Ah lies are last minute mailings that's the word mailings in. Is there any way to prevent this. It's very difficult particularly if if you don't have the money which you can respond in that medium and that is all the more difficult and a state date as big as ours. This is not the first time live that laws have been used in American politics. This is as old as the country is indeed as old As the history of civilization wherever there was an attempt to have some kind of election by the way another contributing contributing factor to one of the polarization is when Hamilton and Jefferson. Were going one with each other. Communication was slow and it was the cooling saucer a principal. The hot coffee. That was going to burn. You had a chance to cool off. Communication is instant today and now communication is not only by the airways in telephone and so forth. It's a it's a very impersonal communication by email by text by facebook. This person has ass us if you do have an interest in running for office and I'm GonNa Paraphrase this to some extent do those opportunities it just all of a sudden present themselves or is there something you can do to go out and try to make it happen it could happen either way But what my recommendation to you would be is prepare yourself first of all examine yourself. Are you in it for the right reason season and then if you got your mindset on a particular thing prepare yourself and really bone up on the the issues and whatever it is tried to articulate. What you're feeling is about those issues and go out out and start talking to people that was what was so wonderful about going door to door? You learn a lot about life when when you force yourself to do things in life that ordinarily you would not do and normally you would not go and knock on twenty thousand doors. Oh worse in life but each of those doors you learn something about humanity just the way. They presented themselves whether or not. It looked like they were having a rough life. The smells that came out of the open door and then something you really learned about was dogs. We all have some door to door stories about that. Yes I have of. What would be a really good last question Dennis but do you have a question before you would like for me to do that? This person has asked opponent question and that is with things as polarized as they are. How can we come back together again? I don't know the answer to that. I know that ultimately the answer is you're GonNa have to elect folks like Dennis That can do a deal and that is respectful to the other person and right now this toxic the environment is such that the two sides don't WanNa talk to each other senator. You're I son of Florida and you have always serve for the right reasons. It's been a pleasure for me to be a part of this thank you. Before he was elected to represent New Mexico in the Senate, Jack Schmitt was the last human to walk on the moon, and Jack swagger is responsible for one of the most famous lines in NASA history. "At this hour in Florida the election there nearly two weeks later is finally finally drawing to close counties finish their recounts and had to submit final vote tallies by noon, Andrew gillum, the democratic candidate for governor conceded last night to his GOP opponent and democratic Senator Bill Nelson's chances of staying in the Senate have become almost no he did not appear to overcome the twelve thousand votes separate him from his Republican opponent. Rick Scott joining us now is Mitchell burger special counsel for the Florida Democratic Party. He represented former Vice President Al gore in lawsuits following the two thousand elections. Welcome to the program. Well, thank you, Mr. burger, you seem to be a glutton for punishment. Now. A second recount eighteen years later may I ask you a Senator Nelson ready to concede. I am not intimate to what's turn opens plans are in that regard your lead. In was correct. The recount right now has not shown that the under votes for the people who fail to vote in the United States Senate have helped him to overcome the margin that he needed to achieve. It's fair to say, I guess that. It doesn't look good for Senator Bill Nelson. These recounts seem to have changed little, but there have been dozens of lawsuits the election was also marked by a lack of favorable court rulings for the democratic side, and the judge Judge Mark Walker did say that the state has a quote important interest in delineating finality in elections. Meaning, you know, these elections have to end at some point. It's been a bruising saga juicy his point. Oh, I think there is a point to having finality in elections. But the undercover story is there was a recount going on and the sector cultures race in which the Democrats cheap success and in the state court rulings. There were many successful rulings in the secretary of agriculture race. So certainly understand George Walker's point, and certainly understand that what the national story has been the. In the second most important race in statewide race in Florida. The Democrats won the sector vac culture as that post in a recount that post regulates guns and water in our state, and those are the two biggest issues prior to the election of current. I have to get your reaction to something GOP candidate. Rick Scott made accusations of fraud along with Senator Marco Rubio. And the president added to that do you think Floridians are going to have confidence in their elections going forward? Well, again, the judge in the judge not just judge Walker, but every judgeship faced the these litigations many of which were brought by governor Scott. Said there was no fraud in this election. It is it is part of the unfortunate card Republican Trump narratives, and I don't wish to be personal about this. But to tear down our systems, there was no fraud of this election. There were specific findings that there were no no fraud in this election, and that was covered widely for a couple of days during the last week. And I think that is probably the most important court findings that were Kurt. There was no fraud in the election. That's Mitchell burger special counsel for the Florida Democratic Party. Thank you very much. Thank you for.
