New antitrust legislation would check the power of tech giants

"Arguably the biggest problem with big tech. Is you know the bigness. A few giant companies gobble up their competition owned the digital advertising and web hosting markets control the information ecosystem and sometimes control the distribution of their own competition so far though these worries haven't led to regulation now democratic senator amy klobuchar who leads the senate subcommittee on antitrust introduced a bill intended to check the power of tech. Giant's it focuses mostly on acquisitions to prevent huge companies from buying potential competitors and it would force companies that control more fifty percent of a single market to prove that an acquisition would not reduce competition. Here's senator club shar. We all know that misinformation has been rampant on social media and it is greatly. Set us back. But there's another much more insidious problem and that is that any company that was starting to come and do cool things got bought and i think maybe you could look at this legislation as basically a reply to mark zuckerberg's email when he said about they're looking at what's happened instagram. These businesses are nascent but the networks established. The brands are already meaningful. And get this. And if they grow to a large scale they could be very disruptive to us. Google has ninety percent market share. Right now they are literally taking on a government of a major country in australia when the prime minister says hey we're gonna start making you guys pay for content and they say back. No you're not we're going to withdraw from your market and you'll have no search engine and a big part of this. It sounds like is funding these agencies right making sure that the ftc which is charged with a lot of this actually has some teeth exactly and of a numbers can't lie the ftc in nineteen eighty at one thousand seven hundred nineteen employees by twenty eighteen down to one thousand one hundred two. You cannot take on the biggest companies. The world has ever known trillion dollar companies with bandaids and duct tape. And that's why senator grassley has join me on a portion of this bill to up the fees on megamerger so we can put in over one hundred million dollars to each agency so they can actually do their job and this isn't just about tech. There's only to cat food. Companies that control most of the market. There's only two online travel agencies. You think you're getting all their choices. Go look at. Who owns them. And as john oliver closed in a segment on his. And if this all makes you wanna die good luck. Because the casket market is controlled by three companies which actually sadly no one purchase the other. It's down to

Democrats unveil antitrust bill that could upend the tech sector

"And finally today keeping the promise to keep our eyes on how the whole winds of antitrust might bear out under a democratic regime in washington. One thing i think we can assume any remedies like breaking up. Big tech are probably all things being equal unlikely to happen in the end and even if they did they wouldn't happen for years however this sort of thing is this sort of thing that could meaningfully shape the tech landscape right now. The incoming head of the senate antitrust subcommittee senator amy klobuchar plants introduce an antitrust bill. That would significantly raise the bar for tech. Acquisitions quoting the wall street journal. The senator plans to introduce legislation that would bar companies that dominate their sectors for making acquisitions unless they can prove their deals. Don't quote create an appreciable risk of materially lessening competition and quote according to a draft from ms club. Hr's office now. The burden is on the government to prove a merger substantially lessons competition ms club. Hr is hoping that democrats control of the senate will improve odds of passage and she will seek to build momentum through a series of legislative hearings focused on monopoly power quote. We have increasing monopoly. Problem really headlined by what is happening with tech but also extending across the economy miss global char said our laws have to be as sophisticated as those that are messing around with competition she said and and in an interview with the washington post club char said this quote. It's not just sitting there and pulling constant hearings where we're yelling at executives and throwing popcorn at them though. I'm sure some of that will go on. We have to pass something. And i really wanna see something. Get done and quote

How the attack on Washington, DC's U.S. Capitol unfolded: A reporter's perspective

"Insurrection at the. Us capitol building on wednesday has taking stock of democracy in america. This hour we start with gray segers licko reporter for cbs news. I was in the capital on wednesday reporting mainly from the senate chamber what started as a historic day in the capital. Where for only the third time. In history congress was debating whether to overturn the votes of thousands of americans ended with violence and tragedy full. You know it's funny. I did expected to be a bit of a weird day because of the inherently unusual thing of having dozens of republicans challenge the election results in several states which is pretty much unprecedented. Mr vice president. I paul gosar from areas does the gentleman from arizona. I rise up for myself and sixty my colleagues to object to the difficult day day which would require a lot of concentration and very exactness in my report and then everything was just flipped upside down so suddenly. You can't have electron ix in the senate chamber. Would i usually do is. I'm in there for about thirty minutes or so. And then i'll come out for five minutes to write an email to my editors. Let everyone in the bureau. What's going on. So i had actually come out of the chamber and was in the press gallery writing an email and then all of a sudden i heard a senate gallery. Staffer shout pence has left. He had just been taken out of the room. And i assume that it was for security purposes and that My first thought was a. Wow i guess those protesters outside