hopeful Becky Grossman understands challenges families face

"Let's go back to Primary day, the race in the fourth Congressional district, It is crowded in the Democratic primary seven Democrats are running to fill the seat left behind by Congressman Joe Kennedy as he faces off against the longtime incumbent Democrat, Senator Ed Markey in the Senate primary. Becky Grossman is running in that fourth congressional district. She is in the final stretch as they all are. She's in her town or she's in the city of Newton today over the Bigelow Middle School polling station Sherry Small caught up with her Democrat Becky Grossman, running in a crowded field of seven Democrats in two Republicans trying to win their party's primary for the fourth Congressional District race. Grossman has practiced law. She's a Newton City councilor, but says the job she cherishes most is being mom, too, to school age Children. That is a voice that is missing, Grossman says out of 430. Five current members of Congress only 25 are mothers of school age Children. If we had 100 or 200, Mom's in Congress, I think we could make progress on all of the issues that we care about whether it's standing up to the NRA, whether it's taking on big oil and whether it is taking on big pharma and quality, affordable child care. That's the lens through which I see the issues in Newton Sherry Small W busy Boston's news

A Kennedy is on the ballot in Massachusetts. Here's why he's not guaranteed a victory.

"And out front up next we're. Just. From one of the most closely watched primaries this year a young Kennedy on the ballot in Massachusetts but can he unseat a seventy four year old incumbent? Because it's about ideas I am the youngest guy. In. This race. Tonight and the fight for twenty twenty a usual dynamic emerging Massachusetts ahead of tomorrow's Democratic Senate primary. The incumbent in his seventies was support from progressives, his challenger young and Kennedy Manu. Raju is out front. The Hiroshima Political Dynasty the grandson of the leap Robert F Kennedy campaigning to serve in the Senate like his famous great uncles and grandfather before him the. Certainly. I think you're doing great job. Hello. The candidate he's right there. For Life Magazine. Thirty nine year old Joe. Kennedy is facing something unexpected. Seventy four year old senator who has been in Congress for almost forty four years. Has Managed to galvanize support of young voters. Ahead of Tuesday's Massachusetts Senate primary I think that a lot of young people that are our age at least. From from our town have been similarly really inspired by Ed Markey polls show Senator Ed Markey as the favourite threatening to make the four term. The first Kennedy to lose a race in Massachusetts unlike other primaries this year were democratic incumbents have been ousted by liberal newcomers. Marquis has managed to turn that dynamic on its head because it's about ideas. I am the youngest guy. In this race Alexandria, it's been murky seizing the mantle of the insurgent, touting his support of liberal causes at the green new deal and endorsement of the progressive firebrand. Alexandria Cossio Cortes such the green new deal that I introduced Alexandria Cossio. Healthcare justice is on the ballot. That's Medicare for all that I next the Bernie. Sanders. When he introduced it yet, it's been Kennedy with the badging of the party establishment leader Speaker Nancy Pelosi Allies have been frustrated that marquee has not been held to account for full record over four decades like his backing of the Iraq war in two thousand and two the NAFTA deal in one, thousand, nine, hundred, ninety, three, his position on racial issues like school desegregation dating back to the nineteen seventies progressive willing to look those hurdles that's up to a progressive movement. Out. I think an awful lot of folks in many parts of Massachusetts have a different view of that records and what that means to our communities after going door to door in working class Boston neighbors weekend. Kennedy. Accused Marquis of abandoning the state. He's been less time in the state than anybody else delegation in an interview with CNN Marquis fired back there is. No real record of Congressman Kennedy in his eight years leading on issues of of generational change in Washington Kennedy has waited until late in the campaign to stress that it's his family I. Guess It's a fighting. His blood wants to continue in the Senate tried to be really clear that it's GonNa Balance It's not my father, my grandfather brothers or anybody else and. You vote for me you're going to get now Kennedy does pull off an upset on Tuesday night it could be thanks in part to the fact that he is allies have spent more on television advertising than Markey and his allies roughly two million dollars more. But if he loses what Kennedy will do next still an open question we posed that question to him he didn't want to entertain it and said, he looks forward to running through the finish line and celebrating on Tuesday night.