Hand recount won't likely save Bill Nelson vs. Rick Scott
"Now have President Trump on their side ABC's. Victor oquendo is in Broward County today in Broward County. Route Chester swarming election headquarters as they have for gays. Each side accusing the other of election theft Laura's machine recount is underway. State law mandating a recount when races are within half a percentage point the race for governor meeting that threshold the Senate race, even tighter governor, Rick Scott leading by just twelve thousand five hundred votes. Meanwhile, the rhetoric between Scott and his opponent Bill Nelson heating up sitter Nelson is clearly trying defy to try to commit fraud to try to win this election. President Trump wing in tweeting drawing to steal two big elections in Florida. We are watching closely while Scott and the president had provided no evidence of fraud. Democrats are expressing their own concerns about Scott as the current governor being in the position to certify his own election. I am calling on governor Scott to recuse himself immediately from any actions involving the Florida election Scott has a blatant conflict of interest in the governor's race democrat, Andrew gillum rescinding his election night concession. "Problems in floor. Of course, they can't get it done in China. Can't get anything done in time down in Florida. There's a lot of breaking news there. We'll get to throughout the course of the program. The the avenue naughty arrest and being charged. There is a big issue that needs to be dealt with. I'm going to explain all of that in the course of the show today. We got a lot of chaos in the Democratic Party Republicans are actually showing some leadership in strength with. I guess now the new minority leader to be and that would be Kevin McCarthy will get to that way. Do you hear Kamala Harris conflict? It's going to blow your mind. She's basically asking you know, the perception that ice is the equivalent of the KKK that exchanges coming in. The course of the show as well. We'll get to all of it. Let me just give you an update on Florida because it matters to every American here. You know, we we we've got to get these elections. Right. And if one more election season is ever allowed to go by in Florida and allow Broward and Palm Beach to do what they're doing. We will never ever going to get an accurate number already as it is. You know, we it is it is mind numbing. And then, of course, you got activist. Judges justices apparently one decision made by one judge the white for that judges. A Nelson donor over the years. I mean, there's so much out there. But you know, here we go again another judges stepped in the middle of this Florida fiasco with. Ruling that could impact Rick Scott and the recount Tallahassee federal judge is given voters now until Saturday to fix ballots that were tossed due to conflicting signatures, extending that extending the deadline now for counties to turn in the final election results, including machine results. Now, the judge said that state law lacks a concrete process for voters to challenge county canvassing boards that decided to reject provisional or vote by mail ballots due to signature mismatch. No doubt. It's ever gonna come near the twelve thousand five hundred sixty two vote deficit the Bill Nelson has, but this is what Marco Rubio was saying. It's like all right. So you're down twenty four twenty two, you know, five seconds remaining you kick the field gold. And now after the fact the lawyers for the losing team commend in one. Arguing change the rules. That's only worth one point nine three. And this there is no at the end of this. Let me tell you what it means wind by any means. Necessary when the lawyers for gillum and Nelson went in there and said, and they said, well that person is an illegal immigrant objection. They wanna count that vote. We now have a report out in politico today. Most experts say no matter how many times they recount the votes. Andrew gillum doesn't have a prayer of ever catching Ron Santa's. But that you know, does head right to plan B, and in this case political reporting gillen's hope rides on a series of unlikely events tied to his fellow democratic Senator Bill Nelson filed up a host of lawsuits to broaden the pool of countable ballots by overturning or changing Florida election laws enrolls after the game is played that does these lawmakers. They don't care about truth. And you wanna talk about sore losers all the talk in two thousand sixteen. Donald Trump loses is gonna is going to contest, the the honesty and integrity of our electoral process. Well, now, it's the Democrats doing it on a spectacular scale also happening in the state of Georgia as well an governor's race. But you know, if if Bo I guess enough votes surface Gillam could still contest the election. Filing, a lawsuit within ten days after the election being officially certified that's supposed to happen November thirtieth. So we'll see what happens by January, basically is the end here. But I gotta hope by this time Republicans know what they're up against when you go from fifty seven thousand volt lead down downward twelve thousand five hundred volt lead you better pick it up. Then. And you just heard from the Palm Beach from Palm Beach county saying they will probably miss the deadline