have gotten a bit more rowdy and then the next thing i knew there was a capital police officer at the door of the senate press gallery saying lock that gohmert now just shouting it through the room and i realized oh my god this is this is serious and then the officer was telling all of us who were in the press gallery outside of the chambered me to grab your stuff and you need to get inside the chamber and we are going to lock you inside. The chamber definitely kind of illegally took my took my phone and laptop into the chamber 'cause i i needed to tell my editors that i was alive and also telling my loved ones that i was okay and next thing i knew the the doors were being locked behind us. The press. gallery sort of overlooks the senate chamber floor. So it's kind of like the lip of fish bowl and the reporters are looking over this list into the fishbowl. Where all the senators are on the floor. It was very clear that something was wrong. All senators pretty much. Where on their phones standing looking extremely stressed and there were police officers. All around the doors. Senator amy klobuchar could on kind of her best mom voice and shouted a shots have been fired getaway from the doors. This is serious. There came a point where all of a sudden senators were being evacuated and it seemed for a moment that they were going to leave the reporters in the senate chamber which would have been very unfortunate as riders broke into the chamber just moments after senators had left but fortunately a senate gallery staff shouted down. You know hey what about us. Police officers just told us okay. Follow the senators. They were literally steps away

Political battle ensues over RBG replacement

"As the country continues to mourn Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. There's a political battle brewing over when and how her replacement should be chosen. Minnesota Senator Amy Klobuchar was asked on CNN's state of the union if Democrats have the ability to block a vote to fill her seat. Whatever Mitch McConnell does right now, my Republican colleagues Understand that the voters are voting, and a number of them have already said that the next president, whoever wins should be able to pick the justice Texas Republican Senator Ted Cruz explains to ABC is this week why it's important to hold hearings before the election. Unequally divided Court for four can't decide anything that could make this presidential election drag on weeks and months and well into next year. That is an intolerable situation for the country. We need a full court. On Election Day. A second Republican Senator Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, has joined Senator Susan Collins of Maine in opposing efforts to fill Ginsberg seat before the next president is elected President. Trump says he intends to nominate a woman to re plate Ginsberg, possibly this week. Former vice president Joe Biden spoke about the Supreme Court vacancy. During the speech in Philadelphia. Today, he blasted President Trump and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell for moving within an hour of Justice Ginsburg Ginsberg's death To announce it would nominate and vote on a replacement against her dying wish is this appointment isn't about the past. It's about the future and the people of this nation. The people of this nation are choosing their future right now is they vote? Jam this nomination through the Senate. Just exercise in raw political power. I don't believe the people of this nation will stand for.

"Night is it. You're out of here and She got a little better took a while for her to recover. Which is another story now. She's happy in our house berry. Happy Debate having dinner with me every night anywhere whole nother story so she gets out and That is when I had some time to start working on this and I found out other women across a my stayed in. Actually the country were having the same experience and so I went to the legislature wasn't in elected office and I started to testify until my story and at the time it was almost all men in the legislature and I realized if he thinks is that one is that if you talk about relief embarrassing things that men don't WanNa talk about giving birth in as they go. Hey No problem. And then the the second was he just have to be perseverance and find other people that had the same problem and then as you know later. President Clinton ended up taking this on as a national 'cause job running the first state to pass it. I mean that's her story. You do realize that something you take this something. Oftentimes bad is happening around you and you just instead of just complaining about it. You actually get involved. Which is what's happening. I hope right now in our election coming up we certainly saw due to. I think I think they are. And now it's time for questions for listeners. And the first question is from Soviet Los Angeles Senator Klobuchar. What was the hardest thing for you to manage on a personal level when he got to the Senate well? I mean there was balancing of your family. That was a harder thing for me actually My family came out there with me because I wanted to be part of my daughter's school and know her classmates but I think the hardest thing for me personally was that I had gone from a job or managed a bunch of people and I could get things done right away and then suddenly I was working with a lot of other people and I was not used to actually allow partisanship so when I got to the Senate. I was in shock because Republicans sat on one side. Democrats out on the other side and to me is just seemed so strange because I was just used to working with people as people and so one of the things that I started to do was just develop friendships with people across the aisle and Right now that's become harder and harder to do in the era of Donald Trump where he likes to pit people against each other but I still forged head back then and I think it made me a better senator because I actually got to be friends of people and I was able to pass bills. I remember one drug shortages that I did on agriculture. And things like that but and I know the vice president can speak