Erich Pratt and Doug Unpack the Latest Gun Legislation

"They're trying to stop me from selling my neighbor a gun. Or in that's exactly what they're doing. And to do so, what the gun control groups won't tell you is the only way and it was all Gabby Giffords group and some others, you know, website basically saying, the only way to actually enforce that is to have registration. The only way to enforce to know that if I'm selling a gun or it shows up later is to have a registration of that transaction. Here's what they did. And Eric, this is just beyond understanding in the Senate. How this actually got through. They took it from where it was basically if you did it for a livelihood or gain profit, the two prongs here, and they took out basically livelihood. They took out the base for what we'll call the financial game party and only said if you have a profit and even basically they gutted it too, tell people how this really is going to affect because I'm not sure even to this day John cornyn and some of the others actually looked at this bill. This was the best slide of hand by the Democrats on gun control in 50 years. No, you're absolutely right. It was really disgusting what happened. Basically, the only way that you could get around this provision that we're talking about is for you to give away your firearms, which you might do as a dad or a grandfather and passing them out to your children and grandchildren as an inheritance. But otherwise, you're absolutely right. If you make a profit on your gun, then they'll come to you and say, well, did you have an FFL? And if not, you're in big trouble. You know, senator Chris Murphy, who was, of course, one of the guys on the left who was spearheading this and was working this with senator cornyn Republican of Texas. As the bill was being passed, he went on MSNBC and he said, that this provision alone, the one that we're talking about is going to cause thousands of more gun sales in the country to go through the background check system. And that's ultimately what the dream of the anti gun left is is to register every gun sale, every gun in America, ATF, has already admitted that they have almost 900 million records that are digitized. They have almost a billion records and 900 million are digitized. So pushing for more gun sales to have a 44 73 form gives the ATF a record of almost every gun sale and provides them the list that let's face it. That can become a future gun confiscation list.

Yeah, Julie at the opening of the bricks, she says sanctions are weaponizing the world economy and separating nations Bloomberg's Ian marlowe says without specifically mentioning the U.S.. I think he's trying to do several things with these comments. I mean, obviously it's sort of just a hit at the U.S. in general and there are coordinated western sanctions against Russia. But there are also sort of backing up the Russian messaging about the global food and energy crisis at the moment kind of suggesting that this isn't a result of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, but is in fact a result of the coordinated sanctions. From the west against Russia that have snarled supply chains and mixed up and caused a global energy prices to spike. Now she says making a very hard on emerging nations. Meanwhile, president Putin says trade with India and China has strengthened the western oil sanctions. He says the growth is noticeable. U.S. president Joe Biden has asked Congress for a 90 day holiday from federal gas taxes and is calling on oil companies to follow the falling price of oil. In the last two weeks, the price of oil is fallen by more than $10 a barrel. Normally, this reduced the cost of the pump about 25 cents a gallon. Yet, so far, gas stations have only reduced prices by a few cents a gallon. But he says he wants to go on with a holiday the tax holiday says infrastructure can still get done. What's in the Bipartisan Gun Legislation Agreement?

"Of stuff from senator cornyn's office on the bill. It reads, quote, this is a targeted bit of a legislation addressing specific problems that have led to recent mass shooting. Get that, they're specifically addressing evolving. And there was news on baldy, which I'll come to in a second. Unless you are adjudicated mentally ill or a convicted violent criminal, your Second Amendment rights are not affected by this bill. So don't get upset. If you are a gun proponent, a gun owner, it's not going to impact you. In your law abiding. The proposal ensures schools are safe, kids are protected without placing new restrictions on law abiding gun owner. Big new investment mental healthcare, including in rural areas, more resources for school safety and school hardening helps keep gun out of the hands of those who aren't supposed to have them. Federal funding to implement programs help those suffering from mental illness, like veterans courts homelessness courts assisted outpatient treatment, increases the mental health and suicide prevention programs crisis and trauma intervention. That's all good. Invests in telehealth, mental health services in schools, including early identification and intervention. Intervention made the key to me. They've known they have known from the beginning, who the disturbed children are, and when they turn 18, they ought not to be able to run out and get a gun. And so, there are additional times for waiting if you're between 18 and 20. And if there's a reason for concern, it's a ten day waiting period, and that's good.