as the judge gives voters time to fix ballots would signature issues. That's it's unbelievable is one report that we got that. Fox News is reporting than it has learned the Caron Walker the wife of Judge Mark Walker who ruled the Nelson's favor this morning as previously donated money to Bill Nelson's campaigns, which would raise questions about whether or not he should have recused himself notice. It's only Republicans that recused himself. You know in the case of okay Jeff Sessions. He had no reason recused himself. The reason he gave the time was that. While I campaign with Donald Trump doesn't mean he can't be a fair, objective, discerning, attorney general and that rod Rosenstein, he was way conflicted in this because he was the one that wrote the letter about James Comey and recommended the firing and then he signed the fourth and final Biza warrant and at that. That point what else? You can't be more involved. He's almost like well witness a in on both sides of this. So now, they're gonna give voters more time. We don't have an exact number that they are putting out there in terms of how many people, it's unknown. How many discarded ballots are at stake? But it's at least three thousand six hundred eighty eight according to election officials lawyers for Nelson filing a motion with the secretary of state to produce the names of all the peoples mail in provisional ballots thrown out. So I guess we'll find out by one o'clock today that same judge. We'll be hearing that and in a thirty four page ruling that relies on a lot of football metaphors. Walker said the secretary of state most order supervisors of elections that the state scheme as it applies to curing mismatch signatures unconstitutional. Consider the game of football football fans may quibble about the substance of the rules. But no one quibbles that the rules are necessary to play the. Game. And it goes on from there. So we'll find out doesn't look like there's going to be enough votes. But I at this point who can predict anything that won't be done to to grab this election. If you will. You know, also Florida Democrats plan to use altered forms to fix mail ballots across the state deadline. Now, we're finding that little fact out bins filled with ballots are stacked at the Broward County supervisor of elections office as employees is now counting ballots during this recount going on there, but a day after Florida's election that was the Wednesday after the Tuesday top state races too close to call Democratic Party leaders directed staffers and volunteers to share altered election forms with voters to fix signature problems on T ballots after the state deadline. That's another law that they broke broken here. How many laws are broken before anyone ever gets held accountable. I guess it's just like Hillary Clinton Hillary Clinton gets away with anything and everything every single time. So we're going to watch all of this patiently as this unfolds. Let me go to the issue and we'll get calls. I'm gonna take a lot of calls in of course of the program today. So Michael avenue has been arrested for felony domestic violence. He came out last night. And I think we have the tape and strongly defended himself that he's never done any such thing. Here's what he said. I have never struck a woman, I never will strike a woman.
Florida counties working to meet recount deadline
"Three o'clock as mandated by law. Every county is supposed to complete a recount in very close races, including for Senator and governor last minute lawsuits and a plea from democratic Senator Bill Nelson have not changed that nor has news that at least one big Florida county is unlikely to make the deadline NPR political correspondent asthma holidays in that county Palm Beach county. Hey there. Hey, good morning. So I'm just looking at a map here Palm Beach county, right? Next to Broward County at south Florida. It's outside of Miami, beautiful beaches and so forth, but what's going wrong? Well, so far at this point. They just have not been able to it looks like meet the deadline, and it would really be a miracle at this point if they're able to do this and part of this is that they have these machines that are older. And so they can only recount individually one race at a time. So they got gotta run the governor's the Senate race. I then they're gonna run the governor's race. So Susan Booker who's the election supervisor has really said that she's in prayer mode that they'll actually finish this. I have to say that I'm working as hard as I can get any more. You know, why this is our democracy? And I'm here to count every vote, and I will take the time that's required. And you can see I haven't been home for three days. Steve the thing is there is this looming deadline, but for hours yesterday, there was just one machine running, and that's because on top of the fact that they have these older machines. They've also had tech difficulties with these machines they overheated on Tuesday. And that meant that they had to recount a hundred and seventy five thousand early ballots that they had all ready recounted in a nutshell, though, if they're not able to meet that deadline, according to Florida law, the provisional results that they've already submitted to the state, those are the ones that are gonna stand. Okay. So that