to this much more personally than I can but one of those friendships that I forged was with John McCain Because he invited me to go on a trip with him right after he lost the presidency and I got to see personally someone who had been through something like that and I saw his incredible resilience and we would be in these meetings with all these leaders from other countries and they would always look at him and he would speak and then they would look at the other Republican senator there Senator Graham and then he would always say no. No no now. Senator Klobuchar is the lead Democrat on this trip and she will go next personal moment where he basically gave me that. Gravitas to say you know what cheerleader too. She may be a woman and everyone else in. This room is a man but she is the leader on this trip from her political party. And for me it's professional but it was also personnel to be able to see that and to be able to have that role model and south for me friendships like that. A help me get through. What for me. Being from Minnesota not having been in the congress before was kind of jolting experienced to get out. There are where people were playing politics with a lot of things and it really helped me to be a better senator. John I knew John will and as you know. And he had great respect for. Ya and he really did and but that's also John had a value set. That was like yours hit a value. Set Him he was decent an honorable. We'd argue like hell. He and I hollered each other. We traveled all over the world together but you know But at the end of the day it was We were we were friends. He's to say you've never seen a problem. You don't think you can solve and I'd say you never saw worried WANNA fight and we'd go through all.

"Senator Amy Cobra Jars a great friend. Amy is a Senator Bennett Towel to leader for the moment she got to the Senate. She served the state of Minnesota for a long time. She's a former colleague of mine in the Senate and she's a friend and I'd like to welcome a- Senator Coburn Dr to the show good to say. Y- does does everything we'd be doing this. We got television studios in our libraries and basements here. So look we are all of us have had a friend or roller effective by Cova nineteen. But it's very personal for you. Can you tell us about how it's affected your family? Yeah you know I think Nolan everything's it's going to happen to you until it happens and in our case My husband we have no idea how he got. It got very very sick and he ended up with the temperature of over one hundred for ten days. Ocoee knew when he started to get sick something was wrong and so thankfully he filed the rules. He didn't go to his faculty meeting. Like Joe is a teacher and he can go that day. He didn't go to thing. I had at work and resolve that a lot of people didn't get sick and he stayed in the apartment. I kept calling him everyday from Minnesota in he was in Washington saying. Hey what's going on? And he kept saying well. I think still sick and it was sort of a guy thing you would do anything about it. Finally after about eight days I made him go to the emergency room. And that's when they found out that he had severe pneumonia bad he. His oxygen level was down to seventy which is really dangerous. Eckermann the hospital. It took six days to get the test back by cabins so many people in our country and I had the experience that I never thought would happen to our family. He's only fifty two. He's really healthy. You know that and I finally he just turned it around on the last day in what I learned from that is. You can't be there you know. I couldn't be there to hold his hand on really bad. The nurse has to hold up the phone to his ear. I can't hug those healthcare workers and took care of them. I haven't even been able to meet them except a tarp over the phone and so many people have it so much worse now. Joe Because I know you've talked to those healthcare workers there they are. You know you're not on someone's dying in there. The last wants to talk to them and it's the most lonely horrific disease and that's why I'm so devoted to your plans to give us out of this. We should have had more testing. We know this got screwed up by the administration are we should have been much more smart right away. He should've been with how he handled this. But now we can't lose any more time and we gotta lead and push for the testing in the back scene and to get America working again. I really think you're right. Look and Jill. Censor her love. You know how much she thinks your husband. I mean they at all what the base they'd hang together sit together and and but it scared to live in. Hell Outta her and US too but you know I can't imagine what it's like. I've been through some tough times. But at least with notable exceptions have been a situation where I've been able to be there and hold the hand and hold the hand but when you're at a distance and you can't. We're hearing so many stories when we're doing these these roundtables these town halls about people talking about how they you know the doctors the nurses holding the phone up to their. You know their husband or way for their mother. The father who is an extremist. And just saying goodbye. We've been sort of absent in terms of the testing. The I mean the idea that all the things the president said about it is not necessarily just as I was walking down and do this. Television was on and there was a quote from trump saying. Well the governor's got to do the testing governors have to do the testing. I mean my Lord. I don't know what he needs. I mean the idea that we haven't made the kind of effort that we can make en- should be making you know he has the ability as you know under the under the wartime legislation quote unquote. I mean I was there when we were in this last downturn economic downturn which is nothing like this but it was bad in. I saw lead those efforts to not just make sure the money got out there but to make sure it was spent right and that's one of the that are really really bothers me right now. Is You have small businesses. That aren't getting the funding. They need and screw upset. Are Going on. And that's why I think