Boston - Sen. Ed Markey, Rep. Joe Kennedy III making final push ahead of Tuesday's Senate primary

"To go to Massachusetts primary election and likely the most hotly contested race is the race for the Senate seat held by Incumbent Senator Ed Markey. Congressman Joe Kennedy campaigning hard to unseat him. Davies's Mike Macklin, caught up with Marquis, campaigning yesterday in Dorchester wouldn't want you to fight with Wei will stand Coalition of African American ministers endorses Senator Ed Markey and Dorchester as Marquis campaigns in the closing days of a hotly contested race for re election. Facing the challenge of Congressman Joe Kennedy were giving it everything we have all the way up until eight o'clock on Tuesday night. I'm all gas, no brakes. The response I'm getting. It's just absolutely overwhelmingly positive. Uh, and our job now is just to make sure that we get out the vote Marquis courting the state's minority communities in a year, when race has surfaced as an overarching issue. The Corona virus did not create the disparities way see now in employment and education and health care and housing. But the pandemic has laid bare that it would be immoral if we did not take bold action now to end these injustices in

"And she was. On progressive change in one of the issues she was running on was climate change. and. A green new deal. So, after she got elected in twenty eighteen. I called her up. and asked if she would have lunch with me. So we had two and a half hour lunch in two thousand, eighteen first week of December right after she was elected and what what we did was we decided that we would partner together intergenerational. And draft the green new deal draft. What was in it because I had done so much work over the years on climate change on energy policy I have been the champion of energy in the House of Representatives before I went over to the Senate. So I thought I would reach out to her in Anay. The power of the green new deal comes from the fact it's a partnership between this young. Brilliant out woman and somebody who's been around a little while in bend the Chairman and I felt if we put it together with got something, then we have kind of the energy that's going to be needed to change discussion on the issue and so when we had the press conference on February six, twenty, nine, nine and we introduced. The green new deal. It changed everything. It electrified a whole new generation of younger people across all nationalities in the united. States. Who now believe it's one of the two or three most important issues in their lives. We also activated Fox News trump who called US socialists and I actually see at the press conference that we have how much Alexandria enjoyed being insulted by Donald Trump because no one knows how to dish it back better than she by and she is. She is. Time she is. She is a force for sure she is tough Erin. So yeah. So so what's happened is we have now changed the whole debate climate change every presidential candidate add to have a climate plan in two thousand sixteen. Neither Donald Trump Hillary Clinton was asked a question about climate change just in two thousand sixteen while at problem is solved into Alexandria you know there's a creation of something called the Sunrise Movement, which has these incredibly SMART active energize, politically savvy young people. In their twenties and teens who are who they're changing politics trump's honored to have her endorsed me in this race for the Senate and I think next year. Next year on the floor of the United States Senate and House representatives. The green deals going to be there everyone in Congress has to with. Their ambitions. To meet the magnitude of the problem and I think that you know Alexandria. been a big big part of it in of an honor to a partner to focus on. Massachusetts. In the Latino community and one of the things, not only climate change which you've addressed. But one of the things that I've noticed the last couple of months and when governor Baker goes out and talks about what's happening with coronavirus is that it seems to be to communities right? You have the affluent suburbs right and you know the suburbs are the ring of Boston and then you have the immigrant communities, you can name you know. What are the four top coronavirus? Cities Communities Right on. You Know Chelsea Everett Lynn I I live next to Randolph which another place Brockton you. You can name them Lawrence what's missing senator in this debate when it comes to coronavirus in and how is it played in the election for you as a senator or can you tell me some of those stories that you've seen when it comes to these immigrant? Communities Massachusetts at are disproportionately suffering from this pandemic. Yeah. Chelsea is a good example. Chelsea is the poorest community in New England it obviously has a very high Latino population and it's a city that has more pollution than just about any other place in that sets the stage for higher levels of asthma, which then because that's a respiratory illness makes people more vulnerable for the grown virus. So we're seeing. The convergence of so many different issue simultaneously. And I agree with you you can say Chelsea you could save Brockton you could say lawrence up you could pick a community and you'll see the very same thing and and In addition, you have a criminally negligent president in the white. House a racist who is in the White House who has been in denial who? Even. During this whole period talks in terms of ice, you know deportations when we should be putting each and every one of the these immigrants on a pathway to citizenship. In our country and the fear of ice than makes people more reluctant to get the testing and the more reluctant they ought to get the testing is the more likely. That will spread in the community. So we wind up with a kind of a circle. Of Danger which is created a in these communities and in in that's why I've been working so hard in introducing. Legislation to say, you can't deport anyone during the condemn Eq. You should be releasing prisoners who are no threat to society if being in prison is going to lead to a higher likelihood of contraction of of Corona virus and I was the first senator in each instance to call for that and from my perspective on proud obviously that gladys who runs the Chelsea collaborative has endorsed me in this race. I know gladdest she's she's like the Fisher Mayor of Chelsea Yeah. She is in cheese like cheese the. Of Chelsea she. I know. She Gladys T is a legend out there. In a proud to have her endorsement in, it's because I have partnered with her. By the way not just. But over the years on issue after issue by issue, sometimes I just feel like I'm the wholly owned subsidiary of Gladys because she is she is such a force of nature in whenever she says, she needs anything I try to deliver for her and so for me Chelsea is the perfect example of what you're talking about and that's why. I don't think we should stop having the Senate in session. Until we have at least a two to three trillion dollar program that's going to send the funding back to the cities that they're going to need in order to make it through the pandemic until we find a vaccine which may not happen as as fast as people. Hope it will. We just don't have any control over that and in the places that need it. The most are the cities that are. Loaded with essential workers. Dan. Rivera. Who is the Mayor of Lawrence? Who is also semi in this race when I called him for months ago to ask him what he needed. He told me that eighty percent of the workers in Lawrence had been a designated as essential workers meaning they couldn't zoom to work. They had a show up to work in, expose themselves to potentially contracting corona virus and bring it home to their families. So the more that I've talked to leaders like gladys in Dan is the more commence I believed that next year on the Senate floor that we have a responsibility to take care of those families the same way. They're taking care of.