may be what we end up with in Palm Beach county, and we'll see other counties are turning in their recounted results. There's this three pm deadline. What happens after that? Well, if a race comes down to being within a quarter of a percent, then there will be a manual recount. And in the governor's race. This is likely not going to be the what's hit. Right. So the governor's race we're likely to see some results after today that are more official. But in the Senate race, Republican Rick Scott leads Democrat Bill Nelson by about twelve thousand five hundred votes, which translates to point one five percent. So in a race like that we're going to have a manual recount most likely I will not be all of the ballots. It's just going to be those people who had either chosen multiple candidates who had not chosen a candidate. At all the official returns are then do by noon on Sunday. And I do want to say one quick thing though about eight last minute. Judge's ruling that we saw this morning. She ruled in favor of a challenge by Bill Nelson to give voters until Saturday to correct any issues with mismatched signature this decision is going to affect only Floridians who cast their ballots by mail or voted provisionally. So it's a limited four thousand plus people as a pretty narrow decision. But that's where things stand that is the timeline assuming they are no more rulings from the judge today. Okay. Could further delay the deadline, asthma, very briefly. What are you hearing from Floridians about all of this? Yes, I have been in and really Steve locals. Tell me that they are embarrassed and frustrated one Republican woman told me that they feel like they look like fools to the rest of the country that people don't seem to understand really why this is happening. They feel like it makes their county look suspicious, and what I will say Steve is this frustration feels fairly bipartisan and a big part of this problem. You know, people are saying is the technology. These outdated machines, the county Palm Beach county is planning on getting more modern machines by twenty twenty. But overall people wanna feel like this is gonna work NPR's s Muhammad in Palm Beach county, Florida aspe-, thanks.

"Recounts continue. In florida. And there's a difference between the recounts and the thefts. Attempted to the election. I don't mind saying that I think it seems pretty obvious. To so many people. That there have been things done. That are simply indecent. In this race. People like Senator Bill Nelson. And the Democratic Party saying that votes from people they know are in the country illegally was legal. They should be counted. There was that push. Then there was the recognition that Brenda Snipes who runs the election center there Broward County. She has a history of corruption. Yes, I understand that she was put into position by then governor, Jeb Bush, I am fully aware of this. But what I'm also aware of is that there are a fair amount of people who have not told the truth about who Brenda Snipes is. And we should also point. The brand new sites in Broward County is a Republican appointed by former governor then governor Jeb Bush. She's not a Republican. And we're talking about incompetence here. Right. And now they put them in Broward County for a recount, this is no way to treat. You, sir. Tony. How are you doing man? I'm good. What is truly yet? Again, eighteen years later, a hot mess in Broward County, Florida. So let's get to the first the differential. There's a difference between the recounts which is mandated by the state, and then the conversations of whether or not there's some shenanigans with the election. These are two different subjects, right? Yeah. That's a great point to sort of clarify for your list as I mean, listen, the Broward County supervisor of elections here dot com. Come under a lot of attack accusations and lawsuits from governor Rick Scott because of her failure to comply with Florida governor, Jeb Bush puts nights position three by the way, because her predecessor had been proven to have broken Florida law as well in an election is now calling tweeting today that he wants her with with the recount is over because there's no question in which is fine bet nice has failed to comply holy with Florida's election law situation. But the recount is underway right now, if you hours ago, they actually started to we count tabulate the early they separated all those Cody and free fouls early votes votes. He's still got a decent sorting and separation because they're only picking one entire eight or nine page valid because that only has the cynic governor agriculture Commissioner race if they need are there to run these recounts. So at least a third of the ballots about two hundred thousand are running right now is that recount separated over under verge, which may be likely. Here. The town a manual recount. You will come after Thursday's the headline for this recount the results of that. Should it be? Candidates in this case, Nelson, Scott, but really all allies, Iran. It'll be. You cannot win. You will have the scores doesn't dozens of volunteers lawyers. Otherwise, looking at these ballots trying to voter just for those who don't know and beans. Mark candidate. There's no marking over vote. The market away the second voted for wine. And of