you've got the immediate getting the protective equipment in the testing. That then you've got the long term. Which is we need a leader to lead us out of the economic problems long after we get the testing when when you have no respect for government to begin with it's awful hard to make government work with the grace of God goodwill neighbors. We're going to get something done here. But I mean my heart goes out to all those folks who are so many people suffered. But but we're going to give us that sense that you have Which is marked your whole life from your own losses of empathy is something that we are missing right now in the White House and I was thinking of this as I was. I got up. This morning was looking forward to talking with you. what you did once to someone. You never even knew one of my friends who had been out in Minnesota and to her husband had hoped with an event that you and I did together and then her husband got suddenly very sick and you didn't even never meet him and he had three girls and he died and when I called you to thank you for coming to Minnesota I told you the story and I said maybe WANNA write a note to his without. She's a very good friend and he said No. I'll call her collar and I just think about this with all the people that we're losing right. Now what did you do? Joe Biden you call. There happened to the first day. When she was coming back from her job she had gone back to work and she answered her. Cell Phone. You said it was you and she started to cry. And you said pullover pullover and then you gave her your personnel number because you said you knew it was like to lose a spouse on and I think that story to me is all about you but also about what we need in this country right now. We need confidence to run this in a big way. Get that money out but we also need a president that's able to lead and to even if it's virtually hold people's hands and our not seeing that right now in the White House. Will you know what you and I've talked a lot about? You know the showed restoring the soul of America where we're getting to see soul. Amac look at all the heroes out there. Look at all the ordinary people doing extraordinary extraordinary things extraordinary things. The people who in fact You know just stock the grocery self of the People. Who are you know? They're they're making virtually no money. They're making minimum wage. They're out there. The first responders the people are showing up. They're not I mean it just makes you so damn proud to be an American America showing his soul now and And I hope and God's name we remember this when when we beat this thing and we're putting the country back together. Look moving away from Corona virus. I WanNa ask you something. That many people might not know about you. Before you were a senator You had even ventured into politics. You had a particularly challenging experience given birth to your daughter and you took that experience straight to the Minnesota state legislature and helped pass a new law. Yeah I think so. Many people something happens to them and it just they realize I can make a change that could make the world better and what happened was unexpected normal pregnancy. And then when she was born as she couldn't swallow and the nurses come running in. They say she can't swallow something's wrong. They thought she had tumor. They didn't know what was wrong and She ended up being in intensive care for a week and back then they had a rule in place of the companies did Kicked out in twenty four hours even though she was in intensive care. "The woods. Well he gave up. Ardian moved here. We got him. Lucky us well. You just bought a house for one hundred sixty five million dollars but granite countertops is that above ground pool. Which is all right. Does that happen under Bernie Sanders? Is that legal? Look how socialist are we getting? I just want to know not that. I got that kind of money. Here's the thing. There are a lot of people who have been called socialist over the course of our history. FDR was called so Carl Drew Socialists. Every he calls himself associates. Well you know he. He does sometimes. He calls himself the Social Democrats sometimes. He calls himself a democratic socialist but the label is not what's important. I think what is important is what is he fighting for. These ideas like Medicare for all like college for All. These are not radical ideas. They're actually the same ideas that a lot of other countries in the world that are pure countries have implemented so the idea of government coming in as the great equalizer of opportunity is actually something that Republicans have decided. They're going to call. Socialist throughout the history of our time. Medicare called it social social security social. It's it's a form of equalizing -tunities there's nothing wrong with it to my view a certain amount of socialism. You need a next economy. What people worry about is he's going to take it to a different place and also let me ask about one. Less thing for all he was for Medicare for all Pete has medicare for all who want it. That sounds more reasonable. Tell me why that's not. Tell me why the Democrats best issue is healthcare. Seems like we're playing with fire giving trump a talking point. If you're going to outlaw employer-based Medicare which more than half the people have. Why are you giving the talking point? Democrats are going to take away your medic. Your House sponsor for all bill and I believe a lot of convincing to do people. Well actually no. We have a lot of convincing pundits to do but the American people believe in Medicare for all seven and ten. Not when you tell them you take. The employer base is going to be outlawed. No actually that's not true. Well it is true that it goes down only until you ask the next question and say. Do you like your insurance company or do you like your doctor. If you knew that you had your doctor would you still want private insurance? Everyone says knows your doctor was. You wouldn't like him and that's just an all right. Let me ask everybody about this race and Michael Bloomberg first of all he was insulting trump the other day God it so amazing.