The chief Republican negotiator, senator John cornyn of Texas, spoke about the bill's requirement for juvenile criminal records to be included in background checks. 87% of gun owning households in America support making juvenile records available in the background check system in this legislation will make that possible. Senator cornyn also says the plan gives federal dollars into helping states implement so called red flag laws. President Biden is about to announce a federal gas tax holiday. The president wants to suspend the federal gas tax, which is 18 cents for a gallon of regular for three months. The White House says this is designed to do everything possible to reduce costs for families, especially as the busy holiday travel season begins. Britain's deputy prime minister says the government should not give in to the demands of the tens of thousands of rail workers striking this week. Dominic rob knows times are tough with inflation over 9%. However, we do need to have the kind of pay restraint in the public sector that we've been talking about and which at the heart of the challenge with unions otherwise will just have the vicious cycle of inflation staying higher for longer. "But now the mailroom that was right up my alley. And I worked for a guy named Grady who loved talk radio in the local talk radio station. And so I fell in love with talk radio listening to folks like Brad clay and bob queso and all these great great colorful provocative talk show hosts. This is way before talk radio exploded the way it has around the country. And I decided to try to take a tour of the radio station to see what it looked like. And I got in my beat up pale blue Volkswagen bug and drove over to Cincinnati's street over in Dayton near the university of Dayton arena. And got a tour of the radio station and I saw a memo on the bulletin board that said, we're still looking for that young talk master. That was what they called talk show host back in those rather pretentious times. And I thought, well, I can do that. I could talk. So I knocked on the program director's door and I said, I can do it. I can go on. Give me a shot. And he said, well, kid, the guy who's on the air tonight has the flu, I'm supposed to cover for him, but I don't really want you. Why don't you go on and go on air? Now I think 17 and a half years old, scared to death. And I started ranting and raving. I didn't just say I was pro life. I said, their baby killers. Fry them. I'm pro capital punishment. Fry the bait. I mean, I didn't know what I was doing. I'm yelling and ranting and raving. And they hired me. The next day, they said, you got a job. And I became a talk show host in 1978. "And it's nice to have a chance to show off the ability to bring a conference together. I think senator cornyn likes that, but John thune can do that too. And he can become part of the package as well. It's just very interesting to me that that was what was on. That's underreported because of course the substance of the issue is much more important than the politics of the issue. But there is that backdrop, right? Yes, for sure. Absolutely. And I have to listen as soon as I'm for reelection, he will win handily, but I'm curious if that if that please into his calculus on whether he's going to vote for this.

Virginia and Maryland all have those laws But perhaps the federal assistance to help other states adopt red flag laws So what's a red flag law It allows a judge to order the seizure of guns from people deemed or ordered to be a danger So it would be a complaint filed by a police officer by a family member and the court adjudicates it and then takes the gunner orders the gun D.C.'s As a small bore change but a change that perhaps has the best pathway to 60 votes All right and in the last 30 seconds let's talk about timing Is this something that's going to happen quickly Needs to happen quickly according to senator Murphy and the gun control activists They say they need to use this moment to meet the moment and get something done if it atrophies if it waits It could slide into the off ramp which is where these bills go and expire All right CBS News congressional correspondent Scott mcfarlane where looking ahead at the week ahead at a glimmer of hope for supporters of gun control legislation Coming up on WTO students and fairfax county honor soldiers on this Memorial Day This is Kyle Cooper 7 13 If you don't know PPC if you don't know SEO If you don't know OTT if you don't know targeted display social media management website development Email marketing You don't have to All you need to know is 2060 digital we can help you with the digital marketing your business needs but maybe doesn't understand or have time to execute 2060 digital is a Google premier partner That may not mean a lot to you but when you consider that only 3% of digital advertising agencies carry that designation it should If you're in.