course, that's going to be sorted out. They say that number of a number of ballots could be looking at or after day is anywhere at a thirty thousand plus raves. When I talked to lawyers here. Okay. Through republicans. Sunday is the deadline. Finish a manual recount. We get there. Monday the twentieth. If they're lying pretty official come out. It's worth pointing out that a lot of folks oppressed include the Miami Herald down here, you the piece saying that really at all. Recounts that we've had over the last decade very rarely does the March of air exceed a couple of hundred. It's changed the recount outcome. In this case, we're talking what looks like thousands hundreds Johnny talking to Griff Jenkins of Fox News. So right now, the recounts is machine recounts from there. We might have to move into a hand recount the way you described it. We're totally moving into the hand recount just don't worry about the Thursday deadline. Grab some popcorn a bottle of starch. And wait. Certainly feels comfortable in saying, I think that's where we're headed based on my conversations for days been sitting round the clock with attorneys for both the Democrats and the Republicans in. That would not be a three counts. Because simple fact that law I'm very quarter percentage point the candidates separated by less than the core point on here in recount is the differential you've been so tight that sees it really being a recount without. You know being that low seperation too. I mean, it really is grab your popcorn. Get ready for the Henry county. And you know, remember that guy with the bags ain't working at the hanging. Chad Ballard, I mean, we're certainly gonna have that what's really be two years. If you thought it was hectic now can we get to the recount because you know, now, we've got machine where lawyers on either side monitoring machine. You're talking about fifty plus tables thirty thousand votes three kind of by hand it every single one is going to be under tremendous creepy is that fortunately is part of what south Florida for by the way, I should also point out. The other Palm Beach county is to get that recounts done. But regardless they are likely to whatever they get whatever about they get recounted will end up in a Henry is well, actually, sixty five four to sixty seven counties did it right here. Either halfway done better than recounts carries Broward in Palm Beach. Really traditionally keep having problems for whatever either which has led to the question of shenanigans. And before I let you go. I am not alleging fraud. I am. I am one of those people questioning you find.

"Your host Ryan Gorman. What a night this is turning out to be in the state of Florida. We are centerstage nationally once again with some very very close state races before we dive into all the latest numbers. I want to go to the hotline right now in joining us is news channel eight's Paul in from the Ashley moody campaign. Ashley moody is the next attorney general the state of Florida defeating democrat, Sean, Sean tonight's Paul. How are you? I'm good. How are you? Good. So this was a race that we talked about earlier in the show pretty much. Everybody felt that Ashley moody had a good chance to win this race. She did. So what was the mood like throughout the night there at the campaign the campaign that Moody's campaign? It was confident everybody that I talked to had a really good feeling earlier in the evening. I was with Sean Shaw, and he actually came out and said, look, I'm positively optimistic. I think I have a chance this is a pivotal election. And he was cordial. He talked to the media he came out shook hands over at the Ashley moody campaign, she came out and did her thing on the podium where she did. Her acceptance speech. She would not however talk to the media, I even asked her press person, I said after would she talk, and they said, no. And I said why not she said, well, that's all she did it for the primary. She's not going to do it. And I said I would really like to talk. I think everybody wants to hear what she says. And she said, no, we will have a media veil later on in the week possibly Thursday possibly Friday. So she's just going to talk to the people at the event give give a speech, and that'll be it. There won't be any kind of questions back and forth. That's it. No questions. We were allowed to go down under the floor to get video of her talking with people mingling with people taking pictures, but that was it then they actually moved her out into the back again. And then they brought her out a little bit later. But by that point most of the media was back doing their live shots. And so we won't hear from her which is disappointing because it's always good to hear from someone who's newly elected about what they plan to do in their upcoming term. What was the mood like among the crowd there as the results have come in for the other big races including the race for governor? Where it looks like the Santa's is going to win. And the Senate race were Scott holds a little over a half percent lead over incumbent Senator Bill Nelson. It was pretty tense, and they were watching TV and getting different results. And and at first when it looked like that to Santa's with down a little bit to kill them. It was pretty tense, and they were up against the TV's