"We are in the middle of an election season in the middle of this pandemic and as you know or you might not know. I am based in Massachusetts I've been living in Massachusetts. Since I came to school up here it's kind of been. Home Base for me it's home to me, right so. I've been fascinated by this democratic Senate race that is happening in. Massachusetts in the middle of global pandemic between the incumbent Senator Edward Markey and the Challenger. Robert Senator Joseph Kennedy I've seen this race sort of gained national attention. You know it's one of those races where you. You Go. Why are Democrats running against each other high profile Democrats wearing against each other During the time of you know twenty twenty election and one of the things that has fascinated me about the races. Sort of how Ed Markey who has been congressman for a Lotta years then became senator of Massachusetts, a couple of years ago. How we are at least here, we are seeing more about him because it is a challenge, right you have. A name like Joe Kennedy running against you know the Kennedy name up here. So anyway, I I, it's been a really contentious race and. I've been following it because I because of the whole. Progressive Democrat. Tension I think. WHO's a progressive? Who's not you know? Nancy Pelosi endorsing, EOS endorsing Marquee Nancy. Pelosi. Endorsing Kennedy. It's just kind of a microcosm of the tension of I think within the Democratic Party and also how Ed Markey has. Sort of redefined himself. So anyway, I had an opportunity to connect with Ed Markey a couple of days ago senator. Markey. I also contacted the Kennedy Campaign, a couple of times. They never got back to me. And but Senator Markey did. So we talked. With the disclosure like I said that I I offered time to the Kennedy. Campaign. They never got back to me and in fact. The only time they got back to me is after. We tweeted about the fact that we had just recorded with Senator Markey. So anyway, we might have congressman. Kennedy. Soon. Later this week before the September one primary to offer equal time we might not I don't know if the schedules will workout. But in the meantime, here's a conversation that I had with Senator Ed Markey who is running in. Senate race Senator Ed Markey thank you so much for being on Latino rebels radio. Well, thanks for having me on polio. This is a great honor for me. You know can I just tell you this story before we start I actually met you very briefly at the Kelly's roast beef and you're actually they're ordering Kelly's roast beef in your congressman at the time and I said Hello I just that was just the first time I met you so so so here we are getting your on my show. You're in the middle of a contested race at I never thought that this this primary has become sort of a national story senator and I wanted to talk to you about. I. Think. A community that gets ignored a lot in in Massachusetts is the Latino community. And can you talk to me about your history with the Latino community I in Massachusetts and I don't think a lot of people know this. But I've I've talked to a lot of your supporters who are Latino elected officials who have told me about some of your roots can you just start with that? Yeah. Well, thank you for. The question and I actually eight, some stuff from Kelly's roast beefs afternoon. So you so you you know you you're on to me I love it. I love it. Yeah. Yeah. I I have confirmed that you are a fan of Kelly's. Are Continuing the tradition. So that's funny. Continue Center. So well, thank you. Well, you know I can begin with the work done for. Puerto Rico. In the wake of the of the of the hurricanes earthquakes that continues to ravage the island I worked very hard. To make sure that the trump administration is made accountable I actually flew down to Puerto Rico with Elizabeth Warren to play an oversight role in ensuring that that they knew that destroying paper towels at the citizens of Puerto Rico was not going to be acceptable. So I I did that and then I had multiple summits. With the Puerto Rican community, in Massachusetts, so I could hear their concerns and continued to reflect that in my oversight responsibility has been, and by the way those meetings took place in Boston those meetings took place in Springfield, those meetings took place in holyoke. Those meetings to place in Worcester. So I try to listen to the concerns and in addition I will say that listening to concerns I voted against promise the I know that I can I tell you one thing about that part. So you know I I am a Puerto Rican journalist I I'm I'm in Massachusetts I've been in Massachusetts since the nineties when you said that I think a lot of people miss that point in the debate that you said that because Pro Mesa? Is Not a popular legislation in Puerto. Rico. But also in the Puerto Rican community in Massachusetts and I do want to talk about other communities in Massachusetts outside of the Puerto Rican community but but let's stick on Pro Mesa why did you not vote for promise? You went against your party I mean it was it was a bipartisan legislation President, Obama, signed it. But why did you? Why did you feel that you were against promise of back then and and then talk about how that has changed you know it seems like you're right. I think history has made it very clear that that was the correct boat and by the way. My opponents casts the the opposite vote on that. Issue my feeling was that that we had to absolutely anticipate that it could lead to a hollowing out of educational services, a public safety services services in general who we know now the University of. Puerto Rico is in trouble because of that vote and so I, listened to those who came in and lobbied me on the issue on both sides. And it was there was a divided view on it, but I came to the very clear conclusion that. Big Mistake. To vote for progressives. So I voted no and I think history has worn out especially post. cameras, and the hurricanes that there is an absolute crisis going on in of Puerto Rico. Even as this belt tightening from this something essential control board continues to ham auditory citizens. So I feel very good about that though I think my no vote. has been vindicated historically. So talking about Puerto. Ricans and you you Kinda hang with a famous Puerto Rican now in DC and I want to talk about climate change a little bit because I think that's another topic at least with the Massachusetts Latino community that people don't think that Latinos Massachusetts care about climate change before I talk about what your constituents are saying about the constituents can you tell me your connection with Alexandra Cossio Cortez because you know she is a superstar in the Puerto Rican community. What do you see that you see in you? It seems like you've been reenergize a little bit like. In this campaign because of. Well. She wanted twenty eighteen in a big upset..