"You must be feeling very good this week in great. You're having a good week. Tell me about something that I've been reading about lately that there is a myth of the Bernie Bros. I we had this image. I must admit I did too. Doesn't look like me. No but you know that it was mostly these younger white men and I. I read the statistics. And no in fact Bernie does worse with white men than anybody. And it's more women who are form more Latinos. How did we get it wrong? Twitter twitter. I mean I do think. Twitter is a big part of it. People look at that and think it means everything right but Bernie. Sanders has assembled the most diverse coalition there is. He is energizing young people. He's got tons of women of color. Got Tons of people of color more broadly but he is also playing to a forgotton group of blue collar workers who really believe he's GonNa fight for them and that combination of this very diverse coalition of voters have not turned up before that frankly any other candidate would be thrilled to have this kind of coalition. He's got them but he is also speaking to a lot of people that really feel like he will fight for them. I mean just in two thousand sixteen. We Lost Michigan for the first time in twenty eight years. Democrats Lost Michigan. We lost Wisconsin for the first time in thirty two years. Guess who wants seventy one of seventy two counties in Wisconsin. It was Bernie Sanders. So when you look at the appeal of Bernie Sanders. I think it is really unusual to have somebody who can do both things really build that broader base but also played to these trump some of them trump vote. Yes there is a trump Bernie crossover. There always has been. But here's what troubles me about. This three quarters of the country say they think their life is going to be better in a year and the economy's going to be better. Clinton used to always say elections are about the future of his theme song. Don't stop thinking about tomorrow okay. So if people think the world is going to get better. Is that a good time for? Is that good? Fertile ground for a revolution is that the time doesn't sound like people want a revolution under that condition. Well people want their lives to be better in a year and I don't think many people want to spend their their time thinking that life is not going to get better at. That's a you don't always hear that stat under president but listen to also the other stat. Which is we have the worst inequality since the nineteen twenties. We've got three people. Two of whom live in my state of Washington who have the same amount of wealth as the bottom fifty percent of Americans. That's one hundred and sixty million Americans. People are struggling five hundred thousand Americans. Every year file for bankruptcy because of medically related causes. We have half a million people who are without housing tonight. Jeff bezos. And that he also has kids that have worked in the Justice system and seems devoted to the integrity of the Justice system. Senator Amy klobuchar. Thank you. Thank you, Judy. And now for a perspective from a former Justice department official used to work closely with the nominee, George Willert served as William bars deputy attorney general, and he was in the hearing room today, four bars testimony, George to wills are. Welcome back. Thank you to be with you. You heard some of Senator Clova showers concerns there at the end immigration, but initially her concerns about whether Bill bar could be an independent overseer of the Muller investigation. How did you take away? What he had to say. Well, I heard the same things that Senator klobuchar and the other senators heard today in the hearing room Judy, and I think they should be very much reassured about his independence. He made it very clear that he would follow the law based on the facts of whatever the situation was in front of him on this issue of of recusals. I think it's a red herring because nobody's pointed out any real basis upon which Bill should. Recuse himself and all he said about that was look at the end of the day. I first of all let me say, I think the hearing today was refreshingly civil there were tough questions asked there were probing questions asked. But the. Tire atmosphere was was civil in the way in my view. Those hearings should be on that particular issue. Judy. I think that it's very clear that we maybe we separate that into into two parts. First lots of lawyers have thoughts about the Mueller investigation and aspects of the Mueller investigation, lots of lawyers discuss those things among themselves. I'm one of the people named in bills letter with whom he discussed these these matters, not the memo per se, but the subject matter the fact that Bill took his thoughts and put them into a memo, and then sent them to the people who he thought might be interested to hear them to whom they might be be relevant. I don't think that there's anything really unusual about that or disqualifying. It wasn't a job signal that he was interested in the job. I can tell you that is definitely not the furthest thing from his mind was the idea that he might take any. Job in government. Again, let alone be attorney general I had nothing to do with the big question. So many people have of course, for any attorney general is how independent from the White House from the president. Can that person? Be what gives you confidence that Bill bar would not be