MJ Hegar wants to bring Texas values to the Senate

"MJ Hagar Welcome. Hi. Jonathan. Thanks for having me on. So okay. I I had a set first question, but I'm going to ask my own separate question and that is we started out the clip intro this moment. With your doors add. You ran when you ran the last time to me was one of the most powerful political ads had seen perhaps ever was it important for you to tell your story in that way? You know I think part of why it was. So powerful was the moment that it played in. In that moment people were. Being exposed to the horrors of family separation, for example. And the fact that it resonated so much with people almost. Sad. I want it to be successful, but it was also kind of disheartening to hear so many people reach out to the campaign and say, yes, that was me I had doors closed in my face to I've been trying to advocate for. Disability rights because my child has down syndrome or whatever it was that they were trying to be heard by other elected officials and they completely You know empathize with that that experience of going to DC and having your elected officials closed door in your face and treat you like if you're not a big donor or you don't have any political capital to barter with and you don't matter. And so it was kind of a bittersweet thing. It was great that it got the campaign so much attention but it broke my heart a little that people were. So gut punched over family separation and and so used to their government just not working for them that the message really resonated with people. And so you you lost that. That that ad was made for and now you're running for for US Senate most polls I've seen have you around by points within five points of Senator Cornyn the Cook Political Report classifies your race as likely are which I expected to be solid are given whose Senator Cornyn is from your perspective how is the race looking? Well you know I mean if you I love you know just talking about like the INS and outs of the data although I do think the data shows. That, we have a much better shot than Beto did against Ted Cruz a lot of people think that beddoe crews race that if anybody you know. If we couldn't beat Ted Cruz and we can't beat anybody in Texas. It's actually not true independent voters really like Ted Cruz Ted Cruz had a fifty two percent approval rating when he wants went up against Beto. and. Better almost beaten and John Cornyn has an approval rating of anywhere from twenty eight to thirty two and the vote exactly the same way, and so you have to try to figure out what the differences between the white has one why once a while popular in Texas and one's not And, the reason that that John Cornyn is not so popular is because he there's not an independent bone in his body. He just does he's told he does as he's told by his corporate special interests he does he's told by his party leaders and. You know that's very Texan. It's very Texan to have backbone and grit and integrity and stand up for your principles and so You know I don't really look at polling that much. Even fivethirtyeight recently said that Democrats in Texas are always going out will recently at least maybe not always are outperforming the polling in part because you poll people with a reliable voting history and we've been forty nine hundred fiftieth in voter turnout for decades. So who's reliable voter anymore when when you have double or triple the turnout at the polls, a lot of the people showing up to vote which by the way the people who are getting. Engaged to go and vote who haven't been reliable voters tend to be not good news for whatever political party is in power right? So we expect to outperform the Coles the polling we're we're a lot closer than Beto was in the polling against Ted Cruz and yet he's still almost beat him. So I, have every confidence that. After the debate we only have one scheduled that Cornyn. has agreed to he has kind of chickened out on the other to even though he told the Texas Tribune that he would be. Willing to do more. I think that he knows that he can't run on his record I. think he knows that the more Texans learn about him the worse it is for him we pick up a lot more of those independent undecided voters because my vision for this state is a lot more in line with Texas values in. Want.

"On healthcare altogether. Senator Cornyn has authored Strong legal liability protections so that nurses doctors charge his school districts, colleges and employers and spend the next months actually reopening rather than fighting for their lives against frivolous lawsuits will preserve accountability in the event of roast or intentional misconduct. But we're not going to let trial lawyers throw a party on the back from the front line workers and institutions who bought who thought this news? The enemy on the front line Health, economic assistance, Liability and schools another historic package for the next wave of this historic national fight to make a law. Bipartisan talks need to come next. So there's one big question in the country right now, which version Of our distinguished Democratic college are the American people about to get going to get the Democratic Party We got in March when our colleagues to medicine, good faith negotiations and work with us to turn on framework into a bipartisan product. The Democrats who helped us past the largest rescue package in American history. Without one dissenting vote, all the country got the Democratic Party we saw in June when our college refused to suggest amendments are improvements to Senator attempt Scott's police reform bill and shows the block issue altogether. Their actions last month left some observers wondering whether Democrats had made this cynical charge. To give up on bipartisan legislation altogether right through November whether Democrats had determined that strengthening our nation with bipartisan action might hurt their political odds and therefore might suit their fortunes better if pain and chaos simply continued. I hope that's completely off president. I know our Democratic colleagues know this crisis is still urgent. I know they know American families need more help, So I hope the strong proposal will occasion a riel response. Not partisanship shots, not the predictable card. Old rhetoric. Those that know these were ordinary times and the nation could afford ordinary politics..