everybody watching it. But as the lead started shrinking and switching and it looked more like the Santa's would come out every little bit. There were cheers within the crowd because that was a mainly Republican crowd. Not all Republicans, but mainly Republicans. And so there was a good mood. They're also Chad chronic stir the new sheriff he was there as well speaking, and he got thunderous applause when he was up on the podium, so everybody there was in a pretty good mood throughout the night. News. Channel eight reporter Paul Lampson live from the Ashley moody campaign, Paul. We really appreciate the time. Thanks so much for checking in with us. Oh, no problem have a good rest of the night. And hope it doesn't go too late. We appreciate that. We're keeping a close eye on some of these races. Because they're so close that there's there's that potential for it to continue late into the night, especially the US Senate race. We do have some breaking news democrat tippy Powell has unseated incumbent Republican congressman Carlos Curbello in the twenty sixth congressional district here in Florida. So Democrats picking up a nother house seat that was one that they felt they had a really good chance to win. And they have pulled it out it like I said all night. It is a it's it's a it's a damn shame that Carlos Cabello, a moderate is gone at this point. We are going to have a very partisan delegation. We're going to have Rick Scott. Likely and Marco Rubio, and we are going to have people like Ross Begnaud and Ted Yoho and Matt gaetz coming from north Florida. And then we are going to have folks like Ted joy lowest Frankel, Debbie Wasserman Schultz from south Florida. And so this is this is not going to be a delegation that has a great time at the delegation softball game. Each time these are these are all partisan warriors being elected to today the two closest statewide races right now the US Senate race where Rick Scott holds a point six percentage point lead over Bill, Nelson, very very close there. And then also for Commissioner of agriculture. You have Republican Matt Colwell at fifty point two eight percent, and Nikki free the democrat at forty nine point seven two percent. So those are the two closest races by far again when it comes to the gubernatorial race between Andrew gillum and Rhonda. Fantas to Santa's holding a one percentage point lead with ninety nine percent of the votes in. We we had Peter call it for Florida politics dot com a little while ago. I said it as well this one looks like it's going to dissent. I just don't see where where Gillam would be able to make the votes and that is a huge huge win for the president. The president not only made Disentis the candidate. That would win the primary by giving him his endorsement and campaigning for him. But he has come to Florida for Myers Pensacola in the last few days leading up to today campaigning for both Scott and for Disentis so for Santa's to win as Trump's guy. One of probably out of all the candidates out there running for governor to Santa's has been the most closely aligned with the president. It's a big night for President Trump here in the state of Florida again, if you think about. You think about the candidates that Trump gets behind your endorses? Most of those people are established figures already not that Santa's wasn't as a as a three term Representative. But this is not him going in and giving his imprimatur to an existing race. This is him. Basically, remember Rhonda Santa's was in. I think third place in the two thousand sixteen GOP primary when there was no Donald Trump factor at this point. And now he's gone from that to governor elect. Whatever qualifier you wanna say. But in the course of only since what does that July of two thousand sixteen he was run out of the race. Basically by Marco Rubio re entering the race. Then and is now governor elect the sky's the limit for Santa's. I mean, this isn't a guy. Let's put it this way. He does have the war record. He does has the does have the education. He does have the family. You know, gosh. I mean, I I can't believe it five hours ago. I was saying the Andrew gillum was going to be vice presidential nominee. But now you're looking at somebody for the future. It's going to be Rhonda Santa's twenty twenty four twenty twenty eight. I mean, he's I mean, he's set up in a good position. Now, he is going to become a national star. NBC news is reporting that Republicans will retain Senate control. We've also had a couple of networks. Call the house for the Democrats. So that was really the conventional wisdom going into tonight. And it looks like that's how things are going to play out. NBC news also reporting the Ted Cruz is gonna win that Texas Senate seat overbid O'Rourke he's leading fifty one percent to forty eight percent. So a close race. But that was one where you know. I if Democrats had pulled that one off it would have been indicative of a much larger Blue Wave that we're not seeing tonight throughout the country coming up in a moment. We'll take a look at the national landscape with ABC news political analyst, Kristen Soltys Anderson were also, of course, monitoring are races here, including the US Senate race that is too close to call at the moment. So lots still to get to you. Here on Florida decides election.