"Republican Party, always events the biggest business in any fight it. So they're they're like congenitally incapable of actually backing small businesses. You are. Right. In, the effort to collapse the oil gas coal industry, we're going to have to create tens of thousands of small businesses, insulating homes installing solar win. Bending new technologies. That will be deployable to solve this problem up just to do let's just say just insulate is to. Make, more efficient every public building, every private building in and out of states that's going to be millions of people. It's going to be small businesses all across the country hiring. People to give them the skillset they need to win and have the energy consumption by fifty, seventy, five percent in all of these buildings. So so we it's a little bit like the Internet where. You can just have a cable company telephone company. Or you can just was through net neutrality which the lead sponsor of in the Senate just make sure that tens of thousands of small entrepreneurial chaotic. Economic interests can get online without having to beg for permission from the cable other telephone company so that they create the new ideas well, the same thing is going to be true in the clean energy sector in the energy efficiency sector of we'll have smaller business people who will be elevated doing all of the things we h dramatically in telescope timeframe, reduce the greenhouse gases that are endangering. Thank you senator. Covy nineteen I know you've been asking for more relief. Right now dispensing reports coming out that people in July. Thirty percent of people that had a mortgage in pay their July bill pop, or at least part of it in at thirty, six percent of renters didn't pay their July bill either. What's going to happen here is they're going to be any more relief. It seems like I I know it's not seems we know people falling between the cracks at that. Now there's at least a third of people who are struggling out there. What's going to happen? Well I. WE HAVE THE WE have to extend the unemployment benefit that six hundred bucks a week from the federal government that has to get extended. That's July thirty first such coming up in three weeks. So have to make sure that we got that part for sure. And again, Mitch McConnell is going to be resisting this absolutely, but people need money in there. But. What Bernie Sanders and Kamla Harrison I did was about six weeks ago, we introduced new.

Win The house with many more seats and then we'll have more people to align. With Progressive Agenda I was over at matter pan. You know ion is Congressional district runs from panel to solvable in I was over Amanda Pan was two days ago as we introduced legislation for Free Public Transit so that people can get on and off the train the buses for free we know it will increase ridership for sure but we also know that That That it's it's an impediment. To getting to the doctor or getting to their place of work for someone that only makes thirty thousand dollars a year. A transportation cost a thirty percent of their income so We held up press conference two days ago, introducing legislation and as you know, Alexandra Cossio quotas and I introduced the green new deal in February of last year and it it's great in a revolution. Markey, Harris, Booker to introduce resolution calling for elimination of qualified immunity