very subject to influence from the White House. They're very simple Bill bars. Integrity is professional integrity, his personal integrity. And and he said it today he said, I'm not going to be bullied by anyone. I've worked very closely with Bill in very difficult circumstances, he will not be bullied by everyone. The thing that I thought came through today in the hearing and the and the Bill that I know is his commitment to the rule of law and to the importance of the American people of the integrity of the Justice department is paramount to him one of the thing. I want to ask you about his immigration. I mean, he said in a series of question and answer exchanges that he. Essentially supports the president's position that more needs to be done to shore up the southern border of the United States. Do you know the, you know him? Well, how far do you think he's prepared to go on that? Do you think he agrees with the government shutdown to the government should should stay shut down until there's more money for a border wall? Well, he expressed today a great deal of consternation with the shutdown the effect that it has on the men and women in the Justice department and elsewhere in government, I don't know what his view is on how far it should go in terms of length and so forth on the question of immigration, generally. I know exactly what he thinks. We both went to the border when he was the attorney general, and I was the deputy attorney general I was an important part of putting together an immigration initiative during his tenure as attorney general. There is no doubt. And it's just common sense that barriers of various types. And I think this is exactly what Bill said today technological barriers physical barriers human barriers are important to securing the border. The fact that the rhetoric has devolved to the wall, and I'm not sure how much Bill sort of buys into that. And and how unfortunate it is that it's that it's come to that. But the most important point he made today was he believes in the importance of immigration, and legal immigration, and separating that from you can knock out of the chaos of people leading them in leading themselves in as he put it through the back door while people wait in line to come in through the front door one more in a series of truly important issues that came up today, George George her Wilbur, thank you very much Judy. As we reported earlier, British Prime Minister Theresa.

"Livermore, and Morgan hill will get up to fifty six degrees. Redwood City and Fremont this afternoon. We'll both have a high of fifty seven Oakland Mountain View and San Jose all expecting a high of fifty eight degrees. This approaching storm system is going to push inland. This afternoon. That's going to result in a strong. Gusty winds, widespread rain showers, and possibly an isolated thunderstorm or two so. Make sure you drive carefully. If at all possible. Seven minutes now past the hour of six this is morning edition from NPR news. I'm David green. And I'm Steve Inskeep. One of the senators who today questions President Trump's nominee for attorney general is in our studios democratic Senator Amy klobuchar on the judiciary committee where William bar will open his testimony today, the senators who will hear him are senators who had the attention of the nation during last year supreme court hearing. And now the question the nominee for attorney general Senator club are welcome back the studios while thanks good morning is William bar qualified what he clearly has experience from his many years in legal practice as well as as a former attorney general, but qualified also means that someone should be able to be fair and administered Justice. And so my concern going into the hearing in some of the things I'm going to focus on when he is under oath is the fact that literally just last June. He sent a memo. In which he questioned the investigation and that the Muller investigation that so important to getting to the truth of what happened with Russia's influence in our last election. This was a memo that was sent to effectively supporters of the president lawyers for the president lawmakers other people is that correct? Exactly. Well, he said in the memo that the investigation was fatally misconceive those were his words, and now he would be in the highest Justice office that would oversee it and the people he sent it to. And this is what's really concerning. We just found this out last night when he the administration sent a letter back to Indy Graham explaining who had gotten this memo, so as a private citizen, Mr. bar sent this memo to the president's private lawyers to in his personal capacity sent it to of course, the White House counsel sent it to looks like over ten people, including prominent members of. The federalist society in the conservative legal community. So this just gets our theory that this was kind of a job application and essay you'd right if you wanna be attorney general for Donald Trump, and we will note as a matter of fact here that our correspondent Ryan Lucas has been reporting on this. And you are correct that memo was sent and that it was sent to those people according to the administration, although his Defense William bars defense is sure I weighed in with a negative opinion about the investigation of Russian influence in US politics. But I did that as a private citizen my duties as a public