"Made it something that we hear frequently, quite frankly, from a lot of conservative and a lot. Ah, White Americans and even a lot of men what we're talking about. Discrimination very off them Individuals who find themselves on the receiving and accusations by view it as the individualistic attack. They view it as something connecting directly to their character or their values or their ethic. And what Oops that was trying to explain Is that by especially implicit by very subconscious, and it's developed by so many different back there, they're all of us. Tougher front and on some level and the focus should not be on whether or not um we we suffer from it that the data support that that's the case. Her work and the work of many other lawmakers on that panel. It's trying to get around it and trying to not allow state policy and the politics. That affect so many Americans, because that's what the real focus should be. Not on whether or not an individual, it's rated attention needs to be on whether policy he had Different implications on people of color versus white people, and that is what she was trying to explain. But I think with Senator Cornyn was getting to it that For many Americans, the idea that they could be motivated by racial preference so.

"Senator Cornyn is angry we'll tell you why bottom of the hour on Katie so four years whatever you mention Cuomo I see the late Mario Cuomo in my head so I had someone call and and they they they corrected me on my corpsman family tree which is easy to get it's almost as confusing sometimes is the Kennedy family tree and who's where who's in government who isn't that isn't it so Mario Cuomo his sons Andrew and Chris and I was talking about Andrew Cuomo who is coming off as of late more eloquent then I would then I would believe and so I would use him as an example with his level of calmness and I also think I also think president trump has been extremely focused and calm with this I think the biggest disservice to the president but more importantly to the people of the United States is when and I don't know if you saw the exchange but you can also set the stage it's real easy to remember the president was talking and he gave about four to five minutes of information on some alternate treatments or vaccines in a variety of other things related to and currently treating malaria and sars and he's being very positive and on more than one occasion he said you know I I really don't know but I'm going to stay positive I you know I feel good about it and doctor fallacy came up and said well you know we haven't done this test yet but we are going to it's sector so he's very positive very positive so after that explanation somebody from N. B. C. Mr president or don't you think you're scaring people something along those lines I'm I'm paraphrasing and I predicted last week I predict that on my show I said they're gonna edit that up over the weekend and you're gonna see headlines where you know trump doing blah blah can answer simple questions the usual stuff they're gonna take five minutes of dialogue of of a of a leader whose assemble the team and he was making every effort to honestly answer questions and they're going to cut it up so it sounds like this guy rolled in and ask one simple question and trump couldn't answer which is totally incorrect but the thing that I want to point out to you the next time you see if you have a chance looking over the shoulder of some of these media people that are at a press conference in the in the press room at the White House see if they already have notes verses are they taking notes something that I was watching in the last not this past one but the one before the big coronavirus press conference where I sometimes the president he's he's looking kind of tired you know but I think he's he's maintained his focus I can't imagine the you know the balls he's got in the air right now with this crisis but I was watching the last one and I said to my wife I said look at these people are journalists there not even taking notes they showed up with a list of things the new information is being offloaded to the American people you've got all this information all these experts every now and then in intelligent question even comes out of the press pool and there's this reporter in particular but there's others they're not taking notes they have a list of things they want to I don't know if there gotcha questions or whatever but that's something I found very interesting so I think the press blew its chance they blew the chance to step up and really report what we need to not what we need to hear necessarily nobody saying that whenever you at when when you mention this whole concept of can you focus on all the good things that are happening people immediately think at the press get self righteous so you just want me to kind of go the news well why not you candy coated a bomb in his M. for eight years you candy coat anybody alike thank you not even investigating major things that are happening in the world outside of corona virus because this is too this is just too good of an opportunity to say look look at trump look at what he's doing see that I want to go back to the National Guard thing because this has a lot of people concerned and I've seen it online so we have over five thousand throughout the nation and when you break that down of the thirty two states in various counties and what have you but actually National Guard members work and live in every community across the nation you are one possibly you know one you have one in your family they've been overseas they've been back here they have a proven track record of success supporting civilian authorities after we have homeland emergencies this is after Katrina after floods except for now the hills reporting that when asked if the White House could federalize the guard this is when trump he said and I quote he said at this point it would not make sense so what do you what do you think I think the guard is best in a state capacity with the law the commander of the National Guard being the governors and the reason I think that is if you look at the current corona virus map which shall bring up in the next break or two and I'll give you a link to it you'll see that some states are faring very well not all states are in the position that New York is in or other areas of the country there are states with limited cases zero death and things are on track with the plan in California governor new some he wants to talk more coming up your Houston's news weather or traffic.