"Meantime Massachusetts senator ed Markey is teaming up with fellow senators Cory Booker and Kamala Harris they're introducing a new resolution to end the concept known as qualified immunity a confessional Civil Rights Act of eighteen seventy one allows people to sue public officials including police officers we deprive them of their civil rights but the senator says the Supreme Court has granted police officers qualified immunity which sets standards for a lawsuit that would be so high that it would almost never succeed objective was to be able to find a prior case in which the courts have already gained the challenge use of course to be illegal but the case must also be in the same jurisdiction with the same facts the same context in the same conduct even the smallest distinctions between the cases result in a dismissal of the case on grounds of qualified immunity marquis went on to say that Congress has to act because the Supreme Court so far has refused to change their interpretation on this said hold that the Supreme Court would recognize the problems it created and take out any one of the more than a dozen qualified immunity appeals pending before but on Monday Monday of this week the High Court again hundreds he used to bring up those cases Suffolk County DA Rachel Rollins joining marquee for the presser today saying this concept has led to a rogue police officers believing they can kill with

How B.C.'s Indigenous communities are facing climate change, and creating solutions

"The signs of climate change are everywhere. Lighter snowpacks others rising water levels and the conversations around climate are shifting just two years ago the phrase. The green new deal was just a bullet point in political platform since then it's expanded into a worldwide phenomenon and a solution. Some feel will slow down. The human caused portion of climate change. Jillian brave noise cat is been there. Every step of the way he worked with elected officials to help draft the green new deal resolution. Julian is a member of the Canam Lake Ban to cast skin in British Columbia. Hi Julian welcome back to the show. Thanks so much for having me so first of all. What is the green new deal so the green new deal began as a resolution introduced by representative Alexandria costs? He'll Cortez of New York and Senator Ed Markey of Massachusetts. It's a resolution with big ambitions to take on the dual crises of inequality and climate change but the discourse here because America's media market political scene often spills over into Canada and Europe and elsewhere has also been picked up by sort of more left leaning forces in other countries so the New Democratic Party. The Social Democratic Party in in Canada picked up the green new deal as part of their platform and has been talking about it in the Canadian context as well and use climate activists who are also sort of affiliated with the left wing and Canada have also been talking about potentially a a green new deal for Canada. What the green new deal is in. That is big jobs infrastructure investment. Sort of package so your listeners might be familiar with sort of carbon price and tax approach. That has been led by the liberal government in Canada and the distinction between that approach and the green new deal is that rather than sort of forcing consumers and businesses to have a off where they have to pay higher prices for gasoline. And things like that to sort of benefit the environment and to lower emissions. The green new deal says that we should invest in decarbonising a whole set of industries and sectors in a way that will create jobs and promote a more fair and equitable economy. Why is this important for indigenous people in Canada so I think that first nations and indigenous people in both the United States and Canada have played an outsized role in the fight for environmental justice over the last ten twenty years? Maybe even further back. If you look at the history of resistance to pipelines and Forestry and mining you know first nations have often been some of the loudest voices you know. Putting their very bodies on the line in front of pipelines and projects. That are going to damage the environment and public health. So I I would say that. A lot of the grassroots energy of the green new deal comes from first nations for example representative Alexandria. Cossio Cortez the politician who led the charge for green new deal here in the United States actually got started as a volunteer organizer. Supporting the move. Minute Standing Rock So I would say that. The indigenous movement both in the United States and Canada really has played a significant underlying role. That people haven't fully appreciated in producing the green new deal. I think the questions that first nations sovereignty and rights raise for the green new deal or not just the fact that communities are disproportionately harmed and polluted by the fossil fuel industry in particular and other extractive industries more generally but also you know what it might look like to in both the federal systems of Canada and the United States to incorporate first nations governments as equal partners in the federal system. That is that is pushing for action on climate change. What would it look like for first nations governments in in Canada and the United States to lead a transition to clean energy to create a lot of the jobs in their communities to be empowered as environmental stewards in protectors? And I think the examples that we should be looking to are things. Like the Guardian Watchmen program in the great bear rainforest. Other parts of Canada where first nations twenty thirty years ago stood up against logging and forestry and now today employ some of their own members as environmental stewards and protectors making sure that some of the most important carbon sinks in North America remain protected and can help us in the fight against climate change. So I think it's those kinds of things that we should be thinking about and then abroad or sort of intellectual and philosophical sense. I think that climate change really is an existential threat for humans and human societies around the world and of course you know first nations you know what it means to live. Through an apocalypse we lived through the apocalypse of of colonization. We lived through the apocalypse of our children being taken away to residential schools Canada and boarding schools in the United States and in a broader sense of human sort of confronting this enormous tragic upheaval to our societies. I think that you know indigenous people in Canada and and more generally actually have perspectives and experiences to lend to those set of