servant would be different. He can say that. But again, we only have the evidence before us, and that is that he sent this memo strangely. Just literally a few months before he gets nominated before Jeff Sessions get fired and then he gets nominated for this job. So we're going to be asking. When did you send it to those people? Why did you say it? And what are you going to do about the Muller investigation? A one bit of good news in my meeting with him as well. As in the opening statement, he did say that he would allow the Muller investigation to be completed. And so we'll be asking questions I will about how about the scope of the investigation. The Justice department can limit that how about the budget, and we're really trying to get at one is gonna. Wow, this investigation to be completed given that the president attacks it nearly on a daily basis, and then number two are we going to be able to see a public report? And that part is interesting because he has said both to me and in his opening statement that he wants to have this information public. But yet he sort of couches it in. Terms of as the law will allow well, he can interpret the law many ways. So we're concerned about that the whole report get out there. Although isn't that fair of him to say, I'm going to be as transparent as the law will allow because I certainly can't promise to do something illegal for you. It is better than if he said he wasn't going to release the report at all the issue is that he says, well, I gotta look at the regulations. And you've got the fact that in this memo, he said made many comments which would imply that he thinks the president has a broad executive power just like Justice cabin his hearings dead, and that the president shouldn't basically be brought up on obstruction of Justice charges. I if it's in his official capacity yet he made some exceptions for if he asked to witness to commit perjury, or if he asked so much change their testimony. So those are the things we're going to explore this is so important right now when we're at the cusp of getting the findings from this investigation when thirty seven people have been indicted that we have. Allow Justice to do. Its course this is about a foreign government trying to influence our Electra member that the previous attorney general Jeff Sessions with someone who is strongly supportive of President Trump had a lot of positions that I'm sure maybe nearly all positions that I'm sure that you would disagree with Senator yet he revealed himself to have when it came to the Mueller investigation a certain amount of integrity. Iraq used to be interfered with Rick recused himself from that investigation. When he felt it was appropriate. Do you see any sign that William bar, even if you're disagree with him about many things has that same Intech? I have a feeling if you're asking questions, Steve you had asked that question will he recused himself, and we will to but here's the point. He commended Jeff Sessions for recusing himself and following the rules of the ethics lawyers occur ethics layers. So I'm going to ask him. What do you think? Whitaker did the right thing and not recusing himself. Matthew whitaker. The acting attorney Jack is he went against the ethics, and then I'm going to ask as well. Mr. bar, he should recuse himself because of this memo and other things he said. So you can't go commend sessions. And then not follow the rules of the ethics career advice. Yourself Senator club. Are you planning any more trips too soon? Stay tuned. South for the winter. You are really going south for the winter. I wa is right. South of Minnesota. We share a lovely border, and it's south for the winter. Okay. And I'll just note that people are following your travel schedule because you have said on this program and elsewhere. You're one of many Democrats thinking. Senator thanks so much. Really? Appreciate it. Thank you. Amy klobuchar of Minnesota NPR's Ryan Lucas who's been covering. This story has been listening in from another studio, and he joins us once again, Ryan what you hear there. Well, there were a couple of things, but first and foremost if people were keeping tabs on William bars confirmation hearing wondering what it would be about. I think that Senator klobuchar made clear that this is going to focus to an exceeding amount on special counsel, Robert Muller's investigation and concerns that the Democrats have about bar, and whether he will interfere in the investigation whether he will release any sort of final report there's one important clarification that I need to make a on. What Senator klobuchar said about the memo that bar wrote about the Mueller investigation? He did not say that the investigation itself was fatally misconceived that memo was about one aspect of the investigation potential, obstruction of Justice. By the president a related to the firing of James Comey. That is in particular what Bill bar said, maybe fairly misconceived detail of the investigation. So to speak, homey, was Comey's firing was obstruction of the entire Russian investigation into possible coordination between the Trump campaign and Russia. So there is an important difference there. Okay. Thanks for clarifying. That Ryan really appreciate it. My pleasure. That's NPR's. Ryan Lucas before last November the small city of Chico. California had already been grappling with challenges that are so common in mostly.
